, 80, 159 Pavillion Lane, Barnet, Vt., died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, of heart failure at his residence. He was born in Haverhill, N.H., Dec. 28, 1923, son of Harold J. Dunbar Sr. and Aileen Marie (White). He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. Harold owned and operated Dunbar Plumbing and Heating Inc. for 40 years in Barnet, retiring in 1987. Harold was a member of Washburn Masonic Lodge F & AM 92 Danville; past member of Mt. Sinai Shrine, Montpelier, Vt.; IOOF CT River Lodge, Barnet; member the Barnet Board of Civil Authority; served on the school board for 18 years; member and former fire chief of Barnet Fire Department for many years; justice of the peace; and director of the West Barnet Meal Site. Surviving relatives include his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Moore) Dunbar of Barnet; one son, Duane H. Dunbar and Londa Grant of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; two daughters, Paula J. Nye and William of Valdese, N.C., and Bonnie Easter and Don of West Barnet, Vt.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Dunbar of McIndoe Falls, Vt.; one sister, Pauline Hart of Wells River, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Three brothers predeceased him, Neil G., Dean and Robert Dunbar. It was Harold's wish that there be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1:30 p.m., in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Route 5, Barnet, Vt. A close friend of the family, Mr. Fran Zaletta, will officiate. , of Sutton, died accidentally Thursday evening, Oct. 14, 2004. She was born in Lancaster, N.H., on July 10, 1962, the daughter of Leonard and Shirley (Crapo) Cantin. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute and attended Lyndon State College. She is survived by four children: Christina Young, Lillian Young, Lisa Young, and John Pormann III; one grandson, Paul William Dunbar; her father, Leonard, of East Haven; her mother of Connecticut; three sisters, Pauline Harris of Lyndonville, Kim Bedor of St. Johnsbury and Cheryl Plonka-Cann of Germany; nieces and nephews. A service of Christian burial will be led by Deacon Al Toborg Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Guibord Funeral Home, Tuesday evening, Oct. 19, 6 to 8 p.m. The casket will be closed. , 74, of New Boston Road, St. Johnsbury, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born in Lyndon Jan. 24, 1930, the daughter of George Wallace and Della (Masure) Gilman. Her first husband, Preston LaCoss, died in 1954; her second husband, Donald Tanner, passed away in 1989. The Tanners owned and operated D & L Feeds on Pearl Street in St. Johnsbury. Lois had also been employed at Maple Grove. She was active in her church, the First Congregational Church UCC, the Women's Fellowship group, and enjoyed making craft products for church sales. She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose 1779 Auxiliary, enjoyed the Tanner/Masure annual family reunions, and was especially appreciative of the Vermont Association for the Blind's area meetings in St. Johnsbury and Newport. She is survived by four children, Carlene Powers and her husband Duane of Island Pond, Stephen LaCoss and his wife Judy of Lyndonville, Brian LaCoss and his wife Nancy of Lyndonville, and Dennis LaCoss of Lyndonville; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Monroe "Sonny" Gilman and his wife Lois of Lyndonville, Norman Gilman of Lyndonville, and Clayton Gilman and his wife Nancy of Sutton; cousins, nieces and nephews; and in-laws. She was predeceased by two sisters, Thelma Masure and Geneva Walker. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church UCC in Lyndonville with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. Committal services will follow at the Lyndon Center Cemetery. , 63, of Mt. Pleasant Trailer Park, St. Johnsbury, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. She was born in Burlington, Nov. 16, 1940, the daughter of Merton M. and Hattie M. (Blay) Badger. She is survived by four children, Raymond Gervais of St. Johnsbury, Lori Gervais and her boyfriend Paul Paradis of St. Johnsbury, Paul Gervais and his wife April of East Burke, and Tina Lamphear and her boyfriend Gaston Romaine of St. Johnsbury; seven grandchildren, Crystal Gervais, Alicia Gervais, David Gervais, Allison Gervais, Taisha Gervais, Scott Gervais and Sean Lamphear; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Badger of Milton, and Pat Badger of Winooski; and nieces and nephews. Services will be at the convenience of the family. , 91, of 11 Landing Way, Dover, N.H., died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at St. Ann's Healthcare in Dover following a short illness. Born in Danville, Vt., March 21, 1913, Mr. Bailey was the son of Mittie Church Bailey and Edward Wynn Bailey. He was raised as a young man on the Church family dairy farm in Danville. He was educated in local schools and as a young man, loved skiing and played basketball and baseball. A product of the Depression, he left farming and Vermont in 1937 and moved to Nashua, N.H., where he married Elizabeth Bennett Welch. They raised a daughter, Patricia, and Elizabeth's four children, Muriel, George, Rosalie and Irving, in Nashua, until Elizabeth's untimely death in a car accident in 1959. His stepson had also died in a car accident in 1939. He married Ila Mae Irwin, a long-time friend, in 1961 and they also made their home in Nashua with her son William until her death from heart disease in 1989. Mr. Bailey was an avid Red Sox fan and also took delight in a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an accomplished gardener, cabinet maker and storyteller. During his working lifetime, he was employed in woodworking, textiles and upon his retirement in 1978 he was employed by the Batesville Casket Company. He moved to Dover, N.H., in 1998, to be closer to his daughter and was a resident at Riverview Apartments on Green Street in Dover until he moved into his daughter's home in 2001. A gregarious man, he was known for his jovial manner and sense of humor and had a large group of frinds during his lifetime. Friends knew him as a devoted Red Sox fan who could cite baseball statistics easily and continued to keep a box score while he watched the games. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Baily Bailly and her husband Richard Bailly, of 11 Landing Way, Dover, with whom he made his home until his recent illness. He is also survived by grandchildren, Robin Gestal and her husband Kenneth of New Canaan, Conn., R. Jeffrey Bailly and his wife Maggie of Newburyport, Mass., and John Bailly and his wife Debra of Newburyport; great-grandchildren, Dean, Jonathan and Bailly Gestal, and Megan, Richard and Thomas Bailly. He is also survived by two stepsons, George Welch and his wife Mihoko of Nashua, N.H., and William Irwin of Milford, N.H.; and stepdaughter, Rosalie Williams of Pepperell, Mass.; and foster-daughter, Catherine Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepgrandchildren, Betty Welch and George Welch, Kevin Irwin, Ruthanne Holt, Betty Herget, Bernard Scott Williams, Rosalie Jane Kimball, Richard Charles Williams, Robert Williams, Eleanor Jones, John Williams, Brian Williams, Heidi Bouchard, and Marian Ford; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac Welch, Alan and Tige Herget, Ryan and Christopher Kimball, Rosalie and Erin Williams, Ashley and Dustin Williams, Branden and Sarajane Ford, Ben and Ryan Williams, Jessica Williams and Marc Ford. A memorial service will be held at the Wiggin-Purdy McCooey-Dion Funral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, N.H., Friday, Oct. 22, at 9:30 a.m. The family will attend burial services at Evergreen Cemetery in Nashua. , of 33 Stiles Terrace, St. Johnsbury, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the age of 41. He is survived by his son, Michael of St. Johnsbury; his parents, Dennis and Marvourine (Hawkins) LeBlanc of St. Johnsbury; his maternal grandmother, Pauline Hawkins of St. Johnsbury; two brothers, Thomas of South Burlington, and Bryan of Denver, Colo.; two nieces, Alex and Sydney; and aunts, uncles and cousins. Born May 9, 1963, in St. Johnsbury, Greg graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1981. Growing up he was a good athlete and enjoyed baseball and football particularly. He spent six years in the Naval Air Force and served aboard The Carl Vinson. The family will observe Greg's death with a private service; burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. , 22, of Littleton, N.H., died suddenly Oct. 13, 2004, outside Baghdad, Iraq, as the result of hostile fire. He was a U.S. Army specialist holding the rank of E-4 and was part of the First Cavalry Division of Fort Hood, Texas. Regnier was born Aug. 14, 1982, in Springfield, Mass., the son of Kevin Regnier of Littleton and Tammy Regnier of Lakeside, Calif. He moved to Littleton with his family seven years ago and attended Littleton High School for part of his freshman year, as well as his sophomore and junior years and later obtained a GED. He also attended Agawam High School in Agawam, Mass. Before enlisting in the Army, he worked at Hitchiner Manufacturing in maintenance, and at Genfoot, Inc. as a machinist, both in Littleton. He wished to be remembered by the mantra, "I lived, I served, and I died," and was dedicated to the First Cavalry, which deemed itself, "the first team." He was very family oriented. He also loved the outdoors and sports, including hunting and fishing. He was a big fan of the New York Yankees. He was predeceased by his great-grandparents, Wilfred and Florence Regnier; and by an uncle, Joseph Velozo. He leaves his father and stepmother, Kevin and Shawn Regnier of Littleton; a sister, Amanda, of Littleton; and a brother, Nicholas, of California. He also leaves paternal grandparents, Edgar and Virginia Regnier of Agawam, Mass.; maternal grandparents, Pat and Richard Dudley of West Springfield, Mass.; six aunts, Sandra and her husband Jan Sadowski of Agawam, Mass., Linda and her husband Kenny Wojcik of Springfield, Mass., Sherry Velozo of Agawam, Mass., Kelly and her husband Steve Shenas of Stuart, Fla., Colleen and her husband Eric Raey of Agawam, Mass., and Meghan Dudley of Springfield, Mass. He also leaves two uncles, Kip and his wife Mary Regnier of Westfield, Mass., and Kim Regnier of Agawam, Mass.; 13 nieces and nephews; and many cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Littleton. The Rev. Ernest Wilkins and the Rev. Lyn McIntosh will officiate. Interment will take place at Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton. , age 24, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, while serving his country in Iraq, a cause he believed in. Alan was born May 30, 1980, in Taunton, Mass., the son of Edward Burgess and Karen (Ferreira). Alan attended Lisbon High School until the 11th grade, then finished and graduated from Oxbow High School in Bradford, Vt., in 1998. Alan was proud to serve his country in the armed forces, joining HHB, 2nd Battalion, 197th Field Artillery on June 6, 2002, in Woodsville, N.H. Alan was called to active duty Jan. 8, 2004, and was deployed to Iraq. He was promoted to specialist Sept. 1, 2004. Alan enjoyed hunting, fishing and computers. Alan is survived by a son, Dakota Burgess of Fairlee, Vt.; his parents, Edward Burgess of Landaff, Karen Moore of Bradford; brother, Edward Burgess Jr. of Maine; sisters, Melissa Burgess of Twin Mountain, Katie Burgess of Landaff, Angela Chamberlain, Sarah Chamberlain and Emily Moore, all of Bradford; a paternal grandmother, Lucille Burgess of Attleboro, Mass.; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Shirley Ferreira of Taunton, Mass.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours will be Sunday, Oct. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Ross Funeral Home, Lisbon Chapel. , 96, of Middle Street, Lancaster, N.H., died Thursday morning, Oct. 21, 2004, at Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster. Mr. Brooks was born in Groveton, July 1, 1908, the son of Albert and Mina (Brunnell) Brooks. Raised in Groveton he was a graduate of Groveton High School. He went on to serve with the U.S. Army in World War II and fought in the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Returning home he took up residence in Lancaster in 1947 with his late wife Doris (Webster) Brooks. For a brief time he worked for Groveton Paper Company. For 20 years he was employed at Gilman Paper Company, retiring in 1971. He was a communicant of All Saints Church, Lancaster. Family members include his son, Daniel W. Brooks of Lancaster; a brother, Philbert Brooks of Groveton; and nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Saturday evening, Oct. 23, from 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at All Saints Church, Lancaster. The Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster.

, 69, a civil engineer and longtime resident of Albany, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, following a long battle with cancer. Rudy was born in Albany, Jan. 14, 1935, the son of Winfred P. and Irene (Boucher) Brow. He attended grade school in Albany and was a graduate of Craftsbury Academy. He received his bachelor of science, cum laude, from Norwich University in Northfield where he was in the ROTC. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and served with the Vermont National Guard. On Sept. 1, 1956, Rudy married Zoe Sweatt in Craftsbury. Together they made their home in Albany and raised their family. Rudy was employed for many years with the state of Vermont Agency of Transportation as a civil engineer. He later was self-employed as a consulting engineer. He had served the town of Albany as a selectman for many years, and was currently the treasurer of the Craftsbury Academy Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion Post 23 in Orleans. Besides his wife Zoe of Albany, he leaves two sons, Douglas Brow of Albany, and Steven Brow of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Johnson of Waterboro, Maine, and Cathie Melvin and her husband Andy of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara Stone and her husband Keith of Albany; two brothers, Lawrence "Lonnie" Brow and his wife Marla of Orleans, and Roger Brow of Palmetto, Fla.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond "Peno" Brow. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Albany recreation field on Route 14. CHAMPAGNE: Verla Bickford ....show
, 84, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Grafton County Nursing Home in Haverhill, N.H. Verla was born in Wheelock, Vt., Feb. 2, 1920. She married Roger Champagne and eventually settled in Glastonbury, Conn. They were caretakers at Arbor Acres Farms and of the Saglio family. Verla and Roger then moved to Wells River and resided at 23 Elm St. for 25 years. Verla was a caregiver and cook for many folks in the greater Lyndonville and Wells River areas, including the Lindbergh family; she was especially fond of Anne Morrow Lindbergh and her daughter Reeve, of whom she spoke often. Verla and Roger went dancing on Saturday nights in Lyndonville as often as they could and enjoyed the Big Band era music. She was a talented cook and when she rattled her pots and pans, out came some culinary delights. Verla loved feeding and watching the birds; the cardinal was her favorite. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roger, April 27, 1991; and a son, Emile, Dec. 11, 2001. She is survived by her son, Brett and his wife Carolyn of Ellington, Conn.; and "the apple of her eye" granddaughter, Shelby of Ellington, Conn.; a grandson, Jeffrey Driscoll; and a close niece, Rosalie "Sue" Rhodes of Newport, Vt., who served as her guardian. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert H. Sargent, retired, will officiate. Friends may gather beginning at 10 a.m. to share their remembrances.
