GOMES: Herbert Edgar

, 83, "Real Vermonter," and much beloved friend and family member, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, after a long and well-fought battle with colon cancer. He left this world just as he arrived - in a Greensboro farmhouse surrounded by loved ones. Superb hunter and marksman, consummate butcher and unstoppable woodsman, Herbert connected with people as he shared his skills and knowledge in fields and woods and barnyards while hunting, home butchering and logging. People watched in awe as he safely dropped an enormous and/or twisted tree with only inches to spare on either side, or deftly sliced and knuckled the hide from a downed deer or family beef. Although his abilities in these directions were well-known, it was the twinkle in his blue eyes, the gentle smile, the lovingly merciless teasing, and his delightful stories for which he was best-known as he made his way around the lake year after year caring for people and their homes in the Caspian Lake area. He found a place in the hearts of countless people and will be sorely missed by friends and family alike. Herbert lived in the Greensboro and Stannard area for most of his life with a few forays to logging camps in Maine and Canada early on. In 1945 he married his first wife, Lorraine Lanphear, and in 1975 he married Narcissa Boyd Gorlewski. He leaves behind Lorraine and their six children, Bradley of Craftsbury, Linda Mae Clow of Hardwick, David of Hardwick, Millie O'Neil of Glover, Bonnie Rossi of East Orange, and Sharon of Titusville, Fla. He also leaves his wife Narcissa, aka Nancy, of Greensboro; and their son Jack of Alexandria, Va.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Herbert was very recently predeceased by his sister, Ola Zampieri of North Montpelier. Brother Delbert Gomes of East Craftsbury, and sisters Ona Lanphear of Greensboro Bend, and Olga Bolduc of Littleton, N.H., are still living. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Herbert's memory to Hospice of Caledonia Home Health Care whose unending support, caring, and skills made Herbert's wish to die at home an incredible reality. The address is 161 Sherman Drive, P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. A celebration of Herbert's life will take place Dec. 4, at 2 p.m., in the United Church of Christ in Greensboro.
