, 74, of Randolph, died Aug. 21. Born in 1924 in Barre, he was the son of Robert and Anna (Carter) Carpenter. He attended Waterbury schools and graduated from Waterbury High School. He served with the Navy during WWII and married Muriel Phelphs in 1952. He worked for New England Telephone & Telegraph as a lineman, retiring in 1977. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert III, James and John; three daughters, Joanna Carpenter, Jennifer Murray and Jeanette; one brother; one sister; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

, 93, of Williamstown, died Aug. 20. Born in 1905 in Williamstown, he was the son of Fred and Bertha (Metcalf) Flint. He attended Williamstown schools. He had been married to Gertrude Williams, who died in 1946. In 1964, he married Mary Ellen Campbell. He purchased a farm in Williamstown, which he operated with his sons. He worked for the Williamstown Highway Department until his retirement. He had been a member of the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Shirley Flint, Evalyn Goodrich and Barbara Campbell; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

, 53, of Northfield, died Aug. 19. Born in 1944 in Bryan, Ohio, he was the son of Walter and Opal (Zimmerman) Gambler. He attended Bryan public schools and graduated from Adrian College and received a master's degree from Oakland University. In 1977, he earned a doctorate in mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 1967, he married Elisabeth Louise Herschel. He taught math at SUNY Maritime College and then became a professor of mathematics at Norwich University in Northfield. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mamaroneck and Northfield. Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael; a daughter, Jessica; five brothers; two sisters; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

, 78, of Middlesex, died Aug. 9. Born in 1920 in Cuba, he was the son of Sean and Rosetta Scott. He was an accomplished pianist, clarinetist and composer. He retired in 1972 due to ill health. He moved to Middlesex in 1987. Survivors include his companion, Mary McKay.

She received her early education in Marshfield public schools and graduated from Twinfield High School. In 1979, she married Larry Lee Eldred. She was employed as a bookkeeper at the Berlin Convalescent Center and later she and her husband purchased and operated the Woodbury Country Store. She operated a day care in Woodbury, retiring in April. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Rickie Bowen and Walter Eldred; a daughter, Tammy Eldred; her father; a granddaughter; a brother; a sister; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

, 50, of Middlesex, died Aug. 16. Born in 1947 in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Irene (Goldowsky) and Gilbert Shapiro. He was educated at the New York College of Music, NYU, Johnson State college where he received a BA degree in music education and at Norwich University where he received a master's degree in Ethnomusicology. He was a tenured professor at Johnson State College, where he founded the Commercial Music Program. He was a member of the Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly in Waterbury Center. Survivors include his wife, Betsy (Ayers) Shapiro; a daughter, Emily Shapiro; three sons, Prof. Adam Shapiro; Jesse Shapiro and Christopher Shapiro; his mother; a sister; a niece, a nephew and cousins.

, 82, of Bradford, died Aug. 20. Born in 1915 in Barre, she was the daughter of Harry and Jessica (Worcester) Davis. She attended school in Bradford and graduated from Bradford Academy. She graduated from Lyndon Normal School and taught school in Middlesex, Corinth and West Fairlee. She also worked for Central Vermont Public Service in Bradford. In 1943, she married Maurice Sumner, who died in 1981. They moved to West Fairlee where she became postmistress. She was also the bookkeeper for her husband's construction business. She was very active in the West Fairlee Congregational Church. Survivors include her daughter, Linda Jean Jacobs; a granddaughter, Carey Anne Jacobs; a grandson, Craig Jacobs.

He attended schools in South Barre and St. Monica's School in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School. He had served in the Army and following discharge, became a milk delivery man for Booth Brothers Dairy. In 1957, he established the Larry Chouinard Backhoe Service. He also operated the Skyview Casino in Williamstown and more recently, had operated Larry's Driving Range also in Williamstown. In 1957, he married Josephine Desilets. He was a member of St. Monica Church and of the Barre Town Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife; a son, Allen; three daughters, Cheryl Chouinard Zorzi, Janice Edson and Brenda Yacavoni; nine grandchildren; four brothers; nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her husband; a son and a daughter from a previous marriage, Neil Sayers and Amy Sayers; a daughter, Ashlyn Kate Barcomb; her mother and step-father Raymond Hotte; her maternal grandparents; two brothers; aunts, uncles, two nieces and two nephews.

More recently he was employed by the Vermont Agency of Transportation at the Central Garage in Berlin. He attended the Grace United Methodist Church in Plainfield. He worked as a logger and farmer and for the towns of Tunbridge and Strafford. In 1938, he married Jessie E. Perkins. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gardner Jr. and Richard; three daughters, Ruby Shute, Shirley Hosmer and Penny Russell; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren.

, 78, of Randolph, died Aug. 23. Born in 1920 in Randolph, she was the daughter of Hugh and Ethel (Rye) Seaver. She graduated from Randolph High School and Green Mountain College in Poultney. She worked as assistant to the dean at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and later was assistant director of nursing at Gifford Memorial Hospital and director of volunteer services. She retired in 1987. In 1948, she married Verner Johnson, who died i 1977. In 1988, she married Verner Johnson, who died in 1996. She was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ. Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Prosser; a stepdaughter, Carol Norris; a stepson, Jay Friend; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
