Winona Orvis Yasko
....show died March 23, 2017 at the Bel-Aire Center in Newport, Vermont at the age of 93.
She was predeceased by her parents, older sister Lovina Orvis Baslow, and husband, Michael A. Yasko, in 2001, whom she married on October 10, 1942 in Bristol, VT. Survivors are daughters Michele Young and her life partner Karl L. Mol of Huntington, WV, Carolyn Marie Schwebel and her spouse John of Leonardo, NJ and younger sister Patricia Orvis of Brooklyn, NY.
She was born in Cornwall, VT on August 7, 1923 to Ralph F. Orvis and Agnes Wright Orvis. She spent her teenage years in the Jerusalem and Bristol areas.
During their nearly 60-year marriage, Winona and Michael lived in a number of locations in Vermont, including St. Johnsbury, Barton, Bristol, and Bellows Falls. In their later years they and their Dalmatian, ,Daisy, became "snowbirds" at their winter home in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Winona was very active in community, school, including PTA president and class mother, and political affairs all of her life. Winona was an advocate for children and the elderly in Vermont and the Greater New England areas. She advocated for her disabled daughter. When a librarian would only allow her daughters to use books from the Children's Room, Winona, who loved reading as did her daughters, made it very clear that her children could read ANY book they wanted to..(And they did, taking out the maximum five books at a time.)
A dark-haired beauty with brilliant blue eyes, Winona was an impassioned, independent woman from her early years. When she let it be known that her first votes would be given to Democratic, not Republican, candidates, her parents refused to give her a ride to town. She persisted and had to walk a long way down through the woods to cast her ballots.
Winona was above all a mother, who taught her daughters how to make her wonderful baked goods, including chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, banana bread, and apple pies. She helped the daughters learn to sew, and made matching mother-daughter blue taffeta dresses, small pieces of which her now senior citizen daughters still treasure.
Winona loved the many family cats and dogs and always allowed and encouraged their presence.
She had many jobs, including seamstress at a Van Raalte factory where she was not always appreciated because of her speed that forced others on the line to keep up. She was a secretary for Gov. Lee Emerson, cashier at the Barton A&P, and sold Avon products, often coming home from walking to make deliveries with freezing legs. She later served as a school nurse at a correctional school for teens and at the high school in Bristol.
Winona often challenged what she saw as injustices in her workplace and other situations, a dominant trait that she instilled in her children.
After her "girls" were in high school, she returned to nurses' training, which she had had to leave after her marriage to Michael Yasko, a tall, dark and handsome soldier from Pennsylvania whom she had met in a soda fountain in Burlington VT.
Her professional education included an R.N. from the Medical Center Hospital School of Nursing and a B.S.N. from University of Vermont, with a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. (P.N.P.) from Northeastern University in Boston MA. She also trained at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia PA, where younger fellow students saw her as a big sister.
Winona's main pride involved her nursing identity. On family drives it was not unusual when an accident was seen for her to attempt to help, crying "I'm a nurse, I'm a nurse!"
An avid swimmer, for several years she ran the food concession at Crystal Lake State Beach, providing a lovely summer of swimming and selling experience for her daughters at young ages.
Winona Orvis Yasko was a force of nature. You may have seen her driving quickly around a corner on the wrong side of a curvy road. She could be loving or resentful, as a "middle child," saying, "I get the neck of the chicken!"
To quote from another obituary, "She could simultaneously be ornery and have a mischievous twinkle in her eye. Her family is so sad to lose her. She made them smile and laugh. She infuriated them. She inspired them. She made them crazy. She loved them, and they loved her."
She chose to donate her body to a medical school for instruction of medical students.
Her remains will then be cremated and spread over Crystal Lake in Barton VT, the site of her summer home for many years.
She requested no flowers, but donations in her name to organizations of your choice, especially those that support pets, would be appreciated.

Rock N Desroches
....show , 67 passed away in Winter Haven, FL on March 8, 2017. He was born December 18, 1949 in Granby Quebec, Canada to Raymond and Cecile Desroches.
In 1957 the family moved to North Troy, Vermont. In 1973, Rock married the late Suzanne Quirion who predeceased him in 1998. They had two children together, Alan and Nicole. In the Spring of 2002, Rock was Naturalized and was proud of becoming a US Citizen. In 2003, Rock married Judy Judd Royer who survives him, and Judy’s daughter Jessica; who Rock treated like his own daughter.
Rocky was a man of many talents. Whether it was working on vehicles, snow machines, tractors, chainsaws, building homes, cutting trees, planting gardens, landscaping, he would give it a try. He would try to do any kinds of repairs himself before calling in a professional. Most of the time it worked out for him! If anyone had a project going on, Rocky would show up out of the blue, with his signature “C-gar” in his mouth, ready to lend a hand for the day. Whenever Rocky was around people knew it. Despite his illness, Rocky always was able to make others laugh and always had a big smile on his face along with his big bushy moustache.
Rock started as a farmer, then to a carpenter. Then spent most of his working career as a truck driver. First doing long haul for Burkewitz Transport, then local driving for Barrup Farms.
Upon retirement, Rocky and Judy started spending winters in Florida and summers in Vermont. They loved traveling between the two states. Even though Rocky was retired, he just could not get the truck driver out of him. He usually made the trip in just 2 days, instead of taking his time to enjoy the scenery, which drove his family crazy. Rocky would just laugh and in return made us laugh too.
Rocky is survived by his son Alan and his wife Lisa, and their three children Nathaniel and Natashia Brooks, and Julia Desroches. His daughter Nicole Brewer and her husband Jim and their three children Benjamin, Levi, and Alexis. His stepdaughter Jessica Farrar and her husband Jared and their two children Kadin and Kiley. He is also survived by his sisters Raymonde Mayhew, and Jocelyne and her husband Terry Gage. He is survived by many wonderful brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, and three brothers: infant Jacques, Gilles, Jean-Pierre Desroches, and several in-laws he always cherished.
A Catholic burial and celebration of his life will be determined at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his memory to the Ron Holland Dialysis Center at North Country Hospital, Newport, VT.
Interment will take place at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cemetery in Orleans, VT.
Dorothy V. Monfette
....show , 90, passed away in Newport on March 7th 2017 surrounded by her family. Mom was born in Newport on January 12, 1927 to William and Elizabeth Curtis (Laplante). The family lived in St. Johnsbury for a time before moving back to Newport and settling on Orchard Street where she grew up. A child of the great depression, her young life was difficult at times. Mom never dwelled on that part of her childhood. She told stories of winter days sledding on the hill below Bogner’s and in summer picking berries there. When our Mom was 14 years old a family moved into town and she met and fell in love with our dad, Paul Monfette. They married on August 9, 1942. The following year they welcomed their first child into the world and soon after Dad was drafted and off to war. He was gone for more than two years and Mom carried on raising her baby and living on rations. When Dad returned it took a few years but they were able to build a home of their own on Hill Street in Newport. They had four more daughters and lived in that house for the rest of their lives. Dad passed away last April after 74 years of marriage. Mom had a few different jobs over her lifetime but her children and home were her passions. We spent many a night in bed falling asleep to the sound of her at the sewing machine making us new school clothes. It was Mom that made sure we went on a vacation every year, singing in the car on our way to our adventure. Our mother’s energy knew no bounds. She turned an old cow pasture into a yard where all the kids in the neighborhood came to play baseball or go down the slippery slide. Once we grew older Mom reclaimed that yard and turned it into one of the prettiest in the city. Her flowerbeds are a true labor of love. Full of perennials that will keep her memory alive. Over the years Mom worked mostly as a nurse’s aide but also made custom cakes at our home. She would make giant wedding cakes and every surface in the house would be covered with little sugar flowers she had made and left drying on waxed paper. Her homemade candy was the best around. After we girls were out on our own Mom began volunteering. Her work as an advocate for the poor, and the victims of domestic violence have had a lasting impact on the community. She worked on countless toy drives and collected every year for the American Cancer Society. Mom’s work as a Hospice volunteer brought comfort to so many families through the years. She gave her time and energy freely and with love and great compassion for others. Our Mom, Dorothy is survived by us, her five naughty daughters and three sons in-law who were her sons. Shelia & Alan Sisco, Paulette & Alvin Simard, Sue & Maury Tinker, Jackie Monfette, and Tammi Monfette. She leaves her grandchildren, Larry Maxwell, Jennifer Simard, Joseph Simard, Jeffrey Markum, Barry Shelton, Sarah Soskin, Emily Soskin, and Jonah Monfette. Her great grandchildren, Amanda, Christopher, Nicholas, A.J., Lexi, Dylan, Ava, Austin, Kaya, Kingston, Elsie, Isabelle, Alyssa, Jackson and one on the way. She had one great great grandchild Ivey and is survived by two sister’s in-law Blanche Monfette and Marilyn Curtis. Mom was predeceased by her husband Paul, her siblings Vivian Hamlin, Shirley Miller, Alice Hackett, Gladys (Red)Theberge, and William Curtis. She was also predeceased by her beloved granddaughter Jackie Simard.

He loved meandering along a back road never worrying about the destination but rather enjoying the journey. Those who knew him also knew how straight forward and practical he was. I was born to John Anderson Camber and Bernice Moulton on November 1, 1924. That is All Saints Day. No wonder I was a little angel. I lived in Newport on the eastside thru graded school and one year of High School. My father retired from the railroad in “38”. The next year they bought a little farm on the Beebe Road and did my three years in Derby Academy in 1942 (Wow). At least I got my diploma. I worked with my dad doing carpentry work then went to Bray Wood Heel in Orleans till it burned. Then I worked for the Railway Express till after the war ended. I then worked for H. P. Hood and Sons till 1970 this included driving milk tankers straight and semi for Gaston Poulin and Paul Burkewitz.
I married Adeline Leona Scott daughter of John Scott and Ruby Flora Hyland Scott on Sept 15, 1951. This was the year Paul Ernest Sykes was born in Boston, MA. We adopted Paul in 1971.
In 1970 Adeline and I bought Dick’s Drive In in Derby on the Derby Line road. Sold it Feb of 1980 after Adeline died. After selling the diner I had a Burlington Free Press paper route thru Island Pond. Before giving up it up I went to work for the Mulkin Corp that lasted 22 years, until I finally retire May 2004.

The Village of Derby Line has lost its unofficial mayor, and the world has lost a great community spirit. Joseph “Joe” Queenin
....show , passed away in Newport on January 25 at 93 years old. His family, who he cherished, were there with him, comforting as he passed over to the other side.
Joe is survived by his beloved son, John, and his wife Penny, two grandsons Joseph J. and Bob J. Queenin both of Derby Line. He was predeceased by great-grandchild Caidence Queenin in June 2010.
Born on June 1, 1923 to Francis and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Queenin, Joe grew up in Worburn, Massachusetts with the blood of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins running through his veins. He was a diehard fan of the teams until his passing, and without a doubt he has now reconnected with his wife Bev, his wife of 65 years, in Heaven and they are in search of some of the Boston greats who passed before them.
A child of the Great Depression, Joe had a far from perfect childhood. As a teenager he was orphaned, but his only sibling, Hugh, nine years his senior, stepped in for their parents. In February 1941, Hugh, then a reserve Army officer, joined the U.S. Border Patrol and was assigned to the Derby Line Border Station. The two brothers settled in Derby Line in February. Joe attended his junior year at Derby Academy, but come his senior year he transferred to Newport High School, a school, which unlike Derby Academy, had a football team which he joined. He graduated from Newport High in 1942.
As with most people of Joe’s generation, Joe remembered exactly where he was when he heard the news that Japanese Forces had bombed the Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which launched the United States into an already raging World War II. He was standing on Newport’s Main Street in front of what was then the Royal Restaurant. Angered by the attack, Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduation. He was followed into full-time military by Hugh, who served as an officer. Following basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, Joe shipped out to the Pacific. He saw action on the island of Bougainville, followed by some of the bloodiest fighting of the war on the island of Okinawa.
Upon discharge from the military in December 1945, he returned to Derby Line and reconnected with a young woman he met in Derby Line before the war, a woman he corresponded with during the war years. Her name was Beverly Piatti. On May 24, 1946, Beverly became Beverly Queenin. They shared 65 years of marriage before Beverly’s passing on September 19, 2011. The love of his family, friends, and neighbors helped him survive the loss, but he never stopped missing Bev, the love of his life. He credited Bev for making him the man he was. For a time, the couple owned a newsstand in Derby Line. Joe went on to retire from the U.S. Post Office in 1984.
Joe had a lifelong love of sports, a love he brought to Vermont. For many years he was a well-known baseball and basketball coach. He also served as a basketball referee. Bev was also fanatical when it came to her sports. The couple passed on their love of sports onto their son John, and their grandsons Joe and Bob. Joe also volunteered for the North Country Union High School Hockey Teams, including manning the penalty box during home games. He also spearheaded the Toys for Kids program in Orleans County, a program which helped provide underprivileged children with gifts for Christmas. In addition, he volunteered at North Country Hospital for many years. His good works were not overlooked. He was honored several times, including in 2013, being named Northeast Kingdom Senior of the Year by the Area Agency on Aging. Joe was also named WCAX’s Super Senior in 2014. In addition, he was a frequent guest on the Vermont Voice radio show, and the Northeast Kingdom Voice television show.
Proud of his military service, Joe was a frequent guest in area schools, sharing his memories of World War II, not to brag, but in hopes that the students would not only learn about WW II, but also understand the horrors of war. In 2012, he traveled to California to celebrate the 237th birthday of the Marine Corps, staying aboard the Queen Mary. Then in 2014 he went on a dream trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.
He was active until the very end, always concerned for others before himself.
Friends may call on Thursday February 2, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until Noon and from 7-9 P.M. at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday February 3, 2017 with Rev. John W. Badger, Sr
....show , 84, of Westmore, VT, died on January 14th, 2017 at Maple Lane Nursing Home in the loving arms of family members. His passing followed several years of declining health at home under the loving care of his devoted wife, Irene (Austin) Badger.
John was born in Framingham, MA, the second son of Joseph and Nellie (Ripley) Badger. Sadly, John’s mother died when he was a toddler. The badger boys became “Wards of the State” and were placed in foster homes, but with twice-weekly contact with their father until his death when John was fourteen. Two of John’s foster families loved him dearly and considered him their own- the Holmes and Willard families. Marian Willard came to serve as the “mom” he so desperately wanted and ties with the ensuring generations remain strong to this day.
John attended the Farm and Trades School on Thompson’s Island, Boston, MA, and was an enthusiastic participant in many of the sports programs offered the school. His academic grades were passing, but the “A’s” were in conduct, effort, and athletics. Thus began a life long involvement with sports…as a player, a die hard fan, a coach, a ref, a mentor and supporter.
John left school to join the Navy where he proudly served during the Korean War (1951-1955). During these years, John and his first wife became proud parents of the first child when a daughter came in the world Badger-Style at Chelsea Naval Hospital during hurricane Carol!
After the Navy, John was employed at Texas Instruments for several years. In 1966, John and his wife moved their young family of five children to Canaan, VT to begin a successful venture as dairy farmers. In the early seventies, they sold the farm, but remained in Canaan. During this time, John was divorced and began employment as a janitor/ maintenance man at the Canaan schools that his children attended. He continued to coach and ref and was a staunch supporter of his own children’s athletic endeavors including his youngest daughter’s prowess in gymnastics.. a new sport for the Badger family! John was just as passionate about the children’s academic successes and was so proud that all five went on to acquiring degrees in their chosen fields.
In 1979, John left Canaan, VT and moved to Orleans, VT and then to Westmore, VT with his wife, Irene. He worked one year at Butterfield’s, then worked as custodian at Barton Academy and graded school until his retirement in 1994. Before and after retirement, John always had many jobs on the side such as window washing and floor refurnishing for area schools and businesses, employment by the town of Westmore as dump/ transfer station attendant, caretaker for several Willoughby lake properties, and the list could go on. In any endeavor, no matter how menial, John took each responsibility very seriously.
However, John played as hard as he worked. In later years, he played the small local golf courses, enjoyed kayaking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, tobogganing with our neighbors. He was always a hunter and fisherman and over the years had skidoos, and a motorcycle and boats. On the quieter side, John enjoyed camping, especially at the state parks and Cathedral Pines Campground in Eustis, ME. He organized 4th of July camping events for family and friends at our Westmore property for several years. John was an avid cribbage player and enjoyed chess and other strategy games. He liked “easy listening” music, Katherine Hepburn movies, and in recent years found classical music very soothing. His greatest joy was time spent with family and friends and at the sports events, music recitals, and milestones of his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Irene (Austin) Badger; his five children; Deborah Badger, John W. Badger, Jr, Dianne Badger, Stephen Badger and Jacqueline Powers. His grandchildren, John W. Badger, III, Megan, Jared, Jeffrey, Jonathan Badger, and Samantha Powers, and his great grandson, Owen. His ex wife and mother of his children, Mildred Badger, his brothers and sister-in-law; Alice Badger; Eugene and Anita Austin; George and Gail Ruggles; David and Carol Brisson. Several nieces and nephews, cousins and very close friends of all ages. Also grieving his loss is his much loved dog, Lucky Lady.
John was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Joe. Also, by his foster parents and several foster siblings including a very special sister, Ruth.
A memorial service was held on January 17th, 2017 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Elm Street in Barton.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Suite 128, Williston, VT 05495, or to the Barton and/ or Orleans American Legions, or to a charity of your choice would greatly be appreciated.

Winston would have preferred that we start this with one of his bad jokes. He loved making the people around him laugh, even if it ended with a shocked "Oh Winston."
Winston Eddy Dowland
....show , 74, of Holland, VT. passed from this earth on January 2, 2016. He was one of those people that loved family and country, and the legacy of his love and service is long and impressive.
Born on June 20, 1942 in Derby Line to Bernard and Gertrude (Sanborn) Dowland, he was one of 7 children.
In 1958, he joined the Navy and began his lifelong service to, and pride in, this great country. Winston served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, on the ship enforcing the missile blockage. He did five tours in Vietnam, and served on the submarine base in Pearl Harbor. In 1878, he retired from the Navy, with an Honorable Discharge as a Petty Chief Officer, having been awarded many medals for his service. He entered the reserves for another 10 years, for a total of 30 years service in the Navy.
In his civilian life he worked for several different companies, and opened his own successful welding business, where he created and sold the pattern for his dumpster and quad track designs. However, he never stopped serving his country, his state, or his town.
He was a member of the VFW Post #798, the Newport Elks #2155, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #22 where he was instrumental in getting the transportation vans for local veterans needing rides to the VA hospital in White River. He also served the DAV as Commander, Chaplin, Treasurer, Adjutant, and Service Officer. His volunteerism spanned over 20 years. He also served with the Enlisted Association, and the State Department of the VT. DA, serving as Commander, and then, as Treasurer.
He served his great state of Vermont as a State Representative from 2004-2006, and he served his hometown of Holland on the Select Board for many years.
But for all of the service he gave his country, state, and town, it was his family that gave him the most enjoyment. He married his loving wife, Heather (Dawber) in 1992, and for over 24 years spent every day together, working, serving, and spending time with family.
Winston loved taking his nieces and nephews on trips around the United States, and because he loved history, they learned history. He loved big family get togethers with lots of laughter, and children running around. In the past few years he enjoyed helping to care for his great nieces and nephews, Kennedy Atwood, and Madison, Anora, and Theodore Montminy. He and Madison had a special relationship, and she loved spending time at "Unky’s" house.
Winston enjoyed raising his beef cattle. He enjoyed talking Nascar with Lenny and Brian, and was a big Dale Jarrett fan. He was a history buff, but kept current on new technologies through various periodicals. He enjoyed his daily paper, and talking politics with anyone who would listen. He enjoyed telling those politically incorrect jokes, and getting a reaction. He loved seeing the snow on the trees after a storm. He lived with integrity, and a fierce respect for this country, and he had a huge heart for those he loved. Winston was one of the good guys, and he leaves behind a huge family and a multitude of friends that know it, and will miss him.
He is survived by his wife, Heather Dowland of Holland, Vt., by his children Lisa King, and her husband Lenny, Lori Groleau and her husband Pierre, and David Dowland and his wife Lara, by his grandchildren, Melissa King, Daniel and Patrick Groleau, and Quinn Dowland, by his brothers and sisters Vickie Tear, George Dowland, Philip Dowland and his wife Rosie, Eddie Dowland, and his wife Doreen, and Rocky Dowland, by his brother and sister in laws, Sherry and Brian Montminy, and Stacy and Wade Wright, and very special nieces and nephews Brian and Christie Montminy, Ashley Montminy and Justin St. Pierre, Addie and Tanner Atwood, and Wade and Amber Wright, Scott Dowland, and many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his great nieces and great nephew, which held such a special spot in his heart, Kenny Atwood, Madison, Anora and Theodore Montminy.
He was predeased by his sister Louise Simino and her husband Rollin, brother Bernie Dowland, and brother in law Brian Tear.
We bet Winston would love us to end with one of his jokes too, but we are sure you can remember one of he told you. Even more, we are sure those who knew and loved him know how he impacted our lives, and want to honor him through our own service to others.
