CARLSON: Enrita B. ....show
, known as "Rita," of Newbury, died Feb. 27, 2001, at the Oasis Home in Bradford. She was born at her family';s homeplace on Brock Hill in West Newbury, Dec. 21, 1900. Her parents were Moses L. Brock and A. Louise Page. She looked forward to turning 100 years old; that milestone was celebrated this past December at a party with friends and family. While Rita was on her parents'; farm, she enjoyed being outside and doing chores. In later years she enjoyed talking about working around the horses and riding them back and forth to school. She attended schools in Newbury, graduating from Newbury High School in 1918. After she graduated, she took teacher training and taught at the Ladd Street School in Haverhill, N.H. Later, Rita worked as a cashier for Phoenix Mutual Insurance in Massachusetts. She married Alfred Carlson in 1933 and together they bought a small farm on Jefferson Hill in Newbury. Rita started selling insurance. She did very well as she didn';t mind trudging into barnyards or barns to see the farmers with whom she dealt. She often recalled that, while she and the parents would be sitting at the kitchen table discussing insurance, the parents would often tell the children to "run along." Rita would say, "No, let them stay. How else are they going to learn?" That was Rita, always the teacher. Rita served on the town school district board and as chair of the town Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment in Newbury. Rita had many loves in her life. She loved teaching, children, the insurance business, helping people whenever she could, fishing and hunting, but her greatest love was her husband, Alfred, who died in 1972. She is survived by her brother Stanley, who lives on the home farm; her nephews, Terry Brock of Greenville, N.C., and Alfred Brock of Barre; three grandnieces and one grandnephew. At Rita';s request there will be no services or calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Newbury Town School District for the Abe Wells general scholarship fund or the playground fund. Woods-Trefren and Pearsons Funeral Service, 70 Church St., Lyndonville, is assisting with arrangements.
