, 65, a former resident of Center Haverhill, N.H., died Saturday evening, Dec. 29, 2001, at his home in Spofford, N.H. He was born Oct. 20, 1936 in Woodsville, N.H., a son of Norman and Corabelle (Clark) Thornton. He was educated in Woodsville schools, and was a 1953 graduate of Woodsville High School. On Sept. 11, 1959, he married Nancy Patten, and they made their home in Center Haverhill. For more than 22 years, Mr. Thornton was a self-employed brick mason throughout the Connecticut River Valley. He worked on the construction of Cottage Hospital and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, and for H.P. Cummings Construction Company and Ware Construction Company. In 1980, the family relocated to Spofford, N.H., where Mr. Thornton worked for 16 years as a corrections officer at the Cheshire County Correctional Facility. Survivors include his wife, Nancy P. Thornton of Spofford, N.H.; a daughter, Laurie Goodnow of Spofford, N.H.; three sons, Richard of Troy, N.H., Norman of Greenfield, N.H., and Kenneth of Rochester, N.H.; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Beverly Doyen of Littleton, N.H., Mildred Winchester of West Chesterfield, N.H., Luvia Byrne of Woodsville, N.H., and Jean Harrington of Barnstead, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Thornton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Haverhill First Congregational Church with the Rev. David Pruitt officiating. of Sanford, Miss., died unexpectedly, Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. She was 71. Nettie was steward at the St. Johnsbury Country Club for two years from 1982-83. Affectionately known by many as "Miss Nettie," her name reflected her gracious manner and her genuine concern for club members. She is survived by three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and, locally, by a first cousin who thought of her more as a sister, Lucille "Lou" Walker of St. Johnsbury (Mrs. R.K. , 64, of 2108 Peach Brook Road, Newbury, Vt., took his last breath Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 29, 1937, in Peabody, Mass., the son of Delmar and Eunice May (Pingree) Ellis. Don was a lifelong member of the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, where he served as an elder; he loved people. He also enjoyed baking bread. He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Robert Ellis, in 1959. Surviving relatives include his wife of 43 years, April R. , 74, of 224 Fox Ridge Road, Littleton, passed away suddenly at his residence, Monday, Dec. 24, 2001. He was born in Walden, Vt., the son of Morton and Clara (Winn) McGoff. He had been a resident of Littleton for the past 29 years. He had worked for the Cabot Creamery in Cabot, Vt., the Kitchener Dairy Farm in Billerica, Mass., Drew's Fruit Farm in Westford, Mass., and the New Hampshire Highway Department, from which he retired 12 years ago. Harold loved farm animals, farming and tractors. Horses were his favorites, and he owned over 30 horses during his lifetime. He loved country fairs, where he spent most of his time watching the horse-pulling events. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kay" McGoff of Littleton; three daughters, April Reinhard of Littleton, Gloria Rathbone of Montpelier, Vt., and Brenda Krol of Littleton; a son, Gary McGoff of Littleton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. , 85, of Hardwick, formerly of Stannard, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Danville, the son of Alfred P. and Anna (Smith) Tousant. As a young child he made his home with the Langmaid family and attended Danville public schools. He married Shirley Virginia Salisbury in East Hartford, Conn., June 9, 1945. Following his education he moved to Connecticut, where he was employed as a farmer's assistant by B.O. Pelton in South Windsor, Conn. In 1952 he and his family returned to Vermont. He purchased a family farm in the town of Stannard, on which he lived for nearly 40 years. During that time he also worked at Brown's Saw Mill in Walden, and for the Vermont Highway Department. Penny was a groundskeeper for the Greensboro Country Club for 11 years, and in the late 1980s he and his wife moved to Hardwick, where he occupied his time mowing lawns. He retired in 1998. Penny was a member of the United Church of Hardwick. He was a past member of the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church, and the executive board of that church. He served as a lister and a selectman for the town of Stannard, and was trail master for the Coles Pond Sledders. He was a devoted family man. He enjoyed the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, their spouses, and his great-grandchildren. Other enjoyments included traveling and snowmobiling. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Shirley; a son, James Tousant and wife Diana of Stannard; three daughters, Jane Johns and husband Roger of Greensboro Bend, Bette Rochette and husband Philip of Morrisville, and Gail Renaud and husband David of Hardwick; a sister, Althea L. Calapietro of Bristol, Conn.; seven grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Francis Delano of Scarborough, Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Alfred Tousant; his mother and step-father, Anna and Joseph Gaudette; and two sisters, Arlene Purrington and Mazelle Delano. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. at the United Church in Hardwick, with the Rev. Dr. June Totten officiating. Burial will follow in the Sanborn Cemetery in East Hardwick. , 75, of 501 Colonial Court in Littleton, died suddenly at her home, Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. Mrs. Matthews was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Seacliff, N.Y., the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Herman) McLaughlin. Prior to moving to Littleton in 1981, she spent most of her life in the Hamptons of Long Island, N.Y., where she and her husband raised their family. She served her community well and was an avid worker at the American Red Cross and volunteer at the Littleton Hospital for over 20 years. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and a member of the Garden Club. Her generosity even went so far as South America, where she frequently sponsored less fortunate children. Family members include three sons, Chris Matthews of Henderson, N.C., Damon Matthews of Remsenburg, N.Y., and John Matthews of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Patty Matthews of Lancaster, N.H., Julie Cuthbert of Aberdeen, Md., and Margaret Dumont of Merritt Island, Fla.; five grandchildren, Abigail, Ian, Barry, Topher and Taylor; one sister, Anne Washbourne of Michigan; several nieces and nephews; two aunts; one uncle; and numerous cousins. , 88, of Summer Street, Groveton, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster after a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 27, 1913, in Ste. Sylvestre, Quebec, Canada, a son of J. James and Margaret (Donovan) Cotter, he had been a resident of Groveton for the past 60 years, coming from East Hereford, Quebec. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Church of Groveton. He was a member of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau Association, the third degree Father Simard Council of the Knights of Columbus, Groveton, and a fourth degree member of the Bishop Bradley Assembly, Lancaster. Before retiring he owned and operated his own family farm. Mr. Cotter is survived by his wife of 59 years, Simonne (Fournier) Cotter of Groveton; six sons, Paul Cotter of Cazenovia, N.Y., Raymond Cotter of West Covina, Calif., Norman Cotter of Groveton, Robert Cotter of Lancaster, Maurice Cotter of Denair, Calif., and Daniel Cotter of Spofford, N.H.; seven daughters, Louise Boothby of Brunswick, Maine, Muriel Hall of Bow, N.H., Mona Steele of Park City, Utah, Lorraine Shepard of Brattleboro, Vt., Pauline Hedberg of Dover, N.H., Susie Riley of Brunswick, Vt., and Lynn Collins of Waterford, Vt.; 32 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Cotton of Ste. Dorothee, Quebec, Canada; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one son, Leo Cotter, Aug. 9, 1997; and two brothers, Edward Cotter and Clement Cotter. , 87, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his home in Sarasota, Fla. He was the owner and president of the Dairy Association Co. Inc., the producers of Bag Balm, a family owned business since 1899. John took over the business in 1934 from his father. In 1984 Bag Balm was the subject of Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" television series and was also featured in a book by Kuralt. The company will remain in the family with his daughter and son-in-law. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Lyndonville. While he was in Sarasota, he attended the First Methodist Church. John Norris possessed a great love of music, from classical to jazz. He played the flute and piccolo, and at one time was a student under the renowned flutist George Barrere. John also taught the flute and piccolo, and has shared his love and interest in music with his students, and most assuredly with his family. At one time during the 1930s he had a small orchestra. For over 40 years he was a member of the Lyndonville Military Band, for which he played the piccolo and for a time served as the director. From 1963 to 1973, John was president of Lyndon Institute. He was an avid horseman, leading many parades in Lyndonville. He also enjoyed playing golf, but, as he very often would say with a smile, he was a much better horseman and musician. John Norris is survived by a daughter, Barbara N. Allen of Seaford, Del. There will be visitation hours Thursday, Jan. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota, Fla. In Lyndonville there will be visitation hours Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Woods-Trefren & Pearsons Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Lyndonville with the Rev. Donald Vincent officiating. Interment will be in Hanover, N.H. in the spring.

, 85, of Ellsworth Hill Road, Wentworth, N.H., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home. He was born in Laconia Aug. 12, 1916, the son of Claude and Flora Mae (Wilkins) Smith. Mr. Smith attended Wentworth schools and was a lifetime resident of Wentworth. He was employed by St. Johnsbury Trucking for 28 years and retired in 1985. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 597. Mr. Smith was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the Moosehillock Lodge of Masons No. 63 for over 40 years, a 38-year member of the American Legion Post 76 in Rumney, N.H., and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Connecticut Valley Mt. Mooselauke Chapter. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, June E. (Stevens) Smith, in 1998; a son, Glen S. Smith, in 1962; and a daughter, Ruth S. Gilbert, in 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Mary G. Wright of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Anne C. Kinne and Susan M. Smith, both of Wentworth; three sons, Gene S. Smith Sr. of Lincoln, N.H., Richard I. , 69, of Holton Park, Lancaster, N.H., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, after a sudden illness. Mr. Aldrich was born in Whitefield, March 10, 1932, the son of George Milton and Agnes (Truland) Aldrich. In 1944 his family moved to Lancaster, where he has lived for most of his lifetime. He was a 1950 graduate of Lancaster Academy, and he also earned a degree at Burdette College in Boston, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. For 33 years he was employed with the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1994. For seven years he had been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Whitefield, and will be remembered as a helpful neighbor. He was a communicant of All Saints Church, Lancaster, and a 4th degree member of the Bradley Council No. 1624. Family members include his wife, Sylvia (Evans) Aldrich of Lancaster; five children, Sara A. Spinelli and husband Peter C. of Campton, N.H., Nan L. Waldo and husband Channing of Lincoln, N.H., Christopher J. Aldrich and wife Lorna of Groveton, Roger M. Aldrich and companion Tina Therrien of Groveton, and Dennis J. Aldrich of Lancaster; a brother, Dean Aldrich and wife Vivienne of Concord, Mass.; and seven grandchildren. 80, of Brainerd Street in Danville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born May 28, 1921, in Montpelier, the daughter of Ella (Comstock) Fifield. She attended schools in Randolph, Vt., and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Vermont in 1942. She married Sgt. Rupert E. White of Starkboro, Vt., in 1942. He was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Fi worked for an advertising agency in New York City, N.Y., before returning to Vermont to teach Latin and French in Danville for more than 20 years. She was a member of the All Saints Anglican Church. She is survived by her sister, Mary F. Bisson of Lyndonville. Services will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, at 9:30 a.m., at the Dowsers Hall in Danville. , 73, of St. Johnsbury, passed away in St. Johnsbury Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002. He was born in Lowell, Dec. 28, 1928, the son of Howard and Ruth (Paronto) Cutting. Wayne was raised in Lowell and worked on the family farm. He first worked as a truck driver for an oil supply company, then was manager for the wholesale food distributor Independent Foods in Burlington for 15 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a car salesman for Ronnie's Auto Sales in Lyndonville, never missing a day's pay. He married Lorraine Sanville, July 15, 1956, and at that time they moved to St. Johnsbury, where they raised their family. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially sports. He coached Babe Ruth baseball for three years. He also enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. Wayne is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his children, Kathleen Cutting of St. Johnsbury Center, Michael Cutting and wife Bonnie of St. Johnsbury, and Kim Verge and husband Daniel of Newark; his grandchildren, Daniel and Amanda Verge, and Courtney Cutting; and his sisters, Joyce Hodgeman and husband Thurston, Ilene Richardson, and Sadie Willey and husband Dale, all of Lowell. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Ruth Cutting; his brother Ralph; and his sister Beverly. Herbert and Grace (Hill) Stahler, she lived in Sandusky, Ohio, for many years before moving to Bristol and then to Southington. She was an executive secretary at the former New Departure-Hyatt in Sandusky, Ohio, retiring in 1974. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Bristol, Conn., the Bristol Senior Citizen Center, and AARP. She is survived by one sister, Marjorie Zamoic of Meriden, Conn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Mildred Stahler of East Barnet; two sisters-in-law, Norma Stahler and Bernice Stahler, both of Lyndonville; a cousin and lifelong friend, Evelyn Pillsbury and husband Philip of Hanover, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. , 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Country Village Health Care Center in Lancaster, where she has been a resident since 1997. Mrs. Trottier was born in St. Johnsbury, Oct. 21, 1910. She was raised on the family farm on Pond Hill in Lunenburg but had been a resident of Gilman for most of her life. For 19 years she was employed with the Millet Corp., Gilman. Family members include a son, Leon Trottier of Newbury, Vt.; a daughter, Marcella Hall of Fairfax, Vt.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. , 96, passed away at the Lafayette Nursing Facility in Franconia, N.H., Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, due to complications of an extended illness. She was born Dec. 3, 1905, in West Milan, Vt., a daughter of Harry W. and Ethel (Hart) Burgess. She loved to knit mittens, scarves, hats and socks for her many nieces and nephews, and also enjoyed crocheting and making quilts and afghans. Poor eyesight prevented her from continuing her hobby in later years. Myrtle and her late husband George H. Knapp, who passed away July 23, 1986, owned and operated a poultry farm in Littleton for over 20 years. She was also a member of the Littleton First United Methodist Church. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Two sisters and four brothers predeceased her. Graveside committal services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m., at the family plot in Glenwood Cemetery, Littleton, with the Rev. Thomas Golden officiating.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, and had worked at Brightlook Hospital and Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. Other interests included membership in the UE234 Retirees (Fairbanks) and the Country Club Homemakers of Joe's Brook (past president), and all her special friends and family. On Jan. 1, 1943, she married Henry Lamont, who survives her in Danville. , 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, following a brief illness. She was born in Derby, Vt., July 1, 1919, the daughter of Charles Arthur and Hazel Mae (Blake) Briggs. She attended Lyndon Normal School and received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Lyndon State College. Mrs. Whitehill taught in various Ryegate schools and from 1970 until her retirement in 1982, she taught at Blue Mountain Union School in Wells River. She was a 57-year member of the First Congregational Church of McIndoe Falls United Church of Christ, a member and served as president for many years of the McIndoe Falls Lady Society, a member of the Vermont Retired Teachers Association and Caledonia Central Retired Teachers Association, and was also a member and past president of Corinthian Chapter 42 Order of the Eastern Star in Wells River. She married Denzil W. Whitehill June 17, 1942, and he predeceased her Oct. 24, 1998. She was also predeceased by two half-sisters, Avis Briggs Leach and Peggy Briggs. Survivors include a son, Denzil John and wife Linda Whitehill of Barnet; and a daughter, Pauline Agnes Parton of Burlington; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Frederick Briggs of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was born in St. Johnsbury Sept. 12, 1914, the daughter of Glenn G. and Almira (Perrigard) Woods. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1933, she married Herbert F. Oliver, April 25, 1937; he predeceased her July 29, 1991. Mrs. Oliver held several jobs in St. Johnsbury, retiring in 1981 after working at Hovey's Shops for 14 years. She was a member of the St. Johnsbury Emblem Club, the St. Johnsbury chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the St. Johnsbury Women's Club, and a lifelong member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Her happiest times were those spent with her family and her friends, because they meant everything to her. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Maureen and Stephen Mintz of Syracuse, N.Y., Charla and Maurice Drown Jr. of Latham, N.Y., and Rosalene and Michael Fournier of Lunenburg, Vt.; a brother, Gordon G. Woods and wife Dorothea of Burlington; a half-brother, Melvin G. Woods and wife Tari of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jessica and Joseph Mintz, Laura, Leonard, Aaron and Kara Drown, and Jacob and Lydia Fournier; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. , 42, of Lyndon, died in a car accident in Minnesota, Thursday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2002. He was born Feb. 25, 1959, in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., the son of Howard J. and the late Joan L. (Sandstrom) Sackett. John was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1977. A cross country skier and racer, John narrowly missed making the 1984 U.S. Olympic cross country ski team. He started the Nordic ski program at Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke during the 1980s and coached students at Lyndon Institute as well. He was an avid mountain biker and was known to be one of the area's greatest athletes. He was the manager of the Village Sport Shop in Lyndonville for many years. John loved his family, and people, and was thought of as an Olympic Gold Dad. He was a role model for many, many area youth and adults in Vermont as well as the entire country. He will be greatly missed by all. She was born in Johnson, Vt., Dec. 6, 1928, the daughter of Ranald and Madelyn (Hooper) Davis. Marilyn married Merrill "Bud" E. Locke Nov. 8, 1947. Marilyn was well known for her cooking and baking skills in the home, and while raising her family of five sons, she pursued her culinary career, serving as a chef at several Stowe restaurants for a number of years. She then became the director of food services for Johnson State College, a position she held for 19 years. After her retirement, Marilyn remained very active and became passionate about breeding and raising sheep. She also applied her same imagination and creative talents of cooking to a new venue, that of creating decorative crafts and ornaments, and combined that with very talented with needle point and crocheting, to make memorable and keepsake items that will be cherished by all who now have her work. She is survived by her husband, Bud; her mother, Mrs. Madelyn Davis of Copley Manor, Morrisville; four sons and their wives, Kenneth M. and Pamela of Johnson, James A. and Betty of Springvale, Maine, Jon M. and Debbie, and Lauren A. and Cindy, all of Hyde Park; a sister, Barbara King and husband Haven of Milton, Vt.; three brothers and their wives, Albert "Pat" and Virginia of Brownington, Vt., Walter "Shiner" and Marlene of New Milford, Conn., and Roger "Pop" Davis of Wheelock, Vt.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a daughter-in-law, Annette Locke of California. He served in the World War II Pacific Theatre in Company B, 711th tank battalion. He was wounded at Okinawa and discharged at technician 4th grade. Maurice was a life member of both DAV Chapter 9 and VFW Post 793; was retired from Fairbanks Scales, and suffered a stroke in 1986. He had a passion for photography and loved his time spent at camp on Shadow Lake in Concord. He had been active in both the St. Johns and Fairbanks credit unions. He was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Pauline Robert; six children, Jacqueline Larmay of Springfield, Vt., Richard A. 78, longtime Sheffield resident, died peacefully at his home Monday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2002. He was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Lyndon, the son of the late Charles H. and Bessie M. (Crandall) Whitcomb. He was a 1942 graduate of Orleans High School. Following school he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II. He worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company as a truck driver for 27 years. Vern was a member of Masonic Lodge Crescent Lodge 66 F & AM, the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville, the Vermont Garden Railway Association, and the Sheffield Federated Church, where he served as usher, deacon and handyman. He was very active in his community, serving as chairman of the Sheffield Field Days for nearly 30 years and was sexton of the William-Dexter Cemetery for 15 years. He also plowed snow from his neighbors' dooryards for many years. He enjoyed building houses with his family, working in his gardens, and working with his model G scale trains, which ran around his pond and through his gardens. He was always willing to help his friends, neighbors and anyone in need. The son of George Gordon and Mildred Melvina (Heartz) Cameron, George was born June 8, 1927 in Woodsville, N.H. He was a machinist for many years at Vermont Tap & Die in Lyndonville. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Barbara Ann Cleary April 3, 1948. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family was very special, and he especially enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George had a fondness for automobiles and was quite knowledgeable, especially as a mechanic. George is survived by his wife, Barbara A. of Lyndonville; four daughters, Paula J. Edmunds and husband Allyn of Lyndon Center, Suzy A. North and husband Randy of Cabot, Judith M. Duford and husband Michael of West Jordan, Utah, and Brenda Lacroix and husband Louis of St. Johnsbury; a son, Richard G. 81, of South Wheelock, and formerly of Ansonia, Conn., died Tuesday evening, Jan. 22, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born in Ansonia, Conn., Feb. 24, 1920, the son of the late Lawrence and Mary Ellen (McGrath) Blake. After high school he entered the CCC's, and then worked as a machinist before entering the U.S. Navy, serving in the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II. George operated Blake Bus Service in Ansonia, Conn., for 40 years. He was a 60-year member of the Webster Hose, Hook and Ladder Company 3 of Ansonia, serving as captain. Later he was a member of the fire police in Ansonia. He was a life member of the VFW of Ansonia, a member of the Ansonia Lion's Club, the American Legion, the Caledonia County Democratic Committee, and a former member of the Winter Wanderers snowmobile club. He was an avid snowmobiler. In 1987, after retirement, he and his wife Ruth moved to South Wheelock to enjoy the snowmobiling and solitude of the Northeast Kingdom. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth (LaBrake) Blake of South Wheelock, whom he married June 12, 1943; three sons, George Blake Jr. and wife Diane of Seymour, Conn., Kenneth Blake and wife Caroline of Middlefield, Conn., and Kevin Blake and wife Karen of Ansonia, Conn.; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Brian, Kelley and Lindsay; his brother, Lawrence Blake of West Haven, Conn.; his sister, Josephine Walsh of New Port Richey, Fla.; and nieces and nephews. He was born Sept. 12, 1939, in West Burke, a son of Gordon and Esther (Comett) Drew. On Feb. 20, 1965, he married Marilyn Duckless who survives him. Mr. Drew was a service technician for the Converse Company in Orleans when he retired Sept. 20, 2001, after 20 dedicated years. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Drew of Barton; brothers and sisters, Reynolds LaBay of Westfield, Mass., Curtis LaBay of Lyndon, Elaine Willey of West Burke, and Loraine Newland and husband Winston of West Burke; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph LaBay. Drew was a beekeeper and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and working out of doors. Friends may call this evening, Jan. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton, where funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. , 74, of Lyndonville and formerly of West Burke, died suddenly, Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2002. She was born in Lyndon, Dec. 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Gerald H. and Abbie P. (Caswell) Tanner. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1946. On March 6, 1947, Carolyn married Neal G. Weed. Carolyn was a member of the West Burke Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for several years. She and her husband Neal were members of the Yankee Watters Travelers Club 150 of East Burke, with which they enjoyed many camping trips throughout the United States and Canada. She had also been a member of the Moose Club of St. Johnsbury. Bowling was her favorite sport, and she bowled on the same team for 32 years. Known affectionately as Nana, she enjoyed raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nurturing them as they grew. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her son, Kermit Weed and wife Gail of West Burke; four daughters, Nancy Ferno and husband Carlyle "Skip" of Sun City, Ariz., Priscilla Aldrich and husband Gilbert of West Burke, Judy Rice and husband Richard of Sutton, and Carol Ann Buzzi and fianc? Raised in Fall River, he served for a time in the U.S. Navy. he resided in Guildhall, Vt., and later moved to Lancaster when he married Michelle Marie Patnaude, Sept. 26, 1992. He enjoyed music and coin collecting. 93, a longtime Vermont educator and Danville resident, and former superintendent of the Caledonia Central Supervisory Union, died after a brief illness, Saturday morning, Jan. 26, 2002. Llewellyn was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Fair Haven, Vt., to Owen and Catherine (Jones) Roberts. He graduated from Fair Haven High School in 1925, Middlebury College in 1929 with a bachelor of arts degree in English, and later earned his master's degree in education from the University of Vermont. His professional career spanned 48 years. He taught high school in Indian Lake, N.Y., during the 1929-1930 school year, was the teacher-principal-superintendent in Danby and Mount Tabor, Vt., from 1930-1936, principal of Wallingford High School in Wallingford, Vt., from 1936-1943, and ended his professional career in 1977 after 34 years as superintendent of the Caledonia Central Supervisory Union. During his retirement, he served in the roles of auditor and lister for the town of Danville, and worked with the Area Agency on Aging. He was a member and former deacon of the Danville Congregational, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wallingford, the Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity at Middlebury College, the Retired Teachers Association and the Vermont Superintendents Association. Llewellyn is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Hamilton) Roberts; six children, Priscilla Carpenter of Burlington, Prudence Westerberg and husband Frederick of Fryeburg, Maine, Polly Rowland of Burlington, John Roberts and wife Linda of Raleigh, N.C., Judith Roberts of Waterbury Center, and Jeanne Adams and husband John of Terrell, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sinah Roberts of Fair Haven, and Elizabeth Smith of Framingham, Mass. He was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Lyndon, the son of the late Frank and Martha (Shaw) Carr. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He liked sports, bowling and loved pets. He was made Citizen of the Year by the NRA. He had worked for the railroad and retired from Fairbanks. , 61, a longtime resident of Maple Street, Bethlehem, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Littleton Regional Hospital, after suffering injuries from being hit by a car on Main Street in Littleton. Marilyn was born in Jersey City, N.J., March 8, 1940, the daughter of John and Mary Ambrose. She grew up in nearby West New York, N.J., where, in high school, she met the love of her life, Raymond Peter Zolton. They were married June 11, 1960. Before turning 25, she was the proud mother of three children, Marc, Scott and Linda. Marilyn graduated with high honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., with a bachelor of arts in 1971, and a master of arts in 1972, having majored in American studies. She later obtained a masters in library science from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. For many years she worked at Baker & Taylor Co. in Somerville, N.J., before retiring in her late 40s and moving to Bethlehem with her husband. As an avid reader, lover of the arts, and world traveler, Marilyn was fortunate enough to live the life she chose to live. She published two art-travel guides with her husband as co-writer. When not enjoying long walks with her constant companion, Ray, throughout their cherished North Country environs, Marilyn kept busy by attending three different local book-discussion groups, a music appreciation class, frequent concerts and movies, assisting the Senior Center with Meals on Wheels, and knitting sweaters for needy children. She is survived by her husband of 411/2 years, Raymond Zolton of Bethlehem; three children, Marc Zolton of Portland, Ore., Scott Zolton of Denver, Colo., and Linda Cruise of Richmond, Vt.; her mother, Mary Ambrose of Pacifica, Calif.; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Jane Ambrose of Pacifica, Calif.; son-in-law James Cruise; daughter-in-law Margaret Barletta; and three grandchildren, Brendan and Brigid Cruise of Richmond, Vt., and Curtis Zolton Barletta of Brattleboro, Vt. Joan was born in Lebanon, N.H., July 11, 1936, the daughter of Evelyn Gardner Henderson and Hubert Donald Henderson. She lived in White River Junction, Poultney, Walden and Castleton, Vt., until finally moving to Brevard, N.C., in 1993 with her husband, Winston H. Churchill Jr. She was active in the Sacred Heart Ladies Guild, including serving as president of the guild, telephone chairperson and part of the Arts and Crafts group of the guild. Joan was a valued assistant at social functions of the Jack Driscoll Council, Knights of Columbus, Brevard, N.C.; served as usher at Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years; was a Red Cross volunteer for several years and was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year 2001 in Blood Services. While living in Walden she was a long-term member as well as vice president of the Walden Home Dem association. Joan is survived by her husband of 45 years, Winston H. 81, died Saturday morning, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Courville Nursing Home, Nashua, N.H. Mr. Bowles was born in Littleton, Oct. 29, 1920, the son of Harold Little and Caroline (Brownlie) Bowles. Raised in Franconia, he was a graduate of Dow Academy, Franconia, and attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1942. He was a member of the ATO fraternity. Mr. Bowles served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a supply officer, and later attained the rank of Lt. Commander. In 1947 he married Shirley Murphy. He was a longtime resident of Lancaster and for 36 years was the district manager in northern New Hampshire and Vermont for the NH-VT Blue Cross and Blue Shield. While in Lancaster he served on the Lancaster and White Mountains Regional High School boards for several years and was a member of the Lancaster Zoning Board and the Lancaster Development Corporation. Mr. Bowles was a past president of Rotary and a member of the VFW, the Prospect Ski Club, and the Lancaster Historical Society. He was a former member of the American Legion and the Elks, and for many years he served as a director and secretary of the Lancaster Fair. He was a communicant of All Saints Church, Lancaster. Family members include his wife Shirley (Murphy) Bowles of 9 Bartemus Trail, Unit 108, Nashua; a daughter, Cheryl (Bowles) Staab; a son-in-law, Charles J. Staab of Nashua; and two granddaughters, Heather Elizabeth Staab and Kathryn Leigh Staab, both of Nashua. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Barbara Ann Cleary April 3, 1948. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family was very special to him, and he especially enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George had a fondness for automobiles and was quite knowledgeable, especially as a mechanic. George is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Cameron of Lyndonville; five children, Paula J. Edmunds and husband Allyn of Lyndon Center, Richard G. Cameron and wife Jane of St. Johnsbury, Suzy A. North and husband Randy of Cabot, Judith M. , died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. Mr. Stevens was born in Hillsboro, N.H., the son of Howard B. Stevens and Buella Kimball Stevens. He attended Hillsboro public school and high school. As a young man he worked for the Shell Oil Co. and became supervisor of their training station. In 1939 he moved to Leominster, Mass., and started a filling station and auto maintenance business, which he ran until he retired. Following the death of his wife, Ruth Mitchell Stevens, in 1996, he moved to Lyndon Center to live with his son James. He loved to play cards, golf and billiards with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all. He leaves his son, Dr. James C. Stevens and wife Nicole of Lyndon Center; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Harry A. Mitchell of Leominster, Mass.; and a cousin, Marijane Jones of Worcester, Mass. There are no calling hours and the funeral will be private. She was born in Monroe, March 27, 1934, and had lived in North Haverhill for the last 10 years. She held several jobs, the last being in Lincoln, N.H. Retired for the last 12 years, she spent her time enjoying many different crafts, such as crocheting, and producing oil paintings for her family. She took great pride in planting her flower gardens for passers-by to enjoy. Her lifetime was devoted to educating her children and grandchildren about wildlife, and she enjoyed feeding the birds. , 78, of 290 Airport Road, Lyndonville, died at home Wednesday evening, Jan. 30, 2002. She was born in Lyndonville, April 14, 1922, the daughter of Herman and Verna (McDowell) Deyette. She married Donald A. Rainey July 13, 1957. She was a 1940 graduate of Lyndon Institute and remained close to her alma mater all her life. She served on the board of directors of the Alumni Association and served on her class reunion committee. She volunteered for many special Lyndon Institute projects. The Raineys returned to their native Lyndonville in October 1984. For 30 years they lived on Chestnut Street in Manchester, N.H. Prior to retiring, Pauline had been employed at the New Hampshire Department of Public Safety in Concord, and had previously worked at Stanley Home Products. Pauline was active in the Lyndon Senior Action Center. She loved the ocean, playing card games, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Donald of Lyndonville; five children, Marshall Newland Jr. of Concord, N.H., Daniel Newland of Lyndonville, Audrey Smith and husband Jack of Wheelock, Dwight Rainey and wife Bonny of Muskegon, Mich., Douglas Rainey and wife Marcia of Lyndonville; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bruce Norcross of Wheelock and Robert Norcross of St. Johnsbury; two sisters, Beverly Moffatt of St. Johnsbury and Ethel Crane of Washington, N.H.; and a stepsister, Connie Goodwin of Nevada. She was predeceased by two sisters, Reba Littel and Norma Delisle, and by her parents. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home in Lyndonville. The family will gather for committal services Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. The casket will be closed at 12:45 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to either Caledonia Home Health Care, P.O. , 61, of 365 Fisk Road, Hardwick, Mass., died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her home after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Richard A. Patch; three sons, Alan of the Gilbertville section of Hardwick, Mass., James of Barre, Mass., and Stephen Patch of Hardwick, Mass.; two daughters, Sherry Patch of Hardwick, Mass., and Joyce Lame of Ware, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren. She was born in Glover, Vt., daughter of the late Neil and Aris (Powers) Allen, but lived in Barre, Mass., for 10 years and the Gilbertville, Mass., and Hardwick, Mass., area for 20 years. She graduated from the Peacham Academy in Peacham, Vt. She was a nurse's aide at the Hilltop Rest Home in the Gilbertville section of Hardwick, Mass., for 20 years. She also worked at Rutland Heights Hospital and did foster care in her home for children and the elderly for many years. Her funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, Main Street, Gilbertville, Mass. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Ware, Mass.

88, of Route 18 in Waterford, died late Friday evening, Feb. 1, 2002, at a hospital in Ocala, Fla. He was born in Levis, Quebec, Canada, Jan. 16, 1914, the son of Onisime and Rose Hebelle (Lambert) Begin. On June 1, 2001, he and his wife Marie celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury, Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Fourth degree honors will be bestowed outside the church prior to and after the Mass. Burial will be in May at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Visiting hours will be concluded with an evening prayer service to which members of the Knights of Columbus are encouraged to attend. , 74, of South Main Street, Peacham, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in the company of her only daughter, listening to a favorite story. She was born April 25, 1927, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of John Finlay and Christine (Raymond) McPherson, and was a graduate of Skidmore College. She married the Rev. Stanford G. Blankinship Jr. in 1950 and was a longtime area resident, school volunteer and member of the Peacham Congregational Church. A true pioneer in area health care and hospice, Joan was a nurse administrator and founding director of the Caledonia Home Health Agency. She served on many local, statewide, and national health-related boards and initiatives, including the Visiting Nurse Alliances of Vermont and New Hampshire, the Alzheimer's Association, the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, "Ladies First," a breast cancer prevention project, the National Council of the National Health Service Corps, the Vermont Ethics Network, and the Board of Directors of the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium. Joan was a justice of the peace and a tireless advocate for home health care, children's, women's, and elders' issues throughout her life. Despite her many professional accomplishments, Joan was happiest surrounded by her family and friends, traveling, card-sharking, entertaining, singing and laughing. She loved music, sang vigorously with the North Country Chorus and in any church choir or living room sing-along that would have her, especially later in life. She was also an accomplished artist, whether it was decorating, stenciling, painting the Vermont countryside and the coast of her beloved Louds Island, Maine with oils or watercolors, rug braiding or hooking. A proud member of the Historical Society of Early American Decorators, Joan loved to create and express her bottomless artistic soul with glorious results. Most of all, Joan loved her family, and never tired of telling them so. She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. Stanford G. Blankinship Jr., Oct. 4, 1993; one sister, Martha Nunn; and one brother, Simon "Sandy" John McPherson. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Ide and husband, Sen. Robert Ide of Peacham; three sons and their wives, John B. and Beth Blankinship of Cornwall, N.Y., Stanford "Bones" and Syndi (Zook) Blankinship of South Burlington, and Benjamin M. and Sara (Swan) Blankinship of San Francisco, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jacob Ide of Burlington, Elizabeth Ide of Washington, D.C., Meredith Blankinship and Peter Blankinship of Cornwall, N.Y., and a special niece, Anne McPherson Emers of East Hardwick. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Blankinship residence Friday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m., in the Peacham Congregational Church. The Rev. Rebecca Werner Maccini will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Charles Woodman of Stillwater United Presbyterian Church, Stillwater, N.Y. , 101, of Stewartstown, N.H., passed away at her Riverside home, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. Born Sept. 9, 1900, in Columbia, N.H., she was the daughter of Darwin and Jennie (Hurd) Blakely. Mrs. Condon attended school in Canaan, Vt. In December of 1921, she was married to the late Arthur Condon. Mrs. Condon lived in Stewartstown her entire life and as Stewartstown's oldest resident, had been presented the Boston Post cane in 2001. She enjoyed spending time at home. Mrs. Condon was a great lover of cats, and enjoyed crocheting, quilting and tending to her numerous plants. Her family includes a daughter, Virginia Tirrell of Canaan, Vt.; seven grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. W. Bruce and Jessie Tibbetts of Beecher Falls, Vt., Sandra T. She was born in Colebrook N.H., Feb. 18, 1928, the daughter of Leon and Dorothy (Riley) Knapp. Theda is survived by one son, Calvin Masure of Bellows Falls; three daughters, Erica Steward of Fort Meyers, Fla., Brenda Masure of Bellows Falls, Vt., and Patty Masure of Hatfield, Mass.; one brother, Gordon Knapp of New Orleans, La.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. , 88, passed away at her home at the Canterbury Inn, 46 Cherry St., St. Johnsbury, Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, following an extended illness. She was the widow of the late W. Taylor Morrison. She was born in Flat Rock, Ill., the daughter of the late Grover C. Fuller and Jeannette (Phillippi) Fuller. She spent her youth and raised her family in Crawford County, Ill., resettled for many years in Canon City, Colo., then moved to St. Johnsbury in 1997. She graduated valedictorian of Palestine High School and was a graduate of Terre Haute Commercial College. She later earned an associate arts degree from Lincoln Trail College at the age of 58. She worked for the state of Illinois in Springfield, and in various secretarial and administrative positions throughout her life, and was dedicated to her church and her family. She was an avid reader, student of the Bible, quiltress, seamstress, gardener, volunteer, and an active member and supporter of the Gideons International Association. Her personal faith in Christ was an enduring force in her life. She leaves two daughters, Darla Jean Morrison of Canon City, Colo., and Cathy Morrison Swain of Lyndonville; four grandchildren, David Barnes of Southbridge, Mass., Beth Jordan of Denver, Colo., Julia Swain of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ethan Swain of Lyndonville; and two great-grandchildren, Hope and Anna Barnes. Friends may call Wednesday, Feb. 6, from noon to 2 p.m., at the East Lyndon Chapel on Red Village Road in Lyndonville. Following visiting hours, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel, friends are also invited to join her family and church community for a time of celebration of her life. There will also be visitation and a funeral service at the Pulliam Funeral Home in Robinson, Ill., Saturday, Feb. 9, with burial to follow the service in the family plot in the Robinson Cemetery. , 75, of East St. Johnsbury, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Gardner, Mass., Sept. 7, 1926, the son of Clifford S. and Mila A. (Goss) Patenaude. He married Edith Hanson, June 17, 1950, in Hardwick, Mass. Wayne was educated in the Hopedale, Mass. schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Stockbridge School of Agriculture in 1945. The Patenaudes purchased the Carl and Florence Wark Farm in East St. Johnsbury in 1963. Wayne was a passionate steward of the land all of his life. He advocated conservation and loved his Jersey cows and his John Deere tractors. Wayne served as a deacon at the Third Congregational Church of East St. Johnsbury; was a lifelong member of the Grange and served on many Vermont State Grange committees. He was also on the Vermont Dairy Industry Commission, the Governor's Growth Commission, the Vermont Farm Bureau and the County Road Commission. Wayne received the Wallace Award presented by Vermont Farm Bureau in 1991 for outstanding contribution to agriculture; and the John Bailey Dunne conservation award presented by the Vermont Land Trust in 1988. He is survived by his wife Edith; their six children, Virginia and husband Edwin Allen of East St. Johnsbury, Kathryn and husband Stan Fenoff of Danville, Deborah and husband Michael Chase of Farmington, Maine, Burt and wife Patty Patenaude of East St. Johnsbury, Janette and husband Maurice Gingue of Barnet, Arthur and wife Karen Patenaude of East St. Johnsbury; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Perry MacNevin of Hopedale, Mass.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wesley and Phyllis Hanson, and sister-in-law Jeanne Hanson, all of Hardwick, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury, Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. The family invites you to a time of sharing following the service, in the vestry. Christina had been employed since 1995 by Dartmouth Medical School as a system administrator. She was very fond of arts and crafts, cross stitching, stuffed bears, and her famous Christmas balls. On Sept. 3, 1994, she married Ben Stuecklen, who survives her in Barnet. Other survivors include a brother, John and wife Teresa Manovich of Linden, Va.; a sister, Nancy Allen of Fairfax, Va.; father-in-law Klaus and wife Jeanne Stuecklen of Ryegate; two nieces, Danielle Nicole Manovich and Shauna Taylor, both of Linden, Va.; several Canadian relatives, and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Elsa Manovich. Funeral services will be held at the Peacham Congregational Church, Thursday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m., with the Rev. , 88, of Guildhall, passed away at home Sunday evening, Feb. 3, 2002, after an extended illness. She made her home with her daughter and family, Geraldine and Albert Tetreault. Mrs. Kennedy was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of George and Ellen (Goulet) Harbour. She attended schools in Worcester, where she continued to reside until her marriage to Herbert S. Kennedy in 1938. During Mrs. Kennedy's years of residence in Massachusetts, she worked at designing and making clothes, her greatest enjoyment. She also performed as a singer, often utilizing her wonderful voice in subsequent years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gorham, N.H. She served in the Latter-day Saint Temple in Washington, D.C., in 1988. She also served in various capacities working with youth organizations in the church. Pauline is survived by her children, Richard L. Kennedy of Holliston, Mass., Geraldine I. Tetreault of Guildhall, Vt., Martin Kennedy of Quinton, Va., Claudia M. Kennedy of Virginia; a sister, Kathleen Swenson of North Carolina; 31 grandchildren, and 41 great-granchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert; and siblings William Harbour, Louise Pickett, Patricia Vile, Maria Solberg, Sandy Kennedy and Peggy Morrissey. A visiting hour will be held Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
