Richard Allen Peters of Groton, Vt., passed away as he wished, at his home, on March 23, 2018, after an extended period of failing health. Richard was born May 12, 1939, in Lancaster, N.H., to Adelbert and Shirley Peters and raised in St. Johnsbury, Vt., with siblings Wayne, Sherry and Joanne. Most will agree, he will be remembered most by his amazing gift of telling stories and driving at his own pace in his old 78 Ford truck. He appreciated the simple life and treasured time spent with family and friends. Richard graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1957 and spent the next four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Wanda Hamlett in 1967 and was blessed with two children: Toby and Julie who later added to the family marrying Carrie Johnson and Troy Oliver and later six grandchildren: Torie, Logan, Shelby, Wyatt, Tynika and Luke, making his life whole every day. Richard worked for 16 years at Fairbanks Morse in St. Johnsbury, Vt. In 1980 he and Wanda purchased the Groton General Store and ran it for 23 years with the wonderful help from Michael Gordon for 16 of those years. The store was sold in 2003 when the "SHUT" sign was permanently placed and he was able to enjoy a relaxed life of retirement. While he carries on with telling his stories to his many friends and family who left before him. A Memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Groton where family and friends left behind can come together to remember and do our best to do what he did best _ tell stories, about Richard, Dick, Peter, Dad, Grandpa, Gramp and the truly blessed life he lived.
