, 75, of Lynn, Massachusetts, died at his home on Friday, August 1, 2003. Mr. Rounds was born in Newport on March 10, 1928, the son of Harold and Bessie (Ennor) Rounds. He worked in the x-ray department at the Cambridge Hospital, and he also tuned pianos. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and attending family gatherings. He is survived by his sisters Alice Button and her husband, Richard, of Sutton and Marjorie Glodgett and her husband, Louis, of Brownington; and by several nieces and nephews. , 92, of Derby Line died July 29, 2003, in Newport. Mrs. Rivard was born August 6, 1910, in Morgan, a daughter of Bernie and Ola (Elliott) Cargill. She attended area schools and went on to college and received her degree and certificate to teach school, which she did for a few years before staying home to raise her family. On July 4, 1938, she married Emile Rivard, who predeceased her in 1991. Flossie and Emile enjoyed traveling to Florida and visiting with relatives, especially after his retirement. Flossie always showed care and concern for all members of her family. She enjoyed family gatherings and derived great pleasure from visits with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her plants both inside and outside of the house. She is survived by her children: Richard Rivard and his wife, Shirley, of Derby Line, Dave Rivard and his wife, Diane, of Derby Line, and Paul Rivard and his wife, Diane, of Lunenburg; by seven grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by her brother Lyle Cargill and his wife, Edith, of Island Pond; by her sister-in-law Lillian Cargill of Morgan; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy; and by two brothers, Everett and Clifton Cargill. Funeral services were held August 1 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport.

, 84, of Brownington died in Derby on Sunday, August 3, 2003. Mrs. Poulin was born in Brownington on October 15, 1918, the daughter of Harley and Katherine (Lafoe) Allen. She was a cook in many of the area restaurants. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her dog. She married Marcel Poulin, who predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Geraldine Roberts of Derby; by her grandson Chris Lawson and his wife, Linda, of Grand Isle; by her brother Damion Allen of Derby; by her sister Ruth Goddard of Derby; by two great-grandchildren; and by one great-great-granddaughter. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 6, at St. Theresa's Cemetery in Orleans at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Daniel Rupp officiating. Interment will follow.

, 71, of Newport died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Born in Holland, Vermont, Mrs. Paquin lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, for 40 years before moving to Newport in 1995. She was employed by Mass Mutual where she worked in the gift shop for many years, retiring in 1993. She was a former communicant of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Springfield and an active communicant of St. Mary's Star of the Sea in Newport. She was also a member of the Community Circle and the After 5 Club in Newport. She leaves her husband of 48 years, Wilfred A. Paquin, of Newport. She is survived by six daughters: Patricia O'Brien of Bradenton, Florida, Gisele Anne Everett of Southwick, Massachusetts, Theresa Chiarizio of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Laurie Paquin of Chicopee, Massachusetts, Michelle Fernandes of West Springfield, Massachusetts, and Lynne Paquin of Chicopee; by her brother Leo Paul Pare of Derby Line; by three grandchildren: Stephanie and Danielle Everett and Joey Fernandes; by a great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Bednarz; and by many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her son Robert "Bobby" A. Paquin, who died in 1984; and by her brother Claude Pare. The funeral was August 4 at Hafey Springfield Chapels followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Springfield. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

He was a truck driver for Pike Industries, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran with the U.S. Marines. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, and visiting with his grandchildren. He is survived by his fiancée, Karleen Lanoue, of Glover; by two children, Robert Neil and his wife, Janet, of Derby, Connecticut, and Darlene Neil of Derby, Connecticut; by two stepchildren, Amy Braun and her husband, Bill, of Glover and Andre R. Lanoue of Orleans; by two stepgrandchildren, Ivan A. Lanoue and India L. , 85, of Barton died August 1, 2003, in Newport. Mr. LaBounty was born April 30, 1918, in Evansville, a son of Norbert and Julliette (Renault) LaBounty. On October 22, 1954, he married Laura D. Miressi, who predeceased him on January 11, 1982. He was a veteran of World War II. He entered the U.S. Army on February 24, 1941, and was honorably discharged on June 17, 1941. During his lifetime he was a self-employed painter and contractor. He moved back to Barton from Kingston, New York over 20 years ago. He held membership with St. Paul's Church in Barton where he was head usher for many years. He was also a member of AA for over 50 years. He is survived by his daughter Wanda Marie Waugaman and her husband, Gary, of Raleigh, North Carolina; by two grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren of Raleigh; and by two brothers, Simon LaBounty of Barton and Victor LaBounty of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by six brothers and by four sisters. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 8, at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton. , 82, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, died July 25, 2003, at the Salmon Brook Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided for several years. He was born December 4, 1920, in Glover, the son of George Tracy and Blanche (Paquette) Cook. He attended schools in Glover, Burke Hollow and Hartford, Vermont. For a short time he ran a bicycle shop in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Later he worked for many years at Pratt & Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was a very skilled workman. He enjoyed making motorized model airplanes, stamp and coin collecting, gardening, fishing and especially Scrabble. In 1953 he married Ruth Robinson, a New Brunswick, Canada, native who also worked at Pratt & Whitney. They adopted a daughter, Mildred, at age 12, whom they had cared for since her very early years. Her son was a great joy to them. Mr. Cook is survived by his daughter, Mildred Cook, and her son, Christofer, of East Hartford, Connecticut; by a sister, June (Cook) Young, of West Glover; by a sister-in-law, Yvonne Cook, of Citrus Heights, California; by David and Myrna Robinson and other members of the Robinson family of McAdams, New Brunswick, Canada; and by many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Cook, in 2002; by his parents, G. Tracy and Blanche Cook; and by his brother David H. Cook in 1995. A memorial service will be held at the East Hartford Congregational Church. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery.

, 68, of Barton died on August 10, 2003, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mrs. Wheeler was born in Barton on January 5, 1935, the daughter of Ted and Shirley (Sanders) Brown. She attended Barton Academy and graduated from Mt. Holyoke in the class of 1956. She married Richard Wheeler of Westmore. Before retiring, she worked as an AT&T operator in Boston and as a second-and third-grade teacher in Arizona. In California she worked for the Air Force doing wives activities and family services and as thrift shop manager. She worked in Vermont for the Northeast Kingdom Cannery and the Department of Employment and Training for 17 years. She was president of the Barton Literary Club and treasurer of Barton United Methodist Church. She is survived by her son Kevin John Wheeler of St. Johnsbury; by her sister Jackie Nattress of Pennsylvania; and by her brother Steven Brown of Barton. Memorial services were held at the Barton United Church on August 12 with the Reverend Michael Caldwell and the Reverend Joan Vincent officiating.

, 87, of Westmore and Southbury, Connecticut, died on July 26, 2003, in St. Johnsbury after a short illness. Mr. Isselle is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Emeline L. MacFall Isselle. He was born on February 2, 1916, in Stamford, Connecticut, to Charles and Florence (Chalice) Isselle. He was raised in Darien, Connecticut, where he was active in high school sports. He was the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 59 for 14 years and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He began his career as a landscaper and nurseryman in the Isselle family nursery. For the majority of his career he worked for Southern New England Telephone Company, retiring in 1976. Hobbies included woodworking, cabinetry, and gardening, and he was happiest when helping others. In 1978 Ralph and Emeline moved to Westmore, which they enjoyed since honeymooning there at Lake Willoughby in 1938. Since 1998, he and his wife have lived in Westmore and Southbury. Surviving him, besides his wife, are two daughters and their husbands, Janice and David Hapke of Wilton, Connecticut, and Susan and John Lange of Winsted, Connecticut; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanne Isselle Magnuson, of Darien. Sisters Charlotte Knight and Doris Bruno and brothers Louise, James, Mark, and Karel predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II. He worked for Hood in Newport for many years. He was a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alfred Pepin Post No. 798 of Newport. He is survived by his daughters: Lorelei Willis and her husband, Clifton, of Troy, Wanda Lawton and her husband, Art, of Perth, Ontario, Lorena Buck and her husband, Ed, of West Charleston, and Belinda Smith and her husband, John, of Rock Island, Quebec; by his sisters Winnie Lahue and her husband, Lawrence, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and Effie Greenwood of Rock Island; by ten grandchildren; by four great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson George Buck. A celebration of his life and a time of sharing was held August 11 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport. , 85, of Derby died in Derby on Sunday, August 10, 2003. Mrs. Hammond was born in Berkshire on July 21, 1918, the daughter of Harland and Ruby (Olmstead) Hoadley. She graduated from Enosburg High School. On August 12, 1937, she married John Hammond, and together they owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. He predeceased her on October 19, 1987. She enjoyed knitting, was an advocate for the elderly, and was an avid writer for the elderly writing to state representatives. She is survived by her children: Esther Bowman and her husband, Marshall, of Coventry, Robert Hammond of Charleston, South Carolina, Richard Hammond of Richford, and Dale Hammond and his wife, Debi, of Newport Center; by her sister-in-law Nellie Hoadley of East Berkshire; by her niece Dorothy Lamoureux of Berkshire; by her nephews Jim Hoadley of Vineland, New Jersey, and Patrick Hoadley of East Berkshire; by seven grandchildren; and by eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Gardner and Donald Hoadley. Mr. DeGreenia was born in Sheffield on February 3, 1931, the son of Walter DeGreenia and Emma (Chamberlain) Kettle. He attended school in Sheffield. During his life he worked as a logger, painter, and farm hand. He worked for Charlie Richardson of Sheffield as a farm hand and for Avon and Cleveland Minor of Lyndonville as a painter. He was a member of Sheffield Federated Church. He is survived by his brothers and their spouses and companions: Lyle DeGreenia and his companion, Wanda Reed, of Glover, Leslie and Althea DeGreenia of Sheffield, Phil and Patty DeGreenia of Glover, and Jason and Jossie DeGreenia of Sheffield; by his sister and her husband, Georgia and Harold Newland, of Sheffield; and by many nieces and nephews. , 77, of Newport died August 8, 2003, at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center in Newport, peacefully and with his family at his side. Mr. Craig was born in West Burke on March 28, 1926, to Alice Augusta Ames, a schoolteacher, and Alba Zeno Craig, a carpenter. He grew up in West Burke and attended St. Johnsbury Academy, graduating in 1945. He then attended Middlebury College for a year. He married Eunice Kathleen Young, who also grew up in West Burke, on October 23, 1948. St. Johnsbury became home where the couple raised their family. He was employed by the Ralston Purina Company for 22 years. In 1970 the family moved to Newport where he was employed by Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Services for 20 years, principally as comptroller. From 1975 to 1976 he was acting executive director and later participated in the Harvard Medical School continuing education program for mental health planners and administrators. Always surrounded by books, he was an eclectic reader and an accomplished writer. In 1987 he published AMEN - A Book of Uncommon Prayer and in 2001 A Lens Of Ice - poems and theorems. In addition he presented many papers for the Synapse Society, of which he was a longtime member. As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship since 1964, he was involved in leadership positions and enjoyed conducting services in area churches from the many sermons he wrote. In 1961 his woodworking skills shone through when he built Tulgey Wood, a treehouse (still in use) for his children at Newark Pond. Later he crafted dollhouses for his granddaughters, so strongly built that his great-grandchild is enjoying them today. He was one who could appreciate everyday pleasures - his wife's cooking, especially the birthday chocolate pies, classical music, jack-o'-lanterns, animals (especially dogs), an occasional dry martini, a rousing game of croquet, Groundhog Day, and loons. Some of his happiest times over the past 60 years were spent enjoying family, friends, and quiet times at the family camp at Newark Pond. He will be remembered foremost as a soft-spoken man of kindness and compassion, a passionate life-long learner and patient teacher, a man of unshakable principles and quiet humor. His survivors include Eunice, his best friend and wife for 55 years; their children: Cynthia and her husband, Paul Greenwood, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Reginald and his partner, Karen Frank, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Charles and his partner, Margo Trotier, of Burlington; grandchildren: Tammy Greenwood-Stewart and her husband, Patrick Stewart, of San Diego, California, Ceilidh Greenwood of Flagstaff, and Michael Appleby of Newport. In July Mr. Craig was able to meet his first great-grandchild, Mikaela Stewart, of San Diego. He was a special uncle to ten nieces and nephews and "brother" to Bernard and Barbara Blake of Lyndonville and Beverly Young of Gastonia, North Carolina. Also surviving are his treasured friends of many years. He was predeceased by his parents along with Arline Young, Gerald Young, Vanessa Brown, his granddaughters Miranda and Jillian Greenwood, and his dear friend James Hayford. At Mr. Craig's request, there will be no services. A gathering in celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. , 82, of Orleans, who was greatly loved by his family, died at his home on Thursday, August 14, 2003, after a long illness. Mr. Tarbox was born in Piermont, New Hampshire, on August 7, 1921, the son of Walter and Muriel (House) Tarbox. He graduated from Orleans High School in 1939. He was a Naval World War II veteran stationed in Hawaii. He was half owner and cook at Clayt's and Tab's Restaurant when a complete Sunday dinner cost $1.25. There he met his future beloved wife, Gertrude Waterman. He married her on May 31, 1949. With his wife's help, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1953 and then taught agriculture at Newbury High School for two years. He was the longest serving postmaster of Orleans, serving for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Post No. 106 of Orleans, American Legion Post No. 23 of Orleans, the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, and the Orleans Federated Church. He was also past secretary and treasurer of Pleasantview Cemetery Association. He enjoyed his family and his dogs as well as gardening, fishing, hunting, golfing, woodworking, and collecting coins and stamps. He was a gentle humorist. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; by his children: Carla Lund and her husband, Hugh, of Springfield, Sheila Seymour and her husband, Scott, of Eden, and Steve Tarbox and his wife, Patty, of Orleans; by his grandchildren: Adam, Erik, and Michael Lund, Ami English and her friend, Ray Lockamy, Gerry English and his friend, Tammy Mitchell, Nicholas Tarbox and his friend, Stephanie Rivers, and Corrinne Tarbox and her friend, John Couture; by his stepgrandchildren Brandon and Tiana Seymour; by his great-grandchildren Lili Lockamy and Emma English; by his stepgreat-grandchildren: Thomas Staudt and Mariah and Hillary Mitchell; by his sister Arlene Cummings of Orleans; by his sister-in-law Daisy Tarbox of Orleans; by his brother Walter Tarbox and his wife, Lorraine, of Coventry; and by ten nieces and nephews and their families. , 78, of Irasburg died suddenly August 16, 2003, in Newport. Mr. Shepard was born April 24, 1925, in St. Johnsbury, a son of Robert and Mamie (Wright) Shepard. On June 30, 1946, he married Marielle T. Royer, who survives him. During his lifetime he was a dairy farmer in Irasburg. He was employed for Drown's Mill as a debarker for ten years. For four years he was employed for the town of Irasburg as a road commissioner until his retirement. He was an active Boy Scoutmaster and unit commissioner. He also taught unit commissioners in several Boy Scout troops in the area. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 7763 of Orleans, of Fourth Degree Newport Gibbons Assembly No. 1157, and of the Irasburg Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Marielle Shepard, of Irasburg; by the following children: Robert Edward Shepard Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Marilyn Harding and her husband, Gary, of Chester, New Hampshire, Marcia Spates and her husband, Russell, of Lawrence; by four grandchildren: Steven and Theresa Harding and Sarah and Christine Spates; by four great-grandchildren: William, Matthew, Andrew, and Emily Plumer; and by a sister, Betty Bryer, and her husband, Leon, of St. Johnsbury. , 80, of Barton died in Newport on Monday, August 11, 2003. Mr. Prue was born in Newport on March 1, 1923, the son of Frederick and Olive (Pelky) Prue. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a supervisor at Ethan Allen, retiring in 1982. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 30 of Lyndon and Veteran of Foreign Wars Alfred Pepin Post No. 798 of Newport. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. On May 16, 1952, he married Lena Tosseau, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Marie Coons and her husband, Norman, of Sutton, Karen Lussier and her friend, Shane Allen, of Blandinsville, Illinois, Reginald Prue Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Westmore, Duane Prue and his wife, Marilyn, of Barton, Timothy Duffy and his wife, Sarah, of Burlington, and Louis Prue and his wife, Jennifer, of Hinesburg; by his grandchildren: Steven Jr. and Robert Lussier, Tanya and Jean Norris, and Crystal, Brittany, Bryant, Joshua, and Zoe Prue; by his great-grandson Sabastion Carroll; by his brother Frederick Prue of Irasburg; by his sisters: Madeline Collins of Littleton, New Hampshire, Elaine Daniels of Alaska, and Marion Lakin of Littleton; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers and by one sister. Funeral services were held August 15 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton with Father Daniel Rupp officiating. Interment followed at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell with full military honors. Alice Durland Niles

, 79, died at Windham Memorial Hospital in Willimantic, Connecticut, on Sunday, August 10, 2003. Mrs. Niles was the only child born to Oakey and Bertha (Schultz) Durland. She attended schools in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with high honors and membership in the Kappa Delta Pi honors society. For several years she worked as head of the typing department at Fort Bliss in El Paso. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and Rebecca Lodges and was a member of the First Christian Church in El Paso. On September 10, 1946, she married Captain John F. Schultz, to whom were born two children, John Schultz Jr. and Jackie Mae. During World War II the family lived in Japan and Austria. Following the death of her husband in 1966, she entered the University of Texas at El Paso in preparation for a teaching career. She became an outstanding teacher of primary grade children and was nominated for teacher of the year in El Paso. On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1969, she married Hazen G. Niles, an El Paso administrator, formerly of Newport Center. After retiring from the El Paso schools, she and her husband, both professional cake decorators, moved to Stafford Springs, Connecticut, and opened a Wilton cake decorating school known as The Cake Box. For 33 years they enjoyed doing what they enjoyed most - teaching others, young and old. She is survived by her husband, Hazen G. Niles, of Windham; and by two adult children, John Schultz Jr. and his wife, Jody, of Seattle, Washington, and Jackie Mae Battaglia of Ruther Glen, Virginia. In addition, she had several nephews and nieces, including Larry and Lynn Messier of Columbia, Connecticut, who have been unusually helpful in caring for her and her husband during these difficult days of illness. A private burial was held for Mrs. Niles at Hebron Cemetery in Connecticut.
Phyllis L. Ball

, 79, formerly of Middlebury and more recently a resident of Derby Green, died Thursday, August 14, 2003, in Derby. Mrs. Ball was born on December 3, 1923, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, the daughter of Christopher and Olivia Opsahl, who both predeceased her. She was married to Theodore N. Carr, who predeceased her in 1958. She married Albert W. Ball in 1960, and he predeceased her in 1993. She lived in the Boston area until 1972 when she and Mr. Ball moved to Middlebury. She was an active member of the Middlebury United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Until Alzheimer's disease claimed her mind, she had been an active volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Meals on Wheels, and the senior center. The light of her life was her family, and she is survived by her sisters Jean (Opsahl) Hatch Seeley of Middlebury and Eleanor (Opsahl) Aaron of Santa Monica, California; by her children: Christine C. Moseley and her husband, Mike, of Derby, Wallace G. Carr and Tina Lafferty of North Troy, and Jennifer B. Arnott and her husband, John, of Richmond; by her grandchildren: Wyatt, Olivia and Emmet Moseley and Julian and Johanna Arnott; and by her stepdaughters: Margery B. Kendrick, Louise B. Lang, and Judith B. Wells and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew Jeffrey B. Hatch of Orwell; and by her nieces Judith A. Turner of Idaho and Louise Aaron of California and their families. She will be remembered fondly by her many friends in all the communities in which she had made a home. She was predeceased by her son Steven O. Carr in 1988. Funeral services will be held at the Middlebury United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 23. , 69, of Barton died in Newport on Wednesday, August 20, 2003. Mrs. Renault was born in Barton on April 22, 1934, the daughter of Simeon and Almie (Valley) Renault. She owned and operated Blanche's Rubbish, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed hunting and fishing. She is survived by her brother Edmond Renault of Glover; by her sisters Julia St.John of Brooklyn, Connecticut, and Alice Demag of Winooski; and by several nieces and nephews. , 81, of Island Pond died peacefully on August 24, 2003, at her home with her family by her side. Mrs. Hunt was born November 12, 1921, in Island Pond, a daughter of Max and Ida (Bishop) Bailey. On September 11, 1942, she married Maynard Osborne, who predeceased her on January 13,1980. She later married Reginald Hunt on December 10, 1988, and he survives her. For many years she was a newspaper reporter for the Essex County Herald, which was a family business. She and Mr. Osborne owned and operated the school bus system for the town of Brighton for numerous years. She was also a dental assistant for Northern Counties Health Center in Island Pond, from which she retired. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 80 of Island Pond. She enjoyed dancing, knitting, reading, walking, swimming, camping, waterskiing, and going to beaches in Florida, and she was an avid snowmobiler. Besides her husband, Reginald, she is survived by her children: Barbara Boylan and her husband, Patrick, of Bellows Falls, Gary Osborne and his wife, Janet, of Island Pond, and Cynthia Gervais and her husband, Richard, of Island Pond; by her stepchildren Richard Hunt and his wife, Marlene, of Newport and Patricia King and her husband, Edward, of North Clarendon; by five grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by three stepgrandchildren; and by two stepgreat-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Kenneth and Bernard Bailey. Funeral services were held August 26 at the First Congregational Church in Island Pond with the Reverend Richard Miller officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond. , 91, of Lee, Massachusetts, died in Lee on August 16, 2003. Mrs. Besaw was born in St. Brigide, Quebec, on June 29, 1912, the daughter of Neopolitan and Delima (Cadieux) Gendron. She graduated from North Troy schools and received her teaching degree from Lyndon State College. She taught in many different school systems throughout Vermont. She moved to Lee 18 years ago and resided at Hyde Place in Lee where she held many leadership positions. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Lee and was a former member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 28 in North Troy. She enjoyed arts and crafts and was known for her apple pies. Besides playing cards she was an avid Boston Red Sox fan attending games into her eighties. On February 16, 1938, she married Roger Besaw, who predeceased her on January 7, 1985. She is survived by her children: Jeannette Rotondo and her husband, Ralph, of Lee, Muriel (Wise) Wasel and her husband, Tom, of Clearwater, Florida, and Alfred Besaw and his wife, Lee Ann, of Lebanon, New Hampshire; by sisters: Fay St. Onge of Florida, Juliette Lawrence of Essex Junction, and Georgette Lalime of North Troy; by ten grandchildren; by 18 great-grandchildren; by three great-great grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Philippe, George, Napoleon "Paul," and Romeo "Pat" Gendron; by her sisters: Ann Burnett, Antoinette Ladue, and Aurore Pigeon; and by her great-grandson Berkley Geascock. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on August 22. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Mary's Church in Lee on Saturday, August 30, at 10 a.m. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Besaw's memory to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vermont 05602; or people may donate books for children to a local library.
