BURLINGTON - Mildred A. Stoddard
....show , 88, formerly of 230 St. Paul St., died Wednesday evening, March 1, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was presently a resident of Birchwood Terrace. Mildred was born June 24, 1911, in Moretown, the daughter of Walter and Daisey E. (Bradley) Childs. Mildred was married to Hugh R. Stoddard on Nov. 21, 1931. He predeceased her on July 10, 1970. Mildred was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Her first concern was always for the well-being of others. Her favorite hobbies were reading, crafts and baking. She will always be remembered for her wonderful pastries and pies were her specialty. She often was asked to make them for various area restaurants where she was employed as hostess, namely Lums, and the Parkway Diner. At one time Mildred had been employed at Ho-Hum Motel as a manager and receptionist. She also had a great love of animals, especially her cat, Misty. She is survived by her son, Stephen Stoddard and his significant other, Brenda Couture of South Burlington, her two daughters, Evelyn and her husband, John Barbeau, of Alburg, and Eleanor Stoddard of South Burlington, who was her closest companion and devoted caregiver; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; Diane D’Arcangelo of South Burlington, who was like a daughter to Mildred; and close family friend, Paulette Tipper. She was predeceased by her daughter, Virginia; and her brothers, Raymond and Leon Childs. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union St., Burlington. Visiting hours are today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will take place in South Duxbury Cemetery in May. ST. ALBANS - Lillian C. "Toon" Arsenault
....show , 73, died early Thursday, March 2, 2000, in the Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born March 3, 1926, in Tupper Lake, New York, the daughter of Louis and Claudia (Paquette) LaRocque. Toon was married to Alfred J. "Pee Wee" Arsenault, who died on Oct. 11, 1993. Toon could be remembered best as the morning person at the Beverage Mart on Lake Street for 24 years and prior to that was employed by Softlight in Swanton and Rainbow Cleaners. Survivors include her three sons, Ralph and his wife, Karen Arsenault, of Atlanta, Ga., Allan Arsenault of Danville, and Ross Arsenault of St. Albans; a daughter, Linda and her husband, Gordon McDonald, of Swanton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and two special coffee friends, Bruce and David. Besides her husband, Toon was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Pelno. At Toon’s request services will be private and at the convenience of the family. ....show , 69, a former longtime Milton resident and more recently of St. Albans, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home. Evelyn was a courageous and loving woman. She was a mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend. Mom, your little angel appeared and there was no fear. A new door is opened and though we will miss you, we will know you are here in love, truth and joy. Born in Milton on June 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Frederic and Jessie (Washburn) Wood. She graduated from Milton High School in 1949 and was employed at Fanny Allen Hospital for many years, then retired from Fletcher Allen Health Care in 1998. Later, she served as a hospice worker. Her memberships include the United Church of Milton, Milton Grange No. 522, American Legion Post 57, Ladies Auxiliary; Chittenden Chapter 59 OES, and Women of the Moose, St. Albans Chapter 321. Evelyn was predeceased by two husbands, Fred Bullock, in 1970; and Donald Pidgeon, in 1980; and a daughter, Bonnie Rose Bush, in 1995. She leaves two daughters, Coralee A. Cavoretto and her husband, John, of Burlington, and Amy L. Bullock of Highgate and her fiance, Cliff Poirier, of St. Albans; her brother, Herbert L. Wood of St. Albans; and several stepchildren; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 10, 2000, at 7 p.m. in the United Church of Milton, Main Street, Milton. She will be interred next to her first love and husband, Fred Bullock, in the Milton Village Cemetery at the convenience of the family. PHOENIX, Ariz. - Mary Elizabeth "Betts" Stahl
....show , 76, died March 2, 2000, after two years of stoically enduring severe osteoporosis. She had been living near her daughter in Phoenix, Ariz. Betts passed away peacefully after wonderful visits from each of her children, William M. "Skin" Stahl of Portland, Maine, Katherine A. Stahl of Washington, D.C., Sarah Stahl Jaffe of Bridgehampton, N.Y., and Elizabeth Stahl Parkinson of Phoenix, Ariz. Betts’ fifth child, Jonathan B. Stahl, died of AIDS in 1995. Born on Sept. 21, 1923, in the living room of her parents’ home in Norwich, Vt., she attended Hanover High School and worked at the Mary Hitchcock Medical Center. Betts was married to William M. Stahl from 1944 to 1967. Betts was a devoted mother, raising lively children. She lived for extended periods in Danbury, Conn., and Burlington, Vt. Betts worked for more than 20 years as the receptionist at Timberlane Dental in South Burlington, Vt. and later as a receptionist for Burlington College, also in Vermont. Betts had a great sense of humor and loved New England barns, teddy bears, reading, big band and jazz music, homemade waffles with Vermont maple syrup, public radio and television, social gatherings and her lifelong friends. She was a warm, caring, supportive, hugging, mom, grandma, mother-in-law, aunt and friend. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her and have had the pleasure to know her. ....show , 94, a lifelong resident of Fairfield, passed away Friday, March 3, 2000, in the North Country Hospital in Newport following a brief illness. He was born in Elmore on Feb. 4, 1906, son of the late Frank E. and Clara J. (Tatro) Draper. His wife, Viola V. (Mitchell) Draper died March 6, 1991. Fred retired from dairy farming in 1966 and then worked at carpentry, making and repairing farm wagons and sleds for people throughout Vermont. He also loved gardening. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Draper Graves of Essex Center; five sons and their wives, Donald and Margaret Draper of Fairfield, Fred Jr. and Charlene Draper of St. Albans, Ronald and Dianne Draper of West Charleston, Gary and Veronica Draper of Enosburg Falls, and George Draper of Fairfield. He also leaves two sisters, Arlene Lapan of Fletcher and Mertel Greenwood of Franklin. Fred and his wife, Viola, raised two grandchildren, Diane Orvitt-Lamore and Virginia Montague, both of Bakersfield. He leaves 32 other grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, Viola, he was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Garrett; and four brothers, Charles, Frank, Robert and Harvey Draper. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Oren Lane will officiate. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Bradley Cemetery in Fairfield. BRISTOL - Sylvia Lettie Norton
....show , 88, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born Dec. 2, 1911, in South Bristol, the eldest daughter of Ralph and Era (Sumner) O’Bryan. She was a proud graduate of Bristol High School, Class of 1930. April 24, 1937, she married David Bostwick Norton, who predeceased her Jan. 9, 1969. Sylvia lived in Bristol her entire life, raising her family while working at different times for Van Raalte in Bristol, Porter Hospital in Middlebury, Strong Hardware in Burlington and, in her later years, at the Park Filling Station in Bristol. She was a solid citizen, recognizing her responsibilities to her community, state and country. She respected the rights of others while cherishing her own rights and independence. Through her actions, she instilled those values in those around her. Family was special to her, and she was special to her family. She is survived by her sons, James Norton and his wife, Beverly, of Danbury, Conn; and Hubert Norton and his wife, Sharon, of Essex. She leaves grandchildren Theresa Colville and Erick Norton of New Milford, Conn., Richard Norton of South Burlington, Catherine Norton, currently in Mali, West Africa, Susan Norton and Sarah Norton of Essex, and Heather Norton of Danbury, Conn. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Colville and their grandmother, Mary Bradley, all of New Milford, Conn. A sister, Lula Chamberlain; and a brother, Vern O’Bryan, also survive her along with her Aunt Lottie Follansbee. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends including Michael and Deborah Orvis and their family, with whom she had lived for the last couple of years. She was predeceased by five siblings, Cullen O’Bryan, Alberta Brown, Dora Fourbe, Dorthy Spooner, and Lila Chamberlain; and a grandson; James O’Bryan Norton Jr. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2000, in the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. ....show , 75, of Burlington passed away Friday, March 3, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colchester Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 610 Main St., on Saturday, March 11, 2000, where Louis served as a faithful servant. Louis was born April 5, 1924, in Greenwich, Conn., a son of Benjamin and Angelina (D’Andrea) Servidio, and was one of nine children. Louis attended Connecticut schools and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In later years, he became a master plumber, running his own plumbing businesses in New York and Vermont, and later worked for a large mechanical contractor in Colorado, where he produced cost estimates and material schedules. During the last 15 years, while semi-retired, he worked as a technician in his son’s local engineering company. During his life, Louis was a friend to all and especially loved sharing his time with children. He was a devoted father and always took less in life for himself to give more to his children. The world will be hard pressed to find a finer father, a more loving grandfather, and a truer friend than Louis. He will be remembered for his bubbly, kidding, humorous personality. Louis was married for 51 years to his loving wife, Victoria. Louis is survived by his wife; his three children, Judi M. Servidio of Boulder, Colo., Richard L. Servidio of Charlotte, and Michael J. Servidio of Milton; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his brother, James; and his sister, Dolores Abbott. HANCOCK - Barbara Bernadette Story
....show , 78, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. She was born on the family farm in Waitsfield on Jan. 19, 1922, the daughter of William and Carolyn (Bover) Graves. She was a 1939 graduate of Waitsfield High School and a 1942 graduate of Johnson Normal School in Johnson. She returned to Johnson State College to earn her degree in human services in 1981 at the age of 59. She married Lee E. Story on Dec. 24, 1942, in Hancock. Mr. Story died in 1985. Mrs. Story taught elementary education in Hancock, Waitsfield and Granville in the early 1940s. The Storys moved to Connecticut, where Barbara worked as an engineering aide for 17 years at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. They returned to Hancock in 1968. They designed and had built The Hancock House Motel on Route 125, which they owned and operated for 17 years. She was very active in civic affairs, serving as an election official, lister, and library trustee, and she was on the budget committee for many years in Hancock. She had also served on the Bicentennial Committees for America in 1976, 1981 for Hancock and 1991 for Vermont. She was a writer and poet. She was also an organ donor, having donated her eyes for research. Her memberships included the Rochester Federated Church, and she was a charter member and first president of the Howard Perry Post No. 765, V.F.W. Auxiliary. She helped establish the Quin-Town Senior Citizens Center and named it. She served on the board of directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont and was named their Person of the Year in 1981. She was a former member of the South Congregational Church in East Hartford, Conn. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Carol Story of Morrisville; three brothers, W. Bover Graves of Waits- field, Bradlee Graves of South Easton, Mass., and Ronald Graves of Fayston; a sister, Beverly Mobus of Warren; many nieces and nephews; and her adopted family, the Keith Jesso family of Hancock. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Rochester Federated Church with Pastor Beverly Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Hancock Village Cemetery at a later date. Calling hours will be Monday, March 6, 2000, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the French room at the Rochester Federated Church. ....show , 76, of 4 Dublin Ave., Nashua, N.H., died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. Mr. Poitras was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on June 7, 1923, the son of the late George H. and Corinne (Passino) Poitras. A resident of Nashua since 1977, Mr. Poitras had previously resided in Grand Isle, Vt., from 1964 to 1977, and in Springfield, Mass., from 1947 to 1964. He was the husband of Alice A. (Dowd) Poitras of Nashua with whom he would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 16, 2000. Mr. Poitras had been employed in the building construction business for a number of years. He was general superintendent and field manager for the Leo Spear Construction Company of Burlington, Vt. Mr. Poitras began his working career as a carpenter with his father, George H. Poitras, in Plattsburgh, N.Y. For many years, he was a ember and officer of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 96 of Springfield, Mass., and served as the recording secretary for the Carpenters District Council of Western Massachusetts. Educated in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Mr. Poitras attended Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburgh. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II as a seaman first class. His tours of duty included the American Campaign, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, and the Philippine Liberation. He was a communicant of the Parish of the Resurrection in Nashua. Besides his wife, survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Clayton P. Jr. and Gail I. Poitras, of Montpelier, Vt., Jeffrey D. and Angela D. Poitras of Hooksett, N.H., and James D. and Sandra C. Poitras of Litchfield, N.H.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cheryl A. Piotras of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sara Davis-Pagan and Ernest Pagan of Nashua; nine grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Poitras, Nicole and Renee Poitras, James David and Jonathan Poitras, Nathan R. Hayes, Jason P. Davis and Stephanie West; a brother and sister-in-law, George H. Jr. and Elisabeth Poitras of Plattsburg, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Poitras was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Poitras of Plattsburgh. There are no calling hours. ROCHESTER - Reuben Sibley Sherman
....show , 81, died Saturday morning, March 4, 2000, at the Johnson Care Home in Hancock. He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Rochester, the son of Reuben and Alice (Gibbs) Sherman. He attended Rochester schools and graduated from Rochester High School. Reuben served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married Jeanne Batho, May 17, 1945, in San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Sherman died in 1999. In earlier years he worked as a logger, truck driver, machinist and welder. From 1957-1971 the Sherman’s were the proprietors of Sherman’s Store in Rochester. Reuben enjoyed hunting and traveling. He and his wife visited all 50 states and all the Canadian provinces. They had wintered in Florida for the past 27 years. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Covell of Roanoke, Va.; three sons, R. Stephen Sherman of Montpelier, Gordon Sherman of Alexander City, Ala., and David Sherman of Rochester, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Johnson; and three brothers, Gerald, Reginald and Tracy Sherman. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. in the Rochester Federated Church, Rochester. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date. There are no calling hours. PALM COAST, Fla./MONTPELIER, Vt. - John J. Wackerman
....show , 80, of Palm Coast, Florida, died on March 4, 2000, following heart surgery. He and his wife recently moved to Florida after almost 50 years in Montpelier, Vt. He was born on Nov. 25, 1919, in Sea Cliff, New York, the son of William H. and Mary Juritza Wackerman. He graduated from Sea Cliff High School and attended college at Hofstra University and the University of North Carolina. In 1940 he joined the Navy and served until 1946, when he was discharged with the permanent rank of Lt. Commander, USNR. Her received his L.L.B. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1948, and he was admitted to the bar in New York and Vermont. John married Olga Schoelles of Sea Cliff in 1948, and they moved to Montpelier early the next year, where he practiced law for ten years. At the same time, he was a Municipal Court Judge for eight years, served in the Vermont state legislature for four terms, as both a representative and a senator, and was chairman of the State Water Conservation Board. In 1959 he became Commissioner of the Department of Social Welfare, a position he held for ten years. His decade with the Social Welfare Department was the work he considered the most important of his life. He finished his working career with the federal government, working for the Veterans Administration until he retired in 1982. John was an avid sailor, a founding member of the Sipping and Sailing Society, who enjoyed numerous sailing adventures over the years. He was a dedicated gardener admired for his huge tomatoes, which he gladly shared with his neighbors. He volunteered with the local Boy Scouts, Kiwanas, Community Chest, and the local blood drive. He was also an accomplished woodworker, and enjoyed his retirement refinishing furniture and woodwork for his family and many friends. He and his wife moved to Palm Coast, Fla., in September 1998. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Olga; his three daughters: Susan, of Portland,Ore., Jorie, of Seattle, Wash., and Linda, also of Seattle; as well as her husband, Mark Sherman and their two daughters, Trea and Elise Sherman. He is also survived by his nephew, Peter Tatem and his family of Red Bank, N.J. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be sent to Montpelier Food Pantry or Good Samaritan Haven in Barre. She was the daughter of Roger W. and Faith (Kenyon) Prior, and was married to Victor Diogardia, who died in 1997. After graduating from Burlington High School, Katherine got a bachelor’s degree in theater from Catholic University, followed by a master’s degree in art history from the University of Maryland. She was self-employed as a fine arts appraiser in Washington, D.C., and New York City areas and was a senior member of the American Society of Appraisers. Katherine was survived by her sister and family, Martha and Myron Calkins; and by her father, Roger Prior. A brother, Christopher, predeceased Katherine. ....show , 92, died at her home on Sunday, March 5, 2000. She was born in LaPatri, Quebec, on Sept. 18, 1907, the daughter of Eugene and Mary Louise (Boily) Bouchard. Annette and her family came to the United states when she was 12, entering in Newport and making their home in Stowe. On Sept. 6, 1926, she was married to Theophile J. Godin in Waterbury. In 1943 they moved to Hyde Park, and she had lived in her present home since 1949. Annette devoted her life to her family and home, knitting socks and mittens, sewing clothes, and being a wonderful cook. She was a communicant member of St. Teresa’s Church. Since the death of her husband in 1979, Annette had spent her years maintaining her flowers, keeping her home comfortable, and providing her love and support to her ever growing family. Annette was especially proud that four of her sons served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and that she became a U.S. citizen on May 23, 1995, at the age of 88. She is survived by six children, Richard of Hyde Park, Jeannine Manley of Hendersonville, N.C., Adelard of Springfield, Tenn., Romain of Brooksville, Fla., and South Hero, Frances Packard of Berlin, and Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Delores Inkel of Campton, N.H. and Emma Sargent of South Hadley, Mass.; 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren of which is a set of triplet girls living in Washington state that she had only seen in photos; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Annette was predeceased by a son, Jean, in 1997; a daughter, Patricia Westover, in 1995; a grandson in infancy; and a granddaughter in 1995. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Teresa’s Church, Hyde Park, with interment later this spring in St. Teresa’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the White-Fiess Funeral Home, 165 Brooklyn Street, Morrisville. GRAND ISLE - Ralph (Red) Samuel Sheldon
....show , 85, of Grand Isle, passed away March 5, 2000, in Holiday House in St. Albans. He was born in Grand Isle, Nov. 29, 1914, the son of Willard and Addie Sheldon. He graduated from Burlington High School. He worked for Latham Mobile Homes and was also a meat cutter. He received the Purple Heart in 1943 with the 43rd Division. He is survived by his sister, Betty Giroux and her husband, Francis, of Parrish, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Burial services will be held in the summer in Grand Isle. WILLISTON - Nathan Stecklare
....show , 94, of Williston passed away Sunday, March 5, 2000, in Vermont Respite House. With his loving family by his side, Nathan peacefully left this Earth to be with Claire and David forever. He was born March 3, 1906, in Montpelier, the son of Isaac and Jennie (Rosen) Stekolchik, where he spent his childhood until moving to Brooklyn N.Y. Returning to Vermont in 1933, he met and married Claire Anders Cross, his loving wife of 62 years. Nathan worked all his life in sales. He was a six-year resident of Whitney Hills in Williston, where he was a familiar figure at Hannaford and the Exxon Deli, buying lottery tickets and cigars and visiting with his favorite employees. He is survived by three brothers, Sidney, Carl and Murray of New York City; his son, Irving Stecklare and his longtime companion, Joanie Alden, of Colchester; his daughter, Sandra and her husband, Edward Longe, of Burlington; daughter Marie and her husband, Lloyd Davis, of Gainesville, Fla; daughter-in-law Janet Stecklare of Jericho; and eight grandchildren who forever changed his life, Erika Stecklare, Anna, Rebecca, Eliza and Sarah Longe, Stephanie and Jeffrey Stecklare, and Beau Benoit; several nieces and nephews; and good friend and neighbor, Bill Stringer. He was predeceased by his sister, Idelle; brother Sam; his wife, Claire, in 1995; and son David, in 1996. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2000. ....show , 85, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, March 6, 2000, in Verdelle Village E.C.F. following a long illness. She was born in Westford on March 8, 1914, the daughter of Burton A. and Amy (Gale) Stone. On Dec. 22, 1939, she married Douglas R. Best, who survives her. Last December they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Virginia graduated from Beaver College in Jenkintown, Pa., with a bachelors degree in home economics. She was employed as a receptionist for F.F. Swisler, M.D. for many years. She was an avid tennis player, a volunteer for many years at Verdelle Village E.C.F., a member of the Alter Guild at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Her family was her greatest joy. She and Doug spent many years vacationing in Florida. In addition to her husband, Virginia is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Pat Branon of Fairfield and Lynn and Steven Wing of Waterbury; a sister, Constance Stone of Essex Junction; four grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Branon-Menard and her husband, Norman, Amy Gale Branon-Sturdevant and her husband, Michael, Adam Wing and Jesse Wing. She also leaves a brother-in-law, Kermit Jacobs of St. Albans; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gale Stone and Henry Grinnell Stone; and a sister, Winona Stone. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 10, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dennis Hayward, Rector, officiating. She was born in Fletcher on Oct. 12, 1908, the daughter of the late John C. and Electa (Chates) Nolan. She married Perley Carpenter on Oct. 18, 1928, and they resided in Fletcher most of their 50 married years. Perley predeceased her on Oct.11, 1978. She was a member of the Binghamville United Methodist Church and was past treasurer of the W.S.C.S. She was a librarian in the Fletcher Library when it was located in the downstairs of the Fletcher Union Meeting House. She was also Fletcher’s first telephone operator from 1927 to 1928 operating out of the old Rice home in North Cambridge. Mollie enjoyed reading, listening to the radio and writing letters to her close friends whose friendships she held so dear. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her daughter, Becky and son-in-law Thomas Neapolitano of Fairfax; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ....show died on March 6, 2000, in Tennessee, at the home of one of her sons. On March 14, 2000, she was buried in Ft. Lauderdale, where she resided for fifty plus years. Her six children were at her bedside when she died and at the funeral. Also present were her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Evroul Germain, of Syracuse, New York. Local relatives include her aunts, Pearl Brassard of Burlington and Diane Bissonette of Essex, and cousin Audrey DeForge of Colchester, who was like a sister, as Mildred’s mother, Alvina Kathan, had given her a home after Audrey’s mother’s death. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins in the greater Burlington area. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 1, at 12:00 noon at the Catholic Center in Burlington where her cousin, Fr. Michael DeForge, will officiate. All are welcome.

Dorothea was born March 20, 1930, in Lynbrook, N.Y., the daughter of Frank and Mary (Sullivan) Fisher. She graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1947 and attended Brown Business School Feb. 19, 1948, she married Charles D. McDonough. She was a board member and past president of the Central Vermont Association for Retarded Citizens, a charter member of the board for Guardianship Trust of Vermont and a past board member of the Vermont Development Disabilities Council. Dorothea was the co-founder in 1988 of the serving group for special needs people at Bethany Church in Montpelier and was a weekly volunteer for 21 years to the Adult Developmental Disabilities Center in Barre. Dot was also the legal guardian for two mentally challenged and physically handicapped women. Dorothea was the first recipient of the Lilly Keve Award from United Way of Washington County for her outstanding volunteer service. A active member of St. Patrick Church in Moretown, Dorothea also taught religious education to children of the parish since 1983. Dorothea is survived by her husband and best friend of 62 years, Charles D. "Dave" McDonough; her children, Cheryl McDonough, Patricia Gillespie, Kathleen Sagendorf, Charles McDonough and James McDonough; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A daughter, Michelle, predeceased her in 1994. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church in Moretown at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2000. Boyea of Burke, N.Y.; his brother, Leon Boyea and his wife, Paula, of Leavenworth, Kan.; and his sister, Debra M. Demarais of Tupper Lake, N.Y. He also leaves four half brothers, Alan Boyea of Malone, N.Y., Wilfred Boyea of Burke N.Y., Donald Clark of Tupper Lake, N.Y., and Michael Clark of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. April 5, 1990, he was married to Robyn Lee Hardy in Lake Placid, N.Y. After their marriage, they moved to Tupper Lake, where they owned and operated the Hometown Cafe. Robyn predeceased him Feb. 18, 1995. The family would like to thank Bonnie, Mary, Eleanor and Wayne for their special help during Les’ illness. After its closing, Shirley became the housekeeper at St. Joseph’s Rectory, a position she held for many years. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. She will be missed by all who know her. She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Carl St. Peter of Colchester; her granddaughter, Stacey St. Peter, two brothers and two sisters and their spouses: Robert and Eleanor Penders, Elaine Penders, Joyce and Emerson Bouchard, all of Burlington, and John and Louise Penders of Milton; her very special aunt, Valeta Charron of Williston; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her special companion, Andy, her favorite cat.
