BURLINGTON - Captain Bernard Joseph Hickey
....show , longtime resident of the Burlington area, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Wake Robin in Shelburne on Monday, Feb. 7, 2000. He was 90, having enjoyed 25 years of retirement living after a 40-year career as a skipper with United States Lines. Born in Fitchburg, Mass., on March 21, 1909, Bernard was the son of the late Michael J. Hickey and Nonie McDonald Hickey. On Oct. 8, 1957, he married Evelyn M. (Atkins DAmato) Hickey. Evelyn passed away Sept. 17, 1982. His death marks the passing of one more unique fragment of the generation of Americans known and celebrated as the World War II generation, men and women characterized by true grit, strong character, unswerving loyalty to country and lack of confusion over moral principles and the acceptance of personal responsibility. He attended Boston University before joining United States Lines as a merchant seaman in 1936. Fair skinned Bernard spent his life at sea and earned the nickname of "Red" which was to stick with him his whole life. As a merchant marine and Naval Reserve officer during the war, he had four ships sunk from beneath him, two merchant ships by mines before Pearl Harbor, then two Navy armed "AK" cargo vessels after the U.S. entered the war. The fourth sinking, by a German Raider in the south Atlantic, resulted in his being taken prisoner by the Germans, who landed him into a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Indonesia. He spent the final three years of the war in the Japanese labor camps, building railroads in the Indonesian islands, and surviving the forced marches and brutal conditions made famous in the movie "Bridge Over the River Kwai." He recalled that he helped bury some 25 or so fellow prisoners who died under these conditions every day. He was sunk yet a fifth time while being transported on a Japanese ship in the Strait of Mallaca from one railroad camp to another, this time by a British submarine which was unaware of the human allied cargo aboard. Of the 7,000 prisoners packed like sardines on that Japanese ship, some ten percent survived, being picked up by escorting Japanese destroyers. He was promptly placed again in the camps. He survived the brutality of the camps and some 30 bouts of malaria, living to recount the experience with his British, Dutch and American companion survivors periodically over the decades after the war. He entered the camps at 190 pounds and was reduced to 95 pounds when U.S. Army Rangers at wars end finally freed him. While he was reluctant to discuss the Japanese torments, he was able to understand without brooding resentment the different cultural background that explained the harshness of his captors behavior. He was a leader of allied prisoners and led numerous attempts to break out of prison. One night, having succeeded in breaking out to freedom, he had to surreptitiously break back into prison; his team having failed to start a Japanese warplane they had counted on for a getaway. Discovery of escape attempts meant certain death by bayonet. After the war he rejoined the shipping company United States Lines, moving swiftly up the ranks to become its top skipper and was given the assignment of breaking in its newest ships. He was a natural leader and skilled navigator and plied both the northern Atlantic and Pacific routes for over 40 years. His last command was the 700 foot, 30,000 ton fast container cargo vessel American Liberty. A strong-willed man, he was at home on the sea and among the cargo trade, turning down repeated offers to turn in his boots and move to the executive suite. At one point he rejected assignment as skipper of the Lines flagship, the S.S. United States because he was not attracted to the requirements of entertaining affluent diners. He remained in the Naval Reserves and rose to the rank of commander. He was called to duty to skipper a vessel in the eastern Mediterranean during the Beirut crisis of 1958. He was particularly proud of his reserve assignment as executive officer of the Navy Aircraft Carrier, John F. Kennedy, during her maiden sea trials off the coast of Virginia. During his years in Burlington, he served as navigator of the well-known ocean racing yacht, New World, owned by Dr. Phil Davis. His skills were so valued that, during one race in the southern Atlantic when he was unable to join the boat and it was caught in heavy storms, he coached the crew through tactics to safety by radiotelephone from his study in Burlington. When "Red retired, he was asked to teach a navigation course at the University of Vermont. He is survived by his sister, Helen Barrett; two daughters, Marianne Lancer and her husband, Bruce, of Bristol and Christine Corcoran and her husband, James, of Florida; and two sons, Vincent Hickey and his wife, Carol, of West Berkshire, and Richard DAmato and his wife, Dorothy, of Annapolis, Md. Both sons also served in the Navy. Mr. DAmato and Ms. Lancer also both served as legislative assistants for Senator James Jeffords. His grandchildren are Morgan Lancer, Shane Lancer, Timothy McKenzie, Catherine McKenzie, Kohler McKenzie, Alexander McKenzie, Jonathan Hickey, Allison Hickey, and Lauren Hickey. He is also survived by his dear companion of many years, Eileen Gilbert of Shelburne. Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn M. Hickey; and by brothers, Thomas Hickey, Walter Hickey and Edward Hickey and sister, Mary Hickey. Captain Hickey was a member of the Lake Champlain Yacht Club, the Navy League, the Council of American Master Mariners, and the Retired Officers Association, USNR. An avid Red Sox fan, Red was ever disappointed by the Soxs inability to win the World Series. His children and grandchildrens sports endeavors were supported and appreciated, whether they be in baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, track, horseback riding, sailing or canoeing. He was a devoted husband, caring companion and "old-fashioned father." A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home in Burlington. Visiting hours will be from 6 p.m. until the time of the service when the family will receive friends and family to celebrate the long and adventurous life of the Captain.
