, 64, died in Alexandria, Virginia, on March 16, 2003, following a brief illness. Mr. Telford was born July 26, 1938, in Ft. Benning, Georgia, a son of Army Lieutenant Sidney T. and Virginia Allen Telford. He attended Derby Line Elementary School and Derby Academy and graduated high school at Manlius Military Academy in Manlius, New York, in 1956. He attended Norwich University for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Paraguay. He joined the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service in 1963 and retired after 24 years of service. His posts as regional security service officer included the Ivory Coast, Cambodia, Lebanon, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Great Britain. During his tenure at the State Department he took leaves of absence to serve two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was discharged from the Marine Corps with the rank of captain. He was given the Department of State Award for Valor and the Superior Honor Award for his performance in Lebanon and Cambodia. In the early 1970s he was recognized as the last American to leave the war-torn country of Cambodia. Following his retirement from the State Department, he worked as an international security consultant. He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, the Marine Corps Association, the George Mason Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Scottish American Military Society, the Marine Corps Counterintelligence Society, the Clan MacDougall Society, the St. Andrews Society of Washington, D.C., and the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, Karwartha Branch. He is survived by his daughters Rosanna Maria Telford of San Jose, Costa Rica, and Carla Shelby Telford of Annandale, Virginia; by his son Andrew Symmes Telford of Alexandria; by his grandchildren: Michelle and Danny Gonzales of San Jose and Christian and Konrad Hutt, Alex Telford, and Kyle Meissner, all of Annandale; by his sister Mary Paull of Newport; by his nephew James Paull, U.S. Navy stationed in Naples, Italy; and by his friends Mary Harriss Symmes of Alexandria and Jack Meissner of Annandale. A memorial service was held in Alexandria on March 22. Burial will take place in Derby Line in the summer. , 78, of Barton died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Sunday, March 30, 2003. Mr. Larocque was born in Albany on April 20, 1924, the son of Henry and Mary Ann (Bean) Larocque. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart for bravery and was also awarded a bronze star and a good conduct medal. He worked as a foreman at Union Butterfields in Derby Line for 33 years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Barton Post No. 76. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with his great-grandsons Tanner and Hayden. On November 22, 1952, he married Genevieve Ferrin, who predeceased him on October 28, 1991. He is survived by his daughter Sharon Bickford and her husband, Roland, of West Glover; by his wife's two sons, Wayland Baxter of Glover and Leslie Baxter of Salem, New Hampshire; by his special friend, Viola Mayo, of Florida; by his grandchildren: Regina Amyot and her husband, Jean, of Barton, Stephanie Patrick and her husband, Christopher, of West Glover, Kim Tanner and her husband, Richard, of Lyndonville, Karen Rose and her husband, Ronnie, of Virginia, Mark Baxter and his wife, Renee, of Kirby, and Wayland Baxter Jr. of Virginia; by his great-grandchildren: Tanner Bickford, Hayden Patrick, Avery, Jenifer, and Travis Rose, Chris, Jessica, and Sarah Baxter, and John Shanks; by his sisters Edna Chamberlain of Glover and Louise Scott of Kentucky; and by several nieces and nephews. , 77, of Glover died March 29, 2003, at his home. Mr. Ferrie was born January 5, 1926, in Taunton, Massachusetts, a son of Manuel and Maria (Carvalho) Ferrie. He entered the U. S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. He married Dorothy Nichols, who predeceased him March 19, 1991. He was a supervisor for many years for Bay State Crucible, retiring in 1990. After retiring he moved to Glover in 1992 to be near his daughter Jana. He is survived by two children, Jana DaSilva and her husband, Ed, of Glover and Darlyne Gray of Stoughton, Massachusetts; by the following grandchildren: Tara Smith and her husband, Carl, Ed DaSilva, Lea Geraw and her husband, Raymond, Kim Weeks, and Chris Gray Jr.; by the following great-grandchildren: Cassandra and Carl Smith, Vikki and Destiny Geraw, Justin, Morgan, and Donnie Weeks, and Brandon Gray; by two brothers, Eugene Ferris of Swanea, Massachusetts, and Francis Ferrie and his wife, Elsie, of Plymouth, Massachusetts; by a sister, Lillian Andrews, and her husband, Donald, of Taunton; and by several nieces and nephews. On June 18, 1949, he married Gervaise Quirion who survives him. He was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed working with wood and walking. He is survived by his wife, Gervaise Belanger, of Derby; by the following children: Diane Belanger of Newport, Andre Belanger and his wife, Charlie, of Orlando, Florida, Denis Belanger and his wife, Trudy, of Holland, Laurette Baraw and her husband, Kenneth, of Chelsea, Francine Linn and her husband, Pete, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Manon Higginson of Newport; by ten grandchildren; by 28 great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Jeannette Garand of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Isabelle Belanger of Toronto, Canada; and by several nieces and nephews. , 72, of Delray Beach, Florida, and formerly of Newport died on March 16, 2003. Mrs. Barnard was born in Waterloo, Quebec, and was the daughter of George and Gladys Streeter. She and her husband, Nip, owned and operated Nip's Drive-In in Newport and Barnard's Carpet Barn in Delray Beach. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter "Nip," and by a son, Barry James Barnard. She is survived by two sons, Brian D. Barnard of Tallahassee, Florida, and Craig W. Barnard of Boca Raton, Florida; by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Barnard-McCall, of Delray Beach; by four grandchildren: Brian and Christopher Barnard, Morgan McCall, and Andrew Barnard. A memorial service was held March 30 at the Church of the Palms in Delray Beach. A graveside service will be held on June 8 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. , 83, of West Charleston died in Newport on Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Mr. Allen was born on April 22, 1919, in West Charleston, a son of Daniel Vernon and Susan Anna (Gilfillan) Allen. On June 8, 1940, he married his school sweetheart, Esther M. Holmes, who survives him. He owned and operated a dairy farm for many years and also drove a logging truck. He had a great love for his family. He adored hunting, fishing, and trapping and also enjoyed operating his sawmill. He is survived by his wife, Esther Allen, of 62 years; by his children Jackson H. , 48, of Derby died peacefully surrounded by her family in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Thursday, April 3, 2003. Mrs. Worth was born in Holland on November 30, 1954, the daughter of Gaston and Rita (Veilleux) Lefebvre. On August 21, 1976, she married William "Bill" Riley Worth, who survives her. She was a 1973 graduate of North Country Union High School and a 1975 graduate of Fannie Allen Nursing School, earning a licensed practical nurse degree. She later received a degree in respiratory therapy. She worked at North Country Hospital as a licensed practical nurse and respiratory therapist, then at Keene Medical as a respiratory care consultant, traveling in northern Vermont and New Hampshire where care was needed. Most recently she was the office manager at Worth's Seamless Rain Gutters with her husband. She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line and was very involved with church activities. She was also a past board member of Sacred Heart School. She enjoyed buying and restoring antiques, skiing, and gardening. She was educated in Vermont and Boston, Massachusetts. She resided in Danvers from 1965 until the time of her death. She was employed as an office manager with Pierce Equipment Company until her retirement. She was a member of Orleans Federated Church and the Maple St. Congregational Church in Danvers. She is survived by a daughter, Janna Lee DeLuca, of Danvers; by a sister, Mariam Delaney, and her husband, Jack, of Topsfield, Massachusetts; by two brothers, Paul Racine and his wife, Betty, and Thomas Racine of Orleans; by five nephews: Ryan and Jason Racine and Timothy, Christopher, and Jeff Delaney; and by a niece, Shana Preble. , 84, of Hardwick died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mr. Chase was born March 6, 1919, in Craftsbury, the son of the late Arthur L. and Lou (Chadbourne) Chase. He attended Craftsbury public schools, and graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1937. On June 10, 1941, he married Mary Emily Marckres in Albany. He and his family moved to Hardwick in 1946, where he has since made his home. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1944. He served his country in France, Germany, Italy, and Belgium. While in Germany his duties consisted of guarding World War II prisoners Rudolph Hess and Herman Gorhing for the U.S. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. He was employed in the granite industry in Barre for many years. He specialized in carving roses on monuments. He retired in 1981. He was affiliated with the United Church of Hardwick. He was a member of Caspian Lake Lodge No. 87 F & AM of Hardwick, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7779 of Hyde Park, and American Legion Post No. 7 of Hardwick. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Aleta Akerlind, and her husband, Jack, of Craftsbury; two sons, Arthur Chase and his wife, Alice, and Alton Chase and his wife, Melody, all of Hardwick; a brother, Linwood "Pete" Chase, and his wife, Rolinda "Dinny," of Irasburg; five grandchildren: Brenda Gravel of Wolcott, Denis Chase of Hardwick, Mary Akerlind of Johnson, Michael Akerlind of Fairfax, and Levi Chase of Hardwick; nine great-grandchildren; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 2001; and by three sisters: Veda, Edith, and Florence. Funeral services were held April 5 at the United Church of Hardwick. , 98, of Newport died in Newport on Wednesday, April 9, 2003. Mr. Spates was born on July 21, 1904, in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of William and Margaret Spates. He moved from Lynn in 1945 to establish Spates the Florist with his wife, Eleanor. They retired from the business in 1973. He was an active member and past president of the Newport Chamber of Commerce and past president and lifetime member of the Newport Kiwanis Club. He served on the Newport City Council from 1968 to 1971 and was elected as mayor of Newport in 1971, serving until 1974. In 1975 he was elected as a representative to the Vermont State Legislature and served there until 1981. He was an avid reader and a die-hard fisherman who was often found on the railroad bridge at the crack of dawn casting his line. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, in 1991, shortly after celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He leaves his children: Betty-Jane Durkee of Tequesta, Florida, Frank H. Spates Jr. and his wife, Jeannette, of Derby, Joyce Stanwood and her husband, Jay, of Newport, Bill Spates and his wife, Hilda, of Lynn, and Doug Spates and his wife, Vivian, of Newport; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his brother Arthur Spates. Funeral services were held April 12 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Mrs. Provost was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, on May 23, 1905, the daughter of Alderic Sr. and Rosanna (Savaria) Jacques. In 1945 she married Raymond Provost, who predeceased her in 1986. In her younger years she was a beautician in Burlington. She spent many happy years with her husband. While a resident at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Home for over 15 years, she enjoyed playing cards and bingo with fellow residents. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Alberta Jacques of Colebrook, New Hampshire, and Clarice Jacques of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 12 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church with the Reverend Roland Rivard officiating. Interment was in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 14.

, 78, of Plainville, Massachusetts, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at his residence surrounded by the love of his family. Mr. Mason was the husband of Elizabeth M. (Howe) Mason, to whom he was married on August 8, 1952. Born in Orleans on December 31, 1924, he was a son of the late Hale Mason Sr. and Delia (Snow) Mason. He resided in Plainville for the past ten years and had previously resided in Mansfield, Massachusetts, from 1962 to 1992 and in Foxboro, Massachusetts, prior to moving to Mansfield. He graduated from Orleans High School and was a 1952 graduate of Burdett College. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having entered the service on January 3, 1944, and was discharged on May 17, 1946, during the World War II era. He was employed as a production planner at the Foxboro Company for 36 years prior to his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Saint Alban's Masonic Lodge in Foxboro and the Foxboro Retirees Club. He was a ten-year member of the Hockomock Area YMCA in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. In addition to his wife of 50 years, he leaves two daughters, Linda Harding of North Attleboro and Carol Pray of Mansfield; two sons, Stuart Mason of Mansfield and Jeff Mason of North Attleboro; a sister, Joyce Krieg of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; a brother, Hale Mason of San Diego, California; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Phillip Mason. A Masonic ritual service led by the Saint Alban's Masonic Lodge, followed by a funeral service with the Reverend Katrina Clinton, pastor of the First Congregational Church of North Attleboro officiating was held April 10 at Dyer-Lake Funeral Home in North Attleboro. , 81, daughter of George Franklin Holland and Mildred Holland, died on January 11, 2003, in Alhambra, California. Mrs. Kezar moved to California five years ago to be with her daughter Carolyn Schmitt, her son-in-law Bill Schmitt, her two grandchildren, Michael and Kathleen, and her two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Nicholas. She was married to Red Colburn, who died at the age of 39 in 1959, and then was married to Lloyd Kezar for over 25 years. They spent winters in Florida. She is survived by her twin brother, Milt Holland, of California; and by two sisters, Marion Hall of Vermont and Louise James of Florida. She has touched the hearts of many, especially her surviving family in California. Just five months prior to her death, her only child, Carolyn Schmitt, died from cancer at the age of 54. , 74, of Morrisville died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Genesis Elder Care Center in Morrisville. Mrs. Hanson was born May 2, 1928, in Coventry, the daughter of the late Albian and Jennie (Philbrook) Tate. She attended Greensboro public schools and graduated in 1945. She married Earl Hanson in Greensboro in 1947. In her earlier years, she was employed as a telephone operator in Greensboro. She was a nurses' aide for many years at Greensboro Nursing Home and Central Vermont Hospital. She retired in the early 1990s. She was affiliated with Greensboro United Church of Christ. She enjoyed going to the beach, traveling, camping, crocheting, and knitting. Survivors include two sons, Herbert Hanson and his wife, Bonnie, of Woodbury and Herman Hanson and his wife, Kim, of Morrisville; a daughter, Jackie Hanson, of Hardwick; five grandchildren: Aaron Hanson of Woodbury, Tara Butler of Stowe, Mark Currier of Newport, and Tyler and Adam Hanson of Morrisville; two great-grandchildren, Zoe and Zachary Butler of Stowe; four sisters: Kathleen Van Sant and her husband, James, of Westmore, Genevieve Jewett of Greensboro, North Carolina, Gail Sousa and her husband, George, of East Albany, and Carlotta Tate of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Ann Currier; and by two sisters, Charlotte Tate and Joyce White. A memorial service was held on April 12 at Northern Vermont Funeral Home with the Reverend David Hunter officiating. Burial will be held later in the spring in the family lot in South Woodbury Cemetery. A graveside service will take place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating. , 75, of Glover died in Newport on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. Mrs. Thompson was born in Barton on April 3, 1928, the daughter of James and Stella (Doyle) McNamara. On March 1, 1946, she married Merrill Thompson, who survives her. After her husband's retirement 32 years ago, they moved to Glover. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing needlework. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughters Rebecca Twombly of New Haven, Connecticut, and Jacalyn Bennetta and her husband, Joseph, of Connecticut; by her mother, Stella Wilkie, of Barton; by her grandchildren: Chad Twombly, Judith Richardson, and Carolyn Murphy; by her great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Christopher Twombly and Taylor and Colton Murphy; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A graveside service took place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans on April 19 with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating. , 94, of Pleasant Valley, New York, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at home. Mrs. Sinon taught school in West Glover and East Albany from 1946 to 1957, and she taught at Beckman Road Elementary School and Traver Road Elementary School in New York from 1957 to 1974. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Pleasant Valley. Born in Lowell on March 4, 1909, she was the daughter of John and Mary Murphy Pudvah. She was a graduate of Barton Academy in 1927 and of Lyndon Normal School in 1929. She received her master's degree from New Paltz College in New York in 1966. She married Charles Sinon, who predeceased her in 1973. Survivors include a son, John Sinon of Pleasant Valley; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Carol Sinon of Meridan, Connecticut; daughters and sons-in-law: Barbara and Merle Crouse of Enfield, Connecticut, Shirley and John Curley of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Mary and Raymond Murray of Pleasant Valley; 14 grandchildren: John, James, Jeffrey, and Shirley Curley Monohon, Sheri Curley Supple, Jeffrey, Daniel, and Linda Crouse, Scott and Steven Sinon, Nancy, Charles, and Michael Murray, and Patti Sinon Beue; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Pudvah of Hardwick; brother-in-law John Sinon of East Albany; sisters-in-law Madelyn McRitchie and Shirley Sinon of Pleasant Valley and Lucille Sinon of Manchester, Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers: Harold, Steve, and Edward Pudvah; and by four sisters: Nellie Davignon, Chloe Bergeron, Rachel Bergeron, and Janette Morrill. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 23 at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York. , 75, of Newport died in Newport on Wednesday, April 16, 2003. Mrs. Mason was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 29, 1927, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Bonguard) Mason. She was a nanny in Philadelphia, a Sunday school teacher, and a child-care provider. Most recently she was a teacher at the Church of God in Derby. She enjoyed painting landscapes, doing crafts, and making jewelry. She also made puppets, dolls, and wooden toys. She was a member of the Church of God and Goodrich Memorial Library, where she gave puppet shows and provided story time sessions for children. She is survived by her children: Paul Moyer of Barton, Benjamin Moyer, Mark Moyer of Kathleen, Georgia, Daniel Moyer of Los Angeles, California, Rebekah Moyer of New Jersey, and Andrew Moyer of Derby; by 18 grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were April 18 at the Church of God in Derby with the Reverend Laurence Wall officiating. , 82, of Orange, Massachusetts, died Monday evening, April 7, 2003, at Athol Memorial Hospital in Athol, Massachusetts, following a short illness. Mrs. Knowlton was born in Athol on January 16, 1921, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Mabel (Foster) Noyes. She lived in the Athol-Orange area most of her life. She attended Orange schools. She worked for many years at the N.D. Cass Company of Athol and then at Athol Table Manufacturing Company. She was a very active member of North New Salem Congregational Church and was a Sunday school teacher there for the last 25 years. She also enjoyed crocheting, walking, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was very proud of her Native American ancestry and promoted many of the native customs during her lifetime. She leaves to mourn her death her only child, Lester A. Barrett of Albany; seven grandchildren: Brenda Brown of Greenfield, Massachusetts, Sharon Catrone of Upatio, Georgia, Rebecca Jarvis of Leverett, Massachusetts, Darlene Thomas of Great Britain, and Debra Teague, Jennifer Barrett, and Andre Barrett, all of Orange. She also leaves two brothers, Jerry Noyes of Athol and John Morton of Bedford, Massachusetts; two sisters, Geneva Parker and Shirley Clapp of Jaffrey, New Hampshire; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held at North New Salem Congregational Church in North New Salem, Massachusetts, with the Reverend Edward T. Boren officiating on April 10. A reception was held at the conclusion of the evening service at the fellowship hall of the church. Private burial of the ashes will be in Vermont at the convenience of the family. , 59, of Craftsbury died Friday, April 18, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Halden was born in St. Albans on June 2, 1943, the daughter of the late Alwin D. and Martha (Domey) Collins. On March 13, 1976, in Litchfield, Connecticut, she married Frank N. Halden, who survives her. She was a 1961 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and a member of Hardwick American Legion Post No. 7 Auxiliary. She was employed by Montgomery Ward for years. She managed her own home sewing and quilting shop, and most recently she worked for several years as a cashier for Price Chopper in Morrisville. Her joys in life were spending time with her grandchildren, being out in the garden, canning the harvests with her husband, sewing, growing flowers, reading many a book, wallpapering many a room, gathering with family, and sharing the bounties of life. Besides her husband, Frank, of Craftsbury, she is survived by her children: Amy Christiansen and her husband, Fletcher, of Morrisville, David Bitler and his wife, Angela, of Danville, Andrea Downes and her husband, Timothy, of Falls Village, Connecticut, Tracy Ouellette and her husband, Stephen, of Bennington, New Hampshire, and Samantha Morin and her husband, Brian, of Redmond, Washington; by a sister, Penelope Whalen, and her husband, Robert, of Bloomfield, Connecticut; by two brothers, Frederick Collins and his wife, Carol, of Moretown and Eric Collins and his wife, Kim, of Richford; by a brother-in-law, Robert Halden, and his wife, Shoshana, of Erwin, Pennsylvania; by a sister-in-law, Evelyn Ayllon, of Flushing, New York; by 13 grandchildren; and by her beloved dog, Jynx. She was predeceased by her parents; and by an infant son, Darrell Bitler, in 1962. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at 2 p.m., in the Heald Funeral Chapel in St. Albans with the Reverend Ben Thurber officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery in St Albans. There will be no visiting hours.
