, 86, of Westmore, died peacefully on Feb. 28, 2008, in Barton. He was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Westmore, a son of Alvah and Carrie (Smith) Perkins. On Aug. 6, 1945, he married Jeanne Geoffrey who survives him. Perkins was a carpenter by trade and he owned and operated along with his wife the Perkins Hilltop Cottages in Westmore for over 50 years. He was town selectman and deputy Forest Fire Warden for many years. He was responsible for the Town of Westmore to receive its first street lights. He loved being in the woods, sugaring, hunting, skiing, fishing, Willoughby Lake, and he loved his children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful community minded individual and he loved joking with people. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Perkins of Westmore; by three children: Roy Perkins and his wife Claire of Westmore, Beverly Decker and her husband Robert of Westmore, and Kathy Joseph and her husband Larry of Murrieta, Calif; by four grandchildren: David Perkins and his partner Jenn Conley of Westmore, Penny Johnson and her husband Kimball of Westmore, and Ryan, and Jessica Joseph of Santa Rose, Calif.; by two great grandchildren: Chelsea Johnson and Samuel Perkins both of Westmore; by a brother Ralph Perkins and his wife Mabel of West Charleston, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers: Gerald, Joe, Clifton, Randolph, Harvey, and by two sisters: Eva Randall and Thelma Cole. , 73, of Barnet, Vt. adored husband, father and friend, died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, following an extremely brief illness. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Dec. 27, 1934, a son of the late Napoleon and Anna (Whitman) Descoteaux. Leo was the youngest of 13 children. He attended St. Gabriel Catholic School and graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School. On July 28, 1953, he was united in marriage to Ruth Esther Cheney of Barnet. Leo served in the Vermont National Guard for 38 years and retired with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. After his retirement he became a highly sought after skilled woodworker and furniture maker. During retirement, he was called upon by the State of Vermont to become a leader in the Vermont State Guard and attained the rank of Brigadier General. He was to have retired that position this coming May. Leo was also named Sub-Chief for the Koasek Abenaki Nation to which he and his family belong. He also looked forward to when the snow melted each spring because that meant that it was time to go fishing, one of his favorite past times. Leo was a leader who was truly honored and respected by the men and women in the National Guard who served under him, because that was how he treated them, with honor and respect. Leo is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Descoteaux of Barnet; two sons, Roland and wife Pok Yo of Michigan, and their children Nancy and Dennis, and Richard and his companion Debbie Valley of Barton, and his daughter Crystal; a daughter, Marina Utecht and husband Daniel of Florida, and daughters Elizabeth, Sarah and Ilia; three Great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Jonathan and Logan, and another due in June; a sister, Jeane Lamothe of St. Johnsbury; a sister in-law, Priscilla Hendricks and her companion Clyde Rivers of Sutton; a brother in-law, Louis Cheney and wife Irene of Peacham; and many nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by two sisters, Rita Davis and Beatrice Johnson; three brothers, Robert, Roland, and Henry Descoteaux; and other siblings that died in infancy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday March 3, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury with the Rev. Patrick Forman celebrant. Friends may call on the family Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in the Vermont Veteran's Cemetery in Randolph Center. , 93, of Vergennes, Vt., died at Ringer's Community Care Home in Vergennes on Saturday, March 1, following a courageous battle with ALS. Marian was born Oct. 6, 1914, to the late Ashley and Bertha Munger in the same house in which her mother was born. She was raised in Peacham, Vt. and graduated from Peacham Academy. On Aug. 9, 1941, she was united in marriage to Edgar (Norton) Strobridge in West Barnet, Vt. Following an extended wartime separation, Marian joined Norton for U.S. Army assignments in Louisiana before returning to civilian life in the Northeast Kingdom. When Norton was appointed as a Vermont Fish and Game warden, they moved to Poultney in 1947 and subsequently to Vergennes in 1956. Active in the community and rich in friends, Marian played the piano for the children's choir of the Vergennes United Methodist Church for more than 20 years and served as treasurer for the church and as bookkeeper for Howard LeBoeuf and Son contractors. Despite multiple hardships, including severe hearing impairment since childhood; loss of a daughter, Judith Ann, to leukemia in 1954; and loss of Norton to heart disease in 1974, Marian found fulfillment and joy in devoting her energies to her home, church, music, friends, extended family, and the Boston Red Sox, not necessarily in that order. Marian is survived by her son, Steven and his wife, Carol of Springfield, Va.; her son, Peter and his wife, Christina of Worcester, Vt.; grandchildren Daniel, Meredith, David, Ashley, and Lauren; and great-granddaughter Bailey. She is further survived by sister-in-law Judith Munger and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, daughter and husband, Marian was predeceased by brothers Stanley, Loring and Roy. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5 at Vergennes United Methodist Church, Main and East streets, Vergennes, Vt. , 79, of Prospect Street, Groveton, N.H., died Sunday morning, March 2, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, White River Junction, Vt. Mr. Batchelder was born in Lyndon, Vt., on Aug. 22, 1928, the son of Maurice and Carolyn (Fogg) Batchelder. Frank grew up in the East Haven and Burke, Vt., area and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Tech School. From 1951 to 1953, he served stateside with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Most of his life, he has worked as an auto mechanic, but for a time he was employed as an electrician including work at the East Haven Radar Station. His career as a mechanic included working with his father, Lyndonville Auto and Roberts Motor Sales where he was employed from 1962 to 1981. He then moved to Florida where he was employed at Palm Beach Lincoln Mercury. In 1995, his wife Ruth (Dexter) died and he returned to Groveton to be close to family. He was a Free and Accepted Mason, a member of the American Legion, former member of the Lancaster Sno-Drifters, and a former Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking in his workshop. Family members include three sons, Franklin A. "Bud" Batchelder Jr. and his wife, Tanya of Lancaster, Michael Batchelder and his wife, Nanci of Hendersonville, NC, Brian Batchelder and his wife, Suzanne of Groveton; seven grandchildren, Steven Batchelder, Jenilee Batchelder, Kristina Batchelder, Travis Batchelder and with Cathrine, Todd Batchelder, Shauna Watson and husband Jeff, Zackery Batchelder; four great-grandchildren, Coral Batchelder, Katie Batchelder, Kiley Watson, Jordan Watson; a brother, Donald Batchelder and his wife, Gladys of Waterford, Vt.; and a sister, Dorothy Kenison and her husband, George of Lunenburg. He was also predeceased by an infant brother Richard Batchelder. At Frank Sr.'s request, there are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. An announcement will be published at that time.

of Danville, Vt., passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at home at the age of 93. Born in Danville, March 1, 1914, she was one of two daughters born to Ernest and Nellie (Peck) Hartshorn. She was predeceased by her older sister, Irene Hartshorn Hedges of Shelburne, in 1986. After graduating from Danville High School, Thelma nursed at Littleton Hospital 1938-1948 and at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster 1948-1965. From 1965-1975, she took care of state children in Morrisville. After caring for Dr. Lattie Coor, the former University of Vermont president, she retired in 1978 and returned home to Danville. She coordinated and operated The Open Door in Danville, distributing clothes and food to the needy. Memorial services will be held Monday, May 19 at 11 a.m. A reception is being planned to follow the service. Her friend and pastor, the Rev. Henry Cheney, will officiate. , 79, died March 3, 2008, in Louisville, Ky., where she had been a longtime resident. She was born Jan. 15, 1929, in South Ryegate, Vt., a daughter of Eugenio and Emma (Rosa) Chiaradia. She was a retired secretary and was also a communicant St. Eugene's Catholic Church in Wells River, Vt. She was predeceased by her brother, Eugene Chiaradia; and her three sisters, Corrine Chiaradia, Olga Zampieri, and Vincenzia Tolimieri. Survivors include three nieces, Ann Maccini and husband Bob of Woodsville, Katherine Zampieri of Seattle, Wash., and Christina Lang and husband Kevin of Bow, N.H.; and many other nieces, nephews and extended family. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. in St. Eugene's Catholic Church, Wells River, Vt., with Father Philip LaMothe officiating. Burial in the spring will be in Pinehurst Cemetery, South Ryegate. Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart or American Diabetes Associations.

, age 78, of Riverside Drive, Campton, N.H., formerly of Whitefield, N.H., passed away on Friday, Feb. 29, at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, N.H. Mildred was born on May 8, 1929, a daughter to Chauncy and Theda (Green) Greenia, in Berkshire, Vt. She attended area schools. Mildred was employed as an inspector for Hitchiner Manufacturing for many years until her retirement. Mildred was an avid reader, enjoyed going to yard sales, making crafts, and spending time with her family and cat. Surviving family members include four children, Ellen Danyow of Campton, N.H., Laurent (Larry) Mayer, Jr. of Campton, N.H., Leo Mayer of Waltham, Mass., and Lori Norman of Paulden, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Tanya Murphy of Port Orchard, Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Caitlin Murphy; one brother, Lester Greenia of Knoxville, Texas; two sisters, Margaret LaPointe of Ellington, Conn., and Shirley Brault of New Canaan, Conn. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurent (Pepper) Mayer in 1990. A graveside service will be held in the Saint Matthews Cemetery in Whitefield, N.H., in the spring.

, age 88, passed away at his home in Waterford, Vt., on March 4, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. Sherman was born April 26, 1919, the fourth child of Harry and Mabel Mae (Thayer) Isham. He was predeceased by his four siblings, Rupert, Dick, Eleanor and Robert; and his son-in-law, Robert Fontecha. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Gloria (Lord); five children, Stanley of Omaha, Neb., Clinton of Plattsburg, N.Y., Jessica Fontecha of Waterford, Vt., Blaine of Essex Junction, Vt., and Steven of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Sherman was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and served as financial secretary for over 30 years. He graduated from Whitefield High School in 1937. He possessed a great love for automobiles all of his life. At the age of 16, he drove the Dalton students to high school even though he did not yet have his driver's license. Sherman was occupied as an auto mechanic when he was drafted shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. On Jan. 9, 1942, he began his military service at Fort Devens, Mass. He saw action as an anti-aircraft gunner in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, France and Germany. For his valiant service, he earned the Bronze Star for saving another soldier's life while under enemy fire. He was discharged on Sept. 16, 1945, after serving three years, eight months and eight days. He continued his military service in the National Guard as a section leader for three additional years between 1952 and 1955. On Nov. 11, 1945, he had a blind date with Gloria Lord, a friend of his best friend's girlfriend. Their date included their first of many ice cream cones together. They were married on June 26, 1946, in Littleton, N.H. He began his upholstering career at Lord's of Littleton working for his father-in-law Jesse. He moved to St. Johnsbury in 1955 to open his own upholstery business, Ideal Upholstery, with his cousin-in-Iaw, Ovila Bouchard. Later in life, he developed a passion for camping. He and Gloria spent much time camping from Florida to Maine. His grandchildren have wonderful memories of camping with their "Papa." A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial with military honors will be at a later date at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will held at the funeral home Wed. 6-8 p.m. The Knights are encouraged to assemble for prayers at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caledonia Home Health Care, P.O. , 93, of Woodsville, N.H., died peacefully at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, early Wednesday morning, March 5, 2008, with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 10, 1915, in East Boston, Mass., the only son of Olivio and Lucia (DeStefano) Rossi. Louis served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. On Nov. 25, 1950, he married Ruth (Blanchard). They lived in Arlington, Mass., where Louis worked for the town of Arlington as an iron worker, truck driver, and maintenance worker. They retired to Woodsville in the late 1970s. A loving husband and devoted father, Louis enjoyed working and sitting in his garden as well as watching and feeding a variety of birds. He also enjoyed his Italian music and was an avid Red Sox fan. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruth Rossi of Woodsville (52 Park St., 03785); three sons, Louis Rossi Jr. of Methuen, Mass., Peter Rossi and wife Dina of Methuen, and Joseph Rossi and wife Marsheila of Lyndonville, Vt.; a daughter, Rachel Zambon and husband Peter of Lisbon, N.H.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Vera Forni, and Dolcina "Dolly" Palangio. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Spring burial will be in Lyndon Center Cemetery.

, 61, died at his home in St. Johnsbury, Vt. on Feb. 28, 2008, of congestive heart failure. He had lived in St. Johnsbury, Island Pond, Vt. and in Colebrook, N.H., for the past 30 years. He was an injection-mold machinist by trade, and had lately worked as a caregiver for the Vermont Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He is survived by two sons, Andrew I. Kane of Shoreline, Wash., and Edward Kane of Island Pond; and a daughter, Shannon Kane of Island Pond. Martin was born Jan. 7, 1947, in Portland, Maine, to Martin E. Kane Sr. and Avis M. (Willette) Kane, both now deceased. His 10 siblings all survive him. They are brothers Daniel F., Edward J., Joseph T., William J., and John P., all of Maine; and Francis J. of Maryland City, Md. His sisters are Patricia K. Pennington of Portsmouth, N.H., Mary A. K. Trochim, of Ithaca, N.Y., Anne K. Duval of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Margaret K. Esten of South Portland, Maine.

, 88, formerly of Dalton, N.H., died Wednesday morning, March 5, 2008, at Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster, N.H. Flanders was born in East Barnet, Vt., on July 30, 1919, the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Berwick) Dennonville. She resided for a short time in East Barnet and was raised in St. Johnsbury, Vt. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and completed the business course there. She was well known from her years working at Moulton's Snack Shop in St. Johnsbury, a job she truly loved. Ruth married Forrest G. Flanders on Sept. 6, 1947, in Belmont N.H. Ruth was a homemaker and very active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Littleton, N.H., where she served as second reader and treasurer. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking and pickling for family and friends. She loved to dance and travel to visit with family and friends throughout Virginia, Tennessee, California and Indiana. She enjoyed many winters in Labelle, Fla., after retirement. Switzerland was one of her most memorable trips. She loved and enjoyed life and all of its simple pleasures and was grateful for everything provided daily by God. Family members include three daughters, Constance Flanders Costello of Whitefield, Joy Flanders Kobelt and husband Michael of Chico, Calif., Terri Flanders Hollinden and husband David of Ireland, Ind.; five grandchildren, Olivia Kobelt of San Diego, Calif., Greg Costello of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth Hollinden, Ben Brooks and Rachel Hollinden of Ireland, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Hannah Costello of Columbus; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by, her husband Forrest G. Flanders, in June of 2007. Two sisters, Josephine Falkenham, Ernestine Matthews and a brother Raymond Dennonville also predeceased her. Visiting hours will be held Saturday morning, March 8, from 10 to noon at Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. died peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, March 4, 2008, at the age of 70, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Sutton, Vt., Feb. 13, 1938. The son of the late Herman Homer Noyes, Sr. and the late Vera Bundy Noyes. Herman was a truck driver and worked on many of the highways in the Northeast. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 30. He will be lovingly remembered by his family, including his children, Debra Noyes, Michael Noyes, Brenda (Noyes) and Larry Walker, Leonard Gregorie, Timothy and Cindy Noyes, Lawrence Noyes, Leanne Messier, Michelle Hagman, twins Herman Noyes III and Kimberley and Howard Noyes and fiancee Kristy Knee, Crystal (Noyes) and Santiago Consuelo. Siblings include Robert and Mary Noyes, Arabelle (Noyes) Sheehan and John Sheehan, Gertrude (Noyes) Goodsell and Harry Goodsell, Ronald Noyes and Elaine Noyes, Helen (Noyes) and Kenneth Dwyer, Larry and Lois Noyes, Cindy Noyes, Joan (Noyes) and Ralph Colucci, Earl and Olive Morey, Robert and Esther Morey, Carlton and Jo Morey, Jack and Alice Caswell, Jim and Wilma Caswell, Priscilla Caswell and Bernard Fifield. , of St. Johnsbury, died of lung cancer at Vermont Respite House on March 3, 2008. She was born May 16, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Bruce Noll Coulter and Mary Burnet. She grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., on the beautiful campus of the Cranbrook School, where her father taught English and coached baseball and hockey. Anne's love of Vermont began in the summer of 1941, when the family bought an old abandoned farm in Shrewsbury, where they spent many happy summers "off the grid." After graduating from Brown University in 1956, Anne worked as a newspaper reporter, VISTA volunteer in Greenville, S.C., and staff member of the American Friends Service Committee in Baltimore. While there, she co-founded and lived in a Quaker commune called Toad Hall, and volunteered at the People's Free Medical Center. In 1971, she returned to Vermont with the wave of "back-to-the-landers." With the help of family and friends, old and new, she built a simple one-room cabin in Danville. Anne worked at Planned Parenthood and the Danville Health Center. She became a founding member of the St. Johnsbury Farmers' Market and the Danville Summer Singers. In 1983-1984, she studied massage at the Still Point Center School of Massage, then in Amherst, Mass., returning to St. Johnsbury in 1984, where she lived and practiced massage. All her life, Anne loved the out-of-doors. She loved nature observation, especially bird watching, kayaking on quiet ponds and rivers, snowshoeing, making things from vines and twigs, and making flower arrangements and garlands for her friends for special occasions. She also loved singing and ceremony around outdoor fires. She had a gift for friendship, and shared it freely with everyone she met. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Mimi (Mary) Gossett. She is survived by her beloved brother Bruce (1704 Bowman Ave. NW, Olympia WA 98502); niece Cathy Walker; nephews John Gossett of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, and Walter Gossett of Port Charlotte, Fla., and their families. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held May 16, Anne's birthday, at North Church in St. Johnsbury at 4 p.m. followed by a potluck dinner. Instead of flowers, Anne would be pleased if you wish to make a contribution to the St. Johnsbury School summer camp and after-school activity fund. On Nov. 26, 1955, he married Barbara Morse who survives him. Mr. McAllister was employed by Tivoly for 22 years. Before that he was engaged in dairy farming. Born March 4, 1919, in Kirby, she was the daughter of Jesse and Mabel (Barnes) Hosford. She attended schools there. She was married to William James Pickett in St. Johnsbury. Most of their married life had been spent in Groton. He died Jan. 16, 1965. She later lived in Woodbury and since 2000 has resided in Williamstown with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and John Hodgdon. She had helped her husband in the operation of their farms. Flower gardening, crocheting, playing Bingo, cooking, her soap operas, wrestling and entertaining her family were her special interests. Survivors include her daughters, Hazel Melendy of Perkinsville, Betty Howard of Swanton, Nancy Ulery of Wells River, and Mary Hodgdon of Williamstown; two sons, Robert Pickett of Woodbury, and Ralph Pickett of Greensboro Bend; 26 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry Hosford of West Hartland; and nieces and nephews. Beside his parents, she was predeceased by three sons, Earl, William and John Pickett; and two daughters, Shirley and Virginia Pickett; a brother Ralph Hosford; and three sisters, Betty King, Ella Spiegel and Agnes Basnard. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Later interment will be made in the Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

, 75, of Island Pond, Vt., died suddenly March 8, 2008, at her home in Island Pond. She was born May 21, 1932, in Island Pond, a daughter of Vanroy and Blanche (Elliott) Moulton. On Nov. 25, 1954, she married Richard Hannux who predeceased her in 1999. Mrs. Hannux was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary 2882 of Island Pond and the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department. She enjoyed outings with her friends. She is survived by a son, Richard Hannux and his wife Corinne of Island Pond; two grandchildren, Shawn Hannux and fiancée Jennifer Williams and Heather Hannux and fiancé Cody Duckless; and by a great-granddaughter, Harlee Elizabeth Hannux. She is survived by a sister, Beth Ming and her husband William of Island Pond; and by a sister-in-law, Marion Cole of Island Pond. She was predeceased by two brothers, Leroy and Neil; and by two sisters, Vilda Moulton and Donna Gonyaw. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday March 13, 2008, at the Congregational Church in Island Pond with the Rev. Allen Magoon officiating. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, East Charleston.
