, died peacefully at North Country Hospital in Newport on January 5 , 2004, after 88 years of farming, raising a family with his wife, Iola, and working in the woods. Born July 21, 1915, in Holland, Vermont, the son of Orville and Lena Kelley, Mr. Kelley and his family settled in Derby. Following graduation from Derby Academy in 1933, he attended Becker College, graduating in 1935. A lovable curmudgeon and jack-of-all trades, he was perhaps best known for his fruit and vegetable stand that he operated on Route 5 in Derby for many years. Few local gardeners escaped his generosity, as he was always happy to share from a lifetime's worth of gardening advice, and few visitors left the couple's home during the summer without a bag full of vegetables. Avid outdoorsman, lover of puzzles and a good game of bridge, he enjoyed challenging others with humorous objects and brainteasers, often of his own creation. His reputation as a local character earned him an interview for a chapter in the book A Vermont Scrapbook, 50 Vermonters Remembered by Ellen Sullivan as well as a column in the Newport Daily Express. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Iola; by his son, Ronald Kelley (Ann Spearing) of Stowe; by his daughter Judith Rutty Godfrey (Jay Godfrey) of Suncook, New Hampshire; by two granddaughters, Kathleen Rutty-Fey of New Boston, New Hampshire, and Sarah Kelley-Spearing of Stowe; by one grandson, Patrick Rutty, currently in Saudi Arabia; by five great-grandchildren; by a sister, Frances Boisvert, of Michaud Manor in Derby Line; and by many nieces and nephews.
