LAURINA S. (DONNA) SOTNICK
....show STOUGHTON, Mass. — Laurina S. Sotnick, 77,
of Stoughton passed away Thursday, May 10, 2001, in the Goddard Center for
Transitional Care after a long period of failing health. Born in Montgomery
Center, she was raised there and attended Vermont schools She had been a
resident of Stoughton for more than 45 years. Throughout her lifetime, she
worked at several jobs and was a homemaker for the last several years. She
was a loyal donor to several charities. She was foster mother to the
children of her late sister, Evelyn Sheltra. In her free time, she enjoyed
playing bingo and traveling to casinos with her friends. She will be greatly
missed by her children, Rodney A. Gross of Alabama, Audrey J. Lurie of
Mansfield, and Serge E. of Stoughton. She is survived by her brothers,
Burton Donna and Robert Donna, both of Vermont; six grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held in the Farley Funeral Home,
358 Park St. (Route 27), Stoughton, on Monday at 8:15 a.m. followed by a
funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton at 9 a.m. Visiting

FRANCIS EDMOND BAHRE
....show WEST ADDISION — Francis Edmond Bahre, 90, died
Friday, May 11, 2001, in Porter Medical Center in Middlebury. He was born
April 4, 1911, in Canton, Conn., the son of Amiel and Florence (Brucker)
Bahre. Francis was a carpenter and builder in Canton for most of his life
before retiring in 1973 and moving to West Brookfield, where he build his
“”cabin.” For the past eight years, he and his wife, Ethel, lived in West
Addison. He was an avid gardener. Francis’ last goal was to make age 90,
which he did, celebrated with nearly his entire family. He is survived by
his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Ethel (Bossardt) Bahre of West Addison;
three sons and their wives, Thomas E. and Barbara Bahre of West Addison,
Jared H. and Susan Bahre of Canton, and Richard A. and Sonia Bahre of North
Granby, Conn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Edith B. Nissen of Nantucket, Mass., and Bernice B. Wilson of Canton; and
several nieces and nephews. Francis was predeceased by two sons, Leonard
Herbert Bahre and William Bossardt Bahre; six brothers, Louis, Herbert,
Peter, Paul, Albert and Howard. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11
a.m. in Vincent Funeral Home in Canton. Interment will be in Southwest

IVALINE BLISS
....show JEFFERSONVILLE/MORRISVILLE — Ivaline Bliss, 90, died
Friday, May 11, 2001, in Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville. She was born in
Jeffersonville on Aug. 14, 1910, the daughter of Lawrence and Etta (Davis)
Thomas. Ivaline lived most of her life within this part of Lamoille County.
She was a graduate of Cambridge High School. Nov. 23, 1933, she married
William W. Bliss, who predeceased her. Ivaline centered her life around her
family and home. She was an active member of the Second Congregational
Church in Jeffersonville, the Ladies Home Dem Group and the Crescendo Club.
Her son, grandchildren and, as years passed, great-grandchildren always
provided Ivaline a desire and spark with their love, giving her purpose and
fulfillment in her life. She is survived by her son, Lawrence and his wife,
Dorothy, of Morrisville; three grandchildren, Anne Demars and her husband,
Dan, Matthew and his wife, Wendy, and Patrick; five great-grandchildren,
Ryan, Carter, Christian, Joshua and Erica; two sisters, Dorothy Parsons of
Colchester and Oraetta Caswell and her husband, Chester, of Grand Isle; a
sister-in-law, Frieda Bliss Sabens of Colchester; and several nieces and
nephews. Ivaline was also predeceased by a sister, Madeline Martin. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in the Second
Congregational Church in Jeffersonville with interment following in
Belvidere Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that

....show SOUTH BURLINGTON — Gloria Mae (Roulet) Moody,
77, passed away peacefully May 11, 2001, at her home at The Pines in the
presence of her loving family. She was born in Burlington on Feb. 20, 1924,
the daughter of William Repetto and Frances Kmetz Repetto, who predeceased
her. She graduated from Burlington High School, Class of 1944. She had been
employed by S.S. Kresge, W.T. Grant Co., J.C. Penney and more recently
retired from F.W. Woolworth Co. Her greatest interest was her family. She
also enjoyed bowling, golfing, working in her garden, trips and playing
cards with her dear friends, Jackie Barnes, Jean Dastalto, and her cousin,
Bonnie Maietta. She was a former Cub Scout mother and taught Sunday school
for 10 years at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she was a faithful member
for many years. She had presently been attending St. Andrew’s Episcopal
Church in Colchester. Gloria is survived by her daughter, Karen Tompkins and
her husband Jim, and children Candace and Tyler, of Colchester; three sons,
Gary Moody and his daughter, Samantha Ann, of South Burlington, Kevin Moody
and his wife, Kathy, and children Nicola, Trevor and Jarvis, of Swanton, and
Daren Moody and children Shane, Whitney and Miranda; two
great-granddaughters, Natalia and Katherine; a sister, Genevieve Cowlishaw
of North Carolina; cousins Bonnie Maietta, who was Gloria’s “”Angel on
Earth,” Donald Hier and his wife, Rosemary, of Barre, and Florence Lafferty
of Massachusetts; nieces and nephews; and a lifelong special friend, Elaine
Wright of Colchester. She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Repetto and
her former husband, Frank C. Moody. The family wishes to thank the very
special Hospice and VNA “”Angels,” Pat Weiner, Noreen Riley and Susan Ryan,
and neighbors Nan and Henry Angolano for the loving care Gloria received.

....show BURLINGTON — Ruth Elizabeth Robistow, 98, of
Burlington died in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center on May 11,
2001. She was born in Utica, N.Y., on Jan. 6, 1903, the daughter of Edward
and Cynthia (Bowen) Brown. Ruth graduated from St. Albans High School in
1920. She worked as an operator for New England Telephone Co. for 35 years
until her retirement. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of
America, St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, and a longtime member of the choir
there. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Ruth was the widow of Kenneth F.
Robistow, who predeceased her Feb. 1, 1986. She is survived by her three
sisters-in-law, Ila W. Brown of St. Johnsbury, Laurie Larocque and her
husband, Paul, of Swanton, and Madeline Pijanowski and her husband, John, of
Burlington; a brother-in-law, Peter Robistow and his wife, Phyllis, of
Colchester; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three
sisters, Kathryn Brown, Alice Whitham and Helen Brown; and four brothers,
James, Edward, Neil and John Brown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, in St. Mark Roman Catholic Church with
interment to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.

unexpectedly Friday, May 11, 2001. She was born on October 26, 1964, in
Norwalk, Conn., and had worked as an LPN in the Norwalk Hospital. She and
her husband, Roy, recently moved to this area to be closer to family. In
addition to her husband Roy T. Ruggiero of South Burlington, she leaves her
children, Christina Velloso and Charles Velloso, both of Florida, John Ryan
Metcalf, Jr. and Morissa Metcalf, both of Connecticut; two grandchildren;
her mother, Therese Kelly; and her aunt, Marguerite Kelley, both of
Burlington. Rose was recently predeceased by another daughter, Kimberly Ann

COLCHESTER — Doris A. Sweet, 81, died Friday, May 11, 2001, in Fletcher Allen
Health Care in Burlington. She was born June 19, 1919, in Lincoln, the
daughter of Dayton D. and Abbie (Gove) Dwire. Doris was predeceased by her
husband, Melvin F. Sweet, in 1988. She is survived by her daughter-in-law,
Diana Sweet of Winooski; two granddaughters, Darlenea and her husband, David
Hollis, of Kansas, and Tina Sweet and her companion, Chris Sibley, both of
Burlington; two great-granddaughters, Marisa and Taylor Hollis; three sisters,
Gladys Hunt of Bristol, Velma Thompson of Bristol, and Norma Miner of
Hinesburg; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was also predeceased by a
son, Richard Sweet, in 1999, and a sister, Retha Cameron. Funeral services

Saturday, May 12, 2001, two weeks prior to his 90th birthday, in Burlington
Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 26, 1911, in New Haven,
the son of Cameron and Jessie (Bowen) Sprigg. He was a member of Libanus
Lodge 47, F&AM, town meeting moderator of Charlotte for 25 years and a
member of various other organizations. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera,
and two sons, Richard and Ronald. Gordon is survived by his children, Gordon
Sprigg Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Virginia, Carole Ann Scott of Burlington,
and Mary Ellen Hunter and her husband, James, of Colchester; seven
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Charlotte Congregational

LINDA B. ADAMS
....show STOWE — Linda B. Adams, 57, of Stowe passed away Sunday,
May 13, 2001, after a courageous struggle with a long illness. Linda, the
daughter of Vivian M. and Lee B. Bates, was born in Newport on Sept. 18,
1943, and spent her childhood living in Montpelier. She attended Middlebury
College, and until recently had been enrolled in a photojournalism program
at the University of Vermont. Linda was employed by the owe Reporter for 25
years, serving as associate editor at the time of her retirement in 1995.
She and the Stowe Reporter gained regional and national recognition in their
worldwide coverage of alpine ski racing. She was a skilled photographer and
journalist. Linda was a director of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association
from 1992 to 1996. She was also a member of the Eastern and United States
Ski Writers Association. Linda spent countless hours volunteering her time
at the Mount Mansfield Ski Club, including timing ski races, organizing the
annual dinner dances and producing the club newsletter. Linda was an avid
animal lover, and especially enjoyed riding and caring for her horses. She
participated in local equestrian events for many years and was a member of
the Green Mountain Hounds. Linda also enjoyed the arts, and was well known
for her creative talents, from building ”floats”for the Spruce Peak Easter
Parade, to capturing many notable athletes on film. She was a member of the
Helen Day Art Center, where she served on various committees. Linda
approached a long and difficult illness with dignity and hope. Her husband
and children appreciate the many family members, friends, and caregivers who
supported her. The family would especially like to thank the wonderful
people at Fletcher Allen Health Care for the excellent care given to Linda.
Linda enriched many lives. Her children and grandchildren will remember her
independent spirit and her delight in the company of her family. She will
also be remembered for her kindness and generosity, always there for those
who needed her. Linda is survived by her husband Stephen P. Adams of Stowe;
her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Douglas Weiss of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.;
her son, Krister Adams of Stowe; and granddaughters Kelsey and Bettina
Weiss, of Ho-Ho-Kus; brothers-in-law James Adams and his wife, Barbara, of
Essex Junction; William Adams and his wife, Janet, of Riverside, Conn.;
several nieces and nephews; her husband’s aunt, Laura Adams of Montpelier;

....show BURLINGTON — Helen L. Anair, 100, passed away peacefully
May 13, 2001. She was born in Newport, April 5, 2001 to George Anair and
Carrie Dube Anair. She graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1918, studied the
law, and in 1927, she was admitted to the bar and became the tenth female
lawyer in Vermont. Helen practiced law and was a successful business woman
during an era in which women struggled for equality. Her greatest interests
were tracking and recording her family genealogy and memoirs, traveling,
gardening and challenging her friends and family to games of Scrabble. She
continued to be independent, feisty and vibrant throughout all of her 100
years. Helen is survived by her sister, Evelyn Anair McCanna, and her
sister-in-law, Ellen Thompson Anair, many nieces, nephews, grandneices,
grandnephews, and a great-grandneice and great-grandnephew. She was
predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mruiel and Thurb Hayward,
and Velma and Roderick Riley; her brother, Lawrence Anair; and
brother-in-law, George McCanna. Helen’s family would like to thank the staff
and residents of the Converse Home for their loving care and friendship over
the six years Helen resided in their presence. In addition, they are
thankful for the care she received from the many doctors and nurses on Baird
4 who looked after her the last week of her life. Prayers and committal will

ALICE PEARLE CAIN BORDEAUX
....show BURLINGTON — Alice Bordeaux, 96, peacefully
went to heaven on Mother’s Day, May, 13, 2001, from Burlington Health and
Rehabilitation Center. She was born on a Clinton, Maine farm April 10, 1905,
to Annie Burgess Cain and Eugene Cain. She later attended the Good
Will-Hinckley School, where her mother worked following Eugene’s death.
Alice had three brothers and two sisters, Everett, Leslie, Ralph, Dorothy
and Bertha; all of whom predeceased her. Auburn-haired Alice graduated from
Wheelock College in Boston in 1928, later teaching in the Albany, N.Y. area.
She married C. George Bordeaux, an engineer, and together they moved Hoosick
Falls, N.Y. George owned a valve manufacturing company while Alice taught
kindergarten for 25 years. She was extremely active in all school and church
activities during that time. After her husband’s death in 1965, she moved to
Alexandria, Va., before coming to Vermont in 1981. Independent and capable
to the end, Alice was a wonderful and kind person, full of life and the love
of good judgement, character, design, books and crossword puzzles. Her
spirit was authentic. How she loved and appreciated plants and beauty.
Devoted to her family, she is survived by two daughters, Anne B. Douglass of
Charlottesville, Va., and Joyce Bordeaux of Burlington; two grandchildren,
Gail Douglass of Washington, D.C. and Jeff Douglass of Phoenix, Ariz.; two
nieces; two nephews; their families; and a number of friends who will all
miss her. Alice will never be forgotten. Arrangements are being made by
Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held later
this summer before her ashes are buried with her family under her favorite

....show BURLINGTON — Evangeline M. Gabbeitt, 87, died Sunday, May 13,
2001, in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in
Montpelier on June 21, 1913, the daughter of Ernest and Katherine (O’Connor)
Galaise. Evangeline married John J. Gabbeitt in St. Stephen Church; he
predeceased her in 1967. For 10 years, she was the staffing coordinator at
DeGoesbriand Hospital. She was a member of St. Stephen parish in Winooski.
Surviving her are two daughters and their spouses, Katherine Sue and John
Martin of Bakersfield and Martha Lee and Ernest Courcy of Irving, Texas;
eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Lorraine
Gabbeitt of Winooski; a sister-in-law who was her devoted caregiver and
friend, Beulah Gabbeitt of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. Her
son, John Thomas Gabbeitt, predeceased her in 1980. A Mass of Christina
Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Stephen Catholic
Church in Winooski. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in

MARION B. GUILD
....show WATERBURY CENTER — Marion B. Guild, 88, a longtime
resident of the Waterbury area, passed away in Central Vermont Medical Center
in Berlin, Sunday, May, 13, 2001. Born in North Duxbury on May 5, 1913, she
was the daughter of the late Donald and Ida Jane (Morse) Barney. On Aug. 19,
1941, she married Frank W. Guild Jr. in Waterbury. Marion attended schools in
Duxbury and Waterbury. Following her graduation from Waterbury High School,
she continued her education at the DeGoesbriand School of Nursing in
Burlington, graduating as a registered nurse. Throughout her career, she
worked in hospitals in Burlington, Plattsburgh, N.Y., Bridgeport, Conn. and
Miami Beach, Florida; and as a private duty nurse in Waterbury. She and her
husband made their home on Guild Hill in Waterbury Center, where they operated
a dairy and poultry farm for many years. They have made their home in
Montpelier since June, 1997. Marion’s memberships included the Wesley United
Methodist Church in Waterbury; the Queen Esther Chapter 7 OES, where she
served as a member and past Worthy Matron; the Waterbury Grange 237; and the
Vermont State Grange. Marion is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years,
Frank W. Guild Jr. of Montpelier; a daughter, Nancy Murphy and her husband,
Timothy, of Middlesex; three grandsons, Brian (Toby) Garland, Robert (Bo)
Garland, and Todd Murphy, all of Middlesex; a sister, Charlotte Clifton of
Montpelier; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a
brother, Friend “Bud” Barney, and a sister Ella Wrisley. Memorial services
will be held in the Wesley United Methodist Church, Waterbury, on Wednesday,

PETER JOSEPH SHADROUI
....show SALISBURY N.C — Mr. Peter Shadroui, 79, of Salisbury,
N.C. passed away Sunday, May 13, 2001, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center,
Wilmington, N.C. Born in Barre, January 23, 1922, he was the son of Marianne (Jaffre)
and Joseph G. Shadroui. Peter attended Barre public schools, the University of
Illinois and Boston College. He was a 2nd Lieutennant and Bombadier in the Air
Force during World War II. He became an attorney and practiced law in Vermont.
Later in life, he became a buyer with Sangers Department Store. He also owned
the Plamor Lanes Bowling Center in Statesville, N.C. for over 30 years. Peter
was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a lifelong member of the
Statesville Moose Lodge and past president of the Bowling Proprietors
Association of the Carolinas. He also served on the Salisbury Planning Board.
Peter is survived by his wife of 50 years ”Stella”; two sons, Michael Joseph
Shadroui of Salisbury, and George Phillip Shadroui of Memphis, Tenn.; two
daughters, Joanne Mary Shadroui of Wilmington, N.C. and Marie Ann Robbins of
Salisbury; two brothers, Paul Joseph Shadroui and Richard Michael Shadroui,
both of Barre; and a sister, Celia Shediac of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; and five

....show COLCHESTER — Roland A. Brosseau, 60, of Colchester
died Monday, May 14, 2001, in his home, surrounded by his daughters and
grandchildren following a long illness. He was born in Burlington on Feb. 8,
1941, the son of the late George and Loretta (Forcier) Brosseau. He served
in the U. S. Army and was a retired firefighter from the Burlington Fire
Department. He was a past member of St. John’s Club and Knights of Columbus.

YONKERS, N.Y./MALLETS BAY — E. James Flood, 87, a lifetime resident of
Yonkers, N.Y., and summer resident of Colchester died May 14, 2001 at home.
Mr. Flood became licensed funeral home director on July 15, 1935. He was
founder, partner and president of Pelham Funeral Home, Inc., Pelham, N.Y.
founded in 1946. He was born March 10, 1914 in Yonkers to Annie Higgins and
Frank C. Flood. Mr. Flood graduated from Saunders Technical High School,
Yonkers, in 1931 and New York School of Embalming and Restorative Art, New
York City in 1935. On March 10, 1940, he married Bethany Deane Flood at
Church of the Nativity, Bronx, N.Y. Mr. Flood was a founding member of the
Westchester Country Funeral Directors Association. He was past president of
the Yonkers Lion’s Club in 1941-1942; past president of the Pelham Board of
Trade, now the Pelham Chamber of Commerce in 1948 – 1949; past president of
the Family Associated University of Vermont in 1961-1962; a member of the
U.S.O. Committee from 1942-1945; a former member of the Wykagyl Country
Club, New Rochelle, NY; a member of the Hastings-Rising Star Lodge F& AM and
St. Mark’s Church, Yonkers. Last November he was honored with a testimonial
banquet in celebration of his 65 years as a licensed undertaker and embalmer
in New York State. Mr. Flood was the longest licensed undertaker and
embalmer in New York state and he was a legend in his profession. Mr. Flood
loved his family, his profession and enjoyed playing cards, especially gin,
with his club members. Mr. Flood will be remembered for his compassion,
understanding and his kind, generous ways. He will be surely missed by his
family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Bethany Deane Flood; his
daughter, Karen and her husband, Ernest Rochefort; his son, Richard W. and
his wife, Teena Flood, of Charlotte; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Flood; his
sister, Ruth Flood; six grandchildren, Megan, Deane and Randy Flood,
Elizabeth Rochefort, Deane Jr. and Sean Flood; and a great-grandson, James
Michael Dowe Flood. He was predeceased by his son, Deane Flood; two sisters,
Thelma Clark and Dorothy Hunter; two brothers, Chester and Warren Flood; and

of Milton died peacefully Monday, May 14, 2001 at Verdelle Village Extended
Care Facility in St. Albans. Clara Belle was born December 11, 1908 in
Colchester, the daughter of Dean and Lena B. Gonyeau Johnson. She was
employed for many years as a lockmaker for the Corbin Lock Company in New
Britian, Conn. A longtime area resident, Clara was an auxiliary member of
the American Legion Post 57 in Milton. An avid Bingo player, she also loved
to cook, crochet and sew. She was well known for the many handicrafts she
made for people. Known affectionately by many as Aunt Clara, she will be
greatly missed by those who knew her. She is survived by her brother, Howard
C. Johnson of Milton, and his wife Elaine of Verdelle Village, St. Albans;
her sister, Dorothy Scribner also of Verdelle Village; several nieces and
nephews, Sally, Steven, Dean, and Todd White of Milton; Betty and David
Blatt of Jericho; Mary, Paul and Michael Perry of St. Albans; Nancy and Mike
Dion of Milton; Shirley Bosley, Ebenezer and Carol Johnson and Sandy Gratton
all of Milton; Linda Hamelin of Tucson, Ariz., Judy and Gary Trivento of

....show BURLINGTON — Angie C. Poquette, 89, passed away
peacefully in Fletcher Allen Health Care on Monday, May 14, 2001. She was
born in North Hero on October 29, 1911, the daughter of John and Mary
(Dubuque) Poquette. She received her education in the North Hero School. She
married Homer E. Poquette on July 4, 1933 at St. Rose of Lima Church in
South Hero. After moving to Burlington, she worked for Bell Aircraft, The
Woolen Mill, and then spent 22 years at General Electric before retiring in
1972 to care for her husband. In 1983, she and homer celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary and enjoyed three more years before he passed on in
January, 1987. Though small in size, she had the heart of a lion and battled
kidney failure for the past six years on dialysis. She was an inspiration to
all who knew her with her ever present smile. She will be greatly missed by
all whose lives she touched. She is survived by one son, Bruce, with whom
she lived and who was her caregiver for the last six years of her life; two
sisters, Bea Santor of Rutland, and Eileen Averill of Massachusetts; one
sister-in-law, Gertrude Poquette of Connecticut; and many loving nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Eva Dodds and
Mildred Poquette A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday,

During his spare time, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes. He will
be remembered as a good husband and father who will be missed dearly by his
wife of nearly 40 yeaers, Donna (Rooney) Whalon of Burlington; seven children,
Donald of Burlington, Tracy and his wife, Dawn, of Winooski, Steven and his
wife, Theresa of Florida, Kimberly and her long time companion, Randy Gordon,
of Burlington, Veronica and her husband, Derek Couture, of Alburg, Nancy and
her companion, Paul Benedict, of South Alburg, and Amy and her companion,
Justin Clodgeo, of Burlington; 20 grandchildren; his great-grandson; his

Martin. She was a 1951 graduate of Richford High School. Much of her adult
life was spent in the Baltimore Md. area. She is survived by her daughter
and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bill Rhodes, of Denton; a sister and brother in
law, Evelyn and Wendell Jewett, of Richford; and nieces and nephews. Besides
her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank Allen; her son,

BURLINGTON — Thomas Roy Atherton, 67, a lifelong resident of
Burlington, died in his home Tuesday, May 15, 2001, after a long illness. He
was born in Burlington on April 5, 1934, the son of the late Roy and Mildred
(Mongeon) Atherton. He was a graduate of Burlington High School, Class of
’53, where he excelled in basketball and football. He served in the United
States Army and played football for the Army in Germany. Thomas retired from
the Burlington Water Department after 33 years of employment. He also built
several houses in the Burlington area. He is survived by a daughter, Kim
Atherton and her companion, Raymond Dufresne, of Georgia; a son, Craig T.
Atherton of Burlington; three grandchildren, Katie Callahan, James Atherton
and Jennifer Atherton; a brother, James Atherton of Alburg; a sister, Janet

Leonard was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. He served in
the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by two sisters, Leonie
Vallancourt of Williston, and Florence Berthiaume of Burlington; a special
goddaughter, Jeannette Brassard of Vergennes; and several nieces and
nephews. Leonard was predeceased by three sisters, Yvonne Gibeault,

ROGER R. BRASSARD
....show BURLINGTON — Roger R. Brassard, Command Sergeant Major, U.S.
Army, retired, passed into the arms of his Lord on May 17, 2001. He was born
August 26, 1916, in Stanbridge, Quebec, the fifth child of Octave and Albina
Brassard. The family moved to Vermont, and Roger attended Nazareth and
Cathedral schools. He entered the Army in November 1941 and retired in 1970.
He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. Roger’s home was
in California, but he traveled back to Vermont every year to be with his
family and to play golf. He is survived by his sisters, Lena Sullivan, Cecile
Andros, and Beatrice Walker; and by many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his brother, Lucien, and his sister, Theresa. There will be no
visiting hours. A graveside service with full military honors will be held in
St. Joseph Cemetery on Archibald Street at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7.

....show BURLINGTON — Sister Adelyn Denis (Sr. Mary Camillus)
of the Sisters of Mercy died at Mount Saint Mary Convent, Burlington on May
24, 2001. She was born in Montpelier on September 11, 1910, the daughter of
Martial and Mary (Lefebvre) Denis. Sister Adelyn received her education in
Montpelier at St. Michael’s Grammar School and graduated from St. Michael’s
High School. She received her BA degree from Trinity College and MA degree
from Michigan State University. She entered the Sisters of Mercy of Vermont on
September 8, 1929 and made her profession of vows on March 30, 1932. She
taught many years in the schools staffed by the Sisters of Mercy, in
Montpelier, in Barre, and in Burlington at Cathedral Grammar Schooland at
Pomeroy, and at Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington. After
retirement from teaching she worked with the blind for several years. Her
hobby and gift was stamp collecting. She is also remembered for the delicious
caramels that she made each year for the bazaar. In 1992 Sister celebrated her
60th Jubliee as a Sister of Mercy. Until her death Sr. Adelyn lived at Mt. St.
Mary. She is survived by her Sisters in religion, the Sisters of Mercy of
Vermont; her niece, Dorothy Aitchison and her husband James; her niece-in-law
Jean Langevin; six grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by five
brothers and one nephew. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in the
Sacred Heart Chapel at Mt. St. Mary Convent, 100 Mansfield Avenue, Burlington
on Monday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Mt. St. Mary

VERONA M. FITZGERALD
....show MORRISVILLE — Verona M. Fitzgerald, 82, died Friday
evening, May 25, 2001 in Barton, Vt. Born in Brownington, on October 19, 1918,
Verona was the daughter of the late Dean A. and Lila (Herrman) Tripp. She
attended school in Morrisville, graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, and
returned to Morrisville and completed additional post graduate studies at
Peoples Academy. On March 25, 1937, she married Reginald G. Parker in
Morrisville, where they owned and operated a farm for several years. Later in
her life, Verona became the wife of James L. Fitzgerald, Sr. whom she wed on
August 30, 1957. He predeceased her in August of 1985. Verona was employed as
a bookkeeper for several years in the Morrisville and Stowe area. She was
active in many local organizations in which she served in many capacities. You
could always count on Verona to head up many ‘Chicken Pie Suppers’. Beside her
community involvement, Verona was a great gardner and loved music. She served
as the organist of the Puffer United Methodist Church for 30 years. During her
early school years, she and May (Sanders) Mitchell became the first two female
members of the Morrisville Military Band. She is survived by two daughters and
their spouses, Brenda and Romaine Godin of Brooksville, Fla. and So. Hero, and
Marcella and Joseph Lanphear of Morrisville; two sons, and their wives, David
D. Parker and Beverly of Morrisville and Alan ‘Dumpy’ Parker and Carole of
Spring Hill, Fla. and Hyde Park; two stepsons, Micheal J. Fitzgerald of Elmore
and James L. Fitzgerald, Jr. of Morrisville; nine grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eleanor ‘Nan’ Tripp and a niece, Deanna

....show MIDDLEBURY — Robert Edward Lucia, age 78, passed away
at his home on Friday, May 25, 2001, peacefully in his sleep. He was born
January 15, 1923 in Lincoln, the son of Edward and Hazel (Mason) Lucia. Robert
served honorably in the US Army from 1944 to 1945, during which time he fought
in World War II and served as a Prisoner of War, earning the Bronze Star, Good
Conduct Medal and the Prisoner of War Medal. He was a member of the Elks, the
VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. In civilian life, before retirement,
Robert worked as an engineer of automatic machines for the Cone-Blanchard
Machine Company in Windsor. He enjoyed spending time on Lake Champlain, at his
camp in Orwell, teaching his grandchildren to drive a boat. He loved to bowl
and was an avid cribbage player, skunking many of those whom dared to play
him. He was dearly loved and will be missed by his family. He leaves his wife
of 61 years, Jane (McIntyre) of Middlebury; three children and their spouses,
Linda and Stanley Waryas of Charlestown, N.H.; Nancy and Reginald Bishop of
East Middlebury; and Thomas and Julie Lucia of Spofford, N.H.; one brother and
one sister, John Lucia and Jane Whipple, both of Middlebury; five
grandchildren, David Waryas of West Roxbury, Mass., William Waryas of Norwich,

....show RICHMOND — Leopold ‘Paul’ Noel, 73, of Richmond, died
Friday, May 25, 2001, at the home of Gina and Ken Nelson who cared for him
during the last months of his illness. Born on December 23, 1927, in Richmond,
he was the son of Gedeon and Leonille (Dutil) Noel. He attended Richmond
schools. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Richmond.
Paul owned and operated a dairy farm on the Dugway Road in Richnd with his
father for many years. He retired from the Burlington Free Press after more
than 25 years of employment and leaves an extended Free Press family. He
enjoyed his job and the people he worked with. Paul was a kind and loving man
and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted UVM hockey fan and
also enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his two brothers and their wives;
Albert and Gladys Noel of Waterbury, Clement and Ruth Noel of Underhill, his
seven sisters, Blanche Boucher and her husband Irving of Burlington, Bertha
Lacroix of Burlington, Bebianne Cox, of Atlanta, Ga., Marguerite Cartier and
husband Robert of Dallas, Penn., Cecile Laporte and her husband Philip of
Williston, Mary Jane Geiger of Charlottesville, Va., and Claire Beauchemin and
her husband Robert of So. Burlington. He also leaves his sister-in-law
Rajeanne Noel of Ga., and 42 nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his
parents and two brothers, Sylvio and Claude Noel. Calling hours will be held
from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot St., Richmond on
Tuesday, May 29, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our
Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Richmond on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 10:00
a.m. Burial will be at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery where he will be
laid to rest with his parents and brother Claude. Memorial contributions may

....show JEFFERSONVILLE — Christopher Nuzzo, 88, of
Jeffersonville passed away peacefully with his son at his side on Friday, May
25, 2001. Chris was born Aug. 21, 1912, in Naples, Italy, the second of nine
children, and immigrated to Boston with his family that same year. He attended
Boston public schools, Lincoln Technical Institute and Northeastern
University, where he graduated in 1955 with a degree in mechanical
engineering. His youth was marked by great involvement in the Catholic church,
C.Y.O. baseball teams, and his incessant desire to financially help his family
through the Depression. His role as a generous leader within his family is one
that he never relinquished. During the war, he was a sheet metal worker and
shipbuilder at the Boston Naval Shipyard. After the war, he retained his
employment at the shipyard while pursuing his higher education and retired
from his career as a naval mechanical engineer in 1974. Chris and his wife,
Marie Faldetta, were married June 18, 1946, and built their home in
Winchester, Mass., shortly thereafter. During their 40 years in Winchester,
Chris was very active in Little League baseball, an active parishioner of St.
Mary’s parish, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and frequently
participated in the activities of the Winchester Seniors Center. He enjoyed a
good game of cribbage, an occasional dinner with friends, a good baseball
game, holidays with his family, summers on Cape Cod, but most of all he
enjoyed dancing with his beloved wife, Marie. He will always be remembered by
his son as a man with strong working hands, a keen mind and boundless amounts
of time for his son. He was a loving husband and devoted companion to his
wife, Marie. Unable to care for his wife’s failing health due to his own
failing health, they moved to Vermont to live with their son in 1991. During
his 10 years in Vermont, he was a member a St. Mary Church in Cambridge, he
participated in the Out and About Program, and was an ever-present figure on
his son’s farm. Chris is survived by his sister, Mary Remni of Boston; his
son, Robbie; two granddaughters, Julia Marie and Isobel of Jeffersonville. He
was predeceased by his wife, Marie, in 1993. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated in Winchester, Mass. Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the burial
following. Arrangements are under the direction of des Groseillers Funeral
Home, Johnson, Vt. The Nuzzo family would like to extend their heartfelt
appreciation to the Greensboro Nursing Home for the excellent care Chris
received during his last one and a half years of life

....show RICHFORD — Elaine M. Johnson, 60, died Saturday
morning May 26, 2001 at the Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans. She
was born August 2, 1940 in Richford the daughter of Harold Johnson and the
late Winona Johnson. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at
11:00 at the Spears Funeral Home on 140 Main St. in Richford. Interment will
follow in the Richford Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday
from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Richford. For those who

DAVID EMERY KELLEY
....show ESSEX JUNCTION — David Emery Kelley, 69, passed away on May
26, 2001 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of
the late Levi and Ruth Emery Kelley. A 1949 graduate of Montpelier High
School, Dave went on to be a graduate of the University of Vermont in 1953
where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Fraternity. After graduation, David was
employed by Republic Steel Corporation for many years. In 1968, his family
moved back to Vermont and he spent 25 years on the staff at the University of
Vermont. Upon retiring in 1992, David and his wife spent the winter months in
Spring Hill, Florida where they were members of the Timber Pines Golf and
Tennis Clubs. Dave will be missed for his great sense of humor, his passion
for tennis and golf, along with his playful storytelling with his
grandchildren. He leaves his wife of 47 years, Martha (Marty) Marvin; his two
daughters and their husbands Kristen Kelley and Donald DiLoreto of Gladwyne,
Penn. and Kathy Kelley and Robert Corson of Exeter, N.H.; four grandchildren;
his two surviving brothers Lee of St. Albans, and Jerome of Westmore; and his
father-in-law, Lawrence ‘Doc’ Marvin of Shelburne. He was predeceased by his
brother Frank and his sister Nancy DosSantos. There will be a Celebration of
Life later in June with his niece, the Reverend Karen Hagy, officiating. A
private burial will be in the family plot, Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington.
