WAITSFIELD - Gerard A. Benoit
....show , 76, formerly of Waitsfield, passed away Feb 24, 2000, in New York City. Born on Jan. 24, 1924, in Quebec, he was the youngest of three children born to Alphonse and Victoria (Elie) Benoit. Early in life, Gerard showed a great disposition for academics and was sent to Ottawa to study in the Capucin Order Seminary. During World War II, when the family settled in Vermont, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army. He spent time in Hawaii loading ships, befriended his comrades from all over the country, and had kept good memories of his time in the Army. After the war, he resumed his studies, earning a B.A. degree from Tufts University, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn an M.A. from Harvard University. He had worked as a certified pension consultant for a benefits consulting firm, where he was greatly appreciated for his dedication, competence and quality of work. His coworkers liked him for his kindness, sense of humor and readiness to help. Gerard loved New York City, where he enjoyed good music and theater, but he was also in love with the great outdoors. He enjoyed maple sugaring with Joe and Sandy Caron in upstate New York, where he showed the different techniques he had learned as a child. He enjoyed walking, hiking, and picking fruits and vegetables in the summer, but most of all, gardening at his brothers home in Waitsfield. He was happy there, especially when the family at large was assembled and they discussed the genealogy of the Benoit family, looking for information about their ancestors in this country. When he was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, he faced it valiantly, using his sense of humor to compensate for the limitations imposed on his daily life, but there was nothing he could do against the cancer that took him so quickly. He will be missed, but, more important, he will be remembered with pride and tenderness. He is survived by his wife, Monique of New York City; a son, Andre Benoit and his wife, Christina, of Monroe, Conn.; and a brother, Donald Benoit of Waitsfield. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Patricks Catholic Church in Moretown on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at the Moretown Town Hall. If you are planning to attend the luncheon, please contact Donald Benoit at 496-3445. The Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury is in charge of arrangements.
