peacefully at her home Monday, April 2, 2001. Sue was born May 20, 1951,
in Syracuse N.Y. , the daughter of Clifford and Gerri Wyand of
Plattsburgh, N.Y. and Marco Island Fla. She resided with her parents and
13 brothers and sisters in the South Burlington area since 1964. Sue
graduated from Rice Memorial High School in 1969, and Champlain College
in 1971, and remained in the area until the mid-seventies when she
became part owner of the C.A. Lockrow Company in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Upon
the sale of that business in 1979, Sue moved to Incline Village, Nev.
where she resided for the last 22 years. Sue was loved by many and known
not only for her ""sparkling blue eyes and winning
smile"", but for her involvement in the community of Incline
Village. She was a real estate broker at Incline Properties for the past
nine years. She had served as treasurer for the Incline Board of
Realtors, and was a member of the Incline schools PTA. She was an avid
hiker, skier, and golfer. She loved the outdoors and loved being with
her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Sue leaves her
husband, Burke of Incline Village, Nev, daughter Tracy Heinrich of
Truckee CA, son Jamie Heinrich of Reno, Nev., stepson Burke Stancill Jr.
and his wife, Kacey of Colorado, stepdaughter Ginny Bogan and her
husband Dave of Reno Nev., thirteen brothers and sisters and their
spouses, Dave and Mary Kay Wyand of Lake Sunapee N.H., Doug and Gail
Wyand of South Burlington, Dan and Mary Kaye Wyand of St. Johnsbury, Tom
and Diane Wyand of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Chuck and Mary Ann Wyand of New
Fairfield, Conn., Chip Wyand of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Jim and Melanie Wyand
of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Mary Waynd and Paul Vellutini of San Francisco,
CA, Bob and Leslie Wyand of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Kathy and Derek Pratt of

WHITING — Leonard Fontaine

April 9, 2001, in Whiting. Leonard was born in Newport on Dec. 10, 1943, the
son of Gerard and Rose (Lanoue) Fontaine. He graduated from Sacred Heart
High School in 1963. Leonard served in the U.S. Navy. Following his
discharge, he returned to Newport and lived there until moving his family to
Whiting in 1994. Leonard worked for C.S. Emery in Derby Line, then for
Cooperative Fire Insurance. Later, he was self-employed, selling fence posts
and apples. He spent much time tending his apple orchard in Whiting. He also
enjoyed attending farmers’ markets in many areas of Vermont. He was known
throughout the state for selling his produce. Survivors include his
children, Nicole Hertz, Frank and his wife, Julia, Carmen and her husband,
Ben, and Steve and his companion, Rebecca Schoolcraft; his mother, Rose
Fontaine of Derby Line; his sisters, Annette Pion and her husband, Roger, of
Holland, Vt., Yvette Neal and her husband, Wallace, of Florida, and Gerry
Ault and her husband, Carl, of Texas; grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Gerard Fontaine. A memorial
service will be held in Derby Line on May 14 in St. Edward Church at 11 a.m.
Burial will be private in the Veterans’ Cemetery in Randolph Center. In lieu

WINDSOR, CONN. — Robert V. Aldrich
....show , 73, beloved husband of the late Ann (Scanlon) Aldrich and
the late Lorraine (Wagner) Aldrich died Friday April 13, 2001, in New
Smyrna Beach, Fla. Born in Hartford, Conn., the son of the late Rupert
and Catherine(Carney) Aldrich, he lived in Enfield before moving to
Windsor 11 years ago. Robert served with the U.S. Army and was employed
for over 30 years with the Army National Guard before retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the V.F.W. of Windsor Locks Post 6123, AMVETS Post 18
of Windsor Locks, the American Legion Post 14 of Vergennes, the Enfield
Elks Club, and the Italian American Club of Windsor Locks. Robert is
survived by two daughters, Judy Aldrich of Enfield, Ct., Cathy Hall of
Mass, two step-daughters and their husbands, Sally and Dennis Bristol of
Windsor, Susanne and Robert Akerlind of Windsor Locks; four step-sons
and their wives, Dale and Sharon Wagner of Az., Paul Wagner of Rocky
Hill, Ct., Richard and Joy Wagner of Windsor, Robert and Christine
Wagner III of Vt.; a sister Patricia Bennett of New Britian, Ct., a
sister-in-law, Nancy Aldrich of Wethersfield; two grandchildren, Ann and
Leonard Hall. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Aldrich; three
sisters, Helen Aldrich, Frances Sutton and Genevieve White. Family and

MORRISVILLE — Doris C. Russ
....show , 94, died April 13, 2001, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She
was born in North Wolcott on May 3, 1906, the daughter of Alvin and Ines
(Clifford) Russ. She lived most of her adult life with her sister, Mary
and her husband, Bert Stancliffe, on the Randolph Road farm and then on
Laporte Road. Doris devoted much of her life to her profession as a
schoolteacher in Morristown, a career that spanned 45 years. Her
teaching began in one-room schools, on Cole Hill and Morristown Corners.
She was one of the last educators to occupy the ""one-room
schools” and upon their closing moved to a third grade position at the
elementary school until retirement. She always kept herself active in
community events and could always be counted on to provide
transportation or lend a helping hand to others. In her later years,
Doris became active in the Senior Citizens Center, singing with the
""Forget-Me-Nots,” and working on quilts and other projects
at the Center. Doris is survived by two nieces, Betty Rainey of Lecanto,
Fla., and Eleanor Argandona of Framingham, Mass.; grandnieces Barbara
Ferrara, Karen and Nancy Loester, Pam Argandona, and Debbie Puumala;
great-grandnieces Erika and Katie; and great-grandnephews Aleks and
Miguel. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in
the Puffer United Methodist Church in Morrisville. In lieu of flowers,

short illness. She was born in Winooski on December 14, 1914, the
daughter of the late George Parsons and Esther (Gadue) Parsons Cota. She
was married in Oakland County, Mich., on May 29, 1946 to Kenneth H.
Sadlier, who predeceased her. Doris was formerly employed as a winder at
the American Woolen Mills in Winooski. She was a member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars in Riverview. Doris is survived by one son, Charles
Sadlier of La.; two grandsons, Charles Sadlier, II of Riverview, and
Christopher Sadlier of La.; one granddaughter, Kendi Sadlier of
Riverview; two great-granddaughters of Riverview; one daughter-in-law,
Catherine Sadlier of La.; one nephew, Robert Letourneau of Parkin, Ark.;
two nieces, Rita Craine of Largo Fla., and Frances Bradley of Winooski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 20, 2001

Friday, April 13, 2001. She was a former resident of 3 Cathedral Square.
She was born Jan. 22, 1901, in Windsor, Ontario, the daughter of
Frederick and Roseanna Housen. Mrs. Vaughan had been a receptionist and
secretary for Dr. Irwin for many years prior to her retirement. She is
survived by her daughter, Nancy Lavigne and her husband, Ray, of
Burlington; three grandchildren, Rayburn V. Lavigne and his wife,
Violet, of Williston, Gary La- vigne of Underhill, and Vicki Lavigne and
her husband, Brian Cunningham, of Burlington; and eight
great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, George Vaughan,
in 1962; two brothers; and two sisters. A private graveside service will
be held in the memorial garden of St. Paul Cathedral at the convenience

BURLINGTON — Karl Potter Brown Jr.

his home Saturday, April 14, 2001, following several years of failing
health. He was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Montgomery, the son of the late
Karl and Doris H. (Potter) Brown. He was a graduate of Burlington High
School, Class of 1943. June 19, 1949, he married Ruth Gonyeau in Essex
Junction. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999.
Karl served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956.
Karl retired from IBM in 1988, where he was a senior analyst. He was a
longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Burlington and a
member of Burlington B.P.O.E. 916. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling.
He is survived by his loving and devoted family: his wife, Ruth of
Burlington; their daughter, Karen Brown of Colchester; his two sisters,
Barbara Meunier and her husband, Clarence, of Burlington and Martha
Boynton of Florida; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews; and his brother-in-law, Donald Gonyeau and his wife,
Beverly. He was predeceased by two sisters, Genevieve and Judith; and a
brother, Gordon. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the
very caring people at the VNA Adult Day Care Program, staff of VNA Home
Care and Dr. Thomas Roland. A memorial service will be held in the

COLCHESTER — Robert James Brown
....show , 59, head chef and then manager of the local Shelburne Inn
for approximately 20 years died at his home in Colchester on April 14,
2001. He had suffered from complications of diabetes and had been
hospitalized for many months at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Bob was born
in Hershey, Pa. on November 20, 1941. He graduated from Milton-Hershey
School for Boys and from the University of Pennsylvania. Bob taught
English for a period of time in that area. He moved to Vermont in the
early 1970s to begin another career as a master chef in several Vermont
restaurants, Town and Country in Stowe, The Tavern in Montpelier, and
Prime Factor in Winooski. He was awarded a Certificate of Merit from
LaConfreria des Amis des Franapes des France. In the late 1970s Bob was
manager of the Harbor Hideaway on Route 7 in Shelburne. He graduated
from the American Culinary Federation in May, 1983. In July, 1985 he was
named Certified Hotel Administrator by the American Hotel and Motel
Association. Bob was a man of many talents, his wit, keen insights, and
devotion to friends will be missed by many in the community, indeed,
throughout the world. Though he leaves no known family, his friends are
numerous. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Hebrew
Holy Society Cemetery, Patchen Rd., So. Burlington with Rabbi Joshua

COLCHESTER — Lilla (Bergeron) Hammond

Jesus Christ, Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in
Burlington following a short illness. She was born in Burlington on Oct.
16, 1923, the daughter of the late Eleazer and Mary Louise (Massey)
Bergeron. Lilla was a loving mother who devoted her life to her family.
During the war, Lilla went to Albuquerque, N.M., to marry Frank Hammond
before he departed for overseas. Upon returning home, they spent their
life raising their family in Burlington and later Colchester. She was a
parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Colchester, a member of the
Women’s Aglow, the Catholic Family Fellowship and the Lakeside Steppers.
She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Roche and her husband, Jim,
of Essex, Lori Danaher and her husband, Matthew, of Shrewsbury, Kathy
Hammond of Colchester, and JoAnn Hammond of South Burlington; six sons,
James Hammond and his wife, Gabrielle of Colchester, Stephen Hammond and
his wife, Andrea, of Colchester, William Hammond and his wife, Donna, of
Colchester, Gerald Hammond and his wife, Christine, of Colchester,
Dennis Hammond and his wife, Claire, of Burlington, and Larry Hammond
and his wife, Lise, of Burlington; 20 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Urban L. Bergeron and his wife,

COLCHESTER — John E. Lavery

Saturday, April 14, 2001. He was born in Burlington on June 9, 1953, the
son of Robert E. and Isabel (Rock) Lavery. John graduated from Milton
High School and served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Vietnam
Conflict. He was a valued employee with JFS Electric as an electrician.
John was a member of Christ the King Church, the NRA and a former member
of the VFW. The love and pride of his life were his two wonderful
children, John C. and Brittany Lavery, both of Milton. His devotion to
his children and family was his most defining characteristic. His many
gifts included his artistic work, one of which was producing claymation
movies, making everyone smile and happy wherever he went, but most of
all his homemade pie baking. He was most happy being with his children
and teaching them his artistic work. John was also an avid trekkie.
Besides his children, he is survived by their mother, Tanya Lavery of
Milton. He is also survived by his father, Robert E. Lavery; two
brothers, Tim and Jay Lavery, of Burlington; four sisters, Maureen
Lavery and Donna Lambert, both of Burlington, Joan Poutre of Newport,
and Suzanne Lavery and her husband, John Belcher, of Colorado Springs,
Colo. He leaves his special nieces and nephews, Kim, Robin, Jeff, Laura,
Steven, Michael, and Erin; and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
His stepson, Ryan Carpentier; and stepgrandchildren Taylor and Bailey
also survive him. He leaves his special friends, Joel Snyder Jr., Dave
Maynard and Dave Abair. He was predeceased by a brother, Tom, in 1968;
his mother in 1983; brothers-in-law Mike Poutre, in 1997, and Larry
""Sparky” Lambert, in 1999. A memorial service and
celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, April 17, in Christ the
King Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the

was born Jan. 31, 1933, in Bristol, the son of Arthur C. and Alice E.
(Shepard) Prime. He was a member of the Bristol Federated Church. T.
served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He served as an
area policeman for many years. He taught hunter safety for many years.
T. married Barbara Estus on Jan. 31, 1964. He was a member of Bristol
Masonic Libanus Lodge 47, F&AM, and Order of the Eastern Star
Libanus Chapter 47. He was also a member of the Bristol American Legion
Post 19. T. is survived by his wife, Barbara Prime, and two sons,
Matthew and Daniel Prime, all of Bristol; two brothers, Dean Prime of
New Haven and Weldon Prime of Vergennes; three sisters, Jeanie Prime of
Connecticut, Anna Palmer of Hinesburg, and Charlene Peryea of Bristol;
and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday, April

Berlin, died April 14, 2001, in Central Vermont Hospital She was born
June 19, 1917, in Burlington, the daughter of Arthur D. Bishop and
Martha L. Gently Bishop. Frances graduated in 1935 from Montpelier High
School and attended Burlington Business College. She married Eraldo
Spinelli on December 14, 1938, in Montpelier. She was employed at the
Vermont State Library in Montpelier and retired with 25 years of
service. Frances enjoyed reading, knitting, traveling and was devoted to
her grandchildren and family. She was proud of her Pontiac convertible,
Mustang and Hilman that she owned. Survivors include a daughter, Martha
D. Bruce and her husband, James, of East Greenbush, N.Y.; two sons,
Michael A. Spinelli and his wife, Nancy, of Waterbury Center, and Norman
L. Spinelli and his wife, Mary, of Springfield; nine grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman A. Bishop and his wife, Phyllis,
of St. Albans; a sister, Carolyn L. Emerson and her husband, Robert, of
Richmond; a special niece and nephew, Louisa A. Rushford and John
Emerson; and five other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Spineilli was
predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Constance B. Wheeless and Nancy

MILTON — Robert G. North

80, of McMullen Road died Sunday evening April 15, 2001, at his home in
Milton, following a long illness. Robert was born March 26, 1921 in
Shelburne, the son of George and Grace Shaw North. A carpenter by trade,
Robert worked for many years as a union carpenter on various area
projects. On August 1, 1941, he married Doris Sanderson in South
Burlington. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army
from 1942 to 1945. He spent 28 months of duty in the Mediterranean
theatre of operation. Robert was a member of the United Church of
Milton, a lifetime member of the DAV Donald Cooke Chapter 5 in
Burlington, VFW Post 7848, Milton, and a former member of the American
Legion Post 57 in Milton. An avid outdoorsman, he loved ice fishing and
deep sea fishing with his wife. He also enjoyed camping, hunting,
carpentry, gardening and operating his mini farm in Milton. He is
survived by his wife to whom he has been married for over 59 years,
Doris North of Milton, and their children, Grace Williams of St. Albans,
Jeannine Francis, and her husband Richard, of Hinesburg, Emil North and
his close friend Karen Root of Milton, and Annette North and her spouse
Judith North of Huntington; his ten grandchildren, Kansas, Leslie,
Peggy, Robin, Doris, Brent, Brock, Dominique, Emil Jean Jr., and Robert
J.; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister,
Myrtle Garcia of South Burlington; two brothers-in-law, Clifford
Sanderson of South Burlington and Conrad Sanderson, and his wife,
Yvonne, of Fla; five sisters-in-law, Arlene Burt of Burlington, Juanita
DeMar of Essex, Lucy Laughlin of Ohio, Norma Mayer and her husband,

Robert C. North on February 5, 1958, and by four brothers, seven

SHELDON — Leona G. Phillips

away Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001 at Verdelle Village ECF in St.
Albans. She was born in Bakersfield on February 2, 1911, the daughter of
the late Herbert H. and Harriet (Shanley) Gover. At an early age, she
resided in Sheldon with a beloved aunt and uncle, the late Mark and Lena
Stephenson. She was the widow of Thomas J. Phillips, who died April 1,
1993. Mrs. Phillips attended Sheldon Schools and what was then Sheldon
High School and graduated from Vermont Academy and the University of
Vermont. After graduating from UVM, she went to North Bennington where
she taught school for eight years. A resident of Sheldon most of her
life, she resumed teaching in the Sheldon School system where she served
in the capacity of principal and first grade teacher until her
retirement in 1974. Her love of children induced her to continue as a
substitute teacher for area towns. Mrs. Phillips was a memeber of Delta
Kappa Gamma International Zeta Chapter. Governor Johnson appointed her
to the Vermont State Board of Education, the first teacher in service to
serve on the board. She was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church
in Sheldon. Survivors include her son and his wife, Gary and Marsha
Phillips of Montgomery Center, a beloved grandson Mark and his wife Dawn
Phillips of Milton, three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Chayce and Brooke
Phillips of Milton and several cousins and dear friends. In addition to
her husband Thomas, she was predeceased by her parents and a brother,
Harland Gover. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 19 at

WILMINGTON — Elizabeth ""Betty” Crafts Pike
....show , 84, a former resident of Wilmington,
died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Thompson House in Brattleboro. She had
been a resident of Brattleboro since 1978. she was born in Wilmington on
Dec. 19, 1916, the youngest child of Roswell P. and Meda (Gilbert)
Crafts. She grew up in Wilmington, attending local schoolhouses and
graduating from Wilmington High School with the Class of 1935. Mrs. Pike
was married to Gordon C. Pike on Aug. 10, 1935, in Wilmington. Mr. Pike
predeceased her Jan. 25, 1962. Mrs. Pike took great pride and devotion
in raising her five children. She was a loving and caring mother and
grandmother who thoroughly enjoyed her family and home. In the summer
months, she would spend a great deal of time with her family and tending
to the large flower garden in which she took great pride. While her
children were growing up, she was very active in the Wilmington PTA and
was president of the Mothers Club for many years. During World War II,
she assisted the war effort by knitting clothing for the White Cross.
She had been a member of the former Universalist Church in Wilmington;
when this closed, she began attending the Wilmington Congregational
Church. Upon her relocating to Brattleboro, she became involved in the
Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and had given 15 years of service. She
was also an active participant in the activities programs at Thompson
House. Mrs. Pike is survived by a son, John G. Pike of Livingston,
Texas; two daughters, Melanie P. Boyd of Wilmington and Mary Pike-Sprenger
of West Dover; seven grandchildren, Brie E. Pike-Sprenger, Tyne A. Pike-Sprenger,
Kim Y. Pike, John G. Pike, Alan C. Pike, Scott L. Pike, and Joshua N.
Pike; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by two sons and a grandson, Gordon Averell Pike, who died
Dec. 12, 1993, and Timothy S. Pike and his son, Zachary Daniel Pike, who
both died July 2, 1977. A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday,
April 18, at 11 a.m. in the Wilmington Congregational Church.
Officiating will be the Rev. Marcia Dorey, pastor, and the Rev. John
Cerrato, pastor of the Wilmington Baptist Church. Interment will follow
in the Pike family lot in Riverview Cemetery. There are no calling

on May 9, 1955, in Colchester. He was manager of Essex Legion baseball
for many years, an avid bowler, and an original member of Green Mountain
Boys Country Western Band. Mr. Ravelin is survived by his wife, Shirley
Ravelin of Essex Junction; one son, Howard Ravelin, Jr. of Essex
Junction; two daughters, Sharon Husk of Vergennes and Linda Parker and
her husband, Doug Parker, of Williston; grandchildren, Tracy Parker of
Haverhill, Mass, and Jessica and Brigitte Husk of Ferrisburg; a sister,
Barbara Spell and her husband, Bill, of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother

FLORENCE — Floyd Charles Sumner
....show , 81, died Sunday April 15,
2001 at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Floyd was born December 21,
1919 to Belle and Clayton Sumner. As a young man, he enlisted in the
United States Army and served in F Company, 172nd, 43rd Division. His
many stations during World War II, included the Salomon Islands, Altape,
New Guinea, and as a passenger on the U.S.S. Coolidge during its
sinking, for which he received numerous awards and medals including the
Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, which his
license plate displayed showing his pride and loyalty to his country.
Upon completion of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., Floyds
name will appear in the registry of remembrances. Floyd married C.
Margeret Martin of Williamstown on June 10, 1946, after gaining
employment with Vermont Transit. They resided in Danville until 1963
when a transfer brought them to the Rutland area. Floyd was known for
his love of travel and his quick smile. He retired from Vermont Transit
in 1982 after 37 years of service with a perfect driving record, of
which he was very proud. Floyd and his wife retired to Florence where
they enjoyed the beauty of their home, surrounded by nature’s beautiful
trees, wild flowers, and many animals. Floyd was a member of the
Washburn Lodge 92 F & AM of Danville for over 50 years and a
longtime member of the American Legion. Floyds wife Margeret died in
May, 1997, shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
They had three children, Lana Caroline Sumner, Joyce Sumner LaFayette,
and Floyd Charles ”Chic” Sumner II. Lana predeceased Floyd in 1999 at
the young age of 51. Floyd enjoyed the company of his family and many
dear friends that visited him during the time he was restricted to home.
He was most grateful of his consistent love and support from his son
Chic, and daughter, Joyce, who were his caregivers during his illnesses.
Floyd leaves behind his daughter Joyce Sumner Lafayette; his son, Floyd
Charles ”Chic” Sumner; brothers, Wayne Sumner, Reggie Porier; sister
Wynonna Aja; grandchildren, Jayson Sumner, Kristi Kasey, Jesse and Karly
LaFayette, and Chip Sumner; and his great granddaughter Shelby Sumner.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April, 19 at 2 p.m.at the
Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford. Burial will follow in Evergreen
Cemetery in Pittsford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday,

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Ronald C. Mayer

Center Hospital on April 16, 2001. Ron was born in Port Huron, Mich. on
August 31, 1913, to Charles and Elna Mayer. He married Norma Downs on
August 24, 1941, who predeceased him in 1997. Ron was a World War II
veteran who served 22 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1957. Ron also
worked for 20 years in the research and development division of Electric
Boat in Groton, Conn. Prior to his naval service, Ron served in the
C.C.C. in northern Michigan. While in the Navy, Ron assisted rescue of
the refugees of the Spanish Civil War, served in both the Atlantic and
Pacific Theaters in World War II, and was an instructor in the Navy
Submarine School in Groton, Conn. Ron’s passions in life were golf and
travel. He was a scratch golfer who played on 236 courses throughout the
world and was frequently chosen to play by pros in various Pro-Am
tournaments. He literally traveled around the world and at the age of
86, chronicled his journeys in a book. Ron is survived by his daughter,
Diane L (Dee) Scheidel and son-in-law Patrick C. Scheidel of Essex. A
remembrance of Ron will be held in the Allenwood Building of Pillsbury
Manor, 90 Allen Road, South Burlington on Thursday, April 19, from 6 to

Mesa, Ariz. She had lived in the Sun City and Scottsdale areas of Arizona for
33 years and was a member of the St. Joachim and St. Anne Catholic Church in
Sun City. She was born in Colchester in March 1904. She is survived by a son,
Clyde of Fountain Hills, Ariz., five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She will be interred at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial

BURLINGTON — Deborah Lee Reid
....show died Monday, April 16, 2001, in the presence of her family and
friends. She had waged a long and courageous fight with ulcerative
colitis and resulting complications. Debbie was born in St. Albans on
Aug. 18, 1956, the daughter of Roy J. Jewett and Rose (Trombley) Jewett.
She graduated from Bellows Free Academy, Class of 1974. Debbie was
employed by the Olympiad Health Racquet Aerobics Club, which had served
as an anchor in her life for the past 15 years. During the time that her
children attended Flynn School, she volunteered a tremendous amount of
time to benefit all the students. Among her accomplishments, she
established a computer lab for kindergarten through second grade
students with used and donated equipment, was instrumental in adding
recreational equipment to the playground and served as an officer of the
PTO. Debbie loved flowers, baskets, and vases and was especially proud
of her gardens of irises, but, above all, the light in her life was her
two children, Michelle and Chris. Debbie married A. Gary Reid on Oct.
15, 1977. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Michelle
L. Reid; her son, Christopher N. Reid; her mother, Rose Jewett of St.
Albans; her uncle, Charles Trombley and his wife, Edith, of Palm Harbor,
Fla.; four sisters, Gloria and her husband, Ronald Hemond, of St.
Albans; Donna Jettie of Highgate Center; Patricia O’Dell of St. Albans,
and Cynthia and her husband, David Godin, of St. Albans; her
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Andrew J. Reid and Ethel Reid of
Burlington; three sisters-in-law, Ora Jewett of St. Albans, Ann Williams
of Burlington, and Susan Shepherd of Burlington; and many nephews,
nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Roy J. Jewett;
and her brother, Roy K. ""Chip” Jewett, whom she deeply
missed. A memorial service for Debbie will be held Sunday, May 20, at 2
p.m. at the residence of A. Gary Reid, 395 Appletree Point Road,

April 16, 200, in Copley Hospital, Morrisville, following an extended
illness. He was born in Boston on October 20, 1920. Joseph married the
former Margaret Fitzgerald on Nov. 13, 1948. Joseph was a veteran of
World War II, serving in the Army in the Europe African Middle Eastern
Theater Campaign. The majority of his working career was with the U.S.
Postal Service in Massachusetts, retiring in 1973. After moving about
the country, he and Margaret settled in Vermont and have made their home
here for the past 20 years. Joseph always loved to read and learn, and
decided to attend college, graduating with honors from Johnson State
College in 1980 with a degree in Human Services. One of his greatest
pleasures in life has been as a grandfather, a role that had brought
great enjoyment to him and to his grandchildren through the years.
Besides his wife, Margaret, he is survived by his four daughters,
Maureen Riley of New Mexico, Louise Riley of Morrisville, Sheila Halnon
and her husband, Jim, of Sharon, and Andrea Peden and her husband,
Michael, of Essex Junction.; three sisters, Evelyn Riley, Lillian Riley
and Irene Dineen; three grandchildren, Sean, Annie and Evan Halnon. A

BURLINGTON — Sandra Teresa Anderson Glass

on to the Lord on April 17, 2001. Her beloved husband, Ronald, remained
by her side during her courageous struggle with lymphoma. Sandy was born
Aug. 14, 1938, in Kingston, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ethel May
MacIntosh Anderson and Gustave A. Anderson. She attended a one-room
school in Olivebridge, N.Y, and graduated from Onteora Central High
School in 1956. She was employed by Universal Road Machinery in Kingston
as a secretary for 10 years. May 28, 1966, Sandra married Ronald J.
Glass in St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Stony Hollow, N.Y.
Subsequently, they lived in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Alaska and
Vermont, always maintaining close ties to family and friends in
Olivebridge. Sandy is survived by her husband, Ronald of Starksboro and
Sterling, Alaska; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Margaret
Anderson of Kingston, Glenn and Edith Anderson of Staten Island, N.Y.,
Lowell and Rosemarie Anderson of Olivebridge, and Wallace Anderson of
Starksboro; 15 nieces and nephews; 19 grandnieces and grandnephews to
whom she was very devoted; and her lifelong friend, Deanne Capisano of
Arlington, Va. A brother, Joseph Anderson, predeceased her in 1985.
Sandy, a warm and caring person who touched the lives of all who knew
her, was a surrogate mother, mentor and confidante to her nieces and
nephews. She served as guardian and caregiver for her handicapped
brother, Wallace. She also provided attention and care for her
mother-in-law, the late Anna D. Glass, during Mrs. Glass’ declining
years. Sandy’s youthful appearance and enthusiasm throughout her life
complemented her grand sense of humor; still it was the person within
that touched everyone’s life. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Lasher Funeral Home in Woodstock,
N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John’s R.C.

BURLINGTON — Patricia "Patti" Robinson Guyette

passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Burlington. She was born in
Springfield on Oct. 11, 1966, the daughter of Peter and Virginia (Sears)
Robinson. Patti was a graduate of O’Brien’s Cosmetology School and
worked for O’Brien’s Inc. in Burlington. Patti died at peace, with her
family at her side. She showed great strength through her illness, and
she had an ability to help her family and friends through it with her.
Patti loved to follow her son in his sports, and she made friends
wherever she went. She enjoyed reading and her time with her cats,
Abigail and Annie. Aug. 3, 1991, Patti married Todd Guyette, who
survives her. Besides her husband, Todd, she is survived by her son,
Steven Guyette of Burlington; her father, Peter Robinson and his wife,
Pauline, of New Port Richey, Fla.; her mother, Virginia Robinson of
Newport; her sister, Glenda Garrow and her husband, Brent, of Enosburg,
and Judy Robinson of Derby; her stepsister, Joanne Scott of Newport; her
stepbrother, Norman Poulin and his wife, Karen of Lisbon, N.D., and
Donald Poulin and his wife, Peggy, of Derby; her mother-in-law, Sandra

married Agnes Gertrude ""Gert” Walsh in St. Mary’s Church. He
had been employed at Standard Register Company, retiring in 1987 after
having a long career as a carbon planner. He was a devoted family man
and doted on his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all. He is
survived by his wife of 43 years; a son, William J. Lacey Jr. and his
wife, Lynne (Leger) Lacey; and his grandchildren, Tara M. Lacey and
Connor W. A. Lacey; his siblings, Lawrence Lacey of Middlebury, Ronald

BURLINGTON — Donald Robert Macy

2001, after a long bout with carcinoid cancer in Fletcher Allen Health
Care, Burlington, in the company of his family, wife, and loved ones. He
was born on June 12, 1961 in Saranac Lake, N.Y., the son of Donald V.
and Nancy (Deslauriers) Macy. Donald graduated from Burlington High
School in 1979 and also attended Burlington College. He was very
versatile, being very involved in social work and also developed several
programs for C.O.T.S. and Spectrum. Don created long lasting
self-employment for himself and others. He owned Macy’s Property
Maintenance, was a woodworker who crafted unique furniture, and was on
committees for Temporary Shelter and for Spectrum Youth Services. He
also had several hobbies such as coaching softball for four years; being
an avid chess player; a teacher and student of yoga and meditation; as
well as loving nature, wildlife, the outdoors and basketball. Donald was
a spiritual man, he shared his compassion with people from every walk of
life. He was a wonderful father and loved his children, wife, and family
very much. He showed excellent communication skills and was able to
maintain high levels of responsibility that endure. He worked well with
others respecting their ideas as well as his own. He was loved by many.
Don is survived by his wife and companion, Trudy Macy of Burlington; two
daughters, Brittany and Tianna, and one son, Jordan, all of Essex; his
mother, Nancy Macy of Colchester; his father, Donald V. Macy of Lyon
Mountain, N.Y.; and two sisters, Vicki and Michele Macy of Burlington.

at Shelburne Bay Senior Living Community, and formerly at Gardenside.
Lola taught sixth grade for 31 years in the Norwalk, Conn., public
schools. She graduated from Danbury Normal School in 1926. Later, she
obtained both a B.A. and M.A. in education from the University of
Bridgeport. She is survived by two children, Perry B. Seiffert of
Bethesda, Md., and Linda Seiffert Reynolds of Monkton; four
grandchildren; a sister, Camilla B. Sloat of Venice, Fla.; and several
nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be celebrated at 1 p.m.

2001. She was born October 14, 1931 in Lake Crystal, Minn., the daughter
of Zach and Ellen (Fisher) Whiting. In December, 1956, she was married
to Kenneth H. Niell of Johnson. After graduating from Cambridge High
School, she attended Burlington Business College and was later employed
by Burlington Grocery Company for several years. She served the town of
Johnson for over thirty years, first as an auditor then as Assistant
Town Clerk, and as Town Clerk and Treasurer for twelve years, retiring
in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Neill, and three sons,
David and his wife, Joyce, of New Milford, Conn., Shawn of Highgate, and
Kevin and his wife, Monita, of Milton; seven grandchildren, Bethany,
Alyssa, Zachariah, Catherine, Anna, Zachary and Nikayla; four sisters,
Marion Locke of Waterville, Lois Tatro of Quechee, Mildred Sargent of
Johnson, Alice Whiting of Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her parents, Zach and Ellen Whiting, and one brother,
Arthur Whiting. Throughout her life, Helen enjoyed her family, including
summer gatherings in York Beach, Maine, and a variety of handicrafts
such as knitting, rug braiding, and quilting. She also took pleasure and
pride in her many associations with the people of the Johnson community.
The family will receive friends Sunday April 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7
to 9 p.m. at the des Groseilliers Funeral Home, Main St., Johnson.
Services will be Monday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

St. Anthony Church in Burlington to Ford H. Patno, who predeceased her
in 1992 after 60 years of marriage. She was a member of Christ the King
parish and of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Athena Club. She
also was a very active volunteer for many and varied civic and religious
causes. She is survived by her four children, Floyd Patno of
Brattleboro, Roger Patno and his wife, Joyce, of St. Albans, Margaret
Hinen of Gaston, S.C., Roy Patno and his wife, Atchar, of Hinsdale, N.H.;
two sisters-in-law, Margaret Beauchemin and Mildred Allard, both of
Burlington; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was
predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth
Patno; and a grandson, Gregory Patno. A Mass of Christian Burial will be

operator for the New England Telephone Company for several years. She

seamstress and enjoyed sewing, ceramics, playing cards and cooking for
her family. She was a member of the Saturday Night Card Players. She

April 19, 2001. She was the daughter of Ralph and Lena (Davis) Post,
born in Putnam, N.Y., on Dec. 28, 1915. Vivian married Thomas R.
Buttolph in Shoreham on Nov. 12, 1939, and there raised five children,
who survive them: Elizabeth Spann- bauer and her husband, Douglas, of
New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Judith Cerand of Brandon and her fiance, Dale
Harris, of Rutland, Carolyn Meyer of West Pawlet, Thomas Buttolph and
his wife, Mary, of Shoreham, and Kathryn Laframboise and her husband,
Mark, of Middlebury. Vivian took joy in her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and shared with them her love of nature and lifelong
learning. She was a strong and independent person and thankful for the
loving support of her family and of the health care professionals and
volunteers who enabled her to enjoy the final comforts of home care.

illness. Frank was born in Middlebury on Jan. 29, 1932, the son of the
late Walter and Gertrude (Cullinane) Casey. He graduated from Middlebury
High School in 1950 and Springfield College in 1958. Frank served in the
U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a credit manager for
General Electric Credit Corp., Independent Food Co., and Jordan Foods
during his career. He retired in 1992. He was an avid sports enthusiast.
He was a high school football official and the first president of the
Burlington Youth Football Program, which he founded. He was an announcer
at both the Burlington High School football games and St. Michael’s
College basketball games. Frank loved to play golf, especially at the
Burlington Country Club. Frank leaves his wife of 41 years, Betsey
Kelley Casey; two sons, Michael of Worcester, Mass., and Kevin and his
wife, Diane, of Colchester; three grandchildren, Christin, Sean and
Ryan; several nieces and nephews; and his four sets of golf clubs. A
celebration of his life will be held Saturday April 28, at 3 p.m. at

2001, in Central Vermont Hospital. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, on
June 16, 1908. Kurt came to the United States as a teenager. His jobs
included being a private investigator in San Francisco and a farmer in
Washington. As a mechanic for USAID, Kurt traveled throughout Asia and
Africa. While in Korea, he met his wife, Hunto, with whom he shared 25
years. Hunto predeceased him in 1996. He was an avid fisherman, gardener
and herbalist. Kurt is survived by his stepdaughter, Yenna Yi of
Vergennes; his grandson, Ano Lobb; and his granddaughter-in-law, Jenny
Hyslop, both of Waterbury Center. Private services will be held in St.

BURLINGTON — Constance Ethel Southwell

in Williston on April 20, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in South Burlington on Sept. 4, 1948, Constance was the daughter of
Shirley and Fredrick Scott. She graduated from South Burlington High
School in 1966. On March 2, 1974, she married Guy L. Southwell, and
together they began 27 years of marriage, friendship and faithful
companionship. Constance dedicated her life to her family and home and
will be remembered for her wit, her quiet compassion, and her strength
of character and spirit. She was a caregiver to the ailing, a friend and
confidante to children, and a rescuer of homeless pets. She opened her
heart and home to foster children andfriends of her own children, and
she provided solace and shelter for all who came in contact with her.
Constance enjoyed gardening and reading, and on summer evenings could be
found taking sunset walks along the bike path with her adopted cats,
Inte and Mina. Constance leaves behind her husband, partner and friend,
Guy Southwell; two children, Heather and Kyle Southwell; a brother,
Richard Scott; her father, Fredrick Scott; many aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews and cousins; and two special friends, Marlene Beaudoin and
Shirley Calevro, who offered Constance friendship and hope in her most
difficult times. On Constance’s behalf, her family would like to thank
the staff and volunteers at the Vermont Respite House who protected,
cared for and comforted Constance in her final days, and who
demonstrated the beauty and sanctity of love through service. A
Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday,

Center on April 20, 2001. He was born in Middlebury on July 31, 1910.
Frank was a longtime resident of Burlington and a well-known Church
Street fixture. He was often seen on Church Street socializing, pushing
his shopping cart, which he used to help himself get around, and playing
the harmonica. Most days he had breakfast at Woolworth’s. Frank was an
"independent thinker, an advocate for his own perception of
rights’. He wore hats at all times, often at a jaunty angle. He was a
coffee drinker and donut eater extraordinaire.’ Frank leaves many
friends in the Burlington area including special friends Darlene,
Dennis, and several others at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation
Center. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Boucher

three sons, Dan of Seattle, Wash., Steve and his wife, Jennifer, of East
Lansing, Mich., and Jeff and his wife, Rebecca, of Vancouver, Wash. One
of the joys of the last month was meeting his newborn twin
grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Nichols of East Lansing. Don is also
survived by his sisters Sylvia Allen of Essex Junction, Mary Lou Stanley
of Norfolk, Va.; brothers, Ralph Nichols of Andover, Ohio and David
Nichols of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, Jim Walker; and numerous nieces
and nephews. Don was born in Enosburg Falls and grew up on a farm in the
area. He graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1957 and moved to
southern California where he attended junior college. It was there that
Don met Elizabeth Ann (Sue) Walker and they married in 1965. They
relocated to San Jose, where Don graduated with a degree in accounting
from San Jose State University in 1967. At San Jose State he was a
member of the Beta Alpha Psi Honorary Accounting Society. After
graduation, Don began his accounting career with Arthur Andersen and
became a Certified Public Accountant. He later left the public
accounting sector and functioned as a corporate controller. At the time
of his death, Don was controller for Golden Gate Technologies, a
California corporation that provides wireless solutions for enterprise
companies. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants and the California Society of CPAs. While raising three sons
in the Almaden area of San Jose, Don coached Little League and was
active with the YMCA Indian Guides. He enjoyed sports, camping,
traveling with his family and friends, and for many years participated
in a slow-pitch softball league. He was an active member of The Church
of the Chimes and was a deacon there for four years. Don will be greatly
missed by his family, friends, and many business associates. Friends are
invited to attend a memorial celebration of Don’s life on Saturday,
April 28, at 4 p.m. at The Church of the Chimes. A reception will follow

Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Northwestern Medical Center, following a
brief illness. He was born in Newport Town on Nov.10, 1915, the son of
Harley and Maud (Besaw) Collins. He attended schools in Newport Town and
Westfield, and was active in the Westfield Congregational Church as a
young man. Following his retirement in 1976 from Butterfield Division of
Litton Industries, he moved from his farm in Lowell to Morrisville, and
in July, 2000, he and his wife relocated to Swanton. He was an avid
gardener and was especially proud of his many years harvesting Christmas
trees to be sold throughout the United States. He was a member of the
Northeast Fiddlers’ Association and the Westfield Congregational Church.
He served as a judge at the Craftsbury and Hardwick Fiddlers’ contests
and enjoyed entertaining family, friends and senior citizens with his
”old-time fiddling.” On Feb. 24, 1940 he married Shirley Willis, who
survives him. He is also survived by two sons, Donald and his wife,
Susan, of Swanton, and Russell and his wife, Therese, of Fairlee; one
daughter, Linda Jackman and her husband, Dean, of Colchester;
grandchildren Stephanie Phillips and her husband, Patrick, Gary Collins
and his wife, Ammie, Kristina Collins and her husband, David, Brian
Collins and his wife, Lourdes, Greg Collins and his wife, Jennifer, Tom
Jackman and Sam Jackman; his great-grandchildren Troy, Tara, McKenzie

22, 2001, in St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was
born Nov. 29, 1930, in Hardwick, the daughter of Reed D. and Glenna
(Bailey) Hopkins. She attended Hardwick public schools, and graduated
from the Hardwick Academy, Class of 1948. In her earlier years she was
employed by West Department Store in Hardwick. She was a part-time mail
carrier, and she owned and operated the Hopkins family farm for many
years retiring in the early 1990s. Rhoda was a member of the United
Church of Hardwick, the Womens Fellowship, Circle 8, of the church, and
the Mackville Home Dem. Other interests included caring for flowers and
plants. She and her companion, John George, built summer camps on East
Long Pond, Nichols Pond, and Coits Pond, where they spent many hours of
enjoyment. Survivors include a brother, R Hopkins of Hardwick; and
several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister,
Ruby Perry, in 1999, and her companion, John George, in 1988. There will
be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 28,
at 2:00 in the United Church in Hardwick, with the Rev. June Totten
officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in the Fairview

up in the New York City area and came to Vermont in 1947, when Howard
joined the faculty of the University of Vermont. They were very active
in several churches and helped to found the North Avenue Christian and
Missionary Alliance Church. Hazel was a church organist and taught music
both in the Colchester schools and privately. Hazel leaves her children
and their spouses, Marjorie and David Waggy of Waterford, Va., Jean and
Alan Holmes of Burlington, and Ruth and Geoffrey Anderson of Cincinnati,
Ohio; her grandchildren and their spouses, Adam and Robbi Holmes of
Rotterdam, N.Y., Christie Holmes of Burlington, Heather Anderson of
Charleston, S.C., Jason and Kristi Anderson of Edelstein, Ill., and
Kathryn and Scott McAlpine of Virginia; her great-grandchildren,

Hospital in Clovis, Calif. She lived in Covina, Calif., from 1953 until
September 2001, when she moved to Fresno, Calif., to be closer to her brother
and family. She was in an assisted-care facility until April 17, when she was
moved to the Clovis facility. She had been diagnosed with ALS She is survived
by a sister, Frances Culver; and two brothers, Harold Bergeron and his wife,
Mary, of Essex Junction, and Wilfred Bergeron and his wife, Virginia, of
Fresno; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in
Essex Junction on May 14, 2001, at 7 p.m. in the First Congregational Church.

unexpectedly Monday, April 23, 2001. Born in Montpelier on Nov. 19,
1963, he was the son of Richard and Nancy (Eastman) Aylward of Duxbury.
Todd was a 1981 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury. He
also attended Champlain College in Burlington. As a young man, he worked
with his family for the Crystal Ice Co. of Waterbury. He later worked as
a carpenter in the central and northern Vermont areas. Most recently, he
was the owner of the Aylward Stone and Tile Co. of Middlesex. Todd was a
uniquely talented craftsman. His stone and tile work can be seen in
homes and buildings throughout Vermont and New York. His memberships
included the Waterbury-Stowe Fish and Game Club, the LCI fishing derby,
the Waterbury Ambulance Service. His leisure time was spent enjoying
hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time at his camp in Morgan.
He is survived by his fiancee, Fonda Papineau of Middlesex; his
daughter, Cassandra Aylward of Moretown; his parents of Duxbury; two
sisters, Kim Jones and her husband, Todd, of Waterbury Center, and Katie
Wells and her husband, Shannon, of Duxbury; two brothers, Darrin Aylward
and his partner, Jennifer Grace, of Duxbury, and Toby Aylward of
Waterbury, a stepson, Shawn Papineau of Waterbury; a stepdaughter, Tanya
Jarvis and her husband, Jason, of Waterbury; a stepgranddaughter,
Savannah Papineau of Waterbury; a special aunt, Lorraine Fava of

was a loving and caring father for his daughter, Cassandra, and he had a

GEORGIA — Mrs. Patricia M. Bernard

Fletcher Allen Health Care following a brief illness. She was born in
St. Albans on Sept. 7, 1932, to the late Leo D. and Dora (Germain)
Berthiaume. Patricia graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1950. She
retired from IBM in 1993. She had also worked for many years at Verdelle
Village Nursing Home, and with her husband, Donald, on the
""Horseshoe Farm"" in Georgia. In 1952, Pat married
Donald E. Bernard. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and a
participant in the Perpetual Adoration Society along with her husband.
Family and friends meant everything to Pat; she loved us all and we will
miss her dearly. She always took great pride in her holiday and Sunday
afternoon family meals. She was an avid fiddler enthusiast, a member of
the Northeast Fiddlers Association, and piano accompanist. Pat also
loved to entertain fiddling friends. Friday night jam sessions with her
devoted husband, Don, and cherished friends and family over the past 20
years will long be remembered. Besides her loving husband of 48 years,
she is survived by her three sons, Randall and his wife, Gail, of
Jonesville, Timothy of Georgia, John and his wife, Karen, of St. Albans;
three sisters-in-law Marilyn Berthiaume of St. Albans, Maxine Thompson
of St. Joseph, Mo., and Barbara Bernard of Burlington; four
grandchildren, Jim Fulcher of Washington, Iowa, and Samantha, Donald and
Kenneth Bernard of St. Albans; several nieces, nephews,and cousins and
many special fiddling friends. She was predeceased by her parents; two
daughters, Donna Lynn in 1959 and Patty Ann in 1965; a sister, Alma

""Ginny"" Richards on Aug. 18, 1950. Mr. Gonyeau was
a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He had worked for
G.S. Blodgett, Velan Valve, and Wyeth Nutritionals. In addition to his
wife, Ginny of Milton, Bill is survived by his children, Carol Mable and
her husband, Bruce, of North Fayston, Sharon Pedrick and her husband,
Richard Jr., of Rochester, N.H., Richard Gonyeau and his wife, Robin, of
Milton, Brenda Wallace of Berlin, N.H. and Sheila Reagan and her
husband, Brian, of Indialantic, Fla.; six grandchildren; a brother,

Milton, died unexpectedly Monday, April 23, 2001 at Fletcher Allen
Health Care in Burlington. She was born August 19, 1928, the daughter of
the late Richard W. and Lillian B. (Richards) O’Donnell. She was raised
and lived her entire life in Milton. As a young woman, Eileen was a
journalist for the Burlington Daily News and worked several years at
Doolin’s Department Store in St. Albans. Eileen served her community in
many different areas including the Milton PTA, Mother’s Club, The Legion
Auxiliary, and Chittenden Chapter 59 Order of the Eastern Stars. Most
recently she enjoyed being an active member of the Milton Senior Center
and the Milton Historical Society. Later in life, Eileen cared for and
was the companion to many of our communities elderly. She is survived by
her former husband Neil E. King, and their six children; Stuart and his
wife, Sheryl, of Burlington, Brenda Stewart of Shelburn, Darryl of
Gainsville, Va., Kevin of Underhill, Stephen of Colchester, Lisa Trkulja
of Colchester; her thirteen precious granchildren, Shelby, Shaun and
Shannon King and their spouses, Heather Ferrara and William Bartlett and
their spouses, Andrew Stewart, Sara Lowell and her spouse, Darrell and
his spouse, Adam, Lia and Therese King, and Bradley and Brittany Trkulja;

2001, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born in Cambridge on
October 26, 1903, the daughter of Edgar and Alma (Child) Scott. Ellen
graduated from Johnson High School in 1921 and Johnson Normal School in
1926. She taught elementary school in Eden and at the Calvery
Preventorium, a tuberculosis hospital in Pittsford. She was a substitute
ral mail carrier in Johnson from 1950 to 1964. She was a member of the
United Church of Johnson and the Order of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies
were gardening, reading, bird feeding and spending time with family. On
October 2, 1926, she married Donald W. Manley in Franklin, who
predeceased her in 1989. She is survived by three sons and their wives,
Donald W. and Mary (Eide) Manley Jr. of Escondido, Calif, Richard A. and
Jeannine (Codin) Manley of Hendersonville, N.C., and John S. and Donna
(Christian) Manley of South Burlington; two sisters, Ruth (Scott)

20, 1927, the daughter of the late Arthur and Elfie (Monroe) Crandall.
She had been employed as the head cook at the Howard Johnson Restaurant
for over 25 years. She is survived by her son, Jack A. Ploof of North
Ferrisburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a step son,
Robert Ploof of Saratoga Springs N.Y.; four sisters, Katie Keyes of
Manchester, Florence Capen of Shaftsbury, Sara Townsley of Manchester,
and Christina Bushman of Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her husband, Loyal, in 1978; her daughter, Marcia, in
1998; and her son, Loyal Jr., in 2000. Funeral services will be Friday,

23, 2001, in Pleasant Bay Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in
Brewster after a long illness. She was the widow of Frederick I. Rogers,
who died in 1973. Born and educated in Windsor, Conn., Mrs. Rogers was
the daughter of Clinton Porter Gregg and Emily Frances Gregg. She lived
in Manchester, Conn., until 1969, when she and Mr. Rogers moved to West
Dennis. She moved to Harwich Port in 1986. In Manchester, she was an
active member of South United Methodist Church and worked for many years
at the Lappen Insurance Agency. Upon moving to Massachusetts, she became
an active member of Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port. She
was also a member of the Harwich-Dennis Branch of the Cape Cod Hospital
Auxiliary and the Garden Club of Harwich. She leaves two daughters,
Janis R. Latham of Brewster and Jean R. Pilcher of Burlington, Vt.,
formerly of Wellfleet, Mass.; a sister, June G. Shafer of Windsor,
Conn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and a nephew. A celebration of her life will be held in early
summer on a date to be announced. Friends may make gifts in her memory

WAITSFIELD — William E. "Bill” Austin

Tuesday, April 24, 2001. Born in East Orange, N.J., on April 17, 1930,
he was the son of the late William B. Austin and Isabel (Luckey) Austin.
April 24, 1975, he married the former Ellen Meyer in Summit, N.J. He was
previously married to the former Roberta Florin of Belle Vista, Ark.
William was a graduate of Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. William
served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy. After his
discharge from the Navy, he returned to New Jersey, working for many
years as co-owner with his brother, Peter, of the Caroline Dry Cleaners
and Rub-A-Dub laundries. William moved to Waitsfield in 1978 and started
the Black Sheep Farm, where he and his wife bred and raised Suffolk
sheep for 17 years. William was past president of the Vermont Sheep
Breeders Association and director of the Lake Champlain chapter of the
Antique and Classic Boat Society. His memberships included the Couples
Club and the American Legion Unit 75, both of Waitsfield. He is survived
by his wife of Waitsfield; a son, William Robert Austin and his wife,
Samantha, of Durham, N.C.; five daughters, Christine Haworth and her
husband, BJ, of Clearwater, Fla., Lynn Schilling and her husband,
Richard, of South Burlington, Cynthia Rademacher and her husband, Greg,
of Long Valley, N.J., Pamela Falcone and her husband, Christopher, of
Morris Plains, N.Y., and Melissa Follett of Parker, Colo.; a brother,
Peter Austin and his wife, Marilyn, of New Jersey and Florida; four

died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston
following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Bridgewater
on Jan. 18, 1943, the daughter of Louis and Carrie (Baker) Gould.
Patricia was married in Rutland on Feb. 24, 1962, to Wayne Berry. She
held many jobs in the community throughout her working years, her most
recent being in the cafeteria at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Fanny Allen
campus. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Barnet,
VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Essex Junction and the RVA. Patricia was an avid
bowler and bingo player. She enjoyed her grandchildren, traveling,
especially to Arizona, caring for others, and was a devoted friend to
many. Her most treasured moments were spent watching the sunset on her
boat with her devoted husband. Patricia’s family would like to thank all
of you who supported her and us during this difficult time. A very

House for all the care and support you gave us. She is survived by her

NORTHFIELD — Julia Whitney Woods McIntire
....show , 96, longtime resident of Northfield, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at
her home on Central Street. She was born March 6, 1905, in Rindge, N.H.
She was the adopted daughter of Dr. Fred and Mary (Jordan) Woods. She
was a graduate of Portland (Maine) High School. She attended one year at
MacDuffe School for Girls in Springfield, Mass.; then earned a
bachelor’s degree from Vassar College. She continued her education at
Shaw Business College in Portland. In 1974, she was awarded an honorary
master’s degree in literature from Norwich University. July 1, 1936, she
married Sumner H. McIntire in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. In August, they
moved to Northfield, when her husband joined the Norwich University
physics department faculty. She taught several years at the high school
level and two years at Westbrook Junior College in Portland. Mrs.
McIntire was an extremely active volunteer for many causes and
organizations. She was quite active with children’s programs at the
Northfield schools, the United Church youth activities and the Girl
Scouts. She was with the Red Cross for 25 years, a member of the Mayo
Hospital Auxiliary; she helped with the merger of the Mayo Hospital
Auxiliary with the Central Vermont Hospital Auxiliary and was the first
combined member; she was past president of the state of Vermont Hospital
Auxiliary and past director of the Washington County Mental Health
Association. In later years, she enjoyed researching and writing about
the history of Northfield. She was published many times in the
Northfield News and was instrumental in the development and writing of
""Green Mountain Heritage,” an extensive town history. She
later collaborated with Richard Cleveland in the photographic history of
Northfield entitled ""Picture Northfield.” She edited and
annotated memories written in the William Hassett book,
""While I Remember.” Volumes of Mrs. McIntire’s historical
notes have been put into the historical files at the society’s Paine
House. Her work was recognized April 18 by the state of Vermont’s
Historical Society and the League of Local Historical Societies; they
awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions
to the Northfield Historical Society and the community of Northfield.
She was a member of St. Mary Episcopal Church in Northfield, Northfield
Historical Society, Northfield Ladies Reading Circle and Northfield
Senior Citizens. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Sumner of
Northfield; two daughters, Nancy Stevens and her husband, Harold, of
Hardwick, and Mary Moberly and her husband, Verne, of West Townshend;
four grandchildren, Dean Hill and his wife, Ann, Dianne LaCasse, Janet
Hill and her husband, Harold, and Clay Hill; 11 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. McIntire was
predeceased by two brothers. There are no public calling hours. A
memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 27, at 10 a.m. in St.
Mary Episcopal Church on South Main Street in Northfield. Burial will
take place in Mount Hope Cemetery in Northfield. In lieu of flowers,

Mr. Dubois was a retired security guard. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran

Burlington schools and worked in the American Woolen Mill, where he
became acquainted with his future wife, the former Helen M. Lister. They
were married on Aug. 30, 1947. He served honorably with the Vermont Army
National Guard, and for over 20 years was employed with the Burlington
Street Department. He later worked as a mechanic at Lake View Buick.
Walt was a long-time usher and parishioner at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral
and was a former member of the D.A.V. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
bowling and his family very much. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Helen
M. Burbo of Burlington; nine children and their spouses, Walter J. Bbo
Jr. of St. George, Ann and Rodney Terry of Hinesburg, Mary Lou and Allen

Hartford, Conn., and was married for 58 years to John Clifford
FitzGerald, who passed away April 16, 2000. She was the daughter of Mary
and Joseph Moran, and was the loving older sister to Philip and Rita.
She was class valedictorian of Buckley High School in Hartford, and
graduated from St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford, Conn. Ginny lived
in Farmington, Conn., Hartford, and West Hartford before retiring from
Connecticut Bank and Trust to Middlebury. She spent her last two years
in the loving environment of The Arbors in Shelburne. Ginny is survived
by her brother, Philip Moran of West Hartford,; her six children and
their spouses, Susan Dillon and her husband, Terry, of Sharon, Mass.,
Sharon Carey and her husband, Ted, of Boston,Mass., Carol FitzGerald and

Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Born Dec. 6, 1927, in East Tops- ham, he
was the son of Henry Eugene and Nellie Lucille (Orcutt) Hood. He
attended East Barre School and Spaulding High School. Later, he received
a bachelor of arts in accounting from Champlain College in Burlington.
Sept. 12, 1953, he married Beverly E. Jones in the East Barre
Congregational Church. Following their marriage, they made their home in
East Barre. After receiving his accounting degree, he worked for the
Vermont Tax Department as an auditor until his retirement in 1990.
Besides his wife of East Barre, survivors include two sons, Gregory
Hood, and John Hood Jr. and his wife, Diane, all of Barre; three
daughters, Gail Bessette of Berlin, Jean Perrigo and her husband,
Michael, and Maria Hood, all of Barre; 10 grandchildren; a
great-grandson; a sister, Jean Clark of Barre; and nieces and nephews. A
brother, Hadley Hood, predeceased him. A service of remembrance will be
held Monday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the East Barre Congregational

SWANTON — Richard "Ricky” Lorreen Dumont
....show , 49, a lifelong resident of this
community, died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in
Burlington. Ricky was born in St. Albans on Jan. 22, 1952, the son of
Russell and Selina (Meissner) Dumont. He attended St. Anne Academy and
Swanton High School. June 29, 1974, he married the former Kathy
Thompson, who survives him. Prior to his illness, Ricky was associated
with Vermont Brick Co. in Highgate. He had also previously worked for
many years at Brown’s Foundry in Swanton. He was a member of the Abenaki
Nation of Vermont and in earlier years was employed as head of its
maintenance department. He was a lifelong parishioner of the Church of
the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ricky will always be remembered
as an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a special love for walleye
fishing and camping with his family. He will be greatly missed by
Brandon. He leaves his wife, Kathy Dumont, his father and mother,
Russell and Selina Dumont, all of Swanton; his daughter, Rachel Dumont
of Swanton and her friend, Casey Le- Grand of St. Albans; two sons, Chad
Dumont and his wife, Stacey, of Swanton, and Russell Dumont of Swanton
and his friend, Morgan Barnum of Highgate; a brother, Randy Dumont and
his wife, Peggy, of Swanton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Brian
and Cathy Thompson, Judy Thompson and her friend, Larry King, and Butch
Thompson, all of Swanton. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Brandon,
Kyle, and Brittany Dumont; nieces Kelsey and Kyla Dumont, and his
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bernard and Betty Thompson, all of
Swanton; his godchild, James Collins of Islen, N.J.; and several aunts,
uncles, cousins and many friends. A brother-in-law, ""Dickie”
Thompson, predeceased him in March 1978, his grandfather and
grandmother, Herman and Esther Meissner. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Nativity
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Interment will
follow in the Dumont family lot in St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call

BURLINGTON — Bailey R. Frank

Johnsbury, passed away in Fletcher Allen Health Care on April 27, 2001,
after a brief illness. Bailey was born in Rutland on April 21, 1914, the
son of Samuel Frank and Anna Goldstone Frank. He attended Rutland
schools and the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II as a quartermaster. For more than 50 years he wrote
the column ""The Skies today,” for newspapers all over the
U.S. and Canada. He was always a friend to people in need and often
visited folks in nursing homes. He is survived by five children, Dorothy
Perkins of St. Albans, Carol Jones of Port S. Lucie, Fla., Samuel W.
Frank of New Castle, Va., Michael Frank of Florence, Ariz., and Phyllis
Parent of Essex Junction; nine grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be a

NEWPORT — William A. Green Sr.
....show , 86, of Newport passed away Friday, April 27, 2001, after a
short illness. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Nov. 22, 1914, the son
of Andrew and Gertrude (Fairfield) Green. Bill had made his home in
Newport with his wife, Shirley, who predeceased him in January, for more
than 35 years. He was a member of Memphremagog Lodge 65 F&AM, and a
past member of the Newport Elks Club. Through the years, Bill was an
ardent outdoorsman. He was a ski instructor at both Pico and Suicide Six
ski areas and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and family at
his camp at Lewis Pond, which he owned for more than 38 years. Bill was
also an avid bowler in his younger years and took home many championship
trophies. Bill joined the Vermont State Police in 1947 and was the last
of the original 25 officers who made up that organization. Besides being
one of the first troopers, he was also the first to have a working
police dog, which was the start of the present canine units. He retired
as a lieutenant in 1970. Shortly after that, he won election for sheriff
of Orleans County, and it was under his direction that the department
started growing to what it is today. In 1939, he and Ruth Akey, who
predeceased him in 1958, were married. They had four sons. Survivors
include Delwyn and his wife, Nancy, of Derby, William Jr. and his wife,
Susan, of Gainesville, Fla., Robert and his wife, Joan, of Newport, and
Richard and his wife, Cam, of Derby. Bill married Shirley Newton Young
in 1959 and gained another son, David Young and his friend, Elizabeth
Gamage, of Falmouth Forside, Maine; and a daughter, Sandra Fowler and
her husband, Jack, of Wayne, Maine, who survive him. He is also survived
by his grandchildren, Shawn of Derby, Shane of Derby Line, Travis of St.
Petersburg, Fla., Trace of Ocala, Fla., Derek of Kissimmee, Fla., Tyler
of Jay, Sawyer and Saigelyn of Derby, and Sasha of Philadelphia; eight
great-grandchildren; a brother, Gordon of South Royalton; and many
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
He thought a lot of his friends, Jerry and Lillian Dickerman, Ray and
Elsie Ladue, Dean and Olive Gardner, and the rest of the "’Pine
Street Gang;” also Ross and Lillian Whippel, Paula Thibodeau and Nadine
Thomas, all of the surrounding Newport area. Calling hours will be held
at the Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Tuesday, May 1. Funeral services will be held in the United Church
of Derby with the Rev. Fred Barker officiating at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May

WAITSFIELD — Edith T. Howard
....show , 95, passed away in Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Friday,
April 27, 2001. Born in Waitsfield on June 13, 1925, she was the
daughter of the late Wesley Wells Tucker and Flora (Lovett) Tucker. July
22, 1925, she married Frank S. Howard in Waitsfield. Mr. Howard passed
away May 20, 1970. Edith was a graduate of the former Waitsfield High
School, Class of 1922. She continued her education at Randolph Normal
School. She began her teaching career in Moretown at the former Flanagan
School. She taught briefly in Fayston and Warren schools. She spent the
majority of her teaching career in Waitsfield, where she taught
elementary school. She had a career in education that spanned 38 years,
retiring in 1971. She was a past member of the former Maple Rebekah
Lodge 56 of Waitsfield, of which she was past noble grand. She enjoyed
gardening, cooking and taking care of her home. She is survived by her
son, Robert L. Howard of Waitsfield; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Tucker of
Waitsfield; and two nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and two
brothers, Edmond W. Tucker and Ernest A. Tucker. Funeral services will
be held from the United Church of Christ in Waits- field on Tuesday at 2
p.m. There will be no calling hours. Interment will follow in Irasville

in Copley Hospital in Morrisville following a long illness. She was born
in Elmore on July 3, 1917, the daughter of Julian and Beulah (Bailey)
Gay. Because of family circumstances, Elizabeth, at an early age, had to
help raise and care for her family. July 8, 1933, she married Edward E.
Jones. He predeceased her in February 1983. Elizabeth always provided a
warm and loving home for her family and will always be remembered as a
loving and dedicated mother and grandmother. She is survived by two
daughters, Milda Carpenter of Hyde Park and Lucille Taft of Wolcott; a
son and his wife, Kenneth and Suzanne Jones of Hyde Park; two sisters,
Bernice Robinson of Castleton, N.Y., and Phyllis Jones of Morrisville;
10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren;
and special neighbors and friends, Doris Judkins, Barbara Russ, Jean
DeMag, and Philip Brown. Elizabeth was predeceased by a son, David, and
sons-in-law Heber Taft and Ira Allen Carpenter. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, in the Second Congregational Church of

....show , 80, died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Verdelle Village ECF
in St. Albans. He was born in St. Cuthbert, Quebec, the son of the late
Mastai and Areslie (Gregoire) Paquette. At a very young age, John and
his family immigrated to the United States in the 1920s, where the
family made their home in Franklin. He later became a naturalized
citizen and married the love of his life, Alice M. Laroche, on July 21,
1945. John and Alice had a joyous marriage of 52 years, which ended with
her death June 3, 1997. He was a dairy farmer during the early years of
his marriage, when he and his wife lived in Franklin and East Fairfield.
He left farming, moving to the village of Bakersfield with his young
family, which at the time consisted of his wife, three sons and a
daughter. He worked as a sawmill laborer for approximately 16 years for
the former Penders Mill of Bakersfield and Lamell Lumber in Essex. He
later became a pulp mill worker in 1970, for the former Missisquoi
Specialty Board Division, later called Boise Cascade, located in Sheldon
Springs. He retired from Boise in December 1983. For many years, he
worked part-time for the town of Bakersfield as the Bakersfield Town
Hall custodian and the Maple Grove Cemetery groundskeeper. He continued
to work as the custodian of the Bakersfield Town Clerk’s Office during
his retirement years, until the year 2000. John was a communicant of St.
Anthony/St. George parishes of East Fairfield and Bakersfield. He
enjoyed gardening and spending time with his children and their spouses,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved animals and enjoyed the
frequent visits made by his canine friends, Puddles, Max, Cole, Marty
and Pierre. He is survived by four sons and their wives, Denis and
Debbie Paquette, Clement and Charmaine Paquette, and Rosaire and Donna
Paquette, all of Bakersfield, and Gabriel and Sue Paquette of Enosburg
Falls; four daughters, Marie Charbonneau and her husband, Ivan, of St.
Albans, Helen Spencer and her husband, David, of Bakersfield, Noella
Paquette of Charlotte, N.C., and Anna Noonan and her husband, Andrew, of
Franklin; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; three
brothers and their wives, Henry and Margaret Paquette, and Gerard and
Therese Paquette, all of Richford, and Paul and Doris Paquette of Red
Hook, N.Y.; two sisters, Blanche Lessard of Richford and Dorilla Larose
of White River Junction; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Paquette of
Richford and Mariange Paquette of Franklin; and several nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (Laroche) Paquette, on
June 3, 1997; five sisters, Lucienne Coulombe, Margaret Vien, Jeanne
Duranleau, Marie Couture, and Marie Louise Martin; and three brothers,
Lucien, Victor, and Joseph Paquette. Funeral services will be held
Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfield with the
Rev. Pete Williams and the Rev. Leonidas Laroche concelebrating the Mass
of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in

MILTON — Paul Christian Paulsen

unexpectedly April 27, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in
Burlington. Paul was born May 29, 1920, in Boston, Mass., the son of
Paul Christian and Ruth Johnson Paulsen. Nov. 9, 1950, he married Kay
Delaney in St. Aloysius Church in St. Johnsbury. She predeceased him
March 29, 1975. In 1980, he was married to Jane Racine in St. Ann Church
in Milton, and she predeceased him in 1984. Paul was a World War II
veteran, having served in central Europe with the U.S. Army. Following
his discharge from the service, he was employed at Pratt-Whitney
Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., retiring in 1970. He then moved to
Vermont and was the cook at the Clover House Restaurant at Malletts Bay,
where his first wife, Kay, was the pianist. His final retirement came in
1984 from the U.S. Postal Service for which he was a rural mailman in
Williston. Dad was a lifelong lover of animals, plants, flowers and
reading. One of his favorite pastimes was riding his Harley. He took
many trips on his ""hog” to Laconia, N.H., among other
places. He especially enjoyed one trip he made to the Sturgis, S.D.,
50th anniversary motorcycle rally with his daughter, Erin-Jane, in 1988.
Paul’s amazing recovery from a leg amputation and stroke in 1996 was
testimony to his strength and fervor for life. His beloved canine
companion, Daisy, aided in his recovery and had been a huge part of his
life in recent years; she will miss him greatly. Paul had many, many
friends from all walks of life. He was a wonderful dad who was very
involved with his children; he taught us well and provided us with much
laughter in our lives. Godspeed Dad/Poppa, until we meet again. We love
you. Paul is survived by his five daughters, Kathi Sawicky of
Chesapeake, Va., Connie Paulsen of Essex Junction, Christine Paulsen of
Portsmouth, Va., Karin Paulsen of Milton, and Erin-Jane Paulsen of
Milton; six grandchildren, Joan, Bill, and Jennifer Hartigan of
Connecticut, Maren and Matthew Paulsen of Virginia, and Derek Desranleau
of Milton; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Brittny,
Michael, and Brenda, all of Connecticut. He was predeceased by two
daughters, Karen Paulsen and Frances Hartigan, and his brother, Henry
Paulsen. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. in
St. Ann Church in Milton. Interment will be held Thursday, May 3, at 2

Healthcare. Born Jan. 26, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Azro
and Anna (Beatty) Aseltine. Esther was a lifelong resident of
Burlington. She was an agent for North American Accident Insurance
Company for 39 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church
and was active in several of its groups. She was a charter member of
Wesleyan Service Guild,, United Methodist Women, Y Business Girls’ Club,
Christian Women’s Club and the Anne Morris Circle of The King’s
Daughters and Sons. During the 1970s and 1980s, she cared for her aging
and infirm mother while continuing to run her insurance agency. Esther
is survived by nieces Betty and Ruth Aseltine of South Burlington; two
nephews, Jim and his wife, Lorraine Aseltine, of Lombard, Ill., and
Harold and Jean Aseltine of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and their children
and grandchildren; and many cousins. She was predeceased by a brother,
Ken and his wife, Grace; and a nephew, Robert. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday, May 2, at 1 p.m. in the funeral chapel of Corbin and

Center, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the Fir Lane Convalescent
Center in Shelton, Wash. Born in Bolton on Dec. 5, 1926, she was the
daughter of the late Clarence and Edith (Minkler) Champney. She was married
to Ralph Baker who predeceased her on June 10, 1989. Lorraine worked for
many years as a restaurant manager at Casa Di Barons in Cleveland, Ohio. Her
leisure time was filled enjoying her grandchildren, gardening and traveling.
She is survived by her children, Denise Rescina of Cleveland and Fred Baker
of Shelton,; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Owen
Champney; and two sisters, Helen Smith and Trena Eberhardt. Graveside
services will be held in Hope Cemetery in Waterbury on Friday, May 4 at 2

ST. ALBANS — Cecile (Rocheleau) Deslauriers

cardiovascular disease and cancer. Born Cecile Rocheleau on Feb. 22,
1928, in Essex Junction, she was the daughter of the late Louis and
Adeline (Nichols) Rocheleau. She worked for 26 years at Union Carbide.
She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church, a member of the Ladies of
St. Anne and a former Senior Regent for the Women of the Moose, Chapter
321. Some of her happiest years were during the time she was the cook at
the Moose. She loved to dance, play cards, attend conventions, travel
and, most of all, cook for her family and friends. She had a zest for
life and was adventuresome. She will be remembered by her family for her
generosity and boundless love. She is survived by her husband of 52
years, Leo Deslauriers; their four children, David and his wife, Janice,
of South Burlington, Michael and his wife, Leean of St. Albans, Donna of
St. Albans, and Mark of Ipswich, Mass.; six grandchildren, David Jr.,
Dan, Jeff, Nichole, Joseph, and Marcel; two brothers, George and his
wife, Harriet Rocheleau, and Ernest and his wife, Gertrude Rocheleau;
four sisters, Hortense Levesque, Carita and her husband, Roger Cadieux,
Corrine Rocheleau, and Rita and her husband, Wayne Sweeney; two
sisters-in-law, Geraldine Rocheau and Mary Jane and her husband, Walter
Kerr; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by

born in Castleton on Dec. 8, 1910, son of Daniel and Florence (Hart)
Fish. He was a graduate of Fair Haven High School. He was married in
1940 in Fair Haven to Mary C. Prunier. He was employed for many years at
General Electric and retired in 1973. Howard was an avid golfer who
enjoyed playing and working at the Rocky Ridge Golf Club. He is survived
by his wife of 61 years, Mary Fish of Colchester; 11 children, Daniel
Fish of Burlington, Mary Alapa of New London, Conn., Kathaleen Bordeau
of Stowe, Marjorie Fish, Ph.D., of St. Cloud, Minn., Frances Rutstein of
Haverhill, N.H., Hazel Chauvin of Rocky Mount, N.C., Ellen Haselman of
Franklin, Howard Fish of St. Albans, David Fish of Bedford, N.H., Carol

following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Burlington on
June 25, 1959, the daughter of Paul and Jacqueline (Gay) Leclair. She
was a graduate of Rice Memorial High School, Class of 1977. Oct. 4,
1980, she married Joseph Ploof in St. Joseph Church in Burlington. Alice
was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister. She loved spending time
with her family, walks and snowmobiling with her husband. She also
enjoyed flower gardening and would press her flowers often. She will be
missed by all of those whom she so loved and touched. She is survived by
her husband, Joseph; their seven children, Farrah, Sharrah, Alyshia,
Kody, Jesse, Chelsa, and Briena, all of North Ferrisburg; a grandson,
Noah; a stepson, Jason Hurlburt; her parents, Paul and Jackie Leclair of
Burlington; brothers and sisters Paul Leclair Jr., Mary Leclair, and

Manchester (N.H.) West High School and was most recently employed by Ben
and Jerry’s in Williston. An avid racing fan, Michael enjoyed following
the NASCAR circuit. Sept. 12, 1987, he was married to Carrie Jane Clough
in Binghamtom, N.Y. Michael is survived by his wife, Carrie; and their
children, Matthew, Michala, and Jacob, all of Milton; his father, Joseph
Rigoli and his wife, Kim, of Owego, N.Y.; and his mother, Diane Akerly
and her husband, Kim, of Seabrook, N.H.; his grandfather, Joseph Rigoli
Sr. of Waltham, Mass.; two sisters, Michelle Streeter of Seabrook, N.H.,
and Brittany Jo Rigoli of Owego; a brother, Anthony Rigoli, also of
Owego; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He also
leaves his children’s godparents, Pat and Jim Purcell of Merrimack, N.H.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the
Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton. Burial will be held at a later date

Gaysville; her mother, Lillian Waite of Agawam, Mass.; six children and
their spouses, Diana LeClair of Morrisville, Kim Ennis and Wayne of
Plainfield, Andrew Staples and Deanna of Waterville, Stacey Audet of
Morrisville, David M. Knight and Kathy of Jeffersonville, and Robyn and
Steven O’Hearn of Waterville; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a

clerk with McAuliffe’s Wholesale for many years and later retired from Hagar

Health Care. She was born in Burlington on Oct. 15, 1909, the daughter of
Edward and Antoinette (Methe) Couture. Mrs. Rostkowski was a homemaker and
nursing assistant. She was a life-long parishioner of St. Joseph
Co-Cathedral and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and the
Confraternity St. Joseph. She enjoyed landscape painting and attending the
Champlain Senior Citizen Center. She also had many good memories of the
sewing circles she participated in when she was younger. Jeanne leaves three
children, Greta A. Hebert of Daytona Beach, Fla., Charles and his wife,
Cynthia Rostkowski, of Ogden, Utah, and Bernice and her husband, Jim
Hammond, of Cocoa, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; several great- and
great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Sister Blanche Couture of the Sisters
of St. Joseph; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased
by her husband, Adam Edward Rostkowski, and her sister, Delores Peccini. A
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral on
Friday at 9 a.m. with interment following in New Mount Calvary Cemetery.

2001, in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in
Brighton on May 8, 1943, the son of Harold and Ella Mae (Judd) Willey Sr.
His partner in life, his rock and dedicated wife of 35 years, Linda Jean
Brown, married David on Sept. 18, 1965. For the past 31 years, David had
been a dedicated employee of Pike Industries, currently serving as foreman
of the Johnson Asphalt Plant 807. David was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed
hunting, fishing and, most dear to his heart, rabbit hunting with his
beagles and his close friends. Most special to David was his daughter,
Annette Hart, in his eyes always his little girl and an excellent softball
player, and her husband, Fred, the ""No. 1” son he never had and loved so
dearly; and the love of his life, his granddaughter, Whitney, whom he
affectionately referred to as ""Whitty.” Besides his wife and daughter and
family, he is survived by a sister, Marilyn Curtis and her husband, William;
seven brothers and their spouses, Paul and Mary, Harold Jr., Dale and Sadie,
Wayne and Patricia, Donald and his friend, Avis, Roger and Deborah, and
Brent and Judy; his sister-in-law, Bev Willey; his good friend, Bill Patch;
and his beloved beagle, Heidi-Sue, who was always by his side. David was
predeceased by two brothers, Bruce and Larry. A memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the Puffer United Methodist Church, Main

Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Cambridge on Dec. 17, 1915, the
daughter of the late Arthur and Clara ""Carrie” Belle (Burnor) Shangraw.
She was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1936, and was a member
of the Alumni Association. She resided for many years in Patchogue, Long
Island, N.Y., with her husband, William Kearney, who predeceased her in
1965. She returned to her home state of Vermont in 1968. She was a former
member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Pat- chogue, the Catholic Daughters
of America and The Crescendo Club in Jeffersonville. Marie retired from IBM
in 1986. The family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff at
Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester for the extra special personal
attention and excellent care provided to Marie over the last six years in a
loving environment she comfortablycalled ""Home.” She will be greatly
missed by all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by a son and
daughter-in-law, Michael and Joy Kearney of Cresco, Pa.; a daughter and
son-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Thompson of Jeffersonville; two grandsons,
Bryan and Sean Kearney of Florida; a sister-in-law, Yole Shangraw of Barre;
and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, James, in
1940; an infant daughter, Grace, in 1943; five brothers, William Shangraw,

sisters, Clara Larrow, Matilda Hibbard, Rose Fredericks, Louise Grenon, and

SWANTON — Eva Olive Savage Nokes

2001. She resided much of her life in the beautiful village of Swanton on
Lake Champlain. Born Oct. 7, 1899, the daughter of John and Ida Mae
Vincelette Savage, she also appreciated and honored her loving stepfather,
George Jemery. During World War I, Eva was about 17 when she survived an
explosion in a small, local munitions factory where her sister Dora was
killed and her sister Minnie received burns. Women were allowed to vote the
year Eva turned 21; she voted then and in every presidential election,
including the notorious November 2000 Palm Beach County election. Eva was an
active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for about 65 years, member of
the choir and president of the Women’s Auxiliary for many years. She moved
to Palm Beach Gardens and became a member of St. Mark Episcopal Church in
1986. She was an active lifetime member and Past Matron of the Order of the
Eastern Star, an active member of the Swanton chapter of King’s
Daughters–sponsors of the Swanton Library–and member of the Swanton
Historical Society. She was an avid ""past master” bridge player,
especially enjoyed operas, and painted many Vermont scenes. She liked to
travel, read, study the Bible, prepare excellent meals, exercise and was
quite independent to her last day. Eva passed very peacefully while resting
in her armchair. Eva was married for 54 years to Arthur J. Nokes Sr. until
his death in 1975. Eva loved her children and grandchildren and all their
spouses: CWO Arthur J. Nokes Jr., U.S.A. Retired, and his wife, Gladys
Mitchell and children Arthur III (Brenda) and Linda (Carl Casperson), and
predeceased grandsons Steven and Robert; Leigh E. Nokes, World War II
veteran, and his wife, Delia Roberts and children Gary (Kim), Carol (David
Doyle), Alan, and Wayne (Tracy); Norma N. Bentley and her husband, Chaplain
Philip Bentley, U.S.N., Retired, and her children, Laura (John Simon), Sally
(Gary Carney), Jay Britch and Sue (Jody Foster). Eva loved her
great-grandchildren, Jason Nokes, Jennifer Nokes, Christopher Casperson,
Erin Casperson, Zachary Britch, Ashley Britch, Jason Foster, Leann Foster,
Andrea Simon, Beth Simon, Heather Nokes, Melissa Nokes, Rachel Nokes,
Rebecca Nokes, Colin Nokes, Cecilia Nokes, Ricky Nokes, and Alex Doyle. Eva
loved her extended family, Linda Collie, Edward Bentley, Jan Bentley, Carol
Gardner, and Florence Descalis-Sabran. She had fond memories of many nieces
and nephews and friends. We celebrate Eva’s earthly life of 101 years, that
spanned three centuries–her eternal life continues as a Divine Heavenly
adventure! We love you, God bless you, and hold you close, Mom, Grandma and
Great- Grandma — Shalom, Grace and Peace. A memorial service was held
Sunday, May 6, at 4 p.m. in St. Mark Episcopal Church, 3395 Burns Road, Palm
Beach Gardens. A funeral service will be held in Holy Trinity Episcopal
Church in Swanton on Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in
Riverside Cemetery. The family requests that contributions be made to the

30, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health Care from injuries sustained in an
automobile accident on April 23. He was born in Burlington, December 29,
1954, the son of the late Donald G. and Dorothy (Rigs) Smith. On July 23,
1983, he married Robin Poulin in Burlington. He was a 1972 graduate of
Burlington High School and had been employed for the last five years by
Barry Callebaut U.S.A., Inc. David was a member of the U.S. Parachute
Association. In addition to his wife, Robin of Georgia, he is survived by
his son, Justin Michael Smith, also of Georgia; two sisters and their
husbands, Deborah and Michael Henry of Underhill Center, and Betty and Allen
Price of Centennial Colo.; a brother, Brian J. Smith of St. Albans and
several nieces and nephews. David was a loving husband and father and cared
deeply for his fends and co-workers. He also loved the outdoors and was an
avid hunter and fisherman. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3, at
11 a.m. in the Georgia Plain Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials

WATERBURY — Leonard A. Vecchione

in the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Monday, April 30, 2001.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 18, 1930, he was the son of the late Elia and
Elena (Annunziata) Vecchione. On May 25, 1952, he married the former Mary
Cluess in Manhattan, N.Y. Leonard was a 1948 graduate of New Uhtrect High
School in Brooklyn. He began his military service with the 102nd Airborne
Division in the U.S. Army and later served with the U.S. Marines during the
Korean Conflict. He continued his education following discharge from the
service at Brooklyn College, graduating from NYU with a degree in Accounting
and receiving the Founders Day award. After working briefly for an insurance
company and NBC, he began a long and distinguished career with the federal
government, starting with the General Accounting Office. He later worked for
the Secret Service where he served on the President’s detail, worked for
President Kennedy’s Task Force on Organized Crime, and later worked
undercover on counterfeiting and with the DEA Drug Enforcement Task Force.
While living in Chicago, he served as deputy director in charge of
operations for the DEA and later worked as agent in charge for the Illinois
Bureau of investigation. Transferring to Concord, N.H., he became special
agent in charge of the DEA, retiring from frederal service in 1983. Moving
to Sunrise, Fla., he became employed by the Racal Milgo Co. where he was in
charge of security as well as earned his MBA from Nova University in
Plantation, Fla. Retiring in 1991, he and his wife came to Vermont in 1995
and made their home in Waterbury where he was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. In his leisure, he enjoyed investments and finance, was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan, but most of all, he enjoyed his family. Leonard is survived by his wife of Waterbury; a daughter, Laura Ware of Foxboro, Mass.; a son, Elia Vecchione of Duxbury; five grandchildren; a sister, Mary Prano of Brooklyn; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was prededeased by a daughter, Helen ""Twinky"" Sheldon, and a brother, Hugo Vecchione. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Andrews Catholic Church in Waterbury on Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Duxbury.
