, 27, of Northfield, died Aug. 25. Born in 1970 in Morristown, N.J., he was the son of Stephen and Joyce (Lockhart) Malpere. He graduated from high school in Merritt Island, FL and from Norwich University with a degree in political science. He was studying for his master's degree. He was a lieutenant in the Marine Corps and served in Cuba and other bases in the U.S. He served with the Second Marine Division in the Adriatic aboard the Marine amphibious ship Kearsage. He was assistant director of admissions at Norwich Univerisity and attended St. John the Evangelist Church in Northfield. In 1995, he married Heidi M. (Krause) DuChene. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gerald DuChene-Malpere and Michael Malpere; his mother; two brothers; a sister; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Shatney, Ray E.

, 94, of East Calais, died Aug. 26. Born in 1902 in Woodbury, he was the son of Eugene and Hattie (Parker) Shatney. He attended schools in Woodbury. In 1926, he married Ivis May Hart, who died in 1982. He owned and operated Shatney's Garage until 1949. He later worked at Wells Lamson Quarry in Websterville and reopened Shatney's Garage and operated it until retirement in the 1970s. He was a member of the Woodbury Fire Department. Survivors include his daughter, Muriel (Mrs. William) Hudson; a step-brother; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

, 63, of Barre, died Aug. 27. Born in 1934 in Albany, he was the son of James and Avis (Shedd) Goad. He attended schools in Albany and later attended an automobile mechanic school in Connecticut. He was married to Patricia Clark, they later divorced. He had been a transmission and auto mechanic in the Burlington area and had worked at Appleby's Garage in Hardwick. More recently, he was employed as supervisor at Kirby House in Waterbury, retiring in 1996. Survivors include his companion, Betty McLaughlin; four sons, Ted, Todd, Timothy and Thomas; a daughter, Tammy Ricard; four grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; nieces and nephews.

, 89, formerly of Middlesex/Montpelier, died Aug. 29. Born in 1907 in Middlesex, she was the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Cutler) Cooley. She graduated from Montpelier High School. IN 1928, she married Clifton Peterson, who died in 1988. She worked at National Life Insurance of Vermont and the Farwell Store in Montpelier. She also worked with the Vermont Agriculture Department, where she retired. She was a member of the Unitarian Church. Survivors include two two daughters, Janet (Mrs. Alfred Durkee and Jean (Mrs. Jerry) Durkee; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters; nieces and nephews.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. His wife Joyce Hunt Viens, is previously deceased. , 88, formerly of Randolph, died Aug. 28. Born in 1909 in Randolph, she was the daughter of Forrest and Mayme Murray Cram. She graduated from Williamstown High School. In 1933, she married Floyd Safford, who died in 1984. She had worked for Warner Brothers Manufacturing Co. in Malone, N.Y. and the Head Start program for 10 years. She also worked for the Franklin County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Chasm Falls Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Brown; two sons, F. Norman Safford and Terry Safford; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

, 82, of Randoph Center, died Sept. 2. Born in 1915 in Burlington, he was the son of Fred and Amelia (Dickel) Bean. His family moved to Randolph in 1917, where he was educated. He operated a dairy farm until retiring in 1987. He also drove a school bus, operated a rubbish route and was a carpenter for Menard Brothers and Kenneth Manning. In 1940, he married Glenora Somerville. Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard Jr.; seven daughters, Margaret Brown, Barbara Comette, Geraldine English, Deborah Jarvis, Vicki Cook, Rita Hull and Brenda Fullam; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

He worked for the state of Vermont in the Purchasing, Central Stores and Postal System Department, retiring in 1985. In 1950, he married Helen Peck, who died in 1967. In the 1960s, he and his brother Wayne, established Breer Brothers Inc. He retired in 1989. In 1986, he married Celia (Gray) Winters. They had lived in Barre, South Barre and Orange and for the past year in Littleton, N.H. She worked as a nurse at Barre Town Elementary School and later at U-32 School in East Montpelier. She had been a member of St. Monica's Church. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Reid and Mark; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; her step-father, Roy Gregoire; a sister, Dolores Cook.

She retired in 1981.
