, 75, of Derby died in Newport on Thursday, April 17, 2003. Mr. Dalley was born in East Bridgewater on June 24, 1927, the son of Frank L. and Anna (Newell) Dalley. He worked for many years in the area as a farmer, most recently for the Palin Farm in Derby for 13 years. He enjoyed bowling and fishing. On May 4, 1963, he married Marilyn Green, who survives him. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Robinson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Gerald Edwin Dalley Jr. in 1987; and by 13 brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held April 21 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans.

, 55, of Newport Center died in New London, Ohio, on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, after a long illness. Ms. Adams was born in Newport on September 30, 1947, the daughter of R.W. "Bill" and Elaine (Dubois) Adams. After graduating from Newport Center High School, she worked at the Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Home for 14 years. Following that she worked at North Country Hospital for 15 years. While working at North Country Hospital, she graduated from the accredited dietary management program at Auburn University. She went on to earn her dietary managers certificate and was also a member of the Dietary Managers Association. Through the years, she was a member and instructor for the 4-H club. She enjoyed knitting and cross-stitching. She displayed and sold her products at crafts shows and local stores and gave many as gifts. She derived great pleasure from her animals, which were not only her pets, but also her companions. She is survived by her brothers Ransom W. Adams IV and his wife, Charmaine, of New London and Peter Adams and his wife, Linda, of Little York, New Jersey; by her sister, Frances Hutchins and her husband, Richard, of Dallas, Texas, by nieces and nephews; and by her dog, Max. She was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Elaine Adams. She was a member of Newport Center United Methodist Church. She was in the choir and had been a Sunday school teacher. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 3, at Newport Center United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. There will be calling hours one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will follow in Newport Center Cemetery. , 76, of Orleans died April 25, 2003, in Newport. Mr. Tarbox was born June 7, 1926, in Irasburg, a son of Walter and Muriel (House) Tarbox. On August 21, 1946, he married Daisy Sanderson, who survives him. He owned and operated his own dairy farm in Orleans for many years. He was a self-employed tax preparer for many years. He was the national president for Future Farmers of America during his senior year of high school and held memberships with the Northeast Kingdom Horsemen's Association, Vermont Real Estate Board, and Vermont Tax Practitioners Association. He was treasurer of Orleans Federated Church, and he was an auctioneer. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Tarbox, of Orleans; by the following children: Neal Tarbox and his wife, Judy, of Massanutten,Virginia, Mark Tarbox and his wife, Sharon, of Derby, Kim Haley and her husband, Brian, of Orleans, and Terri Brown and her husband, David, of Forest, Virginia; by nine grandchildren; by one great-grandchild; by the following brothers and sister: Walter Tarbox of Coventry, Carlton Tarbox of Orleans, and Arlene Cummings of Orleans; by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Milton Tarbox. Funeral services were held April 29 at Orleans Federated Church with the Reverend Bruce Forbes officiating. Interment followed in Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. Doctor Deane Fremont Mosher

died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at his home in Newport. Dr. Mosher was born December 8, 1916, in Newport, the son of Benjamin and Elfreda Badger Mosher. He graduated from the University of Vermont magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1938 and its college of medicine cum laude in 1941. On June 19, 1941, he married Mary Pierce of Newport, cementing a love that lasted an additional 61 years. After an internship at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, he entered military service, and from 1942 to 1945 served as commanding officer of the 886th Collection Company, 56th Medical Battalion. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and five battle stars. Campaigns included North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, Rome-Arno, and finally the invasion of southern France and movement through the Vosges Mountains into Germany. He was discharged a major. He trained in surgery at Boston City Hospital from 1946 to 1949. He then moved back to Newport where he re-established surgery at the Orleans County Memorial Hospital. He practiced until 1981, delivering a tremendous amount of skilled and compassionate care to the citizens of the Newport area. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as vice president of the Vermont Medical Society. He had many interests outside of his cherished profession - reading, playing tennis, fishing, gardening, and playing bridge. He was a proficient chess player, winning the city championship in Hartford in 1941 and the Vermont state title in 1951. He was afflicted with a passion for golf and was heavily involved in the affairs of Newport Country Club. He is survived by his brother Bruce Mosher and his wife, Betty, of Newport; and by sister-in-law Billie Mosher of Calabash, North Carolina. His brother Maurice Dayton Mosher predeceased him. He was devoted to his family: Doctor Deane Mosher and his wife, Fran, of Madison, Wisconsin, Barbara Liberty and her husband, Charles, of Amherst, New Hampshire, Charles Mosher and his wife, Susan, of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Doctor Mary M. Beerworth and her husband, John, of Shrewsbury; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His dearly loved wife, Mary, died on August 21, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the United Church of Christ in Newport. , 51, of Newark died peacefully April 26, 2003, in Newport with his family at his side. Mr. Monfette was born December 19, 1951, in Newport, a son of Alfred and Blanche (Farrar) Monfette. On May 27, 1972, he married Cynthia Norris, who survives him. He was employed by the city of Newport for many years. He loved spending time with his four granddaughters, and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Monfette, of Newark; by his children Seth Monfette of Newport and Jaime Wales and her husband, Greg, of Palmer, Massachusetts; by four granddaughters: Kylie, McKenna, Logan, and Kerigan; by his parents, Alfred and Blanche Monfette, of Newport; by the following brothers and sisters: Alfred "Shorty" Monfette and his wife, Maria, of Mims, Florida, Craig Monfette and his wife, Sue, of Newport, Dian Mackintosh and her husband, Don, of Woodbridge, Virgina, Linda Wheeler of Newport, and Darlene Grenier and her husband, Albert, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. , 48, of Glover died in St. Johnsbury on Thursday, April 24, 2003, surrounded by his family. Mr. Mason was born in Sheffield on February 13, 1955, the son of Joel and Rosalind (Blair) Mason. He worked as a truck driver for Acro Redi-Mix. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son Lucian. He also liked to play horseshoes and cards with his friends and particularly enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a friend to everyone he met and had a very infectious and distinctive laugh. He also derived great pleasure from his animals. He is survived by his son Lucian Mason and friend, Dawn Daniels, of Irasburg; by his grandchildren Matthew Mason of Irasburg and Haley Allen of Charleston; by his brother Leroy Mason of Barton; by his sister-in-law Grace Mason of Barton; by his sisters: Simone Mason of Glover, Paulette Noyes and friend, Byron Moore, of Waterford, and Lorraine Williams and her husband, Donald, of Waterford; and by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. MacNichols was born on September 18, 1910, in Saxton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Alfred and Anna (Carberry) Perrin. She was predeceased by her husband, John L. MacNichols, and by a son, Grant MacNichols. She is survived by three sons and their wives: John A. and Pat MacNichols of Jacksonville, Florida, Charles W. and Kim MacNichols of Cotati, California, and Herbert R. and Patricia MacNichols of Glover; by 12 grandchildren; and by four great-grandchildren. , 85, of Orleans died April 25, 2003, in Newport. Mr. Lavoie was born August 2, 1917, in Barton, a son of Louis and Ellen (Labounty) Lavoie. On September 9, 1940, he married Madeline Alberghini, who predeceased him in 1992. He entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Weaver DE-741. During his tour they captured a Japanese submarine and observed the signing of the peace treaty. During his lifetime he was a machinist and tool maker for Union Twist Butterfield's in Derby Line, retiring in 1983. He was a caretaker of St. Theresa's Cemetery Association for over 40 years. He held memberships with the Orleans Rod and Gun Club, American Legion Post No. 23 of Orleans, and the Orleans Fire Department and Ambulance Squad. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He is survived by the following children: Linda Gariepy and her husband, John, of Newport, Judith Perkins and her husband, Larry, of Westmore, Nancy Dieudonne and her husband, Robert, of Irvine, California, David Lavoie and his wife, Jane, of Orleans, and Theresa Granai and her husband, Robert, of Sugar Hill, Georgia. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; by 15 great-grandchildren; by a brother, Donald "Joe" Lavoie of Nanasus, Virginia; and by seven nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held April 29 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with Father Leo Bilodeau celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in St. Theresa's Cemetery with full military honors. , 82, of Westfield died in Newport on Sunday, April 27, 2003. Mrs. LaPlume was born in Barre, Quebec, on November 14, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Roseanna (Filio) Cyr. She graduated from Sacred Heart Elementary School and Newport High School. She worked as a bookkeeper in a Newport store for 11 years before marrying Rosaire Laplume on May 27, 1947 and moving to Westfield. She was the Westfield town clerk for over 20 years. She also was Westfield town treasurer for 20 years, the clerk for the school board for 29 years, treasurer for the school's hot lunch program, a notary public, business manager for Missisquoi Valley Ambulance, and the Saturday postal clerk for 24 years. She loved her jobs and especially enjoyed meeting people from all over. She and her husband also had a dairy farm in Westfield for 29 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy and a member of the ladies of Sacred Heart. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and her husband. She is survived by her husband, Rosaire, of Westfield; by her children: Gerard LaPlume and his friend, Leona Burleson, of Westfield, Yvan LaPlume and his wife, Connie, of Westfield, Yvette Sheltra and her husband, Paul, of Irasburg, Rachel Exell of Independence, Louisiana, Guy LaPlume and his wife, Rita, of Milton, Cyril LaPlume and his wife, Linda, of Derby, and Andre LaPlume and his wife, Jan, of Hixson, Tennessee; by her sister-in-law Mary Jane Cyr of Newport; by 14 grandchildren; by 12 great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. , beloved son of Cathy Shepard and Kevin Berry, died suddenly in Holland on Monday, April 21, 2003, at age 16. Ryan was born on February 12, 1987, in Newport. He was a tenth-grade student at Lake Region Union High School. In his short time on earth he enjoyed many interesting hobbies such as building model trains, working with computers, and fixing up cars. Most of all, Ryan touched, in his own special way, the lives of many people in his family circle, his school peers, his teachers, and staff at Lake Region that influenced his upbringing and academic progress. Ryan will be sadly missed by his beloved mother and stepfather, Cathy and Stuart Shepard, of Holland; by his father and stepmother, Kevin and Sally Berry, of Barton; by his maternal grandparents, David and Bonnie Rice, of West Charleston; and by paternal grandparents, George and Anne Berry, of Mumsville, New York. Ryan also leaves behind his sisters: Liza, Miranda, and Brittany; his stepbrother and stepsister, Jason and Amanda Baraw; nephews Dawson and Dillon; niece Laney; and stepgrandparents, Byron and Betty Cook, of Irasburg. Along with several uncles, aunts, and cousins, his uncle Chris and cousin Mike had a special place in Ryan's heart. He will be missed by Jesse Tatum, a teacher at Lake Region who provided needed support for Ryan; and by a special friend, Roger Ashman, from West Charleston. , 76, of Island Pond died at his home on Friday, April 25, 2003. Mr. Ashman was born in Holland, Vermont, on April 21, 1927, the son of Edward and Mable (Hartley) Ashman. His mother died when he was four, and his father later married Violet Cole. He worked as a janitor at Derby Line Elementary School for 14 years. He enjoyed making wood crafts, gardening, fishing, and hunting. On October 27, 1950, he married Merna Wilcox, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Ronald Ashman and his wife, Elaine, of Derby, Carol Cross and her husband, Alfred, of East Haven, and Allan Ashman and his wife, Becky, of Island Pond; by his grandchildren: Kim Macie, David Dority, Tracie Ashman, Terry Ashman, Amy Poutre, and Bryan Ashman; by his great-granddaughter Mary Ashman; by his brother Larry Ashman of Morgan; by his sister Edith Hughes of Lennoxville, Quebec; and by nieces and nephews.
