He first became a registered EMT, advanced EMT, and then paramedic before graduating as a registered nurse in 1980 from Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. Jim worked as a staff nurse at NVRH and Cottage Hospital before continuing his medical studies at Albany Medical College where he graduated with a master's of science in nurse anesthesiology. As a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), Jim worked at Androscoggin Valley Hospital, Berlin, N.H., and then branched out doing Locum Tenens Anesthesia at various hospitals in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Missouri. Besides anesthesia for pain management, Jim was interested in the use of therapeutic massage. He graduated from Stillpoint Center for Healing Arts with a certificate of massage therapy for licensed health professionals. He continued his massage training and qualified for a New Hampshire massage therapist license. Jim also helped his colleagues and friends in their pursuit of personal fitness and weight management. Jim married his square and round dance partner, Barbara Tirrell, June 14, 1974, in a square dance wedding. They began dancing and teaching round dances together in 1970. Jim attended callers school and often called square dances for non-dancers at church, Girl Scout, school and community functions. Square and round dancing have been a large part of their married life. As members of the Northern New Jersey Round Dance Leaders Council, they taught round dancing while they both were attending college in New Jersey. They have taught classes in Maine, New Hampshire and most recently in Vermont. They have been chairmen of the Vermont Association of Round Dance Leaders, committee chair of the Youth in Round Dancing Program for ROUNDALAB: International Association of Round Dance Leaders, editor for eight and a half years of the ROUNDALAB JOURNAL, members of the ROUNDALAB board of directors, members of the New England Council of Round Dance Teachers Association, life members of the Square Dance Foundation of New England, members of the National Square Dance Campers Association (NSDCA), and editors of the NSDCA Times for the past six years. For the past 15 summers, they have combined their vacation with teaching and cueing at the National Square Dance Convention, the Canadian Biennial National Square Dance Convention (biennial), and the International Square Dance Campers Camporee. These three functions move to different cities around the United States and Canada. Square and round dancing is a family activity with Barbara's parents, son Paul and daughter Crystal also cueing. All members of the family enjoy square dancing combined with camping. They camp with MontShire Campin' Squares, Twirling Sams also known as Twirling Campers and Garden State Campers. Jim enjoyed various activities with his family. As an assistant Scoutmaster for St. Johnsbury Troop 707, Jim attended as many functions as his traveling job would allow. Jim increased his leadership skills by earning the Boy Scout Wood Badge. He also assisted with his daughter's Waterford Girl Scout Troop 260. Jim also enjoyed leather work, target shooting (life member of NRA), needlework, sewing, computer technology and reading. Jim's strong faith in Jesus Christ was shown in the way he tried to help others through the use of his many talents. Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara, their three children, Joshua, Paul and Crystal, and Barbara's parents, whom he considered his parents also, Doc (Robert) and Peg Tirrell, all of Waterford; Barbara's brother and family, Scott and Debra Tirrell and Ryan Tirrell of San Bernadino, Calif., and Jeffrey and Hollie Tirrell of San Diego, Calif.; and Barbara's sister and husband, Gail and Christopher Vaucher of Las Cruces, N.M.
