, of East Barnet, Joe's Brook Road, since the early 1960s, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Windgate at Andover facility in Andover, Mass., where he resided for the past two years. He was born in Quebec, Canada, Sept. 7, 1906, the son of John Reid and Isabella Boyd (Morrison) Johnston. Herbert married Marion J. Blandin Aug. 7, 1929. She predeceased him Jan. 22, 2004. Herbert was a machinist and educational instructor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Johnston was a long-time resident of East Barnet and was a member of the East Barnet Congregational Church. He also lived in Concord, N.H., and Summerville, Mass. He is survived by two daughters, Muriel Scott and her husband Alfred, of Englewood, Fla., and Janice Bezanson and her husband Bruce, of Meredith, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Barbara Smith, Susan Campbell, Carol Ashe, all of Billerica, Mass., David Scott of Hudson, N.H., Robert Scott, of Billerica Mass., Lauren Trapasso, of Eaton, N.H., Patti Fielding, of Lowell, Mass., and Nancy Bezanson and Sally Hoefs, both of Moultonboro, N.H.; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A brother, Gordon Johnston; and two sisters, Clara McHarg and Grace Lakeway, predeceased him. Funeral services will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Wednesday, May 26, at noon, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Visiting hours will be held starting one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. WOOD: Albert R. ....show
, of Concord, Vt., died Sunday morning, May 23, 2004, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital at the age of 75. He was born in West Burke, July 1, 1928, the son of Herbert and Edith (Thurston) Wood. Albert grew up in South Kirby and attended the one-room schoolhouse. He attended Concord High School and left in his sophomore year to work on the family farm in South Kirby. On June 9, 1951, he married Phyllis (Morehouse) of Concord, and in 1953, they purchased their own farm in Concord. Albert was a lifetime farmer and sugar maker, well-known for the pride in his crops. He was a lister for the town of Concord, a selectman for 12 years, school director and a member of the Concord School Committee. Many knew Albert as a substitute mail carrier and full-time carrier, retiring in 1986 after 31 years. Other interests included membership on the Essex County Agriculture Conservation Service and a 54-year member of the Moose River Lodge 82 F & AM. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Roger and his wife Joy Wood, of Concord, Alan Wood, of Concord, and James and Jennifer Wood, of Kirby; three daughters, Leslie and her husband Cedric Sanborn, of Barre, Jane and her husband Douglas Bengston, of St. Johnsbury, and Linda and her husband Gerald Sherman, of Lyndonville; a brother, Donald Wood, of South Kirby; two sisters, Priscilla and her husband Frank Allen, of Middlesex, Vt., and Marion and her husband Carl Warden, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at Sayles Funeral Home, Wednesday, May 26, at 2 p.m., with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery, East St. Johnsbury. Friends are invited to meet the family Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. , 60, of Island Pond Vt., formerly of Paxton and Worcester, Mass., died at North Country Hospital in Newport, Vt., May 10, 2004, following a lengthy illness. He leaves a daughter, Tracey Lee Chasmine, and a son, Jeffrey Paul Cooney, both of Paxton Mass.; four grandchildren; a brother, Terrence Cooney, of Wernersville, Pa.; three sisters, Sharon Russell, of Abu Dhabi, UAE, Sheila Myers, of Houston, Texas, and Jean Gagliardi, of League City, Texas; an aunt, Marion Sargent; her grandson, John Cotton; her five great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; a former wife, Susan (Palmer) Martin and her family; and many good friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen (Reed) Russell, and his father, Henry Russell. Paul was born on Feb. 3, 1944 in Worcester Mass. He graduated from Paxton Center School, receiving the American Legion Award. He went on to graduate from W.R.H.S. in Holden, Mass. He was an Eagle Scout, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, then a member of the Paxton and Island Pond American Legions. He worked for the Worcester Wire Company in Massachusetts and drove cab in Worcester. He also worked for the phone company in Vermont. From 1986-1997 he worked as a millwright in the carpenter's union on jobs like the airport in Golden, Colo. After the island of St. Crois was destroyed by hurricane Hugo in 1989, Paul went with other carpenters to provide disaster relief and rebuild homes. He provided this type of disaster relief as needed over the years. He loved mountains and lakes, hunting and fishing (especially for rainbow trout). He loved green apples and blackberries, nature and wildlife. He was involved with local politics (helping to prevent widespread use of herbicides on the forests of Vermont). He followed world politics closely, and loved to read. He loved his family and friends. We'll miss him very much. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church St., Paxton, Mass., at 7 p.m., May 28, 2004. There'll also be a memorial service at the American Legion Post 80, 60 Railroad St., Island Pond, Vt., at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 29, 2004. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346; or to a charity of your choice.
RANDALL: Wanda Sloane ....show
, 76, of Breezy Hill Road, Barton, Vt., passed away peacefully at her home Monday, May 24, 2004, surrounded by her family. She was born in Burlington, Vt., Jan. 24, 1928, the daughter of Walter and Albertine (Fitzgerald) Sloane. Wanda was a 1945 graduate of BFA in St. Albans, Vt. She worked as the town clerk in Barton from 1969 until 1979, and kept the town books until 1986. She also mentored town employees from 1979 until 1986 and was the administrator of the Barton-Orleans Swim Project from 1957 until 1967. Wanda loved to be with her family. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling with family and friends, knitting and cooking and was an avid reader. She made everyone who visited feel as if they were part of the family. On Sept. 3, 1949, Wanda married Earle Randall, who survives her. She is also survived by her children, Glen Randall and his wife Kay, of Barton, Susan Randall and her life partner Trudy Davis, of Evansville, Lenna Noth, of Essex Center, Vt., and Gail Hayden and her husband Eugene Hayden III, of Blackstone, Mass.; her grandchildren, Avery and Shanna Randall, Devin Lebrun, Lindsay, Bradley and Dustin Noth, Veronica Hayden, Kye Randall and Clark Hayden; and her great-granddaughter, Sofia Randall. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 27, at the North Cemetery in Barton at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Rupp officiating. Interment will follow. , 63, of Montgomery Center, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. He was born Sept. 10, 1940, in St. Albans, the son of the late Thomas and Leona (Gover) Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Marsha (Young) Phillips, of Montgomery Center; his son, Mark Phillips and his wife Dawn, of Milton; his grandchildren, Taylor, Chayce and Brooke Phillips. He is also survived by Marsha's children, whom Gary loved as his own, Kimberly Bryant and her husband Reid, of North Orange, Mass., and Chris Carr and his daughter Aunestie Carr, of Montgomery. Gary was employed as vice president of the Lyndonville Savings Bank until his poor health forced him to retire. He was instrumental in starting the Lyndonville Savings Bank Scholarship Program. He was a member of the F & AM Haswell Lodge and the Mount Sinai Shriners. He was also a former director of the Franklin County Industrial Development Corporation, Enosburg Falls Economic Development Corporation and the Richford Renaissance. In keeping with Gary's wishes, he will be cremated and an outdoor celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 2 p.m., at his home on 121 North Main St. in Montgomery Center. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the family lot at the Sheldon Village Cemetery. , 99, formerly of Barnet Center, Vt., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center after a long illness. She was born in North Monroe, N.H., on Aug. 6, 1904, daughter of James E. and Sarah (McKenzie) Hatley. She married Burns G. Goss on Nov. 1, 1926 and he predeceased her on Aug. 23, 1989. Mrs. Goss was a housewife and loved to take care of children. She was a member of the Barnet Center Presbyterian Church. Surviving relatives include one daughter, Sheila G. Davis, Lyndonville, Vt.; one son, Lester E. Goss, Barnet, Vt.; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Eugene Davis; five brothers and one sister, Charles, Francis, Duncan, John and Raymond Hatley, and Mrs. Lucy Goss. A calling hour will be held Thursday, May 27, from 7-8 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. , age 58, of Fairfield, Vt., was dead upon arrival at the Fletcher Allen E.R. Tuesday morning, May 25, 2004. He was born in Quincy, Mass., Oct. 6, 1945, son of Margaret Mary (Ryan) Berry and the late Kenneth M. Berry. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School and entered the U.S. Army in 1964. Serving his country for 27 years, he transferred to the U.S. Navy and later joined the Vermont Air National Guard. Ken married Linda Talcott, June 15, 1968. Besides his wife he is survived by his mother, Margaret Berry; his son, Keith and his wife Vickie Berry; his daughter, Michelle and her husband Joseph Menard; five grandchildren, Kylee and Anthony Ryan, Alissa, Briana and Ryan Berry, all of Fairfield; his brother, Richard and his wife Elaine of Barnet; sisters and their husbands, Gloria and Philip Cliche of Waterford, Vt., Marilyn Berube of Lyndonville, Vt., Rhonda and Brian MonFette of Orleans, Vt., Jacqueline Whitehead of Lyndonville; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. , 82, Central Street, Woodsville, N.H., died on May 24, 2004 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Antrim, N.H., on Nov. 12, 1921, a son of Albert S. and Nora (Coughlin) Bryer. Albert served in World War II as a tech sergeant under General Patton with the 243rd Field Artillery Battalion, landing at Utah Beach. After the war he returned to work as a steam locomotive engineer. He retired in 1985 after 41 years of service with the Boston and Maine Railroad. He was a member of the North Haverhill VFW and the American Legion Ross-Wood Post 20 in Woodsville. Also a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Horseless Carriage Club and St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. He was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert and Donald Bryer. Albert is survived by his wife, Marie M. (Leonard) Bryer, whom he married on Feb. 20, 1946; one son, Tom Bryer, Ryegate, Vt.; two grandsons, Chris Bryer and Justin Bryer; one brother, Arthur Bryer, of Antrim, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 11 a.m., in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Pine Street, Woodsville, N.H. , daughter of Raymond C. and Mildred (Hardy) McFarlin, born March 3, 1923, and long-time resident of Shelburne, passed away peacefully May 26, 2004. She was a member of the Shelburne United Methodist Church. Malva was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., where she attended schools and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. While attending St. Johnsbury Academy, she was a member of the National Honor Society, drama club and played trumpet in the Academy band and orchestra, participating in the Vermont Music Festival. Malva also met her future husband, Raymond A. Lavigne, while attending St. Johnsbury Academy. They were married Oct. 27, 1945. Malva's life was a balance of work and family. She spent both the early and later parts of her adult life in the work force, with the middle years dedicated to raising her family. During her years of employment outside the home, Malva was a legal secretary for the firm of Sterri R. Waterman in St. Johnsbury, the office manager at Addressograph/Multigraph in Albany, N.Y., and a credit and discharge administrator at MCHV. She eventually entered retirement from her longterm position as administrative assistant to the principals of the Pillars in Shelburne. Malva had a special interest in community theater (Proctor Community Players, Proctor Vt., and Champlain Valley Players, Shelburne) where she and all members of her family took part in numerous productions. Malva also loved to travel. She and Ray made many trips together, most notably to Hawaii and also to Europe to retrace Ray's travels during his tour of duty during World War II. Malva was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raymond A. Lavigne; and her brother, Dr. Rodney McFarlin. She leaves sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, Dana J. Lavigne and daughter-in-law Joanne Cooper-Lavigne and their daughters, Ava Kay, Anna Rae and Jolie Claire, of North Ferrisburgh, Vt., and Russell J. Lavigne and daughter-in-law Catherine (Krupa) Lavigne, and their children, Carl Raymond Lavigne and Renee Marie Lavigne, of Georgia, Vt. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Charlotte (Fink) McFarlin; nephews, Michael McFarlin, Patrick McFarlin, David McFarlin, David Lavigne, Brian Lavigne and Douglas Lavigne; and nieces, Mary (Lavigne) Sleeper and Laurie (McFarlin) Hudson. , 65, of Welch Drive, South Ryegate, Vt., passed away unexpectedly on May 25, 2004 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born on April 26, 1939 in Topsham, Vt., a daughter of Harry E. and Vina Frances (Keenan) Williams. On May 13, 1959, Sylvia married Wilber Welch and they spent 40 years on their beloved "Farm on the Hill" where she helped run the family dairy farm. Wilber predeceased her on Dec. 4, 1999. She was a former member of the Groton Baptist Church, Groton, Vt. She was a loving, kind, gentle person who loved her family and especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She enjoyed doing her puzzles, sewing, gardening, her flowers, cooking, shopping, going for rides with everybody and her cats. , 75, of Elm Street, Lancaster, N.H., died Friday morning, May 28, 2004, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mr. Brown was born in Lancaster on Nov. 7, 1928, the son of Daniel P. Brown Sr. and Rena McKaig Brown. Dan was a 1946 graduate of Lancaster Academy. He also attended the University of New Hampshire where he acquired a degree in geology. He served with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force where he acquired an associate's degree in aviation. For 30 years he was employed with the New Hampshire State Highway Department as a surveyor. He enjoyed building model airplanes and was a World War II buff. He was a member of John W. Weeks VFW Post 3041, Lancaster. He is survived by his longtime companion, Mariellyn Chase, of Lancaster; and his best friend who was like a son, Timothy Chase, of Warren, N.H. Visiting hours will be held Monday evening, May 31, from 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A graveside service with military honors will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, North Main Street, Lancaster. The Rev. , 83, of 61 Steve St., Lyndonville, Vt., passed away at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, Vt., Thursday, May 27, 2004. He was born Feb. 15, 1921 in Newport, Vt., the son of the late George T. and Lillian (Paige) Page. He attended school in Newport, N.H. He served in the Army during World War II and served in the Middle East. He was proud to serve his country. He worked for Fairbanks Morse and St. Johnsbury Academy. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and taking his special dog "Angel" for walks and just talking to family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Shaw) Page, whom he married July 1, 1961; and his special dog "Angel." He is also survived by his daughters, Gloria Robbins and her husband Daryl, of Canaan, N.H., and Linda Martin and her husband Dan, of Lebanon, N.H.; his sister, Bernice Perry, of Newport, N.H.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Lloyd; a sister, Beatrice; two half-brothers, William and Austin Farwell; two half-sisters, Mildred Goodwin and Blanche Gould; and by a granddaughter, Meri Robbins. , 71, died Friday afternoon May 28, 2004, at Concord Hospital, Concord, N.H. Mr. King was born in North Stratford, N.H., one of 15 children, Nov. 2, 1932, the son of William T. and Carmen (Dupuis) King. Raised in North Stratford, he worked for a time for the Canadian Central Railroad. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army in the Korean War and was decorated with several medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. At one time he worked several years for the New Hamphshire Highway Department and for 17 years he was employed with F.B. Spaulding in Lancaster, where he delivered grain. More recently he drove the Head Start bus in Groveton for six years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved cooking and gardening. Family members include his wife Charlotte (Eastman) King of Guildhall; five sons, Daniel King of Groveton, Warren King of North Chelmsford, Mass., Lindsay King of Guildhall, Brian King and David King, both of Lancaster; a brother, Armand King of Lancaster; six sisters, Rita Emerson of Lancaster, Orleans Jeffers of Westbrook, Maine, Gloria Brooks of Lancaster, Joyce Holden of Lebanon, Darlene Henry of North Stratford, Carol Sibulkin of Hooksett, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Lang of Lyndonville, on May 10, 1952. Rachel was employed more than 40 years at Russell's Drug Store in Lyndonville. She enjoyed her family, playing Bingo and the Maine seacoast. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, five brothers and one sister. She is survived by her daughter, Laura and her husband Roger of Manchester; a granddaughter, Ashley of Manchester; a son, Bruce and his wife Pauline of Washington, Vt.; and a sister, Lucy Caron of Lyndonville. The family will have a private graveside ceremony.
