JERICHO - Fred Sourdiff, born in Burlington, Oct. 3, 1943, age 66, died on Aug. 26, 2010 at home surrounded by loving family and friends after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Fred graduated from Burlington High School, for many years worked in his family's business, among many other ventures though his life. Fred retired in 2008. Fred loved spending time with his family and friends, cooking and entertaining. He always made people around him laugh. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Fred was predeceased by his Aunt Velma and Edward Kilmer; mother, Nina Turnbaugh; father, Melvin Sourdiff; brother, Wayne Sourdiff; sister, Joan Francis. Fred is survived by his wife Debora Sourdiff; sisters, Debi and Pat Alapa, Kathy and Joe Gogeun, Lynda Sourdiff; his uncle, Paul Sourdiff; his children, Kelly and husband Mike Lane, Kent Sourdiff, Kullen Sourdiff, Collin Sourdiff and fiancé Erin; stepchildren, Adam Bister, and Tracie Kernen; 11 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. The family would like to thank Jeff Bouffard and everyone at AstenJohnson for all of their caring and support during this difficult time. Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception at 10 a.m. There will be no calling hours. WALDEN - Tristan Howard Altman Southworth, 21, died on Aug. 22, 2010 as a result of injuries sustained in a battle in Afghanistan. Tristan was born on Oct. 19, 1988 in Denville, N.J. He moved to Walden in Aug. of 1990 with his mom. He went to Walden Elementary School and graduated from Hazen Union H.S. in 2007. He played soccer, basketball, and baseball throughout high school. He joined the Vermont Army National Guard during his junior year. Upon graduation, he spent one year at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2009, he was activated for deployment to Afghanistan. Tristan enjoyed all aspects of life. He loved to be around family and friends. He was always willing to help anyone in need. He loved children and German Shepherds. He had a special love for the game of baseball and a strong need to serve his country. Tristan is survived by his mom and dad, Julie and Michael Southworth; brothers, Matt and Robert Southworth; grandparents, Zollie and Maren Altman of South Wheelock and Keith and Kathleen Southworth of West Pawlet; aunts, uncles and cousins, who held a special place in his heart; and he also leaves behind his "Brothers," still deployed in Afghanistan. Tristan's family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hardwick Hazen Union High School gym. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Hardwick Hazen Union High School gym. SOUTH BURLINGTON/RICHMOND - Sylvia E. Spear, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Green Mountain Nursing Home. She was born in Yonkers, N.Y. on June 14,1923, the daughter of Charles Wilbur and Maude (Clute) Spear. Sylvia lived most of her life at 434 Shelburne Road, South Burlington, and attended a one-room schoolhouse farther down Shelburne Road, then Edmunds Elementary School and Burlington High School, graduating in 1941. She owned and operated the Tom Thumb Nursery School at 8 White Place, South Burlington, and moved to Dugway Road in Richmond, when her brother, Calvin returned to Vermont in 1989. Sylvia enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking and volunteered for many years at the Birds of Vermont Museum and as a hostess for weddings at the Old Round Church in Richmond. The family would like to thank the personnel at Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester for the loving care they provided for the last years of her life. Sylvia is survived by her nieces and nephews, Kathleen Mary Spear, Calvin Jack Spear, Mark Charles Spear, Brian Klain Spear and great-nephews, Christopher Spear and wife Jennifer, Kevin and Michael Spear. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington in the Spear family plot. ADDISON - Surrounded by loving family, Marion Wood Spencer, 94, died peacefully on Friday, April 16, 2010, at her home in Addison, where she lived for the past 70 years. She was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Perth Amboy, N.J., the daughter of Christina (Jeffrey) Wood and William Wood. She attended Perth Amboy High School, where she graduated as class valedictorian at the age of 16. She received her RN degree in 1936, from Muhlenburg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield, N.J. In 1940, she married Herrick B. Spencer, a dairy farmer, and moved to Addison, where together, they ran the family farm and raised four children. During this time, she also helped raise nieces and nephews who moved into her home after losing their mother. She was a member of the Grandview Grange and worked part-time as a nurse at Porter Hospital in Middlebury. Marion loved her community and the state of Vermont, and served both in various capacities. She was a founding board member of the Counseling Service of Addison County, and was founding president of the Addison Central School P.T.O. She served on the Addison School Board and was instrumental in beginning the school lunch program there. In 1974, she was elected to the Vermont Legislature and served from 1975-1982 on the Education and Judiciary Committees. After her legislative career, she was appointed to the Vermont District Environmental Commission, where she served passionately, working to move progress forward while carefully preserving Vermont's heritage. She returned to Addison town politics and was elected a justice of the peace and the first female member of the Addison Town Select Board. She served on many nonprofit boards, including Elderly Services of Addison County and Addison County Court Diversion.

SHELBURNE / MIDDLEBURY - Rosanna C. (Petit) St. Aubin, 96, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehab in Middlebury. Born in Hillsgrove, R.I. Oct. 15, 1913, the youngest of nine children. She was the daughter of Francis and Delia (Jalbert) Petit. She married Alfred St. Aubin in 1938 in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Hillsgrove R.I. Her Catholic religion was very important to her and gave her strength during difficult times in her life. Rosanna was a resident of Troy, N.Y. for 41 years where she was a parishioner of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church. She was the proud mother of two daughters, Patricia and Joan. She was a homemaker, until her daughters were to start high school; she then went to work to ensure them a Catholic high school education. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Shelburne to live with her daughter Patricia, with whom she resided for 19 years. While in Shelburne she was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena parish. Rosanna was predeceased by all of her siblings: Ernest, Eli, Joseph, Theodore, Albert, Henry, Lena and Marion. Her husband Alfred, her daughter, Joan Mahoney, her sons-in-law Donald Walsh and Col. Norman Brochu (Ret.) She is survived by her daughter, Patricia WalshBrochu of Shelburne; granddaughter Nicole Walsh and husband Rupert Ho of Essex; great-grandson Donovan Robert Walsh Ho; granddaughter Laura Mahoney and partner Richard Hoffay of Averill Park, N.Y.; great-grandson Devin Ezra Hoffay; son-in-law Thomas Mahoney of Wynantskill, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews, special caregiver and friend Letitia Chiaravalle of Burlington and her N.Y. Dr. Mohamed Ismail, his wife and family with whom she enjoyed a cherished friendship of 35 years. Rosanna had fond memories of a simpler life. As a child she loved walking in the woods near her family home, picking wild flowers and blueberries with her pet pig, and swimming it Petit's Pond. She had a vivid memory of Charles Lindberg landing at her hometown airport. She was always there to lend a hand to those less fortunate. Her family and friends were so important to her. She had a great sense of humor and sharp wit well into her 90's. She loved animals, especially her beloved English Bulldog Peggy, Collies, Lassie and Prince, and later her adopted Goldens, Jackie and Calvin. She loved the ocean, and enjoyed being at the beach well into her 80's. She was an avid gardener and always said it brought her joy and peace. Her beautiful gardens gave enjoyment to all. Her other pastime was her exquisite embroidery which she lovingly gave as gifts to family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in Shelburne Village Cemetery in the Spring. , 53, died on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 in Fletcher Allen Health Care of Burlington, surrounded by her loving family. Anne was born in Lawrence, Mass. on Dec. 2, 1956, the daughter of Louis and Helen (Kelleher) Breen. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Lawrence, Mass. in 1974 and attended Northern Essex Community College. She married Larry Stanton on Nov. 9, 1991. Larry predeceased her on Oct. 4, 1996. Anne had worked at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as a Customer Training Manager for over 15 years. She is survived by her sons, Donald LaFleur and wife, Alexis, of St. Albans and Tim LaFleur of Milton. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Jane Valentine and husband, William, of Lawrence, Mass., David Breen and wife, Constance, of No. Andover, Mass., Louis "Luke" Breen, Jr. and wife, Christine, of Londonderry, N.H., Daniel Breen and partner, Jim Burnett, of Weybridge; and her nieces and nephews, Sean, Katie, David, Steve and Mary Kate Breen and Josh Brunett-Breen. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 in the United Church of Milton at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery.

NORTH TROY - Long time businessman and lifetime resident of North Troy, Urban R. Starr Sr., 90 years young, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, surrounded by his loving family and special family members at his home in North Troy. He was born on Sept. 10, 1920 in North Troy, son of George Edward Starr and Hazel Hardy Starr. On Oct. 25, 1947, Urban married ReJane "Jean" Martel. Jean predeceased Urban on May 26, 2006. Urban is survived by his six children, Urban R. Starr Jr. of North Troy and friends, Kellie and Charlie, Linda Starr Alberghini and Tom of Rochester, N.H., Sally Starr McAllister and Tom of Bridgeton, ME, Jane Starr Leblanc and Brian of Lakeland, Fla., George E. SOUTH HERO - Barbara M. Steadman, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2010, in Starr Farm Nursing Center, Burlington. Barbara was born in Vergennes on Feb. 16, 1921, the daughter of Oscar and Marguerite (Langeway) Stone. She married Warren B. Steadman on Dec. 30, 1940, and was predeceased by him on Nov. 3, 2008. They were married for 68 years. She and Warren moved to South Hero in 1947, as part owner and operator of the tourist resort, Idle Hurst Lodge. In 1957, Warren and Barbara built and operated their own vacation resort, The Anchorage. She is survived by her two children, Warren R. Steadman Jr., and Mary Jane Steadman, both of South Hero; her three sisters, Rose Plankey, Edith Minor, both of Vergennes, and Flora Steadman of Springfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010, in the South Hero Congregational Church. BURLINGTON - Herbert A. Steady, 62, died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 in the Starr Farm Nursing Home following a valiant battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Herbert was born on Aug. 21, 1947 in Burlington, the son of Bernard and Jean (Nattress) Steady. He graduated from Champlain College and worked for IBM as an accountant for over 30 years. Following retirement from IBM, he managed ESOX in Burlington. Herb was a big sports enthusiast. He loved collecting sports memorabilia, and was a huge Yankees and Cowboys fan. He also enjoyed collecting golf and baseball cards. Herb is survived by his mother, Theresa Steady, of Grand Isle; and by his siblings and their spouses, Jane Kirkman of TX, Bradley and Brenda Steady of Milton, Kevin Steady of Grand Isle, David Steady of Portsmouth, N.H., Sara McDonald of Williston, Shawn Steady and fiancé Melissa Walker of Grand Isle, Sue and John Lawrence of Grand Isle and Betty Desmarais of Fla. Herb is survived also by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Bernard, in 2007. BURLINGTON, VT - Benjamin C. Stein, 87, formerly of Burlington died at the Arbors on January 19, 2010. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Oct. 28, 1922, son of Benjamin C. and Josephine (Houseman) Stein. Ben was an advanced student, earning his Masters in Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at the age of 20. He met his wife and lifelong love, Dorothy, at the Youth Hostel on the Mountain Road in Stowe, while on a ski trip the winter of 194041. He and Dorothy arrived in Burlington (to stay) on Christmas Eve, 1947. He practiced architecture for over 50 years in the Burlington area. Among many other services to the community, he served as state President of the Jaycees, and on the ACLU board. He was a prolific watercolor artist, painting mostly landscapes and cityscapes, both around Vermont and around the world. He was an avid outdoorsman, hiking, canoeing, and skiing with family, friends, and the Green Mountain Club. He also found great joy in dancing, from square to contra to folk to Scottish and English Country Dance. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Stewart Stein, on Aug. 31, 1998. He is survived and remembered by Daniel Stein of Essex Junction, Jennifer and Lance Barker of Canyon City, Ore., Deborah Stein Sharpe and her husband, Jim Sharpe of Canton, Mass., Matthew and Josie Stein of Truckee, Calif., David and Carla Stein of Haverhill, Mass., Michelle Stein of Montreal, and ten grandchildren, Joshua Satcher, Elisha, Kenneth, Eric, Melody, Judith and Gabriel Stein and Nathaniel, Jacob and Janice Sharpe. SOUTH BURLINGTON - Irene G. Stevens, 90, died on Sunday, May 9, 2010, in Birchwood Terrace Health Care, Burlington. Irene was born on June 4, 1919, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Camille (Vozzella) Santoro. She was married to Nicholas R. Stevens, who predeceased her on April 20, 1992. Irene was first and foremost a lady. A woman of beauty, class and integrity. Irene, Mom, Nana, Nina had an incredible inner strength that revealed itself through all aspects of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Crow and Michael, of So. Burlington; her son, Gregory Stevens of Staten Island, N.Y.; grandsons, William "Nick" Crow of So. Burlington, Harrison Stevens of Boulder, Colo.; and granddaughter, Hunter Stevens of Boulder, Colo.; her brother, Robert Santoro and wife, Ann, of Brighton, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2010, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. SHELBURNE - Barbara Wells McCallie Stewart of Shelburne, Stowe, Hutchinson Island, Fla., and Chattanooga, Tenn. died peacefully and with grace on Nov. 24, 2010 in the Burlington Rehabilitation Center. Barbara (Barbie) was born at the Astor Hotel in Tientsin, China on Jan. 29, 1920, shortly after her parents had completed a crossing of the Gobi desert with Roy Chapman Andrews, curator of the New York Museum of Natural History. She was the daughter of Edward Lee McCallie and Gwendolyn Wells Andrew. She grew up in Great Neck, N.Y. until circumstances forced a return to family in Chattanooga, Tenn., where she graduated from Girls Preparatory School in 1938. Barbara traveled after graduation to Hollywood, where she appeared in several films, including "Gone with the Wind." Moving to Montreal in 1940 to join her brother, Allan Andrew, she married Ferry Command pilot Pat Eves, tragically killed shortly thereafter. Consoled by his best man and fellow pilot, William Laing Stewart, they fell in love and were married in Baltimore on Dec. 12, 1943. After the war, the couple moved to Great Britain where William, the first man to cross the Atlantic 100 times, rose to become a Senior Captain with British Airways. The couple retired to Stowe, where they purchased the Stowe Motel, and then to Hutchinson Island, Fla. Barbara had many fascinating life stories, including her recollection of sitting on the dais with Eleanor Roosevelt, her memory of crossing the Atlantic in 1927 and hearing the Captain announce that passengers on the deck would be able to hear and perhaps glimpse Lindbergh on his historic flight. Barbara was fond of recalling that while in Hollywood, Errol Flynn failed to ask her to join him on his yacht, as she would gladly have gone. Barbara was predeceased by William, and is survived by her two sons, David of Shelburne and Malcolm of Vancouver, B.C. and his wife, Thecla Schiphorst; her beloved grandchildren, Kelly of Vancouver, B.C. and Andrew of Shelburne; her former daughter-in-law, Brenda Stewart of Shelburne; and her stepgrandchildren, Heather Ferrara of Hinesburg and Bill Bartlett of Williston. BURLINGTON - Sister Mary Stewart, RSM (Sr. Mary Gregory) of the Sisters of Mercy, Northeast Community, died at Mt. St. Mary's on June 14, 2010. She was born in Burlington on Aug. 8, 1926, the daughter of John William Stewart, MD and Mary Loretta (Miles) Stewart. Sr. Mary was educated at St. Monica Elementary School and Spaulding High School, Barre. In 1952, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree at Trinity College, Burlington; her master's degree in Biological Sciences from St. Michael's College in 1958, and a Master of Art Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College in 1984. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Feb. 2, 1947 and professed her vows on Aug. 25, 1949. Sr. Mary taught at Mt. St. Mary Academy, Cathedral and Pomeroy High School and Trinity College. Sister worked in various capacities at Trinity College: Assistant Campus Ministry and Director of Volunteer programs, Security Officer, Instructor of Biological Science, Director of Admissions, and Registrar. Sr. Mary Stewart ministered in The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Parish in Middlebury and served on the Parish Council, the Christian Service Committee and the St. Mary's School Board. Sister ministered as Vocation Coordinator for the Sisters of Mercy and also devoted long hours serving in our Mercy development office. Sr. Mary's great sense of humor and her love of the Boston Red Sox and New York Giants will long be remembered. Sr. Mary also served by sharing her expertise and experience on several committees and boards: Vermont Sisters Senate, Vermont Catholic Charities, Diocesan Communications Board, Diocesan Diaconate Review Board, Addison County Home Health Board and Addison County Court Diversions Program as a Review Board Member. Sr. Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, Cecily Ann and Jack Crider, Martha Loretta Stewart and John W. and Celeste Stewart; her cousins, Judy Miles and Ruth Curtin; her grandnieces and grand-nephews; and by her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Mercy. She was predeceased by her parents, John William Stewart, MD and Mary Loretta (Miles) Stewart; and her brothers, David and John Stewart. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at Mt St. Mary Chapel, 100 Mansfield Ave. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery. MIDDLEBURY - Mildred L. Stockwell, 92, died Friday morning, Aug. 6, 2010 at her residence. Born May 28, 1918 in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Louis & Johanne (Paulson) Smith. Rollin Marcus Strong, 85, died March 1, 2010, at home in San Mateo, Calif. at the side of his devoted wife Mary Ann Strong after surviving colon cancer and several stokes. He was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Plattsburg, N.Y. to Harry Marcus Strong and Emma (Knox) Strong then moved to Hinesburg, Vt. where he attended high school. Rollin attended UVM and Burlington Business School when he answered his country's call during World War II. Rollin served in the US Army's 80th division in Europe and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge as well as other battle stars and awards. He left the army after the war and returned to Vermont where worked for the Barton telephone company before moving to New York City where he attended Pierce Electronics school under the G.I. Bill. After receiving his degree he moved back to Vermont where he worked for the General Electric Co. during the day and as a television repairman in the evenings. In 1965, Rollin moved to San Jose, Calif. where he worked as a manufacturing engineer for several companies and operating his own business in San Mateo, Calif. He retired from National Data Checker in 1991 where he made the machines that are used to scan items at grocery stores. He is survived by his second wife Mary Ann of 40 years and his two stepdaughters; Elayne Uitz, her husband Ariello and their Daughter Veronica of Foster City, Calif. and Julie Clibourn of Redwood City, Calif.; and his three children from his first marriage to Rebecca "Alexander" Munson of Colchester; Alexander Strong of San Jose a retired Electrical Engineer; Jolene Strong and two children Paige and Brett Hoffman of Superior, Colo.; and William Rollin Strong of Colchester. Rollin's hobbies were photography, electronics, machinist, watch and clock repair and flying his plane. He was also a ham radio operator, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Services will be held at the United Church in Hinesburg Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:30 p.m.

GEORGIA - Mitchell L. Sturgeon, Jr., 78, a lifelong Georgia resident, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with his loving family at his side. Born in Georgia, May 3, 1932, he was the only child of the late Mitchell and Irene (Duquette) Sturgeon. On Oct. 6, 1962, he married Alice Chase in St. Mary's Church in St. Albans. Mitchell attended school in Georgia, graduated from BFA-St. Albans in 1950, and then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Shelton during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge, he worked on the family farm and for 35 years, was employed at Fonda Container, retiring in 1995. Mitchell was an active member of Ascension Parish in Georgia assisting his wife Alice in the preparation of meals and doing behind the scene projects. He was also a member of Banner Grange and enjoyed shopping for groceries, gardening, working in his yard and cleaning the pool. He leaves his wife, Alice of Georgia; their nine surviving children, Michelle Bergstrom and husband, Douglas of Georgia, Molly Lyon and husband Chris, Melissa Fisher and husband Roger, Mary Pigeon and husband Todd all of Fairfax, Matthew Sturgeon and wife Jennifer of Milton, Margaret St. Pierre and husband Jason of Fletcher, Mark Sturgeon of Montpelier, Mead Sturgeon and wife Danielle of St. Albans, and Miles Sturgeon of Georgia; nine surviving grandchildren, Nicholas, Hilary, Samantha and Joshua Bergstrom, Aidan Fisher, Tyler and Ava Pigeon, Mollie and Kyle St. Pierre; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a loving son, Michael John Sturgeon, Jan. 23, 1985; and grandson, Philip Bergstrom, Oct. 29, 1992. Morrisville - Gary Sudol, 53, died peacefully on Nov. 8, 2010 at his home in Morrisville with his loving family and close friends by his side. Gary was born March 28, 1957 in Passaic, N.J., the son of Frank and Margaret Foster Sudol of Columbus, N.J. He graduated from high school in Oakland, N.J. in 1975 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Johnson State College in 1982. He married his best friend and loving partner, MaryEllen Shea, on Aug. 20, 1988 in Stowe. Gary had many passions, among them being a fine woodworker and accomplished artist, specializing in photo-real landscapes, and he also achieved a Second Degree Black Belt. Gary craved the outdoors, especially taking photos of the clouds, pastures, mists and sunsets, cows and horses. When not photographing, he was usually found working away in his incredible vegetable garden, and his downtime was spent skiing, mountain biking, cycling and paddling on the Green River Reservoir with his wife and children. Gary contributed more than 25 years as a member of the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol. One of his greatest winter joys was touring his friends and buddies off trail, finding the "pooder and floof." Gary was a great builder, and he and his wife built their own home from the ground up with all the "Gary" extra special touches. Gary's family and friends were the most important part of his life. He'll miss his friends at Dunlavey's Black Belt Academy and the crew at Sissler Builders, and especially the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol. He is survived by his wife, MaryEllen Sudol; their children, Jaynie and Ian Sudol; his parents, Frank and Margaret Sudol of Columbus, N.J.; and a brother, Glen Sudol and wife, Kyrsten, and their children, Montana and Jake of Barnegat, N.J. FLETCHER - Henryk Sulikowski, 73, of Fletcher, died peacefully as he wished at his home with his loving dog "Pup" by his side after a short battle with cancer and congestive heart failure. He was born in Poland on April 29, 1937, the son of Stanislaw Sulikowski and Rozalia Sulikowska. Henryk was a holocaust survivor and moved to the USA in 1957. He lived in NYC for five years before settling in Jeffersonville, Vt. He ran a restaurant called the Hutch welcoming the skiers in with his wonderful polish dishes. He loved to cook. He had a love for animals, especially horses which he trained and rode. He enjoyed collecting art and comic books. He loved being outside and had many beautiful gardens. Henryk is survived by his brother, Edmund and his wife, Michelle, of Williston; nephews, Sean and Adam; and a niece, Nicole. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Romek; a sister, Jadwiga; and his partner, Marshall Lange. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010 at 10 a.m. in New Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Plattsburgh Ave., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, VT 05478. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - C. Fred Sullivan was 82 years old when he died in Albuquerque, N.M. were he lived the last five years with his wife, Toni. A long-time resident of Stowe, Fred owned and operated the Siebeness Lodge and was Business Manager of VT Life Magazine. An active Rotarian, Fred served as Vice President and President of Stowe Rotary. For the past year, Fred battled valiantly to survive Metastatic Renal Cancer, but on May 27, 2010 his battle was lost. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his son, Kurt and his daughter, Traci, who live in Albuquerque; and son, Scott and Scott's life partner, Richard Rush, who live in Belmont, Calif. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ESSEX JUNCTION - Michael John "Sully" Sullivan Sr., 60, passed away at his Essex home on Monday, March 15, 2010. He was born in Fall River, Mass. on June 25, 1949 son of the late John and Ruth (Hunt) Sullivan. His family and friends know well that Sully did not go gently into the good night, but most certainly did rage and rage against the dying of the light. He was a 1967 graduate of Essex Jct. High School, and attended the University of Vermont, where he was a standout member of the soccer team for several years. Sully worked throughout Chittenden County, from construction to restaurants, bars, and at several golf/country clubs. He had a special fondness for the time he spent as bar manager aboard the Lake Champlain cruise ship "Spirit of Ethan Allen." He was blessed with a supreme natural athletic prowess which set him apart from others in all of the many sports he took up. Sully always played to win, and hated to lose-a fact readily apparent to any and all who opposed him on field or court. His strength, speed, and finesse on the soccer pitch were the stuff of legend-those characteristics manifest yet today in the form of his young grandson Jake. Basketball, softball, handball, fearsome quarterback of Essex flag football, golf, state champion in racquetball-Sully could do it all (to the point that he was scouted by several professional baseball teams). He was a life long Yankees and Giants fan. This remarkable person, one who could on natural ability alone compete on a very high level in any sport, would utilize an equally special intellect to reason and comment upon the world around him. Sully's physical presence and athletic endeavors were primarily confined to Chittenden County, but through his prolific reading and curiosity he became a true citizen of the world. He found knowledge and solace in his books, a formidable memory permitting him to access them from afar. For years he conducted, along with his friends, the famous Friday afternoon "GHT" (Gentlemens' High Tea) at Murray's Tavern in Essex Junction. There, at the head of his table, he would hold forth on a range of topics, from philosophy through phonetics to philandering(but never any jokes of course). Within Sully's rugged exterior was a gentle, kind soul, something that surfaced many times throughout his life. He loved his Mother dearly, and was her companion and caregiver for an extended period of time. Before every bocce game at his favorite court in Jericho he would present the lady of the house with several boxes of yellow "peeps," as he knew they were her favorite. That very bocce court, groomed and well maintained, will be officially named "Sully's Court" on opening day this summer. We know he will be there watching, waving and threatening us with his shillelagh if anyone attempts to cheat. Sully was so loved by so many, and will be so missed by all. He was loved as a father, grandfather, brother, and loyal friend. He is survived by his son: Michael J. Sullivan, Jr. and his wife Noela of Guilford; His sister Maureen Sullivan of Chandler, Ariz.; Two grandchildren: Jakob Sullivan and Ryder Sullivan both of Guilford who affectionately called their Grandfather "Pepe" and the mother of his son Michael J. Jr., Linda (Turner) Stark of Scottsdale, Ariz. He was also predeceased by his brother John Sullivan. Visiting hours will be held today Friday, March 19, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the A. W. Rich Funeral Home - Essex Chapel. A funeral service will be held at A.W. Rich Funeral Home - Essex Chapel on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Essex.

BURLINGTON - Jeannette E. Sumner, 92, of Burlington died peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare with loving family by her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church in Burlington. Interment will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Colchester. WILLISTON, VT - Robert "Bob" Stockwell Sumner died peacefully at home in Williston on Feb. 3, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Wilder, Vt., on July 25, 1924 to Ralph and Mildred Sumner. After high school he served as a Marine in WWII (Pacific Theater including Saipan). He graduated from UVM in 1950 with a BS in Commerce and Economics. Bob sold insurance with Penn Mutual in Philadelphia, Toledo and Boston, before returning to Vermont in 1970. Bob was active in Lyric Theater and involved with the Flynn Center from its inception. He was an avid cyclist and x-country skier into his 80s. He was a Master Gardener and spent many happy hours in his vegetable garden. Some of his memberships included the Chamber of Commerce and Optimists Club. He volunteered at Vermont Adult Learning. Bob always remained a loyal fan to the Red Sox and Patriots. Survivors include Sharon Rosenthal, his companion of 20 years. His son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Rebecca Sumner of Essex, Vt., his nephew Lee Sumner and family of Maine. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother and sisterin-law, Alan and Pat Sumner. Bob enjoyed his relationships with Sharon's family: Richard, Shirley, Stuart, Eric, Alayne, Mike, Laura, Jon and the grandchildren, Thomas, Robbie, Austin and Johnny. A memorial will take place at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home in Essex Junction at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 with a gathering to follow. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Woodstock. BURLINGTON - Marjorie Sutterby, 88, died peacefully at the COnverse Home on Dec. 2, 2010 after a long ill- ness, in the loving presence of her family members, friend, and faithful companion, KittyKitty. She was born in Binghamton, N.Y., the daughter of Albert F. Ulmer and Laurette Goembel. When she was young, her family moved back to Buffalo, N.Y., where most of her family originated. She attended William Smith College (coordinate college with Hobart College) in Geneva, N.Y. and graduated in 1942. She met her husband, Robert Lewis Beinert, at college and they married on Christmas Eve 1943. After serving in the Navy at the end of WWII, Bob attended Cornell University for his Ph.D. and then they settled in Geneva where he was a mathematics professor until his death in 1963. Marge subsequently had an eight-year work career at William Smith College, culminating in the position of director of admissions. During this time, she also was on the Geneva School Board and briefly a trustee at Hobart and William Smith. Marge married Lawrence Damico in 1968 and he died in 1970. She married William Sutterby in 1972 and they moved to Oregon, where she lived until Bill's death in 1979. She relocated to East Aurora, N.Y. which was close to her daughter, Allison and her family. In 2007, she moved to an apartment in West Seneca, N.Y. and then to the Converse Home in Burlington on Dec. 1, 2009, close to her son, Laurence, his wife, Kathleen, and her three grandchildren who live in the Boston area. Marge loved to play. She loved playing golf, tennis, bridge, and other card games. She loved riding horses, and while living in Oregon, had her own horse, Smoke. She very much enjoyed living on Seneca Lake, flower gardens, traveling, correct grammar, and the annual family reunions. Even though she lived in Vermont for only one year, she affected many people's lives here. Her gentleness and strength of spirit brought her family and others closer together. She is survived by her daughter, Allison Girod and her husband, Donald, of Otto, N.Y.; her son, Laurence Beinert and and his wife, Kathleen, of Williston; her grandson, Lewis Girod and his wife, Sara Carrier, of Cambridge, Mass.; her granddaughter, Libbey Beinert Hunnewell and her husband, Lt. Stephen Hunnewell, of Lowell, Mass.; her granddaughter, Marcy Beinert of Somerville, Mass.; her greatgranddaughter, Ellery Girod of Cambridge, Mass.; her nice, Paula Charron and her son, Douglas, of Granville, Mass.; her special friend, Dhyanna Lucia of Richmond; and her beloved cat, KittyKitty. She was predeceased by her three husbands; her sister, Jean Ulmer Lundy; and most recently her granddaughter, Carolyn Girod, who passed away after a tragic bicycle accident in July of 2009. The family would like to thank the staff at the Converse Home, Dr. Marvin Klikunis, the VNA Care Connection (especially Michelle and Lisa), the VNA Hospice (especially Mel), and her private caregivers, Janet and Laurie, for their care during her year in Vermont. Interment will be in the spring in the family plot at Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva. SOUTH BURLINGTON - Blanche M. Sutton, 88, of So. Burlington, died on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in her home surrounded by her children. She was born in Bennington, Vt. on June 24, 1921, the daughter of the late DJ and Margaret (Parent) DeForge. She was married to Rollin R. Sutton in Nov. 1942. He predeceased her on Oct. 3, 2005. Blanche is survived by her three children Robert E. Sutton and wife Julie of Cherry Hills Village, Colo., Christine Bessett and husband Jim of Chadds Ford, Pa., William R. Sutton and wife Mariza Arantes of Vienna, Va.; her grandchildren Katherine and David Sutton, Michelle DelSignore; Steven Bessett, Catherine Kessler; Kimberly, Elizabeth, and Michael Sutton; six greatgrandchildren, and by several nieces and nephews. Blanche was predeceased by her brothers Roland, Bob, Leon, George, and Norman DeForge. Blanche's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers from Hospice of the Champlain Valley and the wonderful staff at Pillsbury Manor South. WILLISTON - Roderick "Rod" Sutton, 74, died on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 in the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born on March 27, 1936 on the Sutton Farmstead in Williston, the son of Harry and Vera (Larrow) Sutton. Rod graduated from Burlington High School in 1954. He was a lifelong, third generation, farmer on the Sutton Family Farm in Williston. Rod retired from farming in the late 1980s and went into business for himself, bushhogging and rototilling. He married Jeanie Anderson and they were married for 14 years. He enjoyed cars, trucks, antique farm equipment, horses, and music. Survived by his sister, Barbara Sutton Arms and her husband Chad of Vassalboro, ME; two nephews, John Arms of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Todd Arms of Ashland, Mass.; niece, Nancy Arms of Newton, Mass.; and his former wife, Jeanie Anderson Sutton of So. Burlington. Predeceased by his parents and sister, Eleanor Sutton. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. Burial will follow in the family lot in East Cemetery, Williston. SUMMERFIELD, FL - Nancy H. Swanson of Summerfield, died Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the home of her daughter in Hingham, Mass., following a long illness. She was the wife of Paul K. Swanson, also of Summerfield, who survives her. Born in Burlington, Vt., on February 8, 1928, Nancy was the daughter of the late David Willard Howe and Marjorie (Roberts) Howe of Burlington. She attended Burlington schools and the University of Vermont. She was married to Hans Lieb of Zurich, Switzerland, and was later divorced. In 1987, Nancy was married to Paul Swanson in Charlotte, Vt. In addition to her husband Nancy leaves her two daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren: Carol Ann Lieb and her husband Edward Malouf and their children Isabelle and George Malouf of Scituate, Mass., and Marlene Soszynski and her husband Steve and their sons Eric and Andrew Soszynski of Hingham, Mass. Nancy is survived as well by her sisters, Lois H. McClure of Shelburne, Vt., and Barbara H. Tucker of Los Osos, Calif. Final services will be held in February. Gifts in memory of Nancy can be made to Habitat for Humanity.

MILTON - Charlotte Hester Sweeney, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 in the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, surrounded by her loving family. Charlotte was born on March 20, 1921 in Milton, the daughter of Earl and Charlotte (Osgood) Slocum. Hester graduated from Milton High School in 1939. On Oct. 30, 1943 she married Floyd Sweeney at St. Ann's in Milton. They began farming in Colchester shortly after. Hester's favorite pasttime was knitting. She also had a great passion for her job at the Burnham Memorial Library, where she worked as a librarian from 1960-1988. She earned her librarian's certificate in 1974. She was predeceased by Floyd in 1997. Hester is survived by her daughters, Judy Campbell and husband, David, of Colchester, and Sharon St. Onge and husband, Andre, of Trois Rivers, P.Q.; by her grandchildren, Rebecca Lesmerises, Jenny St. Onge, Sarah St. Onge, Elizabeth Hill, Travis Campbell, and Kathleen Campbell. She is also survived by six greatgrandchildren; her sister-inlaw, Shirley Sweeney; and a brother-in-law, Winston LaCasse and his wife, Cathy; and by many special and thoughtful nieces and nephews. OWOSSO, Mich. - Rebecca L. (Benoit) Swiger, 50, died May 25, 2010 in San Francisco. She is the daughter of Robert W. Benoit of Vt. and Wilma L. Benoit of Mich. She leaves seven children, Bradley, Kevin, Zachery, Justin, Lisa, Jessica, and Derek; sister, Carolyn; brothers, Robert Jr., and Daniel. MONTPELIER - Genevieve H. Sykas, 85, formerly of North Street and more recently of the Gary Home in Montpelier, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 in the Woodridge Nursing Home. She was born on May 14, 1925 in New Rochelle, N.Y., the daughter of Herman and Elsie (Ek) Hageman. She graduated high school in 1942 from Springfield Technical High School in Springfield, Mass. She attended the American International College and graduated with a BA in 1946. On June 1, 1947, she married James W. Sykas in Springfield, Mass. She and her husband owned and operated the Coffee Corner restaurant in Montpelier for 26 years, until they retired in 1983. She is survived by her children, Susan S. Lang and her husband, Lynn, of Essex Junction, Mark J. Sykas and his wife, Sharon, of Stratham, N.H.; daughter-inlaw, Lady Astacio of Hollywood, Fla.; grand- children, Jason Lang and his wife, Kathryn Crampton, of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Abigail Sykas of Dover, N.H., Benjamin Sykas of Willimantic, Conn., and Alexander Sykas of White River; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sydney and Samuel Crampton Lang of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; a sister, Elsie LaPointe; and a sisterin-law, Marion Hageman; and many nieces and nephews. Genevieve is also survived by her husband's family, John Sykas and his wife, Marilyn, of Montpelier; Paul Sykas and his wife, Patricia, of Groton; and Peter Sykas and his wife, Barbara, of Anacortes, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. Genevieve was predeceased by her husband on April 4, 1998; and a son, Eric J. Sykas on Dec. 28, 2008. In keeping with Genevieve's request, there are no calling hours and a private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. - Abbey Rose Szubrych, loving infant daughter of Stephen A. and Diane L (nee Rusnak) Szubrych died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Survivors include her parents, her paternal grandparents; Casey and Grace Szubrych of Carpentersville, Ill. her maternal grandparents; George and Mary Rusnak of Swanton, Vt., her maternal great-grandparents; Leo and Anna Cota, her uncle; Mark (Amy) Rusnak of Clifton Park, N.Y. her aunt, Susan Rusnak of South Burlington, Vt., and her cousins Lindsay and Carly Rusnak. Abbey was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents and a uncle; Casey Paul Szubrych. Burial will follow in the Windridge Cemetery, Cary. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
