78, of Center Street, Wells River, Vt., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, N.H. He was born in Haverhill, N.H., July 19, 1925, the son of Walter J. and Grace (Tiedeman) Glynn. A longtime Wells River resident, he retired after 38-1/2 years as an operating engineer at the former Ryegate, Vt. Paper Company. He served in the U.S. Army with Company M 409th Infantry Regiment from 1943 to 1946. He was a communicant of St. Eugene's Catholic Church in Wells River and was also a former deputy sheriff in Orange County and a former member and chief of the Wells River Fire Department. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth A. (Hatley) Glynn, who resides at St. Johnsbury, Vt. Health & Rehab Center; one daughter, Paula Dresser DeAngelus of Gansevoort, N.Y.; two sons, Walter R. Glynn of Cottonwood, Ariz., and John F. Glynn of Bradenton, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Natalie Carter of Newport, Vt. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister; a son-in-law Joseph DeAngelus in June 2001, and a daughter-in-law Valerie Glynn in August 2002. , 91, of 205 Peacham Road, Danville, Vt., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Katonah, N.Y. on Aug. 10, 1912, the daughter of the late George and Anna (Hughes) Schmidt. She attended schools in New York City and graduated from Julia Richmond High School. On April 25, 1936, she married Floyd Leonard Graves of Stamford, Conn. She worked at F.W. Woolworth in New York City, Price Waterhouse in Stamford, Conn. and Petro in Stamford, Conn. before she was married. Following their marriage she became a full-time homemaker, caregiver and mother. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Stamford, Conn. She and Floyd attended the Lower Waterford Church after moving to the area in 1971. She was active in numerous "church ladies" activities, first in Connecticut then in Vermont. She and Floyd assisted volunteers for several years at the annual lobster suppers in Lower Waterford. She is survived by her loving husband, Floyd Graves of Danville, Vt; by two daughters, Heidi Beecher and her husband Floyd of Laconia, N.H., and Terri Graves of Danville with whom she and Floyd shared a home; by three grandsons and their spouses; Tim Tibbals of Orange, Conn.; Michael and Maria Tibbals of Belknap, N.H. and Todd and Lynn Tibbals of Meredith, N.H.; a great-granddaughter Kendra of Belknap, N.H.; a special "niece," B.J. Liberty of Bethel, Conn.; and cousins in New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, niece and nephew in Florida; a former son-in-law Tom and Sue Tibbals of Derby, Conn. She is also survived by many loving friends, including very special caregivers Sharon Paradis and Robin Bunnell. A memorial service will be held at the Lower Waterford Congregational Church in Lower Waterford, Vt. later in the spring of 2004. , 77, of Lyndonville, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 7, 2004, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center in St. Johnsbury. He was born April 22, 1926, in Kirby, the son of the late Milo W. and Leila (Hardy) Jenkins. He was schooled in the one-room schoolhouse in North Kirby. On Aug. 22, 1948, he married Lucille E. Hutchins. Malcolm worked for Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury from 1946-1990, retiring as a scale calibrator and sealer. He later worked on the Green Team at EHV-Weidmann for 10 years. Following that, he worked part-time at St. Jay Auto, also in St. Johnsbury. In his off time, he worked rototilling many gardens throughout the years. Many knew him as "Rototiller" on the CB radio waves. Active in the Caledonia County Fair Association, Malcolm served as a corporate director and helped in any way he could. He exhibited his fine vegetables there for over 50 years. He also exhibited his antique Farmall tractors there and worked them in the tractor pulling contest and tractor rodeos. He enjoyed gardening and selling his produce at his Route 5 roadside stand. He also enjoyed going for rides and seeing the countryside. Survivors include his four children, Linda Gadapee and her husband Glendon of East Haven, Richard Jenkins and his wife PhilAnn of St. Johnsbury, Reginald Jenkins and his wife Karen of Sutton, and Marcia Jenkins and her companion Ricky Davis of Lyndonville; six grandchildren, Scott Jenkins, Robert Ball, John, Melissa, Samantha and Derrick Jenkins; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Kenneth Jenkins and his wife Bernadine of Chicago, Ill.; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jenkins of Wallingford, Conn., Wilma Dodge and her husband Ralph of Wheelock, Marguerite Beane and her husband Douglas of Lyndonville, Marjorie LaCroix and her husband Richard of Torrance, Calif., and Betty Derosier and her husband Richard of St. Johnsbury; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Lucille Jenkins; and four brothers, Ronald, William, Herbert and Donald Jenkins; and an infant sister. Funeral services will be held Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m., at the funeral home with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday evening, beginning at 6 p.m. through the start of the service, at the funeral home. , 86, a lifelong resident of Littleton N.H., died Feb. 7, 2004 at the Lafayette Nursing Home in Franconia where he had been a resident. He was born in Littleton on July 1, 1917, the son of William and Dora (Biron) Cascadden and graduated from Littleton High School in 1935. He married Rita Rousseau, also a Littleton native, in 1943. Byron served stateside in the United States Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic during World War II. After the war he returned to his job at the Railway Express Agency in Littleton where he delivered freight from the trains in the signature green truck with a pigeon on its side. He rose to manager and served for 28 years before the office was closed. He also worked as an assistant manager at Aubuchon Hardware. Byron served as custodian of Saint Rose of Lima Church and enjoyed a quiet family life. He is survived by his wife, Rita Cascadden; four sons, Creg Cascadden of Derry N.H., Marc Cascadden of Amherst, N.H., Neil Cascadden of Berlin, N.H., and Dean Cascadden of Bristol N.H.; one daughter, Sara Smith of Littleton, N.H.; one brother, Reginald Cascadden of Whitefield, N.H.; one sister, Carol Gardner, of Abbington, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Monday, Feb. 9, from 4:30-7 p.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton. , a retired construction supervisor for New England Telephone and Telegraph, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in Lebanon, N.H. He was born June 20, 1929 in Montpelier, Vt., where he grew up, son of the late Louise Kerr Hurry and Pliny Nelson Gale Sr. He married Barbara Ann Peters of Laconia, N.H. on Feb. 3, 1951. Pliny graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947, and worked in the furniture and upholstery business until 1950 when he established his own business. In 1955 he joined New England Telephone and Telegraph and embarked on a career as a lineman, installer, and construction foreman. He loved working for the "phone company," where he established life-long friendships and was a dedicated employee until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. In the early years with the company he worked with a team putting in new lines, poles and towers in remote locations in Vermont including the early communications network on Mt. Mansfield. He often related stories of working in the snow and cold with teams of horses to run the lines. Pliny had a passion for sailing. He competed in a number of Olympic Class sailboat races throughout New England and enjoyed annual ocean sailing trips with long-time friends. He loved sailing with friends and children on the Flying Dutchman and the Hobo. From an early age Pliny spent his summers and free time at Lake Groton where his father built one of the first camps on the lake. He and Barbara later built their own camp on Lake Groton and a convenience store - The Forest Store - which they owned until 1993. He was at peace in the outdoors and in the forested areas around Lake Groton. Pliny was a devoted father and grandfather, actively involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren from coaching sports teams to travel excursions. He always found time to share with children, especially the sons and daughters of family friends. They would go out to the lake to get away, walk in the woods, chew spruce gum, go sailing or just talk with Pliny. Pliny is survived by his former wife, Barbara Gale of Montpelier; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Rosalee Gale of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Peter and Marjorie Gale of Underhill, Vt.; grandsons, Scott Gale and David Gale; and nieces, Jade Northrup of Camden, S.C., Ashley Coker of Mount Pleasant S.C., and Sharon Murphy of Largo, Fla. His sister, Burtina Hetherly, and his brother, Burton, predeceased him. The family would like to acknowledge the care and support provided to Pliny by Philip and Linda Gingras at Gingras Community Care Center in Barre, Vt., where he spent the last three years of his life. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m., at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier, Vt. , 85, of Jefferson Avenue, Gilman, Vt., died Sunday morning, Feb. 8, 2004, at Country Village Genesis Eldercare, Lancaster, N.H. Mr. Scales was born in Concord, Vt., May 3, 1918, the son of John and Bertha (Alber) Scales. Raised in East Concord, he resided there until moving to Gilman in 1935 at 16 years of age to work at the local mill. He started in Kraft Bag and later the same year transferred to Milletts where they made onion bags and twine for electric wire insulation. He became foreman in this department. In 1939 they started making rug backing for wool pile rugs and he became superintendent in cellucord. On Aug. 24, 1940, he married Margurite A. Fisher. In 1943 Elwell went to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was in the European Theater in the Signal Corp. In 1945 he went back into cellucord and in 1946 was transferred to Burlington as manager of the cellucord division. Burlington was "home" for 20 years until he returned to manage the sheeting operation. In 1974 he was transferred to the position of shipping superintendent until retiring on Sept. 8, 1983. Elwell enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt (especially rabbits), fish, snowmobile and gardening. He was a member of the Gilman Methodist Church and the Gilman American Legion. Family members include his wife, Margurite of Gilman; a daughter, Carolyn M. Marshall and her husband Lane of Richmond, Vt.; a grandson, Jerry Marshall and his wife Carrie of Stowe; and a niece, Marie Blow of Burlington. A brother, Ernest Scales, and a sister, Elizabeth Villeneuve, predeceased him. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the Gilman Methodist Church. The Rev. Gerry Piper, pastor, will officiate. She attended college in Boston, Mass., and before retiring, she worked as an antique restorer and was wonderfully artistic. She is survived by her children, Cathryn C. , 85, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 9, 2004, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center where he had resided for the past several years. Born in St. Johnsbury, the son of William and Maude (Foran) Hayes, Harry will be remembered as a long-time umpire primarily for St. Johnsbury baseball programs. He enjoyed going to St. Johnsbury Academy basketball games with other St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab residents. He is survived by a son, Edward "Ted" Hodgdon and his wife Evelyn of St. Johnsbury; one sister, Margaret Kittredge of St. Johnsbury; and nieces and nephews. In May 2003 he was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Lacroix; and a nephew, Ronnie Kittredge. , "Curt or Daddy," 81, of 6 Chapel St., Lyndon, died at his residence Monday morning, Feb. 9, 2004. He was born Aug. 2, 1922 in East Haven, Vt., son of the late Perley Ray LaBay and Esther Commette LaBay Drew. He was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1941. In 1947 he married Rubie Madelyn Young. After high school he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber where he earned the Purple Heart while flying over India during World War II. Curt worked as an electrician in partnership with his father at LaBay's Electric Service in Lyndon for 20 years. He later worked for Vermont American at Tap & Die and also Northeast Tool for 17 years, retiring in 1987. After one day of retirement he volunteered at St. Johnsbury and Lyndon Town Schools. He volunteered as the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Data Collector and Computer Programmer located at the Darling Inn in Lyndonville, was an AARP volunteer tax preparer for senior citizens, and transported many friends and neighbors to doctor's appointments and treatments at DHMC in Lebanon, N.H. Survivors include three children, Frances "Fran" Taylor and her husband of Lyndon, Kathleen "Kathy" McGown of Lyndonville, and Randolph Curtis LaBay of Barre; two very special sons-in-law, Leland A. Taylor and Douglas H. McGown; five grandchildren, Molly Frances McGown, Matthew H. LaBay, Hannah M. LaBay, Adam C. LaBay, and Isaiah I. LaBay; a great-grandson, Dylan Thomas LaBay; his very dear friend, Lucy Caron of Lyndonville; twin sisters, Lorraine Newland and her husband Winston, and Elaine Willey and her husband Floyd, both of West Burke; four sisters-in-law, Mary LaBay of Lowell, Mass., Marilyn D. She was born in Barton, June 9, 1920, one of six children born to Aimee and Yvonne (Renault) Labounty. Her husband, Lyle, passed away Sept. 5, 1987. Mrs. Little was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She was active in her husband Lyle's many endeavors, particularly the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and the St. Johnsbury Lions Club. She is survived by her three children, Fred Little and his wife Robin of St. Johnsbury (17 Eastern Ave., 05819), Gloria Choate of Tustin, Calif. , 82, of 590 Center St., Lyndonville, Vt., peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family and a short courageous battle with cancer, Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. He was born March 14, 1921 in Dexter, Maine, the son of the late Roy and Sarah (Rollins) Towle. He served in the Army during World War II. He retired as a machinist from Vermont Tap & Die and began his own business of Bob Towle's Trucking. He was the past president of the Breslin Center for many years, and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW Post 10038 in Lyndonville. His wife Deloris "Dede" Towle predeceased him on April 3, 2000. They were married March 27, 1951. He was also predeceased by a brother, Roy Towle of Dexter, Maine. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Robert and Nancy Towle Jr. of Boscawen, N.H., John and Delores Towle of Grand Prairie, Texas, Brian Towle of San Diego, Calif., Richard Towle of San Diego, Calif., and Kevin and Deborah Towle of Lyndonville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his aunt, Charlotte Alderman of Lakeland, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. , 74, of Atkinson Street, Bellows Falls, Vt., died at McGirr Nursing Home, Bellows Falls, Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. Mr. Knight was born July 14, 1929 in Greenwich, Conn., the son of Ira and Rhoda (Blauvelt) Harsell. He attended schools in Greenwich, graduating from the high school there. He worked for WTWN radio station in St. Johnsbury, Vt., WBFL radio station in Bellows Falls, and for Q106 Claremont, N.H. Mr. Knight was a former member of the Kiwanis, Rotary and Masonic Temple. On April 7, 1956, in Ahoskie, N.C., he married Peggy (Greer) Knight, who died Jan. 13, 1990. He is survived by one son, William R. Knight of South Berwick, Maine; one daughter, Karen R. Owens of Sommersville, Ga.; and five grandchildren. There will be a memorial service Feb. 28, at 1 p.m., at The Bible Speaks, 224 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. There will be no calling hours.

, 69, of Vail Drive, Lyndon Center, Vt., peacefully passed away at home Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004. He was born Aug. 27, 1934 in Nashua, N.H., the son of Cedric B. Stevens and Ruth C. (Mitchell) Stevens. He was a graduate of Leominster High School, obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts in 1956, and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Vermont in 1960. His residency was at Boston City Hospital, Boston, Mass., Madigan General Hospital, Tacoma, Wash., and Burbank Hospital, Fitchburg, Mass. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army. He was a general medical officer at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., and chief of pathology and general medical officer at MacDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis, Va. He was chief of pathology and nuclear medicine at Nashoba Community Hospital from 1966-1974, and at Leominster Hospital from 1967-1989. He also had a family practice in Templeton, Mass. He was a pathologist at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Vt., from 1989-1997. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth C. (Sundin) Stevens in 1986. He will be missed by his wife, Nicole T. (Landry) Stevens of Lyndon Center, Vt.; his children, David E. Stevens of Albuquerque, N.M., Diane L (Stevens) Cosentino and her husband Dean A. Cosentino of Winchendon, Mass., Ruth E. Stevens of Lunenburg, Mass., James C. Stevens of Allston, Mass., Christopher B. Stevens and his wife Lorraine R. Hill-Stevens of Holden, Mass., and Cedric B. , formerly of Lisbon, N.H., Windsor Locks, Conn., and Milwaukee, Wis., entered into peaceful eternal rest Feb. 10, 2004 at a nursing home in Woodsville, N.H. at the age of 89. She was born Aug. 28, 1914 in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Frances Knitter Sable and Frank Sable. Louise, a gentle soul, was a devoted wife and mother and was well-known for her talents in cooking. Being gifted in life with a beautiful soprano singing voice, her greatest passion in life was opera, followed by studying Scripture and in her later years by caring for stray animals and gardening. She loved to laugh and fully enjoyed her retirement year with her witty husband, Joseph, who was the greatest love of her life. She was predeceased by her parents; four brothers, Frank, Norman, Clifford and John, and their wives; two sisters, Irene and Dolores, and their husbands; by two husbands, Harry A. Kaye and Joseph I. Czarnecki; and by her dear friend, Helen Sluzinski. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Barbera and her husband Anthony of Campbelisport, Wis., and Robin Gutterman and her husband Andrew of Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Andrew Czarnecki and his wife Sharon of Weare, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Anthony K. Barbera, Christine Braun, Susan Goode, Karen Brown, David Beatty, Joseph Czarnecki and Marlayna Keene; and nine great-grandchildren, Erik, Ronald, Dean, Monica, Michael, Lydia, Julie, Miah, Spencer and Kasey. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and friends she made during the years, and her wonderful and caring neighbors in Lisbon, N.H., especially Beverly Isenberg, Jim Harris, Eleanor LaDuke, Bob Chenevert, the Morrow family and the Fenoff family. The family will receive friends at the Ross Funeral Home, 151 South Main St., Lisbon, N.H., from 11-11:45 a.m., Feb. 14. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon, Feb. 14, at St. Catherine's Church, School Street, Lisbon. Interment will be postponed to a later date. The Rev. Daniel Sinabaldi will officiate. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Grafton County Nursing Home Association, Fund for Patients; the Lisbon, N.H. Fast Squad; or to the Alzheimer's Association.

, 79, of Newport, died peacefully Feb. 13, 2004 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Harley "Sam" Bly. Friends may call from Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 6-8 p.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road (formerly Sias Ave.), Newport, where funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Roger Fletcher officiating. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
