, 86, died peacefully on Christmas Eve at North Country Hospital in Newport. Born on February 9, 1916, in Holland, Vermont, Mr. Wheeler was among 21 children of Hollis and Gertrude (Farr) Wheeler. He graduated from Derby Academy in 1935 and shortly thereafter began work at Union Twist Drill, Butterfield Division, in Derby Line. He married the light and love of his life, Viola (Lola) Currier, on June 12, 1941. World War II, however, soon interrupted both his new role as dad to two sons, as well as his 40-year stint as a machinist with Butterfields. Responding to the needs of his country, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served as a member of the occupying forces in the Pacific arena, following the dropping of the two atomic bombs. Returning to the Northeast Kingdom, he resumed his life with Lola, Bill, and Jim - and eventually, Randy and Margie. Ever the outdoorsman, he could often be found hunting or fishing in his spare time, and for many years he taught hunter safety courses for the Derby Fish and Game Club. Moving out to camp on Lake Seymour in Morgan for the summer was something he eagerly anticipated each year. Long before community service was a popular phrase, he was involved in a variety of community projects. He donated countless hours to the Derby Line Fire Department and ambulance squad, numerous hours of instruction to hundreds of Boy Scouts, and more than 20 gallons of his blood for use by the American Red Cross. In addition to helping his fellow human beings through his work with the fire department, Boy Scouts, and Red Cross, he also enjoyed helping spread joy, happiness, and a bit of laughter by bringing music and even the occasional joke or tall tale to family, friends, and neighbors at home and in local nursing homes. No one will forget the twinkle in his eye nor the barely suppressed chuckle as he reached the punch line of each story. While not a formally trained musician, he played a mean guitar and a mellow banjo, accompanying both with a pleasant and hearty baritone voice. The Meridians, a Canada-U.S. men's chorus, was also fortunate to have the benefit of that voice. With the advent of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he continued to cherish family life as well as his love of the out-of-doors. Many a child has learned to surprise rock-hidden crawfish and bait a hook with his patient teaching and advice. At the age of 70 he ventured into the wilds of Alaska, accompanying his two elder sons on a hunting trip where it was suggested that no one ever leave the campsite without benefit of a firearm - even for nature's call! During the past few years he devoted his time to caring for Lola, ensuring that she felt loved, safe, and secure in her own home - truly the passion of his life. He is survived by two sisters, Doris LeClair of Richfield, Connecticut, and Vivian Geoffroy of Albany; by his wife, Viola Currier Wheeler, who is residing at Newport Health Care Center and would appreciate a visit from one and all; by his four children and their children: William and Bonnie Wheeler of Derby Line, their daughter Kristi Wheeler Barry and her husband, Craig, James and Joan Wheeler of Greensboro Bend and their children: Thomas and his wife, Kim, Tracy, Nancy Doyon Wheeler, and Devon Ross, Randolph and Victoria Wheeler of Colchester and their children Kathleen and Christopher, and Margie Wheeler Sisco and her husband, David, of Williston and their children: Brian, Daniel, and Laura; and by eight great-grandchildren: Madison Barry, Alicia and Erika Wheeler, Ashley, Christopher, and Kylie Bowman, Cassidy Doyon, and Kadin Ross. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, Vermont 05855; or Frontier Animal Society of Vermont, 502 Strawberry Acres Road, Newport, Vermont 05855.
