NOTE: I believe this was compiled from
published records by an unknown person and most of the year dates for the
last quarter of 1842 must have been written as 1843 if the end note
"From Oct 15, 1842 to Sept 14, 1843 84 Deaths" is correct.
(. . .) indicates space left for information but never filled in by the
compiler. I tried to interpret the handwriting correctly, but there may be errors of interpretation.
Also remember this information is at least third-hand if not more and you should check other sources to substantiate the
information and dates whenever possible.
Further study may yield the type of epidemic.
Less than a third of these names are in the
Derby Vermont Vital Records Index for these years.
Sarah Haselton McKenny, Newport,
VT
NOTE: I have received a transcript of an original 1843 letter giving
insight into the terrible epidemic of that time and it mentions some of the
people found listed in the 1842-43 Death List.
It is from the genealogy files of Patricia
Rushlow Kilborn of Newport, Vermont. She explained that the letter was a copy
of correspondence written to Hannah Willey Perkins who lived in Thornton, New
Hampshire, by John M. and Elizabeth (Willey) Grow of Derby, Vermont.
The other people that were mentioned are
identified in the letter as: Uncle Asa Spenser, Aunt Deborah Willey Spenser,
Child: Amas Spenser, DP: David Perkins.
According to "Family Chronicle Magazine", Sept/Oct 1997,
Erysipelas is a disease which caused burning heat.
Other explanations of the disease; take your choice.....
Erysipelas: an acute febrile, infectious disease characterized by a deep
red inflammation of the skin, usually accompanied by swelling skin lesions.
Erysipelas is an acute infection of the skin and underlying fat tissues, usually caused by the streptococcus bacteria.
Erysipelas (Erysipelis) - St. Anthony's Fire, an acute febrile disease accompanied with
a diffused inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes.
Contagious and often epidemic. September 1998
Contents of letter is listed below these deaths.

Derby - April 19 1843
Dear Brother & Sister
After a long time I begin my 3rd letter to you.
Although you may suppose (& with reason too) that I had forgotten you yet be assured I have not
but knowing that you were receiving frequent communications from here I have delayed to write.
It has been very sickly here the winter past & in this town there have been no less than
59 deaths since the middle of Oct. last.
Uncle Spencer's family are all gone...the 28 of March Amasa died, Aunt the 29th & Uncle the 4th of Apl.
Amasa and Aunt were both buried in one day & in one grave.
Surely we are carried away as with a flood. There appears but a step between us and death.
The last day of March Mrs. Hyde died and this day Mrs. Gould died.
Whose turn it will be next the Lord only knows. Oh may we all be prepared for the solemn event.
Our health and that of our surviving friends is tolerable good though most of us have been sick.
Our little boy was taken sick the 27th Jan & for a few days we expected he could not live.
Soon after he began to recover Elizabeth was taken sick but kept about all the time.
The 11th of March I was attacked with the same disease (the erysipelas) and had a hard time.
My face was so much swelled that I did not see out of my left eye for 8 or 10
days & for the most of one day was blind.
The back part of my head was so much swelled that my hair had to be
shaved off so that nitrate of silver could be applied. My face was shining black it was so much swelled.
Our little girl has been well. Yesterday at church, Apl 24th,
married by Elder Nathan Denison, Mr. Jesse W. Spencer to Miss Lucinda Wilcox both of Derby.
The weather continued cold and the snow deep until about the 10th of this month when it came on
warm, has not froze since. The snow which was about 3 feet deep went in about 4 or 5 days.
There has been little sugar made this season & the prospect is that there can be little more made.
D. P. says he is going to write to have you come up here when you get your springs work done & I say come too, &
be sure to bring H. & A. with you.
The Millerites have made deplorable work in Stanstead a few miles from here.
Many families have made no provision for themselves after the 14th of this month & are in destitute circumstances.
One of their leading men has lost 13 head of cattle & 39 sheep through neglect - has hay enough in his barn.
He says he has lost $1000 in consequence of believing the doctrine. I shall not attempt to describe their conduct.
Suffice it to say they have acted more like those who were crazy or mad than like rational beings.
They had fixed upon the 14 of this month for going up as they term it & prepared for themselves white robes so as
supersede the necessity of being clothed with the robe of Christ's righteousness.
I presume you have had a plenty of water on your intervale this spring - hope it has done you no
damage.
April 26th
Lydia Robbins youngest daughter of Isaac Robbins was buried today. She had the spinal complaint.
Heard from Chs. a few days ago - he is at Craftsbury - was well then.
Our friends and all for whom we had ought to be concerned (that are living) as far as my knowledge extends, are well.
The epidemic that has prevailed here the winter past has ceased.
know of but one case at present but the measles are prevailing considerably -
has not proved fatal in any case yet. P's have had them - ours have been twice exposed & have not had them yet.
Hogs (?) are scarce, not 1 to a family in town and money is still more scarce.
I wish to see how you can get blacking of L. W. Winter of Campton by the quart.
I think it must come cheaper than by the bottle & bring me up a
quart or 2 of his best & I will pay you for it and your trouble when you come up after springs work.
Yours,
J. M. & E. Grow
If you can & will pardon my past neglect & write to me - you shall have an immediate answer.
Write soon. Respects to all friends.
