72, of Williams St., Lancaster, N.H., died at her home Tuesday morning, July 31, 2001, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Emery was born in Lancaster, April 3, 1929, the daughter of Albert J. and Mildred (Knight) Kenney. In 1947 she graduated from Lancaster Academy, and for many years was a child-care provider. She was a communicant of All Saints Church, a charter member of the Lancaster Fire Department, Ladies Auxilliary, and member of the St. Andrews Society of New Hampshire and the Clan Campbell Society of North America. Family members include her husband of 50 years, Herman L. Emery Jr. of Lancaster; four daughters, Miss Eleanor Emery of Lancaster, Mrs. Richard (Sarah) Greenwood of Woodsville, N.H., Mrs. Edwin (Nancy) Benoit of Lunenburg, Vt., and Mrs. Reginald (Elizabeth) Benoit of Lunenburg; a son, Paul Emery and his wife Patty of Lancaster; five grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor D. Kenney of Lancaster, and Mrs. William (Mary) Christy of Manchester; a brother, Dean P. Kenney of Voorheesville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Thursday afternoon and evening, Aug. 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. , of 155 Pleasant St., St. Johnsbury, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Johnsbury, March 21, 1919, the son of Arthur and Pauline (Plante) Emmons. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and was longtime quartermaster of VFW Post 793. Francis had a boundless and infectious energy. He served as St. Johnsbury selectman from 1981 to 1989. He was passionate about his involvement in the National Right to Life movement. A 1938 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, he was very supportive of alumni affairs. He had the distinction of being a charter member of the St. Johnsbury Jaycees. Francis was employed for 34 years with Ralston Purina Co. After retiring, he fulfilled his lifelong love of trains, becoming a consultant for the St. J and LC Railroad, and later conducting fall foliage tours, has a hobby, with Ted Chase and Archie Prevost. Francis was a Eucharistic minister at St. John the Evangelist Church and was a fourth degree knight at Sheridan Chapter 721, Knights of Columbus. He very much enjoyed his past nine winters in Puntagorda, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeannette (Cote) Emmons of St. Johnsbury; and nine children, Peter Emmons and friend Bonnie Boardman of St. Johnsbury, Paul Emmons of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Theresa Jackman and husband Ralph of Port Charlotte, Fla., James Emmons and friend Joanne Martel of Danville, Cecile Montgomery and husband Doug of Lyndonville, Mark Emmons and partner Hal Parker of Newport, Bernadette Jordans of St. Johnsbury, Mary Welsh and husband Corey of Lyndonville, and Barbara Pease of Littleton, N.H. He was predeceased by an infant son, Francis Jr. Survivors also include 13 grandchildren; three great-grand-children; an aunt, Rita Roy of Newport; two sisters, Jeanette Albanese of Wilder, and Barbara Prevost of Austell, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Kaye Emmons of Simsbury, Conn.; a brother-in-law, Cuddy Dupuis of Puntagorda, Fla.; and cousins, nieces, nephews, and the Cote family. , 66, of 106 Bunker Hill St., Lancaster, N.H., passed away suddenly at her home, Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001. Mrs. Hawes was born Jan. 26, 1935, the daughter of Edgar and Ruby (Pierce) Stewart of Lancaster, and grew up and attended Lancaster schools. She resided in several locations in the United States as required by her husband's occupation, and upon retirement in 1990, moved to their Bunker Hill Home. She dearly loved her family and many local friends, old and new, and was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Hawes is survived by her husband of 48 years, Warren G. Hawes of Lancaster; two daughters and their husbands, Jodi and Pete Gray of Lancaster, and Connie and Michael Smith of Portsmouth; one sister, Barbara Platt of Groveton; two grandchildren, Travis and Melissa Gray; one very great granddaughter, Skylar; and nieces, nephews and cousins. , 37, of St. Johnsbury, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 2, 2001, in St. Johnsbury, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Jan. 4, 1964. Jeff had worked for Malcolm Waters for many years, installing siding in the St. Johnsbury area. Since April 26, 1999, he had worked at EHV-Weidmann in the strip mill. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing. Survivors include his beloved daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Fleurie of Brownington; his mother, Elizabeth Faulkner of St. Johnsbury; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Greenwood of St. Johnsbury, with whom he lived; two sisters and their husbands, Sabrina and Steven "Steve" Fortin of Kirby, and Leighann and Roland Souliere of Barton; two brothers and their wives, Michael "Mike" and Lori Fleurie of St. Johnsbury, and Timothy and Lori Fleurie of West Danville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. , 7, of North Stratford, N.H., died due to injuries received from an accident while attempting to get a tool from a toolbox. Born in Lancaster, July 15, 1994, the son of David and Noella (Benoit) Begin, he was a lifelong resident of North Stratford. Jeremy would have started the second grade this fall at the Stratford Public School. Jeremy loved to play T-ball, basketball, fishing, and just about any other activity as long as he was with someone else. He loved racing and was a big Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart fan. He loved to work with tools and had built his own bicycle from scratch. He enjoyed doing for others, and had a smile that lit up the room when he entered. He liked new clothes and combing his hair to look like a drowned rat. He enjoyed babies and liked to make them laugh or to just sit quietly and hold them. Jeremy is survived by his parents of North Stratford; one brother, Justin Begin, and one sister, Jessica Begin, both of North Stratford; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Simone Benoit of Groveton; paternal grandmother Laverne Kay of Lancaster; paternal great-grandmother Christine Allen of Lancaster; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was born in Asbury Park, N.J., Jan. 7, 1914, the daughter of Howard and Agnes (Bayley) Hebblethwaite. She attended public schools in Grove City, Pa., and Nutley, N.J., and graduated from Southern Seminary in Virginia. Miss Hebblethwaite worked for many years as a medical secretary for Dr. W.D. Lindsay, a family physician in Montpelier. Her memberships included Montpelier's Bethany United Church of Christ, Central Vermont Hospital Auxiliary's Bene-fit Shop, and the RSVP service. She was a loyal and enthusiastic volunteer staffer of the Bene-fit Shop before and after her retirement. Survivors include a brother, Luther G. Hebblethwaite of Billings, Mont.; a nephew, John H. Goller of Greensboro; and two nieces, Susan Hogan of Billings, Mont., and Mary Ellen Pugh of Cambridge, Idaho; and five grand-nephews and two grand-nieces. , 67, of Cumberland Street, Groveton, N.H., died suddenly at his camp on Pike Pond in Stark, N.H., Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. Born Dec. 5, 1933, in Groveton, the son of John and Lila M. (Hope) Gaudette, he had been a lifelong resident of Groveton. He was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church. Before retiring in December 1988 he was a supervisor in the pulp mill for James River Corp. of Groveton. He was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion, Post 17, Groveton; a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 1621, Groveton, and of the Groveton Fish & Game Club. Arthur loved his camp on Pike Pond, where he and Ruth spent their summers the past few years, fishing, hunting and watching his hummingbirds. Mr. Gaudette is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth E. (Ingerson) Gaudette of Groveton; three sons, Sam Gaudette and Tom "Yogi" Gaudette, both of Groveton, and Bruce Gaudette of Pinehurst, N.C.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose "Rosa" Roberge of Groveton; and nieces, nephews and cousins. , 94, of 103 Whittemore Lane, Lower Waterford, died the morning of Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. She lived a rich, rewarding and self-sacrificing life. She was the only survivor of triplets, born to John Elias and Mina (Mcfadden) Bronson. Of the three, her brother John lived three days and her sister Phyllis lived approximately 3 months. They were born in their parents' home, at Sanderson Avenue in Dedham, Mass., May 13, 1907. They were so small, her parents kept them in shoeboxes near the stove. She also had a sister, Clara Mina (Bronson) Perkins, who is deceased; and a stepbrother, Maurice Ethan, and stepsister, Lena, who have also passed away. Her father, John Elias Bronson, was one of the oldest survivors of the Civil War, prior to his death in 1943. At the age of 15 he enlisted from Bath, N.H., in the First New Hampshire Field Artillery Battery, along with two of his brothers. His company was among those that chased General Lee and his men from Petersburg to Appomattox, and up to the time of his death he recalled vividly how he stood only 20 feet from the house where the staffs of General Grant and General Lee were to make Lee's surrender conclusive. He also lived to be 94. Frances graduated from Dedham High School and then attended a Boston cooking school. She married John Alexander Magee of Readville, Mass., Jan. 1, 1939. They had five children, John Alexander Magee Jr. of Lower Waterford, David Bronson Magee of Medfield, Mass., Jacqueline Frances Floyd of Omaha, Neb., Carol Ann Mallette of Bremerton, Wash., and Robert Douglas Magee of Roan Mountain, Tenn., who all survive her. They were raised in Islington (Westwood), Mass. In 1966 she was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and ordained as a minister. Her husband died on Jan. 7, 1981. For five years her son Robert and family lived with and cared for her, in her home in Islington, Mass. She moved to Lower Waterford in 1986, to live with her son, John, daughter-in-law Toni Jeanne and granddaughter Jennifer. Over the 15 years that she lived in their home, Toni Jeanne lovingly spent many hours caring for her. While living in Lower Waterford, she enjoyed writing letters to people in nursing and retirement homes. In her letters she offered scriptural hope for a better future. One scripture she enjoyed sharing was "With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: 'Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." -Revelation 21:3-4, New World Translation. She often got a reply by phone or letter expressing their appreciation. Survivors include her five children, John, David, Jacqueline Floyd, Carolle Mallette and Robert; her 13 grandchildren, Linda Jean (Magee) Arell, John A. Magee III, David Magee Jr., Stepheney Magee, Gregory Magee, Joyce (Giondomenico) Dillahunt, Richard Giondomenico, Cheryl (Mallette) Silves, James Mallette, Laura (Mallette) Wood, Christine (Magee) Hubbard, Carrie (Magee) Ruganis and Jennifer Magee; and her 15 great-grandchildren, Timothy Arell, Mathew Arell, Zachary Magee, Kayleigh Magee, Alissa Dillahunt, Katorah Dillahunt, Jason Giondomenico, Kaela Giondomenico, Jacob Ruganis, Brandon Hubbard, Megan Hubbard, Nathan Silves, Breanna Silves, Carley Mallette and Kayla Mallette. , 68, of 1208 N. Kansas, Hastings, Neb., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001. The Rev. Dana was born May 30, 1933, in St. Johnsbury, to Clarence H. and Priscilla G. (Scott) Dana. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1952 and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in 1956. In 1961 he received his bachelor of divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological Seminary, Boston, Mass. On Aug. 22, 1964, he married A. Sheffield Wilson in Charleston, S.C. He was a minister in the United Church of Christ at various locations. He was predeceased by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Sheffield Dana of Hastings, Neb.; two daughters and their husbands, Ann and Mark Gillen of Kearney, Neb., and Elizabeth and Terry Piening of Holdrege, Neb.; four grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Clarence H. , 79, of Lunenburg, passed away Monday afternoon, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville. He was born in Lyndon, Nov. 30, 1921, the son of the late Fred and Sylvia (King) Hubbard. He was also predeceased by his wife Margaret (Stone) Hubbard in May 2001; by his brother, Calvin Hubbard, and by a sister, Emily (Hubbard) Thresher. Charles was a member of the Grange in Lunenburg. He enjoyed entertaining everyone at the Caledonia County Fair with his oxen, Tim and Tom. He enjoyed his animals very much. He farmed most of his life on a farm in Lyndon. After farming he worked construction and then worked as road commissioner for the town of Lunenburg, retiring in 1985. He also enjoyed the spring of the year when sugaring started. Charles sugared with buckets for years until a few years ago, when he decided to go more modern with pipelines. One of his most talked-about memories was dancing at the old Grange hall in Lyndon on Saturday nights. He is survived by two sons, Robert D. Hubbard and his wife Lorene of East St. Johnsbury, and Ronald Hubbard of Margate, Fla.; his brother, Frank Hubbard of St. Johnsbury; his sister, Emma Hubbard of St. Johnsbury; a sister-in-law, Velida Hubbard of Titusville, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jeanine Thorne, David Hubbard, Todd Hubbard, Tina Rodriquez and Robert Hubbard Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Travis Cole, Robert White, Rebecca Hubbard, Edward White Jr., Robert Hubbard III, Tesla Hubbard, Jessica Rodriquez and Todd Hubbard Jr.; and by several nieces and nephews. 70, of Columbia, N.H., passed away at the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center in Concord, N.H., early Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001. Born in Colebrook, N.H., Jan. 9, 1931, he was the son of Albert and Evelyn (Grapes) Rainville. He attended Colebrook public schools. In 1949 he started driving trucks for his father and later for himself. Mr. Rainville served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. After his discharge, he returned home and went back to trucking. He was married to Roberta Spitzner in May 1957 and the couple resided in Columbia ever since. Mr. Rainville was a well-known North Country trucker and jobber all his life. He was a partner in both the Northern Chipping Company and the Rainville Brothers Tree Farm. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Rainville enjoyed taking rides with Brandy, the yellow lab, and will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Roberta; two sons, Randy Rainville and Ronny Rainville, both of Columbia, N.H.; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Debra) Mardin of Groveton, N.H., and Mrs. Ed (Leta) Jelley of Littleton, N.H.; two brothers, Stewart Rainville of Colebrook, N.H., and George Rainville of Reading, Mass.; a sister, Elaine White of Columbia, N.H.; five grandchildren, Jacob and Caleb Marin, and Andrew, Cody and Cheyenne Rainville. Mr. Rainville was predeceased by a daughter, Robin; and by two brothers, Edmund Rainville and Robert Rainville. , 76, of Commercial Avenue in Gilman, died Thursday morning, Aug. 9, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, White River Junction. Mr. Desrochers was born in Dalton on Oct. 1, 1924, the son of Joseph John and Beatrice Ann (Bennett) Desrochers. Raised in Dalton, he resided there and surrounding communities most of his life. In the 1970s, he made his permanent residence in Gilman. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. For a time, he worked as a heavy equipment operator in the construction business. He was also a master electrician and was employed at one time as the electrician at Gilman Paper Co. In earlier years, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and Alaska He was a member of the Littleton and Lancaster Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as former vice commander in Littleton. He was also a member of the Cooties, the Shriners and was a 32 degree Mason. Family members include two sons, Robert E. Desrochers of Candia, N.H., John "Jay" Desrochers of Dalton; a brother, R. , 81, born in Benson, Vt., a resident of Wells River, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001. Leanore, often known as Lee, attended Castleton State College and soon after served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. She continued her education at the University of Detroit. For many years Leanore worked for the state of Vermont Department of Employment and Training. Leanore was beloved by her late husband, Joe Myrick, and her late son, Michael J. Maloney Jr. She is survived by her her loving daughters, Bunny DeMarinia and Martha Towle, and her grandchildren Mattie and Michael Towle. Leanore will long be remembered for sharing her enthusiasm for Scrabble and challenging crossword puzzles. , 81, of St. Johnsbury, died at his home at 331 Summer St., Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001. He was born in St. Johnsbury Aug. 4, 1920, the son of Fabian and Glenn (Adams) Reed. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving stateside in the pilot training program and air force medical detachment. He married Virginia Erikson Sept. 4, 1948; she predeceased him Nov. 14, 1991. Mr. Reed was longtime vice president and insurance agent at Reed Insurance Agency on Main Street in St. Johnsbury, his father Fabian having been president and his brother Russell, treasurer. Ron's passion in life was his trumpet and his more than 50-year affiliation with the Mt. Sinai Shriner's Band. He had been a member of the St. Johnsbury Town Band since 1937. While attending the University of Alabama, he was proud to have played with their Million Dollar Band. The Reeds spent summers at their Lake Groton camp. Time spent with his family was always most important to Ron. He also enjoyed a good game of bridge or cribbage. Civically he was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, the Elks Club, Walden Club, Passumpsic Lodge 27, and Mt. Sinai Temple 3 Shrine. He also served as chairman of the Caledonia-Southern Essex Red Cross blood program for about 20 years. He was a former trustee of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and former executive committeeman for the Chamber of Commerce. Ron was very active in North Congregational Church, where he served as church clerk and as deacon for three years, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was Sunday School superintendent. He is survived by his second wife, Dot Reed, a longtime friend whom he married Jan. 11, 1997; two daughters, Elaine Magnan and husband John of St. Albans, and Martha Reed of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Scott, Angela and Tyler; his brother, Russell Reed and wife Virginia of St. Johnsbury; nieces and nephews; and Dot's three sons, David, Donald and Alan Trevarthen. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church on Main Street in St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mr. Roy had worked in the area for several restaurants and was employed at the St. Johnsbury Country Club as a cook at the time of his death. , of Whitefield, N.H., died with family at her side Aug. 10, 2001 at the Littleton Regional Hospital, Littleton, N.H. She was born June 9, 1912, in Bolton, Lanceshire, England, granddaughter of Lord and Lady Bourke of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland, and daughter of Michael and Bridget (Bourke) O'Flaherty of Bolton, Lanceshire, England. She emigrated to the United States via New York City in 1930. Upon arrival, she lived with her sister, Margaret (O'Flaherty) Lennox, and her husband, David. Even though it was the beginning of the Depression, she managed to get a job at F.W. Woolworth on 14th Street, and she worked there until her marriage on Aug. 5, 1934, to John Arthur O'Neil of New York City. After a honeymoon in the White Mountains and Niagara Falls, they settled in New York City. It was during her early years of marriage that she began to raise her niece, Gloria Zinco, and then her three children, Maureen, Jackie and Eileen. In 1953, the family moved to their Dalton farm. She was a communicant of Saint Rose of Lima Church in Littleton. In 1965, after the death of their only son, Jackie, they raised his children, Theresa, Dennis, John and Joseph O'Neil. In 1996, John and Anne moved from their farm in Dalton to the Highland House in Whitefield, where she resided until her death. Anne leaves her husband of 67 years, John A. O'Neil of Whitefield; daughters Maureen Godbout of Littleton, and Eileen Ball and her husband Gregory of Franconia; a sister, Margaret Lennox of Flushing, N.Y.; a brother, Jack Flaherty of Warwick, England; nieces Gloria Crawford of Alexandria, Va., Mary Margaret McGeever of Flushing, N.Y., Teresa Goater of Bolton, England, and Mary Vickers of Bolton, England; and a nephew, Teddy Doherty, of Bolton, England. , 71, of Israel River Road, Jefferson, N.H., died suddenly, Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 8, 2001, while working in Milan. Mr. Kenison was born in Berlin, N.H., Sept. 21, 1929, the son of Leland and Eva (Lavoie) Kenison. Residing most of his life in Jefferson, Norman worked in the construction business. For many years he was self-employed, and for approximately five years worked for Audley Construction. At the time of his death he was employed with Kel-Log of Gorham, where he has worked for the past 10 years. He was also the road agent for the town of Jefferson for many years. He was known for his beautifully kept property, which he enjoyed mowing. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Whitefield. Family includes three sons, Norman R. , 88, of Needham, Mass., and formerly of South Ryegate, Vt., an engineer, inventor, gunsmith, string instrument bowmaker and devoted husband, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Tippett Home Hospice, Needham, from complications of heart arrhythmia. He was born in South Ryegate, July 26, 1913, the son of Archibald and Edith (Plummer) Bone. Raised on the family farm, he attended school 10 miles away in Woodsville, N.H., where he met his future wife, Leona Clough. He graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1935 and worked at Irwin Augur Bit Company in Wilmington, Ohio, before returning to Wentworth to teach Navy machinist mates during World War II. He worked at Dennison Manufacturing Company in Framingham, Mass. (now Avery Dennison), from 1944 until 2000, and was still involved in two projects there at the time of his death. He and his wife had lived in Needham since 1943, where they were active in the Needham Congregational Church. Mr. Bone held numerous patents at Dennison, including several for the Swiftacher, the device for attaching tags to clothing with a nylon filament. His ubiquitous fasteners were cited by Smithsonian Magazine as a universal annoyance. Dennison has honored Mr. Bone by dedicating a building in his name. In addition to inventing at his job, Mr. Bone always seemed to find ways to improve tools and devices around him, including myriad everyday conveniences around the home. Mr. Bone applied his engineering and master craftsman skills to making string instrument bows, and also became one of the world's most respected experts on repair and restoration of fine bows. He was a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. His customers ranged from young students to members of professional ensembles such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and bows have been shipped to him from all over the world. He has received many letters from grateful students to whom he extended unlimited credit so they could learn their profession with good bows. Mr. Bone and his craft have been featured in Boston Globe articles. Mr. Bone and his wife of 62 years, Leona (Clough) Bone, known as Kitty, enjoyed weekends at their cabin in Vermont, maintaining close contact with family and friends in the area. Mr. Bone played violin and viola, and Mrs. Bone played violin. They both played in community orchestras in the Boston area for many years, but took special pleasure in playing chamber music at home and in Vermont with a wide variety of friends and colleagues, including professional musicians. Mr. Bone is survived by his wife of Needham; their son Russell P. of Billerica, Mass.; daughters Marilyn Bone Kloss of Concord, Mass., and Janet E. Bone of Morris Plains, N.J.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be in the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church, Monday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Catherine Cook, pastor, officiating. , 55, a long-time East Burke resident, died suddenly Saturday, Aug. 11, at her home. The daughter of John and Elaine Adele Jorgenson Steenland, she was born Nov. 15, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Carol moved with her family to Lyndonville in 1961. She married David E. Sanderson, June 13, 1964, in the Lyndonville Congregational Church. She was an active member of the East Burke Congregational Church and served as a Sunday school superintendent and sang in the choir. She had worked at J.C. Penney Co. and as an Avon distributor for several years. Carol loved children, especially her grandchildren, and also gardening, painting and singing. Carol is survived by her husband David E. of East Burke; three sons, John David and wife Christine of Lyndon Center, Michael David of East Burke, and Daniel Patrick of Lyndonville; a daughter, Bonnie Sue and husband Robert Kenyon of Enfield, N.H.; six grandchildren, Gabe Kelly, Mollie Kelly, Hillary Kelly, Lane Sanderson, Nathaniel David Sanderson, Audrey Kassandra Kenyon; her parents, John and Elaine Steenland of Lyndonville; a brother, Thomas John Steenland of Colchester; a sister, Jane Adele Goulding of Lyndonville. , 89, formerly of 46 Jackson St., Concord, N.H., who has been living with his daughter for the past year at 17 Dover St., died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Hospice House, Concord, N.H., following an extended illness. He was born in Newbury, Vt., Jan. 13, 1912, a son of Bertie Samuel and Arvilla Mae (Aldrich) Boyce. Mr. Boyce was raised in Newbury, where he had been a dairy farmer and had worked for the town of Ryegate, Vt., on the Highway Department. From 1941 until 1975 he worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad as a locomotive engineer in the White Mountain Division (Woodsville, N.H., White River Junction and Newport, Vt.), and later in Concord. He was a member of the Locomotive Firemen and Engineers Union and a former member of the Odd Fellows in Woodsville. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie L. (Bennett) Boyce, May 22, 1991. Survivors include three daughters, Caroline "Trilly" Lewis of Concord, N.H., Marilyn "Sam" Boyce of Hudson, N.H., and Barbara Schlenker of Penacook, N.H.; two sons, Carleton Boyce Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Russell Boyce of Concord, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur Boyce of Center Haverhill, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 50, of Concord Drive, Webster, N.H., died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the New Hampshire Veteran's Hospital in Manchester, N.H. Born Oct. 24, 1950, in Morrisville, Vt., he was the son of Lawrence A. and Margaret V. (DeGreenia) Smith. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his bravery. He married Margaret E. (Lewis) in Penacook, N.H., March 20, 1982. He worked for 17 years at Swenson Granite in Concord, N.H., as a cutter and burner. He also worked for many years as a chimney sweep with Canterbury Chimney Sweeps, along with the owner and his very dear friend, Albert Aldo. He really enjoyed his job as a chimney sweep because he was a lover of people, and met many interesting and different people with this job. He was a gentle giant and a very kind-hearted and loving man. His family members include his wife, Margaret E. Smith of Webster; his mother, Margaret V. Smith of Penacook; three brothers, Vernon and Jeffrey Smith, both of Boscawen, and Thomas Smith of Penacook; five sisters, Virginia Smith of Franklin, Susan Nasis of Meredith, Elizabeth Smith and Evelyn Baron of Boscawen, and Margaret Labrecque of Northfield; one half-sister, Jane Smith of Hardwick, Vt.; a very devoted best friend, Albert Aldo of Laconia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. During World War II he served his country in the U. S. Navy. Ed worked for New England Power Co. as plant operator for 41 years, retiring in 1989. On Dec. 9, 1948, he married Ruby (Cheney), who survives him in Waterford. Other survivors include two daughters, Marie and husband Dan Lutterman, and Judy Humphrey and husband Marc Whitten, both of Reno, Nev. He was predeceased by a son, Harvey E. Humphrey, in 1971; two brothers, Ray Humphrey, in 1967, and Randall (6 years old) in 1921. , 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at the Perron Farm on Perron Hill in Glover. He was born March 2, 1927, in Glover, the son of Alfred and Noellia (Morency) Perron. Norman married Dorothy Clary of Greensboro, Aug. 12, 1950. He was a member of the Glover Community Church and he held several offices over the years, including trustee and finance committee. He was selectman for the town of Glover for nine years. Norman was a member of the St. Johnsbury Elks Lodge 1343, and several farm organizations, such as United Farmers, Farm Bureau and Agri-Mark. Norman farmed in Glover all his life. He carried on his father's varied business interests. These included gathering milk, logging, working in the pulp industry, and producing and selling syrup. Norman's passions included having his family close, his old John Deere tractors, antique cars, repairing and refinishing furniture, collecting antiques, deer hunting, and hosting his famous cellar parties. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Perron of Glover; five children, Audrey and John Cota of Jeffersonville, Vt., Brian and Julie Perron of Glover, Claire and Denis Michaud of East Hardwick, David and Martha Perron of Glover, and Elaine and Andrew Gallup of Westmore; 11 grandchildren, Shelly and Ryan Cota, Jeremy, Travis and wife Crystal, and Daniel Michaud, Phillip and Elizabeth Perron, Gillian and Hillary Perron, Danika and Drew Gallup; one great-grandchild, Ryley Mae Cota; three sisters, Mamie Pudvah of Glover, Adrienne Kells of Branford, Conn., and Blanche Benway of Glover. Born Oct. 24, 1950, in Morrisville, Vt., he was the son of Lawrence A. and Margaret V. (DeGreenia) Smith. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his bravery. He married Margaret E. (Lewis) in Penacook, N.H., March 20, 1982. He worked for 17 years at Swenson Granite in Concord, N.H., as a cutter and burner. He also worked for many years as a chimney sweep with Canterbury Chimney Sweeps, along with the owner and his very dear friend, Albert Aldo. He really enjoyed his job as a chimney sweep because he was a lover of people, and met many interesting and different people with this job. He was a gentle giant and a very kind-hearted and loving man. His family members include his wife, Margaret E. Smith of Webster; his mother, Margaret V. Smith of Penacook; three brothers, Vernon and Jeffrey Smith, both of Boscawen, and Thomas Smith of Penacook; five sisters, Virginia Smith of Franklin, Susan Nasis of Meredith, Elizabeth Smith and Evelyn Baron of Boscawen, and Margaret Labrecque of Northfield; one half-sister, Jane Smith of Hardwick, Vt.; a very devoted best friend, Albert Aldo of Laconia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Raymond E. Smith, who died in 1999; and his father, Lawrence A. Smith, who died in 1989. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of Jerry's life will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m., at the home of Thomas and Darlene Smith, 344 Elm St., Penacook, N.H. , 84, of South Wheelock, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. He was born in Newark, N.J., Dec. 9, 1916, the son of Henry and Grace (Mott) Stephan. In 1939 he married Lisa Miller. They lived in New Jersey where Vincent operated Stephan's Auto. Mr. and Mrs. Stephan were ballroom dance instructors and enjoyed dancing as often as they could. In the 1960s they moved to South Wheelock, where Vincent helped his son Thomas operate his auto body shop. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lisa Stephan of South Wheelock; three sons, Vincent B. Stephan of New Jersey, Henry R. Stephan and his wife Barbara of Pennsylvania, and Thomas J. Stephan and his wife Linda of South Wheelock; a daughter, June L. Cole and her husband Gilbert of South Wheelock; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Stephan of Florida; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Stephan of New Jersey; a brother-in-law, Palmer Miller and his wife Jeanette of Arizona; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Henry Stephan. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church in Lyndonville with the pastor, the Rev. Stephen Nichols, celebrant. , of 95 Railroad St. in St. Johnsbury, passed away at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, early Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2001. She was born in Groton, April 13, 1922. She was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Linnie (Welch) Legare. She was also predeceased by a brother, Wendell, and a sister, Cordelia. Merlene taught in Florida and New York before returning to Vermont. She taught business education in public schools in Peacham, Newbury and Cabot, and retired in 1986. Her church, the St. Johnsbury Seventh-day Adventist Church, was the focus of her life. A charter member of the church, Marlene was head elder and church clerk for many years, taught the adult Sabbath School for some 30 years, and had served as school board chairperson of the Seventh-day Adventist elementary school. She is survived by a niece, Linda Charbonneau and her family of Florida; and a few cousins and their families. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the St. Johnsbury Seventh-day Adventist Church on Southard St., with pastors Darrell Meuhlhauser and Richard Wright officiating. , 73, of North Concord, Vt., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Johnsbury. He was born in Newark, Vt., the son of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Walters) McFarland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His wife, Carolyn (Deth) McFarland, predeceased him. Before retiring, he was a truck driver and worked for Wayne Comeau and Ray O. Parker, and also worked construction. He enjoyed pony pulling at area fairs and field days. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by three children, Pam Bedor and her companion Dean Eastman of Sutton, Carol Before and her husband Edmond of West Burke, and Richard W. "Rick" McFarland of Newark, Vt.; three grandchildren, Melissa Bedor and her companion, Jonathan Rutledge, Barbara Bedor, and Michael Bedor; a great-grandson, Kobe Rutledge; and two brothers, Wendall "Mac" McFarland of Newark, Vt., and Hugh McFarland of Kirby. She was born March 23, 1921 in Danville, the daughter of John and Lillian (Sanborn) Gadapee. She worked for Scott Cleaners, W.T. Grant, and St. Johnsbury Trucking in St. Johnsbury. She also drove truck and farmed with her husband Frank Stone at their beef and produce farm in Barnet, and together they looked after the Pleasant View Cemetery in Barnet. She was predeceased by a brother and sister. Surviving relatives include her husband of 26 years, Frank B. Stone of Barnet; two sons, Richard Bryer of Lunenburg, and Everett Bryer of Tonawanda, N.Y.; one daughter, Margaret Comstock of Urbana, Mo.; a special step-son, Linwood Stone of Barnet, and a special step-daughter, Sue Robinson of Barnet; a special step-granddaughter, Sandra Heath; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , of 108 Bagley Street in St. Johnsbury, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided since early January. She was born May 8, 1908, in St. Morel, Quebec, one of 17 children born to Hermidas and Agnes Marcotte. She was the last surviving child of that family. Her family grew up in Coventry. Julia moved to St. Johnsbury in 1931, marrying Raymond J. Desrochers June 29, 1936; Raymond died Feb. 9, 1983. She worked 33 years at the old St. Johnsbury Hospital and was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She is survived by three sisters-in-law: Dorothy Desrochers and Lorette Desrochers, both of St. Johnsbury, and Helen Desrochers of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; her nieces and nephews, and their families. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 94, of Daniels Road, Pike, N.H., died Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, 2001, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Waterford, Vt., June 24, 1907, a son of Harry W. and Sadie (Stevens) Fuller. He later moved to Concord, Vt., where he worked with his father on log drives down the river. In 1920 he moved to Lyndon and attended Lyndon Institute. Mr. Fuller was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. In the 1950s, along with his first wife Peggy, he bought a farm in Pike, where he continued to work the farm with his second wife, Barbara, until retiring 12 years ago. He had also worked for the soil conservation agency for 18 years. Mr. Fuller had received his 60-year membership pin from the Masonic Lodge F & AM of Concord, Vt., and was also a member of Grafton Kane Lodge F & AM 46 of North Haverhill. He attended the Bethany Congregational Church in Pike and was a committee member of the FHA for 18 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Cornelia "Peggy" (Morrison) Fuller in 1956, his second wife, Barbara (Wheeler) Fuller, Oct. 31, 2000, and a daughter, Dorothy (Graham) Pignato. Surviving relatives include one sister, Dallas Fuller of Lyndonville; one brother, Wayne Fuller of Hanson, Ky.; one grandchild; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and one nephew of Hanson, Ky. , 77, a retired public relations director, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., after a brief illness. Mr. MacDonald lived in Melrose, Mass., for the past 41 years and previously lived in Malden, Mass. Rod was born in South Boston and educated in Malden, Mass., schools. In 1942, when World War II broke out, he left school and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Asian Pacific Theatre and landing in Guam. When he was discharged in 1946 he had attained the rank of Corporal. He returned to Malden after his discharge and entered Cheshire Academy in Connecticut, where he received his high school diploma. He then entered Boston University, where he received his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1951. He became a reporter for the Boston Post, where he was employed for 10 years before becoming a political columnist for the Boston Traveler, where he wrote a column under the name of Lafayette Mullagan for over 10 years. It was during this period that he was recruited by the Prudential Insurance Company of Boston and became their manager of public relations. He was employed there for over 20 years and at his retirement in 1985 was their director of public relations. When he retired he continued to work as a consultant for Clark & Co., a public relations firm on Boylston Street in Boston. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi of Boston, and served on the boards of directors of Catholic Charities of Boston, The Boston Marathon, the Back Bay Association, Boston Chamber of Commerce, and the Massachusetts Taxpayers Association, and he served as governor of the Boston Athletic Association. He is survived by his daughter, the Rev. Jean A. MacDonald and her life partner Meg Powden of Lyndonville, Vt.; his brother, Andrew D. MacDonald of Chicago, Ill.; his sister, Jean A. MacDonald of Malden; and his grandchildren, Cory and Burke MacDonald-Powden of Vermont; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia A. (Berg) MacDonald, and by his brother, John D. MacDonald. He was born Sept. 10, 1923, in South Boston, Mass., the son of the late Roderick and Jennie (Palmer) MacDonald. Tony enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served during World War II. He then worked for the city of New York and moved to Vermont in 1973, where he worked at Champlain College. He had a love for the ocean and fishing, enjoyed Vermont's natural beauty, and loved to garden, cross-country ski and take long country walks. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie; his sons, Michael, Robert and Paul; his 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sisters and brothers, Carmela, David, Marie and John. , 84, of 569 Pleasant Street in St. Johnsbury, died Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. He had been there for five days after a relatively brief illness. He was born in St. Johnsbury Aug. 5, 1917, one of 12 children born to George and Katherine (Groslouis) Marcotte. His first wife, Virginia (Dubuque) Marcotte, predeceased him in 1990. He and his second wife, Floy, spent the past 10 years very happily together. Alfred was a longtime employee at Rodd Roofing and operated his tropical fish business "Fish World" out of his home. He was a former member of VFW Post 793 and was a past service officer there. He loved to tend his gardens and spend time outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Floy; three children, Shari-Jean Aussiker and husband Ralph of St. Johnsbury, Jan Dussault and husband Paul of St. Johnsbury, and Deborah Hodge of Castleton, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters, Connie Van Zandt of Florida, Pauline Mango of Pennsylvania, May Ogden of New York state, and Rollie Marcotte of Milford, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Irene, Anita, Betty and Georgette; and two brothers, Frank and Bernard. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. She was a member of the United Church of Newport and a Sunday School teacher for seven years; a past commander of the D.A.V. Auxiliary in St. Johnsbury; legislative chairman, state of Vermont D.A.V. Chapter 9 Auxiliary; and former American Legion Post 21 Auxiliary chaplain. Edith was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She worked as a waitress at the old Talk of the Town Restaurant on Portland Street, the old Candlelight Restaurant, the old Willey's Bakery, and the old St. Johnsbury House. She also worked as a sales clerk at Fisherman's and WT Grant Co. on Railroad Street. , of Waterford, died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, Monday, Aug. 27, 2001. He was born in Dennysville, Maine, Oct. 22, 1921, the next to the youngest of nine children born to Norman W. and Nancy J. (Bowman) Clark. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. Walter retired from Fairbanks in 1985 after 40 years of service. He had formerly resided on James Street in St. Johnsbury, and for the past five years made his home with son Norman and family. He is survived by three children, Norma Jean Leach and husband Terry of St. Johnsbury, Carol Ann Biss and husband Kenneth of Ormand Beach, Fla., and Norman L. Clark and wife Sandra of Waterford; six grandsons; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth L. Smith and husband William of Cottonwood, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews, including Jim Clark of East Montpelier. He was predeceased by six brothers and one sister. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home with the Rev. Melvin A. Richardson officiating. There will be no visiting hours. , 74, of 575 Whitefield Road, Dalton, N.H., passed away at her residence on Sunday evening, Aug. 26, 2001, following a long illness. She was born in Stoddard, N.H., daughter of Edward and Ruth (Jennings) Lambert. She had been a resident of the area for many years, and worked as a cook at the Dalton School. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, hunting, fishing, bingo, quilting, traveling and particularly shopping. She is survived by her husband, Bernard DePina of Dalton; two daughters, Doris Sabolevski of Keene, N.H., and Karen Berthiaume of Winchester, N.H.; two sons, Edwin Brown of Portsmouth, N.H., and Terry Brown of Newmarket, N.H.; several brothers and sisters; a stepdaughter, Fawn Hale; a stepson, Bernard Jr.; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. , 93, formerly of 6 Terrace Street, Woodsville, N.H., died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford, after an extended illness. She was born in East Haverhill, N.H., June 7, 1908, the daughter of Cyrille and Mary DeRosia Fortier. Mrs. Wheeler worked at the Woodsville Diner during World War II and was a chambermaid for the Hale Tavern in Wells River. She also worked in the Lisbon and Littleton shoe shops. Eva was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church of Woodsville. She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry, Joseph and William Fortier; and five sisters, Rose Fortier, Annie Fillian, Cora White, Virginia Richardson and Dora Kretchen. Surviving relatives include two sons, Erving I. Wheeler of Woodsville, and Paul R. Wheeler of Indian Orchard, Mass.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Blanche Kelley of New Britain, Conn.; two brothers, Leo Fortier and Fred Fortier, both of North Haverhill, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , of Barre, Vt., passed away at Central Vermont Hospital on Tuesday morning, Aug. 28, 2001. She had been residing at Four Seasons Care Home in Northfield, Vt., since the first of July. She was born March 26, 1917, in Middlesex, Vt., one of six children of Charles F. and Flora (Barnett) Guyette. Pearl married Lucius LeRoy Kidder, May 21, 1936, in Stowe, Vt. He predeceased her in December 1962. Pearl was the mother of 12 children (six boys, six girls). She was predeceased by a son, George A. Kidder, in April 1962. Her surviving children are Charles A. Kidder and wife Pearl of Hyde Park, Vt., Charlotte S. and husband Buck Garsee of Burkeville, Texas, Harvey C. Kidder of Newport, Vt., Harriet A. Cady and husband Raymond of Morrisville, Vt., Perry J. Kidder and fiancee Andrea Carter of Eden Mills, Vt., Doris B. (Morris) Vanderbilt and husband Harold Morris of Orange, Vt., Elizabeth R. Achilles of South Ryegate, Vt., Thomas C. Kidder and wife Joanne of Brookfield, Vt., Francis F. Kidder and wife Rose of Orange, Vt., Louise J. Lane of Barre, Vt., and Caroline S. Bartlett and husband Floyd of Bristol, Vt. The Kidder family was of five generations with 40 grandchildren, over 65 grandchildren and approximately 10 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pearl lived her large family and all of the extensions of it. She had the ability to remember each and every birthday and anniversary, and when called upon to do so she would gladly tell you when they were. She loved her large family birthday parties and the family celebrated her 84th birthday with an open house at her apartment in March. Pearl attended Project Independence in Barre for more than 20 years. At Project Independence, one of her memorable projects was sewing a hot air balloon, which was tethered on the Capitol lawn in Montpelier, and then taking a ride in it. She was also a member at various times of the VFW and American Legion. Life and times were enjoyed to the fullest, and her family was the most important part to her. Crafts of all kinds were enjoyed and she made many dolls, quilts, and an assortment of other things as well. She also enjoyed outdoor sports, of which fishing was her favorite. A funeral service is scheduled for this morning at 11 a.m. at the Stowe Community Church, with the Rev. Jennifer Geary officiating. Interment at Riverbank Cemetery in Stowe is to follow the service.

, 72, of Hackettstown, N.J., died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Mrs. Cortese was born in Palmer, Mass., and grew up in Danville. She was the daughter of Erwin and Beulah Wakefield. Mrs. Cortese lived in Dover, N.J., for 30 years, and in Hackettstown, N.J. for the last year and a half. Zoe-Ann Cortese graduated from the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in Hanover, N.H., and was a registered nurse for over 40 years. She retired from the Morris View Nursing Home in Morris Plains, N.J., in 1994, as a supervisor of nurses. Mrs. Cortese is survived by a sister, Martha Jean Wolf; three daughters, Diane Sebastian, Donna McFarland and Debra Roskowski; and eight grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Danville Green Cemetery. , 52, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. The daughter of Roland and Ruth Gibson Emmons, she was born May 10, 1949 in St. Johnsbury. Nancy attended Barnet schools and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1967. She graduated from nursing school in Lowell, Mass., and worked for many years as a registered nurse at Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport, Pa., prior to her returning to St. Johnsbury two years ago. Nancy enjoyed quilting, therapeutic horseback riding for disabled children and gardening. Her children were most important in her life. Nancy is survived by three children, Eli of St. Johnsbury, Timothy of Kutztown, Pa., and Julia of St. Johnsbury; her mother, Ruth Emmons of Monroe, N.H.; two brothers, Keith of Barnet, and Curtis of Monroe; two sisters, Marjorie Anderson of Monroe, and Judith Hayward of Dayton, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1991. Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at the North Congregational Church, with the Rev. Jay Sprout officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Barnet. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home, located at 525 Summer Street, St. Johnsbury. , 48, passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 29, 2001, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, N.H. Mr. Blanchard was born Feb. 9, 1953, in West Stewartstown, N.H. He was the son of Roy and Bernadine (Hicks) Blanchard. After attending Pittsburg High School, Pittsburg, N.H., Mr. Blanchard worked several years for Ethan Allen Furniture Manufacturing in Beecher Falls, Vt., and later for both Walter Dorman and Winston Dorman. For the past 10 years he had worked for Audley Construction Company as a truck driver. Mr. Blanchard enjoyed fly-fishing and driving. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his mother, Bernadine Blanchard of Hillsboro, N.H.; his fiancee, Linda Way of Lancaster, N.H.; three sons, Michael Blanchard of West Stewartstown, Peter Blanchard of Newport, Vt., and Christopher Blanchard of Center Sandwich, N.H.; a daughter, Elaine Blanchard of Hillsboro, N.H.; two brothers, Greg Blanchard of Concord, N.H., and John Blanchard of Henniker, N.H.; a sister, Mrs. Keith (Cynthia) Christian of Peterboro, N.H., and two grandchildren. Calling hours will be at the Newman Funeral Home, 136 Main Street in Colebrook, N.H., Friday, Aug. 31 from 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Farnham Methodist Church in Pittsburg. , 99, of Morrisville, formerly of Danville, died at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001. She was born April 27, 1902, in Leytonstone, England, to Frederick Thomas and Frances (Snashall) Welch. Her family immigrated to Canada and on to Vermont in 1911. She attended schools in England, Chelsea, Vt., and completed several college courses while living in Massachusetts. While living in Chelsea, she met John Fiske Hough, the love of her life, and they were married June 16, 1921. She had attended the Danville Congregational Church, and was a member of the Ladies' Aid Society. Elsie was a member of the Danville PTA and was a past president of the Danville Women's Club. During her tenure, she initiated the lighting of the Danville Congregational Church steeple, which led to area church lightings. She worked at The Caledonian-Record in St. Johnsbury during the early 1960s as the society editor. Elsie and her husband retired to East Barre in the late 1960s. Later they moved to Arizona, returning to Morrisville in 1979. Mr. Hough died shortly after their return. Elsie made her home in Morrisville and made many good friends, young and old, during her 22 years there. For several years, she continued the responsibility of a working position at the Lamoille County Senior Center, which she concluded at the age of 89. She took joy in being able to knit mittens for family and area children, as well as lap robes. Her many friends were the recipients of her knitted bed slippers. Elsie loved reading and sharing books with friends. After 77 years, she and her daughter had the opportunity to return to her birthplace in England in 1988. She was a beloved mother to her eight children, grandmother to 25, great-grandmother to 43, and great-great-grandmother to 3. She is survived by seven children, John W. of Atlanta, Ga., Constance Houdashell and her husband Walter of Mesa, Ariz., Janet Peduzzi of East Montpelier, Sarah Gilman and a special son-in-law, Kenneth, of Morrisville, Dr. Charlotte Stocek of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Stephen F. and dear daughter-in-law, Anne, of Glen Dale, Ariz., and Mary Neal of Morrisville. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Elsie was predeceased by an infant son, William, in 1933; her daughter, Frances Moore, in January 2001; a daughter-in-law, Natalie (Gerry) Hough in 1981; her brothers, Henry, William, Percy and Charles; and her sisters, Nellie Mahoney and Gladys Noyes. Her loving family will be forever grateful for her constant guidance and presence in their lives. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in the First Congregational Church of Morrisville, with committal services being held later in the afternoon for family in the Village Cemetery in Tunbridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elsie's memory would be appreciated to the Morristown Centennial Library, P.O. Box 727, Morrisville, VT 05661, for the purpose of purchasing children's literature.
