, 91, a longtime resident of Tilden House in Barre, died January 3, 2003, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Mrs. Rioux was born October 17, 1911, in Aguero, Province of Santander, Spain, the daughter of Abilio and Luisa (Bedia) Amor. She came to Barre September 8, 1915, with her mother and sister to join her father. She attended school in Barre. She married Albert Rioux on June 4, 1938, in Barre. He died October 11, 1960. She worked at Sprague Electric Company in Barre for many years. She retired in 1975. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, entertaining in her home, visiting friends at area nursing homes, and traveling. She was a communicant of St. Monica Church and its Court St. Monica, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Ladies of Ste. Anne, the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, and the Charismatic Prayer Group. She was also a member of the Third Order of St. Benedict, the Barre and Montpelier Senior Citizens, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the National Council of Senior Citizens. She had been a summer resident of Morgan. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Frascoia of Barre Town and Claire Daggett of Derby; two sisters, Esperanza Warnke of Hartford, Connecticut, and Ana Cumming of Barre; two brothers, Abilio "Bill" Amor of Barre and Raymond Amor of Frederick, Maryland; five grandchildren: Paul Frascoia of Burlington, Eric Daggett of Derby, Michaeline Daggett of Derby, Alan Frascoia of Barre, and Renee Collier of Westfield, Massachusetts; and two great-grandsons, Gunnar and Zane Collier of Westfield, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by three sisters: Petra Caloagni, Louisa Pruicelli, and Anita Bailey; and by a grandson, Jeffrey Daggett. A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 7 at St. Monica Church in Barre. Burial will be at a later date at St. Monica Cemetery in Barre. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffrey B. , 94, of Derby died in Derby on January 5, 2003. Mrs. Lowenstein was born in Macomb, Illinois, on September 6, 1908, the daughter of Frank S. and Sarah Moon. She graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb and did her graduate work at the University of Illinois. She taught English at Whitehall High School in Whitehall, Illinois. She was a member of the United Church of Derby. On June 10, 1934, she married Edwin F. Lowenstein, esquire, of Whitehall. He predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Trinket Amaliksen and her husband, Arne S., of Derby; by her grandchildren: Robin Burnham and her husband, David, of North Yarmouth, Maine, Sonja Straton and her husband, Jeff, of Center Valley, Pennsylvania, and Erik Amaliksen of Essex; by her great-grandchildren: Aubrey and Macy Straton of Center Valley, Pennsylvania, Alex, Charles, and Ryan Burnham of North Yarmouth, Maine, and Seth and Ian Amaliksen of Essex; by her sister Dorothy Trotter of Quincy, Illinois; and by her brothers John and Howard Moon of Macomb. She was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Lee Lowenstein on September 12, 1950, at age four; and by her brothers and sisters: Lewis, Norris, and Francis Moon, Garnet Burnham, Mildred Corzine, and Margaret Eyman. , 45, died peacefully on January 6, 2003, at Vermont Respite House in Williston after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Ms. LeBlanc was born August 26, 1957, in Newport to Valerien and Therese (St. Amand) LeBlanc. Classmates and friends at Lake Region Union High School in Orleans and Castleton State College will fondly remember her natural athletic ability, her leadership qualities, her sense of humor, and her high regard for fellow teammates and coaches. She was recognized nationally by being named an outstanding high school athlete in Sports Illustrated. She was also a member of the U.S. National Field Hockey team. Her love of sports and the outdoors was evident throughout her life. She enjoyed playing softball on various teams and fly fishing in Maine with flies she had tied herself. In 1978 she and Gerry Cahill were the first women to kayak the Noatak River in Alaska. While in college, she worked in Lamarre's Saw Mill as the state's only woman sawyer. After graduating from Castleton State College with a degree in social work, she worked 15 years as a social worker in Newport and as the assistant director of mental health services in St. Albans. It gave her great pleasure to help families in need. In 1995 she joined her life and business partner, Louise Evans, as co-owner in their college financial planning business at Green Mountain Associates for College Planning in Burlington. She was delighted to be able to help many Vermont families save money on their children's college education. As well as helping others, she loved to make collections of music for family and friends, watch and discuss professional sports, read her newspapers, watch the news, visit with her family and watch her nieces and nephews grow up, and spend time with her beloved dogs and cats. Family and friends will always have her in their hearts and be forever inspired by her successful pursuit of excellence, her honesty, her compassion and thoughtfulness, her love and appreciation of nature and animals, her wonderful generous spirit, and her unique gift of always making the person she was with feel so important and cherished. She is survived by her partner of 23 years and civil union spouse, Louise Evans; by her mother, Therese LeBlanc, of Newport; by her sister Suzanne Johnson and brother-in-law Kevin Johnson and their children Brendan and Cullen of Colchester; by her sister Irene LeBlanc and son JorDani from Colchester; by her sister Annette LeBlanc from Nashua, New Hampshire; by her sister Mariette Rice and brother-in-law Ronald Rice and their children Jesse, Ronnell, and Brady from Essex Center; and by her brother Daniel LeBlanc and sister-in-law Cecile and their daughter Arielle from Rutland. She also leaves her special father-in-law, Richard Evans and Beth Kemske of Newark, Delaware; Richard and Laura Evans and their daughter Liz from Santa Monica, California; Michael Evans and Anne Cameron and her children Jenna and Josh from South Burlington; Martha and Rick Miller and their sons Jordan and Joseph from Malvem, Pennsylvania, and Peter Evans and his son Joshua, Tom Evans, and Jim Evans, all from Glover. She was predeceased by her father, Valerien LeBlanc; and by her special mother-in-law, Ruth J. Evans. She will be sadly missed but forever appreciated by her dogs Snuffy, Simba, Maite, Hillary, and Esperanza and her cats Minou, Boulc de Neige, and Mr. Kitty. , 90, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at home following a long illness, with her daughter at her side and surrounded by other loving family members, including her granddaughter Karin, grandsons Kurt and Casey, and her son-in-law Neil, at the hour of her death. Mrs. Hemenway was born October 27, 1912, in Orleans, the daughter of the late Wallace and Clementine Akley Allen. She was educated in Orleans and was a graduate of Orleans High School. Her life was dedicated to raising her children. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, and while living in Lewiston, Maine, with her son Gary for 20 years, she volunteered many hours with her church community in fund-raising programs and shared her gift of cooking at the annual lobster luncheons. She enjoyed sewing in her spare time, watching basketball and the NBA's Utah Jazz, but her greatest pleasure was producing birthday cakes and special pies for her grandchildren. She loved to travel abroad, especially enjoying visits to London, England. She was an avid reader, sharing her avocation by donating her large-print edition books to local libraries. Above all else she was always the most enthusiastic supporter of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, encouraging their individual life endeavors. Her family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to Pam Wood, Barb Ailes, and Irene Martinez for their love and support and kind and compassionate care offered and given in full measure. She is survived by her daughter with whom she has lived with for the past four years, Norma Pollard, and her husband, Neil, of Essex Center; by four sons: Allen E. Hemenway and his wife, Sue, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Jon Hemenway and his wife, Lois, of North Scituate, Massachusetts, Gary Hemenway and his wife, Elaine, of Lewiston, and Geoffrey Hemenway and his wife, Debra, of Charlotte, North Carolina; by one sister, Myrtle Walcott, of Essex Center; by 14 grandchildren; by 25 great-grandchildren; by one great-great-grandson; by a brother-in-law, Irving Carpenter, of Whitefield, New Hampshire; by a brother and sister-in-law, Fern and Shirley Hemenway, of Orleans; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service celebrating her life was held in Essex Center United Methodist Church with the Reverend Greg Smith officiating on January 11. , 74, died January 2, 2003, in Burlington. Mrs. Hatch was the daughter of Frank and Alice Welch of Island Pond. She was born in Norton on June 8, 1928. She graduated from Brighton High School in 1946. She attended Montpelier Junior College and Lyndon Teachers College, graduating in 1950. She played piano in the school band. She then taught school for a few years in Arlington before joining the Air Force in 1954. She married Donald Burns July 3, 1961. He predeceased her. They had one daughter, Lorena Bortz, of Burlington. Survivors include her brother Gordon Welch of Rutland; her daughter; and three nieces and nephews. She lived for many years in Island Pond with her mother and daughter, where she ran the Head Start program. She married John Hatch on March 11, 1981, living in Melbourne, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona. She had been in ill health for the past year.

, 80, of Morrisville died after an extended illness at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. Mrs. Roberts was born in Irasburg on February 23, 1922, the daughter of the late Levi and Eltheda Dean. A graduate of Orleans High School, she was a bookkeeper at Lakeside Garage in Morrisville for 26 years, until her retirement. Her family and friends will miss her gentle, loving nature, her warm sense of humor, and her sunny smile. She was dearly loved. She leaves her husband of 60 years, Darcy A. Roberts; her son Keenan and his wife, Patti, of Eagle River, Wisconsin; her daughter Sharon Palmer and her husband, Robert, of Lakeland, Florida; four grandchildren: Jennifer McCarthy and her husband, Edward, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Kathryn Harfouche and her husband, Marc, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Tracy Roberts of Boca Raton, Florida, and Kimberlee Frey and her husband, Jim, of Pompano Beach, Florida; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Boulanger, and her husband, Raymond, of Orleans; a brother, Elwin Dean, and his wife, Pat, of Derby Line; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Lyle, Merton, and Ray Dean. A memorial gathering to honor her will be held this summer and to be announced at the time by her family. , 78, of Glover died in St. Johnsbury on Friday, January 17, 2003. Mr. Perron was born in St. Paul de Chester, Quebec, on August 16, 1924, the son of Ernest and Maria (Gagnon) Perron. He moved to Glover with the family in 1924 and has always worked on the family farm. He loved music and liked to play the harmonica. He also had a special love for animals. He is survived by his brothers: Leo Perron of Newport, Louis Perron of St. Louis, Missouri, Nelson Perron of Mesa, Arizona, Eddie Perron of Glover, Walter Perron of East Haven, Connecticut, and Richard Perron of Glover; by his sisters: Jean Yester of Branford, Connecticut, Rita Haag of Grand Junction, Colorado, Martha Alexander of Glover, Estelle Parmeter of Leominster, Massachusetts, Yolande Chamberlain of St. Johnsbury, and Cecile Davignon of West Lebanon, New Hampshire; by his special nieces and nephews who he lived with for 23 years, Nelson Ernest Perron, Phillip Charles Perron, and Monique Anita Perron; and by numerous other nieces and nephews. , 47, of Barton died early Saturday morning, January 18, 2003, following a long illness. She died surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Boutin was born in Newport on July 6, 1955, the daughter of Andre and Theresa (Bellia) LaMadeleine. Years ago she helped on the family farm by milking her favorite cows. Her other interests were playing bingo, collecting Beanie Babies, and selling Avon. She loved her two grandchildren and enjoyed people. She had several jobs, but most recently was the bookkeeper at Taylor's Automotive in Barton. On July 14, 1973, she married Raymond Boutin, who survives her. She is also survived by two children, Tammy Royer and her husband, Richard Jr., of Irasburg and Raymond Boutin Jr. of Barton and his girlfriend, Alyssa Bennett, of Irasburg; by two grandchildren, Alyssa and Joshua Royer of Irasburg; by sisters: Edna Coffin and her husband, Kevin, of Newport, Andrea Cushman and her husband, Seth, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Fay Wright and her husband, Shawn, of Craftsbury, and Vivian Merrill and her boyfriend of Swanton; by five nieces and nephews: Kevin and Sarah Coffin, Chelsea Merrill, and Emily and Logan Cushman; and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. , 50, of Derby, died in Burlington on Friday, January 17, 2003, and joined her daughter, Laura, who died in 1995. Mrs. Ballou was the beloved wife of Tom Ballou and beloved mother of Shawn Lowell. She was born in Burlington on January 13, 1953, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Peeters) Spear. She was manager at Ames Department Store for many years; no matter how sweet the child or how nasty the customer, she always greeted everyone with her wonderful smile. During her years at Ames, she received many awards and accolades as the lead trainer for 15 stores and her work with area civic groups such as Warm the Children. When Ames closed on November 9, 2002, she went to work at Union House Nursing Home in Glover until her illness forced to her to stop on December 19. She loved reading, children, sitting on the beach, and boating. She will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes and radiant smile. She was a former member of American Legion Auxiliary Brighton Post No. 80. On August 17, 2002, she married Tom Ballou, who survives her. She is also survived by her son Shawn Lowell of Colchester; by her stepchildren: Kristi Ballou of White River, Tom Ballou and his wife, Anna, of White River, and Laure Day and her husband, David, of Rockport, Maine; by her brothers: Paul Spear of Burlington, Joey Spear of Florida, and Donny Spear of Florida; by her sister Shirley Tremblay of Florida; by two grandchildren; by her niece Karen Racine of Florida; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Dorothy Spears. , 90, of East Craftsbury, who spent most of her adult life in Baltimore, Maryland, and Delray Beach, Florida, died January 14, 2003. Her sons Marc of Charlestown, Massachusetts, and Jules of Albany were by her side. Born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 7, 1912, she was the only daughter of Julius and Fanny (Lilienstern) Rothchild, and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She obtained a bachelor of arts from Washington University and studied for a master's in social work from the University of Chicago. She moved to Baltimore, where she met and married the late Morris B. Older, a certified public accountant from New Haven, Connecticut. Their romance lasted almost 60 years. In Baltimore she worked for Jewish Family Services, evaluating and helping children and families before and after adoptions. After retiring to Florida, she continued her social contributions by counseling the recently bereaved members of her community and teaching English to Haitian immigrants. She moved to Craftsbury Community Care Center a year ago April and has lived there ever since. A memorial service, conducted by the Reverend Brendan Hadash and attended by residents, staff, and friends, was held at the center. She is survived by two sons and their families, Jules and Effin Older and Marc and Dora Older; by her grandchildren: Willow Older, Leroy Hasen, and Amber, Malka, and Daniel Older; and by her great-grandson Max Hasen.

, 90, of Derby died in Newport on Saturday, January 25, 2003. Mrs. Rossier was born in Newport Center on December 19, 1912, the daughter of Richard and Eliza (Ruiter) Norris. She worked as a seamstress for Warner Brothers in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She enjoyed bowling in her younger years and knitting. She was married to Robert Rossier, who predeceased her. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Smith of Derby and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Kenneth Norris and Joseph Norris; and by her sisters: Eva Fox, Madge Drown, Ardis Wilcox, and Beth Pettengill. Mr. Green was born on December 6, 1943, in Newport, the son of the late Earl and Cora (Trucotte) Green. On May 14, 1966, he married Mary Driver, who survives him. He worked for the town of Charleston for over 20 years. He enjoyed working outdoors on heavy equipment, working in the woods, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. , 71, of Derby Line died at her home on Saturday, January 25, 2003. Mrs. Donovan was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on March 26, 1931, the daughter of Earl and Ola (Marotte) Morris. On March 28, 1958, she married William Donovan, who survives her. The Donovans came from Connecticut to Glover in 1968 and moved to Derby Line in 1974. She enjoyed her grandchildren's participation in sports, including soccer, car racing, softball, and baseball. She loved to garden and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels around the house. She and her husband liked to go motorcycle riding over the many years. They also went on several trips with Community Circle, of which she was a member. She also derived great pleasure in her ancestry, dating from the Revolutionary War period. There is a Morris Museum in Morris Cove, which is a part of New Haven, Connecticut. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter Kelly Donovan and her friend, Gerald Letourneau, of Holland; by her grandchildren Shawn Sicard of Lyndonville and Jodie Sicard of Beebe Plain; by her brothers Earl Morris and his wife, Alice, of Bullhead City, Arizona, and Robert Morris of Eagar, Arizona; and by her sisters: Carol Firth and her husband, George, of East Haven, Connecticut, Winifred Carter of Medusa, New York, and June Hansen and her husband, Henry, of Phoenix, Arizona. She was predeceased by her sister Pam Martineau. A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced at the time. , 70, of Barton died in Newport on Saturday, January 25, 2003. Mr. Coburn was born in Harvey Station, New Brunswick, on March 24, 1932, the son of John P. and Jessie (Wood) Coburn. He worked as a supervisor in the packing department at Ethan Allen, then owned and operated Barton Cleaners for 20 years until his illness. He enjoyed traveling, especially to his hometown in New Brunswick. On January 14, 1989, he married Rachel Diette, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Donald Coburn and his wife, Joyce, of Orleans, Doug Coburn and his wife, Pat, of Warner, New Hampshire, Dolores Stoddard and her husband, Rick, of Orleans, and Diana Reed of Orleans; by his stepchildren: Valerie Young and her husband, Leon, of Barton, Laurie Poirier and her husband, Alan, of Brownington, Scott Valley of Swanton, and Marybeth Brochu and her husband, Michael, of Hardwick; by his brother Foster Coburn and his wife, Theresa, of Newport; by 14 grandchildren; and by seven great-grandchildren. John Monette

, 89, of Newport died Tuesday night, January 21, 2003, in Newport. Mr. Monette was born Jean Albert Monet on October 25, 1913, in Verdun, Quebec, one of 14 children born to Gidéon L. and Alexina (Berthiaume) Monette. In September 1916, the family moved to a farm on Vance Hill in Newport Town. He attended Sacred Heart School in Newport but was taken out of school to work at home due to several major catastrophes, including the loss of house and barns on two separate occasions from lightning strikes and a third time from the loss of a barn in a wind storm. In the reconstruction process he learned much about the building trades, which he later turned into a hobby. Although not yet an American citizen, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1941 and assigned to the motor pool at the Army War College in Washington, D.C. In July 1943 he shipped overseas to the China Burma India Theatre. Mostly he was on Ledo Road and Burma Road carrying supplies to the Chinese Army. He was discharged in October 1945 and returned to Newport where he entered the employ of Canadian Pacific Railway. Approximately ten years of his railway career were spent in passenger service on the Montréal to Boston trains. He was forced into early retirement by heart attacks. He was a member of the Green Mountain Basha of the China Burma India Veterans Association, American Legion Newport Post No. 21, Veterans of Foreign Wars Alfred Pepin Post No. 798, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a 50-year life member of the Newport Elks, where he helped and worked on just about every committee at the lodge. He will be sorely missed by his coffee-drinking friends at Hoagie's and Wendy's. On October 24, 1949, he married Doris Barbin in Newport. In 1953 they built their home on Colburn Street, where they had since resided. He is survived by his wife, Doris; by their sons: John and his wife, Janet (Hussey), and their daughter Megan of Derby, Gerard and his wife, Denise (Quenville), and their daughters Danielle and Michelle of Colchester, Paul of Newport, and Roger and his partner, Jonathan Welch, of Burlington; by his brother Paul Monet of Ottawa, Ontario; by his sisters Carmen Brassard of Ville de Anjou, Quebec, and Jeannette Monette of Columbus, Ohio; by his sister-in-law Irene Boivin Monette of Morrisville; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers; by two sisters; and by four siblings in infancy. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport. The family requests that memorial donations be directed to Goodrich Memorial Library, Building Fund, 202 Main Street, Newport, Vermont 05855.

, beloved infant son of Teri Prue and Jake Broussard, died on Thursday, January 23, 2003. , 80, of Alhambra, California, and formerly of Stanstead, Quebec, died in Alhambra on Saturday, January 11, 2003. Mrs. Kezar is survived by her twin, Milton Holland, of Monrovia, California; by her sisters Marion Hall of Newport and Lois James of Venice, Florida; by two grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Kezar; by her daughter Carolyn Schmitt; and by her brothers: Stanley, Norman, and Francis Holland. A graveside service will take place in the spring at Derby Line Cemetery.

, 73, of Newark died in St. Johnsbury on Friday, January 24, 2003. Mr. Cross was born in Holland on September 15, 1929, the son of Alfred and Blanche (Whiting) Cross. He worked at a variety of jobs, including the railroad in Island Pond. He farmed in Newark, and did construction, logging, and trucking. He also owned and operated his own business repairing chainsaws, lawnmowers, and snowmobiles in Newark. After his retirement, he enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. On June 22, 1951, he married Joyce Maxwell, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Claudia Giguere and her husband, Michael, of Newark, Cindy Shook and her husband, Charles, of Meridan, Connecticut, Veronica Olcott and her husband, Gary, of East St. Johnsbury, David Cross and his wife, Patty, of Newark, Joyce Ashman and her husband, Larry, of Morgan, and Melody Austin and her friend, Rock Ovitt, of Island Pond; by his grandchildren: Penny and Rick Bessom, Gary Olcott Jr., Shane and Christine Giguere, Shannon and Todd Ruggles, Ryan Giguere and his girlfriend, Tiffany, Shanda Cross, Shannon Bell, Hilary Cross, Damian Martin, Larry Ashman Jr., Lilly Jones, James and Tonya Ashman, Jennifer and Randy Hooker, Charles Austin, and Joy Walker; by his great-grandchildren: Gillian, Brianna, Cameron, Alyssa, Bryant, and Aaliyah; by his sisters: Marilyn Styles and her husband, Dave, of Morgan, Carolyn Smith of Groveton, New Hampshire, and Patricia Tillotson and her husband, Dean, of Palm Bay, Florida; by his half-brother Alfred Cross and his wife, Carole, of Newark; by his stepmother, Evelyn Cross, of Newark; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law. He was predeceased by his son William Cross, his brother Michael Cross and by his granddaughter Michelle Olcott. Funeral services were held on January 28 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating.
