, 82, of Newport, beloved husband of Jeannette Reed, died peacefully on October 14, 2007, in Newport. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Full military honors will be conducted at the service.

, 57, died with his loving family by his side and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Mr. Willis won his battle with cancer after 16 years and then fought host-versus-graft disease after a T-cell transplant almost five years ago. He was born September 1, 1950, a beloved son of Margaret (Cota) Willis and the late Milton Willis Sr. He was a furniture maker for Ethan Allen in Orleans. He later was employed in the Vermont Air National Guard as a civil engineer for 28 years; he served with the Honor Guard during this time. He was a 35-year member of the North Troy Fire Department, and he was a commander of Jay Peak Post 28 American Legion from 1997 to 1999. He was an active community member until health issues prevented his participation in the many things he loved. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in North Troy for 33 years; when he was unable to attend he still continued growing in his faith through television ministry. Recently he enjoyed a wonderful celebration given by family and close friends. He was a wonderful and loving husband to his wife, Gloria, for 36 years. He was an exceptional father to his children Tina Marie Willis and Jason Neil Willis and his wife, Julie. He was a wonderful "pupup" to his grandchildren: Michelle Rae Parenteau, Taylor Michel Parenteau, Camden Neil Willis, and KadenceCristine Willis. He leaves behind two brothers, Milton Willis Jr. and Danny Willis; by one sister, Linda Driver; by his mother, Margaret; by his mother-in-law, Anna Tice; by seven brothers-in-law; by seven sisters-in-law; and by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and very close friends. He was predeceased by his father, Milton Willis Sr., in 2005; and by his father-in-law, Maurice Tice Sr., in 2000. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Friends may call from 2 p.m. on Wednesday until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in North Troy Cemetery with full military honors. , 76, of Manchester, New Hampshire, died October 18, 2007. Mrs. Sanborn was born February 10, 1931, in Littleton, New Hampshire, to David and Jessie (Ennor) Libby. She was a 1949 graduate of Lisbon High School and a 1952 graduate of the Elliott Hospital School of Nursing. She married Robert D. Sanborn in 1952. Her enjoyments in life were especially her family, babysitting, singing, crocheting, and baking. She is survived by her husband, Robert; by children: Mark and wife, Linda, Robert, Matthew and his wife, Cindy, all of Manchester, and Deborah of Washington, D.C.; by 11 grandchildren; by eight great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Betty Robinson of Barton and Thelma Wells; by a sister-in-law, Jeanette "Sue" Libby, of Brownington; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dear daughter Rebekah; by her brother David of Brownington; and by her sister Velma Bowman of Barton. Ms. Royston was born August 12, 1981, in St. Johnsbury, a daughter of Jody Royston and Carolyn (Daniels) Jorgensen. She attended North Country Union High School and was a waitress in restaurants. She loved to dance and taught tap and ballet dancing. She also loved nature, and she was a free spirit. She is survived by her mother, Carolyn Jorgensen, and her husband, Jan, of Walnut Cove, North Carolina; by her father, Jody Royston, and his girlfriend, Flora Siqouin, of Island Pond; by her brothers Travis Lane Royston of Virginia and Tony Ray Daniels; by a nephew, Cory Allen Lane Royston, of Virginia; and by her grandparents Doris Daniels of Colebrook, New Hampshire, and Avis Royston of Groton. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, William Daniels; and by her paternal grandfather, Joe Royston. , 82, died in her home of 29 years in Johnson, among family. Over the years, Mrs. Robinson and her husband, Daniel F. Robinson, had lived in several states, including Florida, New York, Maine, Texas, Kansas, and New Jersey, but returned home to Vermont in 1978 to retire. She was born August 9, 1925, in Irasburg, a daughter of Ernest Wilfred and Doria (Dudevoir)Houle. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Daniel F. Robinson; by her brothers and sisters-in-law: Adrien and Laurette (Paquette) Houle of Irasburg and Donat and Gisele (Lussier) Houle of Orleans; by her sisters and brothers-in-law: Terry (Houle) and Elmer Johnson of Spencer, Massachusetts, and Claire (Houle) and Jean Roy of Spencer; by her children Stephen Robinson and his wife, Candy (Gillihan), of Omaha, Nebraska, and Doria (Robinson) Shepherd and her husband, Michael, of Somerset, United Kingdom; by four grandchildren: Matthew and Patrick Robinson and Nerissa and Adam Shepherd; by two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Shayne Robinson; and by many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by brothers Wilfred and Roger Houle. The Reverend Wilfred Andre Houle (Mrs. Robinson's nephew) celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John's Catholic Church in Johnson October 20. , 82, of Newport died peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Newport on October 14, 2007. Mr. Reed was born August 5, 1925, in Burlington, a son of Grant D. and Mabel (Addison) Reed. On December 5, 1947, he married Jeannette Lantagne, who survives him. He attended Newport City and Newport Center schools before leaving to enter the U.S. Navy at age 17 for World War II. He later received his general equivalency diploma. His Navy career spanned 40 years when he retired in 1985 from U.S. Navy Reserve Unit MCB 27 Battalion. His enlistment included duty as an armed guard on merchant vessels, seaman duty on destroyers and aboard the SS Contreras, SS Samuel Colt, SS Louis Brandeis, the aircraft carrier USS Fanshaw Bay, CVE 70 submarine, Seahorse, Battleship USS Rochester, and others. He served as a recruiter for the South Weymouth Naval Air Station, where he helped recruit many area youths into Navy schools and service. He retired as a first class petty officer, serving with distinction in the U.S. Navy Special Operations Skibees Cold Weather Battalion RN MCB 27 in Brunswick, Maine. After an honorable discharge from World War II, he worked for Citizens Utilities as a lineman and later as a plant operator before being recalled to the U.S. Navy for the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he secured employment with the U.S. government General Services Administration. He retired as a building inspector, with his territory extending along the U.S.-Canadian border from Richford to Fort Kent, Maine. Anyone who knew him was aware that he always worked second and sometimes third jobs, including contract work with the telephone company and as a service attendant with Pete Logan's service station, and later at the same location, Reed's Mobil with his son Jim for over 30 years. He enjoyed a lifetime of close relationships with childhood friends and friendships made while in the service and at work. His helpful nature and extra efforts earned recognition and respect and many awards throughout his lifetime. He embraced and was embraced by relatives of the Addison, Kendall, and Lantagne families and treated them all as brothers and sisters. He was a life member of Memphremagog Lodge 65 of Free and Accepted Masons, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798, an endowment member of the National Rifle Association, a lifelong member of American Legion Post 21, a plank owner of the U.S. Navy Memorial, and a supporter of the Derby Fish and Game Club. He is survived by a son, James R. Reed, and his wife, Pamela, of Newport; by three grandchildren: Jennifer A. Reed and her fiancé, John Kenney, of Wilmington, Massachusetts, Grant D. Reed and his companion, Caitlyn Ash, of Hooksett, New Hampshire, and Katherine M. Reed of Newport; and by his sisters Carolyn R. Blue of Sarasota, Florida, and Ellen Eastes of Grandville, Ohio. He was predeceased by his sister Betty Reed Hoffman; and his stepmother, Medora Kendall Reed. A graveside service was held October 20 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Full military honors were observed. , 87, died on October 16, 2007, in Glover. Mrs. Powers was born April 1, 1920, in Saskatchewan, a daughter of Charles and Florence (Yates) Wheatly. She worked at several jobs throughout her life, including being a toll collector for the state of Connecticut, retiring after ten years of service. She married William Powers, and they traveled extensively in the United States and Europe before he died in 1994. She liked to grow and tend to her flower gardens, and she enjoyed traveling to the casino in Stanstead, Quebec. She loved all of nature's creatures - Chippy-do the chipmunk, the wild ducks, her beautiful birds, and her beloved Magoo, her faithful dog of 14 years. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her children: Gordon Lonsdale of Glover, William and Candice Powers of Storrs, Connecticut, Pat Urso and Judy Hayes of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and Robert and Eileen LaVallee of Stafford, Connecticut; by her grandchildren, including: Tracey and Kimberly Lonsdale, Paula Barnaby, Jeffrey LaValle, and Christina LaValle; by 12 great-grandchildren; and by her sister-in-law Donna Wheatly. , 82, of Montgomery Center, husband of Catherine (Alt), died suddenly at home on October 18, 2007, with his wife of 54 years at his side. Mr. O'Neill was born October 16, 1925, in Saugus, Massachusetts, a son of James (born in Wigan, England) and Salomeja "Sadie" Nowak (born in Glogowiec, Poland). He served in the Merchant Marines as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during the awful battle conditions of World War II at age 17, transporting troops, munitions, tanks, and the like, and later in the U.S. Army in Korea. After that he attended New York University, majoring in mathematics, and was employed as chief canteen officer for the Veterans Administration in Brooklyn, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, White River Junction, and Dayton, Ohio. He was a great student of history and politics. He was a gentle man who loved his family and the world. He is survived by his wife; by six children and their spouses: Jim and Virginia of Delaware, Ohio, Laura Blubaugh of Springboro, Ohio, Amy and Craig Bannister of Jeffersonville, William and Michelle of Preston, Connecticut, Francis and Elayne of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, and Eileen and John Bigelow of Fairfax; by ten grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; and by two brothers and their wives, Edward and Mary of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, and John and Joan of Maine. He was predeceased by eight siblings. A celebration of his life will be held at the Lodge in Jay on Saturday, October 27, from 2 to 6 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to LINK TV, which he enjoyed watching.

, of Newport died peacefully October 18, 2007, in Derby. Mr. Lemay was born May 9, 1913, in Laconia, New Hampshire, a son of Arthur and Eva (Beaudoin) Lemay. On September 30, 1933, he married Pauline Coe, who predeceased him. During his lifetime he was a dairy farmer and logger. He started the Candlepin Restaurant and bowling alley in 1963. He enjoyed bowling until late in life, and he enjoyed playing pool, poker, and horsehoes. He held membership with the Knights of Columbus in Barton and Florida. He is survived by his children: Paul Lemay and his wife, Leona, of East Burke, Jeanine Marcotte and her husband, Gerald, of Bellingham, Massachusetts, Emily Morin and her husband, Raymond, of Acton, Tennessee, Delores Lapierre and her husband, Bill, of Derby, and Bernard Lemay and his wife, Kay, of Meridian, Mississippi; by 18 grandchildren; by 31 great-grandchildren; by six great-great-grandchildren; by a brother, Raymond Lemay, of West Stewartstown, New Hampshire; by sisters: Theresa, Jean, Rachel, and Mugette, all of Quebec; and by several nieces and nephews. , 88, died at her home in Barton on Thursday, October 12, 2007. Mrs. Compton was born in Hamburg, New Jersey, on February 17, 1919, to Daniel and Carrie (Kimball) Lewis. She was a stay-at-home mom, a truly gentle, loving, caring mother and friend. She loved her flower gardens, especially taking care of roses. She delighted in taking short trips around New England, especially to Maine. In later years she settled for short rides. She loved to cook to the delight of her friends and relatives. She will be deeply missed by her good friend Ruth Wright. She enjoyed the nursing help from visiting nurses who cared for her. She is survived by her son Robert Compton of Barton; by her daughter Barbara Compton of Barton; by her grandchildren Adrien Compton of St. Johnsbury and Al and his wife, Paulette Simard, of Brownington; by her great-grandchildren Jen and Joe Simard; and by her sister Julia Farber of Franklin, New Jersey. , 83, of Jay died peacefully October 24, 2007, in Newport. Mrs. Cota was born September 22, 1924, in Lowell, a daughter of Edward and Sara (Morse) Sargent. In 1944 she married Arnold Cota, who survives her. She and her husband owned and operated their farm in Jay for over 35 years. She was an auxiliary member of the Jay Fire Department, where she spent many hours supporting its projects, and she loved to play bingo at the firehouse. She loved to cook, to the delight of her family, and she cooked at the Jay school. She liked to knit and crochet. Her family was the love of her life, and she delighted in their visits. They enjoyed going dancing and listening to country music and playing cards. , 89, of Sheffield died at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury on Saturday evening, October 20, 2007. Mrs. Stevens was born in Westmore on December 11, 1917, one of 11 children born to Ora and Annie (Butler)Buskey. She first worked as a housekeeper as a young woman at the girls camp in Westmore. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she and her husband, Charles, managed the Willoughvale Inn for the Harters. They also cared for the Green Acres cottages across the road, making many friends renting to the vacationers who came to Willoughby Lake. After leaving Willoughby, the Stevens moved to West Burke. After her husband's death, she made her home with her son Jerry and granddaughters in Sheffield for the past 21 years. She is survived by her son Jerry N. Stevens of Sheffield; by her daughter-in-law Sandra Supan of Queen Creek, Arizona; by five grandchildren: Dennis Stevens of Lisbon, Maine, Ronnie Stevens of Enfield, New Hampshire, Michelle Stevens Tallman and her husband, Don, of Hyde Park, Lynette Stevens Peters and her husband, Scott, of Lyndonville, and Amy Stevens and Wayne Barrett of Hartland; by 11 great-grandchildren: Michael Jr., Christopher, Brian and Nicholas Stevens, Lucas and Ryan Tallman, Emily, Erin, and Ethan Peters, and Kayla and Mariah Barrett; by one brother, Earl Buskey, of Bradford; by three sisters: Pauline Buskey Murray of East Ryegate, Lillian Buskey Gilman of North Woodstock, New Hampshire, and Blanche Buskey Chapman of Middletown, Connecticut; by nieces and nephews; and by her close friend Nancy Toop of Massachusetts. , 71, died at his home in Spencer, Iowa, on Tuesday, October 23, 2007. Mr. Morse, son of Clarence and Rose Marie Arel Morse, was born December 6, 1935, in North Troy. His childhood years were spent in North Troy, where he received his education. On October 26, 1968, he married Joyce Brooks in North Troy, and following their marriage, they lived in Newport Center. In 1976, they moved to Spencer, where he worked for the Eaton Corporation for almost 22 years until his retirement. He attended Bible college and became a licensed minister. While living in Spencer, he was an active member of the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church, where he assisted in the church's ministerial needs and served as music director. He was predeceased by his parents; and by his wife, Joyce Brooks, on February 11, 1998. He is survived by one daughter, Hope Beam, and her husband, Troy, of Norfolk, Nebraska; by one son, Thomas Morse, and his wife, Marcia, of Spencer; by two grandchildren, Elizabeth Morse and Wesley Morse; by eight siblings: Doris Wright of Windsor, Frank Morse of Brooksville, Florida, William and Katie Morse of Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, Richard and Dee Dee Morse of Cornish, New Hampshire, Gordon and Shirley Morse of Claremont, New Hampshire, Pearl and Bob Landry of Tunbridge, Florence Dau of Claremont, and Shirley and Reg Remick of Newport, New Hampshire; by his parents-in-law, Lincoln and Kathy Brooks, of Spencer; and by other relatives and many friends. , 82, of Newport died Sunday, October 28, 2007, in Newport following a short illness. Mrs. Provost was born in Newport on February 4, 1925, a daughter of Thomas and Susan Howard. She graduated from NewportHigh School in 1943. She continued to be an active member of her graduating class by assisting with class reunions and contacting former classmates to insure attendance. On November 11, 1946, she married Robert "Bob" Provost, formerly of Burlington, who predeceased her in 2002. As a young woman she worked at the Chittenden Bank. Later she assisted her husband for ten years running Bob's Market, a grocery store on the Causeway in Newport. When that site was chosen for an access road to the interstate, the couple opened Provost's on Main Street, which they operated together for 20 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, a volunteer with the North Country Hospital Auxiliary, and in later years an active member of the Four Seasons Garden Club. She loved people, and with her husband, had many close and personal friends. They enjoyed visiting with and being a part of an active group that did many things together including dining out and vacationing. Over the years both valued the memories they shared with so many Newport residents. She is survived by her brother Thomas S. Howard Jr. of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; by three daughters: Susan Provost of Brookfield, JoAnn Wells and her husband, Edward, of Middlebury, and Patricia Zeliff and her husband, Robert, of Bridport; by five grandchildren: Amy Wells and her husband, Shawn Denecker, Lauren Wells, Robyn Zeliff and her fiancé, Matthew Stattel, Suzanne Zeliff, and Noah Provost; by a great-granddaughter, Eliza Beatrice Denecker; and by close personal friend Gabi Davis of Brookfield. She leaves behind a group of friends who over the years have been an integral part of her life. , 88, a longtime resident of Albany, died Sunday, October 21, 2007, at North CountryHospital in Newport. Born in Glover on October 13, 1919, Mrs. Lawrence was a daughter of Eugene and Isadore (Skinner) Anderson. She attended grade school in Glover and graduated from Barton Academy in 1937. She attended the University of Vermont. In 1938 she married G. Roland Lawrence, and they made their home on the farm in Albany. Her church was very important to her. Throughout her life she was an active member of the Albany United Methodist Church, Maple Valley Grange, Pomona Grange, and the Albany Historical Society. She enjoyed the history of Albany, collecting and compiling the notes and stories for The History of Albany, Vermont, published in 1991. Her family was a great joy to her. She helped run the family dairy farm and the maple sugaring operation and raised three children. She was a loving caregiver to many family members and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and playing cards with friends. She leaves daughters Lorraine Barlow, and her husband, Melvin, of East Hampton, Connecticut, and Cynthia Corkins and her friend, Gordon Lougee, of Bristol; a son, Kendall, and his wife, Norma, of Canton, New York; five grandchildren: Lisa Soraci and her husband, Mark, Stephen Barlow and his wife, Jennifer, Nathan Lawrence and his wife, Sarah, Tamara Lanham and her husband, Jason, and Jessie-Ruth Corkins; eight great-grandchildren: Abigail and Evan Soraci, Jarred, Olivia and Mason Barlow, Morgan and McKenzie Lawrence, and Nora Lanham; and extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband, Roland, on December 28, 1992; and by a half-brother, Frank Anderson. A funeral service was held October 29 at the Albany United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathan Strong officiating. Interment followed in the Albany Village Cemetery. , 83, of Newport died October 22, 2007, at her home. Mrs. Hamblett was born March 28, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of Leo and Mildred (Masterson) Gerber. On June 24, 1944, she married Robert Hamblett, who predeceased her on December 26, 1986. She graduated from Syracuse University in New York. She was an elementary school teacher in Newport for many years. She held memberships with the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Retired Teachers Association, and the United Church of Newport. She was a volunteer for North Country Hospital, the Hospice Hearts and Hands, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her sons: David TarltonHamblett and his wife, Patricia, of Estero, Florida, Robert Bruce Hamblett of Newport, and Douglas Phillips-Hamblett and his wife, Harriette, of Newport; by grandchildren: Jonathan David Hamblett and his wife, Kimberly, Natalie Phillips-Hamblett, Jennifer Hamblett, and Katherine Phillips-Hamblett; and by three great-grandchildren: MacKenzie, Sidney, and Coleson. She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Lee Gerber. A memorial service was held October 25 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment followed in PineGroveCemetery in Newport. , 65, of Derby died peacefully October 25, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Fortin was born June 24, 1942, in Newport, a daughter of Dennis and Rose (Davio) Durocher. On May 13, 1961, she married Raymond Fortin, who survives her. She was employed by the state of Vermont in the education department as a coordinator for special needs children. She enjoyed horses, cats, dogs, and arts and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Fortin, of Derby; by children: Denis Fortin of Morgan, Dan Fortin and his wife, Linda, of Troy, Teresa Nelson of Derby, Lori Fortin of Johnson, Carole Fortin and her fiancé, Robert Desrochers, of Newport, and Debra Beauchesne and her husband, Ron, of Derby; by grandchildren: Chelsea, Brandon, Casey, and Addison Fortin, Brooke and Brock Fortin, Douglas, Dylan, and Dale Nelson, Rebecca Sweeney, Mechelle, Timmy, and Anna Bernier, Marissa Fortin, and Joni, Olive, and Opal Beauchesne; by one great-grandchild, Isaac McDonald; by a brother, Lawrence Durocher, and his wife, Gloria, of Ft. Pierce, Florida; by sisters Joyce Before and her husband, Vincent, of West Burke and Christine Fortin and her husband, Robert, of Derby; and by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held October 29 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Edward's Cemetery in Derby Line.
