They both were members of Westmore Community Church. Services were held at Wellshire Presbyterian Church in Denver on January 12. A memorial service will be held at Willoughby Lake in the summer at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Fleury was born the youngest of 17 brothers and sisters on May 29, 1925, in Quebec, Canada, a son of Luciens and Rose (Chandler) Fleury. On July 16, 1945, he married Barbara Vautier, who predeceased him on November 4, 2001. He was a section man for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for 33 years. He was a member of the Sutton Grange. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, ice fishing, and golfing. He is survived by his children Bob Fleury and wife, Mary, of Schenectady, New York, and Nancy Valley and her husband, Francis, of Barton; by his grandchildren: Joey Valley Sr. and his wife, Katrina, of Barton, Barbara Young and her husband, Milo, of Albany, and Tom Valley of Barton; by his great-grandchildren: Jasmine and Joey Valley Jr. of Barton and Maria, Ashley, and Naomi Young of Albany; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held January 9 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton with the Reverend Daniel Rupp officiating. , 67, of East Granville died Sunday morning, January 11, 2004, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. Mrs. Currier was born June 17, 1936, in Charleston, the daughter of Warren C. and Flora M. (Durgin) Smith. She was educated at Charleston Elementary School and graduated from Derby Academy in 1954. She married Winfield Currier on June 15, 1957, in Sharon. He died in 1993. They had lived in East Braintree and moved to East Granville in 1961. She worked at the former Van Raalte, Tranquility Nursing Home, and for 37 years at First National Stores. She belonged to Roxbury Union Congregational Church, where she held the offices of clerk, deacon, trustee, and member of the mission and nominating committees, and she was delegate to the UCC annual conference. She also served on the UCC conference mission committee, was second constable for the town of Granville, and was a board member for the White River Valley Ambulance. She enjoyed reading the Bible, sunrises, birds, making quilts and dolls, and collecting salt and pepper shakers, cookbooks, thimbles, and crosses. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Habel of Northfield Falls; by sons Keith and Gerald Currier of East Granville; by sister Beverly Vesper of Royalton; by brothers Clyde Smith of Charleston and James Smith of Barton; by five granddaughters; by three great-grandchildren; by nieces and nephews; and by two uncles and one aunt. She was predeceased by her brothers Burton and Roy Smith; and by sisters: Barbara Glover, Ella Farrow, and Betty Keement. Funeral services were held January 14 at Day Funeral Home in Randolph with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. , 85, of Craftsbury died Monday morning, January 19, 2004, in Craftsbury Common. Mrs. Young was born in Craftsbury on April 4, 1918, the daughter of Hugh and Belle (King) Calderwood. She attended grade school in Craftsbury and graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1936. In August 1945, she married Frank Young and together they owned and operated a dairy farm in Craftsbury until his death in 1966. She continued to operate and manage the farm with her son Alan until the early 1980s. Mrs. Young, affectionately known as "Katie" to her friends and family, was a member of the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church. She was active in the Craftsbury Home Dem, served on the trustee board for the John Woodruff Simpson Library in East Craftsbury, was a member of the East Craftsbury Cemetery Board, and delivered Meals on Wheels for a time. She was also active as a volunteer at the Craftsbury Community Care Center in East Craftsbury. She loved to travel and saw a lot of the world with her friends. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing. She leaves three children: Dianne Young and her husband, Clair, of Craftsbury Common, Alan Young of Craftsbury Common, and Claire Aldrich and her husband, Michael, of Isle La Motte; a brother, Merle "Pete" Calderwood, and his wife, Letitia, of Burlington; a sister-in-law, Fielda Calderwood, of East Craftsbury; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in August 1966; and by a brother, Martin Calderwood, who died in November 2003. A memorial service will be held in the spring. , 77, of Wallingford died January 12, 2004, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Mr. St. Onge was born in West Glover on September 2, 1926, the son of Roy and Anna (Diette) St. Onge. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He moved to Barton following his honorable discharge. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Paquin in 1948. They moved to Connecticut, where he worked for Southworths in New Milford before moving back to Vermont in 1957. He was employed by Earl and Merry Construction and Central Vermont Public Service, retiring in 1985. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a lover of horses. He was instrumental in starting the Coon & Cat Club in Shrewsbury, the Green Mountain Sno Flyers club in Clarendon, and the Groovey Gallopers 4-H Club in Wallingford. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and Rutland American Legion Post No. 31. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" St. Onge, of Wallingford; three sons: Bradley and Chris St. Onge of Rutland and Fred St. Onge Jr. of Wallingford; two daughters, Cindy Fruean and her husband, Gordon, of Rutland and Melody Cannavan and her husband, William, of Woodford; two sisters, Gloria Loomis of Clarendon and Viola Adams of San Antonio, Texas; and three grandsons: Alfred St. Onge III, Bradley St. Onge, and Brian Cannavan. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles St. Onge; and by two sisters, Katherine Sheehe and Edna Hill. A Funeral Mass was held January 16 at St. Patrick's Church in Wallingford. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wallingford. , a former longtime resident of Keene, New Hampshire, died Tuesday morning, January 13, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare-Westwood in Keene. Mrs. Spinelli was born in Newport, the daughter of Arthur and Doris Gibney. She grew up in Newport, attending schools there. She moved to Keene where she worked for 12 years with the MPB Corporation, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed reading. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Sheila I. Neathawk of Keene; by her husband, Gordon F. Spinelli of Orange, Massachusetts; by two grandsons, Douglas and Gordon Neathawk of Rollinsford, New Hampshire; by a great-granddaughter, Madison Neathawk of Swanzey, New Hampshire; by a great-grandson, Nicolas Neathawk of Rollinsford; by a brother, Dale Gibney of Newport; by a sister, Berdina Baraw of Newport; and by many nieces and nephews. A brother, Gordon Gibney; three sisters: Lillian Rowe, Almy Gibney, and Erdine Gibney; and a sister-in-law and 50-year best friend, Charlotte Gibney, predeceased her. , 89, of Island Pond died peacefully January 17, 2004, at her home sourrounded by her family. Mrs. Riggie was born March 14, 1914, in St. Giles, Quebec, a daughter of Nicholas and Rose (Bagley) O'Gorman. In 1933 she graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Island Pond. On January 15, 1946, she married Kenneth Riggie, who predeceased her April 29, 1987. During World War II she worked in Maine and Connecticut in the shipyards. She was also a teachers' aide at Brighton Elementary School and a homemaker for several years. She was a communicate of St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Island Pond. She was a life member of American Legion Auxillary Post No. 80 of Island Pond and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by two children, Mary Ann Riggie and her husband, Robert W. Fisher, of Newark and Joseph Riggie of Island Pond; by a sister, Bertha O'Gorman of Island Pond; by the following grandchildren: Kyra S. Riggie of Block Island, Rhode Island, Mielle S. Riggie and her husband, Ted Broadwater, of Seattle, Washington, Rachel DeGeorge and her husband, Milton DeGeorge Jr., of Madison,Wisconsin, and Nicholas S. , 73, of Irasburg died peacefully January 16, 2004, in Newport, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Curtis was born December 30, 1930, in Irasburg, a daughter of Clement and Melinia (Poirier) Royer. On December 29, 1951, she married Nelson Curtis, who survives her. She retired in 1990 from Ethan Allen manufacturing where she was in charge of inventory control. She was very family oriented. She worked all her life, and she especially loved gardening. She is survived by her husband, Nelson, of Irasburg; by the following children: Terry Curtis and his wife, Cecile, of Brownington, Debbie Hamel and her husband, Raymond, of Orleans, Leigh Curtis and his wife, Sonya, of Irasburg, and Keith Curtis and his wife, Ginette, of Irasburg; by 11 grandchildren; by 11 great-grandchildren; by the following brothers: Philip Royer Sr. of Irasburg, Ernest Royer of Newport, Emile Royer of Irasburg, Raymond Royer of Irasburg, and Andrew Royer of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. , 94, of Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center, formerly of Peterborough and Concord, New Hampshire, died peacefully in Newport on Sunday, January 18, 2004. Mrs. Buchanan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 11, 1909, the daughter of Henry Minners and Henrietta (Wilson) Minners. She was educated at Public School 152 and graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn. On September 30, 1933, she married David Buchanan, who predeceased her in 1986. They lived in Brooklyn, Yonkers, and Chappaqua, New York, before retiring to Peterborough in 1974. She was formerly an active member of West Center Congregational Church in Bronxville, New York, the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua and Union Congregational Church of Peterborough as well as many clubs and organizations. She was employed by the New Castle Recreation Commission until her retirement in 1976. After retirement she and her husband were active members of the Peterborough Country Club. She moved to the Heritage Heights-Havenwood Retirement Community in Concord in 1991, where she assisted in the Cozy Corner Boutique. In 2001 she moved to Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center to be closer to her family. She is survived by her son Craig and daughter-in-law Barbara of Derby; by her grandchildren: Laurie Covino and her husband, Chris, of Northborough, Massachusetts, Doctor George J. Bender III and his wife, Heather, of Warwick, Rhode Island, Ian Buchanan of Waitsfield, Bryan Buchanan of Dover, New Hampshire, and Lisa Buchanan of Montpelier; by three great-grandchildren; and by seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four brothers: Arthur, Charles "Harry," Walter, and Howard Minners. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in the Minners' family plot at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.

, 93, of Newport died on Monday, January 12, 2004, after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Atchinson was born in North Hyde Park on September 19, 1910, the daughter of Charles and Euoleen (Foss) Kneeland, and the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Johnson Normal School for teaching. She began her teaching career in Pottersville and Hardwick, traveling by horseback to the one-room schoolhouses, then moved to Newport in 1943 to teach first grade in the Newport City schools, retiring in the mid-1970s. Her students will remember her high standards, fairness, and love for learning in the classroom. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the United Church of Newport. On June 22, 1945, she married Wayne L. Atchinson, a native of Morrisville, who predeceased her on July 7, 2002. They resided on East Main Street in Newport for their 57 married years. She is survived by her sons: Bob and his life companion, Becky Buchanan, of West Bolton and Montpelier, Gary and his dear friend, Susan Birgé, of Newport, and Jim and his wife, Jeanne, of Waterbury; by grandchildren: Keith and Jennifer Atchinson of Moosup, Connecticut, Joe Atchinson and his girlfriend, Sara Stanley, of South Burlington, Tony Atchinson, and Jessie Ross; by niece Joyce Emery of Hemet, California; and by other numerous nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her five brothers and seven sisters. Funeral services were held January 17 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. During her lifetime, she was a homemaker and helper on the family farm. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and crocheting. She held membership with St. Paul's Church in Barton. She worked as a nursing home aide and also did Medicaid billing. She was very active in the Jay Food Shelf and the Association for the Blind. She was a member of the Vermont Low Income Association in Montpelier and the Low Income Association of Newport. She is survived by her friends Theresa and Jacques Daigle of Troy; by her cousins: Shirley Dezotell, Helen Leno, Joyce Farrand, and Thomas Farrand. Dorothy Hunt Mattson

, 94, of Orleans died at her home on Saturday, January 24, 2004. Mrs. Mattson was born in Derby on July 29, 1909, the daughter of Fred E. and Maude (Porter) Hunt. She attended Orleans Elementary and Orleans High School, graduating in 1928. She then graduated from Massachusetts Women's Hospital School of Nursing in 1931 with a registered nursing degree. She worked at Worcester State Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she met Emil Mattson. They married on June 9, 1934. In 1938 they moved to Orleans, and she worked as a nurse at Orleans County Memorial Hospital and later at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans. She was active in the community. She was a member of Orleans Eastern Star, a member and past grand chief of the Pythian Sisters, and a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. She was active in the drama club and a member of the Book and Thimble Club. She was also a member of Orleans Methodist Church. Following her husband's diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's disease, they moved to Scituate, Massachusetts, to be near her children. There she was a member of Harbor United Methodist Church. True to her roots as an independent minded Vermonter, following the death of her husband in March 1974, she learned to drive at age 65. Being somewhat uncomfortable with lots of traffic, she would drive from Scituate to Orleans on the Interstate at 4 a.m. On one such trip she purchased "Shorty" Williams' home, which overlooks the house her father built, where she grew up and raised her children. She then returned to Scituate and announced to her children that she was moving back to Vermont. She attended the Orleans County Fair this August and missed being the oldest person in the grandstand by only a few months. Following a fall on January 20, she was essentially bedridden and received loving care from her faithful caregivers: Candy, Lucy, Jennifer, Shirleen, and Avis. She believed in planning ahead and requested the Reverend Roger Fletcher to officiate at her funeral service. She is survived by her children: Catherine Whitcomb and her husband, Bill, of Newport and Ormond Beach, Florida, Emily Robinson of Scituate, and John Mattson of Jay; by nine grandchildren; and by ten great-grandchildren. Friends may call on Friday, January 30, at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport from 6 to 8 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 10 a.m., with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. , 56, of Corona, California, died suddenly Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Corona Regional Medical Center. Born in Newport on June 29, 1947, Mr. Lucas was the son of Robert Lucas and Muriel Richardson. He graduated from Derby Academy in 1965. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970, achieving the rank of sergeant. Upon his discharge from the service he remained in California. For the past 26 years he made his home in Corona. He was a material scheduler for Boeing Aircraft in Long Beach for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; by two sons, Sean of Colton, California, and Shea of Rancho Cucamonga, California; by a brother, William, of Derby; by a sister, Sheila Diggs, of Fall River, Massachusetts; by his stepmother, Carol Lucas, of Newport; and by his stepfather, Ted Richardson, of Cowansville, Quebec. , 78, of Derby died in Newport on Tuesday, January 20, 2004, surrounded by his family. Mr. Guillette was born in Derby on August 27, 1925, the son of Euclide and Priscilla (Piquette) Guillette. He farmed on the Salem Derby Road for many years. He was a former member of the Newport Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 2155. He enjoyed working on the home farm, listening to music, and dancing. He went to listen and dance to his son's band for 29 years. On June 26, 1948, he married Anita Girouard, who survives him. He is also survived by his sons Marcel Guillette and his wife, Francine, of Derby and Armand Guillette and his wife, Teresa, of Derby; by his grandchildren: Anita McGowan and her husband, Jeremy, of Ohio, Marcy Guillette of Maine, Renee Guillette and her fiancé, Nathan, of Texas, Brandon Guillette and his friend, Dorie, of Derby, Tonya Guillette and her friend, Arnie, of Glover, Amanda Guillette and her fiancé, Mike, of Troy, and Armand Guillette Jr. and his friend, Jennifer, of Derby; by his great-grandson Austin McGowan of Ohio; by his brothers Wilfred Guillette and his wife, Aline, of Derby and Andy Guillette and his wife, Julie, of Derby; by his sister Theresa Beauchesne and her husband, Harvey, of Derby Line; by his twin sister, Madeline Messier, and her husband, Jean, of Derby; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, George; by two brothers; and by two sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 23 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. , 71, died January 25, 2002, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mrs. Conley was born March 18, 1930, in Coventry, where she attended school. She worked in local nursing homes for many years. She married Jesse Conley in 1974. He survives her. She also leaves five daughters and two sons. She is missed by her children and by her husband.

, 60, of Craftsbury died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at North Country Hospital in Newport, following a battle with cancer. Mr. Ashby was born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, on April 11, 1943, the son of William and Belanna (Sim) Ashby. He graduated from Central Kings Rural High School and attended Mack's Business College in Kentville, Nova Scotia. He came to Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1965, joined the U.S. Army, and served in the transportation division at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He married Carol Kosloski in 1969, and they made their home in Amherst. He worked many years for Foster Farrar Hardware Store in North Hampton, Massachusetts. In 1995 he moved to Craftsbury and purchased and operated the Craftsbury Country Store. He enjoyed spending time with his family, auto racing, snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoyed the local banter of friends and neighbors at the store. He leaves his wife, Carol, of Craftsbury and Amherst; two daughters, Lynne Ashby of Amherst and Lee Ashby of Craftsbury; two brothers, Larry Ashby and his wife, Nancy, of Centerville, Nova Scotia, and William Ashby of Belchertown, Massachusetts; a sister, Catherine Haylock, of Brentwood, Nova Scotia; and nieces and nephews. A brother, David, and a sister, Sylvia Ashby, predeceased him. Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Wednesday, January 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. or at Douglass Funeral Home in Amherst Thursday, January 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Amherst. , 53, of Derby died at his home on Saturday, January 24, 2004. Mr. Davis was born on March 13, 1950, the son of Howard and Enid (Fee) Davis. He was a self-employed landscaper. He lived in Florida for several years and moved to Vermont seven years ago. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his mother, Enid Davis, of Wildwood, Florida; by his sister Judy Emerson and her husband, Wayne, of Wildwood; and by several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

, 68, of Boston, formerly of Lee, Massachusetts, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Boston. Mr. Davis was born in Albany on April 16, 1935, the son of George and Florence Taylor Davis. His family moved to Lee in 1940. He was educated in Lee schools and was a 1953 graduate of Lee High School. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1957 and received his master's degree in chemistry in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He taught at Norwalk Community College in Norwalk, Connecticut, for 38 years, retiring in 1997. He then moved to Boston where he taught chemistry at Harvard University until becoming ill in spring 2003. He was an avid Red Sox fan and traveled to different ball parks throughout the country to watch them play. He is survived by sisters Sandra A. Brighenti of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Carolyn E. Turner of Whiting, New Jersey; by his companion of 43 years, Peter Constandy, of Boston; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held January 26 at Kelly Funeral Home in Lee.
