, 94, of Placid Avenue, Stratford, Conn., died Oct. 27, 2002. She was an active member of the Groton Methodist Church in Groton, Vt., and Trinity Nazarene Church in North Haverhill, N.H. She was a direct descendant of Andrew Warner, who came to Boston in 1620 and was one of the founders of Hadley, Mass., and Hartford, Conn. She was predeceased by her husband, John Henry Smith, and a granddaughter, Donna Marie Pollock. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Nigro Berger of Stratford, and Frances Edwards of Groton, Vt.; a son, John Haviland Smith of Texas City, Texas; grandchildren Laurence Smith of Milford, Conn., Michael J. Edwards II of St. Albans, Sharon Lancaster of Houston, Texas, Deborah Schomaker of Cairo, Ga., David Smith of Houston, Texas, John Smith of League City, Texas, Frank Smith of Texas City, Texas, and Charles Smith of Kingwood, Texas; several great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 29.

, 93, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at her St. Johnsbury House residence, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002. Formerly of 613 Summer St., Mrs. Garey walked everywhere keeping up with her busy schedule. She was born in Swanton, Nov. 25, 1908, and was the last surviving child born to Nelson and Louisa Mary (Greenia) Martin. Her husband George passed away May 30, 1978. Mrs. Garey was a strong member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, where she particularly liked to handle the coffee hour. In 1996 the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce awarded Mrs. Garey with its inaugural Volunteer of the Year award. She volunteered at the Chamber Information Booth and helped with large mailings. She volunteered at the American Red Cross blood drawings for over 30 years, serving up coffee, juice and doughnuts. She also volunteered at Caledonia Home Health. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program - NEK. Occupationally, Mrs. Garey did the cooking at the old Brightlook Hospital and at the St. Johnsbury House. Many will remember her from Gold Crown Lanes, where she provided baby-sitting services for 26 years. She had a 60-year passion for bingo, which she loved to play wherever it was offered in the area. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Garey of Haverhill, N.H.; five grandchildren and their families, Rick and Brenda Garey and children Samantha and Sean; Marylynn and Troy Wright and children Patrick, Christian, Noah, Juliaunne, TJ, Carrie and Crystal; Kelly and Dr. Steven Lossigian and children Avery and Daniel; Lisa and Mark Avery and children Bodie and Ty; and Sarah Garey and friend Michael Wright. , 46, of 62 Log Cabin Lane, Bethlehem, N.H., passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at home, after a long battle with breast cancer. Born Jan. 16, 1956, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of Ronald and Jeannine (Emerson) Gardner. Having grown up in Derby, Vt., she was a 1974 graduate of North Country Union High School. On May 22, 1976, in Newport, Vt., she married Ronald Cosmo Fedele. Together they moved to Portsmouth, N.H., where she worked for Shaw's Supermarket while her husband was employed by A & P Supermarket. In 1977, the couple settled in Bethlehem. She was employed by the People's Bank and served the communities of Littleton and Franconia for many years. Ronni is remembered as a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Ron, of Bethlehem; two daughters, Andrea of Twin Mountain, and Allison of Bethlehem; her parents, Ronald and Jeannine Gardner of Whitefield; her sister, Laurie Ward of Tewksbury, Mass.; two brothers, Dan Gardner of Tiverton, R.I., and Glenn Gardner of Littleton; several nieces and nephews, and her husband's parents, Cosmo and Yvette Fedele of Newport, Vt. , 53, formerly of Hardwick, died Oct. 26, 2002, in Phoenix, Ariz. Born Dec. 21, 1948, in St. Johnsbury, he was the son of Clarence and Louise (Houston) Hale, the youngest of six children. He graduated from Hardwick Academy, Class of 1966, and had lived in Phoenix for over 15 years. While living in Hardwick, he was a communicant of St. Norbert's Church. Roger is survived by his mother, Louise Hale Salls; a sister, Rosalie Richardson of Hardwick; three brothers, Lawrence Hale of Morrisville, David Hale of Longmont, Colo., and Thomas Hale of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and a brother, Bert Hale. A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m., at St. Norbert's Church in Hardwick. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hardwick. , 46, of Sonstrom Rd., Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Groveton, N.H., died in Anchorage, Oct. 28, 2002, a victim of domestic violence. She was born in Lancaster, N.H., Nov. 29, 1955, the daughter of Jay J. and Bethany "Betty" (McGuire) Gould of Groveton. She grew up in Groveton, graduating from Groveton High School in 1974. Gail traveled to many places during her marriage to her first husband Kirk Young as he was in the Navy. She moved to Alaska seven years ago, where she was employed as a brokerage specialist for UPS for the past six years, and also worked for Wells Fargo Bank in Anchorage as a mortgage counselor for the past five years. Gail's hobbies included collecting clowns and listening to country music. Her interests were devoted to her loving family, her employers and Special Olympics in memory of her brother, Eric Jay Gould. While living in the Groveton area, she was a communicant of Groveton United Methodist Church. She will be remembered by everyone as a very caring person. Gail is survived by her son, Kyle Andrew Young of Atlanta, Ga.; her daughter Bridget Lyn Young of Olney, Md.; her parents, Jay and Betty Gould of Groveton; four sisters, Janice J. , 69, died at his home in East Burke Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002. He was born Nov. 2, 1933 in St. Johnsbury, the son of the late Earl C. and Hazel L. (Dresser) Humphrey. He was a graduate of the St. Johnsbury Trade School, Class of 1952. In 1954 he entered the U.S. Army, serving three years. He then served five years in the USAR Vermont Military District. On Aug. 27, 1955 he married Marion Mitchell. Zeke worked for Vance Tree Contractors in Danville for 10 years. Following that, he worked as a truck driver for the town of Lyndon for 24 years. After his retirement he continued driving truck for area contractors until failing health forced him to fully retire. Zeke enjoyed his pulling ponies for many years, pulling throughout New England and New York. He was a member of the Eastern Draft Horse Pulling Association, Northeast Kingdom Pulling Association and the Mid-State Draft Pony Association for many years. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marion (Mitchell) Humphrey of East Burke; four sons, Acklin Humphrey of Sheffield, William "Bill" Humphrey and wife Cynthia Stuart of Concord, Cedric "Ced" Humphrey Jr. and wife Judy of Indian Town, Fla., and Stanley Humphrey and wife Jeannie of Waverly, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, Robert Humphrey and wife Virginia of Naples, Fla. , 63, a long-time resident of St. Johnsbury, died at the Rutland Regional Hospital, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. He was born in St. Johnsbury April 5, 1939, the son of Delphis and Minerva (Chappell) LaBounty. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1958, he had worked for Fairbanks Scales as a purchasing agent. In 1976-77 he was a coordinator for the Junior Achievement Program in New York. Other interests included hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. During his years at the Academy, he played in the band as a drummer and in 1958 went to Washington, D.C., to play in the Presidential Inauguration. Survivors include three daughters, Kim and husband David Coe of Chandler, Ariz., Sandy and husband Clayton Gilbert of Wallingford, Vt., and Terri and husband Rene Rodriguez of Holden, Mass.; one brother, Gene LaBounty of St. Johnsbury; two sisters, Pam Raposa of Hartford, Conn., and Joan McCahill of Florida; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a niece. , 92, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center where she had resided since January 2001. She was born in Barnet, Feb. 28, 1910, the daughter of Earl and Bertha (Heath) Roundy. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1928. For many years she was in the hotel business in Bethlehem, N.H., Florida and Vermont. Pearle was a member of the South Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury and the St. John de Crevecoeur Chapter of the DAR. Survivors include her son, David E. Lynch of Walden; two grandchildren, Stephanie D. (Rolland) Berube of Danville, and Abigail D. Lynch of Walden; a sister, Elaine Roundy Humphrey of Lyndonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, T. Malcolm Lynch in January 1959; a daughter, Valerie Lynch Buck in March 1982; a sister, Carolyn Roundy Currie in June 1982; a son-in-law, Richard H. , 84, of North Road, Lancaster, died Monday morning, Nov. 4, 2002, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, after a brief illness. Mrs. MacKillop was born in her grandparents' house in the Jefferson Meadows on May 1, 1918, the daughter of Chilion and Mildred (Merrow) Kennett. After graduating from Lancaster Academy she worked for Roberts Motor Sales as a secretary and later worked for Frank Smith Company, Six Gun City and Martin Snack Bar in Jefferson. Holidays and reunions with her family and friends brought her the greatest enjoyment. The biggest highlight of her life was her 84th birthday that was attended by over 150 relatives and friends. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau and the American Legion. Family members include eight sons, Edward W. MacKillop of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Robert MacKillop of Lancaster, Ronald MacKillop and wife Kay of Guildhall, James MacKillop and wife Susan of Lancaster, John MacKillop and wife Sandy of Lancaster, Michael MacKillop and wife Jade of Lancaster, Timothy MacKillop and Robin Fearon of Lancaster, Richard MacKillop of Lancaster; seven daughters, Linda Hopps of Groveton, Peggy Brown of Lancaster, Cheryl MacKillop of Lancaster, Patricia Kipp and husband Steve of Florida, Judith Paschal and husband Wayne of Berlin, Joyce Bean of Lancaster, Debra MacKillop and Raymond Frizzell of Stark; a brother, Bernard C. , 94, of Hartland, Vt., died Nov. 4, 2002, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after having been stricken at home Oct. 31. She was born in Glover, Nov. 4, 1908, daughter of the late Luther W. and Helen M. (Rich) Merriam, one of 10 children, and lived in Lyndonville before moving to Hartland in 1932. She was a retired school teacher, beginning her career in 1932 at the Hartland Elementary School, teaching the first four grades in the two-room village schoolhouse, having been hired by Everett H. Miller, then chairman of the Hartland School Board, whom she subsequently married in 1935. Mrs. Miller then taught in the Windsor State Street School from 1955 until her retirement in 1976. She was known for her humorous story-telling ability and artistic talents including costume creations and school play productions. She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener, maintaining beautiful flower gardens until the time of her death. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute and Lyndon State Teachers College, both in Lyndon. She was a member of Thomas Chittenden Chapter of DAR, a former member of the Hartland Historical Society, and formerly was a volunteer at the Gift Shop at Mt. Ascutney Hospital, as well as the Hartland Correspondent for the Valley News for many years. She was married to the late Everett H. Miller for 54 years before he died in 1989. Mrs. Miller is survived by a daughter, Carol L. Miller of Lebanon, N.H.; a son, Howard J. Miller of Woodstock; two brothers, Rodney Merriam of Northampton, Mass., and Hartland Merriam of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Candice Bacon of Mission, Texas, and Esther Gray of Lyndon; three grandsons, Dustin H. Miller of Indianapolis, Ind., Douglas E. Miller of Atlanta, Ga., and Duncan J. Miller of Boston, Mass.; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m., at the Hartland Congregational Church, 10 Station Rd., Hartland 3 Corners. , 75, of Corey's Mobile Home Park, Union Street, Littleton, passed away suddenly at the Littleton Regional Hospital, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. He was born in Notre Dame Des Boise, Quebec, Canada, son of Hermenegilde and Josephine (Raymond) Tellier. He left home at age 10 to work on a farm, and spent his entire lifetime farming and working as a logger. He lived in Lisbon for 25 years prior to moving to Littleton a year ago. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Frechette) Tellier of Littleton; two sons, Serge Tellier of Bradford, Vt., and Marc Tellier of Littleton; two daughters, Celine Presby of Lyman, and Christine Boutin-Davio of Lyndonville; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several brothers and sisters, all of whom reside in Canada. A visiting hour will take place at the Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel, from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, and funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. , 89, of 3405 South Wheelock Road, Lyndonville, passed away at his residence, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. He was born Sept. 22, 1913 in St. Johnsbury, the son of the late Arthur and Serena (Webber) Wilkins. Before retiring, he worked for 35 years at Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury, and operated a small farm in Lyndonville. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Brown) Wilkins of Lyndonville; five children, Pam Peters of Glover, Harold Wilkins Jr. and wife Thelma of Lyndonville, Gail Paquette of Lyndonville, Marcia Rainey and husband Douglas of Lyndonville, and Steven Wilkins and wife Pamela of Kirby; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Wakeham of St. Johnsbury. , 95, of Burke Hollow, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born May 24, 1907, in Delmont, N.J., the daughter of the late George and Rosetta (Stephenson) Armstrong. From 1924-1927 Joanna completed her nurses training at Newcomb Hospital in Vineland, N.J., becoming a registered nurse. She worked many years at the Millville, N.J., hospital. Joanna was a member of the Shekinah Chapter 82 Order of Eastern Star of New Jersey, where she was past matron and also served as past worthy district deputy. She was very active in her church, serving as Sunday School superintendent and teacher in New Jersey and West Burke for many years. She and her husband Fritz Witte moved from Dorchester, N.J., to Burke in 1965. Joanna enjoyed working in her flower gardens, hunting, fishing and camping. Survivors include two daughters, Esther Catling and husband Arthur of Medford, N.J., and Phyllis Culley of Millville, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Evelyn Errickson of Goshen, N.J., and Joann Thompson of Ocean City, N.J.; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz Witte, Oct. 9, 2002; her first husband, John W. Reeves; her second husband, Herbert W. Holst; a son, Roger Witte; three brothers, LeRoy McGill, Shetrick Armstrong, and Linwood Armstrong; a sister, Margaret Davis; and a niece whom she raised, Joan Dumbleton. , M.B., Ch.B., M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P., 75, of Nokomis, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in Weston Super-mare, Somerset, England, the son of Frederick W. and Hilda-M.V. (Woods) Turner. Dr. Turner attended King\'s School, Bruton, Somerset, England, later receiving his M.D. from the University of Bristol in Avon, England. He served his residency at the Post Graduate Medical School of Hammersmith Hospital in London. Upon leaving London he went to the University of Rochester in New York, earning his Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was also a reader at the Royal Free Hospital of the University of London. Dr. Turner served as head of gastroenterology at the University of Rochester, chief of medicine at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and as a consultant gastroenterologist for Bon Secours Hospital in Venice, Fla. , 74, of Stevenson Road, Barnet, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, where she had been a resident since 1995. She was born March 24, 1928 in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Harold and Eva Mae (Hines) Gadapee. She married Stuart "Otis" Stevenson Oct. 7, 1946. Mrs. Stevenson worked for the Barnet and Peacham school systems as a teacher's aide for several years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved music and could play the piano and keyboard by ear. Surviving relatives include her husband of 56 years, Otis Stevenson of Barnet; four sons, David O. and wife Marilyn Stevenson of Barnet, Richard B. and wife Paula Stevenson of Barnet, Norman S. and wife Penny Stevenson of West Barnet, and Frederick A. and wife Cheryl Stevenson of South Peacham; three daughters, Cheryl E. and husband David Slayton of East Ryegate, Virginia R. and husband Timothy Douse of East Ryegate, and Janice M. and husband Frank Page of Groton; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Graydon H. Gadapee of Eliot, Maine, Gordon H. Gadapee of Naples, Fla., Glendon H. Gadapee of East Haven, and Gerald H. Gadapee of East Ryegate; one sister, Edna E. Simons of St. Johnsbury; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by an infant brother, Donald Gadapee; and two sisters, Erma E. Baker and E. Ellen Remick. , 89, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 after a brief illness. He was a longtime resident of No. 32 Colonial Apartments. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Feb. 11, 1913, one of seven children born to Eugene and Anna (LaChance) Bedard. Roger was a retired insurance agent, principally for Allstate, St. Jean de Baptiste, and Prudential. He served in the U.S. Navy during world War II. Roger was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. He was a 70-year member and past grand knight of Sheridan Council 421 Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered for his love of the Yankees, the Canadiens, and his passion for selling raffle tickets for church endeavors, the VFW, the Legion and the Elks clubs, to which he belonged. Roger and wife Genevieve (Legendre) had been married for 63 years. Genevieve is now residing at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center, 601 Red Village Road, Lyndon, VT 05851. He is also survived by five children, Renette Bedard of Woodstock, Maurice Bedard and wife Lucille of St. Johnsbury, Marguerite Blodgett and husband Dale of Danville, Peter Bedard and wife Laurie of St. Johnsbury, and Michael Bedard and wife Susan of Dummerston; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis-Paul Bedard and wife Bette of Torrance, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Bedard of St. Johnsbury; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by three sisters, Sr. Juliette Bedard, Bertha Gauthier, and Yvonne Choiniere; and two brothers, Firmin and Robert. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Committal services will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 85, of New York City, N.Y., formerly of Woodsville, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002 at the Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., after a year-long illness. She was born April 3, 1917, in Bath, N.H., the daughter of Ora and Winnie (Chase) Tewksbury. Velma graduated from Bath High School, married, and moved to Boston, Mass., where she trained and worked as a nurse's assistant, and later in life as a head chef in the Rogerson Nursing Home. She lived in Boston for 35 years, returning to her beloved home state in 1975 upon her husband's retirement. Forever young, Velma had a lifelong compassion for animals, her home being a sanctuary at times. She loved gardening and being behind the wheel driving down country roads with their unexpected pleasures, adventures and surprises. She was above all a wonderful devoted mother and friend. Her husband Lawrence died in July 1991; their infant daughter Constance Jean died in January 1938; and their son Lawrence James died in December 2000. Three brothers and one sister also predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Salamone of New York City; a sister, Irene Cole of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. An informal gathering at her home, 17 Ammonoosuc St., Woodsville, will take place Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m.; then the family and friends will proceed to the Bath Village Cemetery for a burial service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Vadia C. Boudreau, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Woodsville, will officiate. Following the burial service a memorial remembrance gathering will follow at her home until 8 p.m. Contributions may be made in her memory to any struggling animal sanctuary.

, 84, of Orleans, died peacefully, Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Newport. He was born July 31, 1918 in Macon, Georgia, a son of Frank and Marie (Williams) Kelton. On Nov. 29, 1943, he married Louise Crawford, who survives him. Mr. Kelton was a veteran of World War II. He entered the U.S. Army, where he obtained the rank of major. He was employed as an administrator for veterans hospitals, retiring in 1975. He held memberships with the American Legion of Orleans and the Orleans Country Club, where he was a very dedicated member. Among his hobbies he enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, and he was a model train enthusiast. He loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Louise Kelton of Orleans; two children, Sandy Floersheim and friend Jim Ryan of Orleans, and Pam Smith and husband Randy of Orleans; five grandchildren, Major and Mrs. Bruce Floersheim, SFC and Mrs. Todd Floersheim, PO First Class and Mrs. Bryon Hicks, Melissa Durkee and Jonathan Phyfe, and Erik Smith and Bria Horton; several great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, B.J. Kelton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Wallace Kelton; and a grandson, Shawn Smith. Barbara was born in St. Johnsbury, Aug. 13, 1944, daughter of the late Howard and Eunice (King) Douse. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1963. Barbara was married in West Burke, Jan. 15, 1972, to Clayton Luce. Barbara was formerly employed at IBM and at Colchester and Winooski School Lunch Programs, and most recently at Vermont Toy and Hobby in South Burlington. She adored Volkswagens and was a Volkswagen collector, but mostly enjoyed her family. Barbara is survived by her husband of 30 years, Clay Luce; their three children, Michael Luce of South Burlington, Sandra Luce of Jamaica Plains, N.Y., and Marie Luce of Meredith, N.H.; a brother, Harold Douse and wife Corinne of Milton; two sisters, Evelyn Franz of West Burke and Linda Broome and husband Ray of East St. Johnsbury; her father-in-law, Harold Luce; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. 71, of 20 Meadow Lane, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a long illness. He was born in Littleton, a son of Victor and Catherine (McKenzie) Snell. He was a lifelong resident of Lisbon, graduating from Lisbon High School, Class of 1949. He was very involved with high school athletics, and was considered an outstanding athlete during his high school years. Stan spent most of his working life as a carpenter. He and his wife operated the Whistle Stop Drive-In Restaurant in Lisbon for about 18 years. He was a member of the Lisbon Lions Club, serving as King Lion and also as deputy district governor. He served for 30 years as a member of the Lisbon Fire Department, and was chief from 1967-1971, and during that time he was president of the Twin State Fire Mutual Aid Association. He also was one of the founders of the Lisbon Fast Squad, and served for several years as an EMT. Stan was a very active basketball official, and was a member of the International Referee's Association. He was a Special Officer for the Lisbon Police Department. Stan loved to play golf, hunt and fish during his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Marcia (Perham) Snell of Lisbon; a son, Victor Snell of Palmer, Alaska; a daughter, Marta Clark of Lisbon; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard. , 86, of Newport, passed away in Barton, Monday, Nov. 4, 2002. She was born in West Derby, March 14, 1916, the daughter of Edmund and Isabelle (Hill) LeClair. In 1953 she married Carroll Wilder, who predeceased her. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Brown of Derby; Hazel Fitzgerald and husband of Jacksonsville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her adopted son, Gerald Fedinow; a sister, Florabelle Bartlett; her brother, Gerald LeClair; and her companion, Robert Jones. Helen is remembered by her family and friends as a soft, gentle and cheerful woman who was simply delighted and appreciative of anything that was given to, or done for her. She loved cats and kittens of all makes and models but she especially adored her best friend "Skippy." Helen and her husband relished looking at sporty cars together, and in later years she enjoyed sporting one or two of her own. Her sister Margaret thought of Helen as both sister and mother, and she will live in our hearts and memories forever. He was born Dec. 21, 1954, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Fritz Anker Heisholt and Irene (Bloomberg) Heisholt. Prior to moving to West Barnet in 1982, he was a resident of Brookfield, Conn. He married Kimberly Burr Sept. 9, 1978. Mr. Heisholt was a D.H.I.A. technician for the Genex Corporation. He was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church in Groton. He enjoyed the aspects of his work which involved visiting with local farmers and driving country roads. When he wasn't working he was gardening, woodworking, cooking or spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his parents. A 1932 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, she was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and a member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 4 Olive Branch. , 80, of 157 Zermatt Drive, Winter Haven, Fla., and Lyndonville, formerly of North Hartland, Vt., passed away in Winter Haven, Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002. He was born Nov. 5, 1922 in Unity, N.H., the son of the late John and Clara (Cressey) Wright. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, John Wright; a twin brother, Frank Wright; and a sister, Eleanor Roberts. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Before retiring, he owned and operated the 7-E Mill in St. Johnsbury. He was a member of the Lyndonville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Washburn Lodge 92 F & AM in Danville. He was a former master of the lodge and district deputy grand master. He was a former president of the St. Johnsbury Country Club, and worthy patron of the Eastern Star in Danville. He had coached Little League baseball in North Hartland, and in Hartland he served on the fire department, as second constable, and as commander of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Velma (Morrison) Wright of Lyndonville and Winter Haven; a daughter, Sharon Needham and husband Warren of Bethel; five grandchildren, William "Bill" Young Jr., Kelly Young, Colleen Mayo, Christopher Needham and Matthew Needham; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lynda Gay of Newport, N.H.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. , 69, of Lyndonville, died at his home, Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. He was born March 1, 1933 in Lyndon, son of the late Frank W. Jr. and Thelma A. (Hoyt) Bull. Raymond graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1951 and spent the next three years at the University of Vermont, where he was a member of Delta Psi, studying to be a civil engineer. He then entered the U.S. Army and served as a surveyor. After his tour of duty he worked for Perini Construction and then for Merritt Chapman & Scott Construction, working on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Niagara Falls Power Project. He then worked for Penn-Central Railroad for many years, where he surveyed for railroad bridges and yards from Boston to Chicago. Returning to Lyndonville in 1973, Raymond purchased and operated Oscar's Bakery in Lyndonville until 1989. He was a member of the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville, the American Legion Post 30 of Lyndon, and the Masonic Crescent Lodge 66 F & AM of Lyndonville for over 25 years. He enjoyed mountain climbing and was a member of the Half Fast Mountain Climbers. Survivors include his dearest companion, Sandy Meyette of Lyndonville; two sons, Jason M. Bull of Lyndonville, and Kevin B. Bull and wife Nathalie of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; his daughter, Holly B. Bull and husband John Wall of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren; a brother, Charles M. Bull and wife Marlene of Boise, Idaho; one niece and two nephews. , 83, a lifelong resident of Middletown, Conn., died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at Harborside, The Madison House, Madison, Conn. He was born July 17, 1919, the son of Richard V. Daly Sr. of Middletown and Marie (Calamari) Daly of Deep River, Conn. Richard served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in Guam and China. He retired after a long career of service to his country from the Army Reserves after achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Connecticut at Storrs and attended Yale University, the University of Southern California, Wesleyan University and New York University. His career spanned several decades as a social worker and adult probation officer for the state of Connecticut, working in Middletown, Waterbury and Hartford before retiring in the 1970s. Beyond Richard's love of jazz and his extensive collection of vintage jazz records, his first love was for the game of golf. Richard and his wife Sylvia enjoyed many wonderful hours of play at the Edgewood Country Club of Cromwell, and the Lyman Meadows Country Club in Middletown. He was a prominent force in the promotion and development of the sport in Connecticut. He gave his time and knowledge to others as a teacher, mentor, men's club president, tournament director and as a father. He took a leadership role in the development of the Monday Golfer's Association in Middletown, from its humble beginnings at Joe Barone's Barbershop on Main Street in Middletown to the links of the Edgewood Country Club, which is now known as the Tournament Players Club of Cromwell, and later to the Lyman Meadows Country Club. Richard devoted 26 years as director or tournament director for the Central Connecticut Golf Assocation. What is most noteworthy of his service to the CCGA was his advocacy of the rights and privileges of all golfers. He believed it was important for all golfers to have the opportunity for recognition, no matter what their level of skill. He found great satisfaction in seeing the pride on the faces of all the CCGA champions as they received their trophy and were recognized by their fellow members. Richard was honored a few weeks before his death with a permanent CCGA Tournament trophy that will bear his name, The Daly Cup, which will continue the tradition he helped to create. Richard was predeceased by his devoted wife Sylvia (Giuditta) Daly, Sept. 20, 2001; and by his loving grandson, Richard V. Daly IV, who was caring for his grandfather until the time of his death on March 24, 2002. Richard is survived by two daughters, Mary Daly Scott of Barnet, and Elizabeth Daly Fedotowsky of Williamstown, Mass.; a son, Richard V. Daly III of Ivoryton, Conn.; six loving grandchildren, Emily and Tim Scott of Barnet; Raya Todd, Alexandra Fedotowsky and Michael Fedotowsky of Williamstown, Mass.; and Erin-Katherine Daly of Ivoryton, Conn; a brother, Thomas Daly of Fall River, Mass.; and two sisters, Mary Palumbo of Fall River, Mass., and Frances Sullivan of New Bedford, Mass. A memorial mass will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m., at St. John's Church in Middletown, Conn., where Richard was a lifelong member. Immediately following the service all friends and family will celebrate Richard's life at a reception at It's Only Natural, a vegetarian restaurant Richard enjoyed at the Main Street Market at 386 Main Street in Middletown. A private burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery for immediate family after the memorial mass. , 71, of Walpole, N.H., died early Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his home, surrounded by family, after a long period of declining health. He was born in Bath, Maine, Oct. 25, 1931, a son of Margaret Harris and the late Grant M. Harris, and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army as a company commander for a mechanized infantry unit in the European Theater from 1953 to 1957. Returning from service, he earned a master's degree in elementary education at Eastern Connecticut State University, and a CAGS in administration and supervision at the University of Hartford. He served in education for more than 37 years as a teacher and as principal at schools in Connecticut and New Hampshire, including serving as principal of Flanders Elementary School in East Lyme, Conn., from 1967-1984; Mildred C. Lakeway Elementary School in Littleton, N.H., from 1985-1990; and Walpole Elementary School in Walpole from 1990-1995. Grant received many awards and commendations throughout his career, including an Achievement Service Award from the Connecticut General Assembly. Mr. Harris also served in a variety of leadership roles in the communities where he lived, and for many years was director of Outward Bound Wilderness Camp for Boys in the White Mountains, and was a past president of the Niantic chapter of the Rotary Club. Mr. Harris was also a licensed captain for 100-ton motor passenger vessels on the Northeast seaboard, and piloted local ferries in New London, Conn. His sense of humor and devotion to children endeared him to many. His great love of the sea and the outdoors were demonstrated in his photography and writing. A devoted family man with a ready laugh and beautiful singing voice, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Mr. Harris was predeceased by his eldest son, also named Grant. He is survived by his wife Patricia; his mother, Margaret; his brother, Robert; and his children, Scott, Lauren, Keith, Ellen, Edward and Pamela, and their families, including 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Walpole. There are no calling hours. , 93, of Everett, Wash., a long-time resident of Wells River, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002 at the Everett Rehabilitation and Care Center. Mr. Masten had moved to Everett in April 2001, to be near his son Paul, daughter-in-law Louise Stanton-Masten, and grandson Eric Masten, following the death of his wife of 57 years, Jeanette Masten. He was born March 14, 1909 in St. Johnsbury, the son of Ernest and Gertrude (Jones) Masten. He was raised in Lyndon, and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1926. He was a proud alumnus of LI, attending many reunions, and was one of the last surviving members of his graduating class. He attended the University of Vermont, where he was a member of the Class of 1933 and of Phi Mu Delta fraternity. Mr. Masten joined the St. Albans Grain Company (later Wirthmore Feeds) in 1936, and remained in their employ for more than 31 years. From 1946 to 1967 he was manager of the Wirthmore store in Wells River. While employed in the Wirthmore store in Wolfeboro, N.H. in 1941, he met his future wife, Jeanette Jordan of Littleton. They were united in marriage Feb. 3, 1944, and enjoyed 57 years of devoted love to each other until her death in April 2001. He was a kind and gentle soul, most happy at his home of 50 years on Tullar Road in Wells River, gardening, watching his beloved Red Sox, and spending time with his "sweetie" Jeanette. While always a true Vermonter to the core, he enjoyed his time at Washington Oakes in Everett, particularly the caring and considerate staff, many rides through the countryside of Snohomish County, and the play of the Seattle Mariners, except when they faced the Red Sox. Mr. Masten was a World War II veteran, serving first on active duty during 1941, before being released upon passage of the "29-year" bill, and then being recalled in January 1942. He was a corporal in the 172nd Field Artillery Battalion of the First U.S. Army, landing on Utah Beach eight days after D-Day. He survived the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine and participated in the liberation of Europe. He was an active member of the Wells River Community for more than 50 years. As a member of the Wells River Congregational Church he served as clerk, trustee and deacon. Mr. Masten was a member of Crescent Lodge 66, Free and Accepted Masons, for more than 65 years, and was a member of many other Masonic orders: Mt. Sinai Shrine, Montpelier, and Corinthian Chapter 42, OES of Wells River, where he was a past worthy patron. Mr. Masten was predeceased by his wife Jeanette; two brothers, Gordon and Gerald Masten; and two sisters, Arlene Masten and Velma Masten Drown. He is survived by his son Paul and wife Louise Stanton-Masten of Lynnwood, Wash.; his grandson Eric Masten of Washington, D.C.; his brother and sister-in-law, Wendell and Abbie Masten of Lyndonville; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m., at the Congregational Church of Wells River. , 88, of St. Johnsbury, a longtime professor of English at Lyndon State College, died at the Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002. She was born in Tanta, Egypt, April 23, 1914, the daughter of Charles C. and Nellie (McAuley) Adams. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the American University in Cairo, Egypt in 1935; a master of arts in English from the University of Maryland in 1949; and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Maryland in 1953. She also attended the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy from 1936-1939 and became a registered occupational therapist. Ruth started her career as an occupational therapist at the psychiatric hospital in Norristown, Pa. from 1939-1942, moving to Towson, Md., doing the same work from 1942-1944. She was an instructor in English at Baltimore Junior College from 1954-1957, a tutor at St. John's College in Annapolis, Md. from 1957-1960, and taught English at C.W. Post College in Greenville, N.Y. from 1960-1967. Miss Adams arrived at Lyndon State College in 1967, teaching English and specializing in Victorian literature, the Bible as literature, and the philosophy of sport. She retired from LSC in 1979 and was made professor emerita of English. Other accomplishments and pastimes included her love of baseball, especially the Baltimore Orioles; gardening, knitting (baby blankets, socks and sweaters), and she was a very accomplished pianist, playing Brahms, Mozart, ragtime and jazz. She is survived by her nephews and nieces, Kenneth Adams of New York City, N.Y.; Christine Adams de Bolla of Cambridge, England; Charles C. Adams of Geneva, Switzerland; Patricia Cunningham of Toronto, Canada; Robert Adams Rice of Westford, Vt.; Douglas Bain, and David Bain; a brother-in-law, Arthur Lettieri of Putney, Vt.; a sister-in-law, Florence Adams of London, England; and several grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She leaves many friends including three dear friends, Bernie and Ila Sylce of Burke Hollow and Mary Bisson, a colleague at Lyndon State College. Ruth was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Adams Lettieri, and Eleanor Adams Bain; a brother, Charles Adams; and a niece, Adrienne Adams. Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no public visiting hours. 75, of Route 2 in East St. Johnsbury (P.O. Box 63, 05838), died at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. He was born in Potsdam, N.Y., Sept. 13, 1927, the son of Robert G. and Ruth (Carline) Hill. He was predeceased by twin sisters in infancy. Robert worked for Northern Petroleum as an oil burner technician and for a brief time at Arnold Automotive. He loved his association with the St. Johnsbury Lions Club, where he was a past president and recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award. He was a devoted husband for 49 years to Bernice "Betty" (Bailey), who survives him. Predeceased by a son, James, in 1978, he is survived by four children, Charles Hill of Boston; Rosemary Champagne and husband George of Mansfield, Ohio; Monica Hill and companion Sonja Hampel of Germany; and Shawn Hill and wife Charlene of Rutland, Mass.; four grandchildren, Nicol and husband Roy Shepard, Alanna, Chari, and Andre; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Cody and Ryan. Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury. Burial next to his son will be later in the week at Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston. , 80, of Heritage Heights, Concord, and Main Street, Lancaster, N.H., died Friday, Nov. 15, at Concord Hospital in Concord, N.H. She was born in Syringa, Va., the daughter of Lloyd and Mary (Mercer) Doughty. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1945. Mary was a graduate of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She was the owner and operator of Hortons store in Lancaster for 27 years. She was a past president of the Lancaster Unity Club, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lancaster, the ECW, and the Women's Veteran's Organization at Heritage Heights. She was also an avid bridge player. She loved to travel, read and do crossword puzzles. She was an avid user of the Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Lynn C. Horton, Oct. 9, 2002. She is survived by two sons, Dennis L. Horton of Gardner, Maine, and David R. Horton of Douglas, Wyo.; two daughters, Suzanne F. Williams of Arlington, Va., and Sara J. Mullarkey of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. , 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born March 3, 1911, in Albany, Vt., the daughter of Edward and Clara (Bumps) Williams. She lived most of her life in Hardwick, where she and her first husband, Thomas W. "Jimmy" Hall, owned and operated the Nancy Lee Fruit Market. Jimmy Hall passed away in 1968. In 1971, Olga married Joseph LaVertu, a local contractor. Joseph passed away in 1975. Olga was active in many local organizations, including the United Church of Hardwick, where she was secretary of Circle Three and served on the Church Executive Board. She was also a longtime member and secretary of the Hardwick Zoning Board and a member of the Fortnightly Club. Her extended family brought her much joy and comfort, especially in her later years. She loved children and they were drawn to her. She was the matriarch at all family get-togethers. She enjoyed the French Canadian traditions of the LaVertu family. Olga was predeceased by her two husbands; her son, James T. Hall; her grandson, Michael J. Hall; a stepdaughter, Connie Chapman; a stepson, Claremont "Joe" LaVertu; and two brothers, Earl and Cecil Williams. Surviving relatives include her daughter-in-law Natalie "Pat" Hall, grandson David Hall, and great-granddaughter Layne Hall, all of Shelburne; and stepchildren, Lorraine Hussey, Louise Gallant and Paul LaVertu, all of Hardwick; Jeanine Campbell of Montpelier, and Andrea "Toby" Herbert of Ticonderoga, N.Y. , 74, of Northumberland, NH, went to be with her Lord Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Dorothy was born Jan. 22, 1928 in Lunenburg, VT, the daughter of Omlah R. and Grace (Hamblet) Smith Sr. She lived most of her life in South Lunenburg, attending graded school in Gilman, and graduated from Lyndon Institute in Lyndon Center. For a time she was employed at Gilman Paper Company before going to work for New England Telephone as a telephone operator. She continued work there until she married Pierson R. Fogg, at which time she moved with him to Northumberland. Mr. Fogg predeceased her on Nov. 21, 1991. She was a longtime member of the Order of the Easter Star and the American Legion Fredonwarell Auxiliary, Unit 17, in Groveton. Family members include her daughter, Pamela Aievoli of Staten Island, NY; two brothers, Omlah R. Smith Jr. and wife Bertha of St. Johnsbury, and Edward H. Smith of Gilman; two grandchildren, Christina and Joseph of Staten Island, NY; two nephews, Dennis Ray Smith of St. Johnsbury, and Gary Omlah Smith of Gilman; one niece, Cindy Schultze of Benton, NH; several aunts and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S. and Canada. , 89, of Hardwick, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 19, 2002, at her residence. She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Skinner, Maine, the daughter of the late Dr. Arthur and Florence (Bartlett) Warren. She attended Worcester public schools and Hardwick Academy, graduating with the Class of 1931. She continued her education at Johnson Normal School, graduating in the Class of 1933, and in the late 1960s she graduated from Goddard College in Plainfield. On May 5, 1949, she married Wilbert Ernest Thompson in Montpelier. He died March 7, 1981. Anita dedicated her working career to educating children. She was employed at the Berlin Corners School, Hardwick Elementary and Hardwick Academy. She retired in 1977. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Hardwick, and the Altar Guild of that church; a member of the Riverside Chapter 32 O.E.S. and past worthy matron of that chapter; a live member of the Coral Chapter 16, O.E.S. of Morrisville, and a member of the Green Mountain Chapter O.E.S. of Cabot. She was also a member of the Hardwick Historical Society, Hardwick Senior Citizens, and Mackville Home Dems; she was active in the E.L.F. Program, a past trustee of the Jeudevine Memorial Library, and past president of the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick. She enjoyed poetry, wildflowers, and walking with her friend, Phyllis Zecchinelli. Survivors include a daughter, Valerie Ann Crowley and husband Kevin of Northfield Falls; a sister, Frances Beaupre and husband Roland of St. Johnsbury; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 88, of Newton Highlands, Mass., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002. She was born in Westfield, Vt., and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1932. In her younger years she worked at the University of Vermont, and she married Howard S. McCready, May 12, 1944, in Lyndon Center. She was a member of the Newton Highlands Congregational Church of Newton, Mass., and lived in Newton for 54 years. She was predeceased by her husband, and siblings Vera Watkins, Mildred Pearl, Alvah Edmunds and Merton Edmunds. Survivors include a son, John Edmunds McCready of Emeryville, Calif., a brother, Norris Edmunds of Brattleboro; a sister-in-law, Betty Meiklejohn; and many nieces and nephews. , 100, of St. Johnsbury, widow of Max D. Moulton, passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 18, 1902, in Groton, daughter of Aurele E. and Myrtie (Gardner) Legare, and attended elementary school there. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1921. After graduation she was employed at Maple Grove Candies, Goss Supply Co. and Charles Miller Co. She was married to Max D. Moulton in 1923. Two daughters were born to them, Maxine Ione, who died in 1934, and Marilyn, who resides in St. Johnsbury. For many years she and her husband operated Moulton's Snack Shop on Main Street, which was a popular spot for young and old, and still remembered by old-timers for their daily specials. After retiring from the Snack Shop they spent winters in Florida and summers at Lake Willoughby where they managed Willoughvale cottages for two years and enjoyed fishing. Viola was also active in helping Max while he was an appraiser and lister in St. Johnsbury. She enjoyed doing the book work involved in these jobs. After her husband's death in 1972, Viola went to work for Zuccaro and Willis Law Firm where she worked for 15 years, retiring at the age of 85. Viola enjoyed her 100th birthday party, celebrating with numerous family and friends. It was great. She was a member of the North Congregational Church, where she could always be seen helping in the background wherever she could be useful. She was an avid reader of the church reading list. She was also a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, always helping with suppers, etc. As her sight failed she especially enjoyed riding. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church with the Rev. Jay Sprout officiating. Committal will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Following the service, friends are welcome to join in the church parlor. , 78, of Irasburg, passed away at North Country Hospital Nov. 23, 2002. Glen was the beloved husband of Iva Chadburn for 51 years. They were married Sept. 19, 1951. He was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Hardwick, a son of Glen and Mary (Davis) Alger. Mr. Alger grew up in Lyndonville and attended Lyndon Institute. He and his wife owned and operated a dairy farm in Irasburg for 23 years. At the time of his death he resided on the land that their farm is on in Irasburg. He enjoyed gardening, sugaring and the out-of-doors. He had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Iva Alger of Irasburg; a sister, Ethel Jenkins of Carmel, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Vera Chadburn of Jericho; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Hilda Allard and Helen Hoyt. At Mr. Alger's request there will be no services. , M.D., 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Sutton, Nov. 22, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Ruth, a native of Switzerland; by his two sons, Jose Manuel of Lima, Peru, and Erik; a granddaughter, who lives in Amsterdam, Holland; and a sister, Ana Maria Lloyd who lives in New York City. Dr. Hermida was born in Seville, Spain, where his other three sisters, Amparo, Filomena and Rossario, along with the remainder of his family, still reside. Dr. Hermida did his undergraduate and graduate work in Seville, where he was awarded his medical degree. Following this, he spent several years in general practice in Seville before coming to the United States in January 1958 to undertake formal training in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. He was awarded an advanced psychiatric degree by the New York School of Psychiatry where he studied in its different academic and clinical locations. He then underwent his psychoanalytic training at the American University of Psychoanalysis where he won the first Karen Horney Scholarship for study in psychoanalysis. Subsequently he was elected a full member of the faculty as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Psychoanalysis. He taught at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis at the Karen Horney Clinic in the post-graduate Center for Mental Health. Dr. Hermida and his wife Ruth, a potter, moved to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 1983, where they both pursued their professions. For five years, under an agreement with Maine's Institute of mental Health, Dr. Hermida directed a special program for the rehabilitation of the chronically mentally ill. The family will hold an informal gathering at the Hermida home in Sutton for friends who wish to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Hermida on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2-5 p.m. Donations in Dr. Hermida's memory may be directed to Caledonia Home Health Care, Box 383, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.

, 88, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital following a brief illness. The son of Leroy and Beatrice (Weeks) Black, he was born July 4, 1914 in Bath, Maine. John was educated in Bath and was a member of the Class of 1935 at the University of Maine. He worked at the Bath Iron Works making ships for a time. He was an insurance adjustor at St. Johnsbury Trucking for 27 years. He married Alfreda Tanner July 4, 1941. To this union was born two daughters. John loved his family very much, they will miss him. He was a member of the St. Johnsbury Elks Lodge and The St. Johnsbury Players. He loved singing and sang in the choir at North Congregational Church. He was a Strong Republican. He loved to winter in Largo, Fla., where he was a member of a Christian Church. John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Alfreda Black of St. Johnsbury; two daughters, Barbara Black Destino and husband Robert of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Joan Black Palmer and husband David of Burlington; four grandchildren, Jason Palmer of Burlington, Susan Palmer of London, England, Christopher Destino of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Stephen Destino of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and three nephews. She was born Oct. 31, 1923 in Olean, N.Y., the daughter of the late John C. and Ethel (Brown) Lloyd. Nancy was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1991. She was a lifelong active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Olean, N.Y. For many years she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Volunteer Senior Transport Program, the Red Cross, the Audubon Annual Bird Count, and the Bird Club of Western, N.Y. For the past 10 months she resided in St. Johnsbury, making her home with her daughter, Sherri Fitch and husband Jon, and their children Ben and Margaret. Also surviving are Nancy's son, Douglas Beatty of Windsor, Colo. and wife Ronna, children Heather and Jayme and granddaughter Kaylee. A memorial service in Olean, N.Y., will be held at the family's convenience.

, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville. She was born in Hoboken, N.J., March 23, 1916, the daughter of A. Franklin and Marie (Monarque) Marvel. Edna grew up in New York City until the death of her mother when she was 5 years old. The following five years she lived in Seaford, Del., and she returned to New York during her teen years. In 1981 she retired from the E.I. DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford, Del., where she had worked as a lab technician for 41 years. After retirement she moved to St. Johnsbury, spending five winters in Surprise, Ariz. She later moved to the Sunset Home in St. Johnsbury, and after eight years moved to the Pines in Lyndonville. Her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the love of her life, along with the special friends from the Sunset Home and the Pines. Survivors include her daughter Charlotte and husband Russell Hutchins of St. Johnsbury; three grandsons, David and wife Robin Hutchins of Essex Junction, James Hutchins and wife Reinette of Waterford, and Robert Hutchins and companion Erin Linton-Wright of Mechanicsville, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Holly and Alex Hutchins of Essex Junction, and Samuel, Victoria and Jonah Hutchins of Waterford. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three siblings, Evelyn Jarman, Major Marvel and Marjorie McBride. Memorial services will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church, Thursday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Marshall officiating. Spring burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There will be no public visiting hours. The family would like to recognize the compassion and loving care which she received at the Pines, and the wonderful time spent at the Sunset Home. 80, of Grandview Drive, Lancaster, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster. Mr. Gilbert was born in Gilman, Vt., Sept. 20, 1922, the son of William and Roxa (Emery) Gilbert. Cap was raised in Stark and resided most of his adult life in Groveton. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign, and in the Korean War. He was employed for a time at Groveton Paper Company and later for the state of New Hampshire. For many years he worked in Northumberland at the Giant department store which later became Ames. He moved to Lancaster in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion Fredonwarell Post 17, Groveton, and the John W. Weeks VFW Post 3041, Lancaster. Family members include his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Cantell) Gilbert of Lancaster; two sons, David W. Gilbert of St. Albans, Vt., and Ronald J. Gilbert of Groveton; a daughter Terri L. Peterson of Lancaster; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Gilbert of Groveton, and a sister, Elaine Bedard of Groveton. Visiting hours will be held Friday afternoon and evening, Nov. 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. , 72, of the Baltimore Road, Baltimore, Vt., died Monday evening, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born Aug. 28, 1930 in Newark, the daughter of Leo and Ardell (Powers) Goodwin. She attended schools in Sutton, and later married Maynard A. Cox in Lyndon, on June 28, 1947. They owned and operated a dairy farm in Albany for 16 years, and moved to Baltimore in 1963, where they have made their home for the past 39 years. Her hobbies included reading, bird watching and doing jig-saw puzzles. Survivors include her husband, Maynard Cox of Baltimore; a daughter, Faith Goodwin of Springfield; two sons, Dan Cox and Jeff Cox, both of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Dale Goodwin of Sutton and Neil Goodwin of Troy, N.H., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Geraldine Gosley and Pauline Gleason; and two brothers, Donald Goodwin and Reginald Goodwin. A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Springfield Assembly of God Church, River Street, Springfield, with the Rev. Dana Longever, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield. Friends may call Friday at the Assembly of God Church, one hour prior to the service. , 75, of Chelmsford, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at Edith Nurse Rogers Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass. He was married to Mrs. Marjorie E. (Allen) Bean, with whom he celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on Feb. 28. He was born in Irasburg, May 2, 1927, the son of the late Winfred and Hazel (Taylor) Bean. In his youth Mr. Bean was a member of the Vermont National Guard before serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed on the U.S.S. Toolosahakie, Navigation Division, and then with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was selected for the Army Leadership School, and served as a training instructor at Camp Pickett, Va. He later transferred to the Occupational Forces in Munich, Germany. Mr. Bean's career was as an inspector and quality control engineer in the defense and space industry. He had his commercial flying license, and never lost his love for airplanes. He also enjoyed the bagpipes, which he played and taught for several years. Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Deborah and husband Kenneth diMontigny of Franklin, N.H., Cheryl and husband Christopher Nicholas of Pepperell, Mass., Donna and husband William Kenyon of Townsend, Mass., and Wendy and husband James Sullivan Jr. of Westford, Mass.; two sons, Glenn and wife Helen (Souliotos) Bean of Londonderry, N.H., and Thomas Bean of Lowell, Mass; two sisters, Elizabeth and husband Dale Pearson of Westfield, Mass., and Patricia and husband Arnold Garand of Waterford; three brothers, Calvin Bean of Utah, Benny and wife Marge Bean of Lyndonville, and Larry Bean of St. Johnsbury; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Winfred Earl Bean of St. Johnsbury. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Bedford V.A. Hospital Chapel in Bedford, Mass. , 90, longtime resident of Derby Line, passed away in Newport, Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002. She was born in North Danville Feb. 15, 1912, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Voyer) Emmons. Rita was a longtime parishioner and faithful member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. She enjoyed family gatherings and cooking, including making extra great meat pies. She had a great sense of humor, a large circle of friends and was a friend to residents of Michaud Manor for many years. On Nov. 21, 1938, Rita married Roland A. Roy, who predeceased her May 16, 1964. She is survived by her beloved children, Cynthia Field and husband Joseph of Hudson, N.H., Roland N. Roy and wife Sandra of Derby Line, Veronica Barnard and husband Ronald of Plymouth, Mass., Joan Roy of Derby, and Celeste Downing and husband Michael of Derby Line; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m., at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line, with the Rev. Yvon Royer officiating. She was born Nov. 6, 1942, the daughter of the late Henry and Dorothy (Hill) Olcott Sr. Before retiring she worked as a nurse's aide and social worker. She is survived by her husband, James D. , 62, of Hill Street, Danville, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital's emergency room. She was born in Lancaster, N.H., Dec. 5, 1939, the daughter of Wilbert and Catherine (Bolduc) Dawson. Valarie will be fondly remembered as a caring and giving member of the Danville community. For the past 12 years, she and Richard had been caretakers of the Joe's Pond Beach. She did amazing knitting, particularly children's sweaters, for family and friends, and mittens for the Santa Fund. She was known for her baked goods, especially her chocolate chip cookies, at the Joe's Pond Country Store. People didn't hesitate to make a special request for which she was only too happy to oblige. Valarie used to work as a lunch cook at the Creamery Restaurant. Prior to that, she worked at Hovey's Thrifty Shop. She is survived by her husband of nearly 36 years, Richard; her mother, Catherine Dawson of North Haverhill, N.H.; four children, Candace Bussiere and husband Louis of St. Johnsbury, Darla Ayer and friend Vickie of Hinesburg, Vt., Kevin Ayer and wife Roberta of St. Johnsbury, and Dennis Ayer and wife Joyce of Newport. She was a wonderful grandmother to her six grandchildren, Ashley, James and Sara Jane Bussier; Patrick Ayer; Michael Cordeau; and Kristie Pillsbury. She is also survived by two brothers, Malcolm Dawson of Charlestown, N.H., and Roger Bolduc of Lisbon, N.H.; two sisters, Olive Troughton and husband Al of Torrington, Conn., and Veronica Sheltra of Indiantown, Fla.; and a special aunt, Elsie Burbank and husband John of Laconia, N.H. , 99, of Benton Road, North Haverhill, NH and a former 72-year resident of Nyack, N.Y., died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at her son's residence in North Haverhill, where she had been residing for the last four years. She was born Feb. 7, 1903 in Vershire, the daughter of Clinton Melendy and Effie Bell Perkins. Her father owned and operated a feed store in West Fairlee and he later became a mail carrier in Randolph. Gladys worked for the Nyack YMCA in food service. She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Hartell in April of 1969; one son, Robert Hartell in June of 1999; two brothers, James and Stanley Melendy, and two sisters, Daisy Small and Fonnie Melendy Young. Surviving relatives include a son, Stanley C. and wife Donna Hartell of North Haverhill; one daughter, Gladys Hencke of West Haverstraw, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. , 92, of 100 Wake Robin Drive, Shelburne, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare Center in Burlington. Earl was born in Barnet, Nov. 19, 1910, the son of Don. L. and Lottie E. (Roy) Judkins. He was a graduate of McIndoe Falls Academy and a 1933 graduate of the University of Vermont with a degree in electrical engineering. During World War II he served with the Merchant Marines in the New York City area. On Aug. 6, 1951, Earl married Ernestine Martell, who predeceased him in April of 2002. Earl worked for Green Mountain Power Company for many years as a meter reader, retiring in the early 1980s as a senior engineer. He and Ernestine made their home in Montpelier before moving to Wake Robin in 1988. They enjoyed square dancing, gardening and taking cruises around the world. Surviving relatives include a very close cousin, Mrs. Marion Wilson of Hyde Park, and her children, Roy Wilson of Rochester, NY, Dorothy Cook of Hyde Park and Earl Wilson of Shelton, CT. Besides his wife Ernestine, Earl was predeceased by a cousin, Dean Judkins. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of West Barnet with the Rev. Dwight White officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 to 1:30 p.m. before the service. Burial will be held in the Barnet Center Cemetery in the spring. He was born in Lyndonville Mar. 13, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Effie (Stickey) Tower. Before retiring, he drove a truck for Lane Packing, Ralph Devereaux and French & Bean Company. He also owned and operated the Burke View Garage and Burke View Drive-in. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Miles) Tower of Lyndonville; two brothers and their wives, David and Thelma Tower of East Burke, and Maurice and Janet Tower of East Burke; two sisters, Shirley Allard of Lakeland, FL, and Betty-Lou Rexford and her husband Leslie of Lyndonville; and his sister-in-law, Rowena Miles of West Burke. Graveside services will be held in the Sutton Village Cemetery later in the spring.
