LANCASTER, N.H. - As a long and anxious day waiting along the Israel River was coming to an end Sunday, the family of a man swept away in the fast current after saving the life of a child said a prayer. "I stood there and I prayed to the river," said Dee Rice, the grandmother of Randall Brewer, 27. "I asked God to show us where Randy was and it wasn't a few minutes later that they found him," she said. Brewer's large and extended family remembered the man who left home some time ago to work in St. Johnsbury, Vt., but returned to be closer to his loved ones just two months ago. They remembered Brewer as the type of fellow who would do anything for anybody, whether he knew the person or not. "He didn't like to see anyone in trouble," said his step father, Mike Bishop. "He would do anything he could to help, even if it took his own life." Monday, Brewer's large and extended family, gathered around the kitchen table, spilling into the living room, and talked about a young man who gave his life during the weekend to save a child in trouble. Just two days earlier, at the end of a spring day, Brewer was visiting with some friends along a stretch of the Israel River, which flows through downtown Lancaster on its way to the Connecticut River. As his family explained, the group included a number of people of varying ages, including an 11-year-old boy and that boy's older brother, who was a friend of Brewer's. After a long winter, Saturday was warm and sunny and the talk turned to swimming, as they were at a part of the river known as the Wall, which has long been a popular swimming hole in town. "They talked about how they weren't going to go in because it was so high," said his grandmother. But the 11-year-old, who had a cast on his arm, jumped into the swift moving river and was immediately in trouble. "Randy could see he was in trouble and he never thought twice," Rice said. "There was a kid in trouble that needed help and Randy was there." The warm day fed the normally placid river with melting snow and was running high, spilling over its banks as it got closer to the Connecticut River. Officials on Sunday said Brewer was able to push the child to safety even as the current was pulling Brewer along, before pulling him under the water. From the time the call was put in for help just before 8 p.m., firefighters, volunteers and conservation officers searched the river and its banks, suspending the search at about 3 a.m. Sunday and resuming it four hours later. "I was out there until 2 to 3 o'clock and then I came home," Bishop said. "I came back at 5 before anyone else." Fish and Game conservation officers used a drag line along the stretch of the river down from where Brewer had last been seen. They were later joined by a dive team that searched the murky water for several hours. As the sun was going down, officials were planning to return and resume the search on Monday morning. The dive team had come up and the boats were ready to come out of the water. All that remained in the river was an underwater camera. "We needed him to be found - we couldn't go through another day of this," Bishop said. So, the family - including his mom, Della, and aunts and uncles and friends - quietly began praying, Rice said. Brewer's body was discovered about 400 yards downstream from where he jumped in, in about 7 feet of water. Monday, his family made plans for his funeral and remembered with some tears and some laughs the man they once called 'Keebler.' "Like the cookie," Rice said. "He was a tiny guy and he looked like an elf. So, we used to call him Keebler." Brewer had left home a while ago and moved to St. Johnsbury, Vt., where he worked at McDonald's and KFC and even picked up the odd babysitting job. "He loved kids and he loved cooking," Rice said. But he moved home in mid-February to be closer to his family. "We were very close," said his mother, Della Bishop. "I guess because he is my oldest. He'd always give me a big hug - he is always in my thoughts - and he always had a big smile." Calling hours for Brewer will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster and a small funeral service is planned for Friday. He will be laid to rest in Newark, Vt., next to his grandfather. His family is comforted by Brewer's many friends and as sad and as courageous as his last act was, they never expected anything less from him. "It's what we would expect him to do," Rice said. "Someone needed help and he was there."
