HARTWELL: Warren P. ....show , of East Haven, Vt., died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, at the age of 88. He was born in East Haven, Nov. 9, 1912, the son of Percy and Myrtie (Lee) Hartwell. He served his country overseas during World War II in the U.S. Army. Warren was a logger and farmer for many years. He had worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps for one year. He served his home town of East Haven as lister for three years, as well as overseer of the poor. He also served as sexton of the East Haven Cemetery for eight years and Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke for three years. A man who loved the out-of-doors, he worked for Burke Mountain as a ski lift operator for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post 10038 in Lyndonville. Hunting and fishing were Warren's favorite hobbies. Survivors include his sister, Althea Hartwell of Barton; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Turcotte of St. Johnsbury; four stepsisters, Ruth Lund, Myrtle Kimball, Isabelle DeCoursey and Bernice Lane; and his nephew, Waid Hudson and his wife April of Island Pond. Warren was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Mary (Graves) Hartw and by two sisters, Rita Perry and Doris Hilliard. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at East Haven Cemetery with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. MARTIN: Vernal May ....show , of St. Johnsbury, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, at the age of 75. She was born in Brattleboro, June 8, 1926, the daughter of Eugene and Susan (Scranton) Duby. Survivors include her three children, Joseph and wife Debby Martin Jr. of Queensbury, N.Y., Linda Martin of Lyndon, and Anita and husband Richard Leighton of Athol, Mass.; two sisters, Muriel and husband Wayne Walker of Connecticut, and Winona Ladd of Woodstock, Vt.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Martin Sr.; a daughter, Gail Marie Martindale; a brother, Melbourne Duby, and a sister, Myrtis Bradeen. Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. BROOKS: Wilmer Ira "Brooksie," ....show 80, of Newark, died Friday afternoon, June 22, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction. He was born July 21, 1920, in Randolph, Vt., the son of Charles and Ruth Vivian (Clifford) Brooks. He attended schools in Sharon and South Royalton, Vt. He worked for a short time in the shipyards in Maine before entering the service. Brooksie served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medical technician. After the war, he returned to Sharon and in 1948 opened Brooksie's Restaurant. With great pride, he explained how it started with only seven stools and two booths, and grew to seat 165 customers. Brooksie had other business ventures, including helping to develop the Chandler Farms are in Wilder, Vt., by building several houses. He also bought and sold other real estate throughout his life. On July 21, 1973, he married Elizabeth G. Gibbs. Together, he and "Betty," besides operating one of the area's most popular eateries, also ran one of the first and most successful catering businesses in the Twin States. They catered functions from Burlington to Massachusetts, from the Shriners Parade in Hanover, N.H., to large corporate functions in southern Massachusetts. One of Brooksie's largest jobs was serving over 5,000 steaks at a company picnic in Bloomfield, Conn. He and his wife catered several Shriners conventions and Republican Party conventions at the Barre Auditorium, serving the likes of Vice President Spiro Agnew and then-Governor Ronald Reagan of California. They sold the restaurant in 1983, but to this day it still operates under the name "Brooksie's." After retirement they summered in Newark and wintered in Florida for several years before moving permanently to their house in Newark. Brooksie was a 50-year member of the Sharon Lodge 105 F & AM, as well as a member of the Hartford Elks Lodge and the Heartland Lions Club in South Royalton. He enjoyed puttering in his workshop and hunting with his wife. He also enjoyed eating out. He is survived by his wife of Newark; a daughter, Betty Jane Merchand of Oak Hill, Fla.; a sister, Ona Forty of Barton; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ina Nye, last year. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Sharon Congregational Church, with the Rev. Douglas Moore officiating. A Masonic service will also he held at the church before going to Pine Hill Cemetery for the committal service. MORENCY: Rita L. ....show , 79, of 95 Cross Ave. in St. Johnsbury Center (St. Johnsbury, VT 05819), passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born in St. Johnsbury, April 27, 1922, the daughter of Alcide and Leda (Fournier) Morency. Preceding her in death were her father in 1979, her mother in 1987, and her brother, the Rev. Rosario A. Morency, in 1991. She is survived by her sister, Claire G. Morency, with whom she lived, and several cousins. A lifelong resident of St. Johnsbury, Rita graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy in 1941. Before beginning her career with the Vermont State Employment Service in 1950, she worked as a candy packer at Maple Grove, and later as a dental assistant for Dr. Perley Hartwell. Rita retired from the Vermont State Employment Service in 1980 as an employment counselor, a very satisfying career to her. Over the years many people approached her to say, "You got me my job 25 years ago!" Rita was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and served on many committees. In recent years, she aided Father Lively in setting up his communion calls. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 2 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Committal services will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon for all relatives and friends will follow at the Lincoln Inn. SHELTRY: Richard "Dick" William ....show , 79, of RFD 1, Groveton, N.H., died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Country Village Genesis Care Center in Lancaster after a long illness. He was born at home in Groveton, Sept. 25, 1921, to Edward E. and Ila (Spencer) Sheltry. Mr. Sheltry graduated from Groveton High School, Class of 1939. He married Margaret McKearney April 11, 1944. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor at Groveton Paper Company since the age of 18. He lost his arm in an industrial accident and after healing was able to return to work with the company for a total of 47 years. Richard was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church, past president of Groveton Parents Teachers Association, helped form and was a member of the Groveton Fish and Game Club (he loved fishing and hunting), and spent many hours at Nash Stream Bog. He was a past member of the Groveton Moose Club. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his grandchildren and gardening. Members of his family include his wife of 57 years, Margaret E. (McKearney) Sheltry of Groveton; one son, Stephen Edward Sheltry of Monroe, N.H.; two daughters, Mrs. David (Brenda Joyce) Dowst and Charlotte A. Fotion, both of Sunapee, N.H.; nine grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. HODGE: Harry Holt ....show , 90, of Maple Valley Farm, 39 Gale Chandler Road, Landaff, N.H., passed away at the Littleton Regional Hospital, Aug. 11, 2001. A native of Landaff, he was born a son of Harry H. and Margaret (Dowdell) Hodge, Dec. 7, 1910. Harry grew up in Landaff and was a life-long resident. Previous to enlisting in the U.S. Army in World War II, he worked on the family farm and began his career as a lumberman. Mr. Hodge was self-employed and the general manager of Hodge & Pickering, a power line clearing company with operations in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. He was an avid horseman having kept several over the years. During the first year of World War II, Harry served in the U.S. Army Equestrian Unit, based in Washington, D.C., before being assigned in the South Pacific Theater. Mr. Hodge was very active in several fraternal organizations, including Grafton-Kane Lodge F. & A.M., Scottish and York Rites, Odd Fellows Lodge, Mt. Hope 77 and Pomona Granges. Harry held many posts, including past master in most of these groups. He especially had a talent for memorization that helped him engage in officiating over many of the fraternal groups' rituals and ceremonies. He was a faithful public servant and held offices in the Landaff Selectmen's Office, fire warden, police chief and road agent for the town of Landaff. He consistently wrote poetry over the past 50 years. Surviving family members include his wife, Jessie (Croall) Hodge of Landaff; two stepdaughters, Jeanie R. McLaughlin of Lincoln, N.H., and Judith R. Boulet of North Woodstock, N.H.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother and three sisters, and his first wife, Corinna (Hedges) Hodge. The family will greet and receive friends and relatives, Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 6-8 p.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, Lisbon, N.H., during which there will be a Masonic Service of Farewell at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m., at the Landaff Methodist Church, with the Rev. BRONSON: Clara L. ....show , 87, of North Ferrisburgh, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born April 26, 1914, in Shoreham. She was the daughter of Anton and Catherine (Katie) Kubin Johanis. She married Wymond M. Bronson, Aug. 6, 1934. He predeceased her on Dec. 19, 1998. Clara is survived by a daughter, Sheila Fors and husband the Rev. Martin of Lyndon Center; a son, Verne Bronson of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Brisson of Rutland; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Charlene Bronson; a sister, Helen Davis; and a brother, Edward Johanis. FITCH: Dr. Perry Moore ....show , 93, of 400 Webber Road, Spartanburg, S.C., died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at his home. A native of St. Johnsbury and a resident of Spartanburg since 1999, he was the son of the late Dr. Willis B. and Marion Moore Fitch and the husband of the late Priscilla Barber Fitch. He was a retired dentist, having practiced in Newport from 1936 until 1983. He served on the Vermont Board of Dental Examiners and was formerly president of the Vermont State Dental Society. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newport, where he had served as vestryman and church treasurer. A member of Newport Rotary Club, he had served as president and was a Paul Harris fellow. Dr. Fitch was an honorary lifetime member of Border Curling Club, and the Newport Country Club, and received the Silver Beaver Award from Boy Scouts of America. He was a volunteer for the North Country Hospital with over 3,000 hours of service and was active in the Newport Chamber of Commerce Information Booth. He was a 1930 graduate of Tufts University and a 1934 graduate of Tufts University Dental School. He attended the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, and was a volunteer with Mobile Meals Services. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Willis B. and Elizabeth H. Fitch of Spartanburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara F. and Lawrence W. Vincent of Somerset, Mass.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nancy G. Fitch of St. Johnsbury; a sister, Katherine F. Chesley of Mount Dora, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Dr. Richard Fitch. A Memorial Eucharist will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner and the Rev. Donald Chapman. The family will receive friends following the services in the church parlor. Burial of ashes will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Derby, at a later date. She was born in Browns Hill, Quebec, July 19, 1922, the daughter of Homer and Mamie (Howe) Davis. On June 6, 1940, she married Reginald W. Simpson. Mrs. Simpson was a former member of the Lyndon Womens Club and the Village Improvement Society. She also was a Rotary-Ann of the Lyndonville Rotary Club and was an active member of the Lyndonville First Congregational Church. Survivors include a son, Jackson R. Simpson and his wife Charlotte of West Burke; two daughters and their husbands, Pamela and Dan Kvam of Sutton, and Debra and Brian Kimball of Coventry; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Davis of Lyndonville; a sister, Natalie Boulrisse of Winooski; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald W. Simpson, in 1983; her grandson, Todd Rainey, in 1982; and two brothers, Gardner Davis and Bill Davis. ROBSHAM: Christopher Buck ....show , 48, Monroe, N.H., passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, Aug. 12, 2001, surrounded by his loving family and his good friends. Chris was born June 28, 1953, in Hyannis, Mass., of Leonard and Louise (Buck) Robsham, and lived most of his life and graduated from high school in Yarmouth, Mass., in 1971. He was a fisherman and he loved the sea. Before his health began to fail him he owned and operated his "Fancy Fish Company" in Hyannis, Mass. Chris and his family fell in love with New Hampshire's North Country and settled in Monroe in 1987. It was in Monroe that he developed a passion for bluegrass music and he played and listened whenever he could. Chris was predeceased by his parents and his brother, William Barr Robsham. He is survived by his son, William Barr "Bill" Robsham II, 16, of Monroe; two sisters and their husbands, Lisa and Don Thimas of West Yarmouth, Mass., Tina and Bill Pratt of North Yarmouth, Maine; his brother, Dan Robsham of Aventura, Fla.; and several aunts and uncles of the Cape Cod area. He is also survived by his lifelong friends, Tony Brum of Mashpee, Mass., and Victor Brum of Phoenix, Ariz.; and his companion, Susan Aiken of St. Johnsbury. A memorial gathering will be held in Chris' honor at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Boulevard in Bourne, Mass., Thursday, from 5-7 p.m. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Hospice of Littleton, N.H., or of St. Johnsbury, Vt. Chris' friends in the Monroe area plan a gathering in the near future. A potluck picnic and a bluegrass pickin' party is what he would like best. Before retiring in 1984, he worked as a truck driver for Agri-Mark of New England, he also worked for Yankee Milk and DeArli Trucking in Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Beverly (Johnson) Delnicki of Wheelock; his daughter and her husband, Donna and Emil Prucha of Sutton, and their children, Nathan, Melissa, Amy and Loren; his son, Ronald Delnicki of Pembroke, Maine, and his sons Brent and Billy; a granddaughter, Michele; two step-sons, Eric Beaumann of Ellington, Conn., and Sherman Beaumann of Moodus, Conn.; and a brother and his wife, Donald and Denise Delnicki of Arizona. EMERSON: Virginia R. ....show , 91, of Vergennes, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury. She was born July 7, 1910, in Medway, N.Y., the daughter of the Rev. John C. and Minnie (Congleton) Emerson II. Virginia was a member of the Vergennes Congregational Church. She and her sister Eleanor operated the Boulders Summer Resort in Westmore on Lake Willoughby for about 40 years. Virginia moved to Vergennes in 1988. She is survived by a brother, John C. Emerson III of Vergennes; two sisters, Urania Ewin of Florida, and Shirley Clark of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Lillian Perrier, Jessie Birdyshaw and Eleanor Emerson. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Vergennes Congregational Church. WHEELER: Arnold S. ....show , 82, passed away Aug. 15, 2001. He was born in Craftsbury, Sept. 14, 1918, the son of Charles and Emily Stevens Wheeler. Arnold spent his adult life in the Barnet-Peacham area. He worked for many years on the Paul Nelson Farm in Barnet Center. After retirement he lived with the Bernard Churchill family in Peacham until poor health forced him to enter the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. WHITCOMB: Donna P. (Cady) ....show , 59, of Lyndonville, died suddenly, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, in Hartford, Vt. She was born in St. Johnsbury, March 20, 1942, the daughter of Herbert J. Lumbra and Nina (Gilman) Cady. Raised in Sheffield, she was a 1960 graduate of Lyndon Institute. On July 10, 1962, she married David H. Whitcomb. Donna worked as a data entry person for 15 years at the St. Johnsbury Trucking office on Main Street. During the last eight years she worked at Ames Department Store in St. Johnsbury, where she was a cashier and also in charge of the 55 Gold Club table on Tuesdays. She enjoyed helping and talking to people wherever she went. Donna enjoyed playing the piano and also played the clarinet in the St. Johnsbury Town Band for several years. She was a devoted wife and mother. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, David H. Whitcomb of Lyndonville; their son and his wife, Darryl J. and Nicki Whitcomb of St. Johnsbury; her brother and his wife, Clark and Elsie Cady of Lyndon; her sister, Marylee Cady of St. Johnsbury; her brother-in-law and his wife, Keith and Denise Whitcomb of Sheffield; her uncle and aunt, Paul and Maggie Berry of Lyndon; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Lyndon Center Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joel Battaglia officiating. Burial will follow in Lyndon Center Cemetery. BEAN: Eunice Remick ....show , 81, formerly of St. Johnsbury, went to be with our Lord, Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center, Lyndonville. Mrs. Bean was born May 18, 1920, in Concord, Vt., to William and Mabel (Morton) Remick, and was a lifelong resident of the Northeast Kingdom. She graduated from Concord High School in 1938 and was the valedictorian. On July 2, 1938, she married Dennison D. Bean, and they were married for 58 years. She was employed at Hovey's Shops for 28 years before retiring. For many years after her retirement she and her husband enjoyed spending summers in Vermont and winters in Florida. Her interests centered around family and home. She enjoyed baking, gardening, swimming, restoring homes, walking and reading. She was always there to lend a helping hand and a friendly smile. Mrs. Bean was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Bean of St. Johnsbury; her son, David Bean and his wife Ruth Ann of St. Joseph, Mich.; six grandchildren, James Granville, Janey Walton, Holly Mix, Jared Forbes, Melissa Ferrell, and Jody Gillespie; four great-grandchildren, Christina Mix, Mitchell Forbes, Felicia LaCoss and Maxwell Gillespie; her brother, William Remick of Hartford, Vt.; and several other family members and close friends. Mrs. Bean was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Gertrude Gillander and Helena Bradshaw; brother Morton Remick; and great-grandson Gregory Matthew Mix. There will be no calling hours. Marjorie was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Cohasset, Mass., to Joseph and Catherine (Ennice) Oliver. While growing up in Cohasset, she developed a lifelong love for the ocean, the beach and seafood. She graduated form Cohasset High School in 1939. She married Robert H. Toombs April 21, 1946. He predeceased her April 13, 1984. Marjorie was a co-owner of Topo's Restaurant and the Village Shoppe in Lyndonville for a number of years. Marjorie and her husband moved to Spring Hill, Fla., in 1982. In 1994 Marjorie returned to Lyndonville and took up residence at the Darling Inn. Mar sively in the United States, Mexico and Europe. She was also an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic supporter of youth sports in the Lyndon area. She and her husband were the driving forces in the early development of ice hockey for young people in this region. Marjorie is survived by three sons, Robert O. Toombs and his wife Ellie of Mansfield, Pa., and Edwin J. Toombs and Richard H. Toombs, both of Spring Hill, Fla.; a daughter, Brenda Toombs Sweet and her husband Dennis of Lyndon Center; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Florida Hills Memorial Gardens in Brooksville, Fla., at a later date. DOWNING: Lillian B. ....show , 78, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford, Vt. She was born April 28, 1923, in Fletcher, Vt., the daughter of Homer and Alice (Taylor) Aiken. She attended school in Cambridge, Vt. On June 30, 1939, she married Edgar R. Downing in Chelsea, Vt. They lived in Chelsea for two years before following logging operations throughout the central Vermont area for Edgar's work. They moved to Corinth, Vt., in 1955, and lived there until they moved to Newbury in 1989. Lillian enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She also loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, of Corinth; a son, Richard Downing of Newbury; three daughters, Arloa Whitcher of Corinth, Elaine Smith of Topsham, Joyce Barbara of West Newbury; a brother, Leslie "Tom" Aiken of North Bennington; a sister, Barbara Buick of Walden; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Downing. Friends may call Monday, Aug. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vt. BIRD: Edward E. ....show , 72, of Danville, died late Friday evening, Aug. 17, 2001, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 12, 1929, in Craftsbury, the son of Perley and Annabell (Norton) Bird. He attended Craftsbury public schools and Lyndon State College in Lyndon. On Aug. 30, 1952, he married Janet Rae Potter in Morrisville. He entered the U.S. Air Force July 7, 1948 in Montpelier. He served his tour of duty in Texas and Alaska, and was honorably discharged July 4, 1952 at Reese Air Force Base in Texas. Edward was employed for many years by the St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. and later for A.D. Sanel Inc., both in St. Johnsbury. He retired in the mid-1970s due to failing health. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7 of Hardwick, as well as a past member of the Masonic Order F & AM of Danville. Other enjoyments included fishing, reading and Sunday drives throughout the area. Survivors include his wife, Janet of Danville; a son, Dale Bird and his companion Janet Powers of West Burke; two daughters, Darcia Bird of Danville, and Deborah Peck and her husband Jerold of North Danville; six grandchildren, Jenna Bird and Jill Bird, both of St. Johnsbury, Sonya Bird of Colchester, David Peck and his wife Rebecca of Boston, Mass., Jeremy Peck and his wife Nicole of Runnemede, N.J., and Samuel Edward Peck of North Danville; two great-grandchildren, Austin Bird of Colchester, and Anthony Peck of Runnemede, N.J.; three sisters, Bertha Owen of South Barre, and Helen Billings and Iola Richardson, both of Hardwick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Edward was predeceased by five brothers, William, Charles, Louis, Burton and Elmer. To honor his request there will be no visiting hours. BEDARD: Lorraine L. ....show , 61, of 15 Hill St., Lyndonville, died Saturday morning, Aug. 18, 2001, at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor. She was born in Manchester, N.H., Feb. 2, 1940, the daughter of Francis and Jeanette (Dufort) Maloney. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene W. Bedard Jr., Dec. 9, 1993. Earlier in her life, Lorraine lived in Lyndonville with her grandmother and aunt, Zenaide Duford and Rose Dufort, on Pinehurst Street, until a fire forced the family to move to Manchester, N.H. There she became employed at Dorson-Fleisher Shoe Co. In 1981 she married and returned to Lyndonville. Lorraine was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Church in Lyndonville. She was a very active member of VFW Post 10038. She loved bingo and ran the bingo program at the post for several years. She is survived by a brother, Anthony B. Mahoney and his wife Simone of Manchester, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church in Lyndonville, Wednesday, at 11 a.m., with the pastor, the Rev. Stephen Nichols, celebrant. , 86, of Newport, passed away Friday, April 27, 2001, after a short illness. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., Nov. 22, 1914, the son of Andrew and Gertrude (Fairfield) Green. Bill had made his home in Newport with his wife Shirley, who predeceased him in January, for over 35 years. He was a member of Memphremagog Lodge 65 F & AM, and a past member of the Newport Elks Club. Through the years Bill was an ardent outdoorsman. He was a ski instructor at both Pico and Suicide Six ski areas and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and family at his camp at Lewis Pond, which he owned for over 38 years. Bill was also an avid bowler in his younger years and took home many championship trophies. Bill joined the Vermont State Police in 1947 and was the last of the original 25 officers that made up that organization. Besides being one of the first troopers, he was also the first to have a working police dog, which was the start of the present canine units. He retired as a lieutenant in 1970. Shortly after that he won election for sheriff of Orleans County and it was under his direction that the department started growing to what it is today. In 1939 he and Ruth Akey, who predeceased him in 1958, were married and had four sons who survive him, Delwyn and wife Nancy of Derby, William Jr. and wife Susan of Gainesville, Fla., Robert and wife Joan of Newport, and Richard and wife Cam of Derby. Bill married Shirley Newtown Young in 1959 and gained another son and a daughter who survive him, David Young and friend Elizabeth Gamage of Falmouth Forside, Maine, and Sandra Fowler and husband Jack of Wayne, Maine. He is also survived by his grandchildren Shawn of Derby, Shane of Derby Line, Travis of St. Petersburg, Fla., Trace of Ocala, Fla., Derek of Kissimmee, Fla., Tyler of Jay, Sawyer and Saigelyn of Derby, and Sasha of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Gordon, of South Royalton; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters. He thought a lot of his friends Jerry and Lillian Dickerman, Ray and Elsie Ladue, Dean and Olive Gardner, and the rest of the "Pine Street Gang;" also Ross and Lillian Whipple, Paula Thibodeau and Nadine Thomas, all of the surrounding Newport area. Carlton and Agnes (Dodge) Chickering, and had resided in Ayer for 50 years. She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy in 1932, and the Mary Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington in 1940. During World War II Mrs. Stepleton served her country as a registered nurse in the United States Army. While assigned to the Walter Reed General Hospital, she attained the rank of captain. She continued her nursing career at the former Cutler Army Hospital, Fort Devens, Mass., before retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Ayer Golden Agers and was an active member of the Loaves and Fishes Program. She is survived by a daughter, Denise M. Stepleton of Ayer; and two brothers, Leo Chickering of Naples, Fla., and Rolfe Chickering of Hinesburg, Vt. She was the mother of the late Diane M. Stepleton of Ayer, who died in December 2000, and the sister of the late Carlton Chickering of Danbury, Conn., and Kenneth Chickering of Hardwick. For 32 years she worked for Whitney Chain-Division of Dresser Industries in Hartford, Conn., retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Center Congregational Church. , 75, of St. Johnsbury, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in St. Johnsbury July 16, 1925, the son of Harry and Dorothy (Rice) Knapp. A member of the St. Johnsbury Academy Class of 1943, Charlie served his country during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps, in the South Pacific Islands. After his service, he was in the Marine Guard for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Charles DeGaulle of France at the Washington Navy Yard. On Nov. 14, 1946, he married Edith (Ford), who predeceased him Feb. 25, 1999. Charlie worked many years for Central Vermont Public Service until his retirement. A strong member of the St. Johnsbury community, he was active in many areas, including ambulance services, from the first ambulance run from Brightlook Hospital to many years working for CALEX. He was a member of the North Congregational Church, VFW Post 793, American Legion Post 58, and Passumpsic Lodge 27, where he earned a 50-year pin. Charlie was an avid supporter of the St. Johnsbury Academy athletic program, where he was always seen cheering on the teams. He loved the woods and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth and husband Paul Mayette of North Haverhill, N.H., and Patricia and husband Roy Clark of Stowe; two beloved granddaughters, Brittany and Katherine Clark of Stowe; a brother-in-law, Gilman and wife Avis Ford of West Burke; and several nieces and a nephew of whom he was very fond. , 92, passed away Monday afternoon, April 30, 2001, at Country Village Eldercare in Lancaster, N.H. She was born Dec. 24, 1908, the first child of Harvard and Eva Davidson Dodge. Marguerite married Leslie E. Maxfield in 1926 in Tunbridge, Vt., and they moved to North Hartland in 1945. Divorced in 1959, Marguerite graduated from Russell Sage Junior College in Albany in 1961. In 1962, she married Charles T. Richardson of Marlborough, N.H., where she resided until his death in 1970. She then made her home near her youngest daughter and family in Hartland, Vt., until moving with them to Lunenburg in 1986. She was an active member of the Holstein-Friesian Association for many years, attending many state and national conventions. She also wrote many articles for the Holstein-Friesian World Magazine. In later years, Marge, as she preferred to be called, was a passionate square dancer and caller. She attended many square dance conventions and workshops all over the U.S., including Hawaii. She also traveled extensively in the 1960s and 1970s to Mexico, Europe and Peru. She compiled and wrote her memoirs, which she had published in book form in 1997. This overview of her very active life is available to any who would be interested by contacting her daughter, Lorna, in Lunenburg. She was also a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She leaves her children and their spouses, Elizabeth "Betty" and Adrian Frary of Tunbridge, Vt. and Brooksville, Fla., Louis and Peggy Maxfield of North Hartland, Vt., and Fort Pierce, Fla., Marjory and Hugh Conley of Tavares, Fla., Robert and Nancy Maxfield of Quechee, Vt., Bernice "Bunny" and Richard Aldrich of Rougemont, N.C., and Lorna and Chester Eaton of Lunenburg; three step-daughters, Priscilla and William Yardley of Marlborough, N.H., Ellie and Roger Adams of Westmoreland, N.H., and Thelma MacKenzie; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Libby" Dodge of Tunbridge; 19 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands; her brother, Edgar Dodge; one son, Richard Maxfield; and one grandson, Thad Lesle Eaton. There will be no calling hours or service at this time. Born Feb. 11, 1926, in Waterville, Maine, the son of Joseph A. and Sarah (Pinette) Houle, he was a lifelong resident of Groveton. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Church, the American Legion Post 17 Groveton, and the Loyal Order of Moose, Groveton. He loved to drive around and see the scenery. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He learned barbering while in the Navy, then was a barber and owned his own shop in Groveton for over 50 years. Mr. Houle is survived by two daughters, Barbara Brunet of Biddeford, Maine, and Sharon Houle of Escondido, Calif.; two granddaughters; five great-grandsons; and one brother, Frank Houle of Massachusetts. She was born in Concord, Vt., Aug. 20, 1909, one of eight children born to Charles and Louisa (Williams) Rook. She was a 1926 graduate of Concord High School. Always employed in library service, Winnie was the children's librarian at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum from 1957-1981. She traveled extensively, loved her gardening, her Boston Bruins and her Boston Red Sox. She is survived by a son, Richard E. Cutting and wife Patricia of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; a daughter, Natalie Rodd and husband William of St. Johnsbury; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved friends. She was predeceased by three brothers, Albert "John" Rook, Cecil Rook, and Frederick Rook; and by four sisters, Rose Isham, Gwendolyn Hooper, Mabel Calacci, and Louis Robinson. On Sept. 28, 1952, she married Robert A. Norcross, who survives her in St. Johnsbury. Since 1956 Bob and Marilyn had run Norcross Office Equipment, from which they both recently retired. A graduate of Lyndon Institute Class of 1951, she was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. Other survivors include four children, Richard and wife Wendy Norcross of East Burke, Carol and husband John Reynolds of Stannard, Linda and husband Martin Lomasney of East Burke, and Katherine Norcross of East Burke; a brother and his wife Robert and Jeannette Farmer of Waterford; seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. , 101, passed away at the Lafayette Health Care Center in Franconia, N.H., May 2, 2001. Mrs. Berlin, N.H., Dec. 12, 1899, a daughter of Charles and Julia (Colette) Jalbert. She grew up in the Berlin community, attending the local schools. After leaving school, Evelyn worked at assorted jobs in the restaurants and inns that were located in the Berlin-Gorham area. She did this type of work until the age of 24, when she met and married Judge Crawford Dawes Hening. After her husband of 21 years departed, Mrs. Hening moved to Durham with her son, where she worked as a housekeeper for the president of the University of New Hampshire. Eventually she returned to the North Country. She had been a resident of Franconia for the past several years. She was a life-long reader and enjoyed sewing. Surviving family members include two grandsons, Dr. John C. Hening of Durango, Colo., and Scott D. Hening of Whitefield, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn S. Cady of Littleton; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, March 1, 1944; her only child, John C. Hening, Aug. 27, 1990; and a sister, Laura J. Smyth. Graveside services will be held in the Elmwood Cemetery in Franconia at a future date.

She was born in St. Johnsbury Aug. 1, 1920, the daughter of Charles and Marion (Bisson) Prevost. Her husband, Germaine "Jimmy" Maurice," passed away May 19, 1993. She worked as a telephone operator for New England Tel & Tel, and was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. Claire and Jimmy shared a love of music which expressed itself in their participation in the parish choir and local musical theater. They met through the Notre Dame des Victoires Boissonault youth club. Their greatest joy was always their home and family, a tradition she continued after Jimmy's death with her daughter Sue, residing together at their Pleasant Street home. She is survived by four children, Lucille Maistros and husband Christopher of Havre de Grace, Md., Raymond Maurice and fiancee Cindy Jerry of Bradford, Richard Maurice and wife Karen of Street, Md., and Susan Maurice of St. Johnsbury; five grandchildren; two sisters, Cecile Smith and husband Stewart of St. Johnsbury, and Irene Cantin of Lancaster, N.H.; and cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles Prevost and Raymond Prevost. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. , 47, of Lyman Road, Lyman, N.H., passed away Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Littleton Regional Hospital, after a valiant struggle with a series of illnesses. She was born in Brockton, Mass., Dec. 1, 1953, a daughter of Edward E. and Cora "Betty" (Sherman) Harvey. Ellen attended Brockton schools and later went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Springfield College. She had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for a number of years prior to her disability, most recently for the Lisbon Post Office. Ellen had also worked for the New Hampshire DES and Century 21, both in Littleton. She was a special education teacher for many years in Delaware and New Hampshire. Before moving to New Hampshire, she had resided in East Weymouth, Mass. Ellen loved the theater and the arts in general. She volunteered with the Weathervane Theater of Whitefield, N.H., and was involved with a Haitian adoption program in the North Country. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Littleton and she enjoyed assisting with the All Saints Sacred Dancers, with which her daughter is a dancer. She enjoyed travel and made a trip to Ireland in May 2000 with this group. Surviving family members include her daughter, Jocellyn H. Harvey of Lyman; and a sister, Dolores A. Noyes-Williams of Stafford, Va. She was predeceased by her mother, father, and a sister, Cora E. "Snookie" Noyes-Nickless. A memorial service will be held at the All Saints Episcopal Church of Littleton, Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Barbara Thrall officiating. The service will incorporate services of remembrance for Cora "Betty" Harvey, who passed away Feb. 18, 2001. Both Ellen and her mother will be interred in the Old North Cemetery of North Weymouth, Mass., at a future date. 60, well known business man of Island Pond, died suddenly Thursday, May 3, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1940, in Burlington, the son of Leonard and Roseanne (Poutre) Gaboriault. On June 1, 1963, he married Gloria (Worth) Gaboriault. Mr. Gaboriault was a third-generation owner of the Island Pond Feed Store, now called Island Pond True Value Hardware Store. From 1961 to 1965 he served in the Vermont Air National Guard. He was a deputy game warden from 1977 to 1983, he served on the Brighton Rescue Squad from 1975 until 1981, on the Brighton Fire Department and as Fire Chief from 1977 to 1984, on the Brighton Board of Selectmen from 1975 to 1977, and on the Brighton Planning Commission from 1977 to 1990. Among his hobbies he enjoyed fishing, golfing in Canada, and gardening. He is survived by his children, Stuart Gaboriault and wife, Holly, of Island Pond, Paul Gaboriault and friend Rhonda Smith of Derby, Stacy Button and her husband, Richard, of North Troy; his stepmother, Florence Gaboriault of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; four grandchildren, Gerrid, Brittany, Moriah, and Connor; a brother, Raymond Gaboriault and his wife, Nancy, of Berlin, N.H.; a sister, Rachel Hayward and her husband, Jack, of Tilton, N.H.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, a special friend, Theresa Desbiens of Island Pond, and his friend Tom Cartier of Florida. , 87, of Jefferson, N.H., died Monday morning, May 7, 2001, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. Mr. Lauzon was born in Chartierville, Quebec, Canada, April 26, 1914, the son of Edmond and Corrine (Gregoire) Lauzon. Raised in Canada, he worked as a woodsman his whole life. In 1945 he married Louise J. Couture at St. Albert's Church, Stewartstown, N.H. For several years they resided in Groton, Vt., and for over 40 years they have lived in Jefferson. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and watching baseball and "Jeopardy" on television. Family members include his wife of Jefferson; two sons, Yvan Lauzon of Jefferson, and Michael Lauzon of Groton; a daughter, S. Marguerite Davis of Whitefield; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; and two brothers and five sisters, who all reside in Canada. He was predeceased by a daughter, Hughette Lauzon, in 1959, and a son, Antonio Lauzon, in 1998. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Jefferson. , lost his battle with lung cancer, Monday, May 7, 2001, at his home in Whitefield, N.H. He was born Dec. 30, 1927, in Whitefield, a son of Ray and Daisy Sias. His early childhood was spent in and around Lisbon, N.H. His high school years were spent in Coventry, Vt., where he lived with his uncle, George Sias, and helped run the farm while attending Orleans High School, graduating in the Class of 1946. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, served two years in Korea, and returned to Lisbon in 1948. In his early 50s, he moved to Littleton, where he was active in coaching Little League and the Babe Ruth League. Arthur worked at Connors and Hoffman Footwear, and later as a foreman in the cutting room of Henschel Shoe Factory. In 1976, he and his wife moved to Whitefield, where they opened Nee-Mo's Nook Antique Shop, which they operated for 25 years, until his illness forced him to close the shop. Surviving family includes his wife of 46 years, Elaine (Blodgett) Sias of Whitefield; a daughter, Jackie and husband Roy Sebas of Milford, Conn.; three sons, Arthur Jr. and wife Ellen of East Windsor, Conn., George and fianc? Pam of Concord, Vt., and Stanley and wife Julie of Georges Mills, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Sias of Newbury, N.H.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Emma Hrichak of Enfield, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. She attended local schools and worked as a stitcher for Manchester Knitting Company and Connors & Hoffman. She owned and operated the Hill Top Snack Bar for 12 years and later worked for the Globe in Littleton. She loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will always be remembered for being there for her family whenever they needed someone to talk to or just to listen. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Elwin Wright Sr. of Whitefield; two sons, Elwin and Claire Wright Jr. of Lancaster, and Stanley and Bonnie Wright of Whitefield; a daughter, Eleanor and Wayne Lawrence of Barre; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alfred Magoon of Belmont, N.H. She enjoyed reading, craftwork and visits to camp at Shadow Lake in Glover. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Robb and her friend Fred Costey, of Ellenton, Fla., and Linda Imler and her husband David of Everett, Pa.; a son, Graydon Gile Jr. and his wife Dee of Greensboro Bend; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; cousins, nieces and nephews; and her beloved poodle, Brandy. , 88, Irasburg, passed away in Newport on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001. He was born in Milton on July 12, 1913, the son of George and Ida (Flemings) Machia. Charles worked as a sawyer for the Bordnes Lumber Co. in Massachusetts. He enjoyed his family, hunting, dancing and playing his harmonica; earlier in life, he enjoyed going to camp with his brother. On Dec. 18, 1935, Charles married the former Larena L. Jones, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Irving G. Machia of Falls Village, Conn.; Frederica Valinaggia and her husband, John, of Hudson, Fla.; Alice Forrest of West Gardner, Maine; Florence Gordon of North Adams, Mass.; Beverly J. Dalmasa and her husband, Francis, of Great Barrington, Mass.; Mary J. Machia of Great Barrington, Mass.; and Charles E. Machia of Irasburg; his brother George C. Machia of Westford; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Raised in South Lunenburg, he was a graduate of Concord High School, Concord, Vt. He had been a longtime resident of Gilman and worked as a master electrician for Gilman Paper for many years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Gilman. Memberships included the Gilman Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus. Family members include two children, Thomas G. Bell, presently stationed with the U.S. Navy in Puerto Rico, and Laurie Leigh Bell Bresnahan of Winooski; two brothers, Bruce J. , 93, a longtime former resident of Fuller Drive in Brattleboro, died after an extended illness, Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. Mrs. Dowdell had resided at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville for the past year. Mrs. Dowdell was born in Danville, July 30, 1908, the daughter of Lillian Winn Badger and Charles H. Badger. She attended Danville Elementary School and graduated from Danville High School. Mrs. Dowdell received a licensed practical nursing degree and worked as a nurse from 1944 to 1952 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, from 1952 to 1973 at the Holstein-Friesian Association of America in Brattleboro, from 1975 to 1979 as a private-duty nurse, and from 1979 to 1989 as a health assistant at the Woodcock Clinic in Guilford. She retired from the health-care profession at the age of 82. In 1925, she married Clarence H. Daniell, Sr. and had four children. In 1939, she married Arthur Dowdell, who predeceased her in 1975. Mrs. Dowdell was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star-Bingham Chapter 30 of Brattleboro and a parishioner of the First United Methodist Church of Brattleboro. She was an avid Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox fan and watched Red Sox games until her death. She is survived by her four children, Marvourine Filgate of Brattleboro, Clarence "Dan" H. Daniell Jr. of Brattleboro, Bettyjane Barnes and husband Marshall of South Orleans, Mass., and Beverly McCann and husband Arthur of Lyndonville; two brothers, Fred and wife Ellie Badger of Danville, and Levi and wife Clara Badger of Danville; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and friends at the Pines Rehab Center. 84, passed away at her residence in Sugar Hill, N.H., early Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2001, following a long and courageous battle with the effects of polio. She was born and raised in Wellesley, Mass., the daughter of John C. and Susan (Shaw) Lee. She graduated from Bennington College in Vermont, where she majored in the arts. She married Selden J. Hannah in 1938 and moved to Franconia/Sugar Hill, where they owned and operated the Ski Hearth Farm, which was an operating farm and ski lodge. Here she developed her desire for ski racing and won the first Eastern Giant Slalom Championship. In 1949, Pauline was stricken with polio and subsequently confined to a wheelchair as nearly a total quadriplegic. As such she became manager of the farm operation. She was also an avid member of the Franconia Ski Club and her fondness, desire and determination for ski racing was subsequently passed on to many area children through the ski club. Her four children were ardent competitors, and her eldest daughter was a member of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. She was predeceased by her daughter Lucy in 1973 and her husband in 1991. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Hannah of Sugar Hill; two sons, Frank Hannah of Andover, Mass., and Selden Hannah of Rochester, N.H.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She lived in Wells River for many years, where prior to retirement she had worked at the Happy Hour Restaurant in Wells River, the Coach & Paddock Restaurant and the former Golden Dream Restaurant in Woodsville. She had also been employed at Channel Mills in Bradford, and she was an independent Amway distributor. Mrs. Rollins was predeceased by her husband Robert Rollins, Aug. 9, 1983; a grandson, Jeremy "JJ" Tuttle, Sept. 2, 1987; two sisters, Rose Marie and Treasa; and two brothers, George and Freeland Burgess. Survivors include one daughter, Diana Tuttle of Newbury, Vt.; two sons, Warren Rollins of Canterbury, N.H., and Robert Rollins of West Stewartstown, N.H.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gretta Cassidy of Florida, and Agnes Holland of Newbury, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews. A calling hour will be held Monday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m., in the funeral home with the Rev. , 87, of North Haverhill, N.H., died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville. She was born in Pike, N.H., March 14, 1914, the daughter of Edward Adam and Nettie L. (Pike) Wright. She graduated from the McIntosh Business School in Lawrence, Mass. Eliza was a secretary and bookkeeper for Moosilauke Lumber and Bobbin Company in Pike, N.H., and the Home for the Elderly in Glencliff, N.H. She was also the bookkeeper and treasurer for the Haverhill School District, served on the town of Haverhill budget committee for several years, and was the clerk for the Bethany Congregational Church in Pike, where she also taught Sunday school. Eliza was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 5245, United Methodist Women's Group, North Haverhill, a member of the Bethany Congregational Church since 1928, and the National AARP. She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Thompson, Feb. 27, 1997, and a sister, Lillian K. Wright, July 31, 1998. Survivors include a sister, Marion LaDuke of Whitefield. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 8 at 1:30 p.m. in the Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville. The Rev. Elizabeth Davis, pastor of the North Haverhill United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ladd Street Cemetery, Haverhill. Following the committal service there will be a period of fellowship at the North Haverhill United Methodist Church. , 91, of West Burke, died at his residence Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001. He was born in St. Eugene, Canada, April 14, 1910, the son of the late Odilon and Evelyn (Sicard) Laramee. He attended school in North Troy. On June 20, 1944, he married Emelia Labbay of North Troy. Before retiring he worked as a farmer and logger. He was a sugar maker for approximately 42 years and retired from sugar making at the age of 80. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville. He is survived by his wife, Emelia Laramee of West Burke; three sons, Roland Laramee and his companion Lydia Corrow of West Burke, Roger Laramee and his wife Brenda of West Burke, and Richard Laramee and his wife Rae Marie of Glendora, Calif.; two daughters, Jeannette Villeneuve and her husband John of West Burke, and Rachel Wagner of West Burke; grandchildren David, William and Brian Laramee, Thomas and Margaret Villeneuve, Timothy Villeneuve, George Jr. and Tammy Wagner, Susan Wagner, Michael Laramee and Marci Laramee; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Laramee and Hannah Wagner; a sister, Isabell Forand of Maynard, Mass.; a son-in-law, George Wagner Sr. of West Burke; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and five sisters. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville, Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Stephen Nichols officiating. , 79, of 52 Farr Hill Road, Littleton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, at her residence Wednesday evening, Oct. 3, 2001, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Whitefield, the daughter of Moise and Mary (Fontaine) Paquette, and had been a resident of Littleton for over 70 years. She was a homemaker and dedicated her life to her family. She was a former member of the Littleton Eagles Club Auxiliary. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda, in 1967, and by her husband Edward, who was the fire chief in Littleton, in 1978. She is survived by two sons, Edward Boynton and Kenneth Boynton, both of Littleton; seven daughters, Lisa Boynton-Smith of Bethlehem, Sheila Keach of Littleton, Cathy Fitzgerald of Longwood, Fla., Cynthia Applegate of Upton, Mass., Carolyn Dickinson of Littleton, Bette Reynolds of Franklin, N.H., and Sandra Webber of Dewey, Ariz.; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Wilkins of Lake Clarmarant, Miss. 80, of 7 Eames St., Groveton, died Oct. 3, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, Vt., following a long illness. He was born April 1, 1921, the son of George and Mildred Edith (Bowen) Lang in Worcester, Mass. He had resided in Groveton since his youth. He was of the Protestant faith, a member of the American Legion Post 17 of Groveton, and the VFW of Lancaster. He served in World War II from 1942-45 and was listed as Missing in Action from 1944-45, but turned out to be a POW during this time. He received the Purple Heart during his time in Germany , and the Battalion Crest, Bronze Star, two Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, his rifle, machine gun, and pistol Marksman Medals and POW Medal. From 1947 to 1949, he served as second lieutenant for the Civil Air Patrol. He was called back to serve during the Korean Conflict from October 1950 to November 1951, at which time he was awarded three Battle Stars. He retired from Groveton Paper, Diamond International, James River, after 43 years of employment. Mr. Lang enjoyed working with leather, painting and gardening. In 1998 he took his arts to the Lancaster Fair and brought home nine blue ribbons. He took 12 blue ribbons and two red ribbons at the fair this year. He also enjoyed taking his artwork to the fiddlers contest and to the Blessing of the Bikes at Our Lady of Grace, as his health allowed. Mr. Lang is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years (Dec. 13), Patricia (Marshall) Lang of Groveton; one son, David of Colebrook, N.H.; two daughters, Peggy Renaud of San Jose, Calif., and Nancy Wilson of Allenstown, N.H.; one brother, Arthur Ainsworth of Westmoreland, N.H.; two sisters, Emma Ainsworth and Florence Holden, both of Milford, N.H.; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Harry and Sherwood Ainsworth, and one sister, Dorothy Foster. At Mr. Lang's request there will be no calling hours. , of St. Johnsbury, died peacefully Saturday evening, Oct. 6, 2001, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She recently observed her 90th birthday. Born in St. Johnsbury, Sept. 10, 1911, she was the oldest of 13 children born to Isaac and Adeline (Garent) Duperron. Her husband Ernest predeceased her Dec. 27, 1986. A longtime resident at 651 Railroad St., Mrs. Racine devoted her life to the care of her daughter Shirley. With the aid of Home Health, Mrs. Racine continued to care for Shirley at home up until a week ago. She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Ann Racine, now residing at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center; her son, Ernest Racine and his wife Kay of Windsor Locks, Conn.; five grandchildren, Jon, Eric and Michael Racine, and Jeff and Kim Pulver; one brother, Lawrence Duperron of Florida; four sisters, Doris Winchester and husband Donald of St. Johnsbury, Lorraine Charron and husband Richard of Lyndonville, Rita Blankenhorn and Dot Grady of Florida; a sister-in-law, Doris McLennan of Braintree, Mass.; and nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 95, of 1496 Simpson Brook Road in Waterford (05819), died at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, Saturday evening, Oct. 6, 2001. Born in Germany, Mrs. Farquhar was a former resident of Armonk, N.Y., and had resided in Waterford since 1973. Her husband, Stephen A. Farquhar, died Nov. 6, 1978, She resided at the Pines for the past month and at the Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury for the past year. She is survived by her daughter, A. "Molly" Thomas and husband Dr. Alfred Thomas of Waterford; four grandchildren, Amalia Davis and husband Michael of Westport, Mass., Stephen Thomas and wife Christine of Waterford, Dr. Karl Thomas and wife Dr. Alexandra Thomas of Coralville, Iowa, Alison Rogers and husband Scott of Wiesbaden, Germany; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cresentia Gayer of Germany. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury, with burial following at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. , 71, of Lyndon, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 at his home on Pudding Hill. He was born in Franklin, Vt., Dec. 31, 1929, the son of Raymond and Josephine (Erno) Austin. He was a graduate of Lyndon Institute and the University of Connecticut. After high school Jim served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He worked at the Pentagon, serving directly under Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and also served in Germany. Jim owned and operated Austin's Pharmacy in Ashland, N.H., for 16 years. Upon his return to Lyndonville he worked as a pharmacist at several area pharmacies for many years. He enjoyed farming, gardening and maple sugaring, and was an avid reader. Spending time with family and friends was most important to Jim. Survivors include four sons, Danny Austin of Lyndonville, Ricky Austin and his wife Chelle of Topsham, Maine, Sam Austin and his wife Wendy of Lyndonville, and Neal Austin and his wife Shari of Lyndonville; four step-children, Todd Keyworth and his wife Lisa of Colchester, Vt., Jeffrey Keyworth and his wife Lisa of Lyndonville, Leslie Hills and her husband David of Middlebury, Vt., and Lisa Courcy of South Burlington, Vt.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Pete Austin and his wife Molly of Georgia; a sister, Darlene Fuster and her husband John of Connecticut; his companion, Janet Grant of Lyndonville; and a close friend and neighbor, Cola Hudson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Greenwood) in 1982; and by his second wife, Betty (Corey) in 2000. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
