, 79, of Greensboro died Friday, August 27, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mrs. Blair was born June 25, 1925, in Glover, a daughter of the late Fred and Ethel (Keith) Miles. She attended Sheffield public schools and Lyndon Institute. On December 4, 1954, she married Ward Riley Blair in North Thetford. She was employed in the Greensboro public school lunch program for several years. She was a domestic in the Greensboro area for many years, and a part-time companion for the late Helen Lyles. She retired in 2002. Mrs. Blair was a member of the Greensboro United Church of Christ, and the Greensboro Trotters. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, tatting, and the time that she spent with her grandchildren. Mrs. Blair is survived by a daughter, Patricia Flanagan of Greensboro; by a son, Milton Wright and his wife, Diana, of Hardwick; by a brother, Wayne Miles of Pownal; by a sister, Joanne Snelling of Greensboro; by eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Ward, on August 12, 1987. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 30, at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home in Hardwick with the Reverend Anthony Acheson of the Greensboro United Church of Christ officiating. Burial followed in the family lot in the William Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield. , 61, of Derby, passed away at his home on Monday, August 30, 2004. He was born in Derby on April 30, 1943, the son of Harold and Gertrude (Mason) Limlaw. On November 7, 1964, Walter married the former Betty Hauver, who survives him. Mr. Limlaw was a former member of the Derby Drift Dusters. He liked to hunt and fish at his camp in Derby. He enjoyed watching football and NASCAR racing. He also enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and his pet rabbit and dog Tasha. He was forever puttering around the house. He liked to give people a hard time just for the fun of it. He was a good father and husband. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Ricky Limlaw and his wife, Diana, of Morgan; Lisa Simmons and her husband, James, of Washington, Janet Roberge and her husband, Roger, of Barton, Walter Limlaw Jr. and Lori Royea of Derby, and Harold Limlaw and his wife, Christine, of Newport Center; by his brother, Robert Limlaw and his wife Betty of Newport; by his sisters Christina Williams of Brownington, Virginia Royer and her husband, Ernest , of Newport, Marion Corbitt and Roger Fournier of Newport, and Marilyn Gray and her husband, Brian, of Morgan; and by 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers David and Gardner. , 87, of Derby died August 28, 2004, in Newport. She was born December 28, 1916, in Holland, a daughter of Lee and Minnie (Boyle) Sanborn. On September 24, 1949, she married Wendell Mudgett who predeceased her in 1982. Mrs. Mudgett was employed as a registered nurse at the former Orleans County Memorial Hospital, former Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury and North Country Hospital. She was also employed for the late Drs. Mosher and Davis of Newport and Dr. Pearsons of St. Johnsbury and for the former Patenaude Rest Home and the Newport Health Care Center. She is survived by sisters-in-law Audrey Sanborn of Derby and Theresa Mudgett of Massachusetts; and by brother-in-law Kent Mudgett and his wife, Toni, of Massachusetts. She is also survived by nephews Lynn Mudgett and his wife, Joan, of Connecticut and Jeffrey Sanborn of Derby; by her niece Donna Grenier of Derby; and by a great-niece, Jennifer Grenier, and great-nephew, Christopher Sanborn, all of Derby. She was predeceased by a brother, Roy Sanborn, and a sister, Gertrude Smith. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. E. Philippa "Phil" Maloney

of Montpelier and formerly of Newport died on Monday, August 23, 2004. She was born November 13, 1929, in Barre, daughter of Henry and Frances (Marks) Sanders. She graduated from Derby Academy, class of 1947. On September 18, 1948, she married William "Bill" A. Maloney in Newport. They shared the next 53 years together. Mrs. Maloney had a full career with the Vermont Department of Employment and Training, where she began as administrative staff in the Newport office and at completion of her career had attained a position in senior management in Montpelier. Throughout her life Mrs. Maloney was active in community and public affairs. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 40 years, during which she held various positions and was actively involved with planning and organizing Girls' State. She was a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star and the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. In retirement she remained active in civic affairs, serving on several professional boards, including the Vermont Board of Chiropractors, the Vermont Board of Real Estate, the Board of Allied Mental Health Practitioners, and the Board of Barbers and Cosmetology, of which she was chairman. Additionally, she worked part-time at First Impressions Clothing in Montpelier. She was known as an avid reader and gardener, and for knitting stuffed animals for all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. These were hobbies she greatly enjoyed. Members of her family include her daughter Tanina Garabedian and her husband, Harold, of Montpelier; her son James P. Maloney and his wife, Susan, of Milton; nine grandchildren: Matthew, Jennifer, Julia, Robert, Shawn, Erin, Eric, Jason, and William; and two great grandchildren, Jakob and Kobe. She was predeceased by her husband, William, and son Michael. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p. m, and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 2, at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel at 37 Lake Road, Newport. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #21 will meet at the funeral home at 3 p.m. for a service. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p. m. Friday, September 3. , 84, of Newport died August 23, 2004, in Newport. She was born March 8, 1920, in South Portland, Maine, a daughter of John and Verna (Davis) Denham. On May 18, 1946, she married Richard Croudis who survives her. Mrs. Croudis was a member of the United Church of Newport and she was very active with the church Sunday School. She held membership with the American Legion Auxillary and North Country Hospital Auxillary. She and Mr. Croudis volunteered at the Newport Chamber of Commerce for several years. She is survived by her husband, Richard Croudis, of Newport; by her daughter, Catherine Croudis, of Falmouth, Maine; and by four nephews, one niece and several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Carolyn Dunham and Helen Preble. Funeral services were held at the United Church of Newport on August 27 with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Yarmouth, Maine. , 88, of Newport and of St. Petersburg, Florida, beloved wife of Alphonse Bessette of Bel-Aire, died peacefully Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at the Bel-Aire Care Center in Newport. She was born on May 28, 1916, in Yamaska, Quebec, a daughter of Edmund and Rosilda (Hebert) Cardin. On September 5, 1956, she married Alphonse Bessette who survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Bessette wintered 28 years in Florida and summered in Newport. Her family moved from Yamaska, Quebec, to a farm in South Troy and then to Rochester, New Hampshire, where she lived and worked in a shoe shop for several years. Besides her husband of 48 years, Alphonse, she is survived by a brother, Raoul Cardin of Cheyenne, Wyoming; by sisters Rose Alix of Newport and Archange Lefebvre of Dover, New Hampshire; and by a special niece, Pauline Dagasse of Newport, and many other numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the following brothers and sisters: Antoine, Alphonse, Adelard, Cardin, Blandine Cardin and Anna Tetreault. A memorial service was scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel, 37 Lake Road (formerly Bay Street), Newport, with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. , 72, of Norwalk, Connecticut, died peacefully on Thursday, August 26, 2004, in Newport. He was born May 17, 1932, in Newport, a son of Vernon and Marjorie (Clark) Nault. On July 29, 1952, he married Mary Demers, who survives him. Mr. Nault was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a machinist for Pepperidge Farms in Norwalk, Connecticut. One of the hobbies he enjoyed was putting together and flying model helicopters. He also liked fishing and boating. He is survived by his wife, Mary Nault of Norwalk, Connecticut; by two daughters, Mary Cina and her husband, Peter, of Westport, Connecticut, and Diane Beck of Norwalk, Connecticut. He is also survived by three grandchildren: John and Eric Beck and Matthew Cina. Mr. Nault is survived by a twin sister, Jeannette Spates of Derby, and also by sisters Frances Collady of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, and Pauline Davis of Dayton, Ohio. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held on August 28 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Peter O'Leary celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Lee John Curtis

, 49, of Brownington, died at his home on Sunday, August 29, 2004, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Curtis was a local logger and beloved husband of Lorene Curtis. He was born on December 19, 1954, in Newport, the oldest son of John and Ruth (Barrup) Curtis of Brownington. Mr. Curtis lived his entire life in Brownington. In 1996 he married Lorene Liberty of Brownington. An avid deer hunter, he was especially proud of his family's tradition of being the first hunters to hang a deer in the "hanging tree on 5A." Fair weather or foul would find him doing what he loved best - logging. In 1998 he was able to purchase his John Deer skidder, which he dubbed "easy money." He never did anything halfway as is reflected in his Brownington home and property. Besides his wife, he is survived by his father, John Curtis; by his brothers, Benny Curtis and his wife, Karol, and Lyle "Boggie" Curtis and his wife, Becky; by his sister, Penny Wheeler and her husband, Scott; by his step-children: Christopher Chicoine and family of Bakersfield, Deborah Williams and family of Newport, Patrick Chicoine and family of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Andrea Smith and family of West Charleston, Katrina Mallette and family of St. Albans, Alicia Glodgett and family of Hanover, Massachusetts, and April Elliott and family of Newport; by his nieces and nephews: Cory, Kelly, Casey, Curtis, Nicholas, Karissa, Emily, Marissa, and little Cory; by his uncles Dallas Curtis, Arnold Curtis, Sherrill Curtis, Robert Curtis, Everett Barrup, and Jim Barrup; by his aunts Margaret Planter, June Williams, Leora Whiting, Rachel Pray, and Sherry Barrup; by his special friends John "Boy" Stacey, Bobby LaCasse, and Brian Parenteau; by his dog Otter. He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Curtis, and by his brother Robin Curtis. , 85, of Brownington died suddenly Saturday August 28, 2004, in Newport. She was born March 28, 1919, in Irasburg, a daughter of Rush and Grace (Buck) Patrick. Mrs. Piper was a hard worker and a homemaker. She took care of her family and loved to have visits from her friends and family. She read the Bible daily and she also wrote daily in her diary. She was loved dearly by everyone who knew her. She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Doiron of Brownington; by a son, Stanley Piper of North Concord; and by the following grandchildren: Armand Doiron of Sanford, Maine, Linda Dupuis and her husband, Robert, of North Berwick, Maine, and Cynthia Lemieux and her husband, Steven, of Sanford, Maine. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Heather and Justin Dupuis, and Sean and Kyle Lemieux; and by a great-great-granddaughter, Summers Lee Ann Houde. , 16, of Westmore, beloved son of Elaine Cashin and the late Norman Earl Woolard, died suddenly Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in Westmore. He was born on October 14, 1987, in Southbridge, Massachusetts. Norman was a junior at Lake Region Union High School in Orleans. He enjoyed four-wheeling, waterskiing, and hunting and fishing. He played high school basketball, golf, and soccer. Norman enjoyed making people laugh through his jokes and impersonations as he always had a smile. He is survived by his mother, Elaine, and stepfather, Bill Cashin, of Westmore; by his sisters and brothers: Jacqueline Marie, Julianne Renee, Jennifer Roberta Woolard of Westmore, Callie Rae and Billy L. , 17, of Orleans, beloved son of Paul and Elaine Leno, died suddenly Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in Westmore. He was born on April 2, 1987, in Newport, a son of Paul and Elaine (Faust) Leno who survive him. He is also survived by a brother, Tyler Leno of Orleans, and his grandparents, Helen and Corcell Leno of Coventry, Romeo and Huguette Faust of Irasburg, and Alice Faust of Orleans. He is also survived by several aunts and uncles: Anita and Kevin Hodgeman of Lowell, Marielle Faust of Orleans, Lucille Bessette and William Thompson of Derby Line, Debra and Richard Geoffrey of Albany, Mark and Deborah Faust of Irasburg, Peter Faust and Sandy Hussey of Irasburg, and by his aunt and godmother, Karen and Maurice Fournier of Derby. Phil is survived by several cousins, many friends and by his cat "Little." He enjoyed playing basketball, video games and hanging out with his friends. He was looking forward to the start of school and graduation in the spring. Phil will be sadly missed but never forgotten. , 87, of Newport died peacefully August 27, 2004, in Newport. She was born September 21, 1916, in Newport, a daughter of Wilfred and Blanche (LeRoux) Lontine. She attended Sacred Heart School and on June 17, 1946, she married Maurice D. Gour who predeceased her. Mrs. Gour managed the former J.J. Newberry Store, was sales clerk for the former Montgomery Ward Department Store and former Bell Shop, all of Newport. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her two grandsons, and her longtime connection with St. Mary's Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Schools. She was an avid bridge player and she enjoyed all her friends. Mrs. Gour was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Newport, and a life member of the Daughters of Isabella and Ladies of St. Anne. She was a volunteer at the gift shop for North Country Hospital and she was a sub for the Goodrich Memorial Library. She is survived by three daughters: Sister Mary Ann Gour F.C.S.C.J. of Plattsburg, New York; Patricia Lavery and her husband, Raymond, of Shelburne, and Maureen Gour of Shoreham. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Nathan Lavery of Washington, D.C., and Kyle Lavery of South Burlington. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Jeannette Allen, and by a brother, Ernest Lontine. Funeral services were held on August 31 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer and Reverend Peter O'Leary concelebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport. , 79, of Greensboro Bend died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mrs. Withers was born June 18, 1925, in Campton, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Edward and Clara (Philbrook) Salls. She attended Greensboro public schools. On April 25, 1947, she married Kenneth Clayton Withers in Hardwick. They lived most of their married life in Greensboro and Greensboro Bend. In her earlier years she was employed at Hardwick Knitwear. She was affiliated with the Greensboro United Church of Christ. She enjoyed taking rides along the country roads, dancing, and sewing. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Withers and her companion, Brian Roy, of East Burke and Tami Lamberton of Barre; two grandsons, Travis Lamberton and Tim Colby; a brother, Ephraim Salls, of Greensboro; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, in 2000; by three brothers: Burton Tracy, Erwin H. Salls Sr., and Howard Salls; and by two sisters, Velma Webster and Gertrude Dunbar. To honor her request there will be no visiting hours. Graveside services were held September 7 in the Greensboro Village Cemetery with the Reverend Anthony Acheson of the Greensboro United Church of Christ officiating.
