, 100, of 293 U.S. Route 2B in St. Johnsbury, died at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, Tuesday morning, July 24, 2001. He was born in New York City on Nov. 3, 1900, the son of Patrick Bernard and Mary Rose (Murphy) Dyer. He married Catherine Weldon July 22, 1933. He was predeceased by their son Brian in 1987. Mr. Dyer was a 1919 graduate of Craftsbury Academy and a 1924 graduate of the University of Vermont. There, he received a bachelor of science and a masters degree in education. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity and was a quarter-miler on the UVM track team. He was in Army ROTC and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve upon graduation. Dan's work experience started as science teacher and basketball coach at Cambridge High School. He then became teacher and basketball coach and alter principal at Craftsbury Academy. In 1939 he became principal of Essex Junction High School, where he was also the basketball and baseball coach. In 1950 he became superintendent of schools for the Essex-Caledonia school district, retiring in 1966. He was asked to come out of retirement a year later to become principal of the Adams and Summer Street schools in St. Johnsbury. After his second retirement, he was supervisor of the Manpower Training Program and later of the Neighborhood Youth Corps. He was also an instructor in the Adult Education Program in St. Johnsbury. He held the offices of president of the Vermont Headmasters Association, president of the Champlain Valley Teachers Association, president of the Vermont Retired Teachers Association, chairman of the executive board of the St. Johnsbury Area Agency on Aging, a member of the Senior Law Project, and president of the UVM Green and Gold Club. The University of Vermont honored him with two prestigious awards, the Community Leadership Award in 1978, and the Distinguished Service Award in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Weldon) Dyer of St. Johnsbury; one son, Barry James Dyer and wife Katherine (Coburn) of Sun City Center, Fla.; one daughter, Clare Louise Dyer of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Merrie er of Cazenovia, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Laura Allendorf Fenninger and husband Randy of Vienna, Va., Jeanne Allendorf Alexander and husband Peter of Derby, Grant Michael Allendorf and wife Susan of Underhill, Vt., Daniel Coburn Dyer of Orlando, Fla., Margaret Moore Dyer of Milwaukee, Wis., Thomas Brian Dyer of Boston, Mass., Jason Streeter Dyer of Cazenovia, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Danielle Allendorf, John and Thomas Fenninger, and Catherine and Elizabeth Alexander; five nieces, Joan Moffatt and husband James of Craftsbury, Maureen Dyer of Burlington, Sharon Dyer of New York, N.Y., Deanna Eastman of Ashland, Mass., and Mary Elizabeth Hamm of Rushville, N.Y.; one nephew, John Hamm of Clark, N.J.; three cousins, Nora Finnegan Terrien of Burlington, Martin John Murphy and wife Betty of Newport Center, and Maj. Gen. Francis Nye, ret., and wife Maureen of Albuquerque, N.M. He was predeceased by six brothers, Frank, Fred, Harry, George, Woodrow and Martin; and one sister, Kathleen Hamm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 28 at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, where he was a parishioner since 1950. Following the funeral, friends are invited to meet with the family downstairs in the church hall. Committal services are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell. , 79, of Melody Lane, Woodsville, N.H., died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, N.H., following a period of failing health. Mr. Lang was born April 8, 1922, in Monroe, N.H., the son of Julius and Bertha (Robinson) Lang. He was a lifetime resident of the area. He graduated from Woodsville High School, Class of 1940, where he played on one of the last football teams at the school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Ruth F. Galligan of Attleboro, Mass., in April 1946, and they had four sons. They were legally separated in 1965. Mr. Lang worked for Boston & Maine Railroad on the section crew as a trackman. In 1954 he was elected as a union representative for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees for the state of New Hampshire. He held this job for 18 years, retiring from the Boston & Maine on July 25, 1972. "Newt" was a 56-year member of the American Legion Ross-Wood Post 20, Woodsville, N.H., and was awarded a life membership. He has held most of the offices of Post 20 and District 8, including commander. He also held various chairmanships in the American Legion Department of New Hampshire. He was past Chef de Gare of Voiture 158 of Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, and has been a member for 47 years. He was state treasurer for the Blinded Veterans Association, Regional Group of New Hampshire. Newt had been an active member in the Woodsville-Wells River Fourth of July Committee since its inception in 1980, and was Grand Marshal of the 1993 Fourth of July parade. He was a charter member of the Republican Committee of Haverhill, N.H. He was predeceased by a sister, Nora Davidson, Jan 31, 1971; and by his companion, Arlie Covell, May 28, 2001. Mr. Lang is survived by four sons, Robert J. Lang and wife Shirley of Piermont, N.H., Thomas C. Lang and wife Pat of Woodsville, Captain Paul E. Lang and wife Brenda, U.S. Army, of Barrington, N.H., and Stephen G. Lang of Woodsville; five grandsons, Timothy and his wife Tonya of Park City, Ill., Jonathan of Piermont, N.H., Nathan Lang of Woodsville, and Daniel and Andrew Lang of Barrington, N.H.; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Lang of Park City, Ill.; one nephew, Gerald Davidson of Gilford, N.H.; and one niece, Marjorie Page of North Haverhill, N.H. Friends may call at the Congregational Church, Friday, July 27, from 3 to 7 p.m. Marion, a dearly loved mother, is survived by her children and their spouses, Gerry Wing and his wife Barbara of Hale, Mo.; Alan Wing and his wife Ginny of Island Pond; and Lois Boylan and her husband Joe of Shrewsbury, Mass. Marion is treasured by her five grandchildren and their spouses, Loriann (Wing) Ouellette and husband Jon of Bedford, N.H.; Jodi (Wing) Flanagan and husband Dan of Burke; Andrea (Boylan) Sanderson and husband Mark of Virginia Beach, Va.; Steve Wing of Newark Valley, N.Y.; and Sarah (Boylan) Cavanaugh and husband Sean of Northboro, Mass. Marion's four great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Katherine Ouellette, Yale Flanagan and Caleb Sanderson held a special place in her heart. Marion is also survived by Milton and Lucille Wing of Newport and Arline Wing of Lyndon. Marion was born in Island Pond, Aug. 2, 1908. She graduated from Brighton High School and Lyndon College, where she earned hear teaching degree. She taught in Plainfield, Marshfield and Derby Line prior to her marriage to Dale on Dec. 28, 1938. After her marriage, she devoted her life to her husband and subsequently her children. She and her husband purchased a home on Lake Street in Island Pond next to her parents, Myron and Annie (Norton) Waterman. Her sister, Gladys (Waterman) Lindsay and her brother, Darrell Waterman, who predeceased Marion, also lived on Lake Street. Thus, Marion spent most of her life on Lake Street surrounded by the love of family. In 1965, after raising her children, she returned to Lyndon College to earn her teaching recertification. She spent several years thereafter teaching remedial reading in Holland, Charleston and Island Pond, and later became a substitute teacher, before retiring in her 70s. Marion was always an active member of the First Congregational Church in Island Pond, where she taught Sunday school for many years, worked on church suppers and activities, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of the Brighton Post 80 American Legion Auxiliary and the Random Post 2309 VFW Auxiliary. Marion was one of the original residents of the Brighton Senior Housing (Sunshine Manor), moving in the week it opened. She kept her lifelong view of the lake, enjoyed the camaraderie with the residents and townspeople, and made Sunrise Manor her adored second home for 19 years. She was treasurer for the Senior Center's social events for many years. Not until January 2001 did Marion leave Island Pond due to failing health, to reside at the assisted living facility at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyndon. Although she deeply missed Island Pond, she found the residents, staff and the hospice volunteers who visited with her at the Pines to be wonderful, caring people. Marion's first love was her family. Her children could not have had a more devoted and loving mother. Even when ill her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought a sparkle to her life. She enjoyed life to the fullest and loved to strike up a conversation with people of all ages, particularly young people. Walking, even on the coldest of days, and riding her exercise bike were two of her fondest activities. She did this until the last few months of her long life. While living on Lake Street, Marion spent many hours with her children at the beach. She loved swimming and boating. She spent much time playing basketball and jumping rope with her grandchildren even though she was then a senior citizen. Marion was competitive - she loved a challenging game of croquet or cards. She spent many hours canning and freezing vegetables from her husband's beautiful and bountiful garden. She always enjoyed having her family and their friends to her house for one of her home-cooked meals. Marion could be seen driving her senior citizen friends, many younger than she, to medical appointments, the grocery store, church, or just for a ride. She was proud of her car and driving ability and taught her children and grandchildren how to drive. These are just a few of our many wonderful memories of Marion Wing. Her family and friends will greatly miss her.

, 85, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Mrs. Hannux was born in St. Johnsbury, Aug. 8, 1915, the daughter of Alfred Allen and Melvena Elizabeth (Steadiford) Guyer. In East Barnet, she attended grammar school, and went on to McIndoes Academy in McIndoe Falls. She was employed at Mellon Quincy, Whitefield; Spalding Inn, Whitefield; Sweet Wood Handle, Littleton; as a housekeeper in Florida; and for 13 summers at the Paquette Motel, Twin Mountain. For many years she worked with the Whitefield Senior Meals Program. Surviving family members include three children, Dorothy Stiles Brauda of Hortense, Ga., Priscilla Stiles Dunaway of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dale P. Stiles of Wheeling, W.Va.; three stepchildren, Viola Hannux Dezan of Woodsville, Marion Hannux Boutin of Shelburne, N.H., John D. Hannux of Rochelle, N.Y.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a half brother, Raymond Guyer of Litchfield, N.H. She was predeceased by two husbands, Percy Stiles and Richard S. Hannux. She was a member of the Community Baptist Church, Whitefield, where she was a past deacon and past president of the 20-40 club. She was a 7th degree Granger with over 50 years of membership. She served as past master, was slate H.E.C. director, and served over 20 years on the State Committee. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church in Whitefield. The Rev. Clifford Vendt, pastor, will officiate. , 78, of Gorham, N.H., passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, of injuries received in a motorcycle accident. He was born in Lancaster, N.H., April 16, 1923, the son of Nathan B. and Leona (Masters) Currier, and lived in Gorham, N.H., most of his life. Mr. Currier was the founder of the Currier Corporations. He retired in 1988. He enjoyed motorcycling and racquetball. He was a member of the Christian Science, Mother Church, Boston, Mass., and the Christian Science Society in Lancaster, N.H. He spent some of the winter months in Fort Pierce, Fla. Members of the family include his wife of 55 years, Marilyn (Mills) Currier of Gorham, N.H.; two sons, Dennis Currier of Gorham, N.H., and Douglas Currier of Randolph, N.H.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. , of 90 Mt. Vernon St. in St. Johnsbury, passed away at home, Wednesday, July 25, 2001, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. He had his loving wife by his side. Norman was born Feb. 22, 1926, in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, the son of David and Blanche McCorkill. He married Gabrielle Santerre, the love of his life, in 1951, and moved to St. Johnsbury from Farnham, Quebec. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for 42 years. After retiring, he worked for four years as deputy sheriff for the Caledonia County Sheriff's Department. Norman was an active member of the Elks Club in St. Johnsbury until the time of his death. Norman was an avid golfer. He enjoyed spending his winters in Florida with his wife, and loved his time with his children and grandchildren. He was a good husband and father and will always be remembered for having a heart of gold. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gabrielle; his son, Rod McCorkill and his wife Susan of Enfield, Conn.; his daughter, Sharon Draper and her husband Richard of Morrisville, Vt.; four grandchildren, Ben and Megan McCorkill, and Lindzey and Chelsea Draper; and his brother, Carl McCorkill of Chateauguay, Quebec. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury. Interment will be in Farnham, Quebec, at a later date. There will be no visiting hours. , 82, a longtime Hardwick resident, died peacefully, Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the Greensboro Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of Alfred F. and Blandine (Poirier) Lambert. He attended Haverhill public schools, and Haverhill Trade School, studying printing. On Jan. 30, 1942, he married Leanne Marie Rochette in Greensboro Bend. Al first served his country in the National Guard. He later entered the Army Air Corps on Oct. 13, 1942, in Boston, Mass. He received a Good Conduct Medal and an American Theatre Campaign Ribbon for his efforts. His military education included the study, aircraft instruments, engines, hydraulic and electrical systems, maintenance, and inspection of aircraft. Corporal Lambert was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945, at Westover Field, Mass. In his earlier years, Al was employed as a final assembler for the Du Grenier Machine Shop in Haverhill, Mass. He later was a spinner in the family owned and operated shoe factory Pacific Mills in Lawrence, Mass. In 1947 he and his family moved to Vermont, making their home in Greensboro Bend for 10 years and later moving to Hardwick, where he made his home for more than 44 years, during which time he owned and operated Al's Esso Station. He retired in the early 1980s. He was a member of St. Norbert's Roman Catholic Church in Hardwick, a fourth degree knight of the Brownson Council Knights of Columbus 1568 of Hardwick, a member of the Hardwick Kiwanis Club, and a past lieutenant governor of the Vermont Division Kiwanis Club, as well as a past member of the Hardwick Fire Department. He enjoyed daily drives in his car, and visiting with friends at the Village Restaurant in Hardwick. Survivors include two daughters, Leona Sholan and Theresa L. Davis, both of Hardwick; three sons, Daniel Lambert of Barre, David Lambert of Hardwick, and Donald Lambert of Littleton, N.H.; a sister, Leona Lajoy of Haverhill, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Leanne, Aug. 23, 1995; two brothers, Lionel and Edmond; and two sisters, Cecile and Alma. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. A prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m., at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Greensboro Bend, with the Rev. Michael Augustinowitz, celebrant. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Michael's Cemetery. , 69, of 16 Lyndon Terrace, Lyndonville, passed away at the Veterans Medical Center in White River Junction, Sunday, July 29, 2001. He was born Aug. 26, 1931, in Rutland, the son of the late Howard and Edna (Penny) Jasmin. He served in the U.S. Army. Before retiring, he worked as a car salesman at the former Thompson Chevrolet Dealership in Littleton, N.H. He liked hunting, fishing and telling special stories to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Gleason) Jasmin of Lyndonville; his daughter, Julie Jasmin of Randolph, Mass.; his son and his wife, Clayton and Marla Jasmin of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Maria and Clayton Jasmin III; a son-in-law and his wife, Steve and Gina Noyes of Lyndonville; a special aunt, Ellen Booth of West Bridgewater, Vt.; a special cousin, Mary Jenne of West Bridgewater; a step-daughter and her husband, Debbie and Mike Noyes of Lyndonville; his step-grandchildren, Jason Noyes, Rose Noyes, Lisa and David Bartolotta, and Jennifer and Bill Locke, all of Lyndonville, and Kara Lawrence of Lyndonville, who was "like a granddaughter" to him; and his step-great-grandchildren, Bradi and Spencer Bartolotta, Sebastein Stone, Chandler Walters, Sierra Walters, Rose and Jeff Walters, Dylan Locke and Courtney. , died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at home in Lyndonville following a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born in Newport Feb. 16, 1954; his parents were Katherine and Rene Beaudry of Irasburg. Bob was employed at Northeast Kingdom Youth Services and Newport Plastics until he became ill. He also worked at Palmer Brothers, Northeast Kingdom Community Action, Ethan Allen, Black River Lumber, and Ames. Bob was very skilled at every job he undertook, and he went the "extra mile" to help out other employees and friends at every opportunity. He was fond of fishing, drafting, building renovations, and computers. He was especially skilled at photography and woodworking, including constructing and finishing furniture of all kinds. Bob was a quiet man, very loyal to his friends, and always available to lend a helping hand. He could turn the toughest job into a humorous moment, and he was generous without any expectation of fanfare or recognition. Some of his accomplishments included earning his adult diploma through Lyndon Institute and completing his first year toward an associates degree at Community College of Vermont. He was predeceased by his parents, Katherine and Rene Beaudry. Survivors include his brother, Albert Beaudry of Irasburg; his sister, Brandy (Pauline) Wright of Newport; a daughter, Lori, of Troy; and three granddaughters. He also leaves his close family of friends, Elaine Pelkey of Lyndonville, Bob and Kay Perkins, also of Lyndonville, and their extended families. 83, 270 Cliff St., St. Johnsbury, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born in Acton, Mass., Jan. 29, 1918, the daughter of Theodore and Martha (Clough) Chamberlin. Ms. Chamberlin was a lab supervisor for H.P. Hood Company for 35 years, in Maine, Vermont and New York. She was raised in Horsemeadow, North Haverhill, N.H.; graduated from Woodsville High School; graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1940; was a member of the North Haverhill United Methodist Church; an avid golfer, Red Sox fan and skier, taking her last ski run at Burke Mountain at the age of 80; she did volunteer work at the library at NVRH after her retirement. She enjoyed spending summers at her cottage on Harvey's Lake in Barnet. She was predeceased by her brother, Phineas Chamberlin of Keene, N.H., Jan. 27, 2000. Survivors include two nieces and special friends, Jane Bartrum and husband Dr. Royal and two children, Ian and Nathaniel, of East Montpelier, and Deborah O 'Meara and husband William and two children, David and Allen of Swanzey, N.H.; James and Roxanna Morrill of North Haverhill; Elizabeth Morrill and friend Tim Card of North Haverhill; and Kathleen Scott of St. Johnsbury. , 78, of East St. Johnsbury, passed away at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. She was born Sept. 16, 1921, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of the late Rupert and Ellsie (Bundy) Carr. Before retiring, she worked as the assistant administrator at the former Darling Inn Nursing Home in Lyndonville. She attended school in Everett, Mass.; St. Johnsbury Academy; and graduated from Wayland High School in Wayland, Mass., Class of 1939. She was a member of the Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury; the Vermont Historical Society; Vermont Folk Lore; a charter member of the Moose River Depot Club; a plus member of the 251 Club; and co-chairman of the first Green-Up Day in Vermont. In 1969, she became one of the first five home health aides in Vermont. She was also very active in the East St. Johnsbury school. She is survived by her son-in-law, David Lafond of East St. Johnsbury; her grandchildren, Tish and John Iglesias of Westfield, Mass., Michael Flanagan of St. Johnsbury, Brenda and Reg McKinstry of North Concord, Penni Cleverly of St. Johnsbury, Patrick and Doris Kilburn of Springfield, Jane and Milton Suliveres of St. Johnsbury, Tim Lafond and Raelyn Chase of East St. Johnsbury, Beth Lafond and Rick Bolye of Kirby; 16 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. 66, of Glover, passed away early Sunday morning, Sept. 2, 2001, at his home in Gl his family. He was born in Beebe, Vt., on Feb. 17, 1935, the son of Horace and Charlena (Brooks) Brown. Phil served in the U.S. Navy during the Korea Conflict and was the youngest member of the SeaBees to go to Antarctica and establish the bases on Little America under the command of Admiral Byrd. Phil kept a close relationship with some of his SeaBee friends, and Scotti, Mike and Dave would make a point to come and visit him. On June 30, 1959, Phil married Janice Pudvah, who predeceased him on July 9, 1994. They were married for 35 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 76 in Barton, and he enjoyed restoring and collecting antique cars. In addition to wildlife hunting, he hunted for parts for his antique cars. He and his wife used to enjoy rides in the country with their cars. He was a lover of country music and wanted to be known as "Country Boy." Phil is survived by his children, Rhonda Medley and her husband Craig of Davie , Fla., Bonnie Hagen and her husband John of Spokane, Wash., Philip H. Brown of Glover, Marcia Brown and her friend D. Jay Stricker of Belvidere, Vt., Brenda Rodgers and her husband John of Glover, and Arnold Brown and his friend Tonya Guillette of Glover; 13 grandchildren, Keith and Jay Hagen, Amy, Beth and Bradley Riendeau, Addy and Lydia Stricker, Paige, Logan and Faith Medley, Blair Blais, John Finley and Derek Rodgers; a special friend, Eleanor Bailey; two brothers, Horace S. , 54, of Lyndon, died at his home at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in the company of family and friends. He died from a fast-acting cancer that was discovered roughly four weeks ago. James Steven Gruber - known to his friends as Jimmy - was born March 28, 1947 in New York City, N.Y. He spent his early childhood in Watkins Glen, N.Y., before moving with his family to Groton in 1959, where his father worked with dairy farmers breeding Jersey and Holstein cows. Upon graduating from Groton High School in 1964, he spent time at the University of Vermont before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Oriskany, which was stationed in the South China Sea for a time during the Vietnam War. After being discharged, he spent time on the West Coast and did a stint mining coal in Colorado. In the early'70s he came back to Vermont, where he did a number of odd jobs. He was a motorcycle mechanic, and a granola maker at Hatch's Natural Food Store in St. Johnsbury, before enrolling at Lyndon State College. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications, helping along the way to set up the college's first television station. He lived in the Red House in Lyndon, where he met Janet Thorn. Together, they made a life and in 1984 had a son, Eli, who is currently a senior at Lyndon Institute. Jimmy made his living as a carpenter, working with builder Don Matthews. Among his friends he was known as a homebody, always quick to offer a welcome. He had a heart as big as his workman's hands and believed you should treat people the way you want them to treat you. To his family he was patient, gracious and solid as a rock. He liked to garden and listen to reggae and rock'n' roll. He loved to dance. For those who knew him, Jimmy had the enviable gift of taking life one day at a time, a gift he gave freely and often to others at the time of his illness. To this end, he was fortified in his belief that all life is precious and cyclical, a belief that blossomed as he became more deeply involved in American Indian spirituality. On Saturday, Sept. 1, his life was celebrated at a gathering of his family and friends behind his home. In the custom of an American Indian ceremony, a sacred fire was lit and tobacco, songs, and prayers were offered to accompany his spirit on its journey. Jimmy is survived by Janet and Eli; his stepdaughter, Caedlighe Shore of New York City, N.Y.; his father, Robert Gruber of Groton, and a sister, Kathy Gruber of Hyde Park. , 91, of Easton Road, Sugar Hill, N.H., passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. Mrs. Stewart was born March 15, 1910, in Lisbon, N.H., a daughter to Simon and Georgia (LaBonte) Haynes. She attended area schools and was married to James W. Stewart, who predeceased her on July 15, 1995. She and her husband ran the family farm and enjoyed making and selling maple syrup. She greatly enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. She was a lifetime Grange member in Sugar Hill. Surviving family members include two daughters, Katherine Bonor of Lebanon, Conn., and Lorraine Hunt of Sugar Hill, N.H.; one son, Charles Stewart of Sugar Hill; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. , 70, of Sampson Road, Littleton, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at the Lafayette Healthcare Center in Franconia. He was born in Littleton, the son of Isaac and Susie (Romanos) Toney. He was a lifelong resident of the community, and he worked for many years at Connors and Hoffman Shoe Company in the lasting department. He enjoyed reading and being in his workshop doing woodworking, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Hill) Toney of Littleton; two daughters, Tamara and Erin Toney, both of Littleton; two brothers, Louis Toney of Littleton, and Anthony Toney of California; and a sister, Marion McManus of Littleton. A retired Vermont schoolteacher, Phoebe was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Ray Ingalls of Ile Des Chenes, Manitoba, Canada, and John Ingalls of Cream Ridge, N.J.; a daughter, Dorothy Humphrey of New Egypt, N.J.; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was born in Orleans, June 15, 1919, the son of Theadore and Mina (Lamothe) Currier. A graduate of Orleans High School, Class of 1937, Larry served his country during World War II in the Air Force in Europe as a staff sergeant and airplane maintenance technician. Before retirement, Larry worked as a machinist for Vermont Tap and Die Co. in Lyndonville for over 40 years. He also serviced vending machines for Gem Vending of Lyndonville for many years. During the 1950s he was a partner with Herbert Gregory, operating Currier and Gregory Beverage Machines of Lyndonville. He was a trustee of Lyndonville for four years and also served as justice of the peace. He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture for family and friends, and spending time with them. On July 12, 1953, he married Ruth B. Gale, who survives him in Lyndonville. Other survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Olcott and husband Glenn Jr., Margaret Allard, and Thelma Wilkins and husband Harold Jr. "Bub," all of Lyndonville; seven grandchildren, Wendy Olcott Nelson and husband Wayne, Greg Olcott, John Hall Jr., Jeffrey Hall and wife Cindy, Brian Wilkins and wife Martha, Darcy Norcross and husband Bruce, and Dana Wilkins and fiancee Crystal Bedor; four great-grandchildren, Mitchell Norcross, Danika Norcross, Trevor Norcross, and Jacob Wilkins; seven sisters-in-law, Elva Currier of Connecticut, Vivian Currier of Newport, Helen Amidon and husband Stanley of Waterbury Center, Rachel Gale of Connecticut, Christine Gale of St. Johnsbury Center, Leone Gale of Lyndon Center, and Ethel Easterbrooks of Massachusetts; nieces and nephews. , 86, of Crystal Lake, Barton, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. He was born April 6, 1915, in Burke, the last surviving child of Eugene J. and Demerise M. (Bergeron) Hamel. On June 13, 1939, he married Arline E. Smith. During World War II, Cyril served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First Class. A carpenter and maintenance person, Cyril worked for 12 years at Purina Mills in St. Johnsbury, and retired from Lyndon State College after 13 years there. He held memberships in the VFW, the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge, all in St. Johnsbury. He was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Arline E. Hamel of the St. Johnsbury House in St. Johnsbury; their daughter, Lucille H. Gillette of Fuguary Varina, N.C.; two grandsons, Michael Gillette of Aurora, Colo., and Milton Gillette of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews. , 80, of the Highland House, Whitefield, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2001, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mrs. Miller was born in Kulangsu, Amoy, China on June 17, 1921, the daughter of Dorrien and Beatrice (Charles) deLusignan. Raised in England she attended schools there and acquired a nursing degree. During World War II she worked with Civil Defense and in health care as an emergency nurse. She met her husband, Dale Miller, at an English hospital where he was being treated for injuries he suffered in the Battle of the Bulge. They married there and she came to Whitefield in 1946. She continued working in health care in this country at Morrison Hospital, Whitefield, for many years. She also worked as a housekeeper many years in retirement. Frances was a volunteer extraordinare; always lending a hand whereever it might be needed. She has resided at the Highland House since 1978 when her husband of 30 years passed away. She was a member of the Whitefield Community Baptist Church and spent much time in service to others through her church. She was very active in the Grange and was a member of the Whitefield and Littleton VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and making jams and jellies. Family members include two sons Dean A. Miller of Dalton, Dale R. Miller of Whitefield; a twin brother, Raymond deLusignan of South Bend, Ind.; four grandchildren, Richard Miller, Dean Miller, Crystal Miller, Nicole Sanborn; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Miller, Cory Sanborn, Evan Sanborn; two nephews and two nieces. , 74, of Newport, Vt., died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, in Lebanon, N.H. She was born July 13, 1927, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Fred and Henrietta (Armstrong) Burroughs. Bertie graduated from Brighton High School and later received a degree in business from Burlington Business College. On June 24, 1947, she married Harold Bowen, who predeceased her Sept. 4, 1993. Mrs. Bowen was a store clerk for Ben Franklin Stores, taught kindergarden in Derby Line, was a nurse's aide for the Broadview Hospital in Newport, and was Derby Line village treasurer for many years. She held memberships with the American Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah's Lodge, VFW Auxiliary, United Church of Newport, and Stanstead South United Church. She is survived by her two sons, Lance Bowen and his wife Linda of Derby Line, and Larry Bowen and his wife Linda of Derby; her grandchildren, Angela Riopelle and husband Bob, Scott Tetreault and wife Michelle, Brad Bowen and wife Crystal, and Hope Bowen; and 10 great-grandchildren. , 82, of Hardwick, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born March 31, 1919, in Craftsbury, the daughter of John F. and Frances Cordelia (Ladeau) Marckres. She attended Craftsbury public schools, and graduated from Craftsbury Academy, Class of 1936. On June 10, 1941, she married Kenneth Charles Chase in Albany. Mary was a domestic worker for many years in Craftsbury and Hardwick. She retired in 1991. She was affiliated with the United Church of Hardwick, a member of the Women's Fellowship, Circle 1, of that church, and for many years she taught Sunday school. Other interests included cooking, making wool vests from material she purchased from the Johnson Woolen Mills, hunting, fishing, picking berries and making latch hook rugs. , of West Newbury, Vt., died Sept. 10, 2001, at the Valley View Home for the Retired in Fairlee, with family members at her bedside. She was born Marjorie Douglas Tewksbury, Nov. 3, 1906, the daughter of Frederick J. Tewksbury and Joanna Belle (Sargent) Tewksbury, and grew up in South Ryegate. She graduated from Wells River High School in 1924 and received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Vermont in 1928. She married Francis Bingham Peach June 4, 1930. They lived in Swanton for four years and in Island Pond for 30. In 1952 they bought her great-grandfather J.B.W. Tewksbury's homestead, built in 1832, in West Newbury. They lovingly restored it and moved there in 1968. After her husband's retirement from the U.S. Customs service they spent winters in Largo, Fla., where she was active in church and the Vermont Club of Florida activities. While living in Island Pond, she taught math and science for five years during World War II and substitute taught for many years. She was a Brighton town auditor from 1955 to 1969, a 4-H leader for 12 years, and served on the state 4-H council. She was actively involved in UVM alumni affairs, serving as a member of the alumni council and vice president of the Class of 1928. Although maintaining a life-long membership in the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church, Marjorie actively participated in church life wherever she lived. She served as a director of the Vermont Congregational Conference, and while on the board of the Vermont Congregational Women's Conference, was involved in establishing the Frances Atkinson Residence in Newbury. She served as a trustee and took a very personal interest in the residents. She used her long interest in and knowledge of the history and genealogy of the town to help found the Newbury Historical Society. She served on its board of directors and was on the committee that wrote "The History of Newbury, Vermont 1900-1977," which supplemented the original history published in 1902. She was an active member of the West Newbury Women's Fellowship and served as president. When no longer able to live independently, she moved to the Atkinson Residence, and for the past four years lived at Valley View. She continued to be a regular attendee of various meal sites in the area and made many new friends. She will be remembered for her dedication to any project with which she was involved, and her friendships along the way. Everyone knew Mrs. Peach. She is survived by one sister, Joanna Tewksbury Manning; a daughter, Betty Allebach; two granddaughters, Mary Anne Bearse and Elizabeth Fooks; two nieces, and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1973, and her daughter, Alison Bearse Armstrong. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. in the West Newbury Congregational Church. , 56, of 952 North Kirby Road, Kirby, Vt., passed away at his residence Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001. He was born Jan. 4, 1945, in Lyndon, the son of Ernest and Grace (King) Emery. He served in the U.S. Army and in the Vietnam War. Before retiring, he worked as the club manager at the VFW in Lyndonville, where he was a member and past commander. He is survived by his mother, Grace Emery of Kirby; his brother, David Emery of Kirby; his sister, Shirley Conner of Erie, Pa.; his uncle, Lawrence King of St. Johnsbury; and his niece and nephews, Michael Willey, Lori Willey, Shawn Brooks and Barry Brooks. , 94, of Walden, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover. She was born Jan. 15, 1907 in Weldon, Pa., the daughter of Benjamin J. and Lucia (Hamilton) Hoxie. She attended public schools in Pennsylvania and in Cavendish, Vt. In 1964 she moved to Walden, where she made her home for more than three decades. Survivors include one niece, Hazel Greaves of Walden; two nephews, Gordon Hoxie of Lincoln, R.I., and Kenneth Severens of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Nettie Hoxie of Denver, Colo. She was predeceased by a sister, Stella; and four brothers, Irwin, Howard, Hamilton and Norman. Stephen was born in Roscoe, N.Y., a son of Ira and Bettie Mae (Anderson) Ray on Aug. 4, 1944. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Stephen was most recently employed by the town of Franconia. He was born in Haverhill, July 26, 1925, a son of William Clinton and Midlred Blanche (Perkins) Smith. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean War and was a member of Ross-Wood American Legion Post 20 of Woodsville. He was a heavy equipment operator having worked for Audley and Palazzi construction companies and also the town of Haverhill Highway Department. Survivors include three daughters Donna L. Hubbard of Lyman, N.H., Debra Marie Keith of Haverhill, N.H., Diane L. Smith of Manchester, N.H.; three sons Dennis Smith of South Carolina, Dale Arthur Smith of South Hadley, Mass., Dana Allan Smith; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, and two great-grandsons; two sisters, Annabelle Fagnant of Monroe, N.H., Isabelle Morin of Falls Church, Va.; two brothers, Lionel L. , 71, of The Terraces, Shelburne, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, following a courageous battle with heart disease. She was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Randolph, the daughter of Walter F. and Susan (Roundy) True. Jean graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1947 and the University of Vermont in 1951, where she majored in English with a minor in science. She was a faithful member of Tri Delta Sorority. Jean received her master's degree in guidance from UVM and did graduate work in theater at Bread Loaf School. hing career started at Newport High School following which she taught at Waterbury High and Lyndon Institute. The majority of her teaching career was spent at Champlain Valley Union High School. She retired in 1990. During her teaching years, Jean was very involved in drama and debate, and for years traveled the state with her very successful debate teams. While she was a teacher at Lyndon Institute, she spent a memorable year in England as a Fulbright teacher. Jean had been a very active member of the Essex Community Players where she was an actress, a producer and costume designer, as well as a member of the board. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Ethan Allen Homestead and was involved in many aspects of life at The Terraces. Also, she was a recent past president of the Chittenden County Retired Teachers Association. She devoted endless hours of work and great enthusiasm to all her projects. A lover of literature and theater, Jean was also a tale nted artist and craftswoman. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Joan True of Florida; her nephew, Robert Lynam Jr. and his wife Janette Sabo of Haverhill, Mass.; and her nephew, Walter Roy Lynam of California. Also surviving her is a nephew, Gary True and his wife Debbie; and her niece Janet True Kirkpatrick and her husband Tim, all of Indiana. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Walter and Charles; and her sister Ruth. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, at Shelburne United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sidney Lambert officiating. , 60, died suddenly, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. The son of Florian A. and Josephine R. (Littlehale) Cote, Jerry was born April 23, 1941, in St. Johnsbury. He grew up in the St. Johnsbury area and attended area schools. He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s. He married Suzanne Baraw, Feb. 11, 1989; she preceded him in death March 13, 2000. Jerry worked for IBM prior to retirement. Jerry loved his motorcycle and enjoyed traveling, and he also spent time in Florida. He is survived by his fiancee, Teresa Cooper of McIndoe Falls; a son, Gerald "Jerry" T. Cote II and wife Tracy of St. Johnsbury; three brothers, Donald of St. Johnsbury, Jim of Danville and Leo of California; three granddaughters, Kayla, Karli and Kara; and many nieces and nephews. , 86, passed away peacefully in West Burke, Friday, Sept. 14, 2001. She was born Sept. 3, 1915, in Barton, the daughter of Sanford and Kitty May. Freda grew up in Barton, raised her family in Barre, and moved to Venice, Fla., after retiring at the Rock of Ages capacitor plant. Freda was a past member of the Hedding Methodist Church in Barre, where she was active in the Gamma Delta Club. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Freda is survived by her son, Bruce H. Cornish and his wife Janis Scorpio of McLean, Va.; her daughter, Vivien "Bunny" Kremer and her husband Robert "Otto" of West Burke; 12 grandchildren, Michael Cornish, Kathy Dailey, Anne Cornish and Ellen Frey of Virginia, Tammy Aja of West Burke, John Aja of St. Johnsbury, Karen Spooner and Kay Kuzmik of Washington, Vt., Soni Kuzmik and Robin Stevens of Barre, Cathy Moreau and Kim Kuzmik of Goffstown, N.H.; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, John H. Cornish, in 1966; by her second husband, Kenney Lunde, in 1986; and by a daughter, Nancy Stevens, in 1987. There will be no visiting hours. , 93, formerly of Bobbin Mill Road, Lunenburg, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster, where she has been a resident since 1999. Miss Balch was born in Medford, Maine, May 12, 1908, the daughter of Eugene G. and Mary E. (Emery) Balch. She resided as a youth in Maine for six years but has been a Lunenburg resident at the family farm on Bobbin Mill Road for the majority of her lifetime. She was very creative, especially with stone work, and enjoyed flowers, vegetable gardens and berries. She is survived by several cousins. Her brother Howard R. Balch predeceased her in 1992. , 97, longtime resident of Route 122, Lyndon Center, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, while at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. She was born in Sheffield, Aug. 17, 1904, the daughter of John R. and Etta B. (Davis) Phillips. She graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1924 and Lyndon Normal School in 1925. Mrs. Edmunds worked as a teacher in the Sutton Schools until she married Alvah Wakefield Edmunds on June 16, 1928. They operated a dairy farm on Route 122 from 1935-1979. She enjoyed cooking, dancing and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Allyn and Paula Edmunds, and Ashley and Jennie Edmunds, all of Lyndon Center; two daughters and their husbands, Alice and Kenneth Nichols of St. Johnsbury Center, and Audrey and Robert Rexford of Lyndonville; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Claire Peak of Lyndonville; a sister-in-law, Viola McCready of Newton Highlands, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Norris Edmunds and his wife Dorothy of Brattleboro; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvah Edmunds, in 1984; two infant sons, Arthur Clarence and Austin Merritt Edmunds; a brother, Merritt Phillips; and a sister, Mary Bates. , 76, of Barton, formerly of Irasburg, passed away in St. Johnsbury, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001. He was born in Irasburg, Sept. 18, 1925, the son of Clarence and Merle (Duckless) Fisher. Philip served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. He worked in construction throughout New England and New York, for Midway Excavation and other companies, including work on Interstates 89, 91, and Vermont Yankee. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, the VFW Newport Alfred Pepin Post 798, the American Legion Orleans Post 23, and the Irasburg Fire Department, for over 25 years. Phil was a person who enjoyed playing a joke on others and having a good laugh. He enjoyed playing cribbage with anyone who dared. He also enjoyed family gatherings, especially being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On July 4, 1945, Philip married the former Anna May Kinsman, who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Christine Reed and her husband Robert of Orleans, Rocky Chaffee and her husband Tom of Albany, Charles Fisher and his wife Jane of Irasburg, Darlene Plante and her husband Ron of Derby, Mavene Waterhouse and her husband Stephen of Craftsbury, and Norene Roberts and her husband Steve of Newport Center; his sister, Rebecca Powers and her husband Raymond of Irasburg; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his foster brother, Howard Hill. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m., at the Irasburg Cemetery, with the Rev. Nathan Strong officiating. , 63, of Lyndon Center, a longtime history teacher at Lyndon Institute, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the emergency room at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born in Concord, Vt., April 20, 1938, the son of Elwin H. and Claire (Parker) Twombly. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1956, Elwin received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Vermont. He served in the U.S. Army overseas as well. A teacher dedicated to Lyndon Institute and its students for 27 years, he taught history and later became the chairman of the social studies department for 16 years. He served as adviser to the student council for many years, was creator of the first modern audio-visual department, established the close-up club, enthusiastically supported and directed winter carnivals for many years, gave faithful dedication to scholarship in social studies throughout his tenure, and was head of the "Select Community" there. He was a good friend to any and all members of the Lyndon Institute community. Elwin enjoyed people and good conversation. He was an avid reader, a Boston Celtics fan and derived great pleasure cultivating his rhubarb patch, from which he made pies, muffins and anything else he could add rhubarb to. After retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Puerto Rico. He was a life member of the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Sean and Stacey Twombly of Washington, D.C., and Kevin and Heather Twombly of Newmarket, N.H.; two brothers, Stephen Twombly of Penacook, N.H., and Christopher Twombly of Henniker, N.H.; two nieces, Carrie and Brooke; a nephew, Christopher; former students, faculty and staff of Lyndon Institute and many close friends. She married Harold Miles, who predeceased her in 1950. Sylvia enjoyed picture puzzles, poetry, embroidering, and was an avid reader. , 68, of Prospect Street, Bethlehem, N.H., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001. For four years, Joan courageously battled breast cancer. She was born a daughter to Joseph and Josephine (Russell) Dare on Feb. 3, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pa. Joan was a devoted wife and homemaker by choice. She loved and related to all children. After her three children were grown, she worked at the local high school in East Greenville, Pa., in day care. She loved her family and adored her grandsons, Chris, Matt and Danny. A lifetime of gardening and being outdoors, reading, sending cards and enjoying all kinds of music enriched her daily activities. She found delight in simple things and focused always on the most positive aspects of life. No matter how incriminating circumstances surrounding an individual might have been, she always had an objective viewpoint. Her zest for life was incomparable. Surviving family includes her supportive husband of 48 years, Robert of Bethlehem, N.H.; two daughters, Carol Littlefield and husband Ronald of Whitefield, N.H., Joan Tomasovich and her husband Jeffrey of Port Orchard, Wash.; a son, Robert Christian Blechl of Bethlehem; a sister, Carol Levin and husband William of Ridley Park, Pa.; one brother, Robert Dare and wife Beverly of Brookhaven, Pa.; three grandsons; an aunt and uncle; nieces, nephews and cousins. , 81, of 233 Sampson Road, Littleton, N.H., passed away at the Littleton Regional Hospital, Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, following a long illness. He was born in Ashland, N.H., son of Howard and Hannah (Libby) Hill. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and received the Purple Cross and the Bronze Star during that campaign. He was an electrician and worked for many years for Brad Cooper Electrical Company of Littleton. Ben was a Life Member of the VFW, Howard Shawney Post of Littleton, and he was an avid reader, fisherman and also enjoyed camping. He is survived by his wife Hazel Hill; two daughters, Nancy Toney and Patricia Curtis, both of Littleton; three brothers Richard Hill, Rochester, N.H., Martin Riley, Wisconsin, and Daniel Riley, Milan, N.H.; a sister, Gwen Corey, Littleton; and two grandchildren. She used to attend church at Faith Chapel on Pleasant Street, loved to play bingo and was a member of VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Gary Greene of St. Johnsbury, and Larry Greene of Auburn Maine; three grandchildren; three sisters, Rowena Perkins of Auburndale, Fla., Dorine Burchette of Deep Gap, N.C., and Dorothy Lennon of Pomona, Calif; and one brother, Clarence Jameson of Dover, N.H. She was predeceased by two brothers, Pardon Jameson and James Clark; and one sister, Mary Smith. Because of her love of animals, memorial contributions may be directed to Elizabeth H. , 93, of St. Johnsbury, died at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, Saturday evening, Sept. 22, 2001. Born in Medford Hillside, Mass., Howard was the son of Edwin and Ethel (Blodgett) Suitor. Howard worked in wholesale plumbing sales all his working life at Millar Supply in St. Johnsbury and Massachusetts, and for State Supply in Florida. He resided 17 years in Hollywood, Fla. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Howard was predeceased by his second wife, Ameta Ashe, in 1986; and by his first wife, Cophine (Neff) in 1980. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Julian Butler of St. Johnsbury; two nieces and their children; and by Ameta's family. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church, with burial following at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Following the committal, all are welcome back to the Butler home for refreshments. There will be no visiting hours. , 71, of Boismont Drive, Jefferson, N.H., died Friday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2001, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H. Mr. Ingerson was born in Jefferson, Jan. 21, 1930, the son of Albert and Helen (Page) Ingerson. A lifetime resident of Jefferson he held several jobs, including the Jefferson Road Agent, farmer and truck driver for Resi-Chem and Northern Paving. For 39 years he has been the caretaker of the Carter Estate in Jefferson. Family members include his wife Marietta (Enman) Ingerson of Jefferson; five children and their spouses, Lynn I. Smith and Michael of Salem, Va., Wanda J. Sloan and Rick of Bradenton Beach, Fla., Dona L. Sanborn and Wes of Gorham, N.H., Rodney E. Ingerson and Pat of Jefferson, Nancy S. Skillin and Wayne of Dalton, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-granchildren; a brother, Carroll Ingerson of Jefferson; two sisters, Stella Paschal of Jefferson, and Marilyn Wetmore of Brandon, Vt. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jason E. Stone, on March 1, 1992. There are no calling hours. , 83, of 749 C Long Hill Road, Middletown, Conn., wife of Richard V. Daly Jr., died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001. She was born on July 16, 1918, in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of Alfred and Anna (DiMarine) Guiditta. She was a giving, loving mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and friend, and she gave freely to all whom she knew. She is survived by her husband, Richard V. Daly Jr.; a son, Richard V. Daly III of Ivoryton; two daughters Mary O. Scott of St. Johnsbury, and Elizabeth Daly of Williamstown, Mass.; a brother Alfred Guiditta Jr. of Waterbury, Conn.; and seven grandchildren, Richard IV, Emily, Raya, Timothy, Alexandra, Michael and Erin-Katherine. Sylvia was predeceased by three sisters and a brother she loved, Josephine Anderson, Carmella "Millie" Coccia, Antionette "Honey" Guglielmo and Nicholas Guiditta, all of Waterbury. Sylvia was employed as a hairdresser for 18 years at Connecticut Valley Hospital where she cared for patients with kindness and great compassion. She was an avid golfer and shared a love of the game with her husband and her friends. She also enjoyed bingo with all her friends at St. Sebastian's Church and weekend tag sale outings, most of all. She was a selfless person and devoted mother and wife who enjoyed caring for and giving to her husband and children. She redefined the meaning of the word "Mother." During her final days of life, she was lovingly cared for by Jola Warebuk of Warsaw, Poland. Jola during this time was her best friend and living room dance partner. Sylvia loved her like she was a daughter. A memorial Mass celebrating her life will be offered at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, at St. John's Church in Middletown. There are no calling hours.

, 85, of Danville, died at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon early Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001. He was born in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 14, 1916, the son of Charles and Hilda (Barnes) Kirker. John was the owner of The Danville Garage. He took pride in his work restoring wrecks and general auto body repair. He had formerly been shop foreman at the old Corner Garage, located where Gilmour Ford now is. He loved his dogs and cats. He is survived by three children, M. Ann Vance and husband Richard of North Danville, Charles Kirker and wife Coral Coleman of Colchester, and Sharon Daniell and husband Gary of Danville; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was tragically predeceased by a grandson, Dickie Vance; his oldest child, David Kirker in 1997; and by all his siblings, Eleanor, Dorothy, Hilda, Charles, Marion, Robert and Sally. His good friend, Everett Drew of Danville, assisted him with his affairs. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, at 11 a.m., at the Danville Green Cemetery. The Rev. Melvin A. , 81, formerly of Lyndon Meadows, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. She was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Bethel, Maine, the daughter of Paul F. and Dora (Kirtner) McClellan. On May 8, 1938, she married Carl R. Flood. For 20 years, she worked for White's Cleaners in Worcester, Mass., before retiring in 1979 and moving to Vermont. Well-known for her homemade donuts, filled cookies and macaroni, Mary's door was always open to help anyone in need. She enjoyed music, singing, crossword puzzles and a good joke. Spending time with family and friends was most important to her. She lived with her daughter, Betty, in Nashua, N.H., for 11/2 years prior to entering the Pines. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley M. Stevens and her husband, Curt, of Rockland, Mass., and Betty A. McClellan, of Nashua, N.H.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Floyd Flood of St. Johnsbury; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Flood of Lyndonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Flood, in 1998; two sons, Roger D. Flood (infant), and Roger K. Flood in 1978; and two brothers, Kenneth and Paul McClellan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Pittman officiating. Friends may meet with the family one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial at William Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield will follow the service. , 61, of Cottage Street, Lane House, Littleton, N.H., passed away at his residence Sept. 21, 2001, after a long illness. Jerry was born in Passumpsic, a son of Walter and Goldie (Sanborn) Hartshorn on Aug. 7, 1940. He was a post employee for the town of Littleton in the landfill division. Surviving family members include his mother, Goldie Hartshorn of Florida; one son, Todd C. Hartshorn and wife Mellissa of Littleton. N.H.; one daughter, Melody L. Hartshorn of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Joyce Whittier of Bloomfield, Vt., and Jackie Caires of Colebrook, N.H.; one brother, Walter Hartshorn of Pittsburg, N.H.; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father and one sister. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, N.H., with the Rev. Lyn O. , 77, of Whitcomb Road, Drewsville, N.H., died at the home of his son in Walpole, N.H., Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001. He was born July 14, 1924 in St. Johnsbury, the son of Albert II and Clara V. (Duclos) LaClair. Mr. LaClair attended school in St. Johnsbury, returning after the war to graduate. He worked for the Lenton farm in Passumpsic before the war and returned to work on dairy farms in Sutton; Hoosic Falls, N.Y.; and at the Far Hills Farm in Walpole. He worked for several local companies including R.N. Johnson and Pinnacleview Equipment of Walpole, as well as the Stratton Mountain Corporation. From 1971 to 1974 Mr. LaClair was a part owner of Tri-Town Yamaha, a local retailer of motorcycles, snowmobiles and related equipment with stores in Keene and Alstead, N.H. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. On Nov. 27, 1948, in Danville, he married Madeline R. Bryer, who survives him. He is also survived by three sons, Larry LaClair of Brunswick, Maine, Len LaClair of Jericho, and Lewis LaClair of Walpole; two daughters, Linda Campbell, and Mary Knott, both of Langdon, N.H.; two brothers Leon LaClair of St. Johnsbury, and Raymond LaClair of Avila Beach, Calif.; five sisters, Lorana Waite of Burlington, Odile Jacobs of Lakeland, Fla., Pat Mazur of Youngstown, N.Y., Charlotte Bradburn of Wichita, Kan., and Laura DiBacco of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene and Cecil; and one sister, Adela Baggett. There will be a memorial service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Drewsville, on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours. 96, of Dunedin, Fla., formerly of Congress Street in Bethlehem, N.H., passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Mease Hospital in Dunedin. He was born a son to Francis S. and Martha (Herrick) Fox, Nov. 17, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Frank served under Mayors Walker, McEe and LaGuardia in New York, and then transferred to the Board of Education and served as principal administration associate to the secretary of the Board of Education in New York City before retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Dunedin. He summered many years at his home on Congress Street in Bethlehem, and attended the Christ the King Catholic Church there. Surviving family includes one daughter, Dolores Maskowitz of N. Brunswick, N.J.; two sisters, Regina Fox and Marie Fox, both of Dunedin; one brother, Arthur Fox of Breezy Point, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be given Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Saint Rose Cemetery in Littleton, with the Rev. Joseph Klatka officiating.

, 86, of Port Orange, Fla., passed away on Sept. 16, 2001, at the Florida Hospital Deland, in Deland, Fla. She was born on Sept. 14, 1914, in Lyndonville, the daughter of the late George and Ruth Duke. She attended school in Lyndon, graduated from Lyndon Institute, Class of 1931, and Lyndon Normal School, Class of 1934. She worked in the St. Johnsbury and Montpelier School systems, then worked for National Life Insurance Company in Montpelier for 34 years. After retiring in October 1979, she moved to Florida. She was active in the Palette & Brush Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. She is survived by her nephew, George F. Duke of Englewood, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Doria Duke of Dayton, Ohio; and cousins, Clarice Hennessey of Deland, who was a dear friend and took loving care of her, Ruth and Sidney Nurenburg of Lyndonville, Arthur and Beverly McCann of Lyndonville, Maurice and Edna Stone of St. Johnsbury, Rodney and Ellen Kerr of Greensboro, and Thomas and Colleen Kerr of Waitsfield. Graveside services will be held at the Lyndon Center Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at 9 a.m., with the Rev. Mel Richardson officiating.

, 82, formerly of Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury, died Saturday evening, Sept. 22, 2001 at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. She was born March 9, 1919, in Raleigh, N.C., the daughter of Donald R. and Eleanor B. (Mull) Jackson. On Sept. 19, 1940, she married Joseph L. Middleton. Mrs. Middleton lived in Hendersonville, N.C., prior to moving to St. Johnsbury in 1995. She was a professor of sociology and psychology for nearly 30 years, teaching at North Carolina State University and Peace College, both located in Raleigh, N.C. A person who loved people, she maintained a positive outlook on life and had a great thirst for knowledge. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Racine and her husband, Charles of Barnet, and Jacilyn Middleton of Atlanta, Ga.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph L. Middleton in 1991; her brother, Donald Jackson Jr.; and her sister, Dr. Susan Mellette. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

She was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Ethel (Moreshead) and Llewellyn Jordan and raised in Islington, Mass. In 1943 she married Donald J. Smith, who died in May 2000, shortly after celebrating 57 years together. Glenna enjoyed being a homemaker and mother and cared for many neighborhood children in Norwood, Mass., before moving to Sandwich, Mass., in 1972. Crafts, crosswords and cookie making were among her interests. She moved to Newark, Vt., in June to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Douglas Coughlin. She also leaves Donna's two sons, Joshua Shore of North Reading, Mass., and Jacob Shore of Athol, Mass. Survivors also include her daughter, Glenna Foster of New Hampshire; her son, Travis Foster and his wife, Donna, and their son, Michael Rinere, all of Bourne, Mass.; and many loving and caring friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Luella Rea of Walpole, Mass., and a brother, Richard Jordan of Coneseus, N.Y. There will be no services at this time.
