, 77 , passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at the Greensboro Nursing Home, with loving family members by her side. She joins her husband, George, at the gates of heaven where the two of them share eternity with their Lord and Savior. Bernadette, was born in Berlin, Vt., on July 26, 1929, the youngest daughter of seven children. As a young lady, Bernadette lived on the family farm in Walden, Vt. One rainy afternoon in 1946 during Bernadette's long walk home from school, she observed a car driven by a handsome young man heading in the direction of her home. The stranger raced by her without offering a ride. Forty-five minutes later, she arrived home, cold and wet, to see this young man pulling out of her driveway. This ambitious young man, George Demers, had locked in a deal with her parents to process the lumber on the family farm. George did not make a very good first impression by not offering her a ride on that rainy afternoon, but he soon became the love of her life; the two were united in marriage on May 28, 1949. The couple purchased a farm in East Hardwick, Vt., which they operated for 30 years with the help of their seven children. They received many soil and dairy awards over the years. They were very proud of the land, the herd and the quality they produced. Bernadette was a very busy homemaker raising the big family. She still found time to play an active role with the children in the 4-H programs. As a 4-H leader she taught public-speaking classes to the area children. Every summer she supported the Fresh Air Fund program, giving city children the opportunity to experience being part of a big family living on the farm. In the early '80s they sold the farm and moved into the village of Hardwick, where they shared their retirement years together. In the late 1980s the couple traveled Europe and visited many biblical sites. Bernadette was a member of Saint Norbert Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. A loving wife , mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend. Words cannot begin to describe the love, inspiration and support she gave to her family over all the years.
