Shirley Greenwood Morgan, 85, of 68 Main Street, Rockport, MA, wife of the late John W. Morgan, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on February 23, 2018. Mrs. Morgan was born in Lyndonville, Vermont in 1932 to the late Edward Michael Greenwood and Lula Isabelle Forbes. She grew up in her family home in Lyndon Center. Mrs. Morgan graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1950 and earned her nursing degree from Mary Hitchcock Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. In 1954 she married John W. Morgan who was studying engineering at Dartmouth College. Following college, Mrs. Morgan moved with her husband around the country who was actively serving in the Army. In 1959, she moved to Rockport to an old family home. She worked as an RN at Beverly Hospital and Addison Gilbert Hospital. She was a frequent volunteer working the Cape Ann Blood Mobile and the Addison Gilbert Hospital's Blood Pressure and Skin Lesion Clinics. Mrs. Morgan was very active in the Cape Ann community having played the violin in the Cape Ann symphony for 50 years, co-chairing the Cape Ann Cancer Society Educational Committee and Chairing the Rockport American Red Cross Committee. She sang in the Rockport Community Chorus, was a volunteer for Rockport Music and a member of the Rockport Garden Club. Mrs. Morgan was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Rockport, serving on multiple committees with various leadership positions, including the Annual Church Fair and Silent auction. She sang with the church choir for over 50 years. Mrs. Morgan had a love of travel and photography, and with her husband, visited many parts of the world, sharing her adventures through pictures with the Cape Ann community by giving many presentations at community gatherings.
Mrs. Morgan is survived by her sons, Robert Morgan and his wife Kathleen Morgan, of Gloucester MA, Peter Morgan and his wife Laurie Morgan of Clifton Park, NY; her sisters Barbara Charland of New Hampshire, Marjorie Legge and her husband Norman of Florida and Mary Ann Dennis and her Husband Gerald of Vermont; five grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Morgan and his wife Meghan (Levick) Morgan of Easthampton, MA, Nicholas Morgan of Allston, MA, Michael Morgan of Charleston, SC, Christina Morgan of Medford, MA and Melissa Morgan of Providence RI; her brother in law A. Benton Morgan of Gloucester, MA and Ledyard CT; and many nieces and nephews.
Her visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester, MA on Friday March 2nd from 5-8 PM. Family and friends are cordially invited. A private burial will take place on Saturday March 10th. Her Memorial Service will be open to the public at the First Congregational Church of Rockport on Saturday March 10th at 2 PM with a reception to follow at the church.
