DANVILLE - Barbara Jean (Whitney) Lewis
....show , 71, of Danville, died at peace March 12, 2000, in the Fletcher Allen Health Center in Burlington. Her kind heart stopped beating Sunday evening while in the company of her family. Barbara was born May 19, 1928, in Randolph, the second daughter of Earl Harold and Cleora Neal (Knight) Whitney. Barb graduated from South Royalton High School in 1946. She worked briefly for CVPS before attending Lyndon Teachers College. She married a classmate, Norman Luke Lewis of Lunenburg, June 22, 1952. They spent the next 16 summers at the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, where Barbara clerked at the Marshfield Gift Shop. Barb’s 30 years of teaching in Vermont included the graded school in Proctorsville, the one-room Peaseville Grade School in Andover, Chester Elementary School, and primary classes in the Newport City Elementary Schools from 1969 to 1988. Student productions were highlights of her teaching career. As an active member of the Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, she was chairman of the History Committee. In recent years she completed a history charter of members. She was pleased that the last twenty years of the Epsilon’s history was compiled and formatted for publication on her computer. Barbara was well-known for sharing her musical abilities, especially her singing voice with students, at anniversaries, weddings and choirs. She spent 37 years touring (aka Mrs. Delphine Gore) with the Gore family supporting Rep. Danny Gore’s campaign for governor. Her two final singing performances occurred with her son on Dec. 31, 1999, in the Rutland County Superior courtroom as part of that city’s First Night celebration. As a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church, Barbara organized a youth choir in Chester. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Norman; her two children, son, Timothy R. Lewis of Montpelier; daughter Cintra L. Hazen, son-in-law, Richard Ira Hazen; and granddaughter, Erica Whitney Hazen, with whom she spent many special times, all of South Hero; stepgrandsons, Robert Hazen, and Richard Hazen Jr. and his wife, Aimee, all of Grand Isle; her brother, Paul Knight Whitney and his wife, Marion, of South Royalton; nephews, Shawn Knight of Michigan, David and Scott Whitney of South Royalton; niece Paula Whitney Tortolano and her husband, Paul; and grandniece, Erin, who gave her a stuffed puppy to share her bed in the hospital. She was predeceased by her sister, M. Andrea (Whitney) Knight, in 1995; and her nephew, Bradford Knight, in 1979. Barbara’s first concern was her family and their well-being. Barbara was also a consummate and enthusiastic hostess who thoroughly enjoyed many friends. And these many friends supported her and the family during her final days. She counted her doctor of over 25 years, Christopher Terrien, as her friend along with the other medical support people. In her final hours, she was looking forward to planning a party with her Mom and Dad, as well as recently departed friends; Rachel Vincent, Elwin Griffin, and Donald Naramore. Committal arrangements are being handled by the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Donations in her memory may be made to the Vermont Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Vermont Historical Society, Lyndon State College Television Studies Department or a charity of your choice.
