....show , 24, died in a car accident March 18, 2000. He was born May 1975, the son of Joseph and Lucinda (Blanchard) Johnston. He graduated from Mount Mansfield Union High School in 1993. The same year, he received a diploma in carpentry at Essex Vocational. After school, he was employed by Sweeney & Belisle, where he made good friends and enjoyed his job, and he helped out on the family dairy farm. Jason joined the U.S. Marines in 1994 -1999. He spent four years as a weapons specialist including a Mediterranean tour, where he was involved in the former Yugoslavia conflict. Recently being discharged from service, he was working in Charlotte, N.C., at Ogden Aviational Services. He was happy there and really enjoyed life and the friendships he made throughout North and South Carolina. He was very energetic, happy and usually had a smile. We will miss that smile, along with the humor, and his mom will miss reading his poetry. He liked hunting and outdoor sports of all types, recently taking an interest in rodeo. Jay will be missed greatly by everyone’s life that he touched. He was blessed with many friends and family. He is survived by his mother, Lucinda Davis and his stepfather, Dean C. Davis; his father, Joseph Johnston, of Swanton; his brother, Anthony Johnston and his wife, Vicki and their son, Jason, of Columbus, Ga; an aunt, Mindy Carlson of Burlington; his grandmother, Elaine Blanchard of Lyndonville; his paternal grandmother, Vera Johnston of Clifton Heights, Pa.; two uncles, William Johnston of Hinesville, Ga., and John Johnston of Upper Darby, Pa.; two aunts, Linda Hardik of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Debra Lynn Grisaf of Upper Darby, Pa; several cousins in Pennsylvania; and his best friends, Chad Pitkin of Rock Hill, S.C., Chris Beloin and Kirk Roberge of Jericho, April Mitchell of Texas and Jason Barube of Colorado. We were all blessed to have him in our lives. Services are to be held in the Church of the Rock in St. Albans. (Route 104, 1/4 mile south of Collins Perly Sports Center). RICHMOND, Vt./ELLENVILLE, N.Y. - Mildred (Chase) Marvin

She was born on Aug. 25, 1902, in Brainardsville, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Katherine (Gaines) Chase, but lived most of her life in Ellenville. She moved to Vermont in the mid-80s to be near her daughter and family. She is survived by her four daughters and their families, Carol Adams of Richmond, Mildred Schinman of Seattle, Katherine Manzano of San Francisco, and Linda Hastie of Boston. A memorial service will be held in the summer in Brainardsville, N.Y.
ISLAND POND - Mr. Brendan Gilbert Paradis
....show , 78, of Paradis Mountain Road in Island Pond died peacefully after a long illness, with his family at his side, March 18, 2000, at his home. He was born July 30, 1921, in Island Pond, a son of Herve and Alice (White) Paradis. Mr. Paradis graduated from St. Mary’s Convent in Island Pond and later served a short tour in the U.S. Navy. In June 1945, he married the former Ruby Ovitt, who predeceased him in 1980; and Jan. 6, 1991, he married Alice Mary Laitres, who survives him. Brendan was a conductor engineer for the Canadian National Railroad for 41 years. He was a member of the United Train Workers Union. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing in his younger years, walking in the woods and, most of all, the railroad. He is survived by his wife, Alice Paradis of Island Pond; his children, Brenda Farrington and her husband, Carl, of Hinesburg, Gilbert Paradis and his friend, Gail, of Lyndonville, Michael Paradis and his wife, Gloria, of Newport, and Jacinta Jones and her husband, Bill, of Derby Line; his stepchildren, Mary Anne Field of Maryland, Barbara Jean Worth of Williston, Catherine Irvine of Cropwell, Ala., Susan Perron of Wells, Maine, and Stanley James Field of Jeffersonville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Edmond Paradis of Columbia, S.C.; and a sister, Dorann Goulet of Hartford, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Paradis; and a sister, Geraldine Heath. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. LYNDONVILLE - Gladys Kay Baker
....show , 57, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, of complications resulting from an automobile accident in 1992, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Steamboat Springs, Colo., on Nov. 11, 1942, the daughter of Thomas and Alta (Litton) King. Kay grew up in Burlington and was active in music as a soloist in many area churches and the recipient of several musical honors. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in political science in 1988. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Burlington. She is survived by a daughter, Wendy Hovey of Victory; a son, Christopher Baker of Norfolk, Va.; two grandchildren; her parents, Thomas and Alta King of Williston; one sister, Carol Fitzgerald and her husband, Robert, of Colchester; and her former husband, Sidney Baker of Norfolk,Va. A private family service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. ....show , 64, left to be with our Savior, March 19, 2000, following a long illness. He was born in Burlington, on Oct. 6, 1935, the son of the late George and Celesta Bessette. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard from 1951 until 1970, where he earned numerous citations. He worked for South Burlington Fire Department for 23 years (Captain), Essex Junction Fire Department (volunteer for ten years), Essex Fire Department (volunteer for ten years, Assistant Chief) Fred joined the Knights of Columbus in 1961, and was a 3rd and 4th Degree member. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. Fred is survived by his wife, Beverly and their children and grandchildren, Michael and Tracie Bessette and their son David of Essex Center; Brenda and Ray Astillero and their children Martina and Ramon of Jericho; Fred Jr. and Lucie Bessette and their children Justin, Hillary and Victoria of Westford; Sylvia and Bob Toscanno of Toms River, N.J., Joanne and Mac Peters and their daughter Danielle of Burlington, Joseph and Tricia Bessette and their children Megan and Macie Jo of South Hero; and great-granddaughter, Tiana Valyou of Jericho. Dick lived in Charlotte the last 56 years and was an antique dealer since 1963. He worked on moving the Ticonderoga boat from Lake Champlain to its resting place at The Shelburne Museum. Dick worked as a carpenter and in construction for many years. He also enjoyed weekly card games with friends, rides, auctions and yard sales. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Geneva (Marble); his three children, sons, Dale Counter and friend Lucia Larabee, David and friend Ruthie Gokey, and daughter, Marie Counter; grandchildren, Deborah Counter and friend John Goodspeed, Melissa and husband Brian Fortin, Kirk and Amy Counter, Derrick and Kevin Counter; three great-grandsons, Jonathanand Joshua Fortin and Kevin Counter; brother, Robert and wife Margerette Counter; sisters, Eleanor Counter, Dorothy Counter and Beatrice Counter; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Beatrice Marble and their children; many cousins; and friends. He was born in East Hartford, Conn., on Jan. 7, 1939, the son of the late Alfred and Corrine (Neales) Froehlich. He married Theresa Choiniere in 1956 in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Alfred was a fire fighter with the Burlington Fire Department until his retirement as lieutenant in 1988 after complications from open heart surgery. He was a member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 916 for eight years and a member of Holy Cross parish in Colchester. He is survived by his wife, Terrie of Colchester; two sons, Alfred Jr. of Colorado, and Scott of Colchester; five daughters, Hope and her husband, Paul Costella, of St. Albans, Bonnie and her husband, Irving, of Williston, Candy Froehlich of Vergennes, Debbie and Kelly Froehlich, both of Milton; one brother, Donald Froehlich and his wife, Joy, of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Esther Choiniere of Highgate; brothers-in-law Gerald Choiniere and his wife, Debbie, of Highgate, Richard Sweeney and his wife, Jeannette, of Swanton; and several nieces and nephews. ESSEX JUNCTION/SHELBURNE - Marion Miller Parker Marvin
....show passed away on March 19, 2000, in Wake Robin in Shelburne. She was born on Sept. 2, 1905, in Williston, the youngest daughter of Ruel and Laura Miller Parker. She was educated at Muddy Brook Rural School, graduating from Burlington High School in 1923. Marion received her degree in education from the University of Vermont in 1927. While at UVM, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and was one of the first women to earn the varsity "V" in athletics, having been an active member of basketball, soccer, hockey and rifle teams. After graduation, she taught at Stowe High School. In 1928, she married Lawrence "Doc" Marvin of Essex Junction, where she resided until moving the Wake Robin in July 1994. During Marion’s early lifetime she was active in the First congregational Church in Essex Junction, having served as president of the Ladies Social Union. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie Troop Leader, member of the Essex Junction Women’s Club and held offices in the Vermont Federation of Women’s Clubs, member of the Red Cross, Pi Phi Mother’s Club at UVM and was a member of the Mary Fletcher Hospital Auxiliary. Marion also was a charter member of the Vermont Chapter of Daughters of the Colonial Wars and of the Chittenden County Historical Society, and a member of the Vermont Historical Society. She volunteered at the Brownell Library in Essex Junction for many years. Marion was the family genealogist, keeping meticulous records of the family generations. Her oral history of growing up in Williston was very special to her family and friends. She was an active participant in helping run the two family farms in Essex Junction. Marion is survived by her husband, Doc; two daughters, Martha "Marty" Kelley and her husband, David, of Essex Junction and Spring Hill, Fla., and Lois of Mount Dora, Fla., and her husband, Gordon Garvey; a niece, Cynthia Fischer of South Burlington and her husband, Edmund; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters, Laura Meredith (Mrs. L.D.) and Dorothy Parker Alling (Mrs. Frank). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in Marion’s memory to the Dorothy Parker Alling Memorial Library of Williston or the Brownell Library of Essex Junction. HYDE PARK - Arnold P. Parot
....show , 88, a lifelong resident of Hyde Park passed away Sunday evening, March 19, 2000, in Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville. He was born March 10, 1912, in Colchester, the son of the late Fred and May Lillian (LaMott) Parot. As a young man, he hauled gravel for the town of Hyde Park and also drove his own milk route until the late 1940s. It was in 1945 that his extra hard work would earn his his lifelong dream of purchasing and owing his own farm. He also married the former Effie Lila Jones on July 14, 1945. He owned and operated his dairy farm in Hyde Park for many years and always stayed located within walking distance of his parents farm where he was first introduced the the farming life he loved so much. He was predeceased by his wife, Effie, in August of 1979. He is survived by, a son, John Parot and his wife, Jeanette, of Morrisville; three sisters, Sylvia Nolan and her husband, Donald, of Underhill, Grace LaBelle of North Hyde Park, Arlene Allen and Reginald Tatro of Waterville; one granddaughter, Effie Mary Parot of Morrisville; many nieces and nephews; and a very special loving and caring friend and companion, Irene Culver of Hyde Park. ALBURG - Mrs. Rose R. Poissant
....show , 92, a resident of this community for most of her lifetime died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Rose was born in Embrum, Ontario, Canada, Nov.16, 1907, the daughter of the late Philias and Amanda (Clavelle) Rochon. On Oct. 29, 1928, she married J. Dolphis Poissant who predeceased her, Sept. 27, 1988. Rose was active in her community as a longtime member of Saint Amadeus Parish and an honorary member of the Saint Amadeus Council of Catholic Women. She also belonged to the Island in The Sun Senior Citizens Inc., and was a Friend of the Alburg Library. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing Bingo as well as many happy hours playing cards with her friends at Pine Manor. She will always be remembered for her delicious apple pies. Rose was an inspiration to all her family with her positive and optimistic outlook on life. Rose’s family extends to five generations. Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Calvin Mumley of Alburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Betty Poissant of Alburg and Paul and Ann Poissant of Easton, Md.; two sisters, Alice Brow of Alburg and Florence Metivier of Burlington; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Gladys Poissant of Burlington; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Roland and Ralph Rochon; and two sisters, Lucy Brow and Yvonne Faubert; and a great-grandson, Eric Tatro. ....show , 51, a lifelong resident of the Burlington area, passed away unexpectedly as a result of cardiac disease, in Colchester. He was born in Burlington on May 31, 1948, the son of Earl and Pauline (Proulx) Vierling. He was a graduate of Burlington High School, Class of 1966. He then attended Franklin Institute of Boston, Mass., graduating in 1971. He was a former member of the Vermont Army National Guard. Bill had been employed as an engineer with Hazelett-Strip Casting Corp. for over 25 years until his early retirement due to his health. He was a member of the North Avenue Alliance Church in Burlington. Bill was an avid sports enthusiast including skiing, softballl, hunting and fishing, auto racing and, most of all, sailing. He obtained his U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license in June 1992. He was devoted to his fily, and his greatest joy was to be among family and close friends. He is survived by one son, Chad William Vierling; and his mother, Debbie Miller-Vierling of Winooski; his father, Earl E. Vierling and his wife, Delores, of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; one sister, Patricia Vierling-Senderoff and her husband, Steve; one niece, Sharon Miner Chanpimol and her husband, Suchai; one nephew, Shawn Louis Miner and his wife, Julie and their families, all of the Wilmington, Del., area. WASHINGTON D.C. - Senior Judge Lawrence A. Wright
....show of the United States Tax Court died peacefully from complications of cancer on March 19, 2000, in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. Judge Wright was born on Dec. 25, 1927, in Eustus, Maine. He entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1945; Judge Wright retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1978 as a colonel in the Judge Advocate Branch. His military awards included the Legion of Merit. Judge Wright earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1953, a law degree from Georgetown University in 1956, and a masters in law in taxation degree from Boston University Law School in 1962. From 1957 to 1969, he was senior trial counsel for the IRS in Boston. He served as Tax Commissioner for the State of Vermont from 1969 through 1971. During his administration the Vermont sales tax was enacted, and he was responsible for its implementation. He joined the law firm of Gravel, Shea & Wright, Ltd., where he practiced law until his 1984 appointment to the Tax Court. During his fourteen years in Vermont, he served The Boy Scout Council of Vermont and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He enjoyed his sailboat on Lake Champlain with his family and friends. President Reagan appointed Judge Wright to the American Battle Monuments Committee in 1981, which he served until his appointment to the United States Tax Court. He took the oath of office to the U.S. Tax Court on Oct. 30, 1984, and assumed senior status on Nov. 1, 1996. Judge Wright is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Avis F. Leahy; his brother, Linwood F. Wright of New Sharon, Maine; his five sons, Michael of Jericho, Vt., David of Annapolis, Md., James of Montpelier, France, Stephen of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Douglas of San Francisco, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Benjamin, Cameron, Wendy, and Callie. Memorial services were held at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home Inc. in Annapolis, Md., on March 23, 2000. HOLLY HILL, Fla. - Mrs. Marjorie H. Folinas
....show , 95, formerly of 1237 Daytona Avenue, Holly Hill, Florida, died peacefully at Ormond Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach, Florida, on Monday evening, March 20, 2000. She was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on Nov. 7, 1904, the daughter of John R. L. and Sarah L. (Echols) Williams. She received her education in Carlsbad and on June 30, 1925, she was married to Achilles C. Folinas. In 1926, they moved to Montpelier, Vermont, where they made their home and raised their family. Marjorie Folinas and her husband owned and operated Pine’s Restaurant in Montpelier, Vermont, from 1935 through the 1950s. In 1955, they moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, and, in 1969, retired to Holly Hill , Florida. In 1975, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary, and had six more years together before her husband, Achilles C., died in 1981. Mrs. Folinas celebrated her 90th birthday in 1994 at her home in Holly Hill surrounded by family and friends. In August 1995, she became a resident of Ormond Beach Healthcare Center. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach. During her later years she was faithfully ministered to at home, and later in the nursing home, by the pastor and members of the parish. Marjorie H. Folinas is survived by her daughter, Sister Helen Folinas, of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Regional Community of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont; her son, George A. Folinas and his wife, Kathleen, of South Daytona; one granddaughter, Marjorie H. (Folinas) Carlton and her husband Robert, of Port Orange; one grandson, George W. Folinas and his wife, Gail, of Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey; and great-grandchildren, Renee and Bobby Carlton, and Theodore and Geordie Folinas. She was involved with the Burlington Garden Club and the Trinity College Alumni Association. She had been a resident of Jupiter, Fla., for five years, coming from 48 years in Williston, Vt. She is survived by her husband, Earl B. He was born in Hudson, N.Y. on Sept. 23, 1922, son of the late Theodore and Anna (Hawryluk) Rakochy. He married Anita Joan "MaryAnn" Palm on June 28, 1969, in Burlington. Nick graduated from Fanwood School for the Deaf in White Plains, N.Y. He worked 20 years for McCalls Refrigeration in Hudson until the company moved to the midwest. He and his wife moved to Burlington in 1975; he worked an additional 14 years for Digital Corp. until he retired. Nick was known by many as a warm and kind man. He was always walking his faithful companion, Jack. He spent many hours reading historical books on the Revolutionary War period. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Anita of Burlington; a daughter, Villa Rakochy and her husband, Joel Waitt of Burlington; a son, Theodore of Shelburne; a sister, Mary Tackach of Upper Saddle River, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Cook of Essex Junction, and Laura E. Parker of Irvine, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Francis H. She was the youngest daughter of Edwin and Ella (Meikle) Ransom. She was educated in the Jericho schools and also graduated from the University of Vermont in 1942. Olive worked for the Vermont Conference-United Church of Christ for 14 years. In 1970, she received her master’s degree in library science from SUNY-Albany. In 1970, she became a very dedicated assistant librarian at the New York State Library-Albany. She retired in 1983 and returned to the Burlington area. Olive was an avid reader, historian, storyteller, and chocolate lover. She also loved to travel and got great enjoyment from swimming. Olive is survived by her nieces, Margaret Ransom and Mildred Bearor of St. Albans; nephews Robert and Nancy Ransom of Essex Center, and Richard and Dale of Williston; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents; sister Mary; and brothers Hugh, Gordon, Donald and Ronald. She was also predeceased by her nephew, Alan and his wife; and Olive’s very good friend, Marion. BALTIMORE, Md. - Lynette Mock Anderson
....show , a social worker, died suddenly March 21, 2000, from a brain hemorrhage. Born in 1933, she grew up in Baltimore, Md., graduated from Wellesley College and completed her MSW at Smith College. In 1959, Lynette married the Rev. Wallace Anderson and continued to do social work in the various communities where Mr. Anderson was pastor for 37 years. A woman of great energy and strong social convictions, she worked with families of hospital patients, with foster children and young people at the Baird Center and with inner city teenagers and Navy Submarine Corps families. After retirement, Lynette and her husband moved to Baltimore where she quickly immersed herself in the political, cultural and community life of the city. At her death, she was active in civic improvement organizations, education programs, the local garden club and the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church. Lynette was an outspoken champion of public transportation and an avid writer of letters to newspapers, corporate executives and city, state, and federal representatives. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Peter, of Chenaux, Switzerland; a brother; two sisters, Gillian Brent and Peggy Obrecht; much-loved in-laws; many nieces and nephews and their children. Her older son, David, died in 1992. Lynette’s zest for life, commitment to people and causes will be remembered and cherished by those who knew her. The hundreds of spring bulbs she planted in the gardens she made and loved over the years will long be appreciated by those who did not have that honor. ....show , 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin. He was born in Montgomery, on Nov. 22, 1908, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron and Geneva "Deuso" Brunton. Ernest grew up in Montgomery and at the age of 14 he started work at the "Atlas Plywood" veneer mill in Montgomery and in 1929, moved to Waterbury to work for the Waterbury Veneer Mill. Ernest married Edith Louise Touchette on Sept. 21, 1931, in Waterbury. In May of 1944, they moved to Stowe Hollow where they purchased and operated a 180 acre farm known as the "Grand View Farm. In 1952, they started to take in skiers and summer guests and operated their farm as a bed and breakfast until Ernest’s retirement in 1973. After his retirement Ernest and Edith moved to Waterbury Center where he was known to be a tireless groundskeeper and handyman. Ernest is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edith Brunton; his sister-in-law, Rossana Brunton of Montgomery; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his five brothers; and four sisters. Visiting hours will be held at the Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe on Thursday, March 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. A High Mass will be held at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Stowe on Friday, March 24, at 11 a.m. An interment will take place at a later date in the spring at the Riverbank Cemetery in Stowe. ....show , 40, quietly left this life March 21, 2000, at his home on Lake Road. Tom and his twin brother were born Dec. 10, 1959, in Port Jefferson, N.Y. Tom is the son of Charles Kelly of New Mexico and Betty Jane Maynard of Connecticut; and stepson of Willis Maynard of Connecticut. When the family moved to Voluntown, Conn., Tom attended Killingly Vocational High School, studying animal husbandry. Tom was very active in the New London County 4-H Sheep Club and the Future Farmers of America. He was awarded the FFA National Bronze Medal, named State FFA Farmer and served as chapter president. During this time, Tom maintained a flock of Hampshire sheep that won many local, state and regional awards. While still in high school, he was selected to judge the sheep and goat show at the state fair, making him the youngest person ever selected for this honor. Tom graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1981 with letters of commendation from the Dean for his outstanding work. After college, Tom became a professional shepherd. His talents brought him to Shelburne, where he managed the breeding program for a large Suffolk sheep farm. This breeding program produced several national champions as well as numerous state and regional champions under Tom’s direction. In the mid-1990s, Tom joined forces with a friend, Dan Connor of Colchester, to create Elite Suffolks at Lambsquarter Farm. In a very short time, Elite Suffolks were winning championships and premier breeder awards throughout the United States. Tom is survived by his partner in life, Tyler Atwood; his twin brother, Charles R. Kelly; sisters Susie and Heather, all of Tennessee; brother Shawn of Maine; sisters Kim and Kelly of Connecticut; Grandma Kelly, Aunt Sharon and Uncle Richard of New York, Aunt Jan of Connecticut, Uncle John of California and Uncle Alan of Maine; plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition, Tom is survived by very special friends Ruth Blanchette, Fernand Crete and Dan Connor. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held in the First Congregational Church, South Winooski Avenue, Burlington, on Saturday, March 25, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. There are no visiting hours. She worked as a secretary until her marriage to Charles F. Bower Sr. in June 1924. After her marriage, she was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and her piano. An active church member most of her life, she played for services, taught Sunday school and was active in the Ladies Missionary Society. She was a member of the local canteen in Valley Cottage, N.Y., during World War II. Dorothea is survived by her daughter, Mary L. Bower of Jericho; her son, Charles F. Bower Jr. and his wife, Kathryn, of Litchfield, Conn.; a grandson, James D. Bower, also of Litchfield; a granddaughter, Joanne R. Murphy and her husband, Mark J. Murphy; and a great-grandson, Benjamin M. Murphy, all of Bantam, Conn. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bower was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in June 1978; and by her brothers, Ernst and Hermann. GRANDE ISLE - Forman George "Chub" Skelton
....show , 85, a resident of Grande Isle for the past eight years, died in Fletcher Allen Health Care in the early hours of March 22, 2000. Ferman was born on April 1, 1914, in New York City, the son of William and Edith (Badgely) Skelton. He attended Catawba College in North Carolina and received his bachelors degree from MontClair State Teacher’s College in New Jersey. He enjoyed sports in school and after graduation played minor league baseball and semipro football in New York, where he was employed by the New York Times. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a training officer during World War II. He also had his private pilot’s license. On August 5, 1942, in Coconut Grove, Fla., he married Adeline Kohn from Montgomery, Ala. His various assignments gave he and his wife the opportunity to spend time in various parts of the country. After retiring as a captain he became a business entrepreneur and loved to "invent" things. He and his family moved to Stowe in the early 1950s where they owned and operated a ski lodge and riding camp for many years. He became a well-known horseman and instructor. He and Maurice Laferriere started Boots’N Board Ski Shop, which is still in existence in a different location on the Mountain Road. In 1973, he moved out state and held various positions in the sales field. In 1992, he moved back to Vermont to be closer to his family. He enjoyed gardening and fishing and was an avid woodworker, most recently making violins and dulcimers. Being the sports enthusiast that he was, he enjoyed spending time with Patrick, age 7, and Nicholas, age 5, two of his grandchildren, following their participation in soccer, hockey and baseball and had begun to teach them the basics of golf. He is survived by his ex-wife Adeline Skelton of Waterbury Center, and their four children, Les and her husband, Walt Levering, of Waterbury Center, Will and his wife, Mary, of Burlington, Jeff of California and Betty and her husband, Tom O’Connell, Kim Levering, Greg, Allyson and Andrew Skelton and Patrick and Nicholas Gilbert; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Brendan O’Connell. He will be greatly missed by those whose hearts were touched by him. Private services will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, tell someone you love how much they mean to you today.

....show , 82, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by his family. Jim was born March 3, 1918, the son of Ernest and Sarah (Buckley) Pignona, in Morristown, N.J. He attended Georgia Technical Institute and the University of Vermont, where he studied engineering, after which he went to work for the Pratt & Whitney Company in Connecticut. He returned to Vermont and married Marjorie Bell. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. When he returned, he worked for Abner Bell in the lumber business for a time and then was employed at Fonda Container Company. In the early ’50s, he became a partner in A.L. Barkyoumb Co., from which he retired after many years. He went on to become the city manager for the city of St. Albans. He was active in St. Albans city politics for years and served as an alderman and two terms as mayor. He was a life member of the Owl Club and a member of the American Legion. Jim enjoyed his years at "camp" and will always be remembered by many who summered at "The Pines" as "Uncle Jimmie." He had an interest in flying and flew his own plane. Jim was an active and hands-on person and was known for being able to get things done. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; and her children, Michael Hemingway and his wife, Diane, Leonard Hemingway, and Ronald Hemingway, all of Knoxville, Tenn., and Carla Walton and her husband, David, of Swanton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; his two sons and a daughter-in-law, James B. and Chris Pignona of Koloa, Hawaii, and Georgia Shore and Jeffrey B. Pignona of Fairfield; two grandchildren, Heather and her husband, Brian Bessette, of Highgate, and Jeffrey R. ....show , 76, formerly of Waitsfield, Vt., died on Friday, March 24, 2000, following a long illness, at Belvoir Woods Health Center at Fort Belvoir, Va. Born on Sept. 7, 1923, in Strasbourg, France, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Marie (Parent) Chavane. As an ambulance driver for the French Red Cross, she served her country during World War II, earning the Croix de Guerre. On Dec. 21, 1946, she married U.S. Army Captain Robert J. Barickman in Paris. After 20 years of army life, and while her husband served in Vietnam, Terry and her four children came to Vermont in 1965, living in Fayston and later in Waitsfield. Here she enjoyed skiing, tennis, and gardening; and she loved to entertain family and friends, planning family reunions in Vermont and elsewhere. She enjoyed traveling and returned to France often. For many years she volunteered at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont (now Fletcher Allen) and was a member of the Valley Catholic Community. She will be remembered for her love life and people even as she fought declining health. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, LTC (Ret) R.J. Barickman in 1995; and by a brother, Vincent Chavane of Nice, France, in 1998. She is survived by four children; Barbara Ann Barickman of Santa Fe, N.M., and her fiance, John Kinsolving, Mary Alice Clark of Moretown, Vt., and her husband, Edward Clark, John Chavane Barickman of Boulder, Colo.; and James Barickman of Burlington; by two brothers, Henri and Remy Chavane; a sister, Marie Alice Ollier, all in France; two grandchildren, Israel Maynard of New York City, N.Y., and Esther Maynard of Eugene, Ore.; and by their father, Donald R. She was born in Newport on June 17, 1969, the daughter of Robert and Helen (Fontaine) Beauregard. She was a graduate of Essex Junction High School. She was a volunteer with Champlain Vocational Services, working at many local businesses including the Fanny Allen Thrift Store and the American Diabetes Association. She was a member of the Performing Arts at St. Michael’s College, the Racquet’s Edge, and St. Pius X Church and participated for many years in Special Olympics. She especially enjoyed motorcycle riding with her father, traveling 125,000 miles throughout North America and Mexico with him. She loved listening to music, dancing and spending time at the family camps. There were no strangers to Mary-Anne, only friends she had yet to meet. Mary-Anne’s spirit, love and zest for life are forever engraved in our hearts. She is survived by her parents, Robert and Helen Beauregard of Essex Center; four brothers, Carl and Linda Beauregard and their children, Christy, Scott, Amy, Ashley and Tyler, of Essex Junction; Michael and Diane Beauregard and their children, Tanya, Mark, Lisa, Andrew, and Matthew, of Concord, N.H.; John and Debbie Beauregard and their children, Justin and Danielle, of Falmouth, Maine; and Peter and Veronica Beauregard and their children, Chelsea and Eric, of Williston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary-Anne’s memory to Champlain Vocational Services, Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester, Vt. 05446. WINOOSKI - Gladys "Sheila" McLeod French
....show , 81, died Friday, March 24, 2000, following a long illness, at her home in Winooski. She was born April 27, 1918, in Australia, the daughter of the late Christopher Norman and Gladys May (King) McLeod. She was married to Alexander S. French in February 1945 in Ipswich-Queensland, Australia. Sheila came to the United States in 1946, living for a short time in Cleveland, Ohio, and Brandon, then moved to Winooski, where she had lived ever since. Sheila was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 80 of Brandon and a past member of the Brandon Congregational Church. She served in the W.A.A.A.F., a division of the Royal Australian Air Force, as a wireless telegraphicist during World War II (1942-1945). It was during this time that she met her husband. During her tour in the Air Force, she acquired 137 Australian, English and American combat pilots’ signatures, which included ace pilots, while they were serving in the Pacific. This original book of signatures is in the private collection of the Australian War Museum in Canberra, Australia. Sheila served as a member of the Fanny Allen Hospital Auxiliary and as a volunteer of the hospital for over 3,000 hours. Her smiling face was seen many times in the gift shop, where she prepared 937 silk flower arrangements which were sold by the hospital. Her goal was to make a total of 1,000 arrangements. She made up for this goal not being met by doing all those extra things for others throughout her life. In 1964, Sheila became a buyer for the housewares and gift department of Hilson Home Center and retired after 14 years. In 1964, she was presented with the Citizens Appreciation Award by the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce for her devotion to the area youth in the Chamber’s Competitive Swimming Program. She leaves her beloved children, Carol Ann and her husband, Vernon Bean, of Gainesville, Fla., Norman French and his fiancee, Pamela Hatin-Eudy, of Winooski, Gary French of Shelburne; her ex-daughter-in-law, Kathy Mattison; her grandchildren, Gregory and his wife, Kerry Bean, Matthew Bean, Jessica, and Ingrid French; one sister, Marjorie Hurst; two sisters-in-law, Beryl McLeod of Australia, and Mildred and her husband, Dr. William Birchard, of Topsfield, Mass.; and several relatives and friends in Australia. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander French, in 1972; and two brothers, Hector and Norman McLeod of Australia. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 27, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the LaVigne Funeral Home in Winooski with interment to follow at 1:30 p.m. in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602. or to the Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446. Visiting hours will be Sunday, March 26, 2000, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the LaVigne Funeral Home Inc., 132 Main St., Winooski.
