, 79, of Derby died peacefully on July 11, 2003, at his home in Derby. Mr. Powers was born April 27, 1924, in Brownington, a son of Marshall and Georgeianna (Collins) Powers. On May 28, 1955, he married Elizabeth Broome, who predeceased him on December 13, 1999. He joined the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. He was a machinist for Butterfield Union Twist Company in Derby Line for 35 years. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf with his son-in-law Andre, and singing in the morning. He had a great sense of humor. He is survived by two children, Wendy Grenier and her husband, Andre, of Newport and Marshall Powers and his companion, Kristin Davis, of Paulden, Arizona; by two grandchildren, Barbara Powers and her friend, Zack, and Jacqueline Powers Willey and her husband, Anthony; by a great-grandchild, Jaden Powers Willey; by his dog, Zoe; and by family friends Kathleen Pelletier and Shanda Powers and her friend, Paul Mason. He was predeceased by two sons, Bryant Powers in 1979 and Nelson Powers in 1989; by a brother, Wilmer Powers; and by a sister, Helen Durgin. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Wood and to the doctors and nurses in the oncology department. A graveside service was held July 14 at Derby Cemetery with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed with full military honors. , 81, of Troy died in Newport on Wednesday, July 9, 2003. Mrs. Poutre was born in St. David, Quebec, on June 8, 1922, the daughter of Albert O. and Flore (Joyal) Petrin. She was an avid member of Sacred Heart Church in Troy and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and Community Circle. She was a volunteer for the Senior Companion Program in the Troy, Westfield, and Lowell areas for over ten years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing bingo, knitting, and traveling with family and friends. She also enjoyed her daily trips to the country store for coffee and conversation. She was a friend to everyone in Troy. She always had a smile on her face and was known as the family roadrunner. In 1947 she married Albert Brault, who predeceased her in 1969. She is survived by her children: Dennis Brault and his friend, Margaret, of Newport Center, Michael Brault and Alison Pappas of Newport Center, Diane Tyler and her husband, Wade, of Newport, and Patrick Brault and his wife, Donna, of Newport Center; by her grandchildren: Albert Brault, Heather Brault, Roxanne Brault, Dana Pappas, Ciera Tyler, Carl Tyler, Nathan Graves, Amanda Brault, and Samantha Corrow; by her brothers: Henry Petrin and his wife, Martha, of Claremont, New Hampshire, Victor Petrin of Keene, New Hampshire, and Gene Petrin and his wife, Florence, of Claremont; by her sister Anna Routhier of Webster, Massachusetts; by her daughter-in-law Kathleen Brault of Newport Center; and by her sisters-in-law Hazel and Christine Petrin. , 82, of West Charleston died peacefully at her winter residence in Edgewater, Florida, on Sunday, June 29, 2003. A longtime resident of Derby Line, Mrs. Morin was employed at Patenaude Rest Home for many years before her retirement. She is survived by her husband, Armand Morin; by four children: Patricia Preseault of Burlington, Bonnie Tasha of Edgewater, Marguerite Tyrell of San Diego, California, and David Morin of Charlotte; by one sister, Enid Delaney, of Exeter, New Hampshire; by nine grandchildren; and by nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Edward's Cemetery in Derby Line on Friday, August 1, at 10 a.m.

, 49, of Springfield, Massachusetts, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield on August 7, 1953, Mr. Lewis was the son of Mary (Stokes) Lewis and the late William C. Lewis. He attended local schools and was a Vietnam-era veteran, having enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971. He served as a transportation specialist and was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington, Fort Devens, Massachusetts, and in Arizona. He lived in Glover from 1980 to 1994 and was a piano refinisher and restorer for Young's Piano. He moved back to Springfield in 1994 and was currently employed by the city of Springfield as a maintenance worker at the Springfield Police Department. Besides his mother, he leaves a brother, David J. Lewis, of Springfield; two sisters, Carol A. Lewis of Boston, Massachusetts, and Leeann Lewis of Bradenton, Florida; a nephew, Carter Lewis Cramer, of Boston; an uncle, Walter Lewis, of Springfield; several aunts and cousins in England; and his many friends. The funeral was held July 11 at Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home with burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Massachusetts. , 93, of Greensboro died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Greensboro. Mrs. Davis was born December 22, 1909, in Lyndonville, the daughter of the late John and Flora (Campbell) Nash. She attended Lyndon Institute and graduated from Concord High School in Concord, New Hampshire, in the class of 1927. She continued her education at the University of Vermont, graduating in the class of 1931. She married Warner Lloyd Davis on August 22, 1934, in Burlington. She was first employed as a teacher of Latin and French at Randolph High School, and for several years she was assistant postmistress in Greensboro Bend. She was a very active member of the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid Society of that church. She was organist and choir director for nearly 70 years, playing until three weeks before her death. Other memberships include: the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Orleans County Retired Teachers Association, Greensboro Kazoo Band, and Senior Trotters. She had been an auditor for the town of Greensboro, trustee of Greensboro Free Library, and past president of the Parent Teacher Association in Greensboro Bend. Her positive, outgoing, empathetic nature and optimistic attitude always made her home in "The Bend" a gathering place filled with the scent of the baking of her famous bread, sounds of her piano, noise of the 4-H clubs she led, and the hospitality of tea and cookies. She loved activity and life - children, birds, music, wildflowers, card parties, cats and crossword puzzles, and most of all, people. She was a sports enthusiast from her years on the UVM tennis, basketball, and baseball teams, to playing shuffleboard in Florida. She later became an avid television game fan. In her retirement years she and her husband lived during the winter in their Tavares, Florida, home and enjoyed traveling over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Survivors include a son, John G. Davis, and his wife, Susan, of Queensbury, New York; two daughters, Nancy D. Hill and her husband, Lewis, of Greensboro and Sylvia D. Vatalaro and her husband, Charles, of Latham, New York; four grandchildren: Sheri O'Brien and her husband, Tim, Scott Davis, John Vatalaro and his wife, Melissa, and Christopher Vatalaro; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Warner, in 1996; and by a sister, Alice Wheeler. To honor her request there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the family lot in Westlook Cemetery in Glover. , 86, of North Troy died in Newport on Friday, July 11, 2003. Mrs. Plourde was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on March 27, 1917, the daughter of Elzeard and Mary (Belanger) Emond. She grew up on a poultry farm, and she always enjoyed gardening, hooking rugs, baking, antiquing, and making lamp shades. On March 2, 1946, she married Russell Plourde, who survives her. When they lived in Westport, Massachusetts, they owned a lawn and garden business. She enjoyed going flying with her husband. They moved here in 1985 to open a bed and breakfast in North Troy. She was a past president of the Ladies Guild at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in North Troy. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter Madeline Leary of North Troy; by her granddaughter Meagan Leary of North Troy; by her sisters: Blanche Lawrence of Maryland, Beatrice Rousseau of Westport, Massachusetts, Lillian Valcourt and her husband, Fred, of Somerset, Massachusetts, Lucille Hamlin of Whitstable, England, and Jean Medeiros and her husband, Raymond, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and by her sister-in-law Lorraine Emond of Westport, Massachusetts. , 81, of Newport died July 16, 2003, in Newport. Mr. Simonu was born September 15, 1921, in Derby, Connecticut, a son of John and Regina (Matoha) Simonu. On October 2, 1954, he married Theresa Duquette, who survives him. He entered the U.S. Army on September 23, 1942, and was honorably discharged on December 22, 1945. He was awarded the good conduct and victory medals and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. He was proprietor of J.B. Police Store of Newport from 1970 until 1992. He held memberships with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 798 and American Legion Post No. 21 of Newport. He enjoyed going to auctions and collecting tobacco cans and antiques. , 81, died July 14, 2003, at home surrounded by her family. Born in St. Metode, Quebec, on September 18, 1921, Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of Joseph and Marie Roy. She was very family oriented and enjoyed any family outing. She was a nurses' aide for several years in Concord, New Hampshire. She loved her horses and was always willing to lend a helping hand to less fortunate people with money and advice. She loved to walk alone or with family members. She was an active member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church and had many wonderful visits with the Reverend Larry Wall of the Church of God. She also enjoyed going to the senior meal sites and enjoyed being with her friends. She is survived by the following children: Denise Sanville and her husband, Israel, of Coventry, Nicole Johnson and her husband, James, of Newport, Claudette Hill and her husband, Richard, of Newport Center, Pierrette Besaw of Newport, John Chenier and his wife, Janice, of Chester, Carmen Thibodeau and her husband, Greg, of Mooresville, North Carolina, Peter Chenier and his wife, Celine, of St. Albans, and Monique Ring and her husband of Venice, Florida; by the following brothers and sisters: Dominic Roy and his wife, Yvonne, of Cookshire, Quebec, Lucienne Roy of Montréal, Quebec, and Lydia Benjamine of Farnham, Quebec; by 19 grandchildren; by 22 great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. , 66, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, surrounded by his family. Mr. LaBerge was born in Charlotte on August 28, 1936, a son of Elodien and Lena LaBerge, who predeceased him. He worked at General Electric in Burlington for many years where he received an appreciation award in May 1960. He worked at Hazletts Strip Casting in Mallets Bay for 22 years and was a campground owner during the summer months from 1985 until his death. He worked for LaBerge Printing in Orlando in the winters. He graduated from Middlebury schools, playing various sports. He was involved in many school activities. He coached South Burlington Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, and youth football and basketball. He was an active member of the South Burlington Rebels for many years and a member of the South Burlington Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Orleans Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Frances Oney LaBerge; by his children: Kathryn Hickey and her husband, Fred Jr., of Nashua, New Hampshire, Robert Jr. and his wife, Sylvie, of Jacksonville, Florida, Richard and his wife, Valerie, of Plano, Illinois, M. , 34, of Orleans, beloved husband of Nancy Butts, died suddenly July 15, 2003, in Evansville. Mr. Butts was born on August 31, 1968, in Putnam, Connecticut, a son of Norma (Crabtree) and the late Richard Butts. On August 7, 1993, he married Nancy Fabian, who survives him. He worked in the finishing department at the Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans for over nine years. He enjoyed snowmobiling and riding his Harley, and if he wasn't riding his Harley, he was working on it, collecting boulders and granite pieces for his landscaping projects, always helping someone in need, landscaping around the house, and spending time with his daughters and his wife, Nancy. , 80, a retired cook, died at Squire House in Waterbury on Monday, July 14, 2003. Mr. Beaudry was born in Albany on December 2, 1922, the son of Rodolphe and Anna (Jubinville) Beaudry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having entered the service from Newport in February 1941. He served in the European Theater and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, an American Defense Service Medal, and a European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with a Bronze Service Arrowhead. He was discharged in August 1945 from Ft. Devans, Massachusetts. He worked as a cook and chef most of his life. He owned and operated a restaurant in Barton with his father for many years and retired from the Vermont State Hospital as a cook in Waterbury. He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Waterbury. He leaves two sons, David of Eagle Point, Oregon, and Raymond J. of Barre; a daughter, Deborah Beaudry, of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a sister, Alphosine Worthly, of Malden, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers: Romeo, Gaston, Rene, and Marcel Beaudry; and by two sisters, Germaine Thereault and Claire LaMontagne. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Irasburg July 18 with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery in Irasburg. , 70, of Bradenton, Florida, and formerly of Derby, died at the Hospice House in Bradenton in July 5, 2003, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Newport on July 19, 1932, Mr. Bates was the son of Arthur and Irvie Bates. His childhood was spent on the family dairy farm. He graduated from Derby Academy in 1951 and attended Randolph Agricultural College. On March 1, 1953, he married Marion Robbins, and in March of this year they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He was a dairy farmer most of his life. Farming was his life. He was a past member of Derby United Church, singing in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Eastern Breeding Association and served on the sire committee. He earned several awards for his work and dedication. He was a past member of Navy Grange No. 495 and served as master. He was a lister for the town of Derby and a member of the North Country School Board. He was a member of the F&M Lodge of Newport. He enjoyed music, and after relocating to Bradenton in 1989, he was in quartets and choruses. He worked at The Shores in Bradenton as a security guard for ten years until poor health forced him to retire. He was a loving husband and father, and family meant everything to him. He will be greatly missed by everyone. During his final days, his dog "Spike" was a constant companion. Survivors include his wife, Marion, of Bradenton and his four children and their families: Nancy Lee Smith and her husband, McDonnell, and their children Tyler and Shannon (called "Sunshine" by her grandfather) of Presque Isle, Maine, Laurie Pray and her husband, Rodney, and their children Brittney and Dustin of West Glover, Kimberly Corey and her huband, John, of Farmington, Connecticut, and Christopher and his wife, Jeanne, of Derby Line and his children Jennifer Moffat and Jeremy, Bryan, and Adam Bates. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Jacob and Ben Moffat and Dylan and Hannah Bates; and by his sister Priscilla Belway of Bradenton and her family. , 76, of Newport Center died July 21, 2003, in Newport. Mrs. Hammond was born July 19, 1927, in Newport, a daughter of Lewis and Violet (Henderson) Guy. On January 11,1948, she married Lyle William Hammond, who predeceased her on October 15, 2001. She graduated from Burdette Business College in Boston, Massachusetts. She began her career as legal secretary for a law office in St. Johnsbury. After her marriage she was a helpmate with the family farm in Newport Center for more than 30 years. She later was employed as a secretary to Phil Rowell at Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans for several years. She held membership with the American Legion Post No. 21 Auxiliary of Newport for 22 years. She is survived by her children: Lynn O'Leary of Waterville, Laurel Hammond and her husband, Neal Smith, of Fletcher, and Leslie Hammond and his wife, Donna, Leonard Hammond and his wife, JoAnne, and Charles Hammond and his wife, Jean, all of Newport Center; by 15 grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; by the following sister and brothers: Phyllis Jones of Ludlow, George Guy of St. Johnsbury, Donald Guy and his wife, Norma, of Ludlow, and Ronald Guy of Lyndonville; by a sister-in-law, Vivian Urie, of Newport; by brother-in-law Winston Hammond and his wife, Lucille, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. , 61, of Hadlyme, Connecticut, died July 21, 2003, in Middletown, Connecticut. Mr. Aldrich was born July 11, 1942, in Windsor, a son of Marion (Fox) Aldrich and the late Roderic Aldrich. On July 30, 1966, he married Neta Brooks, who survives him. He was a heavy equipment operator for K.C. Mazer Company in Connecticut. He enjoyed working with the earth, not only on a job but to dig stones, rocks, etc., for use in landscaping and any other use his clients may have had. Family was a big part of his life and he loved family gatherings. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family members. He enjoyed wildlife in general. He is survived by his wife, Neta Aldrich, of Hadlyme; by his mother, Marion Aldrich, of Brownington; by the following children: Tim Aldrich of New Hampshire, Rodney Aldrich and his wife, Everlyn, of Richford, Ronald Aldrich of Richford, Wanda Sorrelle and her husband, David, of East Hampton, Connecticut, Ted Aldrich and his wife, Tammy, of West Charleston, Michael Aldrich and his dear friend, Kim, of Ocala, Florida, and David Aldrich and his wife, Sharon, of Haddam, Connecticut; by 15 grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by two brothers, Michael Aldrich and his wife, Claire, of Isle LaMont and Steven Aldrich and his wife, Linda, of Brownington; by a sister, Gail McKenna, and her husband, Tim, of Jericho; and by several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was predeceased by a granddaughter. Funeral services were held July 26 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery in East Charleston. A memorial service will also be held on August 4 at 6 p.m. at the Old Lyme Public Hall in Hamburg, Connecticut.

, 68, of Irasburg, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport. Mrs. Coderre was born July 18, 1935, in Albany, the daughter of the late Abner and Eulalee (Shedd) Poutry. She attended Albany public schools. She married Marcel Coderre on August 21, 1954, in Barton. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and craft work. Survivors include her husband, Marcel and a daughter, Verna Coderre, both of Irasburg; a brother, Olmand Poutry and his wife, Ethel, of Clinton, Massachusetts; two sisters, Bessie Poutry of Rockingham, North Carolina, and Dorcas Suitor and her husband, David, of Swanton; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Vanesa Coderre; and a brother, Percy Poutry. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at the United Church of Irasburg with the Reverend Rona Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the Craftsbury Village Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vermont 05602.

, 78, a longtime resident of Island Pond, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at his home. Mr. Gillis was born in Island Pond on March 29, 1925, the son of George and Maria (St. Pierre) Gillis. He attended St. Mary's School as a youth. He served his country during World War II in the Philippines as a harbor craft operator for the U.S. Army. As a private first class, he was responsible for transporting men and supplies from ship to shore. He worked for the Canadian National Railroad for over 30 years as a bridge and building engineer. He was a member of American Legion Island Pond Post No. 80 and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Island Pond Random Post No. 2309. He enjoyed trips to Alaska and North Carolina with his wife, hunting and fishing locally and in Alaska, and riding around on the back roads and woods watching the wildlife. He loved working with wood, making many gifts for family and friends. On February 2, 1952, he married Alice R. Carr, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Dave Gillis and his wife, Linda, of North Carolina, Betty Biggs and her husband, Paul, of Barre, Brian Gillis of Shelburne, Steve Gillis and his wife, Laura, of Alaska, and Donna Chesney and her husband, Roger, of Island Pond; by his brother J. Albert Gillis of Burlington; by 14 grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Scott; and by his sister Gertrude Bulakites. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 26 at St. James Catholic Church with the Reverend William Morgan officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond with military honors.
