FAIRFIELD - Paul Eben Crosby Sr.
....show of Fairfield passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, 2000, in Holiday House in St. Albans, just short of his 93rd birthday. His family guesses that he looked out and saw his shadow and decided to go back to his maker rather than face six more weeks of winter. Paul was born April 9, 1907, in Wakefield, Mass. He was married for 70 years to Martha Windsor Slusser, who preceded him in death Nov. 4, 1996. Paul now joins her "in the garden." Paul called four places "home" during his lifetime: Colebrook and Redding, Conn., Piscataway, N.J., and "Crosbys End of the Road" in Fairfield. His jobs ranged from tending camels for the circus in Florida at age 17 to tax collector and constable of the town of Fairfield in his 80s. The Aluminum Company of America was his employer for 30 years and his benefactor for 33 yers of retirement. Licensed by the Episcopal Church in Connecticut as a lay reader, he served the Tri-Church parish in East Fairfield in that capacity. In Connecticut, he was an active member of the Grange, his children recalling most vividly his time as Master. Paul was well known for his recitations and was often called upon to render "Casey at the Bat" and "The Cremation of Sam Magee." A frustrated, factory-bound, would-be farmer all his life, his dream was to retire to Vermont, where he had spent most of his vacations helping friends during haying season. He lived to see his dream come true. He spent retirement as part-time farmer, tax collector, grandfather and great-grandfather, jack-of-all-trades, neighbor and friend. His smaller friends and neighbors remember him as the "Candyman." For the past two years, Paul had been a resident of Brownway in Enosburg Falls, where his family will be foreve grateful for the loving staff and excellent care he received. His final three days were spent in the warm and loving environment of Holiday House in St. Albans. The family thanks all those who cared for him in his final hours and supported them in their sadness. Grateful thanks go to his doctor, friend and neighbor, Dr. Amy Roberts of Fairfield, for the special care and counsel she provided him and his children in his final years. Paul is survived by the last of his five brothers, Samuel Crosby of Georgetown, Maine; daughter and son-in-law Gail and Sam Leggett of Sagamore Beach, Mass.; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Eben Jr. and Linda Crosby of Newton, N.J.; and daughter Priscilla Dawson of Fairfield. Also mourning his loss are grandchildren Elizabeth, Julian, Kimberly, Jacqueline, Kathleen, Eben and Richard; great-grandchildren Alex, Morgan, Connor, Amelia, Claire and Joshua; and special family membes Linda, Sara and Neil Vanslette of Fairfield. BURLINGTON - Raymond C. Leach Jr.
....show , 49, of Barley Road died suddenly in Oneonta, N.Y., on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000. He was born in Elmira, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 1950, the son of Raymond C. Leach Sr. and Dorothy (Carpenter) Leach. He was a graduate of Burlington High School, Class of 1970. July 31, 1976, he was married in Bristol to Melody Benjamin. He was employed at Fletcher Allen Health Care, where he worked as an autopsy technician for the last 29 years. Ray was more than a loving husband, father and son-in-law who was so very much loved, but he was everyones friend. He leaves behind more than family, but friends too numerous to begin to mention. He took such pride in his job at the hospital, of his teaching and befriending the new medical students and residents who came from all over to study and work in Pathology. He leaves behind many friends for whom, over the years, he had mowed their grass, shoveled their driveways and bowled a good game with. "I find it so hard to believe that I will never hear my Raymond laugh again; to hear him say, "I love you;" to see the love in his eyes when he watches his children. To simply say good-bye just seems too soon.
