BERLIN – Kenneth Allan Adams
....show , 82, of Upper Hill Street Ext., passed away surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barre. He battled numerous health conditions over the past several years, including 4 years of dialysis. His sister Sandra Clark also remained close by his side as did his daughter and granddaughters of Florida.
Kenneth was born on July 23, 1934 in Montpelier, he was the son of Kenneth G. and Evelyn (Stewart) Adams. Kenneth attended East Montpelier Graded School and attended Montpelier High School as part of the class of 1953. After graduating high school, he entered the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 12 ½ years in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
On August 21, 1970, Kenneth married the love of his life, Jacqueline Bissonnette in Berlin.
He was employed at Hutch Concrete for several years. While on the job, he was injured and lost four of his fingers. Kenneth held other jobs throughout his life which included 16 years of employment at the U. S. Post Offices in Barre and Montpelier. He was also employed as a local school bus driver. Kenneth became a member of the Catholic Church in 2010. His memberships included the Canadian Club, the VFW Post 792, and the American Legion Post #3, both of Montpelier.
In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, farming, bird watching, hunting, gardening, motorcycling, back road rides, talking on the phone and most importantly, spending time with his family. He was a jokester and lover of life bringing laughter and smiles to those around him. His most famous joke being “Don’t squeeze my fingers”. Kenneth was a hardworking, honest, reliable and sincere man who will be missed by many.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Adams, of Berlin; his daughters, Maureen Adams and her partner, Ron Lackey, of Stowe, Tammy Cookson of Cabot, and Jody Fewer and her husband, Jaime, of Barre Town; and his son Andrew Adams and his wife, Karen, of Cabot; his six grandchildren, Brock Cookson of Cabot, Spencer, Camryn, Julia and Seth Fewer of Barre Town, and Emma Adams of Cabot, also great-grandson ,Carter Morse, of Williamstown; as well as his daughter Nancy McLanely of Florida and her daughters, Karissa Wright and her children Kaden and Channer, and Lindsay Ermy and her husband, Danny, of Florida; his sister Sandra Clark of Barre Town; a sister-in-law ,Thanna Adams, of Berlin; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Vaughn Adams, a sister Brenda Bashaw and her husband, Art; his brother-in-law Frank Clark; and a grandson Logan Cookson .
Kenneth’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Monica Catholic Church on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place in the Berlin Corner Cemetery at the convenience of the family in the spring.

EAST BARRE – Alfred Walter “Buddy” Atkins
....show , 80, of Phil Street died Monday, March 27, 2017, at his home with his family at his side.
Born April 23, 1936 in Websterville, he was the son of Elizabeth “Betty” Duncan Blake. He had attended elementary school in East Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre City.
“Buddy” was married to Linda J. Eells in Mendon, VT and all of their married life had been spent in East Barre.From 1955 to 1957 he served in the United States Army and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and was discharged at Fort Dix, NJ.
Following his discharge in 1957, he worked in sales for Hibbert and McGee Wholesale Inc., in East Barre and later became owner and operator of the company.
Hunting, camping, spending time at Pigeon Pond, traveling and the out of doors were things the enjoyed and was a member of the Mutuo, Inc.
Besides his wife Linda, he leaves his daughter Nancy Manning and her husband, Mitchell of Orange and his son James Atkins and his significant other Jill Lyons of East Barre; four granddaughters Mikayla, Shenia and Lexis Manning and Emily Atkins; as well as his sisters Mary Lu Guy and Lois Plante and brother Floyd “Skip” Blake and nieces and nephews.
The service to remember and honor the life of “Buddy” will be celebrated Friday, March 31, 2017 in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre at 1:00 p.m.
Later inurnment will be made in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph Center at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

BARRE CITY – Fred Eugene Austin
....show , 91, a longtime resident of Maple Avenue, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. His loving family had been with him at his bedside.
Born on May 31, 1926 in Northfield, he was the son of Howard and Mary (Adams) Austin. He attended elementary school in Northfield and was a graduate of Northfield High School. Following his schooling he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served with distinction during the Korean Conflict. After twenty years with the Navy he was honorably discharged.
On December 3, 1950, he married the love of his life, Mary Phillips, in Barre City. Together they made their home in Barre and raised five wonderful children. Mary passed away on November 1, 1981.
Besides the Navy, Fred held many occupations throughout his life. He held multiple positions in sales, including selling insurance policies, and worked for the State of Vermont as a probation and parole officer for over twenty years before retiring.
Fred was a dedicated member of the VFW Post #790, the American Legion Post #10 and the Canadian Club. He frequently made donations to these and many other organizations.
Throughout his life he had many hobbies and interests, but the most important of these was gardening, photography, caring for his and other’s animals and most importantly spending time with his loving family and friends.
Fred is survived by his son, Fred Austin Jr. of Barre; three daughters, Victoria Austin, Nancy Austin and Sue Austin all of Barre; nineteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He also leaves his sister, Lodema Utton, of Mobile Alabama as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Howard Austin, his brother, Raymond Austin, a sister, Leona Hemmingway, two granddaughters and a great-grandson.
A service to honor and celebrate Fred’s life will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Barre Town. There are no calling hours.

Laurie Ellen (Coburn) Bailey
....show , 60, of Barre, died on Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at University of Vermont Medical Center.
Laurie was born on July 17, 1957, in Montpelier, Vermont, the daughter of Pauline E. (Greaves) and the late David A. Coburn. Laurie graduated U-32 High School Class of 1977.On June 22, 1996, Laurie married Steven F. Bailey in East Montpelier.
Over the years, Laurie worked as an elder care companion for many area families and local elder care homes, over 12 years at the Berlin Price Chopper, and 10 years delivering The Times Argus with Steve.
Laurie loved animals, coin collecting with Steve, quilting, embroidery, cooking, photography, watching old movies, country music, word puzzles, cribbage and genealogy.
Laurie is survived by her husband; her mother; siblings Wendi, Cheryl, Scott, Brett, Lisa and Mohsen and their families; and endless extended family.

WILLIAMSTOWN – Rebecca Bailey
....show , 78, of Bailey Road passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin with her family at her bedside. Born May 6, 1939 in Plainfield, she was the daughter of John and Frieda (Aiken) Morrison.
Rebecca attended the King Elementary School in Marshfield.
On June 27, 1971 she married David Bailey in Williamstown. Following their marriage they made their home in Williamstown.
Rebecca was a loving wife and caregiver spending her time working on the dairy farm with her husband.
Her special interests were fishing, camping, farming and most of all spending precious time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, David Bailey of Williamstown; her sister Elsie McNally of Williamstown; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also, leaves her brother-in-law Burton Bailey and his wife, Margery; and sisters-in-law Dorothy, Blanche and Edith in addition to many close special friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son Eddie Bailey; her brothers John and Evi Morrison; and her sisters Rachel Trottier and Beatrice Irons.
Her graveside service will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the East Cemetery in Brownington. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

MARSHFIELD - Dwight Baker
....show 74, of English Cemetery Road died on Thursday, October 5, 2017, surrounded by loving family.
Dwight was born March 8, 1943 in North Adams, MA., the son of Warren and Ruth (McKay) Baker of Clarksburg, MA. Dwight graduated from Drury High School in North Adams, MA and attained his B.S. in Civil Engineering and Land Surveying from Worcester Poly Technical Institute.
Dwight was a practicing Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor for 52 years, working for the Vermont State Department of Transportation for several years and then managing a long-time successful Engineering and Land Surveying business.He was a long-time active member of the Vermont State Land Surveyors, the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Dwight was a loving husband, father, brother, generous friend to many and he spent his life in service to others. He was a dedicated volunteer firefighter for 46 years with the Marshfield Volunteer Fire Department. During that time, he served as assistant chief for many years and was Chief of the Department for 7 years. After retiring as Chief, Dwight continued to be an active member of the fire department until his death.Most recently, Dwight supported the Covenant Hills Christian Camp in Cabot, as caretaker and was a friend to the camp for over 30 years beginning with his participation in the original campus development.Dwight was also an avid skier all his life and was part of the Dutch Hill Ski Patrol for many years.
Dwight is survived by his daughters Jill Baker, Kara Baker-Holroyd, and sister Brenda Gabel, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Baker, whom he married on June 23, 1968.
A remembrance and reception will be held at the Christ Covenant Ministries Church, 83 Creamery Road, Marshfield on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 3:00 pm. There are no calling hours.
The family thanks the many friends who shared Dwight and Marys’ life over the years and is especially grateful for the outpouring of love and support during the last few months of Dwight’s life.

BARRE TOWN - Ernest H. “Ernie” Bancroft, Jr.
....show , of Smith Farm Road, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Central Vermont Medical Center. His family was at his bedside.
Ernie was born on December 24, 1928 in South Barre to Ernest H. Bancroft and Ida Mae Gordon. He was the sixth of seven children.
He attended South Barre School, graduated from Spaulding High School, Class of 1947, graduated from Vermont Junior College in 1949 and attended the University of Vermont.
Ernie joined the Army, and after basic training he was selected for officer candidate school where he graduated as a First Lieutenant. He served in the military for twelve years, including three years during the Korean War. He later became Company Commander in the Reserves and retired as Captain.
On July 10, 1954 he married Theresa Marie Keefe at St. Monica Church in Barre. They resided at the Bancroft family home in South Barre for 34 years, then moved to Windywood Road in Barre Town in 1988.
As a young man, Ernie drove a milk truck for Granite City Creamery. After serving his country, he worked as a car salesman at Walker Motors.He then became an insurance agent at Paige and Campbell, where he worked from 1954 until his retirement in 1996.
Ernie was a member of St. Monica Parish where he served on the finance committee. He was a Barre Town selectman and a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, serving as King Lion from 1970-1971. Additionally, he became a member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Mutuo, and was a charter member of the Sno-Bees. He was a trustee at the Central Vermont Hospital for over 20 years and served as Chairman of the Board from 1989-1993. He was also a trustee of the Vermont Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Northfield Savings Bank. Ernie was the first president of the Barre Area Development Corporation, serving that organization for 20 years. He was active in the Barre Chamber of Commerce for many years as well, where he served as president and spearheaded a fight in the 1960’s to have the interstate highway located closer to Barre.Ernie also served on the Fundraising Committee to reopen the Barre Opera House.
Ernie enjoyed staying active and cherished the outdoors. He was a founding member of Checkpoint Hunting Club where he spent time with lifelong friends and family members, including his son and grandsons. He was also a member of the Maidstone hunting camp. He went on memorable snowmobile trips with friends, including one from Barre to Quebec City and back in 4 days (a distance of 780 miles) and another to Yellowstone National Park. He enjoyed hiking and climbed Camel’s Hump solo at age 80 and climbed the Worcester Range with a friend at 82. He fished most Saturday mornings at Lake Caspian and took fishing trips to Lake Ontario, Alaska, and a fly-in fishing trip to Canada. Until the age of 82, he played tennis twice a week.
His grandchildren were always surprised that Ernie knew people all over the state. He developed many close friends over the years. Every day at 7 AM sharp, Ernie joined his “breakfast crew” at Soup ‘N Greens. He then met up with a group of friends for coffee at McDonald’s later in the morning.
While Ernie’s list of accomplishments is long, and his service to the community is impressive, he will be remembered most for his devotion to his family. His father died when Ernie was in his teens, and he quickly became the “go-to guy” for his mother and siblings. His special combination of attributes—his strength, intelligence, and calm nature—allowed others to trust Ernie and rely on him for help of any kind. Any major decision, every crisis, resulted in the familiar “Call Ernie”.
Theresa, his beloved wife, was the love of Ernie’s life. Together they raised three children, and Ernie found immense joy in providing for his kids and watching them grow up. When they were young, he built them a small pool in the backyard of their South Barre home. He hung swings from the highest trees, built impressive caves in the snow banks made by the plows, led them on spring trips to historical places, and took them camping every summer at Groton.These traditions continued with his nine grandchildren, whom he patiently taught to shoot guns, spot and track deer, hunt, and fish. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. ‘Sunday dinners’ were an important part of life.
Ernie Bancroft was well-loved by all who knew him, and will be missed by the entire community.
Ernie is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Balserus Johnson and her husband, Tim, of Williston, and Mary Ellen Natusch and her husband, Paul, of Westford, MA. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Kim Balserus Fadden and her husband, Rick; Dan Balserus; Katie Bancroft King and her husband, Kevin; Erin Bancroft Downer and her husband, Dave; Ben Natusch; Ernest H. “Buddy” Bancroft, IV; Jimmie Natusch and his fiancee, Claire Pettit; Michael Bancroft; and Jennifer Natusch.He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Nevaeh, Morgan, Taylor, and Riley Theresa King.
He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, and his son, Ernest H. “Skip” Bancroft, III; his son-in-law, Chuck Balserus; his daughter-in-law, Colleen Bancroft; as well as his parents and siblings.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 2-5 p.m. at Hooker & Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St. in Barre. A mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, April 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Monica Church, 79 Summer St., Barre.

BARRE – Carla Bardelli
....show , 97, a 58-year Barre resident passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017 at The Landing Assisted Living Facility in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Born on July 18, 1920, in Gazzada-Schianno, Italy, she was the daughter of Claudio and Adele (Bossi) Talamona.
On May 5, 1945, she married Angelo Bardelli. They first made their home in Italy, before moving to Barre in 1953. Angelo died on September 19, 2010. A year after Angelo’s death, Carla moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine to be closer to her daughter.
Carla was a loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, walking, cooking and taking care of her family.
Survivors include her daughter Anna McNally and her husband, Joe of Cape Elizabeth, ME; her son Geno and his wife, Peggy Bardelli of Decatur, IL; and her five grandchildren Marisa of Maine; Jonathan of New York City, Emilie of Virginia; Matthew of Georgia; and Anna of North Carolina; as well as six great-grandchildren Penny, Tully and Franny all of Maine; and Luca, Erik and Lia all of Georgia, who knew her as “Big Nonni”.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Angelo, she was predeceased by her brother Ido Talamona. Carla will be deeply missed by family and friends.
A private graveside service was held at the convenience of her family where she was interred next to her beloved husband, Angelo in the Hope Cemetery in Barre.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life will be held later.
EAST BARRE – Maurice D. Barile
....show , 79, of Washington Road, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017, at his home.
Born on September 21, 1937 in Barre, he was the son of Emil and Marie (Goulet) Baril. He attended St. Monica Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1957. After graduation, Mo served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a SGT.
On June 17, 1067, Maurice married Judith L. Lafreniere in Mother Cabrini Catholic Church in East Barre. Following their marriage, they made their home in Montpelier before moving to their present home in East Barre in 1971.
Mo worked as a sandblaster at the Rock of Ages manufacturing plant in Graniteville for forty years until his retirement.
His interests were gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Baril of East Barre; his son, James A. Baril and his wife, Heather of Barre; his daughters, Jodi Demell and her husband, Bill and Jennifer Baril, all of East Barre; and his grandchildren, Christina Baril, Danial Baril, Mason Demell and Sophia Demell.
Mo was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Raymond, Norman, Paul, Andy, Roger, and Charlie Baril.
His services will be at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours.
SOUTH BARRE – Betty E. Barnett
....show , 85, of Snowbridge Road passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin with her loving family at her bedside.
Born on March 14, 1932 in Huntington, she was the daughter of Melvin O. and Ruth L. (Garvey) Emmons.Betty attended Hinesburg Elementary and High School.
Betty married Bernard U. Barnett in Woodbury. Following their marriage they made their home in Barre.
She was employed as a laundry attendant by Barre Steam and Laundry and Bashara’s Laundry mats and as a Store Clerk for Owen’s Market as well as a nanny for the Poirier family.
Betty was a member of the Hinesburg Congregational Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to country and western music, dancing, birds, flowers, and loved spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her children Bernard, Brian, Ronnie, Gary, Mary, Joyce and Sandie; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; her brothers Wayne Emmons, Wesley Emmons, Ricky Emmons, and Wendell Emmons; her sisters Barbara Crawford, Brenda Sherman, and Sharon Edson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Predeceased by her parents, her husband Bernard Barnett, her daughter Judy, her son Donald, grandson Lucas, and her sisters Cheryl Emmons and Beverly Emmons.

BARRE CITY – Michael J. Barton
....show , 67, a long-time resident of Park Street, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at his home.
Born on March 13, 1950, in Barre City, he was the son of Earl and Gladys (Molander) Barton. Michael attended Elementary School in Barre City and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1968.
Michael was first employed by WSKI radio as a morning disc jockey hosting the Mike Barton Show. He was later self-employed as a computer consultant for many years. He finished his career working in the IT Division of the Vermont Department of Education. For many years he was a volunteer at the Aldrich Public Library and the Barre Police Department, providing support services for their technology. He also volunteered to program voting machines for local elections.
In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering on electronics and studying physics, although most of all he loved talking with family and friends.
Survivors include his son Patrick Barton and his wife, Rachel Delanoix of Houston, TX; his daughter Jennifer Gilman and her husband, Casey of North Carolina; two granddaughters Celeste and Dalilah; his sister Vivian Lawrence and her husband, John and his brother Steven Barton, all of Barre; as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents.

ORANGE – Nancy H. Beard
....show , 86, of Beard Road passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Born September 18, 1930 in Iowa City, IA, she was the daughter of Andrew and Ruth E. (Brownson) Holt.
Nancy attended elementary school in Iowa City, before her family moved to Massachusetts where she graduated from Worcester High School. After graduation she enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1952.
While serving in the Army, she married Arthur C. Wolford. They had one son, Robert L. Wolford. They later divorced. She lived in California before moving to Vermont. In the mid 1960’s, she met Carroll Beard and they were married June 22, 1968. In 1970, they adopted a newborn daughter, Julie. They first made their home in Proctor before moving to Rutland. After they retired, they moved to their current residence in Orange.
Nancy was employed by the Burlington Police Department as a meter maid for a few years before becoming a full-time homemaker.
She was a member of the Grace Congregational Church in Rutland.
Nancy was fascinated by antiques and other collectibles, especially dolls and Hummel figurines. She was an excellent housekeeper and had a knack for displaying her collectibles.
Survivors include her husband Carroll Beard of Orange; her son Robert L. Wolford of Royalton; her daughter Julie Reynolds and her husband, Jeffrey of Knoxville, TN; her grandson Adam Wolford and his sons Cooper, Silas and Dexter; grandchildren Nicholas, Olivia, Elizabeth and Lauren Reynolds; her sister Barbara Greene of Lafayette, IN; her sister-in-law Elsie Beard of Orange; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Winfield Holt, and her sister Betty Browning.
The service to honor and celebrate Nancy’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Christ Community Alliance Church in Orange. Inurnment will be in the Orange Center Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

DUXBURY – Gloria Lois Bedell
....show , 77, of Main Street passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017, at her home with her loving family at her bedside.
Born March 2, 1939, Gloria was the daughter of Raymond and Marion (Flint) LaCoursere. Gloria attended elementary schools in Randolph and Chester and graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1957.
Gloria married Clinton Rodric Bedell on September 20, 1958, in Chester, VT. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington, DC Temple in November 1988. Following their marriage, they lived in Montpelier, Riverton, Braintree, Roxbury, Northfield, and Williamstown, finally settling in Duxbury.
Gloria was employed as a Stenographer for the State of Vermont, working in the Highway Department, Right-of-Way Division Federal Eisenhower Highway, and the Criminal Division for the Commissioner of Public Safety, the Commissioner of Aeronautics, and the Agency of Human Services and as a member of the Legislative Council services for the Legislature. She was also the owner and operator of Bedell’s Yankee Burger.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a primary teacher, and young women’s leader, as well as spending 2 years as a service missionary in family history and 2 years each on temple missions in Toronto and Montreal Canada.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton Bedell, Sr.; her children Clinton Bedell, Jr., of Michigan; Douglas Bedell of Williamstown; William Bedell of West Topsham; Cheryl Atherton and her husband, Chris of Bluff Dale, UT; and Timothy Bedell and his wife, Diana of Layton, UT; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, her son Raymond Bedell, her great-grandson Logan Bedell and her sister Pearl Spafford.
A service to honor and celebrate Gloria’s life will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 244 Hersey Road, Berlin.Family and friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

BARRE - Mary Lesley Bell
....show , a longtime resident of Abbott Avenue, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Mayo Health Care in Northfield where she has resided since 2008.
Lesley, as she was known, was born in Barre on February 5, 1924, the daughter of Athol R. and Jennie (Ewen) Bell. She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1942 and from the University of Vermont in 1946.
She began her career working for the State of Vermont Department of Personnel, advancing to the position of Director in the mid 1960s. Desiring a change in career, she returned to UVM and earned her Master’s Degree in Education and Counseling and subsequently was a guidance counselor, first at the Barre Middle School and later at Spaulding High School, retiring in 1984.
Throughout her life, Lesley was active in many organizations and traveled widely. She was an avid golfer and one of the first female members of the Barre Country Club. Her passion also was painting and she was a founding member of the Barre Paleteers. She was a longtime member of Barre’s Tourist and Philomathian Clubs. She served on the boards of the Aldrich Public Library and Washington County Mental Health. She was a lifelong communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, serving for many years on the altar guild.
She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Bell Ralph, her brother-in-law, Frederick Ralph and her niece, Lesley Ralph Wetherbee. She is survived by her two nephews, Stephen and Duncan Ralph.
Her family wishes to convey to the staff at the Mayo Health Center their appreciation for the extraordinary care Lesley received from them throughout her stay.
A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at the convenience of the family in the Elmwood Cemetery in Barre. There are no calling hours.

BARRE – Esther Linea Ohlin Bettis

Born July 1, 1919 in Barre, she was the daughter of Hjalmar and Agnes (Erickson) Ohlin. Esther attended elementary school in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1937.After high school, she graduated from the Burlington Business School.
Esther worked as a secretary for the telephone company for many years.
On July 3, 1948, she married Roger F. Bettis of Montpelier. He passed away on December 20, 1983, in Englewood, FL.
She was a member of the Montpelier Emerald Club.

MARSHFIELD – Jane W. Bickford
....show , 83, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the home of Timothy and Raylene Codling in Berlin where she had been lovingly taken care of the last years of her life.
Jane was born on May 12, 1933 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of John D. and Neva (Amidon) Welch. She made her home in Worcester with her younger sister, Ellen, until the family moved to Indiana and later Maryland, her father managing farms in those two states.
After her mother died, the family returned to Vermont and Jane attended school in Northfield, while living with her grandparents and graduated from Northfield High School. She then attended the University of Vermont for further schooling where she met Harry Bickford, they were later married in Burlington. After their marriage they moved to Orange, CT where she ultimately took a job with Enthone and was with the company for over 25 years. Jane and her husband took great enjoyment in camping and spent the occasional weekend or week traveling to various campgrounds in and around Connecticut. Jane continued camping after the death of her husband in 1982.
Jane is survived by her sisters, Ellen Codling of Marshfield, Hilda Blackburn of North Carolina, and Carole Moritz of Colorado; her brother Bryce Lyndes of Arizona and their families; as well as her sister Ellen’s children, Cresswell, Timothy, Sarah and their families.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the convenience of the family.

BARRE TOWN – Collin Joseph Bigras
....show , 25, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at his home.
Collin was born on November 22, 1991 at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin, the son of Steven and Christina (Metakos) Bigras. He grew up in East Montpelier and attended East Montpelier Elementary School and graduated from U-32 High School in 2010.
Collin was vice president of B&B Monumental Engravers the family business in Barre. He also was an experienced carpenter and heavy equipment operator working on many projects with his father and brothers.
Collin competed in trap shooting all over the United States. He was mentored by a long time family friend Mike Blaisdell who taught him how to shoot. Collin won multiple trophies at the many places he and his family shot. While shooting at the World Championships at age 15 he won the Champion of Champions event as a Sub Junior competing against the other State Sub Junior Champions. Two years later he won the Junior Clay Target Championship hitting his first 200 straight and then another 187 straight in the shoot off to win. He was the first shooter to ever run 200 straight at the Vermont State Shoot singles championship and win the singles title since record keeping started 104 years prior.
Collin was a life member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association, the Barre Lodge of Elks #1535, the Barre Country Club and the Montpelier Gun Club.
In his spare time, he loved trapshooting, golfing, hunting, and fishing and would always help anyone who needed help.
Collin loved coming to work. Everyone at his work was like family to him. He always had a smile on his face and was happy saying “good morning boys” everyday.
Collin also helped his brother, Tylor, donating his time for the Tires for Troops program which helps veterans in need.
Survivors include his mother Christina Metakos-Bigras; his father Steven and his wife, Chantal Bigras; his brothers Trevor and Tylor Bigras; his sister Jessica Driscoll; aunts Cindy Bigras, Lori Bigras and Diane Morrison; his maternal grandmother Mary Metakos; and his paternal grandfather Maurice Bigras, as well as many cousins.
A graveside service to honor Collin will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. at Hope Cemetery in Barre and a celebration of Collin’s life will follow at the Barre Lodge of Elks at 1:00 p.m.

BARRE TOWN – Maurice “Moe” Bigras
....show passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 30th at his home on Richardson Road in Barre with family by his side.
Born in Newport, Vermont on November 14, 1931 to Camille J. Bigras and Isabelle B. (Nadeau) Bigras, Moe spent his early years in New Hampshire, moving to Vermont with his family at the age of nine. Attending Barre City schools, Moe later joined the Air Force where he served in the Philippines during the Korean conflict. Upon leaving the military, Moe returned to his beloved Vermont where he would meet his future wife Kathleen “Kitty” Murray of Montpelier, Vermont. Married on April 28, 1956, Moe and Kitty were married for 58 years until her death in 2014.
Moe is survived by his four children, Cindy Bigras of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Steven and wife, Chantal (affectionately referred to as “Giselle”) Bigras, of East Montpelier, Vermont, Lori Bigras of Santa Cruz, California , Diane and Larry Morrison of Pensacola, Florida and sister Lucille “Bunny” Beard of Burlington, Vermont. He was predeceased by his sister Annette Parle. Beloved grandchildren include Jessica, Trevor, Tylor, Jalyn, Wyatt and Kobe—and grandson Collin who passed away earlier this year—and great grandson Noah, as well as nieces and nephews.
A hard worker his entire life, Moe’s career began as a stonecutter, soon starting his own successful sandblast business which he would go on to operate with son Steve until his retirement in 1993. Moe loved the woods and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman with trapshooting being a special passion. He developed many lifelong friendships as an active member of the Montpelier Gun Club, where he passed along his love of trapshooting to his son and grandsons.
In his spare time between tinkering in his workshop on countless projects, Moe was known to never say no to someone in need, readily lending a helping hand to a friend or family member. An enthusiastic gardener, Moe’s plentiful harvests fed many neighbors in addition to his own family.
Moe was always up for a competitive game of cards, whether at home or hunting camp. A loyal fan, Moe never missed a Red Sox game and opportunity to cheer on ‘his boys.”
Moe will be remembered by friends and loved one as, among other things, a humble gentle soul with a kind and warm heart. His patience, compassion and eternal optimism were trademarks the likes of which are rare in the best of men. His commitment to, and love of, his family leave a void that will be deeply felt forever.
A graveside ceremony to honor Moe’s life will be at Hope Cemetery in Barre on Saturday, September 9th at 1:00 PM. There are no calling hours.

BARRE – John “Big John” Blake
....show , 73, of Summer Street, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 26, 1943 in Barre, he was the son of Arthur and Noella (Tremblay) Blake. John attended Wells River Elementary School and graduated from Wells River High School in the Class of 1961. After high school, he joined the National Guard and served from 1961 to 1967.
On July 3, 1971, John married Jacquelynn Diana Hobbs in Bradford. Following their marriage, they made their home in Barre.
John was first employed as a lineman for Western Union. Later, he was a driver for Powers Rubbish Company for many years and until retirement worked part-time delivering parts for Bond Auto.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 20 of Woodsville, NH. In his spare time, John enjoyed camping, ice fishing, playing horseshoes, going to deer camp and hunting, and watching NASCAR.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie of 45 years; his daughters, Shelley Reed and Nikki Ariste; his stepdaughter Stormy Williams, all of Barre; and his grandchildren, Olivia, Zackary, and Evan. He was predeceased by his parents.

MARSHFIELD - Barbara Elaine (Medved) Bohn
....show , age 79 of Hollister Hill Road passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 26, 2017, at home with her husband of 54 years.
Born in Gary, Indiana on October 11, 1937, she was the daughter of Paul and Katherine Medved. Barbara attended Horace Mann High School; Ball State University, and Indiana University; and taught at Wirt High School in Gary before moving to Marshfield.
There she raised three children: gardening, canning, freezing, bagging lunches, shopping for back-to-school clothes in the Sears catalogue, and acting as an emotional and educational guide.
Barbara served as both a para-educator and a secretary at Twinfield Elementary, and leaves behind many friends. She was a Justice of the Peace and a polling volunteer. An amateur botanist, she collected myriad grasses, sedges, and ferns; attended Eagle Hill Institute with her botany buddies; identified rare species; and once assisted a researcher interested in her findings.
She read Dickens and Austen and pulled the poems of Robert Frost from the air. She loved travelling to Ireland with Chuck and their friends. She was her husband’s muse and model, gazing into the distance from the center of many a painting. Voted second funniest in her class, Barb was hilarious, and her family thinks that the title should be contested. And she was a walker. Every day, regardless of weather, she took to the woods in pursuit of her hobby, in pursuit of solitude, roaming through the undergrowth or feet of snow. This is how she will be remembered.
Survivors include her husband Charles, their three children and spouses, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her sister Joan, of Staten Island, and Henry.
She was predeceased unexpectedly by her beloved dog Norman, the morning before her passing. He was there to greet her for another walk.
A Mass in celebration of Barbara’s life will be at North American Martyrs Catholic Church, Route 2, Marshfield on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.

BARRE - Christopher Thomas Booth
....show , formerly of Barre, passed away Thursday October 5, 2017, at his home in Plattsburgh, New York at the age of 39.
Chris was born on September 21, 1978 in Berlin, VT, the son of Thomas and Cheryl (Lafreniere) Booth of Fort Myers, FL. He attended Barre Town Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School class of 1997. He also attended Endicott College in Beverly, MA.
Chris was a very special son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend and was loved by all who knew him. He was the type of guy you just couldn't get mad at, Chris could sweet talk his way out of just about anything...which he needed to do plenty of times as the Class Clown in school growing up. His smile was contagious and he always wanted to make everyone around him happy. Those of us that were close to Chris knew that he was struggling at times, but he would never let you know it...he always had that big smile and something positive to say. Growing up, Chris loved sports, he played soccer and lacrosse for Spaulding and he also enjoyed playing basketball with his brother and friends. He was also an excellent skier and loved being outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.
Chris was survived by his father, Thomas Booth, his mother Cheryl (Lafreniere) Booth, his brother, Scott Booth, and his dog Sonny as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Chris will be missed so much by all who were lucky enough to be a part of his life.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017, at 11:00am at Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. A celebration of Chris' life will follow at Millstone Hill Barn & Lodge, 59 Little John Road, Websterville.

BARRE - Dawn Crystal Borne
....show , 52, passed away peacefully at home on July 4, 2017.She was surrounded by family and friends, including her beloved dog Gracie.Dawn took everyone's love with her, and is now fishing with Grandpa Gus and Grandma Bert.After this she will be heading over to Grandpa Roger and Grandma Gladys farm to hay and help milk the cows.
Her strong faith in God, and the love of her family and friends, made passing from this world to the next, as easy as it can be.
Dawn was born May 12, 1965, at the Barre City Hospital to James and Fay (Thomas) Borne.
At the early age of four, she and her family moved to Burlington, NC. Dawn attended Western High School in North Carolina and went on to Nursing School at ACC Community College in Graham, NC, receiving her LPN License.
Dawn lived life to its fullest, enjoying the outdoors, family, and friends. She loved birds as much as flowers, and studied every book available to become an expert on all the species living in the area.One of her great joys was to take her two dogs at the time (Jackson and Dottie) to Berlin Pond and see how many birds she could identify.
And of course, the true love of her life was her niece, Ivey, whom she welcomed into her home and raised as her own child, an act of love that spoke louder than words.
When Dawn received unfortunate news of her prognosis on Monday, she took it with grace and presented family and friends with a "bucket list'. This list moved her physician to tears and she gave Dawn heck for ruining her make up.
The list, all of which was completed:(1) I want “Lobstaw” and Champagne, (2) I want to be on my couch with Gracie, again, her beloved dog that she had rescued from a shelter, and lastly (3) I want strawberry cake from Morgan's Tavern.All three of these were done and made her very happy.
There are just too many stories to tell here about Dawn and her very full life, but all should know that she enjoyed each and every friendship, and each and every new experience in life.She wouldn't want you to be sad for her, but rather be happy for all that you gave her in this world.
Dawn is survived by her parents; and her step mom, Victoria Borne; her sister, Kamie Morrison of Essex; and her niece, Ivey Morrison of Barre. Also surviving are her aunt Sherry and her husband, Ron Shadroy, cousins Jean St. Laurent and her husband, Michael; Allan Thomas and his wife, Pat; Felicia Fox and her fiancé, Clay Gates; and Felicia’s father, George Fox.
We would like to thank Central Vermont Medical Center and all the doctors and nurses who gave so much in their care of Dawn.Thanks also to Hospice and the entire staff for walking us through the in home care and needs for her. Special friends JoAnne Savard, Robin Thelonius, Morgan Mattson, Reagan Dickinson, Victoria Borne, Rick Venmar, Reverend David, and Nancy Fowler, along with the entire congregation of the Barre Congregational Church.It is just impossible to list here all of the people who selfishly gave of themselves to Dawn and us through this passing. BARRE – Bernard G. Brassard
....show , 92, a long-time resident of Lincoln House, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Berlin.
Born April 6, 1924 in Brookfield, he was the son of Alfred and Clara (Belanger) Brassard. Bernard attended schools in Northfield and Montpelier. He served proudly in the Marine Corps during World War II in the Asia Pacific Theater.
On May 27, 1950 he married Doris Bolduc at St. Ann’s Church in Hartford, CT.Following their marriage, they lived in several communities in Connecticut before spending most of their married life in Barre. Upon their retirement they made their home in Sebring, FL and spent their summers at their cottage on Peacham Pond. Doris passed away on May 3, 2008.
Bernard was a self-employed general contractor in the central Vermont area. His memberships included the St. Monica Catholic Church and the Canadian Club of Barre where he served as Past President.
Throughout his life he had many hobbies and interests, but those that were most special to him included playing cards, shooting horseshoes, and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his children Paul Brassard and his partner, Penny; Bill Brassard and his wife, Pam; Denise Jacques and her husband, Rocky; Larry Brassard and his wife, Judy, all of Barre; and David Brassard and his wife, Sandy, of Stuart, FL; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his siblings Maurice, Jim, Lucille, Marie and Louise.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Leo and Bob and his sister Genevieve.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. BARRE TOWN – Winston Clive Bresett
....show , 91, of Cardinal Circle, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 22, 2017.
Born on March 10, 1925 one of eight children to Leo and Rose (Lesperance) on 3 Grant Avenue in Barre. Win attended Ward 5 and Spaulding High School until his father was taken ill and he went to work at the family farm.
In 1941, Win met the love of his life, Barbara Pitman, at a big band dance with the Ambassadors, which was run by his future father-in-law. On June 4, 1942, Win and Barbara eloped to St. Paul’s Cathedral in Burlington. They then made their home on Warren Street. Win joined the United States Navy. Following his service, he worked as a polisher at Grearson and Lane for 17 years. Win and Barbara started their family with the arrival of Harold Pitman in 1944, Carol Jane in 1945, and Penny Lee in 1960.
During their early years of marriage, Win would remodel and sell houses to supplement their income. In 1956, Win started Win’s Gulf Station on Washington Street in Barre. Win successfully ran a top notch service station for 24 years. After retiring from Win’s Gulf, Win went to work as a cemetery sexton for the Town of Barre. This job allowed Win and Barbara to winter in their condo in Boynton Beach, FL. At the same time, Win purchased a mini mart in East Barre that later became Roland’s.
In 1987, Win and Barbara along with their daughter Carol purchased Flowers By Emslie of Barre. Win took delight in his floral delivery nicknames of “Go-fer” and “Win with a grin”.
Win and Barbara enjoyed many years of travel, visiting places like England, Hawaii, Bermuda, Bahama’s and Florida. Win’s memberships included the Elks, Canadian Club, and the American Legion. Win enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and going to his camp in East Orange. Win enjoyed music and was a self-taught musician. He played the violin, harmonica, and guitar. Win enjoyed singing to his family.
Win leaves his best friend and beloved wife of nearly 75 years, Barbara, his children Harold (Pamela), Carol (William) Chase, and Penny (James) Barrows. His grandchildren: Craig (Kristine) Chase, Sean (Abbey) Bresett, Michael (Wendy) Bresett, Cara (Robert) Brown, Heather Bresett, Nicole DuPont and James Winston (Deanna) Barrows. Win’s great-grandchildren: Hunter and Grady Chase, Elizabeth and Matthew Winston Bresett, Collin and Sarah Bresett, Anderson and Riley Brown, and Madelynn and Julianna DuPont.
He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Oreetha, Althea, Leah, Beatrice, Leonel, Willda, and Lester.

BARRE - James Angelo Broggini
....show of Barre passed away at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph on Friday, August 11, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. James (Jim) the son of Margherita (Moretti) and Cirillo Broggini was born on February 8, 1929 in the Barre City Hospital.
An original “North Ender” he attended school at Ward Five and North Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in the class of 1947 where he attended drafting classes. In 1952, Jim enlisted and served in the U.S. Army traveling to Germany, France and Italy. Following service to his country, he came home to Barre and operated a drafting service with his childhood friend, Charles Gianonni.
On September 10, 1955, Jim married Maria Carcoba at St Monica’s Church and raised four children, Maria Broggini Beede, Martin (“Tino”) James Broggini, Juanita Broggini Plante, all of Barre, and Margarita Broggini Carroll of Andover, Massachusetts. Following their marriage, Jim became a draftsman for Rock of Ages Corporation and for North Barre Granite Company until his retirement.
Jim and Maria loved to travel - Spain, Italy, Hawaii, and Florida became favorites, along with trips to Maine. There were yearly trips to Montreal, Canada to pick up the special grapes he needed to make wine in his father’s wine-making equipment. This was a great joy to him. With family being of utmost importance in his life, he spent many hours attending events and celebrations for his children and grandchildren.He loved playing cribbage, pitch, golf, bowling, and horse-shoes over the years. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his son, “Tino”, selling cotton candy at the Annual Mountain State Fair in Ashville, NC each fall. Poker nights with home-made pizza and hot fudge sundaes served by Maria were favorites of Jim’s; and, later in life, Friday morning doughnuts and coffee with his Mutuo buddies, a quick game or two of billiards followed by lunch became a weekly staple. Over the years, Jim enjoyed Saturday evening dinners at the Wayside restaurant with his close friend Drue Pratt.
A life member of the Italian Mutuo Soccorso Club (with more than 50 years of membership), he held many positions throughout the years. He was instrumental in bringing Bingo into the Club activities. He served as Newsletter Editor of the Barre Kiwanis Club, and sat on committees for the Honors for Scholars Banquet and Kiwanis Auction. His memberships include the Barre Elks, Canadian Club and American Legion. He also volunteered for several years at the Barre Opera House and the Central Vermont Hospital, including performing in the 1974 Central Vermont Hospital Follies with Maria at his side. Jim coordinated the North End Golden Era Reunion for many years and was a devout member of St. Monica’s Church.
He had ten grandchildren: Martin Joseph and Maria (Mia) Beede Snetsinger; Anthony James and John Mathew Broggini; Angela Plante Macri and Christopher Joseph Plante; Joseph Byrne, Anna Margarita, James Francis, and Katherine Carcoba Carroll; and one great-grandson , Dakota Michael Beede. Jim is pre-deceased by his parents, Margherita (Moretti) and Cirillo Broggini, his sister, Anna Broggini Puente, and his beloved wife Maria Carcoba Broggini, who passed away on September 20, 1999.
With the assistance of his children, Tino’s wife, Carolyn MacLeod Broggini, wonderful caregivers, and lifelong friends, Jim was provided with comfort in his home until June of 2017.
Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017 in St. Monica Church. Burial will follow in the Hope Cemetery in Barre.

BARRE – Pearl Audrey (Manning) Brooks
....show , 84, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.
Born on November 23, 1932 in Duxbury, she was the daughter of Wilbert J. Manning and Avis P. Perry.
Pearl attended Spaulding High School and graduated in 1950. She then attended the Barre City Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1953.
She married James Brooks on November 13, 1954 in St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre. Following their marriage, they made their home in Barre, although they eventually bought a place in St. Petersburg, FL and spent their winters there. He passed away in August 2014.
Pearl worked at the Barre City Hospital and the Central Vermont Hospital as a registered nurse. She also worked at Brooks Granite Company.
In her spare time, Pearl spent lots of time with family and friends at her Joe’s Pond camp. We will all remember the great times spent there. She was also very active in square dancing, hunting and fishing as well as an avid bowler and bingo player.
Pearl was a loving and caring mother, nana, aunt and sister and will be missed by all that came in touch with her. She had a way of making everyone smile.
Survivors include her children, David Brooks of Graniteville; Jodi Metivier of Barre; and Francis (Bonnie) Brooks of Tampa, FL; grandchildren Francis Brooks II, Crystal Brooks, Samantha Metivier, Jennifer and Savannah Brooks; great-grandchildren Bella and Callie Brooks; brother Perry (Marcia) Manning of Pensacola, FL; sister Durinda (Ron) Larivee of St. Petersburg, FL; sister-in-law Janice Manning of East Barre; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Douglas Manning.
A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held later in the spring.

MARSHFIELD – Clifton J. “Clif” Burroughs
....show , 81, of U.S. Route 2 passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017, at Florida Hospital in Deland.
Born November 8, 1935, in Walden, he was the son of Howard and Ella (Stearns) Burroughs. Clif attended King Elementary School and Marshfield Elementary School. Later he served in the Vermont Army National Guard.
On July 29, 1959, Clif married Audra L. Thomas in Cabot.After their marriage, they made their home in Marshfield.
Clif was employed at Goddard College in maintenance and as a painter for 25 years after which he worked for himself for 16 years, retiring in 1997.
He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed classic cars, traveling, and spending the winter months in Astor, Florida.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Audra of Marshfield; his daughter Cathy Burroughs Gosselin of Woodbury and his son Neal H. Burroughs of Hertford, NC; ten grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Cindy L. Townsend and his son-in-law Dale A. Townsend.
Services to honor and celebrate his life will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the Church of God of Prophecy in Marshfield. A time of fellowship will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in the Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier.

She was a loving, devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many and is survived by her children, Lisa the wife of Alan Brandt, Charles Calcagni, Carol the wife of Tim Fitzgerald, and Nicole Calcagni the wife of Brent Buckman all of Rochester, NY, Lori the wife of Michael Olsen of Westford, VT, and Tara the wife of Richard Rambaldo of La Jolla, CA and daughter-in-law Lori Calcagni; and grandchildren, Aneliese and Lara Brandt, James, Anna and Teo Olsen, Emma and Charlie Calcagni, Timmy and Madeleine Fitzgerald, George and Louisa Buckman and Luciana Rambaldo.
Bernadette’s life will be honored and celebrated with her Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre.

....show , 94, of Camp Street, died early Saturday Morning, December 23, 2017 at her home.
Born in Waterbury on March 24, 1923, she was the daughter of Emilio and Edvige (Brusa) Campi.
She had attended the Franklin School of Science, the University of Vermont and Norwich University.
Nevia had worked as a Medical Technologist part time at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington and for 12 years at the former Barre City Hospital.
She later became a social worker for the Department of Social Welfare and Social Services, later the Agency of Human Services, for the State of Vermont. Nevia had been a Supervisor, Director of Social Welfare, District Director of Social Services and retired as Director of Operations after 27 years of service.
She enjoyed painting in oils, reverse glass painting, theorem and decorative art and choir singing with the Barre Congregational Church for many years as well as other local groups. Nevia was also a member of the Bell Choir at her church.
She enjoyed pets, home entertaining and cooking.
Her memberships also included the Altrusa Club and the Vermont Conference of Social Concerns where she served as Secretary/Treasurer and was a past President.
Nevia also was a past Matron of Ruth Chapter #33 OES of Barre and had been treasurer of the Vermont State Rainbow Girls Association.
Survivors include David, Pat, Tim, Nick and Cassie Ross, cousins, many friends and her beloved dog, “Asti”.
For those of you who made it possible for Nevia not having to leave her home, thanks to Donna., Cathy, Theresa, Dorothy, Carolyn, Liz and Jackie as well as the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice and her special nurse, Mary.

Born May 20, 1934 in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Grover) Thibault.
Jean attended elementary and high schools in Springfield, MA and was a member of the class of 1952.
On August 21, 1954 she married Walter Codling at the Holy Cross Church in Springfield, MA. Following their marriage they made their home in Massachusetts until 1970 when they moved to Marshfield. Walter passed away in May 1995.
Jean was a homemaker and especially enjoyed spending time with her children and their families, as well as taking trips to Maine, knitting and going camping.She was of catholic faith and prayed every night for her loved ones.
Survivors include her sons, Paul Codling and his wife, Kathy of Marshfield; David Codling and his wife, Marie of Barre; and Joseph Codling of Marshfield; grandchildren Brooklyn, Ethan, and Zachary; sisters-in-law Jo-Ann Joubert and Kathie Thibault; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Walter Codling, son Peter Codling, and Brother Norman Thibault.

BARRE TOWN – Ernest E. “Jake” Colgan
....show , 89, of Wildersburg Common, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 with his family at his bedside at his home.
Born May 19, 1927 in Brookfield, VT, he was the son of Rufus and Minnie (Drown) Colgan. He attended elementary school in East Roxbury and graduated from Northfield High School in 1945.
Jake was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, from 1946 to 1948 and had been awarded the World War II Victory Medal.
He was first married to Rena Williamson and they later divorced. On July 1, 1976, Jake married Sandra J. Pouliot in Barre City, making their home on Cassie Street and for over 30 years at their present residence.
He will be well remembered as a long-time granite manufacturer in Barre, owning and operating Granite Importers, Inc., specializing in providing building granite.
Jake had been a member of the Vermont Economic Development Association and the Barre Granite Association.
He enjoyed racing stock cars, snowmobiling and boating.
Being a long-time Mason, he belonged to the Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier and the Grand Lodge of Vermont.
Other memberships included the Mutuo, Inc., the Canadian Club and the Elks Club of Barre and the Northfield American Legion.
Besides his wife Sandra, survivors include his daughter Penny Miller of East Roxbury and son Bruce Colgan and his wife, Diane of Berlin; his stepson Raymond Pouliot of Barre City and his stepdaughter Kimberley Minervini of Buckeye, AZ; eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters Barbara Sanders and Norma Brunelle and brothers Bernard, Floyd and Leon Colgan.
The Service to Honor and Celebrate his life will be held Monday, May 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

....show , 94, a long-time resident of Windridge Drive, died Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient about a year.
Born April 25, 1923 in North Adams, MA, she was the daughter of Roy D. and Alma (Hampel) Germaine. She attended area schools and was a graduate of Drury High School in North Adams, MA in 1941.
On April 6, 1946 she married James Connell in Stamford, VT. Following their marriage, they made their home in Clarksburg, MA, Stamford, VT and Amherst, NH. They moved to their home on Windridge Drive in 1976. James died October 30, 2004 at his residence.
During her working career, she was a laboratory tester for the former Sprague Electric Company in Barre.
“Toni” had belonged to the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre City as well as the Cobble Hill Grange and the AARP. Being an avid reader, she and her late husband were volunteer workers at the Aldrich Public Library in Barre City for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband, James in 2004 and has no immediate survivors.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Entombment will be made in the Hooker and Whitcomb Receiving Vault to await burial next to her beloved husband at the Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town. There are no calling hours.

BERLIN – Edith Jennie “Edie” Cooper
....show , 91, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Woodridge Nursing Home.
Born on June 18, 1926, she was the daughter of Roy and Vera (Wheeler) Moore. She attended local schools.
Edie married Albert Jack Cooper in October of 1966 and settled into her new role as a homemaker thoroughly enjoying it. Whatever Edie and Jack did, they did together. Travelling, camping, gardening and making crafts were a few of the many hobbies they shared.Jack died May 10, 2015.
Survivors include her niece, Julie Richert, the daughter of her heart, and her husband, Bob of Berlin along with many other nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Connie Moore of Springfield, Mary Moore of Williamstown, and Gladys Perkins of Somerset, MA.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings.

WEBSTERVILLE – Willard Pierre “Goo” Couillard
....show , 88 of Brook Street passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Woodridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. His loving family was with him at his bedside.
Born January 13, 1929 in Graniteville, he was the son of Avila and Maude (Jeanette) Couillard.
Goo attended elementary school in Graniteville and graduated from Spaulding High School with the class of 1947. On May 11, 1948 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea refueling jets for occupation and chauffeuring the Chaplain to his many duties. He was honorably discharged on May 14, 1952.
On November 6, 1954 he married Marjorie Payne in the St. Sylvester Church in Graniteville. After their marriage they lived in Graniteville. In 1964, they bought a home in Websterville and lived there for 53 years together.
Goo was first employed by Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut. He moved back to Vermont and worked for Couillard Heating Oil as a delivery truck driver for 39 ½ years, retiring in 1992.
His memberships included the St. Monica and St. Sylvester parishes and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #790. He was a past member of the Canadian Club and the American Legion Post #10 both of Barre as well as the St. Jean the Baptiste Club also of Barre.
Goo enjoyed camping with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, cross country skiing, playing cribbage, going bowling and playing pitch at his brother Homer’s gas station on Sunday mornings. He and Marjorie liked to travel and made several trips out west, as well as many trips to Maine, staying at the “Breakers” on Higgins Beach.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; his daughter Charmane McKenzie and her husband, Stephen of Swanton; his sons Charles “Chuck” Couillard and his wife, Rhonda of Barre and Daniel Couillard and his wife, Sandra of Williamstown; his grandchildren Tara McKenzie Partlow, Ryan McKenzie, Racheal Couillard Hill, and Matthew Couillard; 6 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister Eva Sartwell of Concord, NH.
He was predeceased by his parents, his grandson Daniel Willard Couillard II, and his siblings Edmund, Homer, William, Alice, Leo, Raymond, Paul, Emile, Richard, Albert, Charles, Genevieve, and Maurice.

Born December 19, 1996 in Berlin, Meghan was the daughter of Tom Couture and Deb Caruso.
She was a graduate of Spaulding High School in 2015 and a student at Community College of Vermont until December of 2016, studying early childhood education. She hoped to be a kindergarten teacher one day.
Meghan loved spending time with her family, music, food, baking, the beach, swimming and dancing.She always had a smile and kind word, never judgmental and always compassionate. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Born May 9, 1929 in St. Johnsbury, she was the daughter of Archie and Julia (Collins) LaPoint. Joyce attended Spaulding High School.
On March 8, 1947, Joyce married Laurel Ray Danforth in the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre. Following their marriage, they lived in several central Vermont areas, including Fairlee and East Barre.He died June 5, 2000.
Joyce worked for Capitol Stationers in charge of the book department and worked for several other businesses in the Central Vermont area. She later worked in the cashier department for the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in both Hanover, NH and Lebanon, NH for approximately fifteen years until her retirement.
She enjoyed sewing, crafts, and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Danforth and his wife, Christine of Concord, NH; grandchildren Shaun Danforth and his wife, Heidi and their son Bailey; Heather Danforth; Erin Tsiatsios and her husband, Tim and their daughter Isla; Jeffrey Sauvigne and his wife, Michelle; Nicole Heimarck and her husband, Steven and their children; her sister Dorothy “Dot” Lamb of Berlin as well as nieces and nephews.

Born on June 23, 1961 in Barre, she was the daughter of William and Ruby (Sayers) Erno. She attended elementary school in Barre and was a graduate of Spaulding High School in 1979. Following her schooling Lori, made her home in the Barre Area.
Lori worked for many years for Hannafords as Scan File Coordinator. She thoroughly enjoyed her Job and the people whom she worked with.
She had many hobbies and interests throughout her life, but most enjoyable to her was relaxing around a campfire, attending functions, and spending time with her loving family.
Survivors include her father, William F. Erno, Sr. of Barre; two sons, Ray Davis of Hardwick and Jeremy Davis and his wife, Vanessa, of Manchester, VT; and three sisters, Deborah Welsh and her husband, Tom, of Barre, Judy Blanchette and her husband, Ray, of Barre and Lisa Stachulski and her husband, Ted, of Sandown, NH.
She was predeceased by her mother, Ruby Erno, and two brothers, William F. Erno, Jr. and Steven Erno.

....show of Lower Road, died on Friday, May 12, 2017 at his home in Naples, Florida.
Born on May 25, 1921 in Barre, he was the son of Ralph Earl and Edith Marie (Sprague) Davis.
An active man, Robert was blessed with good health through most of his long life. After retiring from his career as a real estate executive with Cities Service Oil, he and his wife Marsha Davis (Murray) built a home with a view of the Green Mountains in Plainfield. They lived there happily until her death in December 2011. He lived independently until fracturing his hip four months ago. We were blessed to have him, in sound mind, as long as we did.
He is dearly missed by his two children, Mark Davis of Plainfield and Vaune Davis of Toronto, Canada. He had six grandchildren: Jessica, Catherine and Michael Davis of Winchester, MA and Peter, Ethan and Helen Rotenberg of Toronto, Canada. He was beloved by his nieces and nephews including Richard, Tammy and Deborah Davis and Valerie Blachly of Barre; and Alicia and Scott Murray of Sudbury, MA.
Robert was predeceased by his wife, Marsha; his three younger brothers Richard, Ralph and Raymond; his sister Jacqueline Kelsey; and his dear niece Sherry Wheale.
A memorial service will be held in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., after which his remains will be interred at the Elmwood Cemetery, with full military honors for his service to our country during World War Two. BARRE TOWN, VERMONT – Thomas C. Davis
....show , 85, of Wildersburg Common, died unexpectedly on the evening of February 16th. He was a seventeenth generation Vermonter, political activist, public speaker, storyteller, author and statesman.Also known as “Tom Terrific”, he was widely admired for his quick wit, humor, humility, kindness, wisdom and generosity. He valued tolerance, forgiveness, compassion and activity, and lived his life accordingly.
Tom was born in Barre, Vermont on November 30, 1931 to the parents of the late Governor Deane C. Davis and Corinne Eastman Davis, also of Barre. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1949 and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of Vermont. He was married in 1952 to his best friend Delores “Dolly” Pruneau also of Barre. Over their 65 years together they raised nine children and enjoyed traveling and spending time together with a vast network of friends and family.
He was the author of two novels and three memoirs, and had a long and distinguished career in public administration. After a brief stint in the insurance industry, he spent the rest of his life helping the poor and disadvantaged members of society. He was the founder of the Vermont Office of Economic Opportunity under the administration of former Governor Philip Hoff, and was appointed as Secretary of the Agency of Human Services under the administration of former Governor Tom Salmon. He later became the State Director for Senator Patrick J. Leahy until he was appointed the former Regional Representative for the U. S. Department of Labor under Secretary Robert Reich.
Indifferent to material success, Tom often pronounced that he was born with a “social justice gene”. He was a strong advocate of supporting the economy through a focus on human resource needs, organized labor and substance abuse counseling. Up to just a few months before his death, he was actively engaged in lobbying and supporting the development of services related to employment and training, mental health, and elder care. He was on the Board of numerous organizations in Barre and around northern Vermont including the Committee on Vermont Elders, the American Heart Association, the Old Labor Hall, and the Vermont Historical Society. He was also a member of many organizations including the Vermont Democratic Party, the Country Club of Barre, and the Mutuo, Inc. in Barre.
Like his father, Tom was “conditioned to Vermont” and connected with people in almost every corner of the state. A great storyteller, he often reminisced about the people he met from all walks of life. He was in the midst of recording and transcribing oral histories that will be available at a later date. Tom engaged in many hobbies and passions including classical music, literature, chess, baseball, skiing, rooting for the “mighty New York Giants”, and golf. Golf was a passion he was able to enjoy even during the last couple of years as his health began to fail. Humble, yet astute, he often announced that “anyone can play golf with a good swing – try playing golf with my swing.” This remark was typical of the many one-liners he used to entertain anyone who would listen.
Survivors include his wife Delores, 85, his nine children and their spouses, Michael Davis and his wife Sylvia, of Barre, Corinne Davis of Montpelier, Linda and Duane Chambers of Brookfield, Julie Davis of Williston, Timothy Davis of Ocala, Florida, Daniel Davis and his husband Steve Chalmers of Colchester, Dawn Davis Wolk and her husband Jay of Fairfield, Connecticut, David Davis and his wife Danna of Bethesda, Maryland, and Richard Davis of Poughkeepsie, New York. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Marion Davis Calcagni, her husband Frank of Ocala, Florida, and a beloved grandson, Bentley Davis Seifer.
Calling hours will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at the Hooker Whitcomb Funeral Home on 7 Academy Street in Barre, Vermont. A time of fellowship and remembrance will be celebrated at the Vermont Labor Hall on Friday, February 24th from 3-6 pm. Later internment will occur at the Elmwood Cemetery in Barre at a time convenient to his family.

BARRE TOWN – Leona Mae Day
....show , 83, of Bianchi Street, peacefully passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Her loving family was with her at her bedside.
Born on June 30, 1933 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Earle and Alnora (Woodruff) Cleveland. She attended elementary school in Worcester and was a graduate of Montpelier High School in 1951.
Following her schooling she made her career working for the State of Vermont, where she retired after many years of dedicated service.
In April 1977 she married, Ewing “Bill” Day, in a ceremony held in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Berlin. The two made their home together in the Barre area for the remainder of Leona’s life.
She was a longtime and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Berlin, a Cub Scout Den Mother and enjoyed teaching Acrobatic Tap Dancing.
Leona had many hobbies and interests throughout her life. The most important of these included her love of painting, horseback riding, going dancing, her animals, and most of all her precious family and children.
Survivors include her husband, Ewing “Bill’ Day; two sons, Gary Cooley of Barre and Kenneth Conley of South Barre; three daughters, Ronda Guazzoni and her partner, Jim Covino, of Middlesex, Brenda Donahue and her partner, Gary Donahue, of East Barre, and Joanne Thompson and her husband, Greg, of Hillsboro, OR; a step-son David Day and his wife, Deana, of Port St. Lucie, FL; as well as 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Kim Cooley.
Leona’s life will be honored and celebrated at a graveside service in the Cutler Cemetery in East Montpelier in the spring at the convenience of the family.

EAST BARRE – Lucille S. DeForge
....show , 82, of Mill Street, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017 at her home with her loving family at her bedside.
Born on April 24, 1935, she was the daughter of John and Vivian (York) Smith. She attended elementary and high school at St. Michael’s School in Montpelier, graduating with the class of 1953.
On September 18, 1954 she married James DeForge in the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Montpelier. He passed away in February of 1995.
After their marriage, Lucille and James settled in Montpelier before moving to East Barre. They lived most of their married lives in Orange.
Lucille was employed at the Gary Home in Montpelier and then for many years she worked at Rowan Court Nursing Home.She was a member of the St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church in East Barre and the Ladies of St. Anne. In her spare time, she loved dancing, shopping, cooking, watching Nascar and Red Sox and most of all spending time with family and friends at her camp in Isle LaMotte.
Survivors include her sons James DeForge of Barre; Robert DeForge and his wife, Valerie of Barre; her daughters Susan Comstock and her husband, Jerry of Barre; Debra Fraser and her partner Jim Foss of Elmore; and Lisa Marie DeForge and her partner, Richard Plude, Jr., of Barre; nine grandchildren Jamie DeForge, Linda DeForge, Robert DeForge, Jr., Adam DeForge, Jerry J. Comstock, Jennifer Collins, Lauren Fraser, Amanda Flynn, and Ronald Harper; twelve great-grandchildren; as well as her siblings John Smith of Venice, FL; Betty Griffith and her husband, Jesse of Williamstown; Donald Smith of East Montpelier, and Lois Acebo of East Barre.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband James DeForge; and her companion Larry Jacques.

Born on June 16, 1952 in Barre, she was the daughter of Willard and Pauline (Marceau) Demers. Rena attended Williamstown Schools and graduated with the class of 1969. She also attended Johnson State College.
Rena made her home in Barre, although she spent many years in Florida where she loved the sandy beaches and sunshine.
Rena was an amazing artist. She enjoyed volunteering with Prevent Child Abuse Vermont and for the bingo games at the Waterbury Senior Center. Also, she loved reading to the blind. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her siblings, Phil Demers and his wife, Ellen of Woodbury; Irene Tash and her husband, Francis of North Montpelier; Roy Demers of Woodbury; Judy Shatney and her husband, Brian of Woodbury; Laurie Ewen and her husband, Art of Wolcott; Sharon Russell and her husband, Keith of Barre; Karen Demers of Barre; Paul Demers and his wife, Karen of Barre; and Susan Demers Delphia of Woodbury, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

WILLIAMSTOWN – Michelina Maria Dickinson
....show , 78, of Hebert Road passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at her niece’s home.
Born October 14, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Frank and Conchetta (Larosa) Bavaro. Michelina attended schools in Brooklyn, NY before moving to New Britain, CT.
While living in New Britain, she met Richard Dickinson, Sr. and they were married in Connecticut in April of 1970. After their marriage they moved to Williamstown, VT.
Michelina attended the Thompson School of Nursing and graduated as Valedictorian of her class. After graduation, she worked at Rowan Court as a nurse for ten years. During this time, she was also a member of the Williamstown Select board, and served as Health Officer for the town as well as being an EMT.Richard and Michelina decided to move back to Connecticut and she worked at the Haven Health Center as a nurse for over 14 years before eventually moving back to Vermont.
In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking especially Italian food, fishing, camping and most of all spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children, Richard Dickinson, Jr., and his companion, Donna of Bristol, CT; Laurie Dickinson of Williamstown, VT; John Smith of Kingsford, ME; and Ramona Smith and her husband, Larry Manning of Norwich, CT; her grandchildren Brittany, Josh, Jamie, Martha, Casey and Christian; several great-grandchildren; her niece Helen Duke and her husband, Horace with whom she lived, as well as several other nieces and nephews; and her brothers Franky, Dominic, Vito, and Tommy.

ORANGE – Rodney Dean Dimick
....show , 68, of US Route 302, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017, at his home with his family at his bedside.
Born on September 22, 1948 in Hardwick, he was the son of Robert and Amy (Hanks) Dimick. He attended Walden Elementary School and graduated from Danville High School in 1966.
Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving from 1966 to 1969. He later joined the Vermont Army National Guard 50th MP Company in Northfield.
Rodney was first married to Linda Salls and they later divorced. On April 19, 2002, he married Melissa Ann Chateauvert at their home in Orange.
Rodney worked for Walker Motors, Inc. in Montpelier for seven years and for twenty-two years worked at Green Mountain Power Company. More recently, for the past fifteen years, he was the owner and operator of R&M Maintenance.He was a former member of the American Legion Post 59 of Waterbury.
Rodney loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing and bird watching. He took pleasure in working with his hands and especially loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa Dimick of Orange; his children, Pamela Chase and her husband, Dwight and children, David “DJ” and Jessica Stone of Orange; Rodney R. Dimick and his wife, Dawn of Marshfield and their children, Angelia D’Amico, Elizabeth McNary, and Christine Paige; Joseph Dimick and his wife, Heidi of Plainfield and daughter, Sydney Dimick; Michael Lemieux and his fiancée, Alicia Hrubovcak of Graniteville; Timothy Lemieux and his companion, Jessica Symonds of Williston; and Kaylee Lemieux of Montpelier. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Corey, Devontay, Braeden, and Azile; his sister, Betty Mercier of Hardwick; his brother, Leslie Dimick of Maine; and nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will follow the service in the Brook Haven Cemetery in Orange.

BARRE – Harold W. Duff
....show , 72, of Hill Street passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at his home with his loving family at his bedside.
Born November 24, 1944 in Middletown, CT, he was the son of Francis and Emma (DeWolf) Duff.
Harold attended Boyce Elementary School in Williamstown, VT; then Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Middletown, CT; returning to Vermont and graduating from Williamstown High School with the Class of 1962. After graduation, he returned to live in Middletown, CT before moving back to Vermont.
On June 29, 1968, he married Betty Phillips in the Williamstown Congregational Church. After their marriage they made their home in Williamstown, eventually settling at their current residence in Barre.
Harold spent his entire working career in the granite industry. He was employed by Valz Granite Company, Rock of Ages, Buttura and Sons and after many years retired from Duff Granite Sales.
Harold was a longtime member of the Canadian Club of Barre.He loved anything to do with cars, including watching Nascar racing. Also, he especially loved spending time with his family and friends and driving his granddaughter, Mya, to school in the “Blue Bus”.
Survivors include his wife Betty J. Duff of Barre; his daughters Pamela Morin and her husband, Rodney; Bethann Duff; and Christine Perry and her husband, Lance all of Barre Town; his grandchildren Collin Morin, Mya Perry, Hayley Perry, and Rebekah Shatney; his brothers Raymond Duff and his wife, Centhy of Barre Town; Robert Duff and his wife, Mary of Gate City, FL; and his sister Charlene Farnham and her husband, Robert (Boomer) of Washington; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Fred Duff.

WEST TOPSHAM – Norman Maurice “Pete” Dunn
....show , 79, of US Route 302, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction.
Born on October 14, 1937 in Hancock, he was the son of Herman and Jennie (Andrews) Dunn. He attended school in Hancock.
In 1957, Pete enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the Marine Aircraft Group 11 and was honorably discharged in 1960.
On March 17, 1961, Pete Married Dorothy Ann Spencer in Orange. Following their marriage, they made their home in Orange and East Orange before moving to West Topsham.
Pete had worked as a quarry man for the Wells Lamson Granite Company and as a truck driver for the Rock of Ages Granite Company. For many years, he had worked in construction and truck driving, owning his own construction business and Dunn’s Transportation. He also ran equipment in the logging business.
He enjoyed the outdoors, brook fishing, hunting, motorcycle riding, and camping. He enjoyed driving racecars at Thunder Road and Bear Ridge and later on watching as a fan. Spending time with his family and friends were special to him.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dunn of West Topsham; his daughters, Debbie Shepard and her husband, Bob of East Orange and Brenda Bruleigh and her husband, Tony of Waits River; his son, Randy Dunn and his wife, Annette of West Topsham; seven grandchildren, Tracie and her husband, Adam Longto, Jessica Placey and her husband, Thomas, Ryan Bruleigh, Amanda Dunn and her fiancé, Trevor Cote, Lindsey Shepard and her fiancé, Garett Brusseau, Scott Dunn and Craig Shepard and his wife, Denise; nine great-grandchildren, Abby, Ava, Sierra, Jessica, Jordan, Josh, Alexis, Kenzie and Antonio; his brother, Larry Dunn of Williamstown; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Marlene West and Madelean Conley; and brothers, Roland Dunn and Crawford Dunn.

BARRE TOWN – Harry Gale Eastman
....show , 87, of School Road, died unexpectedly, on Friday, May 19, 2017, at his home.
Born in Barre City on September 28, 1929, he was the son of John and Edith (Hamel) Eastman. He attended Brook Street Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1947. On June 3, 1950, he married Maureen D. Crowley in St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville. Following their marriage, they made their home in Springfield, VT and Barre city before moving to their present residence in 1965.Maureen died on April 4, 2004.
In earlier years, he had worked as a machinist in Springfield. He will be well remembered as a long time employee of the Green Mountain Power Company in Montpelier. He initially worked as a lineman, was promoted to a foreman and retired as a Lineman Supervisor in 1992.
Hunting, dancing, kayaking, flying his own plane and the out of doors were things he loved.
Harry was a veteran of the U.S. Army Service, serving from 1947 to 1948 in the Engineer Corps and was discharged as a Private at Fort Belvoir, VA.
His memberships included the Barre American Legion Post #10 and MacKenzie Webster VFW Post #790 on the East Barre Road.
Survivors include his daughter Kathy Vincent and husband John of Roseville, CA; and sons Kelly Eastman and his companion Michelle Amaral of East Montpelier; Bradley Eastman and wife, Jody of South Barre and John Eastman and his wife, Julie of Hinesburg and eight grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and his long-time companion Diane Paulger of Barre City.
Besides his wife, Maureen, he was predeceased by his parents, his son Brian, his sisters Lois Nolli and Anita Ball and brother John Eastman, Jr.
Harry’s life will be honored and celebrated on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Barre American Legion Post #10 with a formal ceremony followed by a sharing time and luncheon.

PLAINFIELD - Guy Matthew Edson
....show , 60, of Plainfield, passed away unexpectedly due to an aneurysm on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He was born on January 29, 1957 in Brooklyn, NY to Russell Charles Edson and Eleanor Theresa (Connelly) Edson.
Guy attended early graded school in Bethpage, NY and at age 11 moved to Brookfield, VT with his family. He then attended Brookfield Elementary School and Randolph Union High School. After high school, Guy began working for his family's business, Northeast Granite in Montpelier and would later become the proud owner. He married Patty, his high school sweetheart, at the tender age of 20 and shortly after starting their family, they made their home base on Upper Road in Plainfield.
He loved vacationing in Key Largo, Florida with his family and the many deep sea-fishing adventures. After becoming passionate about gardening, he furthered his education by attending the Master Gardeners course at UVM extension.
Guy was a passionate man that was a devoted father and family man and an avid gardener to his prized aronia and blueberry farm. He had a huge and compassionate heart. His enthusiasm was infectious. He reached out to everyone and anyone that he could help. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, his two camps on Holland Pond, fishing, reading, and cooking for others, especially his Aronia muffins. Humor was never lacking in any conversation. He was an entrepreneur like no other and was the proud owner of Northeast Granite, Granite Creations, and the Vibe Farm.
Guy is survived by his wife, Patricia Degen Edson and their three children that he was very proud of: Sarah Edson Rowan and her husband, D. Walker Rowan and their 2 children, Noah (his "fishing buddy" and "mini me") and Eleanor Rowan, his son and business partner, Christopher Edson, and his little girl "Livy" Olivia Edson.
He is also survived by his devoted mother and best friend, Eleanor Theresa Edson, his brothers, Russell Edson Jr. and wife, Marla Edson, Gary Edson and wife, Patty Edson, William Edson and his wife, Terri Edson, as well as a sister, Kathleen Edson Davidson, his mother-in-law, Patricia Maynard and several loving sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In Heaven, he has joined his father, Russell C. Edson, Sr. and brother, Dr. Brian Edson MD and all of the other loving extended relatives.
Guy ended his life being "high on life." He was at peace, having fun, and close to God, just as it should be.
Calling hours are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 10th at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. His funeral service will be held at St. Augustine's Catholic Church on Barre Street in Montpelier on February 11th at 11 a.m. Following the service, a time of fellowship and refreshments will be in the fellowship hall downstairs.

....show , 81, of the Merrimack County Nursing Home, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Concord Hospital in Concord, NH.
Born April 11, 1936 in Peabody, MA, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Blanche A. (Tetreault) Dumas. She graduated from St. John’s Parish High School for Girls in Peabody, MA in 1954.
Delia worked at CBS Hytron in Danvers MA where she met and married Kenneth Emerson on January 25, 1957. Delia left CBS in 1960 to begin raising their family in Saugus, MA. In 1973, the family moved to East Montpelier, VT.
Dee loved spending time with her family, her children and grandchildren. She was kind and considerate, always willing to help others. Dee gave her time and skills freely and we all benefited from the goodness she carried in her heart. She loved reading, gardening, playing BINGO and cards (especially 31 and Crazy 8’s), sitting on the porch at the Washington Street Apartments watching the entertainment during the Annual Heritage Festival (Barre VT). She enjoyed eating lobster and strawberry shortcake and watching the Boston Red Sox.

She was born Nov 10, 1932 in Haverhill, NH, the daughter of Frank A. and Rose, (Bates) Sawyer. She made her home in Wells River and graduated from Wells River High School in 1950 where she was Vice President of her class and Captain of the women’s basketball team. She attended Lyndon Teachers College and Toccoa Falls Bible College in Toccoa, GA.
On Oct 11, 1952 she married William N. Emery of Groton VT. They lived in Groton until 1954, when they moved to Toccoa, Ga. They returned to Vermont in December of 1968 with their 5 children.
She was a member of the Washington Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was an alternate pianist for Sunday services.
Barbara enjoyed walking, swimming, x-country skiing, being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and she loved to travel, walk on the beach, and watch the Red Sox and Celtics win.
Survivors include a son, William Emery Jr and his wife, Barbara, of Washington and three daughters, Sarah Joy Ibey and her husband, Robert, of St Petersburg FL; Judy Watker and her husband Edward, and Jeanne Jean and her companion, Michael Piro, all of Barre, Daughter In-law Liselle Emery also of St Petersburg, FL, 10 Grandchildren, 12 Great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.
She was predeceased by her husband William Emery, son Daniel Emery, son-in-law Philip Jean, sisters Lillian Keagan, Mary Martin, Doris Tumalty, and brothers, Bill Vigneau, and Edward Sawyer.
A memory time to honor and celebrate the life of Barbara Anne Emery will be held Friday, October 27, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in her church, the First Baptist Church, 24 Washington Street, Barre, VT.

GRANITEVILLE – Roland Gilbert Fournier
....show , 84, a lifelong citizen of the “Hill” peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin with his loving family gathered at his bedside.
He was born in Barre City on August 27, 1932, to the French and Scot families of Conrad “Buchie” Fournier and Jeannine Smith.
He received his elementary education at the Holy Ghost Convent and graduated in 1950 from the old Spaulding High School on Washington Street.
His military service to his country was in Korea arriving on his 21st birthday, but it was also after the Treaty had been signed and his army duties were as a MP.
After a safe return home on Christmas Eve he continued working for Rock of Ages in the Quarries.
Even though the Fournier and Goulet families knew each other, it was until 1955 when Doris Goulet started working at the brand new Rock of Ages Manufacturing Plant that they started dating. They were married on June 22, 1957 when ladies still wore hats in church we have proof in our wedding pictures. The union brought 5 very special children, David, Bruce, Wayne, Linda and Kevin within the next 15 years. The family made a cross country month long camping trip.
In 1961 Roland was involved, along with Floyd McNally in a quarry accident; their lives were surely saved that day by the professional engineer John Michell and the crew. We were so thankful to them and Dr. John Perry who had been lowered in the hole for their medical care. After recuperating, Roland moved to a desk job as the Stock Clerk Inventory Manager managing and he retired in 1993.
Together, he and Doris traveled to many different cities and 13 states for legion conferences, conventions and other events including marching in parades, baseball and Boys State.
His memberships included: Quarter Century Club of Rock of Ages for 43 years, lifetime member of St. Sylvester Church where he served as an altar boy, Barre Town Democratic Committee member and poll worker, Justice of the Peace in Barre Town having received a certificate of recognition for serving in this role for over 30 years, Barre Senior Center, lifetime member of 63 years of The American Legion Post #10 of Barre where he served 2 terms as commander, finance officer, involved in legion baseball and served on the children and youth committee as well as many other committees, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #790 of Barre where he served as commander as well as finance officer, member of the committee on children and youth as well as many other committees, Barre Lodge of Elks #1535, United Steelworkers Union, Graniteville Fire District and Water Supply, member of the National Security Committee for the National American Legion for 5 years a highlight of which was touring the original launch pad in Cape Canaveral, FL, “Anavicus” – honorary life member of Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada and long-time member of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux “The Society of 40 men and eight horses”.
In his spare time through the years, Roland enjoyed Al Monty square dances at Barre Town School with his children, playing cribbage with the Scot Gordon Cribbage League, bowling at Twin City Lanes, and Sunday morning card games at Couillard’s Garage.
Survivors include his wife Doris of Graniteville; son David Fournier and his wife, Kelly of East Montpelier; son Bruce Fournier of Berlin; daughter Linda Bouffard and her husband, Tom of Williamstown; son Kevin Fournier and his wife, Sonya of Sutton, MA; grandchildrenErin and Bryant Cleveland, Bryce Cross and Chase Fournier; step-grandchildren Ashley and TJ Stanley, Elizabeth and Jason Cote-Wong, Christina and Natt Morris, Anna and Hendrik Reinhold, Tyler and Andrew Debrule; step-great grandchildren Valentina Morris, Lyvia Stanley, Jayden Cote-Wong; his sister Claire LaPerle and her husband, Norman of East Montpelier; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as former daughters-in-law Jennifer Hughes and Kym Cross.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Wayne while he was stationed at the US Army base in Arizona 34 years ago, his brother Robert Fournier.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Roland will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017, in the St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville. Interment will follow in the St. Sylvester Cemetery in Websterville. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

HANOVER, NH – David Bartlett Fowler
....show , 72, of Lyme Road, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer at the Hanover Terrace in Hanover. His family was at his bedside.
Born December 24, 1944 in Barre, VT, he was the son of Harold and Helen (Bartlett) Fowler.
David attended Plainfield Elementary School and graduated from Twinfield High School with the class of 1962. After high school, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1968.
He grew up in Plainfield and then lived in Shelburne, Barre, Montpelier, East Calais and Pennsylvania. He lived at The Kirby House in Waterbury before settling at Hanover Terrace in Hanover, NH.
David did upholstery work among other art-related jobs and in his spare time he loved painting. While he was living at Hanover Terrace he made gifts of small abstract paintings for many staff members.
He attended the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury.
Survivors include his daughter, Heather and his grandson, Jesse both of Philadelphia, PA; his sister Nan Fowler of South Royalton, VT; and his brother Kenneth Fowler of Wilder, VT as well as many cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents.

BARRE TOWN – Albert Weston Fraser
....show , 87, of Wilmuth Street, South Barre died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH with his loving family at his bedside.
Born April 7, 1929 in Upper Websterville, he was the son of John and Sadie (Wilson) Fraser. He attended Upper Websterville Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1947.
On December 29, 1951 he married Barbara Jean Bisson in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Most of their married life had been spent at their present residence.
Albert served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was assigned to the 278th Regiment Combat Team at Ft Devens, MA.
Following his discharge, he was employed by the Goddard’s SunBeam Bakery and for 31 years as a Salesman with Nestle Foods, retiring in 1991.
Being a devoted lifetime member of the Websterville Baptist Church, he had served on the Board of Deacons as well as being a Sunday school teacher.
Albert enjoyed spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren attending their many sports activities; his golf membership at the Northfield Country Club, the Central Vermont Square Dance Club and will be remembered as a player on the Websterville Baseball team in the Barre Town summer league in the 1940’s and early 1950’s. The Red Sox were his favorite.
Besides his wife Barbara, he leaves his daughters Cheryl Craig and her husband, Devon of Plainfield and Linda Tosi and her husband, Tom of Bradenton, FL; 6 grandchildren Megan Sandor and her husband, Alex; Carlie Cullen and her husband, Matt; Jessica Tosi, and Jordan, Keith and Damion Craig as well as 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Kathleen Fraser, Inez Rowell and Enid Mackie and his brother Elwin who died in infancy.
The Service to honor and celebrate Albert’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Websterville Baptist Church.
Entombment will be made in the Hooker and Whitcomb Receiving Vault to await burial in the Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town.

Born October 17, 1952 in Springfield, TN, he was the son of Rayburn and Faye (Nunley)Frey.
Terry attended high school in Manteno, IL. Following high school, he obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary and Music Education at Illinois State University.
On August 20, 1983, he married Loretta L. Mulligan in Randolph Center, VT. Following their marriage they lived in Marshfield, VT, Burlington, NC, and Windsor, VT before eventually settling in Williamstown.
Terry was employed as a music and choral teacher at Orange High School in Hillsborough, NC, Windsor High School and State Street School in Windsor, VT, Barre City Elementary and Middle School in Barre, VT and Twinfield Union School in Marshfield, VT.
In his spare time, Terry enjoyed music, art, baking, gardening, composing and writing. He was a member of the Ascutney Union Church in Ascutney, VT.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Frey of Williamstown; his sons Jacob Frey and his partner, Shirlaine DeForge of Groton, VT, Christopher Frey and his wife Habiba of Websterville; five grandchildren; his mother Faye Frey of Crossville, TN; and his brother William Frey of Crossville, TN.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his twin brother, Jerry Frey.

BARRE – The Service for Natalino J. “Nat” Galfetti
....show , who died on March 23, 2017, in Ruskin, FL will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Inurnment will follow the service at Hope Cemetery in Barre.
Nat was born September 18, 1921 in Morrisville, the son of Eugenio Galfetti and Josephine (Moretti) Galfetti, both born in Switzerland. On May 11, 1943, Nat married Rosemary Milo in Montpelier. They made their home in Barre, where they raised their three children.
Nat went to work when he was only nine years old to help support the family and worked steadily until he was 85. He was a WWII Army Veteran who proudly served with combat forces under General Patton in the European campaign.
In the late 1930’s, Nat hired on as a helper with the early pioneer of hauling granite out of Barre by trucks instead of by rail. He then worked as a driver himself until he joined the Army. When he returned to Barre, he hauled granite for a few years, and then went to work for the Barre Fire Department for six years. After hauling granite again, he went to work for Dubois trucking hauling oil. He then hired on with Shell Oil in Burlington, VT as a transport driver until the plant closed. He often talked about how much he enjoyed the years he worked for Bob DuBois and Shell Oil.
In later years, Nat and Rosie resided in Florida. Nat was a devoted and loving husband to Rosie who passed away in 2013. He is survived by his three children; Kathryn Sharp of Wimauma, FL; James Galfetti (Donna) of South Barre, VT; and Jack Galfetti of Edmund, OK. He also leaves four grandchildren; Dawna Burrow (Steve) of VA; Gina Galfetti and Christopher Galfetti of Dallas, TX and Hannah Galfetti of Edmund, OK; and three great grandchildren; Brynn, Riley and Nate, all of Virginia. He was predeceased by his older brother, Albert Galfetti.
Nat will be very much missed by the great many friends and relatives who loved him dearly. A special thank you, again, to Barb Williams and Bill Young.

BARRE CITY - Leona N. Garback
....show , 86, of Barre, VT, died April 20th with peace and grace at home with her loving family and caregivers by her side. Immediate family survivors include her loving husband, Rudolph Milan Garback of 65 years, two daughters, Sue Garback-Morton, of Barre, husband Robert Morton and their two sons, Jeff and Eric, and Gloria Garback, of Essex Junction, close friend Randy Parker, and Gloria's daughter Alison Cooley. Other family members include Leona's sister, Jeanette Culver and husband Jim of Lebanon, NH, as well as other family relations, including numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her feline companion, Oliver, who was always by her side until the end of her life. He continues to sleep where he always has and will miss her as we all will.
Leona was born at home in Calais on March 26, 1931, daughter of Robert Converse and Alice Slayton Converse. She grew up on the Converse farm, riding her horse to school daily, something she enjoyed doing for many years. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1949. She met her lifelong sweetheart, Rudy, during her senior year. They eventually married on September 28th, 1952, at the Old West Church in Calais.
Leona and Rudy lived many years on Barre Street in Montpelier. During that time, they had their two daughters, Susan and Gloria. They eventually purchased the Alpine Motel in 1969 and ran that until they sold it in 1987 and built their home in Barre where they have resided since.
Leona worked most of her life as a secretary for the Vermont State American Legion Headquarters in Montpelier. She worked hard, managing the motel, working, and raising her children. She was an active member of the Rural Carrier’s Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Hedding Methodist Church.
Favorite times for Leona were spending time at the family camp in Lake Elmore, going out dancing with Rudy and friends, and travelling to Florida during the winter months for many years. She also loved playing piano, gardening, cooking, knitting, and animals, of which she had many over the years. Her main priority, however, was caring for her husband and daughters, and later, spending time and spoiling her granddaughter, Ali. A natural gift Leona had was her kindness and being a natural caregiver to others, from injured birds she and Rudy would rescue to family and friends.
A graveside service is planned at the Berlin Cemetery on Saturday, April 29th, at 2:00 pm. Arrangements are being handled through Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home of Barre.
Special thanks go out to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice team who cared for her until the end with such grace and dignity, while sprinkling bits of humor just when we all needed it, as well as wonderful private caregivers who were with her over the past few years of her life. Special thanks to long time caregivers Lauren and Marie for allowing her to be all that she could as she declined and slipped away as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.

Born November 23, 1934 in Graniteville, she was the daughter of Raymond A. and Eleanor (Reilly) Craige.
She attended local elementary schools and graduated from Spaulding High School with the class of 1952.
On October 10, 1953, she married Robert Louis Gavin at the St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville. After their marriage, they made their home in East Barre before moving to Graniteville.
Beverly was a homemaker enjoying time spent with her family at home and at the family camp on Lake Eligo in Greensboro.
Survivors include her husband Robert L. Gavin of Graniteville; her son Michael Gavin also of Graniteville; her daughter Kay O’Neil and her husband, Frank of Barre; her grandson Christopher O’Neil and his wife, Nicole of Fort Ann, NY; and granddaughter Karin Yefchak and her husband, Matthew and their son, Cameron of Williamstown; and her sister Joyce Blouin of Barre Town.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Muriel Goyette.

....show , 89, formerly of Beverly Hills, FL and Barre, died peacefully Friday, June 23, 2017, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin with her family by her side.
Born October 13, 1927, to John W. Smith and Agnes (Carey) Smith in Colchester, and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1945.
She married Leo J. Gendron on November 26, 1949. While being a devoted mother and wife, she worked as a clerk at the Hollow Motel and in retail at the Homer Fitts Company and Arthur’s Department Store in Morrisville. She also managed the family business, White House Motor Court & Cabins at 285 South Main Street in Barre.
Those who had the pleasure to know Patty knew her as an intelligent, witty, confident woman and role model to all. She loved with all her heart and made it her job to take care of others in need. She enjoyed reading and spending time with friends and family. Patty loved to laugh and dance which you can see that she has passed down to her children she has left behind.
She leaves behind her son, Timothy, of Essex; seven daughters, Kathleen Chatot and husband, Phillip, of Georgia; Eileen Robinson and husband, John, of Wooster, OH; Marie Brock and husband, Tom; Margaret Fournier and husband, Norman; Joan Gendron; Ellen Greenough and husband Brad; and Jean Gosselin and husband, Gary all of Barre; daughter-in-law, Jody Buttura Gendron of Essex; her sister Maureen O’Brien of Southington, CT; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Leo J. Gendron; daughter, Maureen; son, Patrick; sisters, Teta Mack and Joan Smith; and brother Jack Smith.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre City. Interment will follow at St. Sylvester Cemetery in Websterville. There she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband.

MONTPELIER - Charles E. Gibson, Jr.
....show of Terrace Street passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Barre Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Gibson grew up in South Ryegate and attended St Johnsbury Academy before attending the University of Michigan for undergraduate and law school.
Mr. Gibson was an active lawyer in the state of Vermont for many years, serving as Attorney General. He was proud of his Scottish heritage–he enjoyed Scottish Country Dancing, helped co-found the Catamount Pipe Band, and was active in the St. Andrew’s Society of Vermont. He was also an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Barre for many years, served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Northern New England, and on the Permanent Judicial Committee of the Synod of the Northeast. He was active in the Rotary Club for over five decades.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn Gibson of Montpelier; his stepchildren Stephen Folta of Claremont, CA; Sara Folta and her husband Vincent Maganzini of Medford, MA; and Andrew Folta of San Francisco, CA. He is also survived by granddaughter Emma Maganzini and nieces Mary Truax and Lucia Burke and nephew William Gibson.
He was predeceased by his nephew David Gibson and his brother Stewart Gibson.

BARRE TOWN – Gerald R. “Gerry” Gingras
....show , 82, of Sparrow Drive passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a short illness on Monday, December 25, 2017, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
Born June 13, 1935 in Suncook, NH, he was the son of Desireé and Beatrice (Richard) Gingras. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Claremont, NH.After high school, he attended the New Hampshire School of Accounting in Manchester, NH where he received an Associate’s Degree.
After the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 he served in the U. S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged.
On October 18, 1958 he married Sylvia Turner in Goffstown, NH and settled there before moving to Barre VT in 1966 where they spent the rest of their married lives.
Gerry was employed as the Director of Systems for the State of Vermont, Department of Motor Vehicles for the majority of his career.
His memberships included the St. Monica Catholic Church, Highway Engineers Exchange Program where he served as President, Barre American Legion Post #10, Barre Lodge of Elks #1535, National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA), Vermont Soccer Officials Association (VSOA) and the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association.
Gerry enjoyed being a soccer and lacrosse referee for 50 years, officiating many games at the college level, and antiquing collecting license plates, and baseball memorabilia.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia T. Gingras of Barre Town; his son Andrew Gingras and his wife, Robin of Essex; and his daughter Michele Johnson and her husband, Richard of Barre Town; his grandchildren Ashley Morgan, Drew Gingras, Ethan Johnson, and Anna Johnson; his great grandchildren Grayson Morgan, Quinn Morgan and Florilla Johnson.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life and time of fellowship at the Canadian Club of Barre on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

BARRE – Peter “Pete” Gomez
....show , 91, a long-time resident of Barre passed away quietly at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin on Monday, November 13, 2017.
Born on October 25, 1926, he was the son of Josefa Lavin Gomez and Joaquin Gomez, both of whom were from Spain and later immigrated to Barre.
He attended schools in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1947. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was on active duty from 1945-1946.
On September 17, 1955 he married Edith Fontana. They were married for sixty-two years and lived on Leonard Street most of that time.
For forty-two years Peter was a well-known sales representative for Bailey Brothers Auto Parts in Barre. He retired from the company in 1992. He received several awards from them for top salesmanship.
Pete was a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge #35, Granite Chapter #26 RAM, Barre Council #22 R and SM, St. Aldemar Commandry #11 K.T. all of Barre and Mount Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier.
He also belonged to the Mutuo, Inc., and had been a member of the Barre Elks Lodge #1535 and the Barre Country Club where he was an avid golfer and enjoyed many hours there with his friends. In earlier years he hunted deer in Vermont. Vacations to the Maine beaches with his family were special times.
Peter is survived by his wife, Edith; daughter Jo-Ann Ornitz and her husband, Michael and his cherished granddaughter Rachel. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who live throughout the United States and who lovingly remember him as well.
He was predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters.
The service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Interment will follow the service at Hope Cemetery in Barre. Friends and family may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

NORTHFIELD FALLS - Loraine Friberg Granai
....show died March 27 surrounded by family at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law in Northfield Falls.
Loraine was born March 28, 1925 in Barre. She was the daughter of Anton and Emma (Svenson) Friberg, both immigrants from Sweden who met in Central Vermont. Loraine admired the courage it took her parents to leave their homeland so young, and she was proud of her Swedish roots. She grew up in Barre, graduated from Spaulding High School in the Class of 1943 and from Skidmore College in the Class of 1947.Loraine was married to her forever-love Cornelius O. Granai Jr. (Ki) for 68 years. He died a year before her. They met at the Lincoln School skating rink in eighth grade; they dated all through high school; she waited for him while he served in WWII; they married, had three children and lived in Burlington, Syracuse and Fort Belvoire, before moving back to Barre where they set up Ki’s medical practice. They moved to Northfield Falls to be closer to family only when their home and gardens on Abbott Avenue became too much for them to tend. Wherever they lived, Loraine made their house a home and found ways to serve the community.
Loraine was a great believer in Barre, and she worked hard for the betterment of the city. She was on the committee that pushed through the “new” Spaulding High School, as well as on the original committee for the restoration of the Opera House. She helped organize the early Heritage Festivals and wore her traditional Swedish folk dress in the parades. She ran the American Red Cross blood drawings for ten years and volunteered for many other organizations including the Aldrich Public Library and the Barre History Center. She was on several state boards, working diligently for Camp Hochelaga through the YWCA. She was a member of the Philomathians and was the longest sustaining member of the Barre Congregational Church. Her service was done with a generous heart and not for recognition, but she was grateful when she was honored with a Community Service Award.
Loraine and Ki’s door was open to everyone, but Loraine had an especially soft spot for children. When she and Ki lived across from the skating rink at Lincoln School, children would know they could always go into the Granais’ house to get warm, use the phone, and get their skate laces tightened. Children were always given the benefit of the doubt with the phrase, “They didn’t mean to.” Her dresser drawers held a not-so-secret stash of candy that she loved to have her grandchildren and great grandchildren “find.” Even her pets knew that if they could sneak their way to her they could get a treat. After her children left home, she earned a teaching certificate, working for a time as a kindergarten teacher in the basement of a church in East Montpelier as well as in a special education classroom at Lincoln School.
Loraine’s crafting hobbies included knitting and rug hooking. Everyone in the family has at least one rug that she made. She also enjoyed skiing, golfing and traveling with Ki. While all of those things brought her pleasure, her greatest joy in life came from spending time with family. She raised her children with a blend of practicality and unending love and support. Her love made each person feel special, and her smile let even strangers know that she was someone who cared. That example of love is a gift that she gave to all who knew her, and it will be greatly missed.

ORANGE - Mark Girard Groleau
....show , 54, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 13, 2017, at the VNA Respite House in Colchester. His family was at his bedside.
Born on September 9, 1962, in Barre, he was the only son of Marcel and Annette (Cotnoir) Groleau. He attended school in Barre and graduated from Champlain College in Burlington.
Mark married Christine Blodgett on October 1, 1988 and together they built a home in Orange. They had a daughter Bailey in 2000. His main focus was his family, his friends, and his love of many hobbies.
Soon after graduating, Mark joined the family business, Groleau Construction Inc. and worked alongside his father. Together they grew a reputation for high quality craftsmanship and a great attention to detail. In 1994, Mark and Christine became full owners when Marcel retired. Many around town knew him best for his honest, good-natured personality, and natural ability to talk to anyone.
In 2010, Mark was chosen as “Remodeler of the Year” by the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Northern Vermont (HBRANV). In 2012, he won an award for “Best Commercial Construction” from HBRA of Northern VT for his work completing a 10,000 square foot renovation at Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery.
Mark’s many interests included playing golf with his friend Greg Giles, playing horseshoes, and watching NASCAR with his friend LeRoy out at the fire pit on his lawn. He enjoyed camping with his family and spending time with Christine and Bailey sledding, skiing, sailing, and watching the VH1 Music Countdown every Saturday. We will always remember his love of rock music, peanuts and especially strong hugs.
Mark is survived by his wife, Christine and beloved daughter, Bailey; his father, Marcel Groleau; sisters, Colette and husband Guy Page and Lisa and husband Phillip Robtoy; nephews, Sean Parauka and his wife, Candice and Phillip’s son, Lucien Robtoy; niece, Heather Parauka; and his brother-in-law, Richard Parauka.
His mother, Annette Groleau predeceased him in 2015 and his oldest sister, RoseMarie Parauka predeceased him in 2007.
The family is grateful to Christine’s sister, Gayle Munson and to Mark’s longtime friends, LeRoy Hemond and Greg Giles for their generous gifts of time and care during Mark’s illness. Also, many fellow contractors and longtime friends of Mark (Bob Pomer, Tim Busby, Paul Lamberti, and Scott Hutchins, for example) were a great source of personal and professional help during this difficult time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19. There will be no calling hours.

BARRE – Lorraine Lawrence Halvosa
....show , 99, a long-time resident of Farwell Street and more recently of the Fortier Home on Bailey Street, died Monday, June 5, 2017, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
Born March 8, 1918 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Gladys (Carroll) Lawrence, and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier in 1936.
Following graduation, she worked at the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Montpelier for several years.
On March 3, 1962, Lorraine married Glenn Halvosa in Montpelier, moving to Barre in October of 1962. In May 1964 she and Glenn opened the Red Clover Gift Shop on Main Street in Barre. Following Glenn’s death in June of 1970, Lorraine continued the gift shop until 1980.
Her memberships included St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre, the Central Vermont Hospital Auxiliary, the Passport Club as well as volunteer service with the Central Vermont Hospital, the Aldrich Public Library and the Vermont State House Gift Shop.
Survivors include numerous cousins.
Besides her parents, and her husband Glenn, Lorraine was predeceased by her only sibling Robert Lawrence who died in 1974.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery in Barre. There are no calling hours

MONTPELIER - Stacey Hanchett
....show , 56, of Barre Street died peacefully at UVM Medical Center on December 30, 2017 after a brief illness.
Born on April 3, 1961, in St. Johnsbury, VT, he was the son of Philip and Marian (Morris) Hanchett. Stacey graduated from Montpelier High School in 1980. After graduation he began working at the State of Vermont Department of Liquor Control in Montpelier.
Stacey enjoyed running and was an avid race fan attending races weekly at Thunder Road, he also enjoyed bowling, hiking and other outdoor activities.
Survivors include his mother, Marian (Morris) Hanchett of Barre; his brothers Steve Hanchett of Sarasota, FL; Terry Hanchett also of Sarasota, FL; and Thomas Hanchett and his wife, Lori (Mattson) along with their children Bryton and Kirsten Hanchett of Contoocook, NH.
He is preceded by his father Philip Hanchett.

EAST BARRE - Alan Armand Hebert
....show , 61, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. He was pronounced upon arrival to CVMC.
He leaves his wife, Maryann Dexter Hebert of East Barre and three children: Brandy Plowman and her husband Michael, Bridgette Hutchinson and her husband David, Brandon Hebert and his wife Krystle and a special mention to Robert Quinlan who was as close as a son to Alan and his family Reta and Brooklynn.His 11 grandchildren: Hunter, Gavin, Meliah, Liam, Dylan, Parker, Garrison, Nathan, Mackenzie, Caleb and Avery. His four siblings Vicki and her husband Peter Bresset, Steven and wife Beverly Hebert, Terry and wife Lorena Hebert, and Armand and wife Coni Hebert. Also survived by his mother in-law Margie Dexter, his brothers-in-law, Donald and wife Maggie Dexter, and Douglas Dexter and partner Sue Jones. Alan also left many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Alan was born on October 22, 1955 and after extensive travel was raised in Barre. He was the son of Charles and Barbara Hebert.
He served in the U.S. Army and Vermont Army National Guard as a career soldier for 33 years and retired as a Sargent Major in 2007. After retirement he worked as a financial office employee at the VA hospital in White River Jct.
Alan met his wife Maryann when they were in graded school and have been together ever since.They have been happily married for the past 42 years and had three children that remain a very close family.
He loved camping, hiking, woodworking, teaching survival skills to the kids and spending time with his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 11am to 2pm at the Barre Elks Club. All who wish to attend are welcome.

BARRE - Lucille Clara Dodge Campbell Hoyt
....show passed away peacefully at the age of 82 with her family around her on January 29, 2017.
Born in Randolph on August 28, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Carrol Dodge and Gertrude (Larkin) Dodge Roberts. She grew up in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School in June 1951, at the age of 16. She was the valedictorian of her class. While in school, she enjoyed her studies, playing the piano, one-act plays and excelled in basketball, scoring 40 points in one game against Plainfield. After graduation she worked at National Life Insurance Co.
In 1954 she married John “Buddy” Campbell. They lived in Graniteville and Barre where she spent her time taking care of their three children. Buddy died of heart failure in 1961. She had various jobs until 1967, when she went to work for the South Barre Granite Co. as bookkeeper. The business closed in 1982 and she felt very fortunate to start work at Anderson-Friberg Co., retiring there in 1995 to spend time with her husband.
In 1962 she met Arthur “Tim” Hoyt. They later married and were together over 50 years. They enjoyed sports, especially Little League Baseball and later the Barre Men’s Softball Team. They also spent many winters in Bradenton, FL, where they made many new friends.
Lucille enjoyed music, knitting, ceramics, word puzzles, the Maine Coast and going out to eat. She also liked family picnics and parties, being around her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Post #790 and the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #10 of Barre. She was a past member of the Graniteville Presbyterian Church and the Barre Congregational Church.
Lucille is loved and mourned by her children, sons, Alexander (Diane) Campbell and Charles Campbell; daughters, Kathryn (Tom) McKenna, Carolyn (William) Ix, Kelly Hoyt, and step-daughter, Dawn (Paul) LaCroix; her grandchildren, Melissa Campbell, Johnny Campbell and Andrew McKenna, Billy and Tim Ix, Joey and Jessie Taplin and step-grandchildren, Brian and Kerri O’Connor, Jason and Jimmy LaCroix; her one remarkable great-grandson, Jacson Campbell, as well as step great-grandchildren: Addison, Gavin and Avery O’Connor, Meghan and Jake Couture and Lily and Evelyn LaCroix; her brother, Gary (Patti) Dodge of Rochester, NY; her half-brother, Dwayne (Donna) Roberts of Mesa, AZ; and her brother-in-law, Tony (Gail) Campbell of Barre, VT.
Lucille was predeceased by her parents, her brother Neal and his wife, Kathy, also by several of her Campbell in-laws their spouses, her aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at noon in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church Street, Barre, VT by the Reverend Dr. David Vanderlinde Abernathy.

BARRE – Ronald Armand Huard, Sr.
....show , 77, of Long Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.
Born February 7, 1940 in Randolph, he was the son of Romeo and Dorothy (Atkins) Huard. Ron attended Williamstown Elementary and High Schools.
On June 17, 1962, Ron married the love of his life, Jean Margaret Farnham in Barre. They made their home mostly in Vermont. She died on December 24, 2009. On February 7, 2011, he married Nancy Clough in Barre and she survives him.
For many years, Ron was employed in residential housing property management in Vermont, as well as in other states. Later, he became a machine operator at Progressive Plastics in Williamstown. In his spare time, Ron enjoyed fishing and tinkering around the house.
Survivors include his children, Jill Douglas of Springfield, MA; Jackie Sloan and her husband, David of Illinois; Jean Smith and her husband, Gary of Northfield Falls; Jennifer Parry and her husband, Jason of Graniteville; Ronald Huard, III of Graniteville; and Mitchell Huard of Barre; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and his son, Ronald Huard, Jr.

MARSHFIELD – Garnet Martha Jameson
....show , 103, of Hollister Hill Road died Monday, August 28, 2017 at home with her daughter at her bedside.
Born June 30, 1914 in Coral, Michigan, she was the daughter of John and Golda (Webb) VanGundy. Garnet moved from Ohio to New Mexico in 1918 with her parents and 3 brothers due to the ill health of her mother. Her father was a Methodist minister.
Garnet graduated from Clayton High School in Clayton, New Mexico in June of 1933.
In December 1933, she married Del W. Jameson in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After their marriage, they lived in Corona, Albuquerque, Farmington, Las Cruces and Santa Fe all in New Mexico. Del died in 1968.
Garnet was a homemaker, although after Del’s death, she became a trained microfilm technician, both by photographic preparation and via computer scanning. She was first employed as a microfilm technician at the NM Title Company in Albuquerque.In 1979, she moved to Virginia to join her daughter and was employed as a microfilm technician by Real Title Company in Fairfax, VA, retiring in 1994 at the age of 80. She and her daughter, Anne moved to Marshfield in 2004.
Garnet studied piano in her childhood and became a very accomplished pianist. She always loved her gardens, especially those of roses and lilies and also enjoyed reading, music, sewing and embroidery.
Survivors include her daughter Anne Jameson of Marshfield and her grandson Eric Slesinger of Alexandria, VA.
In addition to her parents and her husband Del, she was predeceased by her brothers Gerald, Carl, and Delmar.

BARRE CITY - June Mary Jorgensen
....show , 86, of North Main Street passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Barre Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Barre City.
She was born on August 9, 1932 in Burlington, Vermont.June grew up and attended school in Groton, Vermont, high school class of 1949, where she received two All State awards for basketball. On October 24, 1952, she married Herbert Jorgensen at the Groton United Methodist Church. Following their marriage, they have since resided in Barre.
In her younger years, she worked at Sprague Electric and as a bookkeeper for Barre Sign Company. She enjoyed antique collecting and refinishing and could often be found rummaging around dusty attics and barns.She spent time with her family at their camp on Lake Elmore during the summer and after retirement, winters in Naples, Florida.
She is survived by her husband Herbert Jorgensen, daughter Susan Jorgensen, sisters Carol Blanchard and Signa Braman, and brother David Dickey.June was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Everett Dickey; daughter Lesley Jorgensen; sisters Beverly Frost and Dixie Dickey, and brothers George Dickey and Reginald Morse.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 10:00 am at Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre. Inurnment will follow in the Hope Cemetery in Barre City. There are no calling hours.
