Fernand R. Poutre

, 74, of Newport, died following a brief illness in Newport on Friday, May 30, 2003. Mr. Poutre was born in Troy on September 28, 1928, the son of Alcide and Almeda (Choquette) Poutre. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School. He owned and operated the family farm in Troy, then bought and operated the Blue Seal Feed Store in Island Pond. He later purchased the P.W. Lawson car dealership in Newport, which became Poutre's Ford Sales. After selling the dealership, "Pout" was not one to retire. He spent the next several years developing pristine neighborhoods in the city of Newport and resided in them with his family and so many others who shared his vision of fine homes. "Poutie, Pepe, Dad" will be remembered for the profound effect he had on all who came into his circle of life. He gave advice, charity, and love freely to all, and he will continue to do so in his family members' hearts. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Austin); and by his beloved children: Patricia Poutre of Jericho, Rene Poutre of Nashua, New Hampshire, David L. Poutre and his wife, Priscilla, of Melrose, Massachusetts, James Poutre of Boston, Massachusetts, Kathryn Lang of Newport, and Douglas Gray and his wife, Darlene, of Jeffersonville; by his daughter-in-law Joan Poutre of Derby; and by his siblings: Fabien and Beverley Poutre of Newport, Real and Betty Poutre of Newport, Sister Solange Poutre of Champlain, New York, Rejeanne and Paul McGee of Montréal, Quebec, Jean-Guy Poutre of Plattsburg, New York, and Denis and Judy Poutre of Branford, Connecticut. He cherished his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were a big part of his life. He was predeceased by his son Michael Poutre; and by his siblings: Jervais, Hermance, Carmelle, and Germain. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 2 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Maurice Boucher and the Reverend Leo Bilodeau officiating. , 78, of Newport died in Newport on Thursday, May 29, 2003. Mrs. Lefebvre was born in St. Vital de Lambton, Quebec, on July 9, 1924, the daughter of Henri Louis and Emilia (Labrie) Theberge. She worked as a weaver and did upholstery work. On August 31, 1943, she married Leo Lefebvre, who predeceased her in July 1973. She is survived by her daughter Normande Gagne of Newport; by her grandchildren Donald Berube and his wife, Renea, and Alain Berube and his wife, Amanda; by her stepgrandchildren: Candace Sutton, Timothy Sutton, Christopher Sutton, and Jezabel Welch and her husband, Chad; by her great-grandchildren: Ava Marie Sutton-Berube, Angelique Sutton-Berube, Shayne Berube, Genysis Berube, and Taylor Welch; by her brother Lionel Theberge and his wife, Simone, of Rock Forest, Quebec; by her sisters Aline Theberge and her husband, Norman McLeod, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Normande Tremblay of Sherbrooke; and by several nieces and nephews. , 80, formerly of Derby and most recently of Scenic View Nursing Home in Westfield, died in Newport on Thursday, May 29, 2003. Mr. Guay was born in St. Romain, Quebec, on September 22, 1922, the son of Edmond and Roseanna (Gagne) Guay. He worked in maintenance at a Manchester, Connecticut, hospital. He was a volunteer driver for Rural Community Transportation in Newport, a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line, and a member of the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed playing cards and gardening. He is survived by his stepson George Raskell of Hopedale, Massachusetts; by his godchildren: Ginette, Rock, and Mario; by his special friends, Jean and Germaine Paul and families of Morgan; by his sisters-in-law: Roseanna Guay of Quebec, Jeanne Guay of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Madelaine Guay of Quebec, and Felicienne Guay of Sherbrooke; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 20 years, Betty Cummings; by his brothers: Anthony, Adelard, Leon, Gerard, and Andre; and by his sisters: Simone, Roseanna, and Germaine. , 63, died at her home in Coventry on Sunday, June 1, 2003. Mrs. Blake was born in Holland, Vermont, on December 15, 1939, the daughter of John and Earnestine (Baraw) Woodard. She graduated from Newport Center High School and worked for 35 years as the advertising coordinator at the Newport Daily Express. She loved spending time with her family, organizing family gatherings, and attending her grandchildren's functions. She also enjoyed her day trips with her companion, Dean. She was known for her positive, upbeat attitude, and was always able to find something positive in a bad situation and something to learn from it. She was a very caring person and was always one of the first to give people a helping hand. She was an active member of Coventry Congregational Church. On April 9, 1960, she married John Blake, who predeceased her on April 17, 1994. , 75, of Crystal River, Florida, died in Burlington on Saturday, May 31, 2003. Mrs. Worboys was born in Flushing, Long Island, New York, on October 30, 1927, the daughter of Robert Alton and Florence (Neacy) Paul. Her interest in home health care and the need in communities began while she was a member of the board of directors of Northeast Kingdom Mental Health (NEKMH). It was her understanding of the needs of such a program that led her to motivate and convince the other members of the NEKMH board to let the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) become a freestanding agency in 1973 and remained an active member of the VNA's professional advisory committee during this organizational growth. Her love of and commitment to the VNA and its mission remained strong throughout her residency in the Northeast Kingdom. She was a kind and generous person, always helping anyone in need. She enjoyed ceramics, bird watching, shopping, and smoking cigarettes. She was married to Earl "Bucky" Moore Worboys Sr., who predeceased her on December 4, 1977. She later married Stanley Colburn, who also predeceased her. She is survived by her children Margaret Worboys-Maniatty and her husband, Sut, of Palm Beach Garden, Florida, and Bucky Worboys Jr. and his wife, Mary Jo, of Clearwater, Florida; by her grandchildren: Jason Howe and his wife, Sara, of Burlington, Christopher Howe and his fiancée, Nicole, of Wyoming, Kathie Howe of Burlington, and Scotty Vogel of Palm Beach Garden; by her great-granddaughter Emily Howe of Burlington; by her nephew Bobby Paul and his wife, Chris, and their children: Bobby, Chris, and Jonathan; and by her niece Judy Paul and her son Jimmy Poole. , 73, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 6, 2003, at her home in Greensboro. Mrs. Salls was born December 24, 1929, in Rumford, Maine, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Leonie (Roberts) Chaloux. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Newport and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1948. She married Erwin Harvey Salls Sr. on September 11, 1948, in Hardwick. In 1951 she and her husband purchased a family dairy farm in North Greensboro, where she has made her home. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Greensboro Bend and a member and past vice president of the Greensboro Alumni Association. She enjoyed her family, attended her grandchildren's school activities, and tended her flower garden. Survivors include six children: Linda Dimick and her companion, Alan Lakin, of Moretown, Erwin Salls Jr. and his wife, Linda, and Wilfred Salls and his companion, Dusty Tucker, all of Greensboro, Leonia Pike and her husband, Fred, of Cabot; Edward Salls of Johnson, and Rose Bothfeld and her husband, Walter Jr., of Caobt; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three aunts; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mrs. Roberts was born in Wolcott on January 12, 1940, the daughter of Roland Sr. and Bessie (Moody) Denton. She worked as a cashier for the B&D Supermarket in North Troy for the past 16 years. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. On November 14, 1958, she married Dorio Roberts Sr., who survives her. Edward A. Mongeau

, 73, of Laughlin, Nevada, died May 31, 2003, in Bullhead City, Arizona. Mr. Mongeau was active in the food service industry from his early youth, through nine years in the U.S. Navy, and for many years after. Born and raised in Marlboro, Massachusetts, he attended schools there, matriculated at Central Connecticut State University, and graduated from Lyndon State College. He taught at-risk students at Wilby Senior High School in Waterbury, Connecticut, and vocational courses for handicapped men and women at Manchester Community College in Connecticut. He received recognition from several states for his innovative vocational approaches to teaching, and from the city of Manchester for selfless service in feeding hundreds of families when the city was without power for three or four days due to ice storms. In 1979 he and his wife moved to Vermont where they owned and operated The Long Branch Restaurant in Newport from 1987 until 1996, when they moved to Laughlin to be closer to their son. He worked in various casinos there until his illness. The couple lived on Lake Willoughby for 19 years. Mr. Mongeau was a chef at The WilloughVale Inn in Westmore and The Border Restaurant in Derby. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6 of Laughlin, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Newport, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Mission Church. He is survived by his wife, Irene; by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Janet Mongeau of Artesia, New Mexico; by a brother, Eugene H. Mongeau of Marlboro; by sister Yvonne Marie Lynch of Marlboro; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in New England. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Bullhead City at the convenience of the family, with burial of the cremated remains at Desert Lawn Catholic Cemetery in Mohave, Arizona. A memorial service will also be held at the American Legion on Sunday, June 22, at 4 p.m. with a reception for his friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

, 62, died at his home in Craftsbury on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, following an extended battle with cancer. Mr. LeBlond was born in St. Malachie, Quebec, on April 9, 1941, the son of Joseph and Regina (Patoine) LeBlond. He was married to Elvira "Vera" Granai, who survives. He worked at many jobs throughout his life. He worked on construction, built silos, and did road work, but the job closest to his heart was farming. For the past four years he had worked for Chip Nelson at his Craftsbury farm. He loved to work in his yard, planting trees and flowers. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Vera LeBlond, of Craftsbury; by his mother, Regina LeBlond, of Derby Line; by his children: James Hicks of Craftsbury, George Hicks and his wife, Lisa, of Newport, Billie Jo Tice and her husband, Gordon, of Derby, Robert Moore and his fiancée, Kim, of Brownington, and Candy LeBlond and her fiancé, Wilbur Baraw, of Derby; by eight grandchildren: Megan Tice, Jason Tice, David Hicks, Jacob Tice, Michelle Moore, Chelsy Baraw, Dalton Moore, and Michael Moore; by three sisters: Monique Campbell and her husband, Fern, of Orleans, Rejean LeBlond of Derby Line, and Suzanne Frizzel and her husband, Michael, of West Charleston; by two brothers, Ben LeBlond and his wife, Rosalie, of Newport and John LeBlond of Orleans; and by many nieces and nephews. , 82, died June 3, 2003, at Borgess Nursing Home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mrs. LaRose was born December 24, 1920, in Orleans, daughter of the late Harold W. and Helen D. (Remick) Heath. She was formerly of South Lyon, Michigan, for 33 years prior to moving to Canton, Michigan, in 1990. On October 27, 1940, she married Francis P. LaRose in Waterbury. She graduated from Orleans High School in 1938, and attended the University of Vermont, Johnson Teachers College, and Mary Fletcher Hospital for Nurses Training in Burlington. She was employed as a nurse for Sessions Hospital in Northville, Michigan, from 1953 to 1957 and then employed by Dr. Eugene Capuzzi in Northville from 1959 to 1986. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Whitmore Lake, Michigan. She is survived by her two children, Evelyn Kajkowski and her husband, Raymond, of Gobles, Michigan, and Peter LaRose of Canton; by seven grandchildren; by one great-granddaughter; and by one sister, Evelyn Chadwick, of Albany. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis LaRose, on July 9, 1981; and by her daughter Helen LaRose Meader on August 16, 1982. , 56, of Newport died suddenly at his home on June 2, 2003. Mr. Hall was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of the late Alfred Hall and Evelyn Cabana on September 23, 1946. He served in the U.S. Army and became a master electrician, working for Jay Peak for many years when it was owned by the Weyrhauser Company. He was a member of North Troy American Legion Post No. 28. He was injured in 1978, and even though he was not able to return to work, within his capabilities he continued to lead an active life. He is survived by his son Neil Jr. of Fairfax; by his mother, Evelyn, of North Troy and her friend, Jean Paul Choquette; by his brothers Dean of North Troy and John and his wife, Harriet, of Newport; by a sister, Judy Rotunno, of Derby; by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by the mother of his son, Pat Trombly, and her husband, Lee, of Newport. Funeral services were held June 7 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Carl Shoemaker officiating. , 86, of Charleston died in Lyndonville on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. Mrs. Gray was born in East Hereford, Quebec, on February 17, 1917, the daughter of Arthur and Mae (Gray) Owen. She was a 1934 graduate of Canaan High School. She worked as a secretary for Modern Woodman of Vermont and was town auditor in East Charleston for many years. She was also an accomplished seamstress and craft worker. She was a member of the Charleston Home Dem Club. On July 5, 1935, she married Russell Gray, who predeceased her on February 12, 2002. She is survived by her children: Ellis Gray of East Charleston, Owen Gray and his wife, Annette, of Montpelier, Lyle Gray and his wife, Amy, of Newport, Linda Gray of Austin, Texas, and James Bradley and his wife, Donna, of East Charleston; by 15 grandchildren; by 30 great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She graduated from North County Union High School in 1988 with her daughter JoAnn. She was a member of the American Legion Newport Post No. 21 Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bingo and scratch tickets and loved going to garage sales. On January 1, 1958, she married Dale Gibney Sr., who survives her. Donald McLellan Gebbie II

, 51, of Greensboro died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the home he built, after living with cancer for eight years. Mr. Gebbie was born June 23, 1951, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Donald M. and Madeline (Greaves) Gebbie. He attended Greensboro High School, and graduated in 1969 as valedictorian of his class at Lamoille Union High School in Hyde Park. He continued his education at Johnson State College. On May 31, 1980, he married Aileen Theresa Shea in Bennington. He was first employed by his father on the family-operated dairy farm. In 1980 he became one of the fifth generation owners of the Maplehurst Farm in Greensboro. In 1988 he sold his investment in the farm, and became involved in landscaping, bush hogging, backhoe work, and repair work for area residents. He attended St. Michael's Church in Greensboro Bend, was a member of the Lakeview Union School Board, and was chairman of the Greensboro Conservation Commission. He was a substitute teacher at Hazen Union School for several years. He enjoyed continuing his family's tradition of sugaring each spring. Other enjoyments included attending his children's school activities and doing all kinds of repair work. Mr. Dopp was born on January 19, 1920, in Sheffield, the son of Ernest and Ruth (Blair) Dopp. He worked on local farms and did many odd jobs during his life. He enjoyed collecting clocks, radios, and horse knickknacks. He was a member of the Baptist church in Lyndonville. She served in the Vermont National Guard, doing her basic training in Fort Rucker, Alabama. She was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. She enjoyed crafts, flowers, ceramic painting, crocheting, camping, and taking care of her grandbabies. On July 8, 1983, she married Edwin "Buzz" Shaw, who survives her. Mr. Lesperance was born in Magog, Quebec, on April 28, 1929, the son of Charles and Jeanette (Beauvais) Lesperance. He worked as a truck driver for Pike Industries for 20 years. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and cleaning his truck. On October 28, 1956, he married Gervaise Paquette, who predeceased him on October 10, 1994. He is survived by his daughters: Lucy Halik and her husband, Ed, of Bradford, Claire Lesperance of Middlebury, and Rose Marie Page and her husband, Shawn, of Newbury; by his brothers Edward Lesperance of Magog and Joseph Lesperance of Granby, Quebec; by his sisters Adrienne and Hugette of Magog; by five grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren. She worked for many years as a cook at the Miss Newport Diner. She enjoyed saving stray cats, sewing, playing bingo, growing plants, gardening, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. On February 14, 1953, she married Napoleon Lague, who predeceased her on April 7, 1987. She is survived by her children: Randy Lague and his wife, Suzanne, of Johnson, Rick Lague of Belvidere, Rene Lague and his wife, Cindy, of Troy, Lori Lague Dewing and her husband, Steve, of North Troy, and Julie Webb Lague of Irving, Kentucky; and by many grandchildren. Mrs. Brennan was born in Montréal, Quebec, on September 16, 1913, the daughter of Charles and Victoria (Leonard) Honsinger. She was married to Raymond Brennan, who predeceased her in 1986 after 50 years of marriage. She has spent the last three years as a resident, under the excellent care of the staff of Maple Lane Nursing Home. She worked at the Weyhauser Mill in North Troy for 39 years as a splicer operator until the mill shut down, at which time she worked as an assistant town clerk for the village of North Troy. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, with much of her handiwork going to family members and friends in the community. She is survived by her daughter Anita N. Smith of Palm Bay, Florida; by her grandchildren Kenith S. Smith and his wife, Sherry Nolan-Smith, of Manchester, Connecticut, and Cheryl A. Born June 19, 1931, in Fenner, New York, Mr. Berry was the son of George H. and Hazel Colvin Berry and attended local schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. On May 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Anne Kellum in Maryland. He worked in construction and had been a heavy equipment operator for Arute Brothers and A&R Construction. Most recently, he was owner and operator of the West Eaton Diner. He was a communicant of St. Therese's Catholic Church in Munnsville. He was a member of the Munnsville American Legion Post No. 54 and the Disabled American Veterans. He helped provide support to veterans at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Syracuse. Surviving are his wife, Anne; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Fred Schubert of Cairo, Illinois, and Donna and Zoeb Zavery of Clifton Park, New York; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Wade Berry of Sangerfield, New York, Kevin and Sally Berry of Barton, and Adam and Christie Berry of Clay, New York; a sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Charles Matthew of Eden, Maryland, a brother, Fred Berry, of Oriskany Falls, New York; a sister-in-law, Sandra Berry, of Kissimmee, Florida; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Berry; by two sons, Roger Scott Berry and George Steven Berry; and by a grandson, Ryan Berry. , 76, of Peabody, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his home in Newport. Mr. Busta was the husband of Caroline V. "Lola" (Ziomek) Busta, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. Born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Benson) Busta and had resided in Peabody most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines and Pacific Theater operations prior to his discharge in 1945. He then became a coppersmith and pipefitter working at the Boston, Massachusetts, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Naval yards on nuclear submarines for 27 years prior to his retirement 19 years ago. He then purchased his home in Newport, where he enjoyed maintaining his grounds. He also enjoyed his Vermont lifestyle at his Seymour Lake cottage in Morgan. He had a passion for flying and building aircraft and was a life member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He had a pilot license for several years prior to his retirement. He had been a member and auditor of St. Michael's Society of Peabody and was a member along with his wife of St. Joseph's Church in Peabody. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren. Surviving him besides his wife are two sons, William L. Busta III of Danvers, Massachusetts, and Michael Busta of Salem, Massachusetts; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Frank Britch of Brownington; a brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Pat Busta of Hampton, New Hampshire; four grandchildren: Sara Britch, Carl, Anna, and Daniel Busta; and many nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late William Busta IV. A family Funeral Mass was held June 24 in St. John the Baptist Church in Salem. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.

, 85, of Island Pond died peacefully with family at his bedside on Monday, June 23, 2003, in Leesburg, Florida, his retirement home. Mr. Palmer was firstborn to the late Ephraim C. Palmer and Anna Pearl Cory Palmer on March 20, 1918, in Little Compton, Rhode Island. On May 17, 1943, he married Alice Reynolds, who predeceased him on April 24, 1991. He joined Company No. 1152 of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. He retired from Canadian National Railways on August 29, 1980, after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus third and fourth degrees, St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Island Pond, Elks Lodge No. 1343 of St Johnsbury, and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees Unit No. 66. He was a lifetime member of the UTU and BLE. He is survived by his daughter Ann Marie Couture and her husband, Henri, of Leesburg; by his son Paul C.
