....show , 50, passed away at home with family and friends Friday, Feb. 11, 2000. She was born in Montpelier on Sept. 26, 1949, the daughter of Brenden and Marjorie (Stewart) OBrien. She had worked in various doctors and medical offices as a secretary/receptionist for most of her life. She leaves her children, Janet Howard of Annandale, Va., Jleigh ""Judy Howard of Hyde Park, and Jonathan Howard of Graniteville; Gizmo and Charlie, her faithful puppies; two brothers, Glenn OBrien of Colchester and Lee OBrien of South Barre; and aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. She joins her parents and her sister in heaven. RICHMOND - Dema A. Rivard
....show , 89, passed away peacefully Feb. 11, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was born in Richmond, the second daughter of Eugene P. and Mary Ellen (Moynihan) Frechette. Dema graduated from Richmond schools and the teacher-training program at the University of Vermont. She taught elementary school at Fays Corners in Richmond. She married George O. Rivard in 1941 and briefly lived in St. Johnsbury before moving to St. Albans. During World War II, her husband served in the U.S. Marines, during which time she replaced George as manager of the local Endicott-Johnson Shoe Store. Following his discharge, they briefly owned a childrens clothing store before moving to Richmond, where he was named postmaster. While in Richmond, Dema established Dedes Kindergarten, which she ran in their home for 20 years. Dema most recently lived at Brownway Residence in Richmond. She belonged to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary parish, where she taught religious educaiton for many years, and the Holy rosary Ladies Altar Society. She was a member of the Richmond Historical Society. Her husband, George; a son, Peter Michael; and her sister, Florence Buley, predeceased her. She is survived by her nephews, Philip Buley and his wife, Patricia (Pam) of Cornwall and their children, Samantha Buley and her husband Reade Roberts of Nashville, Tenn., Matthew Buley of Englewood, Fla., and Benjamin Buley, attending Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Rosary Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000. There will be no calling hours. Friends may join the family in the church hall following the service. A burial service will take place in Holy Rosary Cemetery in the spring. ESSEX - Sylvia (Banta) Weiderman
....show , 80, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a short illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 25, 1919, the daughter of Edgar G. and Mildred G. (Dosch) Banta. She was a resident of Northport, N.Y., from 1950 to 1987 and moved to Essex in 1987. Her husband of 42 years, George Weiderman III, predeceased her in October 1987. ""Soapy was a member of the Girl Scouts of America for 72 years. She was the director of Camp Wunnegan in Fort Salonga, Long Island, N.Y., and a Girl Scout troop leader for many years. She touched the lives of countless girls throughout the United States with her love of scouting. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Northport, Long Island, and was superintendent of the church school program for many years. In Vermont, she was involved with Girl Scouts and Essex Meals on wheels, having conducted leadership training for the scouts and serving on the board of Meals on Wheels. She could be frequently seen at Racquets Edge in Essex, as she was an avid swimmer. She is survived by her children, Barbara S. Crawford of Essex and Douglas P. Weiderman of East Northport, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Lori and Lesley Weiderman and Jessica, Kyle, Devon and Jenny Crawford; and countless friends. A celebration of her life will be held in the Covenant Community Church, Route 15, Essex, at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2000. COLCHESTER - Kermit A. Doenges
....show , 70, of Colchester, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Verdelle Nursing Home in St. Albans following a lengthy illness with multiple sclerosis. He was born in Burlington on Jan. 4, 1930, the son of the late Frederick and Louise (Allen) Doenges. Kermit served in the U.S. Navy and was a security guard for the U.S. government. A brother, Frederick, predeceased him. He is survived by six sisters and one brother, Jacqueline and Eugene Brownell, Marion and Warren Bistram, Shirley Cootware, Patricia Marsh, Carlene and Frank Bernardini, Donna and Richard Doenges-McDermed and Roger and Lucille Doenges. Kermit is also survived by two aunts, Clara Walker of Underhill and Eleanor Hardy of Clearwater, Fla.; and several cousins and many nieces and nephews. SHELBURNE - Dean Russell Moore
....show , 78, of Annapolis, Md., and Washington, D.C., died on Feb. 12, 2000, at his daughters home in Shelburne, comforted by the kindness, memories, and loving wishes of family and friends far and near. He enjoyed life to the fullest until recent failing health following a successful 15-year battle with prostate cancer. Dean was born in Woodstock, on Jan. 11, 1924, to Allan Russell and Doris (Goodwin) Moore. His grandfather, W.H. Moore, was the publisher and editor of the Vermont Standard. Throughout his life, Dean enjoyed tales of his Tom Sawyer-esque boyhood escapades in Woodstock and treasured the friendships made there. He never lost his boyish twinkle and sense of fun. Dean attended schools in Woodstock,Vt. and Glens Falls, N.Y. He served in World War II as a 75th Division combat infantryman, European theater of operations, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine Crossing. After the war, he attended the University of Vermont, graduating in 1949. He attended his 50th reunion last June, celebrating fond memories of his student years. After graduation, Dean began a long career in banking. He held offices in banks in several states, and before his retirement served in the Farmers Home Administration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Dean was predeceased by his beloved wife, Yvonne Etzel Anderson Moore, in September of 1998. His survivors include three children from his first marriage to the former Kay McFeeters which ended in divorce: Rebecca Moore and her husband, David Hedden, of Shelburne, D. Robert Moore and Kathy White of Sheldon, and Kathleen Moore and her husband, Michael Otto, of Cambridge, Mass. He is also survived by two stepsons, William Anderson of Purcellville, Va., and Michael Anderson of Washington, D.C. Deans grandchildren were a source of pride and joy and amusement. They rekindled memories of his own childhood and gave him hope for the future. In their own words: ""Nothing we did ever bothered him. Everything just made him chuckle. He is survived by his grandchildren: Erin Maker of Santa Barbara, Calif, Jordan Moore of Calais, Anu and Will Hedden of Shelburne, Danielle Dennis of Sheldon, and new baby, Jackson Moore-Otto of Cambridge, Mass. Deans brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Gina Moore, live in Woodstock, Vt. SUN CITY, Ariz. - Bernadette Marie Payne
....show of Sun City, Ariz., for the past 10 years, formerly of Burlington, Vt., peacefully passed away Feb. 12, 2000. She was born in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Andrew Ducharme and Lillian (Hope) Ducharme. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Paul M. Payne of Sun City, Ariz.; son Leo Andrew Kupferer of Vero Beach, Fla.; daughter Paula Payne Dillon of Albany, N.Y.; son Phillip Moore Payne of Georgia, Vt.; seven beloved grandchidlren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Paul Payne, and joins him, her parents, two sisters and a brother in eternal rest. A Mass of Christian Burial and a celebration of her joyous life was held Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Sun City, Ariz. She was born in Burlington on June 9, 1922, the daughter of the late Edward and Marie (Fortune) Duball. She was a kind and generous person who was loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed reading, playing card games, shopping, lunches out and just being with those she loved. Lorraine attended Burlington High School but especially enjoyed attending her husbands Cathedral High, Class of 1939, reunions. She was a member of VFW Post 782 Ladies Auxiliary. May 3, 1947, she married Bernard Shaloohey in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary before he died Aug. 13, 1987. She is survived by four daughters and a son, Judy and David Letourneau of Georgia, Vt., Kathy and James Hazel of Ferndale, Fla., Susan Shaloohey, Debbie and Paul Sicard, and John Shaloohey, all of Burlington; her beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Lucas and Andrea Letourneau of Georgia, Vt., Scott Hazel of Ferndale, Fla., Elizabeth and Kevin Sicard of Burlington, and Allyson Shaloohey of Moretown; one sister, Joyce and Charles Schmaldienst of Winooski; one sister-in-law, Rose Duball of Clermont, Fla.; and many other dear friends and relatives. Sr. and Blanche (Cadorette) Dennis. On Oct. 7, 1967, he was married in St. Josephs Church in Burlington to Carmela Monfreda. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served for over 40 years with the Vermont Army National Guard, retiring in 1999. He was employed at the University of Vermont and was a member of St. Marks Parish. He is survived by his wife, Carmela Dennis of Burlington; two children, Albert H. Dennis of California and Valerie Duffy of Syracuse, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Ryan Dennis and Michael Duffy; his mother, Blanche Hart of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; also several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was born in Enosburg Falls on Sept. 4, 1910, the daughter of Merritt and Harriet May (Leach) Eldred. Her mother died when she was an infant, and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Ruth and Carroll Leach, in Enosburg. June 24, 1938, she was married in the Enosburg Center Congregational Church to Charles E. Nichols, who predeceased her in 1990. She received her teaching degree from Potsdam Normal School in 1933 and taught in one-room schools until her marriage. From 1961 to 1971, she taught music at Bakersfield Elementary School. In 1982, at the age of 72, she earned her bachelors degree from Johnson State College. She was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Burlington, the Tyler Branch Grange in Enosburg and the Charlotte Grange. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Donald E. and Sue Nichols of San Jose, Calif, Mary Louise Stanley of Norfolk, Va., Ralph Levi Nichols of Ohio, Sylvia J. and Michel Allen of Essex Junction, and David C. and Diane Nichols of Charlotte; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and by a close cousin, Edna Pare. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kevin M. Nichols; and a brother, Donald Eldred. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Burlington Health and Rehabilitation for their kindness and support. HUNTINGTON - Gary Trombley
....show died Feb. 13, 2000, at home in Huntington, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born in Northfield on Jan. 24, 1942, the son of Leroy and the late Rosemond Trombley. He graduated from high school in Northfield, then joined the Navy for four years. Gary enjoyed his time working in the hospital delivery room during his Navy years. After the Navy, Gary worked at the Waterbury State Hospital for a short time before joining IBM in 1965. He retired from IBM in 1993. Gary lived life to its fullest. He always looked for the best in everyone and every situation and had an extremely positive attitude about life. His family and friends will remember him for his indomitable spirit, his fun-loving vitality, and his passion to help others. Many will remember his enthusiasm for all sports, including tennis and skiing. Gary held the deepest respect for nature and spent many enjoyable hours fishing, working in the woods, making maple syrup and observing the natural world. He had an affinity for Native Americans and their way of life. His love for music led him to be the driving force behind the formation of the rock band, ""The Runaway Dog. Gary will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Gary is survived by his cherished soul mate and wife of 28 years, Patty Beaupre; his three beloved children, Lisa and her husband, Charles Shepard, of Richmond, Wayne of Portland, Maine, and Carmen of South Burlington; his father, Leroy of Northfield; his sister and brothers; Janice and her husband, Bob Boyce, of Northfield, Richard and his partner, Monique, of Williamstown, and Larry and his wife, Susan, of Swanton; and many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his wonderful presence in their lives. BURLINGTON - Lucina Cummings Carr
....show , 86, passed away Feb. 14, 2000, in the Arbors in Shelburne. Lucina was born on Nov. 24, 1913, in East Montpelier, the daughter of Edgar A. and Jennie (Staples) Cummings. With her brothers, Luman and Solon, she was raised on a farm there on what is now known as Cummings Road. After graduation from Montpelier High School, she earned an associates degree from Lasell Junior College in Auburndale, Mass., near Boston. While there she enjoyed crew, especially racing on the Charles River. On May 1, 1937, she was married to Wendell I. Carr. For their honeymoon they traveled to the Pacific coast and back in a brand new Ford. Along the way they saw the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park and other sights. They spent most of their married life in Burlington. An active member of the First Congregational Church for many years, she also enjoyed flowers, gardening, photography and painting outdoor scenes. She loved the Lake Dunmore camp where the family spent a week each summer for 20 years. After her homemaker years, she worked for 25 years as an assistant librarian at the Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont where she made many friends. She is survived by two sons, Wendell E. Carr of South Burlington and Rodney J. Carr of Burlington; four grandchildren: Cassandra Bourgeois and husband, Bruce, of Colchester, Millicent Resi and husband, David, of St. Albans, Stephanie Carr of Vail, Colo., and MIchael Carr of Colchester; three great-grandchildren: Caleb and Michelle Bourgeois and Elizabeth Resi. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the First Congregational Church in Burlington. She married Walter James Charland in 1958. He predeceased her on May 19, 1995. ""Theresa attended St. Jude Catholic Church in Hinesburg. Her family was the center of her life and she spent a great deal of time with her grandkids doing jigsaw puzzles and playing cards. She loved working in her flower garden which always had an array of pink blooms which were her favorites. She will be sorely missed by her devoted and loving family and many friends. She is survived by her son Walter James Charland Jr. and his wife, Sheryl, of Hinesburg; three grandchildren, Stacy Lynn, Dennis James and Heather Marie Charland; her sisters, Ida Garrett of Florida, Jean Murray of Richmond, Mildred Osbourne of Essex Center, Betty Thibault of Florida; her brother, Melvin Ward Jr. of Essex Junction; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter J. Charland Sr.; their son, Dennis James Charland; and several brothers and sisters. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. On July 10, 1976, he was married in Westford to Thelma A. (White) Masure. He had worked for 25 years at Fassetts Bakery in Burlington and then he worked as a custodian and security guard for the Essex School District at Essex High School and then Flemming School in Essex Junction. He is survived by his wife, Thelma A. Daudelin of Westford; one daughter, Paula Greenburg and her companion, Dennis, of Florida; one stepson, James and his wife, Judy Masure, of Sutton; one stepdaughter, Joann and her husband, Paul LeClair, of Bolton; three grandchildren, Crystal LeClair, Paul LeClair and Alicia Gray; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Dubois of Florida, Beatrice Keefe of Massachusetts and Gertrude Racine of Burlington. Born on May 26, 1910, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of Fernando and Sarah (Colby) Ayer. She attended Manchester schools and later graduated from Keene State with a teaching degree. She married Russell G. Webster on Oct. 14, 1933, in Bradford, N.H. In 1956, the family moved to Vermont and settled for many years in East Montpelier on Murray Road. They later moved to Independence Green in Montpelier. In addition to raising four children, Olive was an art teacher in many Washington County rural schools throughout the 1960s. She also did volunteer work at Central Vermont Hospital. She enjoyed painting, traveling, reading and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink. Small Point, Maine was her home away from home. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne LaFrance of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Wendy Savoie of Wilton, N.H., and her husband, David; one son, David of Lyndonville and his wife, Pat; three grandchildren, Darren LaFrance and Kipp and Keely Savoie. She was predeceased by one son, Paul, and her husband of 60 years, Russell. A private family service will take place in Maine at a later date. BURLINGTON - John E. Shaloohey
....show , 43, of Morgan Street, Burlington, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, after suffering heart failure. He was born in Burlington on Oct. 20, 1956, the son of the late Bernard and Lorraine Shaloohey. John graduated from Burlington High School in 1974 and entered military service in September of that year. He served in active service for three years before switching to the Vermont National Guard. John worked as a cook, doing lawn care maintenance, and as an electricians assistant. Johns passion was fishing and spending time with his friends. He loved a good laugh, which we will sorely miss. Our only comfort is that he is with his beloved mother who passed away Saturday. He is survived by four sisters, Judy and David Letourneau of Georgia, Vt., Kathy and James Hazel of Ferndale, Fla., Susan Shaloohey, and Debbie and Paul Sicard, all of Burlington, nephews and nieces Matthew, Lucas and Andrea Letourneau of Georgia, Vt., Scott Hazel of Ferndale, Fla., Elizabeth and Kevin Sicard of Burlington, and Allyson Shaloohey of Moretown. John also leaves many good friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard Jr., in 1988. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 10 a.m. in St. Marks Roman Catholic Church. FLETCHER Professor Rolfe Seaton Stanley
....show , 68, of Buck Hollow Road in Fletcher VT, died Tuesday February 15, 2000 with his family by his side. Rolfe was born November 4, 1931 in Brooklyn NY, son of Katherine (Tyron) and Rolfe Benkert Stanley. He was guided in his early years by his grandparents, who oversaw his education and spirtual upbringing. He graduated from Kent school in Kent, Conn. and received full athletic scholarship to Williams College, where he discovered his love for geology, and from where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his education at Yale University, receiving first his Masters of Science, and then his Ph.D. Concurrent with his education, he worked as a geologist for Shell Oil Company, doing field mapping in Montana, and also with the National Science Foundation doing field mapping in South Western Massachusts. He was an instructor and lecturer at Yale University from 1961-1964. In 1964 he took the position of Chairman of the Geology Department at the University of Vermont, a position he held until 1978. In 1972 Rolfe received his full Professorship at the University. Rolfe continued his devotion to his love of teaching and research at the University until his retirement on December 31, 1999. He took great pride in teaching one of the ten killer courses offered at UVM. Throughout his professional career he took an active role as part of the United States Geological Survey, and was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. His contributions to the understanding of New England Geology were seminal, and include editing the bedrock geologic map of Massachusetts, developing the deformation cross-section of Vermont geology through numerous publications, and as editor of the new bedrock eologic map of Vermont, on which he was actively working at the time of his death. The best testimony of all of his contributions to geology is the success of his students as they continue the work begun under his tutelage. In his later years, in addition to continuing research and teaching, he became caregiver for his wife, who has been stricken with early onset Alzheimers disease, and, all the while grieving for the loss of his beloved wifes cognitive self, he took great pride in caring for her as she declined. Rolfe lived his life to its fullest; he took great pride in his family, friends and professional accomplishments. He was a man of great integrity; he was a true role model for all to follow. He lived by the high standards he set for himself and never faltered from his ideals. He was a teacher, mentor, friend, husband, father, grandfather, and caregiver. He will be missed greatly by all who knew hm. Rolfe is survived by his wife of forty seven years, Phyllis Raymond Stanley; his four daughters and their husbands; Linda Lee Stanley, Cynthia Anne & Wayne Holappa, Karen Jean & Richard Cruickshank , and Laurie Beth & Kyle Toof. His grandchildren; Richard Francis & David Rolfe Cruickshank, Elizabeth Stanley Mann, Connor Stanley & Adrienne Elizabeth Toof, Morgan Raymond Holappa, and many close friends, including his faithful dog Sparky. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Alzheimers Association of Vermont, in honor of his wife. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, February 24th, at the Ira Allen Chapel on the UVM campus starting at 1:00 PM. He was born May 2, 1952, in Charlotte, the son of the late Maurice and Harriet (Ryea) Weld. He was a lifelong resident of Charlotte and a member of the Eagles Club in Vergennes. He was a self-employed heavy equipment operator. He is survived by a daughter, Amber Weld; a granddaughter, Madisyn Lamonda, both of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; his girlfriend, Eve Willette of Essex Junction. SALISBURY - Charles Crissy Bridges
....show , 74, died on Feb. 16, 2000. Born March 24, 1925, he was the son of Catharine (Crissy) Bridges and Charles P. Bridges. Growing up in Dedham, Mass., he came to Shoreham in 1940 to work and live on the dairy farm of Walter and Theresa Bryant. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and saw service in the Solomon Islands and northern China where he was acting first sergeant in a headquarters squadron of the First Marine Air Wing. Following his discharge in 1946, he married Pauline S. Easton of Shoreham. Subsequent to her untimely death (cancer) in 1950, he married a sister, Lorraine E. Easton. After leaving the farm in 1951, their vocations included DHIA supervising, then editing and managing The Ayrshire Digest in Brandon. From 1962 until 1974, they lived in the Springfield, Mass., area while he was director of the livestock and youth activities at Eastern States Exposition. From 1975 to 1989, he was an agent for the Farm Family Insurance Companies returning to Vermont in 1977 and serving with distinction the Farm Bureau members in the Addison County area of the Champlain Valley. During those years he and his wife edited and managed the New England Holstein Bulletin. Among many former civic interests, he was a director of Addison County Fair and Field Days. For six years he chaired the advisory committee of the Addison County Extension Service. In retirement, for a time, he and his wife were volunteer workers at Porter Medical Center. He assisted her in preparing and supervising the refreshment canteens for the Red Cross blood drawings held periodically in Middlebury. A regular and enthusiastic blood donor himself (160 pints) he received his 20 gallon pin in 1998. For many years he was an active member of the Masonic bodies of Brandon, having started up the Trestleboard monthly newsletter for those bodies in 1954. At various times he was the presiding officer of Farmers Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. He was a skilled ritualist and for more than 30 years, he was noted for his dramatic ability in Cairo Temple of the Shrine in Rutland. While an active member of the United Church of Lincoln, he served at various times as a deacon, chairman of the personnel committee, chairman of the pastoral relations committee, and as a leader for the childrens annual vacation Bible school. He and his wife also prepared and published the monthly church newsletter. At his death, he had been a longtime trustee of Eastern States Exposition and for two years had chaired the Vermont regional board of trustees. He enjoyed camping out with his family. For many years, his vegetable gardens were admired by his Salisbury neighbors. He is survived by his wife of 49 years; his daughter, Emily Ruth Bridges of Ripton; his son, David Bridges and his fiancee, Ann Giannino of Barnard; his grandchildren, Sierra Lorraine Bridges and Samuel David Bridges; also a beloved brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Margaret Bridges of Wakefield, N.H.; John and his wife, Nancy, of Tiburon, Calif; and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Easton and Jean McEdward, both of Middlebury, and Lois Bridges of San Diego, Calif. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Lincoln. He graduated from Mount Mansfield High School and attended Vermont Technical College, where he obtained his associates degree. He was employed at IBM as a manager, where he enjoyed challenges and going to work every day. He was an avid hobbyist who enjoyed motorcycles, biking, skiing, working, outdoor sports and woodworking. Keith was a very hard worker who did his very best at anything he set his mind to. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, Jeanette Daigle and her companion, Jim Stafford, of Essex; his father, Norbert Daigle and his wife, Rita, of Essex; two brothers Russell Daigle and his wife, Louise, of Essex, and John Daigle of Phoenix, Ariz.; his friend, Julie Allen of Burlington; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. ESSEX JUNCTION - David Lloyd Doba Sr.
....show , 72, died on Feb. 16, 2000, from a heart attack. He was born on Dec. 25, 1927, in Hamburg, Pa., the son of the late Boni and Katherine Doba. David attended school in Hamburg before joining the Air Force at the age of 17. He received a World War II Victory Medal and a Good conduct Medal. His highest rank in the service was sergeant. He moved to Middleton, N.Y., and married Myrtle Agnes York on Nov. 1, 1952. They made their homes in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., while Dave worked for IBM at the Fishkill plant. In 1965 he and his family were transferred to Essex Junction and remained in their present home until their deaths. Dave worked for IBM as a lab technician for 37 years before his retirement. He was a member of North Star Masonic Lodge 12 of Richmond, Mt. Sinai Shrine, Eastern Star and Scottish Rite. He is survived by his three sons: David L. Doba Jr. of Winooski, Jeffrey I. Doba of Essex Junction, and Douglas W. Doba of Essex Junction; two daughters, Cheryl L. Sargeant and her husband, Scott A., of Granville and Terrie L. Doba of Milton; grandchildren, Danial and Lyndsay of Granville; brother-in-law, Harold Knapp of Mongaup Valley, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Adella York of Palmetto, Fla. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Myrtle (York) Doba, on April 21, 1993. SHELBURNE - Joan Crile Foster
....show , 62, of Shelburne died Feb. 16, 2000, owing to a brain tumor. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 10, 1937, the daughter of George Crile Jr., M.D. and Jane Halle Crile. She graduated from Laurel School in Cleveland in 1955 and Smith College in 1959. Following her graduation, she earned an M.A.T. from Harvard/Radcliffe in 1960. June 25, 1960, she married Roger S. Foster Jr., M.D., of Washington, D.C. The Fosters were joint owners of Halirock Kennels Reg. They bred, raised and trained Newfoundland dogs, having over 60 show and obedience champions. Joan was the Champlain Valley Union High School tennis coach from 1984 to 1989. She worked on the Shelburne Rescue Squad from 1989 to 1992 until moving to Atlanta, Ga. In Atlanta, she became a paramedic and worked on an inner city ambulance. In 1995, she was hired as a paramedic in the emergency room of Grady Memorial Hospital, where she worked until her diagnosis in June 1999. Shortly thereafter, the Fosters returned to Vermont. Joan was an enthusiastic wilderness white water canoer, running many of the toughest white water rivers in Canada with her husband. Joan is survived by her large, close family: her husband Roger S. Foster Jr., M.D., of Shelburne; their four children and their spouses; and eight grandchildren. These include Dr. Roger S. Foster III, Pamela Underhill and their children, Taylor and Madeleine of Alexandria, Va., Charles B. Foster, M.D., Ginny Brown Foster and their children, Grace and Timothy, of Silver Spring, Md., Elizabeth Crile Foster and Roger Hill and their children, Steven and Chuck of Middlebury and Halle Crile Foster Moore, M.D., and Austin Moore and their children, Helen and Alex of Cleveland, Ohio. Joan is also survived by her siblings, Ann Crile Esselstyn of Cleveland, Ohio, Susan Crile of New York, N.Y., and George Crile III of New York, N.Y. SUN CITY, Ariz./Burlington - Raymond H. Taft Sr.
....show , 71, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Burlington/South Burlington, Vt., passed away Feb. 16, 2000. Ray was born in Woonsocket, R.I., to Percy Taft and Della (Benoit) Taft on July 29, 1928. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and received a purple heart and bronze star. Later he became a salesman/delivery man and a clerk for the U.S. Post Office. Ray enjoyed bowling, all sports, all kinds of card games, and socializing with friends and family. Ray was an active member of the D.A.V., V.F.W., and American Legion, a past member of Fraternal Order of Eagles and Champlain Aerie 793, Burlington, Vt. Ray was a beloved husband, father, grand and great-grandfather. Dad was an honorable and hardworking man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Marion (Horseman) Taft; five children, Ray II, Robert, Patricia, Fred, and John Taft; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his dad, Percy Taft; mom, Della Marshall; and brother, Fred Taft. A memorial service will be held at a later date. UNDERHILL CENTER - Willard Eben Alexander, Sr.

Willard was born in Saxtons River, Feb. 12, 1907, the son of the late Florence Forgette Alexander and George Perry Alexander. After graduating from Vermont Academy and Colby College, he moved to Hartford, Conn., where he was employed by his familys Sisson Drug Company. In 1936 he married the former Ethel Janes of West Hartford, Conn. Ethel predeceased him in 1986. Willard retired from the Hartford Fire Insurance Company in 1972, at which time he and Ethel moved from West Hartford to Underhill Center where they enjoyed retirement with their children and grandchildren. From 1994 until the present, Willard made his home with his daughter, Betsy and her husband, Jim Cole, in Morristown. In 1998 they moved into the home Willard and Ethel had shared for 14 years in Underhill Center. Besides his daughter, Betsy, and her husband and their children: Wendy Jowett and her husband, Andrew, of East Hampstead, N.H., Lisa Vanderby and her husband, Kevin, of Manhattan, Mont., Susan Faunce of Mendocino, Calif., Heidi Faunce of Albion, Calif. and Wayland Cole of Blue Hill, Maine; Willard leaves his son, John Alexander and his wife, Anne, of Westmore and their children: John Alexander and his wife, eryl, and sons Zachary and Jesse of Carmel, Calif., Jennifer and her husband, Earl Whitmore, and their son Benjamin of Brownington, Stephen and his wife, Devon MacLeod, and their daughter Gaylen of Lincoln, Sarah Alexander and her sons, Rohan and Ezra, and their father, Michael Racine, of Orleans, and Eben Alexander, also of Orleans. Willard also leaves his son, Willard Alexander Jr. and his wife, Kate, of Morristown, N.J. and their children: Meghan in Washington, D.C., and Tim Baldwin in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Willard was predeceased by his great-grandson, Ian MacLeod Alexander; also by a sister, Helen Frey; and brothers Perry and Donald. He was a tireless volunteer for his church and his community. He was born in Glencoe, Ontario, on June 22, 1913, the son of Dugald and Edith Gillies. He married Ellen Johnson on June 22, 1946. He was predeceased by his wife Aug. 15, 1993. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He worked as an inspector at General Electric in Burlington. He was a member of the Masons and the Scottish Rite. WOODSTOCK - Patricia Graff McCord
....show , 75, of North Pomfret died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in Mertens House in Woodstock following a long struggle with cancer. Mrs. McCord was born in New York City on Feb. 7, 1925. Her father, Lacy Kastner, was an executive with Columbia Pictures based in Paris, France. Mrs. McCord attended the Cours Suchet in Paris until the age of 12 and then was sent to St. Pauls Girls School in London, from which she graduated. She began attending lectures at the Sorbonne, but the outbreak of war first forced her family to move to the Basque country and then in 1940 back to America. She lived in California for a year and then moved to New York City, where she attended Columbia night school. Mrs. McCord went to work for the Young and Rubicam advertising agency, eventually handling accounts for Hearst Publications, National Sugar Refining Co, American Can Co. and Royal Typewriter Co. In June 1944, she married Wesley M. Graff Jr., an executive with U.S. Rubber Co. A year later, they moved to Detroit, Mich, where she went to work for Brooke, Smith, French & Dorrance Inc., an advertising agency. A few years later, she and her husband moved back to New York and eventually to Connecticut, where she raised three children and became active in state politics. In 1964, her husband died. The following year, she married Bert McCord, a former drama editor with the New York Herald Tribune, who had retired to North Pomfret in the 1950s. Mr. McCord died in 1988, also of cancer. Mrs. McCord was a strong and vivacious woman who twice overcame cancer. She was a passionate mother and grandmother. Although she had seen a great deal of the world, she never loved any place more than Pomme Granite Farm, where she spent the last 35 years of her life. Mrs. McCord is survived by her three children, Kimberly Graff Johnson of Noank, Conn., and her husband, Edward and their daughter, Lacy; Wesley M. Graff III of Fletcher and his wife, Janet Young and their daughters, Jessica and Maura, and Christopher L. Graff of Montpelier and his wife, Nancy and their children, Garrett and Lindsay. She is also survived by her closet friend of 65 years, Dorianne Guernsey of North Pomfret and her husband, Otis. There will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Cancer Research Center at the University Health Center in Burlington, Vt.
MORRISVILLE - Lucy Peters Downing Nisbet
....show , 94, died at her home early Thursday morning, Feb. 17, 2000. She was born Sept.1, 1905, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Sara Peters Downing and Paul Cook Downing. She was a great-granddaughter of John L. Dodge and G. Willis Peters, who were both active in the business and social communities of Great Barrington, Mass., including the Mahaiwe National Bank and the Wyantanuck Country Club in the 1800s. Mrs. Nisbet attended the Knox School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Parsons School of Design in New York City and an art institute in Paris, France. She was married to Edward B. Nisbet of Great Barrington, Mass., on Sept. 10, 1930. Mr. and Mrs. Nisbet resided for many years in Connecticut, in the Stamford and New Canaan areas. In the late 1940s they bought and renovated an old farmhouse in Morrisville, where they summered for several years before retiring there permanently in the 1970s. Mrs. Nisbet served as a volunteer at Copley Hospital in Morrisville for many years. She is survived by a niece, Lucy Downing Allardice of New York; three nephews, Paul C. Downing III of New Jersey, John C. Downing and Michael P. Downing of Florida; and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at her home, 1108 Elmore Mountain Rd., Morrisville. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Mahaiwe Cemetery, Great Barrington, Mass. BURLINGTON - Clarisse (Rockwell) Spawn
....show went home to be with the Lord from the Vermont Respite House on Thursday, Feb. 17. 2000, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born April 10, 1929, in New York State, the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Mackey) Rockwell. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1950, she married Donald (Bud) Spawn of Chittenango, N.Y., in 1951. She was a 37-year resident of South Burlington with her husband. Claire led a full and vibrant life, enjoying skiing, music, gardening, reading, sewing, lakes and mountains, the cabin in the Adirondacks, her family, grandchildren, and friends, and her strong faith. She is survived by Don, her husband of 48 years; her children, Peter Spawn and his wife, Patti, in Chelmsford, Mass., Dora Schramm and her husband, Ken, in Morrisville, Wendy Hagel and her husband, Gary, in Lake Forest Park, Wash.; and five grandchildren, Tom, Caleb, Ariana, Nathan and Lauren. Claire is also survived by one sister, Olive Engle and her husband, Al, in Tennessee; her sister-in-law, Janet Westerberg and her husband, John, in Williamstown, N.Y.; eight nieces and nephews, Ed Monnat, Andy Monnat, Cindy Williams, Doug Westerberg and Kathy Berry in New York State, Vicki Lewis in North Carolina, Margie Engle in Virginia and Bill Engle in Colorado; and 17 grandnieces and grandnephews. Claries cousins, Ruth Borst, Bob Rockwell, Channing Rockwell and Lester Marvin, live in New York State. Clarie was predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Mary (Mackey) Rockwell of Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister, Lilian Monnat of Lowville, N.Y.; and three aunts, Doris Cronk, Grayce Marvin and Olive Smith. Claries friends and relatives are invited to celebrate her life during visiting hours on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union St., Burlington, and at a service at noon on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, 81 St. Paul St., Burlington. All are welcome to a lunch reception at the church immediately following the service. EAST BERKSHIRE - Donald H. Woodward
....show , 80, husband of the late Alice (Shangraw) Woodward, who predeceased him June 22, 1997, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in the Verdelle Village ECF in St. Albans following a long battle with cancer. Visiting hours will be held one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Avenue in Enosburg Falls. Interment will be next spring in the East Berkshire Congregational Cemetery.
