, 84, of Lunenburg, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster after receiving constant care at home from her only daughter Barbara, due to her failing health. She was born in Lunenburg, March 20, 1919, the daughter of Frank E. and Agnes A. (Kenney) Lewis. She attended grammar school in Lunenburg and was a graduate of Lancaster Academy, Class of 1937. As a young girl she began piano lessons and played at various town functions in her young adulthood. She married Jack Q. Willson in August 1940 and became bookkeeper to his flourishing logging business that was started upon his return from the military. Helen also took joy in spending her summers at the family camp on Neal Pond, where she enjoyed swimming, boating and barbecues. However, her happiest moments were spent at home with her family. She was a devoted mother and wife. She also loved animals, especially dogs, and delighted in the company of her Jack Russell terrier, Rusty. Survivors include a son, Robert J. Willson and wife Andrea of St. Johnsbury; a daughter, Barbara A. Willson of Lunenburg; a brother, Kenneth L. Lewis and wife Arlene of Lunenburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Jack Q. Willson, and an older sister, Phyllis, who died in infancy. Funeral services and graveside committal will be private and held at the convenience of the family. , 99, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at her home, Wednesday, July 30, 2003. She was born in East Orange, Vt., July 27, 1904, the daughter of Charlie M. and Katie (Tillotson) Colby. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre and Lovell Commercial College in New Hampshire. Helen was a member of the Rebekahs Olive Branch 4 and Grace United Methodist Church. She married Andrew Watson Oct. 18, 1930 and they made their home in St. Johnsbury. She was predeceased by her husband and a daughter, Jean; two brothers, Edson and Dwight Colby; and a sister, Bertha Abbiati. She is survived by two nephews, James W. Colby of Falls Church, Va., and Irwin Watson of Sherbrook, Quebec; three nieces, Jean Jantz of Vista, Calif., Phoebe Dupont of Middlesex, Vt., and Marion Saxby of Lake Elmore, Vt.; and special neighbors Midge Whitcomb and Jack Wallstrom. There will be no services and burial will be private at a later date at the Grove Cemetery in East St. Johnsbury. , 94, of Waterford, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 22, 1909, in Enosburg, Vt., the daughter of Morton and Sadie Haselton. She married Clarence H. Young, Aug. 11, 1929. Mary was a member of the Lower Waterford Congregational Church, a member of the Waterford Ladies Circle, and had spent years researching and compiling information about her genealogy. She was a very loving person, a very precious grandmother, great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Clarence H. Young of Waterford; a granddaughter, Melody and husband Jeffrey Peterson of Concord, Vt.; a grandson, Jeffery and wife Erma of Dalton, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Marty Bradley of Concord, Vt., Frank Bradley Jr. of Ocala, Fla., Ryan and Remington Peterson of Concord, Vt., Allen, Avery and Aden Young of Dalton, N.H.; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Bradley of Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Arthur and Robert Haselton of Essex; and a sister, Ida May Gravelle of Jericho. She was predeceased by her only son, Lee A. Young of Waterford, March 13, 2003; two grandsons, Bruce and Rodger Young, June 12, 1966, at the ages of 16 and 15; and eight brothers and sisters, Latham, Lee, Donald, Bernard, Helen, Florence, Gertrude and Dorothy. , 80, of Rooney Road, Dalton, died Saturday Aug. 2, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Phillips was born in Whitefield, May 15, 1923, the daughter of Raymond and Grace Rooney. A longtime resident of the North Country, Dorothy worked at area mills including Gilman Paper Company and the Northumberland Mill. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens and was a true animal lover, especially her dogs. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Family members include her son, Daniel Emerson of Dalton; one great-granddaughter; and two great-great-grandsons. She was predeceased by her first husband, Everett Emerson, in 1977; her second husband, Warren Phillips, in 1983; and two sons, Raymond Emerson and Charlie Emerson. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday afternoon and evening, Aug. 5, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. , 64, of Glover, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at his home in Glover. He was born Oct. 9, 1938 in Glover, a son of Arthur and Laura (Still) Neil. Mr. Neil was a truck driver for Pike Industries, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran with the U.S. Marines. Mr. Neil enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, and visiting with his grandchildren. He is survived by his fiancee, Karleen Lanoue of Glover, two children, Robert Neil and wife Janet of Derby, Conn., and Darlene Neil of Derby, Conn.; two step-children, Amy Braun and husband Bill of Glover, and Andre R. Lanoue of Orleans; two step-grandchildren, Ivan A. Lanoue and India L. Braun; a brother and two sisters, Raymond Sweeney Sr. and wife Donna of Glover, Shirley Stone and husband Arland of Glover, and Beverly Cleveland of Newport; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Sweeney and Donald Neil; and his step-father, Charles Sweeney. , 94, of Sugar Hill, N.H., passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mary Phyllis was born to Philip C. and Marguerite Williams Brown of Dover, N.H., July 20, 1910. She attended school at Dana Hall and Vassar College, graduating in 1932. Being a person interested in humanity and service, she found neither secretarial work nor social service completely satisfying and went on to graduate from Tufts Medical School in 1949 at the age of 39, a remarkable feat of which she was justly proud. She married Lloyd Wentworth while in medical school. They built a camp on Alton Bay together, and it was one of Mary Phyllis' favorite places. Lloyd died in 1955 of multiple sclerosis. Mary Phyllis married Lucius P. Davis, a longtime friend, in 1975 and lived for the rest of her life in Sugar Hill. She was active and interested in many organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Medical Women's Association, the Littleton Regional Hospital, Hospice, the Garden Club, the Willing Workers and the Littleton Public Library. She was also an avid bridge player. She was predeceased by her husband Lucius in 1992. She is survived by one brother, Frank B.W. Brown of Middleton, Mass.; and one sister, Frances Allen-Hall of South Hadley, Mass. A memorial service will be held at the Sugar Hill Meeting House on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 12:30 p.m.

, 66, of St. Johnsbury, died Monday morning, Aug. 4, 2003, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. She had resided there for the past seven years. She was born June 2, 1937, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., the daughter of George and Lillian (Flood) Brierley. Her father predeceased her in October 2000. She is survived by her husband, Fred Ducker of St. Johnsbury; her mother, Mrs. Lillian Brierley of St. Johnsbury; a daughter, Shannon Budziak and husband Tim of Albany, Vt.; a son, Sean Ducker and wife Brenda of Lyndon; two children by a previous marriage, Richard Hoy and Margaret Packard, both of California; a brother, George Brierley Jr. and wife Shirley of St. Johnsbury; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, with the Rev. Patrick Forman celebrant. Burial will be later in the day at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph. , 88, died early Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, just past midnight, at his home in Danville. He was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Portland, Maine, the son of Lewis E. Springer and Adelaide (Poole) Springer. He moved to Windsor, Vt., July 1, 1923, and graduated from Windsor High School and Northeastern University with a bachelor of arts degree. He received his LLB degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1941. He was then admitted to the Vermont bar. He was elected to the position of Windsor County State's Attorney from 1950-1954. He was then elected to the Vermont Legislature as a Windsor County Senator and served from 1955-1957. He became chief legal council for Vermont Department of Highways for several years. He was appointed chief legal council for the Legislature and served for several years. He received an appointment as the District Court judge for Caledonia, Orleans and Essex counties in April 1968. During his service on the judiciary he was honored to serve on the national committee working to establish uniform sentencing guidelines. After his retirement in 1983, he served on special assignments to District, Superior and Vermont Supreme courts for several years. Judge Springer was a longtime member and past secretary of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, with many years of perfect attendance. He was also a triple Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He was a life member and past exalted ruler of the Hartford Chapter of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1541 and was the longest serving member, of approximately 64 years. He served on the board of directors of YMCA Camp Billings in Fairlee, Vt. Judge Springer served in the local community with the Northeast Kingdom Chapter of the American Red Cross for many years. He was an honorary member of the Vermont Sheriff's Association. As a teenager, Judge Springer earned his Eagle Scout badge. He continued his affiliation with the Boy Scouts throughout his life. He was district chairman of the Northeast Kingdom Chapter of the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In addition, he served on the executive board of the Green Mountain Council and had served in the capacity of finance chairman for the council. The extent of his intellectual interests were broad, as witnessed by his 30-plus-year membership in the Sphynx Club. Judge Springer had a lifelong love of Morgan horses and was devoted to the continuation and improvement of the Morgan horse breed. He was a member and past president of the Vermont Morgan Horse Association, as well as being very active in many other capacities in the VMHA. He was a member and former director of the New England Morgan Horse Association and a member of the American Morgan Horse Association. For many years Judge Springer, along with his wife Margaret, hosted the Danville 4-H horse shows at his paddock in Danville during the Danville Fair. Judge Springer, along with his wife Margaret, were named as citizens of the year in 2000 by the Danville Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his numerous contributions to many organizations and to the youth of the greater Danville community, he was a 35-year member of the Danville Congregational Church. He served the church as a member of the Prudential Committee and for many years enjoyed singing in the church choir. He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 62 years; three daughters, Valerie A. Johnston and husband David of Framingham, Mass., Sandra Palmer and husband Chester of Hartland, Vt., and Lynne Springer of Hartford, Vt.; a son, Jonathan L. Springer and wife Mary of Reading, Vt.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren (and one of the way); several nieces and nephews; two brothers, Richard P. Springer and wife Priscilla of Ascutney, Vt., and John E. Springer and wife Jane of Windsor, Vt.; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Springer of Enfield, Conn. He was predeceased by his youngest brother, Robert G. Springer. The family expresses their gratitude to the many programs and individuals who assisted him over the last few months. Mrs. Goodwin had worked for several area businesses including The St. Johnsbury House, Ned's Steakhouse and Glovers. From 1981-2002 she worked for Lyndon State College as a housekeeper. On Dec. 27, 1958, she married Reginald "Reg" Goodwin, who predeceased her June 25, 2002. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Goodwin of Sheffield, and Douglas and wife Jackie of Lyndonville; a daughter, Pamela Norrie of Sheffield; three sisters, Edith Wells of St. Johnsbury Center, Rose Garand of St. Johnsbury, and Roselee (Willey); six grandchildren; nieces- and nephews; in-laws Neil Goodwin and wife Sandra of Troy, N.H., and Maynard Cox of Baltimore, Vt.; and many good friends. , 92, of Lower Waterford, died at her home, Monday, Aug. 4, 2003. She was born in Center Strafford, N.H., May 1, 1911, the second daughter of the Rev. Lester and Bertha (Cummings) Pease. Dorothy attended schools in Middlesex, later graduating from Montpelier High School in 1929, the American International College in Springfield, Mass., in 1933 with a bachelor of arts degree in social work, and later the Johnson Normal School in 1936 with a certificate as an elementary school teacher. She went on to teach in Greensboro, Tunbridge and Waterford, all one-room schools. In 1962, she received the Layman's Award from the Essex-Caledonia School District. Mrs. Morrison was well known as the Lower Waterford postmaster for over 28 years. After her retirement in 1980, she was appointed librarian for the Davies Memorial Library. A member of the Union Baptist Church since 1952, she was a former Sunday School teacher as well as school secretary/treasurer. Other interests included 4-H Club leader, officer in the Waterford School Association (seven years), organist at the Lower Waterford Congregational Church (1934-1952), Sunday School teacher at the Lower Waterford Church, Fairbanks Museum (she was named a Fellow of the museum in 1992), a Waterford correspondent to the Littleton Courier, and a faithful weather reporter for many years. On June 21, 1942, she married Arthur T. Morrison, who predeceased her in 1985. Survivors include her four children, David and wife Heidi Morrison of Waterford, Mildred Ellen and husband Robert Winston of Prescott, Ariz., Annie Beth and husband David Southard of Concord, N.H., and Mary Lina Morrison of North Adams, Mass.; a brother, Gerald Pease, and sister, Ellen Pease, both of Middlesex, Vt.; and three grandchildren, Troy and wife Therese Winston of Clermont, Fla., and Salem Elizabeth and Joel Michael Southard, both of Concord, N.H. , 72, of Sheffield, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in Sheffield, Feb. 3, 1931, the son of Walter DeGreenia and Emma (Chamberlain) Kettle. He attended school in Sheffield. During his life he worked as a logger, painter and farm hand. He worked for Charlie Richardson of Sheffield as a farm hand and for Avon and Cleveland Minor of Lyndonville as a painter. He was a member of the Sheffield Federated Church. He is survived by four brothers and their wives, Lyle DeGreenia and companion Wanda Reed of Glover, Leslie and Althea DeGreenia of Sheffield, Phil and Patty DeGreenia of Glover, and Jason and Jossie DeGreenia of Sheffield; one sister and her husband, Georgia and Harold Newland of Sheffield; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the William Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield, Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ted Ruggles officiating.

, 87, of Westmore, Vt., and Southbury, Conn., died Saturday, July 26, 2003 after a short illness, in St. Johnsbury. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Emeline L. MacFall Isselle. Ralph was born Feb. 2, 1916 in Stamford, Conn., to Charles and Florence (Chalice) Isselle. He was raised in Darien, Conn., where he was active in high school sports. He was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 59 for 14 years, and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He began his career as a landscaper/nurseryman in the Isselle family nursery. For the majority of his career he worked for Southern New England Telephone Company, retiring in 1976. Hobbies included woodworking, cabinetry and gardening, and he was happiest when helping others. In 1978 Ralph and Emeline moved to Westmore, which they enjoyed since honeymooning there at Lake Willoughby in 1938. Since 1998, Ralph and his wife have lived in Westmore and Southbury, Conn. He is survived by his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Janice and David Hapke of Wilton, Conn., and Susan and John Lange of Winsted, Conn.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanne Isselle Magnuson of Darien, Conn. He was predeceased by two sisters, Charlotte Knight and Doris Bruno, and four brothers, Louis, James, Mark and Karel. A memorial service will be held at a later date. , 62, of East Concord, died Friday morning, Aug. 8, 2003, after a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Johnsbury , Feb. 10, 1941, the daughter of Edward and Marjorie (Smith) Gervais. She married Roland Garand on June 12, 1959. Many will remember Evelyn as a waitress at Archie's Bakery and coffee server at Dunkin' Donuts in St. Johnsbury where she worked a total of 16 years. Evelyn was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Theresa's Church in Gilman. She loved her family and friends; she loved to go camping and fishing. She is survived by her husband Roland of East Concord; three daughters, Theresa Silver and husband Doug of Hill, N.H., Patricia Simon and former husband Socrates, both of Manchester, N.H., and Pamela Jean Simonds and husband Dan of Lunenburg; five grandchildren, Jamie Glum, Kayla Gros-Jean, Stephanie Gros-Jean, Jessica Simonds and Daniel R. Simonds; one great-grandson, Levi; two brothers, Edward Gervais, of San Antonio, Texas, and Darell Gervais and wife Gerri of St. Johnsbury; three sisters, Yvonne Eastman and husband Reggie of Herman, Maine, Irene Smith and husband Francis of Concord, and Pauline Miles and husband Philip of Concord; cousins, nieces and nephews, and the Garand family. , 76, of 2883 South Bayley Hazen Road, Ryegate, died Friday, August 8, 2003, at his home, following an extended illness. "Ed" or "Eddie," as he was better known by his family and friends, was born Dec. 3, 1926, a son of Perley and Winona (Henderson) Sulham, and was raised and lived most of his lifetime in Ryegate. Ed was employed in his early years by the State of Vermont Transportation Dept., and as road commissioner for the town of Ryegate Highway Dept. In the mid-60's to mid-70's he owned and operated his own excavating business. In his later years he was employed by Powers Landfill, and again by the town of Ryegate, retiring from the town in the fall of 1998. Ed enjoyed gatherings of family and friends, hunting, fishing and working in his vegetable garden. He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Richard; and a half brother, Alton. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia (Hitchcock) Sulham of Ryegate; their children and spouses, E. Scott and Cathy Sulham of Ryegate, Violet "Vidy" and Calvin Cookman of Ryegate, Sandra and Robert "Casey" Roy of Barnet, and Daryl and Cindy Sulham of Ryegate; five grandsons and spouses, Scott Sulham, Shane and Sue Sulham, Sloan and Carrie Sulham, Wayne Thompson and Gregory Crews; a great-granddaughter, Jordan Thompson, currently of Nurnberg, Germany; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Milford Sulham of Shell Knob, Mo., Russell Sulham of Wells River, and Homer Sulham of Ascutney; two sisters, Winona "Dolly" Phelps of South Ryegate, and Elizabeth "Tip" Patterson of Wells River; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 73, of Landaff, N.H., passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, after a short battle with cancer. Robert was born Feb. 26, 1930, a son to Thomas and Flora (Gelinas) Blowey, in Groton, Mass. He served six years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class and was stationed in Germany. Robert worked as a foreman for E.A. Comeau in Concord, Mass. Robert leaves behind a beloved wife of 50 years, Theo Blowey; his son, Thomas and wife Mary Blowey of Landaff; three daughters, Beverly and husband Chris Colby of Ware, Mass., Pam and husband Jim LaGrassa of Ashburnham, Mass., and Mary and husband Joe Pancini of Framingham, Mass.; a brother, Norman and wife Ellen Blowey of West Newbury, Vt.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and relatives Monday evening, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 77 South Main St., Lisbon, N.H. , 68, of Barton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. She was born in Barton, Jan. 5, 1935, the daughter of Ted and Shirley (Sanders) Brown. She attended Barton Academy and graduated from Mt. Holyoke College, Class of 1956. She married Richard Wheeler of Westmore. Before retiring, she worked as an AT & T operator in Boston and second- and third-grade teacher in Arizona. In California she worked for the U.S. Air Force wives activities, family service, and as thrift shop manager. In Vermont she worked for the Northeast Kingdom Cannery and the Department of Employment and Training for 17 years. She was president of the Barton Literary Club, and treasurer of the Barton United Methodist Church. She is survived by her son, Kevin John Wheeler of St. Johnsbury; her sister, Jackie Nattress of Pennsylvania; and her brother, Steven Brown of Barton. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 2:30 p.m., at the Barton United Methodist Church in Barton, with the Revs. Michael Caldwell and Joan Vincent officiating.

, 85, of LeRoy, N.Y., formerly of Vergennes, Vt., a former co-owner at Timberline Park Lake Campground in LeRoy, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, N.Y. Mrs. Paquin was born March 11, 1918 in Monroe, N.H., a daughter of the late Milo and Mary Gibson Persons Sr. She farmed in Vermont until 1972 then moved to New York and was co-owner of the campground along with her husband until retirement. She was an avid card player. Her husband, Christien J. Paquin, died May 30, 2003. She is survived by her children, Merrick and wife Julie Gray of New Hampshire, Lorraine and husband Lester Armell of Georgia, Lillian and husband Clifford Norris of LeRoy, Lorretta and husband Paul Lawrence of Ferrisburg, Linda and husband Robert Dries of Hamlin, Paul Paquin of Ferrisburg, Christien and wife Brenda Paquin of Canton, and Leo Paquin of Florida; sisters Mary Wentzell of New Hampshire, Lucy Elliott of Connecticut, Clara Young of St. Johnsbury, and Beverly Richardson of South Burlington; brothers, John Persons of Waterbury, Delano Persons, Truman Persons and Dewey Persons, all of St. Johnsbury; 30 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. , 91, of West Street, Groveton, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Country Village Genesis Health Care, Lancaster, following a lengthy period of declining health. Born in Groveton, Sept. 4, 1911, the son of Clayton J. and Stella (Masure) Potter, he was a lifelong resident of Groveton. He married Ruth E. Bailey, Sept. 29, 1934; they would have been married 69 years on Sept. 29, 2003. Howard was a very active member of the Groveton United Methodist Church and Methodists Men. He was a graduate of Groveton High School, Class of 1929. He was an active member of Gilkey Lodge 101 F & AM of Groveton, and the Odd Fellows. He was also a member of Cape Horn, Groveton, and Stratford Grange; he received his 75th-year certificate in 2002. He was a very hard worker, enjoying his garden, and he also drove school bus in order to stay busy. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Groveton Papers as a printer. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Potter of Groveton; a daughter, Mrs. Bethany Ober and husband John of Tewksbury, Mass.; a brother, J. Richard Potter and wife Harriette of Groveton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four nephews; and one niece. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Kipp, a long-time teacher at Groveton Elementary School; and two sisters, Dorothy Potter and Donna Young. , 87, of St. Johnsbury, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, with his wife of 50 years, Marie, by his side. He was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Rice Lake, Wis., to Mary (Vojacek) and Vincent Vojta. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and was stationed in England and France. He was injured and sent home on an army hospital ship in 1944. After his discharge he attended business school in St. Joseph, Mo. He moved to Connecticut in 1949, where he met and married Marie (Cummings) Reynolds in September 1953. They moved to Vermont in 1988 after John retired from the Bridgeport Post Office, where he worked for 26 years. John loved his accordion and played with many bands throughout his lifetime. He favored the "old-time" music and country and western. He also enjoyed learning and reading about history. He is survived by his wife, Marie (Reynolds) Vojta (29 Idlewood Terrace, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819); four sons, John S. Vojta of Wheelock, Jerry "Bud" and wife Darlene Reynolds of Fairfield, Conn., William Reynolds of St. Johnsbury, and David and wife Nancy Reynolds of St. Johnsbury; one daughter, Judy Reynolds of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a foster daughter, Andrea Beaupre of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Helen Hernandez of Fairfield, Conn., and Margaret Johnson of Portland, Ore.; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by four brothers, Jerry, Vincent, Joe and Charlie Vojta. , 70, of Lyndonville, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville. He was born in Granville, N.Y., Aug. 25, 1932, the son of Roy and Rose (Parks) Lee. A graduate of the Granville High School, he worked most of his life for the Norton Co., now St. Cobain, of New York, as a machinist. Walter had also worked in the slate quarries in New York and as a dairy farmer. Mr. Lee had a great interest in Vermont history, going to auctions, reading, but most of all, loved his family. On Dec. 2, 1989, he married Carolyn (Mcpherson), who survives him in Lyndonville. Other survivors include two sons, Dale Lee of Schaghticoke, N.Y., and Stephen and wife Diane Lee of Fair Haven, Vt.; three daughters, Sharon Cook of Poultney, Vt., Judy and husband Michael Monroe of Granville, N.Y, and Cynthia and husband Roger Brown of Lake Bomoseen, Vt.; one brother, Stanley and wife Beverly Lee of Binghamton, N.Y.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce Lee, Nov. 17, 1986; and a sister, Janice. Funeral services will be held at the Guibord Funeral Home, Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. , 77, of Newport, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at the Bel-Aire Center in Newport, with his family at his side. Don was born March 28, 1926 in West Burke to Alice Augusta Ames, a schoolteacher, and Alba Zeno Craig, a carpenter. He grew up in West Burke and attended St. Johnsbury Academy, graduating in 1945, and attended Middlebury College for a year. Don married Eunice Kathleen Young, who also grew up in West Burke, on Oct. 23, 1948. St. Johnsbury became home, where he and Eunice raised their family and Don was employed by the Ralston Purina Co. for 22 years. In 1970 the family moved to Newport, where Don was employed by Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Services for 20 years, principally as comptroller. In 1975-76 he was acting executive director, and he later participated in the Harvard Medical School Continuing Education Program for Mental Health Planners/Administrators. Always surrounded by books, Don was an eclectic reader and an accomplished writer. In 1987 he published "AMEN: A Book of Uncommon Prayer," and in 2001, "A Lens of Ice - Poems and Theorems." In addition, he presented many papers for the Synapse Society, of which he was a long-time member. As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship since 1964, Don was involved in leadership positions and enjoyed conducting services in area churches from the many sermons he wrote. In 1961 Don's woodworking skills shone through when he built Tulgey Wood, a tree house (still in use) for his children at Newark Pond. Later, he crafted doll houses for his granddaughters, so strongly-built that his great-grandchild is enjoying them today. Don was also one who could appreciate everyday pleasures, Eunice's good cooking, especially the birthday chocolate pies, classical music, jack-o-lanterns, animals (especially dogs), an occasional dry martini, a rousing game of croquet, Groundhog Day and loons. Some of his happiest times over the past 60 years were spent enjoying family, friends and quiet times at their camp at Newark Pond. He will be remembered foremost as a soft-spoken man of kindness and compassion; a passionate life-long learner and a patient teacher; and a man of unshakable principles and quiet humor. His survivors include Eunice, his best friend and wife of 55 years; their daughter Cynthia and husband Paul Greenwood of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two sons, Reginald and partner Karen Frank of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Charles and partner Margo Trotier of Burlington; and three grandchildren, Tammy Greenwood-Stewart and husband Patrick Stewart of San Diego, Calif., Ceilidh Greenwood of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michael Appleby of Newport. In July Don was able to meet his first great-grandchild, Mikaela Stewart of San Diego, Calif. He was a special uncle to 10 nieces and nephews, and "brother" to Bernard and Barbara Blake of Lyndonville and Beverly Young of Gastonia, N.C. Also surviving are his treasured friends of many years. He was predeceased by his parents, along with Arline Young, Gerald Young, Vanessa Brown, his granddaughters Miranda and Jillian Greenwood, and his dear friend James Hayford. At Don's request there will be no services. Should one wish, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice. , 80, of Pageant Park Road, Barton, passed away in Newport, Monday, Aug. 11, 2003. He was born in Newport, March 1, 1923, the son of Frederick and Olive (Pelky) Prue. Reginald served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a supervisor at Ethan Allen, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion Lyndon Post 30 and a member of the VFW Newport Alfred Pepin Post 798. Reginald enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. On May 16, 1952 he married the former Lena Tosseau, who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Marie Coons and husband Norman of Sutton, Karen Lussier and friend Shane Allen of Blandinsville, Ill., Reginald Prue Jr. and wife Pamela of Westmore, Duane Prue and wife Marilyn of Barton, Timothy Duffy and wife Sarah of Burlington, and Louis Prue and wife Jennifer of Hinesburg; his grandchildren, Steven Jr. and Robert Lussier; Tanya and Jean Norris; and Crystal, Brittany, Bryant, Joshua and Zoe Prue; his great-grandson, Sabastion Carroll; his brother, Frederick Prue of Irasburg; his sisters, Madeline Collins of Littleton, Elaine Daniels of Alaska, and Marion Lakin of Littleton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister. , 81, of 427 Old Partridge Lake Road, Littleton, passed away suddenly at the Littleton Regional Hospital, Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003. She was born in Passumpsic, the daughter of Charles and Beatrice (Fellows) King. She had been a resident of Littleton for the past 60 years, and was formerly employed at the Profile Cleaners as a presser. She and her late husband were avid campers, members of the Good Sam Club, and loved boating on Moore Dam. She loved working in her garden, was a renowned cook, especially pies and cakes, but most of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the focus of her life. She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1998. She is survived by a son, William and wife Mary King, two daughters, Constance and husband Archie Deland, and Debbie and husband David Daine, all of Littleton; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. , 53, of Concord, died suddenly in St. Johnsbury, Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Lyndon, June 16, 1950, the son of the late Robert Burns Rodger and W. Rose (Montgomery) Rodger, who survives him in Lyndonville. A 1968 graduate of St. Johnsbury Trade School, Dana was a carpentry specialist in the U.S. Air Force and later worked for Northern Auto and Whitney Motors as a parts manager. Mr. Rodger was a member of the First Congregational Church of St. Johnsbury Center, where he was deacon emeritus. During the winter months in Arizona, he organized a gospel fellowship for members of his RV park. He volunteered at St. Johnsbury Academy in the vocational department and did presentations at the medical school at Dartmouth College on faith healing. Other interests included playing pool, camping, canoeing, working on his computer and taking in the races at Thunder Road in Barre. On Aug. 9, 1969, he married Elogene H. Berry, who survives him in Concord. Other survivors include three children, Aaron and wife Rebecca Rodger of Newark, Alycia and husband Nicholas Vosinek of Monroe, N.H., and Nancy and husband Travis Wright of West Burke; three sisters, Ruth and husband Dan Stocker of Clarendon, Vt., Jacqueline Frey of Littleton, N.H., and Gail and husband Sam Roberts of St. Johnsbury; five grandchildren, Ryley and Faythe Rodger, Tyler Vosinek, Elizabeth and Zackery Wright; and nieces and nephews. , 70, of Lisbon, N.H., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, N.H. Rodney was born in Littleton, April 13, 1933, the son of Davila and Florence (Sharman) Tardiff. He attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Littleton. Rodney served as a rifleman in the U.S. Army. After receiving an honorable discharge from the army, he returned to Lisbon and was employed by the Plymwood Furniture Company, Connors Shoe Company and most recently by the Grove Hill Cemetery. He married his wife, Bette Wells, April 28, 1956. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. , "Bob," 78, of Irasburg, died suddenly, Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Newport. He was born April 24, 1925 in St. Johnsbury, a son of Robert and Mamie (Wright) Shepard. On June 30, 1946 he married Marielle T. Royer, who survives him. During his lifetime he was a dairy farmer in Irasburg and he was also employed for Drown's Mill as a debarker for 10 years. For four years, he was employed for the town of Irasburg as a road commissioner until his retirement. Mr. Shepard was an active Boy Scout master and unit commissioner. He also taught unit commissioners in several Boy Scout troops in the area. Mr. Shepard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7763 of Orleans and 4th Degree Newport Gibbons Assembly 1157, and a member of the Irasburg Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Marielle Shepard of Irasburg; three children, Robert Edward Shepard Jr. and wife Sylvia of Lawrence, Mass., Marilyn Harding and husband Gary of Chester, N.H., and Marcia Spates and husband Russell of Lawrence, Mass.; four grandchildren, Steven and Theresa Harding and Sarah and Christine Spates; four great-grandchildren, William, Matthew, Andrew and Emily Plumer; and a sister, Betty Bryer and husband Leon of St. Johnsbury. , "Chuck," 32, of Lewis Hill Road, Bethlehem, N.H., passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, in Bethlehem as a result of injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident. Chuck was born June 7, 1971, in Littleton, a son of Charles William "Billy" and Mary Ann (Wiggett) Champagne. He attended Bethlehem Elementary School and graduated from Profile Junior/Senior High School in 1989, where he met his wife. He was employed at Burndy Manufacturing in Lincoln and at Burndy in Littleton for the past six years. Chuck loved to ski and was a chaperone for the elementary school ski program. He enjoyed motocross riding and shared all his joy and happiness with his family, with whom he spent all his free time. He was a devoted father and husband and loved life. Chuck is survived by his wife, Dottie (Washburn) Champagne of Bethlehem; a son, Seth Allen Champagne of Bethlehem, born in 1990; a daughter, Skye Alicia Champagne of Bethlehem, born in 1992; his mother, Mary Ann Champagne of Littleton; two brothers, Frank Champagne of Littleton, and Fredrick Champagne of Bethlehem; three sisters, Rose Marie Pierce of Littleton, Jenny Ingerson of Littleton, and Lisa Pilotte of Bethlehem; his father-in-law, Fremont Washburn Sr. of West Stewartstown, N.H.; and his mother-in-law, Anna Gaudette of Groveton, N.H.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends. She attended St. Joseph Grammar School, Mount St. Joseph Academy and Morris Business College, and had been a devoted homemaker during her 54 years of marriage to husband, Ray. She spent most of her life in Connecticut prior to moving to Littleton 15 years ago. , 72, of St. Johnsbury, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003. He was born in St. Johnsbury, May 26, 1931, the son of Roy and Kathleen (Cox) Greene. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Trade School, Mr. Greene served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked in construction most of his life working for area firms including Lawrence Sand and Gravel and Calco. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and snowmobiling. Kermit thought the world of his family and took great interest in his grandchildren. On May 22, 1954, he married Gloria (Langlois) Greene, who predeceased him Feb. 11, 2001. Survivors include a son, Michael and wife Tina Greene, and their children Zachary and Kaylee, all of Ryegate; a sister, Dorine Moore of Winthrop, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Leon Greene in 1972, and twin brother, Kenneth Greene in 1996. , 83, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at the Life Care Center in Winter Haven. She was born April 5, 1920 in Springfield, Mass. She worked as an agent and bookkeeper for Cassady Ins. and H & R Block in North Haverhill, N.H. She moved from North Haverhill to Florida in 1970. She was a member of the St. Johnsbury Chapter Women of the Moose, the Lake Alfred Lions Club, a former member of the Tiger Lake Lions Club, and in her younger years she was active in many other civic groups. She enjoyed golf and playing bridge. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick A. Stoddard, in 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Dustin of Winter Haven, Fla., and Sharon Munson and husband Gary of Benton, N.H.; a son, Francis Stoddard and wife Diana of Greensboro, N.C..; a brother, Curtis L. Cassady of Lititz, Pa.; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven, Fla. 68, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Tuesday evening, Aug. 19, 2003, surrounded by his entire family. He was born Nov. 20, 1934 in St. Johnsbury, the son of Ronald Lionel and Myrtle (McElreavy) McKee. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1952 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. The McKees had been former residents of 9 Garey's Drive in Littleton. Howie was employed as a salesman for the former W.S. Tilton Food Co., a.k.a. Independent Food Co. He was a member of Elks BPOE 1343 and the St. Johnsbury Country Club. At the age of 53, Howie suffered a life-altering stroke. He and and his wife Nancy moved back to St. Johnsbury. He demonstrated a grace and dignity in dealing with his everyday life. Weather permitting, he could be seen around the upper Main Street area with his motorized wheelchair; that first day out in the spring was so very special. A daily destination was the fire department where he continually reminded the firefighters to "plug the engines in" after a call. Of all the challenges he faced, his greatest loss was not playing golf. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Leach) McKee of 17 Church St., Apt. 2, St. Johnsbury; four children, Timothy McKee of St. Johnsbury, Linda Stafford and husband D. Neil of St. Johnsbury, Lisa McKee of Hatfield, Mass., and Todd McKee and wife Shannon of Littleton; seven grandchildren, Jarrid and JasonMcKee; "DB," Adam, Elliot and Aaron Stafford; and Jack McKee Heath; one great-granddaughter, Emma Stafford; one sister, Phyllis Lawson and husband Tom of Middlebury; three nieces, one nephew, cousins and the entire Leach in-laws. He was predeceased by an infant son, Jeffrey, who would have been the second oldest. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m., at the North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury. , 89, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was born June 6, 1914, in Dalton, N.H., the daughter of John and Nellie (Smith) Harriman. Mrs. Chester was married to the late Mr. Baron Chester of Lyndon, who died in 1960. She moved to Port St. Lucie 12 years ago from Waltham, Mass. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Waltham, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a den mother for both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Her special interests included traveling and her summer home in New Hampshire. Before retiring at the age of 75, Mrs. Chester was a cryptographer for ITEK, working on Project "Corona," a spy satellite program. She is survived by a son, John Chester and wife Adele of Wilbraham, Mass.; a grandson, Baron Chester and wife Frances of Acton, Mass.; and two granddaughters, Audrey and husband Michael Lyons and their children, Aryanna and Jack Lyons, all of Key West, Fla.; and Sonja and husband Aaron Nelson of Chapel Hill, N.C. A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m., at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham, Mass. , 69, of West Side Drive, Lunenburg, died at his home Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003. Mr. Streeter was born in East Concord, Vt., Aug. 15, 1934, the son of Harry and Lilla (Smith) Streeter. Carl was raised in East Concord and was a 1934 graduate of Concord High School. On Oct. 6, 1956, he married Carol Ramsdell. For a time he served with the U.S. Air Force and in 1965 they moved to Connecticut where they resided for 38 years. For 25 of those years he was employed as a machinist with Package Machinery in East Longmeadow, Mass. Carl enjoyed bluegrass music and played both guitar and banjo. He also had an interest in antique cars. Family members include his wife, Carol R. Streeter of Lunenburg; five children, Cynthia Aitcheson of Enfield, Conn., Robert Streeter of St. Johnsbury, Kathryn Mattingly of Tarrifville, Conn., Rebecca Green of Enfield, Conn., and Doreen Kibbe of Enfield, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; a brother, Leslie Streeter of Lunenburg; two sisters, Nila Berry of East Concord, and Marion Spriggs of Merrimack, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Glenn Streeter, Bernard Streeter and Clifford Streeter. There are no visiting hours. , 78, of Whitefield, N.H., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. She was born in Newport, Vt., June 4, 1925, the daughter of Clarence and Elsie (Vincent) Brown. Mrs. Emery attended schools in Sutton, Burke and Holland. Gertrude was a great supporter of the Fryeburg Fair and an avid Red Sox fan. She took great delight in watching horse racing and going to the stock car races. She loved her family and will be missed by her many friends. On Sept. 25, 1947, she married Lloyd Emery, who predeceased her May 17, 1989. Survivors include four sons, Irving Emery of Lyndon Center, Donald Emery and friend Gisele Fletcher of Newport, Howard and wife Pamela Emery of Newport Center, and Kenneth and wife Patricia of Colchester; a daughter, Erma and husband Jeffrey Young of Dalton, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Brenda and Robert Burke of Glover; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Albert and Cecil. , 92, formerly of Lyndon Corner, died Thursday morning, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Carriage Inn Nursing Home in Dayton, Ohio. She was born July 11, 1911, in Whitefield, N.H., the daughter of Frank and Melina (Fournier) Pilotte. She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1930. Mrs. Duke worked as a telephone operator for AT & T for 21 years. She will be remembered for her large tulip garden, and she sold tulips from her home in Lyndon Corner. She was a member of the Lyndonville Womens Club, Telephone Pioneers of America, and a longtime member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville. In 1999 she moved to Ohio to live with her son George. After being stricken by illness in 2000, she resided at the nursing home in Dayton. She is survived by her only son, George F. Duke and wife Susan of Englewood, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Duke and Nicole Lawson; and four great-grandchildren, Brook and Katie Duke, and Baylee and Drake Lawson. She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Frank Duke, in 1967; two brothers, Russell and George Pilotte; and three sisters-in-law, Hazel Callahan, Charlotte Drouin, and Margaret Smith. Fran was a former member of the Groton United Methodist Church, and she attended Trinity Church of the Nazarene, North Haverhill, N.H., for the past six years. She was a member of the Sunshine Bowling League, and she enjoyed visiting the elderly and taking them for rides. She also enjoyed her crafts, crocheting, gardening and watching birds. She ran errands for the Salvation Army and transported kids to Camp Sebago. Fran was predeceased by her daughter, Donna-Marie Pollock, May 11, 2000; and a brother, Charles Smith. Surviving relatives include her husband, Leslie E. Edwards of Groton; three sons: Warren Stewart II and Jeff Stewart, both of Groton, and Leslie E. , beloved wife of Lt. Col. Melvin A. McKenzie, USAF, Retired, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, from respiratory failure in the aftermath of a major stroke on Friday, Aug. 12, in Tallahassee, Fla. Mrs. McKenzie was born Hazel Bernice Hays, June 19, 1920, in Midland, Ind., the fourth child of Edgar B. Hays and Emma P. Tatum, both of farming families in the Lebanon, Ky., area. Bernice graduated from the Indianapolis School of Nursing in 1942. As a registered nurse and member of the American Red Cross, she was called to active duty as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in 1943 and reported to duty at Eglin Field, Fla. Bernice received a military commendation for her actions as a surgical nurse in the aftermath of an accidental explosion on the base that killed 17 and wounded 51 airmen. While at Eglin, she met and married then Major Melvin A. McKenzie, formerly of St. Johnsbury and a 1933 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, who had returned from aerial combat in the Pacific. Together they had military assignments to the Pentagon, Air Command and Staff College, Nagoya, Japan and Patrick AFB, Fla., before settling in Dayton, Ohio. After her husband's retirement from Civil Service in 1988, they lived in Shalimar, Fla., until July 2003, when they moved to Tallahassee. Bernice is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lt. Col. Melvin A. McKenzie, USAF, Retired; two sons, Lt. Col. Mark A. McKenzie, USAF, Retired, of Omaha, Neb., and Major Matthew A. McKenzie, USAF, of Tampa, Fla.; three daughters, Frances A. McKenzie of Beacon, N.Y., Catherine M. Benton and Cynthia M. Alison, both of Tallahassee; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her elder sister, Irene Hays Shewmaker of Danville, Ky. An infant daughter, Sandra F. McKenzie, predeceased Bernice in 1944. , 70, of Hernando, Fla., and South Ryegate passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Hernando. Mrs. Patneaude was born May 21, 1933, in Danville, a daughter of Ralph and Madeline (Morse) Bradley. Mrs. Patneaude spent her early years growing up in the Peacham area, and enjoyed going to the Maine seacoast during summers. Mrs. Patneaude attended the Peacham Academy, and became a military wife to Joseph S. Patneaude, son of Joseph D. and Alice (Desrochers) Patneaude of Barnet, Oct. 18, 1953. Mrs. Patneaude spent many years raising her family, while living in Florida and Oklahoma, and returned to the New England states during the course of her military wife's career. Mrs. Patneaude and her husband enjoyed traveling and covered most of the United States, Hawaii, Mexico and Europe during their years together. Mrs. Patneaude and her husband settled in South Ryegate and opened a community care home for the elderly, continuing to work with the home until her and her husband's retirement. After retiring, Mrs. Patneaude spent winters in Florida with her husband until his death in January 1993, at which time she became a permanent Florida resident, visiting Vermont annually. Mrs. Patneaude spent her later years enjoying the Florida warmth and spending time with friends, playing cards and Bingo. Mrs. Patneaude was predeceased by her husband, Joseph S. Patneaude; and one brother, Albert J. Bradley of Peacham. Mrs. Patneaude is survived by one sister, Ida (Bradley) McClintock and husband Bill of Monroe, N.H.; two brothers, Fred Bradley and wife Jean of McMinnville, Tenn., and Donald Bradley and wife Alma of West Burke; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Patneaude is survived by her sons, Ralph Patneaude of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Robert Patneaude and companion Rose Miller of Barnet and St. Albans, Dale Patneaude and wife Dawn of South Ryegate, and Steve Patneaude and wife Gerry, also of South Ryegate; and one daughter, Dana Starr and husband Bob of Barre. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1951. She was very active in the community and Holiday Meals program. She had been the postmaster of the East St. Johnsbury Post Office for 22 years. She and her late husband also operated the retail grocery business at Goodwin's General Store since 1978. She was predeceased by her husband, Glendon W. Utley, April 20, 2003. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Michael and Sandra Utley of Carver, Mass., Carmen and Bob Alberghini of Carver, Mass., and Kenrick and Bobbi Utley of West Burke; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Phoebe Goodwin of Barnet; a sister, Beverly and husband Leigh Larocque of Passumpsic; a brother, Bill Goodwin of North Haven, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews and aunts. , 66, of Lancaster, N.H., died Sunday morning, Aug. 24, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mr. Bergquist was born in North Conway, N.H., July 8, 1937, the son of Andrew and Hazel Betty (Davis) Bergquist. Mr. Bergquist grew up in Marblehead, Mass., and graduated from Whitefield High School in Whitefield, N.H. He joined the U.S. Army and became a member of the 101st Airborne Unit, based in Fort Campbell, Ky., until his honorable discharge. While living in New York State, he obtained a business administration degree. He worked over 20 years in the food service industry, becoming manager in Connecticut and, later, regional manager in North Carolina. He was very active in civic affairs in Asheville, N.C., particularly in work involving the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club. He was also active in local church activities and the Catholic Cursillo movement. He moved back to New Hampshire in 1984, where he became involved in the forestry industry until his retirement 31/2 years ago. He most recently worked with Tri-County Headstart at the Groveton Center, where he dearly loved the children. He was very instrumental in obtaining communication for their transportation system, which will be initiated this fall. Andy was a member of Lancaster's Rotary Club for a time. He also spent many hours as a volunteer with the Lancaster Main Street Program, helping create and install interpretive signs for the Israel Riverwalk. He was particularly interested in the conservation and utilization of natural resources. He thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors, canoeing and gardening. His love of all things in nature was reflected in his outstanding photography. Family members include his wife of 16 years, Sandra (Schepeler) Bergquist of Lancaster; a daughter, Sonya Marie Willard and husband Craig of Midlothian, Va.; a son, Eric J. Bergquist and wife Dawn of Hagerstown, Md.; a step-son, Roger M. Borlase of Ipswich, Mass.; a step-daughter, Heather E. Borlase-Bayer and husband Alan Bayer of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren, Noah, Joshua, Benjamin, Evelyn Marie, and Erica Ann; two brothers, Jack M. Bergquist of Dalton, N.H., and Richard C. , 40, of Gilman, died Sunday, August 24, 2003, in East Concord. Mr. Knudson was born in Lancaster, N.H., May 7, 1963 the son of Charles K. and Clarice J. (McKeage) Knudson. Steven was a lifetime resident of Gilman where he attended Gilman Elementary and Concord High School. He was employed at H.G. Woods, Bath, N.H., where he had worked for many years. He was also employed for a time at Hitchiner Manufacturing, Littleton, and New England Electric Wire, Lisbon, N.H. He had many interests and was a jack of all trades. These included repairing and rebuilding automobiles and carpentry work that he did at home. He also enjoyed riding the local back roads and his camp in Concord. His greatest pleasure came in spending time with and taking care of his children. Family members include his son, Craig Knudson of Gilman; a daughter, Krystal Knudson of Gilman; his father, Charles K. Knudson of Gilman; three brothers, Charles G. Knudson of Lunenburg, Rodney R. Knudson of East Concord, and Paul S. Gilman of Whitefield; one aunt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and two brothers, Randy L. Knudson and Dean Gilman. , 81, of Island Pond, died peacefully, Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at her home with her family by her side. She was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Island Pond, a daughter of Max and Ida (Bishop) Bailey. On Sept. 11, 1942, she married Maynard Osborne, who predeceased her Jan. 13, 1980. She later married Reginald Hunt, Dec. 10, 1988; he survives her. Gwen was a newspaper reporter for the Essex County Herald, which was a family business, for many years. She and Maynard owned and operated the school bus system for the town of Brighton for numerous years and she was also a dental assistant for the Northern Counties Health Center in Island Pond where she retired. Gwen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 80 of Island Pond. Among her hobbies, she enjoyed dancing, knitting, reading, walking, swimming, camping, water skiing, beaches in Florida and she was an avid snowmobiler. Besides her husband, Reginald, Gwen is survived by her children, Barbara Boylan and husband Patrick of Bellows Falls, Gary Osborne and wife Janet of Island Pond, and Cynthia Gervais and husband Richard of Island Pond; her stepchildren, Richard Hunt and wife Marlene of Newport and Patricia King and husband Edward of North Clarendon; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth and Bernard Bailey. Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Island Pond, with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond. , 87, of Lancaster, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Boudle was born in Groveton, June 4, 1916, and raised there. She schooled in Revere, Mass., and lived the majority of her lifetime in Lancaster. A homemaker all her life, Madeline raised 10 children. She was very involved and devoted to her church, the Lancaster Assembly of God. She also enjoyed sewing and needlework. Her husband, Howard I. Boudle, predeceased her in 1988. Family members include seven sons, Irving H. Boudle of Stark, N.H., Robert E. Boudle of South Windsor, Conn., Ernest C. Boudle of Plattsburg, N.Y., Rodney L. Boudle of Jefferson, N.H., Alfred J. Boudle of Twin Mountain, N.H., Errol Boudle, and Aubrey J. Boudle of North Stratford, N.H.; three daughters, Linda R. Way of Concord, Vt., Laura L. McKensie of North Stratford, and Lorraine Virge of Twin Mountain; 38 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Greenwood of Waterbury, Conn. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 27, from 2-4 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m., at the Lancaster Assembly of God. The Rev. James Michael, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Stratford.

, 68, of Franconia, formerly of Lisbon, N.H., passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia after a long illness. She was born in Lisbon, Aug. 17, 1935, a daughter to Irving and Dorothy (Wetherbee) Chase. Louise was a lifelong resident of the North Country, having attended school in Lisbon. She was employed with the Henschel Shoe Company for many years and also worked at the Continental 93 Motor Lodge for several years. Louise loved to get out when she could and bowl, and was known for her avid passion to play bingo any chance she had. She is survived by one daughter, Deborah and husband Paul Arsenault of Jefferson, Maine; one son, James Gunnip of Lyndonville; one sister, Betty Livingston of Lisbon; and four grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her husband, James Gunnip Sr., and her companion of 18 years, Oliver Church, predeceased her. Graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster, with Pastor Ernest Wilkins of the New Life Assembly of God Church officiating.

, 85, of Franconia, N.H., formerly of Littleton, passed away at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003. He was born in Lancaster, Sept. 24, 1917, a son to Herbert and Florence (Johnson) Marshall. He graduated from Lancaster Academy and earned his pilot's license in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1950. Ray worked as a surveyor for the Brown Company for five years before starting his own forestry consulting and land surveying business. He married Lora Mary Carbonneau on July 15, 1956. Ray was a certified professional ski instructor and taught skiing at Cannon Mountain for over 20 years. He enjoyed flying and his times skiing with friends and family in Tuckerman's Ravine. He traveled extensively throughout North America with his wife and especially enjoyed his travels in British Columbia and Alaska. He is survived by one son, Peter Marshall of Littleton; one brother, Donald Marshall, and one sister, Helen Marshall, both of Lancaster. Graveside services will be held this morning, Thursday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Bascom officiating.

, 45, of West Chazy, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at the CVHP Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was born in St. Johnsbury, June 3, 1958, the son of Harry and Phyllis (Paradie) Sherman. Due to his father's career in the U.S. Air Force, David lived in Germany, Taiwan, and several states during his childhood. After graduation from Washburn, Maine High School in 1977, David joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Texas, Maine and the Aleutian Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1981 and was employed by a division of the Harris Corp. in Rochester, N.Y., as an electronic technician and then as a field engineer in Saudi Arabia. Severe injuries from an automobile accident in 1990 left him completely disabled. Surviving family members include his parents, Harry and Phyllis Sherman of West Chazy, N.Y.; three brothers, Harry Sherman and wife Cathy of Bellingham, Wash., William Sherman and wife Lori of St. Albans, and Kenneth Sherman of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Pillsbury Funeral Homes in Lisbon, N.H., Aug. 23. Burial followed in the Grove Hill Cemetery in Lisbon, N.H.

, 77, of Middlebury, Vt., passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury. He was born Dec. 11, 1925 in Lowell, the son of Pearl and Mildred (Bundy) Stephenson. He was a professor at the University of Vermont, and an agricultural agent for Addison County for 30 years. He was also a consultant for ten years for Farm Credit in St. Johnsbury. Mr. Stephenson was a volunteer at Porter Hospital for many years, which he enjoyed very much. He was also an avid skier, and taught not only his children, but also his grandchildren to ski. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Wright) Stephenson, with whom he just celebrated 54 years of marriage on Aug. 14; his son, John Jr. of Bristol; three daughters, Helen Stephenson-Levitz of Bronxville, N.Y., Carol Stephenson of Bethel, and Janet Stephenson-Zampini of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Norma Thomasson of High Point, N.C., and Sandra Daigle of Newport; and five beloved grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Middlebury United Methodist Church. , 73, of Glover, died as a result of a motor vehicle accident, Monday Aug. 25, 2003 in Barton. She was employed as an EMT-1 with the Barton Ambulance Squad and thoroughly enjoyed her work. She started her EMS career in the early 1970s with the Glover Ambulance and joined the Barton squad in 1988. Over her career, she held a leadership role, a training role and an education role in the communities of Barton, Glover, Orleans and Westmore, and was always available to help and assist in any capacity that she was asked to. She was awarded as the State of Vermont Advanced Rescuer of the Year in 1993 and was extremely proud of that and her work with the Barton Ambulance Squad, and was proud of the squad being selected as Ambulance Service of the Year for the state of Vermont in 2002. She was born on Long Island, N.Y., Feb. 3, 1930, to Preston "Pret" and Frances "Peg" Wheeler. Marge was educated on Long Island and graduated from Sewanaka High School, Class of 1947. She is survived by seven children, Nancy Davis and Robert Davis, both of Pasadena, Calif., Phyliss Braun and friend Frank of Derby, William Braun and wife Amy of Glover, Michael Braun and wife Rhonda of Irasburg, Philip Brooks and wife Kelley of Glover, and Krista Brooks and husband Brian of Long Island, N.Y.; her special friend and companion, Alden Robinson of Irasburg; her sister, Audrey Wheeler of Glover; her dog "Duffy," whom she adored; her aunt, Arlene Brooks of Barton; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Amyot of Glover, and Mona Rivard of Colchester; another special friend, Joanne Root of Barton; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Alton Brooks; and two siblings in infancy. Calling hours will be held at the Curtis Britch/Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport, Friday, Aug. 29, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Lake Region Union High School in Orleans at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Donald Vincent officiating. Interment will follow the service with a procession of public safety vehicles to the Westlook Cemetery in Glover, with the Rev. Don Vincent and Father Pat Foreman officiating. A luncheon will be served at the Lake Region Union High School cafeteria following the burial. All are welcome. , of St. Johnsbury, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, surrounded by her children. She was born Oct. 17, 1922, in Greenville, S.C., to the late Thomas and Virginia Elias Koury. Sarah graduated from Greenville High School and attended Furman University. She was an accomplished sculptress, and was awarded a full scholarship to study art and fashion design. Several of her works continue to be displayed in Greenville and Columbia, S.C. Sarah also had a lifetime interest in music and dance. In 1944 she married Ned W. Handy of Lyndonville and moved to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where she and Ned owned and managed businesses and properties in the area. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the St. Johnsbury Woman's Club, and formerly served on the St. Johnsbury Girl Scouts' Board of Directors. Sarah was predeceased by her husband, Ned W. Handy of St. Johnsbury; and sisters, Bertha T. Koury of St. Johnsbury, Victoria Koury Saad of Greenville, S.C., and Lyla, Sebena, and Mary Helen Koury, all of Greenville, S.C.; and brothers, Joseph, John, George and Sidney Koury of Greenville. Sarah is survived by a sister, Louise Koury Parker of Elizabethtown, N.C.; five children, Virginia Williams of Fairfax, Va., Marianne Hraibi of St. Johnsbury, Wadeane Kunz of Hanover, N.H., Edward W.S. Handy of Burlington, and Thomas K. Handy of New York City, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury, with the Rev. Patrick Forman officiating. , 85, of 3264 Gilman Road, Lyndon Center, passed away at his residence, Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. He was born June 17, 1918 in Lyndon, the son of the late Edson and Alice (Watkins) Gilman. He was a member of the Enterprise Grange for over 50 years. He had a great love for his family and extended family. He enjoyed bowling, dancing and hunting. He was predeceased by his wife, H. Elsie Gilman; and his son, William Gilman. He is survived by five children and their spouses, Barbara and Walter Bickford Jr. of Lyndonville, Betty and Wayne Lund of North Concord, Bonnie and Terry Francis of Eden Mills, Alice and Dexter Randall of Troy, and Susan and Robert LeBree of Lyndon Center; his daughter-in-law, Judy Gilman of St. Johnsbury; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pearsons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m., at the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Barbara Dwyer officiating. Burial will be in the Lyndon Center Cemetery.
