MARILYN (VORCE) LOECHER
....show BURLINGTON — Marilyn V. Loecher, 72, longtime
resident of Burlington, died unexpectedly at her home Saturday, May 26,
2001. Originally from Menands, N.Y., Mrs. Loecher moved to Burlington in
1953 and took an active interest in many volunteer organizations in the
community. She devoted 22 years volunteering for Meals on Wheels senior
assistance organization. She also volunteered at the Medical Center Hospital
and was an active member of St. Paul Episcopal Cathedral. She is survived by
her daughter, Heidi Loecher Duffy of Glen, N.H.; two grandchildren whom she
dearly loved, Quinn and Cian Duffy of Glen; a sister, Lenore Tagan; and a
brother, Thomas Vorce. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Vorce, in
1998. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 4, at 11 a.m. in St.
Paul’s Cathedral in Burlington with burial in the memorial garden. In lieu

LAURA WHITCOMB MAIDEN
....show BARRE — Laura Whitcomb Maiden, 99, of Academy
Street died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the home of her granddaughter, Carol
Rogers, in Montrose, Pa. She was born Dec. 26, 1901, in New London, Conn.,
the daughter of Frederick and Isabella (King) Whitcomb. At the age of 10,
she came to Fairlee, where she attended elementary and high schools. In
1920, she graduated from Goddard Seminary. Mrs. Maiden married Lee A. Maiden
Sr. He died Sept. 7, 1966. In earlier years, she worked the Homer Fitts Co.
in Barre and later for Dr. Fay Mann’s dentist office in Barre. In later
years, she was a homemaker. Her memberships included the Church of the Good
Shepherd (Episcopal), and the Order of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter 33, of
Barre for more than 81 years. She is survived by a son, Lee A. Maiden Jr. of
Pottstown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Carol Rogers and her husband of
Montrose, Lee A. Maiden III of McCook, Neb., and Mary Catherine Lewis and
her husband, Ken, of Fort Myers, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren and a
great-great-grandson; three sisters, Helen Whitcomb and Dorothy O’Bern, both
of New London, and Jean Williams of Chicago, Ill. She was predeceased by a
son, Norman Maiden, and a brother, Dr. Wayne Whitcomb. A funeral service
will be held Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral
Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery. Contributions in

ANNE D. MARSHALL
....show MONTPELIER — Anne D. Marshall, 87, of the Gary Home died May
26, 2001 at her home. She was the daughter of John J. Dillon and Stella M.
Long. She was born in Montpelier on September 19, 1913 and graduated from
Montpelier High School. She married Harry G. Marshall on July 12, 1941 at
Bethany Church in Montpelier. Mr. Marshall was employed by New England
Telephone and they lived in different areas of the state. Anne worked as a
bookkeeper for the Department of Liquor Control in Montpelier, Book Cellar in
Brattleboro, Laneau Plumbing Contractors in Burlington and Essex School
District in Essex Jct., Vt. In 1987, they returned to Montpelier and lived on
Freedom Drive. Anne was a member of the ski patrol at Smuggler’s Notch Ski
Area, Telephone Pioneers of America and was a Rotary-Ann. Survivors include a
daughter, Judith Still of South Yarmouth, Mass.; a son, Thomas Marshall and
his we, Linda of Washington, NH; three grandchildren, Thomas Marshall, Jr.,
Gretchen Marshall and Michael Still; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs.
Marshall was pre-deceased by her husband on December 31, 1994, infant sister,
Dorothy, and two brothers, Robert and Harold Dillon. Calling hours will be
held from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30
School Street, Montpelier, Vt. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m.
during calling hours. Burial will be in the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick,

SHIRLEY B. METAYER
....show WATERBURY — Shirley B. Metayer, 74, a longtime
resident of Waterbury, passed away at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on
Saturday, May 26, 2001. Born in Shelburne on November 30, 1926, she was the
daughter of the late Emile P. and Ethel (Sweeney) Bordeaux. On March 20, 1965,
she married Marcel Metayer in Montpelier. Shirley attended schools in
Waterbury and as a young woman, worked as a psychiatric technician at the
Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. She later worked at the Waterbury
Elementary School where she ran the breakfast program for many years. Most
recently she was employed as a bus driver for Harwood Union High School in
Duxbury. Her memberships included the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens and the
Harry N. Cutting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 59. Her leisure time was
filled with crocheting, gardening and spending time with her family. She is
survived by her husband of Waterbury; a daughter, Gaila Perry of Waterbury;
two grandchildren, Scott Wood of Waterbury and Penny W. Walker of Berlin; two
great-granddaughters, Ashley N. Wood of Waterbury and Danielle Walker of
Berlin; her step-children, Sandy-Jo Kallstrom of Washington State, Tammy
McGinn of Fairfax, Marc Metayer of Barre, and Barry Metayer of Milton; three
sisters, Lillian Tibbitts of Morrisville, Lucille LaFreniere of Orange, Conn.,
and Carol Heil of Bethel; a brother, Robert Bordeaux of San Antonio, Texas; as
well as nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Bernard Bordeaux, Melvin Bordeaux,
and Arnold Bordeaux predeceased her. Funeral services will be held from St.

Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a long battle with
cancer. He was born Sept. 6, 1943 in Springfield, Mass., to the late Pierre
and Helen (Fickweiler) Oustinoseparate His family moved from New York City to
Burlington in 1953. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1960, he
attended the University of Vermont. In 1967, he moved to Fletcher and
successfully ran clothing stores and restaurants and later became a local
surveyor and contractor. In recent years he spent his winters at his residence
in Naples, Fla. He is survived by a daughter, Alexis Oustinoff of New York
City; a son, Arie Oustinoff of Jeffersonville; a sister, Elizabeth Oustinoff
Albers and niece, Maia Albers of North Salem, N.Y.; an aunt, Alice Moore of
Agawam, Mass., and cousins in California. There will be a memorial service on
Saturday, June 9, at 1:00 p.m. at the Williston Memorial Garden in the Thomas

ISLE LA MOTTE — Barbara J. Allen, 68, of Isle La Motte passed away in her
home on Sunday, May 27, 2001, after a courageous struggle with a long
illness. Barbara, the daughter of Merlin and Sadie Wilson, was born in
Wadsworth, Ohio on Nov. 13, 1932, spending her childhood in the greater
Cleveland area, and attending West Tech High School in Cleveland before
moving to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in 1950. Barbara enriched
many lives. Her children and grandchildren will remember her strength and
resolution of spirit and her delight in the company of her family. She will
also be remembered for her kindness and generosity, always there for those
who needed her.. Barbara approached her struggle with a difficult illness
with dignity and hope. Her husband and children appreciate the many family
members, friends and caregivers who supported her. The family would
especially like to thank two exceptionally wonderful people, Betty Abair and
Janice Hayes, for their compassion and care during Barbara’s final days and
hours. A special thanks to the doctors and staff at the Vermont Center for
Cancer Medicine and the VNA nurses and aides for their professional care and
support. Barbara is survived by her husband, Earl ”Skip” Allen of Isle La
Motte; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Nancy Allen of Valley Center,

and a special aunt, Cornelia Bordac of Wadsworth, Ohio. A memorial service
will be held in San Diego, Calif. next month followed by a memorial service

passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Fletcher Allen Health
Care. He was born in Burlington on Sept. 26, 1958, the son of Richard and
Norma (LaValley) Corrigan Sr. He was employed at the Vermont Tent Co. in
South Burlington. He leaves his children, Heather, Robert, Jimmy,
Christopher and Dillon; stepdaughter Katina; six grandchildren; a sister,
Carol Meade; three brothers, Robert and his wife, Charlotte, Corrigan,
Gerald Corrigan, and Greg and his wife, Debbie, Corrigan; his mother-in-law,
Iris Houle; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.In
addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Deborah A.
Corrigan, in 1996. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 31, at noon

WEYLAND H. HUBBARD

JOHNSON — Weyland Herbert Hubbard, 70, a lifelong resident of this
area, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001, at his home with his loving family
at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 13,
1930, in Jeffersonville, the beloved son of the late Robert and Ruth
(Thayer) Hubbard. He was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1948.
As a veteran, he had served his country well as a sergeant in the U.S. Army,
82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the American Legion of Johnson,
Post 46. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator, working for many
years with the International Union of Operating Engineers, IUOE Local 98. He
married the former Patricia Royea on June 14, 1958. Together they raised
three wonderful boys, a commitment Weyland was dedicated to, always
maintaining a protective family vigil. He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling
in Vermont’s great outdoors and was an active member of the Sterling Snow
Riders. Having a great appreciation for antiques, he furnished their home
with pieces he had personally refurbished over the years. He served his
community well as a member of the Boy Scouts Review Committee and past
member of the Johnson Selectboard. Weyland loved the community he lived in
and dedicated much of his time in the Hubbard families ”adoption” of the
Power House Bridge. With his good friend Raymond, he cared daily for the
seasonal bridge displays as well as many flower barrels and hanging potted
plants so nicely displayed along Main Street, helping to present Johnson as
a true home town comfortably welcoming all residents and visitors alike.
Weyland was a loved and respected patron of Johnson. His warm personality
and unconditional love and attentions will be greatly missed by all those
who had the good fortune to know and love him. He was truly blessed with
great friends and wonderful neighbors. He is survived by his loving wife,
Patricia (Royea) Hubbard of Johnson; three wonderful sons, Robert Hubbard
and his wife, Stephanie, of Connecticut, Steven Hubbard and his wife, Kathy,
of Fairfax, and Larry Hubbard of Waterville; two sisters, Janice Rushford
and her husband, Carl, of Eden Mills, Helaine Perkins and her husband,
Richard G., of Johnson; five wonderful and much loved grandchildren, Robbie,
Robin, Adam, Elizabeth and Ashley; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, May 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hayes Rich
Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in the United Churchapter of
Johnson on Thursday, May 31, at 2 p.m. Interment will be private and at the

....show SOUTH BURLINGTON — Barbara Sauer-Sandage passed
away unexpectedly Sunday, May 27, 2001, at her home in South Burlington.
Barbara was born June 22, 1934, in Burlington, the daughter of Charles and
Anne Middlebrook. She graduated from Burlington High School and continued on
to receive a bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of
Vermont and a master of fine arts from Yale University. In June 1957, she
married Charles Sauer, her lifelong love. As the wife of an officer in the
U.S. Army, she traveled all over the country and, later, all over the world
with him until his death in 1967 during combat in Vietnam. Left alone with her
two daughters, Alda and Marianne, Barbara committed her life to providing a
comfortable and safe home for her family. After the birth of her son, Larry,
in a second marriage to Larry Sandage Sr., Barbara entered the business
community as an advertising executive. She also opened her heart and home to
Chivas, the daughter of her second husband’s previous marriage. To provide for
her family, her passion for advertising inspired her to found Sandage
Advertising and Marketing in 1979. She continued to be very active in the
community, both personally and professionally, until her death. Barbara lived
her life for her family. She dedicated herself to giving her children and
loved ones the experiences and environment she herself did not have. Barbara’s
remarkable strength and courage made it possible for her to successfully raise
four children and manage a business. Her compassion, humor, and her tremendous
love of life will always be remembered by all those she touched. Barbara is
survived by her two sisters, Marianne Feeley and Harriet Luck; her four
children and their spouses, Alda and Steve Norcross, Marianne and Jeff Davis,
Chivas, and Larry; and her seven grandchildren, Christopher, Barbara, Rebekkah,
Anna, deLana, Sophie, and Jordan. She also leaves an extended family of her
own making and many special friends. They will all miss her dearly. Visiting
hours will be held Thursday, May 31, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ready
Funeral Home, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. A non-denominational memorial
service will be held in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 400
Swift St., South Burlington, on Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. There will be a
celebration of Barbara’s life following the memorial service at her residence.
Interment will be held at the convenience of the family, in Fairfield, Conn.

....show MANCHESTER, Conn. — Georgiana (Mason) Ather,
95, of Manchester died Monday, May 28, 2001, at an area convalescent home.
She was born in Tinmouth, Vt.,March 6, 1906, daughter of the late Walter and
Charlotte (Davis) Mason. She resided in Starksboro, where her heart will
always remain, and had lived in Elmwoodbefore moving to Manchester in 1952.
Mrs. Ather had worked for many years at New Departure Machine Co. of Elmwood
and retired from Royal Typewriter Inc. after 26 years with the company. She
was the beloved mother of three sons and daughters-in-law, LeRoy and Glenda
Tarr of Earlsboro, Okla., Roger and Priscilla (St. Pierre) Ather of
Manchester, and Raymond and Jane (Ashton) Ather of Bolton; as well as many
wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and
nephews. She was the youngest of 12 children, all of whom prececeased her.
Graveside services will be held Friday, June 8, at 2 p.m. in the Green
Mountain Cemetery in Starksboro. A memorial service will be held Sunday,
June 10, at 4 p.m. at the South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St.,

....show LADY LAKE, Fla. — Irving Bates, 73, of San Lorenzo Court
died Monday, May 28, 2001, at his residence. Born in Burlington, Vt., on
Sept. 7, 1927, he was a commissioner of state building for the state of
Vermont. Memberships included Masonic Lodge in Vermont, Auro Lodge in
Montpelier, Vt., High 12 Club in Lady Lake, American Legion in Lady Lake,
and the Elks Club in Belleview. He was a veteran of World War II, having
served with the U.S. Marines in the Korean War. Survivors include his wife,
Betty Bates of Lady Lake; and a nephew.
JOAN MARIE BOLDUC
....show MECHANICSVILLE, Md./ADDISON — Joan Marie Bolduc of
Mechanicsville and Addison died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Johns Hopkins
Hospital in Baltimore. She was 60. Born Nov. 10, 1940, in Burlington, she
was the daughter of Norma Mary Bessett Desautels and the late Romeo Roland
Desautels. She was an aeronautical technician for B.F. Goodrich. In addition
to her mother, her beloved husband, Yves Joseph Bolduc, survives her. She
was the loving mother of Andre Bolduc of Ferrisburgh, Karen Deyette of
Fairfield, and Ann Bolduc of Mechanicsvile; the sister of Claire Heisler of
Raleigh, N.C., Betty Harrington of Addison, Mary Basiliere of Essex
Junction, John Desautels of Bothell, Wash., and the late Michael Desautels.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Sue, Eve, Justin, Rae, Joseph,
Bridgette, Jennifer, Bryan Jr., Jesika and Chase. She was the
great-grandmother of Emily. A memorial Mass will be celebrated June 5, 2001,
at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 115 Barlow St., Winooski, by

....show ADDISON — Gerardus Gosliga, 80, passed away at his
home on Monday, May 28, 2001, peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his
family. ”Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints”
Psalm 116:15 He was born December 17, 1920, in Beetgumermolen of The
Netherlands, the son of Jacob and Froukje Gosliga. He immigrated with his
wife, Grace Zylstra Gosliga, of Anjum of The Netherlands, and their children
to the United States in December 1949. He celebrated 54 years of marriage
with Grace. Gerry was very devoted to his Lord, family, church, Christian
education and conservation. He loved to work on his dairy farm and in his
garden in Addison. He began his farming career as a young man of 13,
managing the family potato farm in Holland. World War II forced him into
service in the Dutch Underground where he aided many people. His immigration
to America led him to Minnesota, California, New York and finally Vermont
where he built a thriving dairy farm. He became a respected board member of
the Otter Creek Rural Conservatioin District of Middlebury. He is survived
by his wife, Grace Gosliga; their eight children, Wilma Breiland, Jacob
Gosliga, Frances Bearor, Lubbert Gosliga, Irene Paresky, Alice Van Wyck,
Geraldine Trudo, their spouses, and Grace Gosliga; and 18 grandchildren; his
brother Cecil Gosliga of Ontario, Calif.; his sisters Akke Tuinman, Utrecht,
The Netherlands and Hijlkje de Jong Leiderdorp, The Netherlands. Funeral
services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, at the Champlain Valley

HINESBURG — Bernard Edward Harris, 21, of Hinesburg died as the result of
an auto accident Monday, May 28, 2001, in Hinesburg. He was born in
Burlington on March 19, 1980, the son of Robert F. and Deborah G. (Haynes)
Harris. Bernie was a graduate of CVU, Class of 1998, where he played soccer
and baseball. He was attending the Community College of Vermont and was
employed at Costco, but his dream was to be a pilot. He enjoyed mountain
climbing, snowboarding and the outdoors. He loved his family and friends
above all; they meant so much to him. He loved life and everything it had to
offer. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Deborah Harris of
Hinesburg; three brothers, Daniel R. Harris and his companion, Kristen
Hendee of Starksboro, Samuel F. Harris and Edmund J. Harris, both of

....show BURLINGTON — Elizabeth McBurney Park, 91, of the Burlington Health
and Rehabilitation Center passed away Monday, May 28, 2001, in Burlington.
She was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Denver Colo., the eldest daughter of Robert
and Ethel Grace (Campbell) McBurney. She held an A.B. degree from Geneva
College, Beaver Falls, Pa., and B.S and L.S. degrees from the University of
Denver. She returned to Geneva College as librarian to put her three younger
siblings through college, then worked in the public library of her home
city. In 1937, she married James R. Park, a member of the Air Force
Intelligence Service in Washington, D.C. during the war. She took a job with
the National Education Association and was President of the Arlington branch
of the American Association of University Women. Her large Victory garden
was the envy of the Buckingham community. Following the war, they moved to
Montreal where Jim served as the Chief of Aeronautical Information Services
of the International Civil Aviation Organization, a branch of the United
Nations. Betty hosted many dinners for visiting dignitaries and diplomats

many talents as seamstress and potter. Upon retirement, the American couple
returned to the U.S. where they designed and built a house in e mountains of
Stowe, where many a visitor found peace, beauty and relaxation. Whever they
lived “”Betty” was known for her hospitality – she loved to serve afternoon
”tea” to family and friends. Betty was a member of the Lamoille County
Quilters and took the Best of Show award at the North East Quilters Guild
Fall meeting in 1985. She also enjoyed volunteering at Copley Hospital in
Morrisville. Betty and Jim’s final home together was in Williston, next to
their daughter’s family farm at Cedar Bend. Raised as a Scottish Covenantor
(Reformed Presbyterian). church life had always been important to her. She
was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., the
Presbyterian Church of the town of Mount Royal, Quebec Canada, and the Stowe
Community and Williston Federated Churches of Vermont. Betty is survived by
a daughter, Margaret Elaine Park of Essex Junction; a son, Robert McBurney
Park and his wife, Carolyn of Cincinnati, Ohio; three granddaughters, Megan
of Cincinnati, Bronwyn Elizabeth Murphy and her husband, Chris of Groton,
Mass., and Margaret Kimberly Dostal and her husband, Greg, of Juneau,
Alaska; one grandson, David Raymond Park and his wife, Julie, of Seattle,
Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Giulia Elaine Park of Seattle; four
great-grandsons, Philip Raymond Park of Seattle, and James Tanner Murphy,
David Edward Murphy, and William Christian Murphy of Groton; one sister,
Mildred Rhodes and her husband, Donald; and one brother, Milton McBurney of
Denver, Colo. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. James McBurney of
Pueblo, Colo. She will always be loved and remembered for the Irish twinkle
in her eyes, her light sense of humor, her inquiring mind and her quiet,
unassuming faith (even through the loss of her sight.) A celebration of her

of Bellows Falls died at the McGirr Nursing Home, Bellows Falls, on Monday,
May 28, 2001. She was born April 29, 1903, in Chatagua, N.Y., the daughter
of Robert C. and Anna (McDowell) Gray. Mrs. Slattery attended schools in New
York and worked at Lecu-yer’s Manufacturing and the Liquidometer in Bellows
Falls. In September 1921, she married James E. Slattery Sr., who died in
1962.She is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Reed of Bellows Falls and
Barbara E. Guindon of Springfield, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was predeceased by
her husband, one daughter, Corinne A. Gillen of Sebring, Fla.; three sons,

resident of Fair Haven died unexpectedly Monday, May 28, 2001, in the
Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland. Mrs. Tobin was born on May 29,
1912, in Taftville, Conn., the daughter of the late George and Delia (Letendre)
Giguere. She attended schools in Connecticut and graduated from Norwich Free
Academy in Norwich, Conn. Leona was employed for several years as the
manager of the Castleton State College bookstore, retiring from there in
1977. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in
Fair Haven and after her retirement, Leona volunteered much of her time to
various organizations in the surrounding area. Mrs. Tobin is survived by her
five children, Mary T. White of Chandler, Ariz., Jean E. Tobin of New York
City, John D. Tobin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Williston, Virginia A. Allen
and her husband, Brian of Bolton Landing, N.Y., and Kathryn T. Smith and her
husband, Joel, of Fair Haven; nine grandchildren, Amy and Katy White, Peter
and Susan Tobin, Nicholas and Jordan Tipson, Matthew Allen, and Timothy and
Amanda Smith; three great-grandchildren Megan, Allison and Andrea Tobin ;

was born Sept. 14, 1919, in Rockingham, the daughter of Leverett C. and
Frances (Stockwell) Lovell. She graduated in 1937 from Bellows Falls High
School and in 1942 from the University of Vermont. May 23, 1942, she was
married in Albany, Ga., to Donald E. Wilson, who died in 1961. She taught
school in Bristol for two years, then was a dressmaker in her home in
Bristol for 40 years. Dec. 2, 1972, she was married in Bristol to Glenn F.
Jackman, who died in 1974. In 1986, she retired and moved to White River
Junction to live with her sister, Aldis Dow. Ann is survived by two sisters,
Elisabeth L. Bowman of Toms River, N.J., and Aldis L. Dow of White River
Junction; a son, Andon C. Wilson of Ludlow; a stepdaughter, Andrea Jackman
Halnon of Lincoln; a stepson, Dennis Jackman of Bristol; four
stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her
husbands, she was predeceased by a sister, Patience Burke, and a brother, L.

52, of Saint Simons Island died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home. Leigh
was born April 8, 1949, in Wallkill, N.Y. In 1965, the family moved to
Shelburne, Vt., where Leigh graduated from Champlain Valley Union High
School in 1967. Leigh lived in and around Essex Junction, Vt., and was
employed at Flanders Building Supply until he moved to Saint Simons Island
in 1993, at which time he worked at Skip Russell Construction until the time
of his illness. Leigh is survived by his son, Miles Prescott, currently
residing in Vermont; a brother, Keith “”Seymour” Prescott and his wife,
Mary “”Molly,” of Williston, Vt.; a stepbrother, Dana Flanders of Atlanta,
Ga., and his wife, Liev, and son, Will; niece Dia Prescott and her husband,
Greg Farkas of Essex Junction; niece Orianna Prescott of Essex Junction;
Michael and Scott Graham of Brunswick; and several cousins. Leigh was
predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Phyllis (Flanders) Prescott. A
private service was held on Jecklyll Island on Sunday, June 3.

formerly of Middlebury, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, with her daughter,
Margaret, beside her. Kathleen was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England on
Nov. 21, 1097, the daughter of John and Margaret (Jones) Danson. She trained
for a career in elocution and acting and eaned a gold medal from the London
Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She taught speech and elocution, mostly
to children, before her marriage in 1931, to George R. Read, also of Burnley.
They resided in England, Geneva, Switzerland, Mineola and Long Island N.Y.
Kathleen moved to Vermont in 1964, and lived in Middlebury for 25 years. She
worked in the accounting offices of Middlebury College and Benjamin Brothers
Dry Cleaners. She was a member of the Middlebury Community Players, served
as treasurer for the Vermont State and Middlebury Garden Clubs and the
Middlebury Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship. She was a member of the
Modern Homemakers Club of Bridport and an honorary member of the Green
Mountain Branch of the National League of American Pen Women. Kathleen was
predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Read
Rother of Bridport; two granddaughters, Victoria Ross of Burlington and
Lorraine Nourse of Carson City, Nev. and their husbands; and five
great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Middlebury
Congregational Church on Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. There will be no calling

trades. He was a devoted father and family man who will be missed by all who

DAVID ALAN WHITWELL WILSON, M.D.
....show MONTPELIER — David Alan Whitwell Wilson, M.D.,
died after a short illness Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center. He lived in Rye, N.Y., until he retired 16 years ago to
Montpelier. Dr. Wilson was born June 9, 1917, in London, England, the sixth
child of Philip Whitwell Wilson and Alice Selena Collins Wilson. At the age of
2, he immigrated with his family to New York City. He was a graduate of the
Riverdale Country School, Princeton University, Class of 1938, and the College
of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, Class of 1942. Dr. Wilson
was married in 1941 to Madeleine Anne Lenore deSilvia Holden, who died in
1996. In 1999, he married Marjorie Bannon White. A captain in the U.S. Army,
Dr. Wilson served during World War II in Europe. He participated in the
invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. His medical career spanned
nearly half a century. He completed his medical training as an intern at St.
Luke’s Hospital in New York City and as a resident at both the Manhattan
Veterans Administration Hospital and United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y. Dr.
Wilson was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the
American College of Surgeons. From 1945 until 1985, he was an attending
surgeon at United Hospital. For many years, he was the director of surgery
there and from 1981 until 1985, he was the president of the medical staff. He
was also a member of the hospital’s board of trustees from 1978 to 1985. After
moving to Montpelier in 1985, he consulted on Medicare eligibility issues. A
lover of sailing, Dr. Wilson was a member of the American Yacht Club. He was
the surgeon for the Rye Fire and Police departments. In Montpelier, he sang in
the choir of Christ Church. He was one of Vermont’s first guardians ad litem,
volunteers assigned by the court to promote and protect the best interests of
children involved in legal proceedings. He was also a guide at Vermont’s
Statehouse. In addition to his wife, Dr. Wilson is survived by his children,
Holden Charles Wilson of New Orleans, La., Prudence Wilson Barton of Lanes-
borough, Mass., David M. Wilson of Duxbury, and Mary Alice Williams of Warren;
and his stepchildren, Jill Keating of Wolcott, Jeffrey White of Georgia,
Janice Porter of Putnam Lake, N.Y., and their spouses. He is also survived by
16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001, in Christ Church in Montpelier. It will
be followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts in

....show WOLCOTT — Frank Nathan Colgrove, 93, of Wolcott
died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville, surrounded
by family and loved ones. He was born July 26, 1907, in Wolcott, the son of
John N. and Emma (Alger) Colgrove. He attended Wolcott public schools and
Craftsbury Academy, graduating with the Class of 1927. May 1, 1935, he
married Eva Beatrice Fisk in East Craftsbury. In his earlier years, he was
employed by Earl Hayden, in road construction. Following his marriage, he
and his wife purchased a dairy farm in Wolcott, which they owned and
operated for more than 66 years. He was a well-known maple syrup producer.
Frank was a member of the Wolcott United Methodist Church and a past member
of the town of Wolcott selectboard. His interests included hunting, fishing
and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Eva of Wolcott; two daughters,
Velma White of Danville and Donna Phelps of Morrisville; three
grandchildren, Wendy Blake of Woodbury, Terry Barrett of Morrisville and
Gail Phelps of Stowe; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Morse of
Gorham, Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased
by two brothers, George Colgrove Sr. and John Colgrove; and two sisters,
Mildred Clark and Rose Rogers. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral

St. Albans since 1942, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in St. Peter’s
Hospital in Albany, N.Y., following a four-month illness. She was born in
Lisbon Falls, Maine, on Jan. 10,1916, the daughter of the late John and
Elizabeth (Katula) Cabak. Aug. 23, 1941, she married Dario “”Doc” Comi in
Northfield. Doc was a retired teacher and coach at Bellows Free Academy in
St. Albans. He died April 5, 1990. In addition to being a homemaker,
Margaret was employed for many years as bookkeeper for Hatch Hardware Store
in St. Albans. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Catholic
Daughters of the Americas, the Autonoe Club, the Duplicate Bridge Club,
Midway Home Demonstration Group and Franklin County Senior Citizens. She
enjoyed sporting events and playing bridge. Margaret is survived by her son
and his wife, Richard and Sarah Comi of Glenmont, N.Y.; her daughter and her
husband, Joanne and William B. Dochterman of Swisher, Iowa; a sister, Agnes
Flood of Montpelier; three brothers and their wives, Howard and Stella Brown
of Pasadena, Md., Frank and Rhea Brown of Northboro, Mass., and Jim and
Sandy Brown of Dellwood, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Ann Marie and her
husband, Nick Morog, David Comi, Jennifer and her husband, Kim Strohecker,

NAPLES, Fla. — Edward B. Dailey, 64, of Naples and longtime resident of
Fairfield, Conn., who retired after 24 years as controller of Warnaco and
was president of his own consulting firm, Dailey and Associates, died
Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his home in Fairfield. Born Jan. 1, 1937, in
Burlington, Vt., the son of the late Edward J. and Catherine Ragamata
Dailey, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1958, where he was
president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was the chairman of the UVM
Alumni Annual Fund, 1989-1990, and in 1990 received the university’s
Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He served in the U.S. Air Force,
retiring as a captain. He was active in Habitat for Humanity in Naples and
served on many community boards including the Fairfield Prep Board of
Regents and Southwest Community Health Center in Bridgeport, Conn. He was a
member of the Patterson Club in Fairfield and the Pelican’s Nest Golf Club
in Bonita Springs, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Dailey of Naples
and Fairfield; three children, Dr. Mark E. Dailey and his wife, Moira, of
Simsbury, Conn., Cathleen A. Reardon and her husband, Christopher, of Little

....show WAiTSFIELD — Nancy Elizabeth Allen Dasaro, 36,
passed away at her Waitsfield home Wednesday, May 30, 2001, surrounded by her
family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Summit, N.J. on
Oct. 11, 1964, she was the daughter of Charles and Betsy Allen. On May 25,
1991, she married Rob Dasaro in Duxbury. Nancy attended high school in Basking
Ridge, N.J. and was a 1983 graduate of Vermont Academy. Moving to Vermont with
her family, she continued her education graduating in 1985 from Champlain
College where she was named to the Junior College All-American Ski Team in
1984 and 1985. After working in advertising sales for Radio Vermont – WDEV in
Waterbury for several years, she moved to Boston to complete her degree work
at Emerson College, graduating in 1990. Following her marriage, she and her
husband moved to Carbondale, Colo. where she worked as the office manager for
the Aspen Hard Rock Cafe. Their daughter, Sophie Marie, was born in 1997.
Nancy and her family returned to the Mad River Valley in 2000 to be closer to
her family and friends. She was an ardent skier, biker, hiker and loved to be
in the outdoors. She was beloved by many, wherever she lived. She is survived
by her husband and daughter of Waitsfield; her mother and father of Duxbury;
two brothers, Rob Allen of Duxbury and Chuck Allen and his wife, Susan, and
their children Sam, Joe, and Rose, all of Rye, N.H.; her father and
mother-in-law, Robert and Patricia Dasaro of Jericho; a sister-in-law, Suzanne
Dasaro, of Las Animas, Colo., two brothers-in-law, John Dasaro and his wife,
Candace, of Fairfield, and Patrick Dasaro of Telluride, Colo.; as well as many

....show BARRE TOWN — Laura V. Hanson, 81, of Cobble Hill Road,
died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Woodbridge Nursing Home in Berlin. She
was a long-time Recreation Director for the City of Barre. Born March 30,
1920, in Websterville, she was the daughter of Albert and Obdulia (Cruz)
Villa. She was a Class of 1938 graduate of Spaulding High School. She began
her employment with the City of Barre as a secretary in the Recreation
Department in 1962 and later became Assistant Recreation Director. In 1982
she was appointed Recreation Director, a position she held until her
retirement in July, 1987. The Barre City Annual Report was dedicated to her
that year. She was a member of the Hedding United Methodist Church, the
United Methodist Women in which she had held several offices, Trow Hill Home
Demonstration Group, the Cobble Hill Grange and was one of the founders of
the Lighthouse in Barre for teenagers. She was also a founder of the Trow
Hill School PTA and helped found the youth groups at her church. On March
19, 1982, she was recognized for her outstanding service to her community at
the Joint Service Clubs Recognition Banquet. She had been named Honorary
Chairperson in 1988 of the Central Vermont Junior Basketball Tournament. She
especially enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting and following all sports,
especially professional sketball and Larry Bird. She also enjoyed

North Montpelier, who currently resides in the Mayo Residence Home in
Northfield. Survivors include a son, Wayne Hanson and his wife, Susan of
Monroe, Conn.; two daughters, Norma Reynolds and her husband, David, of
Montpelier, and Elaine Sharrow and her husband, Harvey, of Charlotte; three
grandchildren Lindsey and Eric Hanson and Patrick Sharrow; a special niece,
Carmen La Flamme Sharrow of Richmond; two sisters, Rose Usle and Mary
Argenti, both of Barre; a brother, Ramon Villa of St. Albans; and nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, Julian, Roger and
Fernando Villa; and two sisters, Phyllis Coletti and Ampara Villa. A Service
of Remembrance will be held Sunday, June 3, 2001, at 2:30 p.m. in the
Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre. Interment will be in Hope

....show WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. — Richard E. Powers, 76, West
Yarmouth, Mass., died in his home Wednesday, May 30 after a long illness. He
was married to the late Helen L. (White) Powers, who died in December. Born
and raised in Worcester, Mr. Powers graduated from Worcester South High School
in 1943. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II with Marine
Squadron VMF-323, based in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged with
the rank of Corporal in 1945. Mr. Powers was employed by the Massachusetts
State Highway Department as an inspector prior to becoming general manager of
the former Campanella and Cardi Construction Co., Cape Cod Division, in
Sandwich, during the mid 1950’s and 1960’s. From the mid 1960’s to 1975, he
owned and operated Powers Construction Co., in Yarmouth. He then served as the
manager of the Trimount Bituminous Products Co. from 1975 to 1995. From 1995
to the present, Mr. Powers owned his own company, Green Acres Construction Co.
Mr. Powers lived in West Yarmouth for the past 50 years. He was a winter
resident of Pompano Beach, Fla. for several years. He was a communicant of St.
Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis and Assumption Catholic Church in Pompano
Beach. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club. Mr.
Powers is survived by four daughters, Maria Arseneaux of Yarmouthport, Michele
Holton of Essex Junction, Rosemary Palmer of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Maureen
Alberti of West Yarmouth; one son, Barry Powers of Brewster; three brothers,
Robert Powers of Whitman, Bernard Powers of Osterville and William Powers of
Pocasset; 10 grandchildren, Lewis and Justin Alberti, Beth and Kevin Arseneaux,
Lindsay and Christopher Holton, Makaila and Natalee Palmer, and Eli and Shauni
Powers and several nces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday June 4 at
9 a.m. in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave. South Yarmouth, to be
followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South
St., Hyannis. Burial will follow in Chandler Gray Cemetery, West Yarmouth.
Visiting hours will be Sunday June 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

ZELLWOOD, Fla./GRAND ISLE — Jeanne Wedlick of Grand Isle, died May 30,
2001, at the home of her sisters, Cecile and Pauline in Zellwood, Fla.
following a long illness. Jeanne was born in 1927 in Canada, the daughter of
Mary and Laurent Roy. She graduated from Mount St. Mary’s Academy and Fanny
Allen Hospital School of Nursing. Jeanne was a dedicated nurse, retiring
from Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, after a 50 year career in the
nursing profession. She was predeceased by her husband, William, better
known in Vermont as Santa Bill. She is survived by her daughter Paula, and
her husband, Richard of Rome, NY, her step-daughter Joyce Brandenburg of New
Jersey; five sisters, who were very dear to her, Annette Diemand,
Elizabethtown, N.Y., Cecile and Pauline Roy and Marie Hall, Longwood,
Florida and Bernadine Magdalenski, Haydenville, Mass. Her sisters, Annette,
Cecile, and Pauline lovingly cared for Jeanne in the last year of her
illness. Jeanne’s grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, and Kara Fedors, were the
joy of her life and they will always remember the wonderful times with their
Grandma Jeanne. The family wishes to thank High Peaks Hospice of
Elizabethtown, NY and Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs, Fla. A
memorial service will be held in Grand Isle at the convenience of the

the Addison Baptist Church. She was employed at Addison County Home Health
and Hospice. She is survived by her mother, Delna Burpee, and a brother,
William R. Burpee, both of Addison; and several cousins. Funeral services

MARTHA MONTOPOLI FITZGERALD
....show BARRE — Martha Montopoli Fitzgerald, 84,
formerly of Springvale, Maine, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Woodridge
Nursing Home in Berlin. Born July 21, 1916, in Barre, she was the daughter
of Gildo and Paolina (Rosatt) Montopoli. She attended Barre area schools and
graduated from Spaulding High School in 1936. In December 1940, she
graduated from Heaton Hospital School of Nursing in Montpelier. Feb. 5,
1948, she married Wilam Fitzgerald in Burlington. They lived in Barre until
moving to Springvale in 1952. He died Sept. 8, 1973. In 1998, she moved back
to Vermont. She especially enjoyed reading, crosswords and gardening. Mrs.
Fitzgerald was a nurse at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, Barre City
Hospital, and Hillcrest Nursing Home in Sanford, Maine. For several years,
she was a member of Good Shepherd Nursing of Biddeford, Maine. Survivors
include a son, Brian J. Fitzgerald and his wife, Victoria, of Williston; a
daughter, Martha Bich- rest of Portland, Maine; and nephews and nieces.
Three brothers, Dr. Michael Cerasoli, Joseph Cerasoli, and John Cerasoli;
and a sister, Bertina Chiuchiolo, predeceased her. A memorial service will
be held Tuesday, June 5, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home,
7 Academy St., Barre. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Hope

GEORGIA — Viva M. Martin, 83, a resident of Georgia for 31 years, passed
away Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Holiday House Nursing Facility following a
lengthy illness. She was born in Alburg on June 14, 1917, the daughter of
the late Floyd and Donna (Duba) Creller. Her husband, Harry A. Martin, died
July 29, 1969. Mrs. Martin was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals
and being with her family. Survivors include three sons and their wives,
Ronald and Anne Martin of St. Albans Town, Vance and Cora Martin of North
Hero, and Dale and Sis Martin of Georgia; two daughters, Norma and her
husband, Tom Scullen, of Portsmouth, R.I., and Carole Burns of Delray Beach,
Fla.; two sisters, Juanita Stone of Rouses Point, N.Y., and Genevieve Secore
of Hershey, Pa.; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and nieces
and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by
two sons, Harry Martin Jr., in his infancy, and Kevin D. Martin, on June 26,
1995; a sister and six brothers. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at
11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Clark officiating.
Interment will be in the family lot in Alburg Center Cemetery. In lieu of

Fletcher Allen Health Care after a lingering illness. She was born Sept. 8,
1928, in Winooski, the daughter of Clifford and Beatrice (Clarmont) LaBelle.
She is survived by one son, Robert W. Miller II of Texas; her daughters,
Christine Marshall of Swanton, Deborah Vierling of Colchester, Marte Robbins
and her husband, Christopher, of Burlington, and Tina Sawyer and her
husband, Erik, of South Royalton; nine grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. She also leaves her sisters, Phyllis Dumas, June Bergamo
and Maxine Brooks; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by
her husband, Robert M. Miller; a daughter, Rebecca Murray; and a brother,
Clifford LaBelle. Faye will be greatly missed by her many friends and her
loving family. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 6, in St.
Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at the

Thursday, May 31, 2001, at his home in West Addison. He was born Nov. 30,
1943, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Sylvain and Yvette (Poisson) Rheault.
He was a member of Community Bible Church in South Burlington. He was a very
hard worker, dedicated to his family, friends and community. He will be
greatly missed and eteranally loved by his family. Maurice is survived by
his wife, Laura Rheault of West Addison;’ two children, Michael Rheault of
Manchester and Michelle Rheault-Bissonette of West Addison; a granddaughter,
Bailey; and two more grandchildren on the way; two sisters, Jean Magdziarz
of Hooksett, N.H., and Jeanette Juranty of Portsmouth, N.H.; and several

....show BURLINGTON — Ida St. Jean, 91, of Burlington died Thursday,
May 31, 2001, in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a
long illness. She was born Oct. 15, 1909, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of
the late Joseph and Annie (Fratis) Gracie. Ida was the widow of Raymond St.
Jean. Ida dedicated most of her life to raising her family. She also worked
at the Shelburne Museum as a tour guid for more than 10 years, which
provided her great personal pleasure. She is survived by her son, Arnold and
his wife, Virginia St. Jean, of Milford, Pa.; a grandson, Michael of Port
Jefferson, Long Island, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Marlene Brigantino of Center
Reach, Long Island; and four great-grandsons. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated today, Saturday June 2, at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of
Siena Roman Catholic Church, Shelburne. Interment will follow in
Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. There will be no visiting

....show WINOOSKI/FAIRLEE/NEWBURY — Ann T. Tancreti, 74, passed away
Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center after
a long, courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born Aug. 16, 1926,
in Rochester, the daughter of Leonard and Emma (French) Thresher. She made
her home with her daughter Patricia A. Ruhl and son-in-law, Walter, of
Winooski for the past year and a half. Prior to that time, she resided in
the Newbury and Fairlee area for most of her life. Ann was a homemaker and
talented seamstress. She was married to Leon Kerry, who predeceased her.
Later she married Arnold Tancreti, who also predeceased her. She is survived
by two daughters, Patricia Ruhl of Winooski and Annette Tancreti of
Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Pauline Crombe of Ontario, N.Y., and Alice
McIntyre of Brattleboro; two brothers, Leonard Thresher of Randolph and
Leslie Thresher of Roxbury; a grandson, Neil Jepson of Poway, Calif., and a
great-grandson, Max Jepson Droney, also of Poway; as well as many nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Murray of Rutland, and
five brothers, Richard Thresher of Nebraska, Calvin Thresher of Randolph,
Raymond Thresher of Brattleboro, Daniel Thresher of Vershire and James
Thresher of Randolph; and her very dear friend, Fred Colbeth of Newbury. At
Ann’s request, there will be no visiting hours. In accordance with her
wishes, her remains will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at
the convenience of the family in Upper Plain Cemetery, Bradford. In lieu of

NEAL VANCEL TUCKER
....show ORANGE — Neal Vancel Tucker, 75, died peacefully,
surrounded by family, on May 31, 2001, in Central Vermont Medical Center in
Berlin after a brief illness. Born in Orange on Aug. 13, 1925, he was the son
of Wyness and Alyce (Morse) Tucker. The family lived in Orange at the Tucker
farm, where he attended and graduated from Wilson elementary School. He
accomplished taking both seventh and eighth grades during the same years to
ensure graduation. He married Lorraine Myrtice Beede on Sept. 5, 1947, at the
parsonage in Bradford. They resided on Tucker road in Orange for all of their
married life. Mr. Tucker worked for several years at the Tucker family farm.
He stared at Rock of Ages in March 1951. He retired as a superintendent at
Rock of Ages in 1977 after 26 years of service. Mr. Tucker was active with the
Orange County Sheriff’s Association for 35 years, serving as president for 12
years. He was the Orange town Civil Defense director for 23 years. He served
for three years as the Orange town road commissioner and eight years as a town
selectman. For many years, he was an active member of the Orange County
Democratic Party. Mr. Tucker was devoted to family and enjoyed hunting,
fishing and talking politics. He loved going to his hunting camp and enjoyed
working at the Tunbridge World’s Fair for many years. Survivors include his
wife and three siblings; two sisters, Madeliene Hilliker and Verna Robie; a
brother, Leon Tucker; six children who reside in Vermont, Ronald Tucker and
his wife, Bonnie, of Essex, Cynthia (Tucker) Catto and her husband, William,
of Barre Town, Doreen (Tucker) Dessureau and her husband, Andre, of
Washington, Kathy (Tucker) Girelli and her husband, Mario, of Colchester, Lori
(Tucker) Bibeau and her husband, Brian, of Barre Town, and Russell Tucker and
his wife, Carmella, of Orange; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three siblings, Melbourne Tucker, Regena Stevens and Max
Tucker. A service will be held Tuesday, June 5, at 3 p.m. in the Washington
Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Hooker and
Whitcomb Funeral Home. Contributions in his memory may be made to either the
