James H. Armstrong

, 80, of Derby died suddenly on February 21, 2002, at his home. Mr. Armstrong was born October 31, 1921, in Bangor, Kentucky, a son of Dorsie and Alice (Wyatt) Armstrong. He entered the U.S. Army on July 15, 1942, and was honorably discharged on December 5, 1945. He served his country during World War II. On May 1, 1969, he married Dorothy (Blake) Waterman, who predeceased him on May 12, 1999. He was a taxi cab driver and security guard for an appliance manufacturing company in Mansfield, Ohio. He enjoyed tinkering around the house, feeding the birds, collecting knickknacks of birds, watching baseball games on television, and talking about politics. He is survived by the following children: James A. Armstrong of Akron, Ohio, Joann Sowders of Winterhaven, Florida, and Inez Williamson of Lakeland, Florida; by 13 grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; by two great-great-grandchildren; by a brother, Junior Armstrong, of Mansfield, Ohio; and by stepdaughter Gail (Waterman) Dondero of Coventry. He was predeceased by the following brothers and sisters: Charles, Adrian, William, Lonnie, and Pearl. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 27, at Curtis-Britch Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Darrell Muelhauser officiating. , 77, of Brownington, beloved wife of Francis Davignon, died suddenly February 19, 2002, in Newport. Mrs. Davignon was born on June 19, 1924, in North Troy, a daughter of Gerald and Beth (Norris) Pettengill. She is a graduate of Newport Center High School. On June 16, 1945, she married Francis Davignon, who survives her. She was a devoted housewife and mother and owned and operated the family farm with her husband for 54 years. She enjoyed writing poetry, painting, reading, and league bowling, where she won many trophies. She held memberships with St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans, Farm Bureau of Orleans County, Orleans Grange, and the Daughters of Isabella. Besides her husband of 56 years, Francis Davignon, she is survived by her children: David and his wife, Kathy, of Walpole, New Hampshire; Gerald "Gary" and his wife, Jeanine, of Brownington Center, William and his wife, Karen, of Colchester, Karl of Westfield, Larry and his wife, Yvette, of Barton, and Nancy Gonyaw and her husband, Lee, and Diane Collier and her husband, Mike, all of Hardwick; by 11 grandchildren; by eight great-grandchildren; by a brother, Richard G. Pettengill, of Boston, Massachusetts; and by a sister, Dorothy Barlow, of Newport Center. Funeral services were held Friday, February 22, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Charles Davignon and the Reverend Pat Forman concelebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be held at St. Theresa's Cemetery in Orleans. Bertha Edith (Cloutier) Sedita

, 59, of Loveland, Colorado, died on February 5, 2002, after fighting the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis. She finally succumbed to it after a brave battle of 25 years. Mrs. Sedita was born in Barton on May 19, 1942, to Severin and Rose Marie (Vandal) Cloutier. She attended St. Paul's School for eight years followed by four years at Barton Academy, graduating in 1961. During her years at the high school she was active in many usual school activities, including the school's cheerleading team in her senior year. For a period of time after graduation she was employed by various concerns in Barton and Newport. She moved to Santa Monica, California, in 1963 to be with her brothers James and Raymond. She found employment with Lear Jet Incorporated in that city by the sea. During this period of time she met Salvatore "Sam" Sedita of Buffalo, New York, and on June 24, 1967, they were married at St. Paul's Church in Barton. She and her husband then lived in Denver, Colorado, and St. Louis, Missouri, for a number of years while he was employed by Trans World Airlines, and she fulfilled her enjoyable duties as a housewife and mother of two lovely girls. After retirement they returned to Colorado and purchased a new retirement home in the town of Loveland, about 50 miles north of Denver. She is survived by her husband; by two daughters, Angelina Sedita of New York City and Nicole Sedita of Denver; by five brothers: James and Raymond of Los Angeles and San Francisco, Regent of Florida, Norman of Reno, Nevada, and Robert of Houston, Texas; and by two sisters, Rita Kimball of Florida and Martha Brown of Burlington. She was predeceased by her parents, Severin in 1966 and Rose in 1991; and by her oldest brother, Gaston, who died in Houston in 1998. Arrangements for cremation services were completed followed by a private family closing ceremony. At her request her ashes will ultimately be scattered over her beloved Colorado mountains. Nan Hui "Ellie" Greenwood

, 60, of Newport died February 18, 2002, in Newport after a brave battle with cancer. Mrs. Greenwood was born on January 10, 1942, in Taegue, South Korea, the daughter of Cha Won and Pok Nan (Son) Ku. She married Maynard Greenwood, who survives her. She was employed for several years at Columbia Forest Products, Slalom Ski Wear, and Bogner U.S.A. as a seamstress and more recently as a commercial home seamstress. She loved spending time with children, her pet birds, and her dog Foxy. She also enjoyed gardening. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Orleans County. She is survived by her husband, Maynard Greenwood, of Newport; by sister-in-law Michaelene Baker and her husband, Gaylord, of Derby; by brother-in-law Michael Greenwood and his wife, Betty, of Newport; by special nephews: Paul Baker and his wife, Tanya, and their children Miranda and Mia of Derby, Eric Baker and his fiancée, Michelle Burns, and their daughter Khelsie Baker of Irasburg, and Michael and Ryan Greenwood of Newport; and by special friends: Lorraine Lyons of Derby, Wilma Boulanger of Coventry, Andrea Roberts of Newport, Kim Hodge of Holland, Alta Brooks of Newport, Bea Deslandes and memere Anna Sanville, both of Newport Center, Rever Kennedy and Manon Perreault, both of Newport, and by many other friends. She was predeceased by a niece, Hillary Baker, on October 23; and by a special friend, Lisa Deslandes, on July 27. Funeral services were held Friday, February 22, at Curtis-Britch Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Leopold Bilodeau officiating. Spring interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. David G. Lawson

, 57, of Westmoreland, Tennessee, died at his home on February 24, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Lawson was born on May 11, 1944, in Newport. For many years he worked for Space Research Corporation in North Troy and was head security guard there for both the American and Canadian sides of the border. He also worked at Hayes Ford in Newport, in both the service and reconditioning departments. He moved to Tennessee eight years ago and was employed by Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts in Nashville and more recently at Peytons Mid-South in Portland. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Newport Center and also served as a volunteer fireman for 23 years in Vermont. His interests were camping, bowling, gardening, birdwatching, auto mechanics, and attending country music concerts and Predators hockey games in Nashville. He was a great friend to his neighbors and was always willing to lend them a helping hand. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Lee; by sons John Lawson of Orleans and Bradley Lawson and his wife, Katherine, of Coventry; by stepsons Michael Hilliker and his wife, Monique, of Newport and Matthew Hilliker and his fiancée, Amy Riegel, of Coventry; by three beautiful granddaughters: Jordan Lee Lawson, Taylor Morgan Lawson, and Alyssa Loretta Hilliker; by stepmother, Helen Lawson, of Newport Center; by brother Dennis Lawson of Newport Center; by sisters Connie Handy of Newport Center and Linda King of Littleton, New Hampshire; and by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon Lawson; by his mother, Helen Morel; and by sister Joyce Messier. A memorial service will be held in Vermont in the spring. , 88, of Newport died peacefully February 20, 2002, in Newport. Mrs. Miller was born January 6, 1914, in Marlington, Quebec, a daughter of Gordon and Edith (Bullock) Bullock. On October 10, 1935, she married Earl Miller, who predeceased her on October 14, 1996. She was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. She spent most of her adult life in Holland, Vermont, and moved to Newport in later years. She enjoyed listening to music and playing games. She battled diabetes for many years and in the past year, Parkinson's disease and cancer. She is survived by a son, Lawrence Miller, and his wife, Mary, of Prescott, Arizona; by a granddaughter, Rebecca Poteet, of Pasadena, Texas; by two grandsons, Kenneth Miller of Portland, Oregon, and Mark Miller of Gilbert, Arizona; by four great-grandchildren; by a brother, Alan Bullock, of Graniteville, Quebec; by a sister, Marion Martin, of Plainfield; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Miller. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 26, at Curtis-Britch Memorial Chapel. Spring interment will be in Derby Line Cemetery.
Jeffrey C. Taylor

, 59, died Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Mr. Taylor was born in Englewood, New Jersey, on February 21, 1942, the son of Charles and Jean (Cross) Taylor. He had been married to Leslie Christina Tate. He was a dedicated teacher and administrator, whose educational responsibilities spanned over 30 years in several northern New England public school districts. Most recently, he held the position of principal of Poultney High School. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and demonstrating his school spirit by attending all of his school's extracurricular activities. He is survived by his daughter Christine Bigar of Las Vegas, Nevada; by two nephews, Kevin Blafkin of Boston, and Mark Blafkin of Washington, D.C.; and by a niece, Sandra Blafkin, of Bolton, Connecticut, and her longtime friend, Jann Swift, and her children. He was predeceased by his son Stephen Taylor. There are no scheduled calling hours. Funeral services were Saturday, February 23, at Norwich University White Memorial Chapel in Northfield.
