BURLINGTON - Joy she brought, joy she gave. Mother, wife, poet, artist, scholar, friend, teacher, beloved. Camilla Mason Kirby
....show was born on the summer solstice, June 24, 1949, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. A precocious reader and scholar, she loved swimming, walking barefoot through green grass, summer sun. In high school, she directed plays and edited the school newspaper. She lovingly raised her younger brother and sister, and in 1972 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington University in St. Louis and entered the honors graduate program in English at the University of Chicago. Always an artist, she perfected her culinary talents, baking fine breads, sensuous chocolate cakes and cooking veritable Thanksgiving feasts for the guests she welcomed to her home. She spent hours in public libraries savoring the dog-eared books and the company of fellow readers. She was happiest when she could walk through art museums daily, imbibing the paintings and sculptures of other times, people and places. She fell in love with art early and irrevocably, and with her family and friends she shared not only her passion for art, but her own artistic talents for drawing, for creating a colorful, comfortable, beautiful home, for dressing elegantly, for cooking sumptuous meals, for writing poetry and prose. Always active, always hard-working, always taking care of others, Camilla was a gifted social worker and elementary school teacher in Chicago. She moved to New York with her husband, David Kirby, and together they fell in love with the city. Always a walker, she delighted in the sights, sounds and smells of the city, its people and its history. She managed the Womens Bookstore in Brooklyn and was an editor and interviewer for the acclaimed New York public radio station WBAI. She was a writer a published poet who won recognition and admiration in New York literary circles. She also wrote novels for young adults the readers who most fascinated her. She read copiously, and she gave generously the many gifts of her brilliant mind, her imagination and her abundant compassion. Native to her soul was a rich love for all Gods creatures, great and small, and for the pleasures of the earth the smell of rain, the color of water, the beauty of green hills. She shared her many loves, her vast energy, her joie de vivre, her adamant, unrelenting courage, her strength of body and soul, and those of us who were lucky enough to know her felt our worlds grow larger and more luxurious in her presence. She made our senses keener, our hearts kinder, our minds more comprehensive. She protected the unprotected. She touched the untouched. She defended the undefended. She spoke on behalf of the the silenced. Always, she extended her care, love and protection to abused women and children. Through her extensive understanding of the law and the human heart, she worked countless, unpaid hours coaching their lawyers. She founded and taught a free after school drama program for third, fourth and fifth graders in Montpelier instilling confidence and creativity in her young students. Through various public school and community programs, she became a mentor, Counselor and friend to children everywhere, and as an elected school board official in Burlington, she worked tirelessly to protect the rights of unprotected children and ensure equal, compassionate treatment for all children and employees of the Burlington public schools. First and foremost, she was a mother and a wife. Camilla and David Kirby married June 6, 1975. Camillas guidance, wisdom and constant counsel were the foundation of Davids law career and the rich soil which nourished his emotional, intellectual and artistic growth. She gave him love, she gave him life, she gave him everything. Camilla gave birth to their daughter, Annie, on Aug. 6, 1979. It was, as she later and often told her daughter, the happiest day of her life. Camilla gave Annie not just the gift of life, but also the gifts of living the treasures of mind, body and soul which are daily, abundant and replenishing. Her care for her daughter, even through her own illness, was constant and complete. She blessed her daughter every way. They had 20 years together. It was not enough. Camilla died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, after six years of increasingly painful and terrible illness. Her courage, her compassion, her sense of humor her unfailing joy in the living of each day these never wavered. She never ceased to amaze us. She never ceased to take care of us. Camlla made friends easily and everywhere. She is beloved. We will miss her laughter, her wit, her elegance, her insight, her strength, her creativity. Oh, Beloved. Oh, Beloved. We will never recover from losing you. May there be libraries and art museums, children and cats, green grass and summer sun, and many friends in heaven with her. A memorial service will be held in Boston in early summer, the season she loved best.
