, 97, a lifelong resident of Littleton, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, N.H. Marion was born March 1, 1906, in the home of her parents, Wilbur W. Craigie Sr. and Agnes (Nicholson) Craigie. She attended area schools and was a graduate of Littleton High School, Class of 1924. Prior to her retirement in 1968, she was the secretary and treasurer for the Littleton superintendent of schools for 42 years. Surviving family members include her sister-in-law, Dorothy A. Craigie; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Roger F. Howland, in 1998; by two brothers, Wilbur W. Craigie Jr., and Nichol D. Craigie; and three sisters, Alda C. Young, Margaret C. Beere, and Isabel C. Harrington. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 27, at the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton.

48, of 789 Railroad St., St. Johnsbury, passed away suddenly early Saturday, May 31, 2003. He was born in St. Johnsbury Sept. 13, 1954, the son of A. Ray and Margaret (Hayes) Kittredge. He was a 1972 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. After operating Ideal Upholstery and the Benjamin Moore Paint Store on Eastern Avenue, Ronnie did business as R & L Enterprises, which entailed his upholstery business, painting, snow removal, rental properties, fire apparatus sales, and a pavement marking business which he operated all over New Hampshire and Vermont, and serviced several area towns' pavement marking needs. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Kittredge; two daughters, Kelly and Kari Kittredge of St. Johnsbury; his companion, Kathleen Renna of St. Johnsbury; one brother, William Kittredge and wife Debbie of Danville; two sisters, Barbara Russell and husband Mark of East Concord, and Sandra Coons and husband Rick of Waterford; a brother-in-law, David Russell of St. Johnsbury; his paternal aunt, Eunice Barnett; maternal uncle, Harry Hayes; maternal aunt, Margaret Hayes; two nieces and six nephews; and by his beloved German shepherd, Max. He was predeceased by a maternal aunt, Pauline Murphy Lacroix, just this past May 18; his father, A. Ray Kittredge, in February 1993, and by an infant sister, Susan Rae. Visiting hours will be held this evening, Monday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3, at 11 a.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church on Central Street in St. Johnsbury. , 87, of Bethlehem, N.H., passed away May 28, 2003, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H. Mary was born March 30, 1916, a daughter to James and Marcella (Mickey) Slavin in Flushing, N.Y. She worked as a seamstress for the S. Augustine Company. Mary was self-employed as a hair dresser in Bayshore, N.Y., and was a riveter during World War II. Surviving family members include one daughter, Barbara Ferringo of Bethlehem; one son, Clem Hubert of Whitefield; four grandchildren, Michael and Steven Hubert of Hood River, Ore., and Dawn Demers and Joseph Ferringo of Bethlehem; and two great-grandchildren, Liam and Aidan Demers of Bethlehem. Her husband, Archie Hubert, predeceased her. Graveside funeral services were held May 30 in the Maple Street Cemetery in Bethlehem.

, 74, of the Colonial Senior Apartments, 17 Church St., St. Johnsbury, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born Dec. 22, 1928 in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of the late Laurel and Gladys (Finn) Boelter. She earned a master's degree from the University of Alabama. On June 7, 1949, she married Don. C. Rogers of Chicago, Ill.; he predeceased her March 19, 1992. She was a Spanish professor and taught at Athens State College, Athens, Ala., for 15 years, and for the Department of Defense Dependents School for four years. She retired from teaching in 1983. She volunteered for 20 years with the USO and ACS as a tour guide for American military families through Europe. In March, 1999, she moved to East Burke and volunteered her time to the Lyndonville Food Shelf. She was a board member at the Darling Inn Meal Site. She attended the Cobleigh Library story hour and the Sutton Freewill Baptist Church with her daughter Holly and two grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Richard Boelter of Bella Vista, Ark.; her children, Judy Rogers of East Windsor, N.J., Deborah Rogers Wills of Hartselle, Ala., Dr. Robin Rogers of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Holly Rogers Goodwin of West Burke; and by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m., at the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Barbara Dwyer officiating. , 54, of 316 Last Road in Cabot, passed away Sunday morning, June 1, 2003, at her home. She was in the arms of her loving family, just as the birds were heralding the coming day with the cool mountain air washing over her and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata playing softly, when she, our angel on loan, ascended. Denise was born July 13, 1948, in Waterbury, Conn. She was the firstborn of Estelle (Ricard) Lamy and the late Ernest Lamy of Watertown, Conn. In 1983 Denise and her family moved to Cabot. She worked as school secretary at the Cabot School from 1983 to 1989, and at the Vermont Center for Independent Living in Montpelier from 1989 to 2002. From 2001 until she became ill in the fall of 2002, she worked for Edward Jones Investments in Barre. Denise was an active member of the Cabot community and an avid fan of the Cabot Huskies. Her greatest love was her family. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, David B. Creighton; four daughters, Nicole Creighton Bradshaw of Cabot, Victoria Hill and husband Aaron Hill of Hardwick, Sarah Creighton of Barre, and Emily Rose Creighton of Cabot; three granddaughters, Lillian and Abigail Bradshaw of Cabot, and Letitia Hill of Hardwick, and a grandson Hill on the way; her mother, Estelle Lamy of Watertown, Conn.; her sisters, Lucille Ayotte, Christine Stanley, Claire Brickett and Linda Linberg, and brothers, Richard Lamy and Marcel Lamy, all of Connecticut; and 22 nieces and nephews. Denise loved being with her family and found great delight in her grandchildren. She found peace in her home on the hill. She enjoyed nature and recently rose from her sickbed like a little girl to watch a bear explore the yard under a full moon. She was a wonderful cook and always had a table full of family and friends. Denise was a "kind gentle soul who lived by the side of the road and was a friend to man." A funeral service is planned for Saturday, June 7, at 1 p.m., at the Cabot United Church, with interment following at the Cabot Plains Cemetery. , formerly of Main Street in St. Johnsbury, passed away at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, Sunday evening, June 1, 2003. He was born in St. Johnsbury, July 13, 1921, the son of Wilbur and Edith (Keeler) Farr. Les graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for several years at the Citizens Savings Bank in St. Johnsbury. Les was employed by the town of St. Johnsbury for 33 years and retired as an assistant town clerk to Norman Sleeper. He served his country during World War II at Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater. He was active in both the Lyndonville VFW and American Legion posts and coordinated veterans' bus trips to the VA Complex in White River Junction. He enjoyed many summers spent at Joe's Pond. He is survived by his wife, Blanche (Barber) Farr, who resides at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center; one brother, Collins J. Farr of the Canterbury Inn of St. Johnsbury; and three nieces and two nephews. Services will be held Thursday, June 5, at 2 p.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home with Glenn A. Goodrich, bishop of the Lyndonville ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at 2:45 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. , 63, of Coventry, passed away at her home, Sunday, June 1, 2003. She was born in Holland, Vt., Dec. 15, 1939, the daughter of John and Earnestine (Baraw) Woodard. Carolyn graduated from Newport Center High School and worked for 35 years as the advertising coordinator at the Newport Daily Express. She loved spending time with her family and organizing family gatherings, and attending her grandchildren's functions. She also enjoyed her day trips with her companion, Dean. Carolyn was known for her positive, upbeat attitude, and was always able to find something positive in a bad situation and something to learn from it. Carolyn was a very caring person and was always one of the first to give people a helping hand. She was an active member of the Coventry Congregational Church. On April 9, 1960, Carolyn married John Blake, who predeceased her on April 17, 1994. , a longtime resident of St. Johnsbury, passed away at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, Monday morning, June 2, 2003. He was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Medford, Mass., the son of Rudolph Ray and May Estelle (Julian) Butler. Julian was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, honorably discharged in February 1946. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and American Area Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal. Prior to enlistment in the Navy, he honorably served in the U.S. Army for six months before being called home to assist his family. He was a letter carrier in St. Johnsbury for many years. After his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service he drove a school bus for the St. Johnsbury School System. He was a member of Grace United Metehodist Church, and graciously served his church, his family and his friends all of his life. He married Marion Ethel Suitor in 1942; she passed away in December 2001. His survivors include two daughters and their families, Lynne and Roy Kowski of Barre, and Joyce and David Pennaman of Madisonville, Ky.; grandchildren Kris and Karla Jurentkuff of Barre, Julie (Jurentkuff) and Michael Thresher of Danville, Jerry Pennaman and wife Christina of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary, Michelle, Claire and Daniel Pennaman of Madisonville, Ky.; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Kassandra Thresher of Danville; and his brother, Russell T. Butler and wife Lois of Groton and their children, Laurie, Nathan and David. , 51, of Greensboro, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the home he built, after living with cancer for eight years. He was born June 23, 1951 in St. Johnsbury, the son of Donald M. and Madeline (Greaves) Gebbie. He attended Greensboro High School, and graduated in 1969 as valedictorian of his class at Lamoille Union High School in Hyde Park. He continued his education at Johnson State College. On May 31, 1980, he married Aileen Theresa Shea in Bennington. He was first employed by his father, on the family-operated dairy farm. In 1980 he became one of the fifth generation owners of the Maplehurst Farm in Greensboro. In 1988 he sold his investment in the farm and became involved in landscaping, bush hogging, backhoe work and repair work for area residents. He attended St. Michael's Church in Greensboro Bend, was a member of the Lakeview Union School Board, and was chair of the Greensboro Conservation Commission. He was a substitute at Hazen Union School for several years. He enjoyed continuing his family's tradition of sugaring each spring. Other enjoyments included attending his children's school activities, and all kinds of repair work. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Aileen Gebbie; his mother, Madeline Gebbie; a daughter, Elizabeth Gebbie; three sons, Christopher, Patrick and Kevin Gebbie, all of Greensboro; a brother, Peter Gebbie of Greensboro; and two sisters, Patricia Mercier of Greensboro, and Susan Locke of East Albany; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. , 79, of Bayley Hazen Road, Peacham, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Johnsbury after a long illness. He was born in Peacham Jan. 6, 1924, the son of Venan H. and Mary (Dutton) Bean. Bob graduated from Cabot High School, Cabot. He was a Star Route mail carrier, starting in St. Johnsbury, Passumpsic, Barnet and then to Peacham. He did post office box delivery from Barnet to Peacham. He delivered The Caledonian-Record to the general stores in Barnet, West Barnet, South Peacham and Peacham. He was sexton of the Peacham Cemetery from 1973-1995, and a former president, director and lifetime member of the Forest and Stream Club. Bob was a very active member of the Bayley Hazen Snowmobile Club and director of the Snowmobile Trail Masters, Caledonia County; groomed snowmobile trails; was director of the Corridor Trails Club for Caledonia County; was in charge of Fire District No. 1; a member of the Washburn Lodge F & AM 92 of Danville; a member of BPOE 1343, St. Johnsbury; a member of the Moose Club 1779, St. Johnsbury; and a member of Eastern Star, Danville. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association; the Stevens Valley Men's Club, Peacham; the Peacham Congregational Church; and a former member and fire chief of the Peacham Fire Department. He was town lister of Peacham and had over 20 years of service to the town of Peacham. He loved to hunt, fish and do some trapping; was an avid bowler, horseshoe player, golfer and gardener; and a member of the Clan MacBean Inc. Surviving relatives include his wife of 57 years, Emma (Royston) Bean of Peacham; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Faris and husband Tony of Barnet, and Mrs. Beverly Terrill and husband William J. of St. Johnsbury; two sons, Richard R. Bean and wife Patsy of Dover, N.H., and Stephen R. Bean and wife Cathryn of Waterford; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth L. Bean of Peacham; one sister, Luella M. Robinson of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Venan H. Bean Jr. in 2000. 50, of North Danville, died suddenly at his home, Sunday evening, June 1, 2003. He was born Dec. 8, 1952 in St. Johnsbury, the loving son of Leon S. and Anna M. (Kittredge) McFarland. A 1970 graduate of Danville High School, he also graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1974. Melvin had been a mechanical engineer at EHV-Weidmann Industries in St. Johnsbury for the past 27 years. He was also a firefighter with the Danville Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, and was a member of the BPOE (Elks) Lodge 1343 in St. Johnsbury. An avid outdoorsman, Mel enjoyed hunting and fishing. Working on his 1934 Plymouth Coupe and going to antique car flea markets and car shows brought him much pleasure. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Newark, playing cards with his friends and family, and attending family gatherings at the family farm. He was always willing to help family and friends whenever the need arose. Most of all, he was proud of his daughter Julie, and all of her accomplishments. Survivors include his parents, of North Danville; his daughter, Julie Ann McFarland and her companion Travis Casey of Danville; two sisters and their husbands, Patricia and Leo Smith of Tariffville, Conn., and Nancy and Randy Carpenter of St. Johnsbury; two brothers, Dennis McFarland and wife Socorro of Douglasville, Ga., and Brian McFarland of Danville; his former wife and family friend, Donna (Charron) McFarland of Lyndonville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and good friends, as well as his EHV family. , 81, of Waterford, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003. He was a U.S. Air Corps veteran of World War II. During an assigned mission, he was taken prisoner of war in Germany. In 1945, he was liberated. His career included many successful positions that spanned many phases from technology, special projects, management, etc. He truly was a "man of many hats" even as a mentor for the young people as well as for his employees. He enriched the lives of his many acquaintances. Mr. Wasniak is survived by Dorothy (Yahnak) Wasniak, his wife of 54 years; and his brother, Bernard Wasniak of Cleveland, Ohio. , 82, who retired as an English teacher at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pa., died Monday, June 2, 2003. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a longtime resident of the Philadelphia area and East Lyndon, Vt., he moved to Tallahassee, Fla., in 2001. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Fox Chase Memorial Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and attended Faith Presbyterian in Tallahassee. Survivors include two sons, Theodore P. Baker and Frederick M. Baker II, both of Tallahassee; and three grandchildren, Carolyn Baker of Chapel Hill, N.C., Jean Baker of Chicago, and Anne Baker of New York City, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Kroekel Baker, in 1994. He spent his growing-up years in Springfield, and served in the U.S. Army. He married Noreen Applebee, worked as a packer at Fairbanks for 21 years, and he enjoyed books and computers. Jon is survived by his wife Noreen; two children and their spouses, Craig A. Benjamin and wife Karri, and Erica Ann Morrison and husband Jonathan, and two grandchildren, Cara and Kaylin, all of St. Johnsbury; two brothers, Steve Benjamin of Florida, and David Benjamin of Springfield, Vt. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Thomas Benjamin. Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home. , 48, was taken from her family and friends, Sunday, June 1, 2003. She was born to Camille and Jeanne Lamothe of St. Johnsbury, May 9, 1955. She was the sixth and youngest born, the "baby" of the family. Karen excelled in all she attempted, be it hunting, school or work. After earning many honors in various competitions, she graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1973. She was a world traveler, visiting her brother who was stationed in Hawaii, and traveling to Europe to visit England, Italy, the Netherlands and France. While doing all this, she had a daughter, Alina, born in 1978. Alina was the focus and pride of her life. Karen worked at The Caledonian-Record, Maple Grove Farms Inc., UPS and EHV-Weidmann Industries. She was a consummate outdoorsman -- an avid hunter of deer and wild turkeys, and she enjoyed fishing, canoeing, snowshoeing, swimming and camping. Karen traveled the road of life with a twinkle in her eyes, a mischievous grin and a carefree spirit. Her family will always remember her this way. She is survived by her daughter, Alina, of Las Vegas, Nev.; her mother, Jeanne M. Lamothe of St. Johnsbury; and her sister and brothers, Elaine Evans and husband William of St. Johnsbury, Dennis Lamothe and wife Dianne of St. Johnsbury, David Lamothe and wife Irene of Castleton, and Richard Lamothe and wife Anita of Live Oak, Texas. She was predeceased by a brother, Paul J. Lamothe, and her father, Camille G. Lamothe. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m., at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. , 75, of Lyndonville, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born Jan. 17, 1928 in Coventry. She loved horses, dogs and all other animals. She was a member of the Mounted Auxiliary Police. During her lifetime she worked on a farm, as a waitress, at Glovers in St. Johnsbury, in a shoe shop, as a Fuller Brush salesperson, at Joe's Bakery, and in health care. She is survived by her husband, Ward Bumps of Lyndonville, whom she married on Jan. 25, 1967; four daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Richard Davis of East Haven, Sherry and Richard Barber of Wheelock, Linda and Scott Rivers of East Haven, and Carole Sue Camber of Sutton; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Cutting of Irasburg, and Alton Cutting and wife Laura of Florida; several nieces and nephews; three stepsons, Wayne Bumps of Keene, N.H., Leonard Bumps and wife Sue of Bakersfield, Calif., and David Bumps of Keene, N.H.; and three step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Robinson, on April 11, 2002. There will be no calling hours. , 36, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in Mullica Hill, N.J. He was born July 31, 1966 in Townsend, Vt., the beloved son of William Cole of Lyndonville and Christine (Rivers) and Robert McGivern of Newark. A 1984 graduate of North Country Union High School in Newport, he served in the U.S. Navy actively for five years, and in the reserves for four years. He was a master electrician by trade but also successful in every endeavor. He was predeceased by a brother, William Christopher Cole, in 1967; by his first wife, Laura Mangino, in 1995; and his grandparents, Ernest and Ada Rivers and Harold and Alta Cole. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cole, son David Hagerty Cole and daughter Julianne Hagerty Cole, all of Mullica Hill, N.J.; two sisters, Brenda (Cole) Bedor and husband Richard of St. Johnsbury, and Julia Hodgdon and husband Lance of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a brother, Kevin Cole and companion Fallon Bean of Lyndonville; a stepsister, Rosalie Putnam of Virginia; three stepbrothers, Eric, Brian and Keith McGivern of Newport; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. , 63, of North Troy, passed away suddenly in Lebanon, N.H., Friday, June 6, following a long illness with cancer. She was born in Wolcott Jan. 12, 1940, the daughter of Roland Sr. and Bessie (Moody) Denton. Geneva worked as a cashier for the B & D Supermarket in North Troy for the past sixteen years. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. On Nov. 14, 1958, Geneva married Dorio Roberts Sr., who survives her. , 73, died unexpectedly Friday June 6, 2003, at her home in Greensboro. She was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Rumford, Maine, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Leonie (Roberts) Chaloux. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Newport, and graduated from Greensboro High School, Class of 1948. She married Erwin Harvey Salls Sr., Sept. 11, 1948, in Hardwick. In 1951, she and her husband purchased a family dairy farm in North Greensboro, where she has made her home. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Greensboro Bend, a member and past vice president of the Greensboro Alumni Association. She enjoyed her family, attending her grandchildren's school activities, and tending her flower garden. Surivors include six children, Linda Dimick and companion Alan Lakin of Moretown, Erwin Salls Jr. and wife Linda of Greensboro, Wilfred Salls and companion Dusty Tucker of Greensboro, Leonia Pike and husband Fred of Cabot, Edward Salls of Johnson, and Rose Bothfeld and husband Walter Jr. of Cabot; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, three aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 91, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Vt., following complications from hip surgery. She was born in Clifton, N.J., June 19, 1911. After attending high school she became a registered nurse at Passaic General Hospital. In 1933 she married Robert B. Gaston of Passaic, N.J. In 1942 they moved to Washington, D.C., and raised their four children. After her husband's retirement from the federal government in 1971, they moved to West Barnet, where they had summered since 1949. There she became the tax collector for the Barnet township. After her husband died in 1986, she lived in St. Johnsbury and later in Stowe. Alma is survived by four children, Janet Murphy of Mclean, Va., Robert T. Gaston of Montpelier, Fred Gaston of Clarksville, Va., and Mary Duling of Atherton, Calif.; a sister, Janet Royce of Wall Township, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 21, at 11 a.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Burial will be private. , 70, of South Lunenburg Road, Lunenburg, died at her home, Saturday, June 7, 2003. Mrs. Hartshorn was born in Canaan, July 3, 1932, the daughter of William and Ola (Bryan) Douglas. She was later raised in Groveton, N.H., where she was a 1951 graduate of Groveton High School. Over the years she and her family resided in Littleton, Concord, and eventually Lunenburg. During that time she was employed at several area mills. Known by her family as "Nan," she was a courageous woman who always believed that it was better to laugh than cry. She was so proud of her family and always saw the best in everyone. She loved her flowers, going for rides, playing bingo, doing Avon and searching for bargains. Family members include her children, along with their spouses or companions, Judith L. Maynard and Frank of Colchester, Douglas L. Hartshorn and Tracy of Waterford, Peggy L. Deth and Paul of South Wheelock, Cathy L. Hartshorn and Trevor of Barre, Penny A. McKinnon and Chuck of Littleton, and Craig W. Hartshorn and Louise of Concord; 10 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne L. Hartshorn, Aug. 19, 1989, and her very special basset, Annie. He was born in Meriden, Conn., and graduated from Southington High School and Simmons Mortuary College in Syracuse, N.Y. He was a licensed funeral director in Vermont and Florida. He lived in Vermont from 1971 to 1990. He served in the Lyndonville, Middlebury and Burlington areas. In 1990 he moved to Florida and served in the Ruskin, Brandon, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Spring Hill areas. While in Lyndonville, he was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lyndonville, Lyndonville Fire Department, and Lions and Rotary Clubs. He had been a member of the Vermont Restaurant Association, the Vermont and Florida Funeral Directors Associations and the National Funeral Directors Association. He is survived by his parents, Robert C. and Virginia Bushnell Sr. of Southington, Conn.; a sister, Brenda Baran of Plantsville, Conn.; a brother, Robert C. , 54, of Chocorua, N.H., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at his home. Born in Whitefield, the son of Lyle and Hilda (Perkins) Huntoon, he grew up in Whitefield and had lived in Madison, N.H. for five years before moving to Chocorua in 1989. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Huntoon had been a licensed plumber for several years prior to becoming a New Hampshire state trooper in 1982. During his career as a trooper he achieved the rank of Corporal and received numerous commendations for outstanding service to the state of New Hampshire. He retired from Troop E in Tamworth in 2000. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and fly tier. Wayne also enjoyed restoring old cars, and he loved his golden retriever, Casey. The family includes his wife, Jean (Leighton) Huntoon of Chocorua; his daughter, Julie A. Huntoon of Milford, N.H.; three step-daughters, Elizabeth D. Dinwoodie of Allenstown, N.H., Kimberlee D. Mancuso of Paris, Ky., and Melissa Dionne of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Patricia Harris of St. Johnsbury, and Lilah Reis of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. , 90, a resident of the Belaire Convalescent Center in Newport, and former resident of Shaftsbury, Vt., died Tuesday afternoon, June 10, 2003 in Newport. She was born in Berkeley, Calif., June 22, 1912, and was the daughter of John H. and Mary E. (Jewett) Brooks Jr. She received her education in California. She moved to Vermont in 1967 and had previously resided in North Tonowanda, N.Y. and Worcester, Mass. Mrs. Nelson enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. She is survived by her husband, Paul Nelson of Newport; three sons, Douglas Francis of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Donald Francis of Barnet, and Raymond Francis of Universal City, Texas; seven grandchildren, Steven, Vronda, Raymond Jr., Richard, Barbara, Brian and Donald-John; and a step-daughter, Laura Cain of Morgan. She was predeceased by her first husband, Alden L. Francis, and one brother, J. Hapgood Brooks. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday afternoon, June 14, at 2 p.m., at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 W. Main St., Bennington, with the Rev. Penny Rich-Smith, pastor of the North Bennington Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will take place in the family lot in Hope Cemetery in Worcester, Mass., privately. , 91, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2003. Known to all as "Chappy," he was born and raised in Manchester, N.H., graduated from St. Augustine High School, and attended New Hampshire College, pursuing business courses. He trained as a printer and, in addition to working for the Union Leader for several years, started his own print shop that included the publishing of a French newspaper. After that, he pursued several business adventures including the establishment of a club on the east side of Manchester, land development, and the setting up of an independent gas station, Chappy's, located on South Willow Street. He had an avid interest in athletics and sports, particularly horse racing. He was a certified horse trainer, and owned and raced many horses over the years, primarily at Rockingham Park. His family includes his wife of 65 years, Bernadette (Laflamme); three daughters, Suzanne Morley of Franconia, Elaine Gould and Michelle Cronin, both of Manchester; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Raymond, in 1953. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, June 16, at 10 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima in Littleton, with the Rev. Father Joseph Klatka officiating. Interment will take place at a later date, in Manchester.

, 85, of 91 Gilford Ave., Laconia, N.H., went on to be with our Lord and his loving wife, Phyllis (Mudgett) Babcock, on Saturday, June 14, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born Feb. 15, 1918 in Plymouth, N.H., the son of John C. and Linda (Dunklee) Babcock. He was a graduate of Manchester Central High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a lifelong resident of New England, where he lived from Maine to Pennsylvania, working in the beef industry for Wilson Beef as a manager. He was a member of the Lynde Lodge 174, Hermon, Maine; the Kora Temple of Lewiston, Maine; VFW Post 1670, Laconia; and the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Penacook, N.H. John was a very caring and giving man who always had a smile and a good word for anyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all those he leaves behind, but his love and our memories will live on forever. John is survived by his daughter, Linda Albertson of Laconia, N.H.; his son, John C. Babcock III of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren, John C. Babcock and Ross Babcock, both of El Paso, Texas, Barry J. Setser of Pasadena, Md., Susan E. , 90, formerly of Lincoln House, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at his home at Joe's Pond in Cabot. He was born in Frasne, France, July 3, 1912, the son of Auguste and Ernestine (Barthelet) Chatot. He attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School, Class of 1930. Following graduation, he began his long association with the Barre granite industry, first as a granite polisher for the former Jones Brothers' Granite Company and in 1946 he and his partner John Leppanen purchased the North Barre Granite Company. Following Mr. Leppanen's retirement in 1965, Mr. Chatot became sole owner and operator of the company until his retirement in 1982, when he sold the business to his daughter Judee Chatot-Travis and nephews Charles Chatot, who continue to operate the company today. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy service during World War II as a Seabee, enlisting in 1944, serving on the Island of Guam in the Pacific Theater of Operations, and was discharged in 1946. Mr. Chatot was an active and dedicated participant for many years in the Barre area business, community, political and service sectors, having been a member of the Barre Granite Association of which he had been a director and chairman of numerous working committees; a member of the North American Monument Builders Association; member and past director of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the BARRE Housing Authority for 18 years; and a Democratic Party activist at the city, county, state and national level. Mr. Chatot had been both a delegate and alternate to several national conventions; appointed by former Gov. Philip Hoff to the State Board of Forest and Parks where he served for many years; Barre Justice of the Peace for 27 years; Barre Rotary Club since 1958. He served as Rotary Club president in 1965-66 and was district governor in 1980-81. He was also a Paul Harris fellow. He belonged to the Central Vermont Hospital 200 Club, of which he was a founding member and had served a term as president. Following his retirement, Mr. Chatot had spent several years as a volunteer at the hospital. Other memberships include St. Monica's Church; 4th degree knight, Bishop Brady Council K of C; Barre Canadian Club; Mutuo Inc., St. Andrew's Society of Burlington; Granite Masonic Lodge 35; Barre Council 22R and SM; Granite Chapter 26 RAM; St. Aldemar Commander 11 K.T.; all of Barre; and Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple 3 of Montpelier. Mr. Chatot was a skilled amateur photographer, an accomplished skier belonging to the 70-plus club of Vermont; and an avid painter, belonging to the Barre Paletteers. He enjoyed golfing, and was past president of the Barre Country Club; and a gentleman farmer who liked to mow his fields with his Massey-Ferguson tractor. He spent many summers with his family at his cottage on Joe's Pond. He was a past president of the Joe's Pond Association and served on numerous association committees. On Oct. 30, 1936 he married Elizabeth Perreault in St. Monica's Church. She died in 1949. On Nov. 25, 1950 he married Mary Allison Simpson in St. Monica's Church. They worked very closely together in his various civic, business, political and fraternal affairs until her death on Dec. 30, 1992. , 88, died peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, June 12, 2003. Sylvia spent her last 20 years living on Vail Hill in Lyndonville with her daughter Elizabeth. He husband of 49 years, Victor, predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth, Kathryn and Clifford; her grandchildren; Lorraine, Benjamin and Sarah; and her great-grandchildren, Bennett, Jaslyn and Campbell (due any minute now). Sylvia graduated with honors from Hunter College in New York City, N.Y. She went directly into research at the Albert Einstein Facility, where she did research on vitamin K and the early attempts at a polio vaccine, in close proximity to the great man. She went on to get her first master's degree, in early childhood education, at Bank Street College, and she started one of the first cooperative nursery schools in New York City. She went on to teach at Vassar College Summer Institute. Later, she acquired master's degrees in chemistry, physiology, geology, genetics, biology and physics. She continued teaching science in Stamford, Conn., and then in several high schools, culminating at Milton High School in Massachusetts, where she received the Teacher of the Year Award. She inspired her students to go on the become research scientists, medical doctors and nurses, and she taught future nurses at Harvard University. When she arrived in Lyndonville 20 years ago she tutored physically and emotionally handicapped youngsters, empowering and encouraging them to stay in school. She was a supporter of the library, a patron of the arts and a woman curious about the world until her death. Recently, she was studying string theory and quantum physics. She was a crusader for women's rights and worked for equality and peace until her death. Sylvia used her spare time to crochet baby blankets for AIDS newborns. She inspired a love of learning and encouraged all who crossed her path including this writer. Contributions in her memory may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

, of Pasadena, Calif., known to family and friends as "Zack," departed this life on Wednesday, June 11, 2003. She was born April 11, 1908 in Lancaster, N.H., and spent her early years in the area. She attended the University of Vermont, receiving a bachelor's degree in education, and became a school teacher. She met and married Edward Shweitzer during that time and their only son Stephen was born. In 1941 the family moved to Pasadena. Elzada obtained a master's degree in education from the University of Southern California. Her husband Edward preceded her in death in 1964. She leaves to mourn her passing, son Stephen of Pasadena, Calif.; grandsons Ethan and Kyle of Altadena, Calif.; cousins Pat and Kevin Blakely of Lancaster and Bayonne, N.J., respectively; friends and neighbors at the Villa Gardens Retirement Community and throughout the greater Southern California area. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 18, at 10 a.m., at the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster. The Rev. John C. Gregory of Whitefield will officiate.

, 78, of Route 3 North, Twin Mountain, N.H., passed away at the Littleton Regional Hospital on Sunday, June 15, 2003, following a brief illness. She was born in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Paul and Anna (Bosse) Kowalewski, and emigrated to the United States in 1948. She had resided in Twin Mountain ever since, working in many local businesses prior to becoming a full-time homemaker. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at her home. Her many hobbies included sewing, watching soap operas, reading and sharing scratch-tickets and megabuck tickets. She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Monahan, in 1951; and her last husband, Harold Wright, in 1964. She is survived by two sons, Donald Monahan of Twin Mountain, and Peter and Cathy Wright of Twin Mountain; two daughters, Carol and Rick Goehring of St. Johnsbury, and Heidi and Paul Harvey of Littleton; nine grandchildren, Todd and Tyler Wright, Krista Lawrence, Keith and Kevin Monahan, Gwendolyn and Shannon Goehring, and Lucas and Jessica Harvey; and five great-grandchildren, Lily Monahan, Jake Lawrence, Haley Goehring, Kristina Goehring and Justice Aldrich. , 78, of Mt. Pleasant Trailer Park, St. Johnsbury, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 16, 2003 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born May 11, 1925 in Roxton Pond, Canada, the daughter of Ernest and Delphine (Derosier) Choquette. A graduate of the Hardwick school system, she had worked at Glovers for several years. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. Gertrude was a devoted mother; she loved being with her family, cookouts, gardening, yard sales and cooking. On Jan. 16, 1945, she married Denis A. , longtime St. Johnsbury elementary school teacher, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2003 at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Rutland July 18, 1914, the daughter of Warren H. and Marion (Noyes) Whitney. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Harry B. Whitney and Warren Howard Whitney. She married Howard Remick July 2, 1938; he predeceased her June 14, 1978. On Dec. 8, 1984 she married Wallace Clifford. Mrs. Clifford retired in June 1979 after teaching for nearly 31 years. Then known as Mrs. Remick, she was an elementary school teacher for 26 years at the Summer Street and Frank R. Adams schools in St. Johnsbury. Arda had resided at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center since November 2000. She enjoyed visits with family and friends and appreciated the kind and professional staff of the center. She became a member of South Congregational Church in 1940 and was active in the church's Searchlight and 59'ers committees. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma; Caledonia-Southern Essex Retired Teachers Association; the Vermont Retired Teachers Association; the St. Johnsbury College Club; and AARP. She is survived by her loving husband, Wallace L. Clifford, who resides with son Terry (1618 McReynolds Road, Danville, VT 05828); two daughters, Dorothy R. Nelson and husband Keith Welby of Sanford, N.C., and Elizabeth R. Yoder and husband Gary of Sanford, N.C. (633 Fairway Drive, 27330); a step-son, Terry M. , beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, died June 14, 2003 after a long struggle with emphysema. She was 77. She will be missed for her enthusiasm, her sense of humor, her enjoyment of simple things, her love of family, friends and good stories. Doris was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in North Walpole, N.H., the daughter of Simon and Regina Conway. She spent her early years in North Walpole and Barnet, where her father was part of the crew that built the Comerford Dam. She attended schools in Barnet and later Keene, N.H. She married Edgerton Elliott on June 11, 1946, and they had one daughter. Doris spent the first years of her married life in Seattle, Wash., and Burlington, Vt., while her husband completed his service in the U.S. Army and pursued his education at the University of Vermont. In 1953 the Elliotts returned to the family farm in St. Johnsbury. Doris helped to run the dairy farm and to care for her father-in-law. She loved working hard, being outdoors and making the farm a gathering place for family and friends. She milked cows, raked hay first with Lil, the horse, and later with a tractor. She gathered sap during sugaring, mended fences, wallpapered, painted, and cooked up large dinners for whoever happened to be at the farm. When a cow had her calf in some hidden spot in the back pasture, Doris was the one who could find it. Facing the bulk-tank ultimatum in 1963, the Elliotts sold the cows and gave up farming. For the next several years, Doris worked at various jobs in St. Johnsbury and Lyndonville, continuing to throw herself enthusiastically into whatever she was doing, whether it was working as a waitress or nurse's aide. From 1967 to 1969, Doris worked in East Lansing, Michigan, where her husband was pursuing a master's degree. During that time she bought a Karmann Ghia convertible, and for years she derived a lot of pleasure from driving the sporty little car. It now belongs to her grandson, who has restored it to its original beauty. She had good rapport with children and took care of many, including her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed traveling during her retirement until ill health ended her journeys. Even so, dependent upon an oxygen tank and with limited mobility, she never lost her good humor, her love of storytelling or her good memory. She was the recognized authority on the past 50 years of family history. She made friends wherever she went, including at the hospital during her last illness. Doris is survived by her husband of 57 years, Edgie, of St. Johnsbury; her daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and John Emery of St. Johnsbury; four grandchildren, Tara Hemond and husband Mark of Burke; John Emery and wife Mary of Albany, N.Y.; Richard Emery and wife Sara, of Valrico, Fla.; and Shannon Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven great-grandchildren and another due in August; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Lois Conway of Lincoln, N.H.; a sister, Betty Lou Gleason of Orange, Mass.; a sister-in-law, June Elliott of St. Johnsbury; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers, and several sisters- and brothers-in-law. The family will gather for a celebration of Doris' life. After cremation, Doris' remains will be returned to the hills on her beloved farm.

, 91, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Vt., following complications from hip surgery. She was born in Clifton, N.J., June 19, 1911. After attending high school she became a registered nurse at Passaic General Hospital. In 1933 she married Robert B. Gaston of Passaic, N.J. In 1942 they moved to Washington, D.C., and raised their four children. After her husband's retirement from the federal government in 1971, they moved to West Barnet, where they had summered since 1949. There she became the tax collector for the Barnet township. After her husband died in 1986, she lived in St. Johnsbury and later in Stowe. Alma is survived by four children, Janet Murphy of Mclean, Va., Robert T. Gaston of Montpelier, Fred Gaston of Clarksville, Va., and Mary Duling of Atherton, Calif.; a sister, Janet Royce of Wall Township, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 21, at 11 a.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Alma be remembered with a contribution to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

, 57, of Littleton, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003 in his home with his family, after a long battle with cancer. Dennis was born in Littleton, May 4, 1946, a son of Fred and Pearl (Peterson) Parker. He was most affectionately known as the "Frosty Man" who drove the sharp classic old car. He married his wife of 39 years on June 21, 1964. Dennis was a local businessman, having operated Fred's Linoleum Shop, before purchasing the Frosty Whip Dairy Bar. He operated the dairy bar for over 15 years, and it continues to be operated by his daughter, Lorisa, today. He was an avid outdoorsman and was well-known in the community for his humorous jokes he shared with many. Surviving family consists of his wife, Laura Lee (Varney) Parker of Littleton; one son, Shane Parker and Jen of Dalton; three daughters, Michelle Rodas and Ernesto of Belchertown, Mass., Lorisa Parker and Gary Guyer of Littleton, and Misty Parker of Littleton; one sister, Stella Lapanne of Portsmouth, N.H.; 10 grandchildren, Cara Ann Parker, Keith Victor Parker, Katelynn Ann Wright, Jeremy Earl Coffin, Andrew Wayne Wright Jr., Papcelie Mabel Rodas, Jasmin Priscilla Rodas, Freddie Alexander Vasquez, George Shane Parker, Patiance Saralee Robinson; and special companions Jack and Nemo. He was predeceased by one brother, Donald Parker, and one sister, Sally Greer. At the request of the family there will be no calling hours, and the memorial service will be considered casual attire. 79, of Passumpsic, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born March 14, 1924 in Concord, Vt., the son of the late Ray W. and Ina (Rollins) Young. In 1948 Bion married Katherine Shores, who predeceased him in 1995. Bion owned and operated his own trucking company, hauling logs and freight throughout the area. He also worked his dump trucks on the construction of Interstate 91. A local and NASCAR race fan for many years, Bion built a race car that raced at Northeastern Speedway in Waterford during the 1960s. He was an infield judge at Northeastern Speedway as well as Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre and Riverside Speedway in Groveton. He enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cribbage and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Passumpsic Baptist Church, the local Grange and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He also worked at Holiday in the Hills in Granby for many years. Survivors include three children and their spouses, David and Jackie Young of Sebring, Fla., Barbara and Tom Georgi of Bristol, Vt., and Ray and Julie Young of Passumpsic; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Legendre of St. Johnsbury, Dot Cole of Barre, and Vera Greenwood of Littleton; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Don, Earl and Ross Young; and four sisters, Ruby, Helen, Mildred and Gladys. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 21, at 2 p.m., at the Passumpsic Cemetery on Route 5 in Waterford. There will be no calling hours. , 80, of Groveton, N.H., died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Weeks Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Guildhall, Vt. on May 28, 1923, the third of nine children born to Arthur C. and Florence (Paige) Jewell. The family moved to Groveton, N.H., where he was considered to be a lifelong resident. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Army as a toxic gas handler and flame thrower operator. He was a member of Groveton United Methodist Church, a member of Fredonwarell American Legion Post 17 of Groveton and also a lifetime member of Groveton Moose Club of Groveton. He enjoyed watching baseball, enjoyed hunting in his younger years and going to the family camp at Nash Street on Trio Pond. He also attended Groveton schools. Family members include his wife of nearly 57 years, Eleanor M. (Curtis), of Groveton; three sons, Bradley P. Jewell, Curtis J. Jewell and Scott M. Jewell, all of Groveton; two daughters, Pamala A. Welcome of Webster, N.H., and Marilyn J. Morgenthau of Keene, N.H., also two brothers, Ernest Jewell of Groveton and Richard Jewell of Holyoke, Mass., and a sister, Pauline T. Latour, also of Hoyoke, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. , 87, of 39 Barrett St., Lisbon, N.H., passed away at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., Thursday, June 19, 2003, following a sudden illness. She was born in Lyman, N.H., the daughter of Fred and Blanche (Byron) Santy, and spent her childhood in that community. She has been a resident of Lisbon for the past 70 years. She worked as a shipping clerk at the New England Electric Wire Corp., retiring in 1980, following 24 years of service. Her family was the focus of her life, and she lovingly followed the growth and accomplishments of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on a daily basis. She was also an avid gardener. She was predeceased by a daughter, Janice Clement in 1971; her husband, Kenneth in 1973; and a son, David McBurney in 1998. She is survived by a daughter, Erline Jesseman, Landaff, N.H.; five grandchildren, Kevin Clement, Tom Clement, Greg Jesseman, Karen White, Richard Jesseman; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Florence Stearn of Lisbon, N.H., Beverly Bourgoine of Peterborough, N.H., Barbara Zeneski of Suffield, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. , 89, formerly of St. Johnsbury and Montpelier, passed away in Florida, Thursday, June 19, 2003. She had been residing at 53 Sunny Shore Drive in Ormond Beach. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Sept. 22, 1913, the daughter of Hyram and Bridget (Scanlan) Banks. She was married to husband Albert for 60 years, until his death on Nov. 14, 1998. The DesTroismaisons were longtime residents of 91/2 Jay Street in Montpelier. Mrs. DesTroismaisons retired after 35 years as the food and beverage manager for the Tavern Motor Inn in Montpelier. She and her husband moved to Ormond Beach, Fla., in 1972, where she was a parishioner of St. Brendan's Church in Ormond Beach. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and other extended family. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. 86, of 332 Main St. in St. Johnsbury, died at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital Friday evening, June 20, 2003. He was born in St. Johnsbury, April 17, 1917, the son of William and Lucy (Shores) Irwin. He married Margaret Mackay, May 17, 1947. Roland worked for 321/2 years at Ralston Purina before the plant shut down in 1974. He later worked as sexton at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. He lived at his home next to the river for 55 years come this October 28. There he loved to feed the squirrels, woodchucks and raccoons. He is survived by his wife Margaret of St. Johnsbury; a son, Roland W. "Skip" Irwin and wife Robin of Groton; a daughter, Charlene Parker and friend Maggie of East Charleston; and seven grandchildren, Shawn, Kevin, Michelle, Mike, Jon, Sharon and Nancy. He was born in St. Johnsbury June 21, 1943, the son of Irving and Mary Etta (Meigs) Danforth. He married Lorraine Hale of Sheffield. Music was always important in the Danforth family. He was "The Shuffler" and lead singer in the Barnyard Shufflers country western band. He also played with Terry and the Country Americans for years, and the Danforth Brothers. He loved hunting and fishing, spending time with family and especially his grandchildren. He drove truck for Wausau Carriers. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of North Concord; son Brian Danforth and wife Karen and children Megan and Miranda; daughter Alicia Burnham and husband Sunday and children Christopher and Jessica; son Tracy Danforth and wife Darlene and children Melissa and Sarah of Lancaster; a brother, Frank Danforth of North Concord; a sister, Phyllis Wiley of Florida; and nieces, nephews and close friends. , 96, of West Stewartstown, formerly of Lancaster, died Monday morning, June 23, 2003, at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Colebrook, after a recent illness. Mr. Alden was born in East Lancaster, June 3, 1907, the son of William B. and Sarah (Gallagher) Alden. Alfred attended East Lancaster schools and was employed as a farmer. He worked on the family's farm, the Alden Farm in East Lancaster, and later the Savage Farm in Lost Nation. He has been a resident of the Coos County Nursing Hospital, West Stewartstown, since 1963. Family members include two sisters, Dorothy Carr of Lancaster, and Virginia M. Alden of Durham; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters. A visiting hour will be held Thursday morning, June 26, from 10 to 11 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held immediately after at 11 a.m. The Rev. , of Newbury, died quietly at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, Saturday, June 21, 2003, with her sister Sandy and her friend Linda by her side. She was born at Cottage Hospital, May 1, 1934, the daughter of Theron J. "Buster" and Florence E. Carbee of Newbury. Signa was raised and educated in Newbury, and though she loved to travel, she chose to remain in the town she loved. Signa's life is most notable for her contributions to her family and her community. She had been involved in some aspect of community service for most of her life. She had the uncanny ability to identify needs within the community, then bring together the individuals with the skills necessary to address those needs. She was sometimes the moving force and other times the silent support system. She worked on the Cracker Barrel Bazaar, restorations of the Bailey Club and the Church on the Common, the organ fund for the Congregational Church, the Cottage Hospital expansion, and most recently the Tenney Memorial Library addition. She provided leadership by serving as president on the board of the Valley School Corporation, which was the area's first school for developmentally challenged children; she served on the board of trustees for Cottage Hospital from 1974-1990, and was the chair from 1977-1989. Signa was elected moderator of the Newbury Town Meeting, the Town Central School District, the Union High School District 30, and the Newbury Village Annual Meeting. Her moderator duties spanned from 1968-2002. She became a member of the Selectboard of the town of Newbury in 1990, the first woman to hold this office, which she held until the time of her death. In April 2002 she received the Vermont Governor's Award for Outstanding Community Service. Family and friends were primary in Signa's life. She wore many hats: daughter, sister, good friend, aunt and great-aunt, and all with a great flare. She cared for her parents and her good friend Marion Salter in their declining years. She enjoyed the summers spent with her sister Audley and her brother-in-law Pat Rosa. Signa was always there for her family, for the good times and the bad, and will be terribly missed by her sister Sandra Titus; nephew Theron "Ted" Titus; niece Theresa "Terry" Rothe, husband Frank and son Adam; niece Rebecca Rosa; and good friend Linda Stein. At the time of her death, Signa was the director of the Adult Day Service at Oxbow Senior Independence Program, and therefore in lieu of flowers her family wishes remembrances in her honor to be sent to OSIP, P.O. Box 25, Newbury, VT 05051. A celebration of Signa's life will be held Sunday, July 13 at 2 p.m. in the Newbury Congregational Church, followed by a time to remember Sig, sharing stories and food on the Newbury Common.

, 73, of 15 Beech St., Milford, N.H., passed away Monday, June 23, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was born in Brookline, N.H., Jan. 9, 1930, a son the late Ralph Porter Sr. and Bessie (Wheeler) Porter. He was a graduate of Milford High School, Class of 1948. Mr. Porter had been a resident of Milford for more than 50 years. He owned and operated Paul Porter Plumbing & Heating of Milford, until 1991, when he handed the business down to his son Phil. Mr. Porter was a former member of the Milford Fire Department and the Milford Lions Club. He was a master sergeant in the New Hampshire National Guard in Milford for 17 years, and was activated to Fort Bragg, N.C., during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Mr. Porter was predeceased by a brother, Donny Porter. Family members include his wife of 52 years, BettyAnn (Jenness) Porter of Milford; three sons and daughters-in-law, P. She had resided in Cabot for over 30 years; was a member of the Cabot Rescue Squad for 15 years, and was an organizer of the Cabot Fall Foliage Dinner. she also helped to produce the Cabot Community Calendar, and was past president of VFW Post 792 Ladies Auxiliary in Montpelier. Bonnie was married to Donald LaPan in 1960; he predeceased her in December 1973. She married Fred LaMonda in 1974; they were married for nearly 26 years prior to his death Sept. 25, 2000. Bonnie is survived by her mother, Marion Barnett of Plainfield; two daughters, Linda LaMonda of Cabot and Robin LaPan of Cabot and Southern Pines, N.C.; a son, Brad LaPan and wife Lesly of Cabot; a stepdaughter, Deb Tyler of Stowe; two stepsons, Val LaMonda and Carl LaMonda, both of Stowe; three grandchildren, Darci Bevier and Bradley LaPan of Cabot, and Donald Fletcher of Northfield; a sister, Elizabeth Colgrove of Cambridge; a brother, Wallace Barnett of North Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Ellie Spaulding of Morrisville, Helen Camley of Hyde Park and Bernice Kelley of MacGregor, Texas; a brother-in-law, William Sanborn of North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. , 68, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in Newport, Nov. 6, 1934, the son of Joseph Henry Coutu Sr. and Yvonne Marie Trahan. He graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard a sub chaser. He worked most of his life for the Postal Service, for many years as a carrier, walking 15 miles a day, and for the latter part of his career as the assistant postmaster, and then postmaster of the Newport Post Office. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, and other civic organizations. He was the scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 4 from 1968 to 1972. As a youth he attended the national boy scout jamboree in 1950. He was an active member of St. Mary Star of the Sea parish. He was a co-founder of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association. He greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting and curling. Joe is survived by his wife of 48 years, Braunda Darling Coutu; five children and their families, Daniel and Carol Coutu of Amherst, N.H. and their four children, Christopher, Matthew, Dawn and Steven; Michael and Cheiko Coutu of Newport and their three sons, Hayato, Ricky and Bobby; Charles and Deborah Coutu and their three children, Corey, Marc and Bryea; Catherine and Steve Garrison and their daughter Gretchen; and Ronald Coutu and his friend Dee Tiedeman of Troy; two sisters, Therese Harvey of Jacksonville, Fla., and Irene Fontaine of Walden, N.Y.; a brother, Jean Pierre and wife Beatrice Coutu of Newport; and 13 nieces and nephews. He was born July 12, 1930, in Canaan, Vt., the son of the late Perley and Miriam (Edwards) Fearon. He graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., Class of 1952. He retired from Barbertown Parks and Recreation Department in Barbertown, Ohio, in 1966 and moved back to Vermont. He was a member of the Lyndonville United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Blodgett) Fearon of Lyndonville, whom he married on Sept. 18, 1954; two sons, Mark Fearon and wife Kirsten Fleischmann of Milbrae, Calif., and Dean Fearon of Lyndon; two grandchildren, Julia and Michael Fearon; a sister, Janice Jackson and husband Carroll of Colebrook, N.H.; a half-brother, Joel Fearon and wife Ruth of Vergennes; his stepmother, Josephine Fearon of Canaan; a stepsister, Juana Leah Schoff of Canaan; and several nieces and nephews. He was the firstborn to the late Ephraim C. and Anna Pearl (Cory) Palmer, March 20, 1918 in Little Compton, R.I. On May 17, 1943 he married Alice Reynolds, who predeceased him April 24, 1991. He joined Company 1152 of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, and he retired from Canadian National Railways Aug. 29, 1980, after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degree; St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Island Pond; Elks Lodge 1343 in St. Johnsbury; the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, unit 66; and a lifetime member of the U.T.U. and B.L.E. Church is survived by his daughter, Ann Marie Couture and husband Henri of Leesburg, Fla.; his son, Paul C. of 86 Skyline Drive, Lyndonville, passed away at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville on Friday, June 27, 2003, with his family at his side. He was born in Barton on Sept. 6, 1918, the son of the late Ralph and Grace (Brown) Devereaux. He was past president of Lyndonville Rotary, commander of the American Legion, Shriners and Mason. He was a trustee of the Village of Lyndon Center and the Lyndon Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer the USS Soley. After the war, he moved his family to Lyndon Center, where he and Maurice Hill owned and managed Hill Manufacturing Company. In 1958, he and his wife, Louise, became owners of Caledonia Gas. They later purchased Griswold Oil Company and became Caledonia Gas and Oil Company. In 1972, the business was sold to their son Ralph B. Devereaux. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Louise P. Devereaux of 86 Skyline Drive, Lyndonville; his children, Valorie A. Devereaux of Lyndonville, Ralph Devereaux of Lyndonville, Katherine Devereaux of Bellingham, Wash.; his grandchildren, Chris and Kathy Devereaux of Sutton, Brian and Sonia Devereaux of Lyndonville, and Kristin and Robert Barany of Danville; by his great-grandchildren, Irene Devereaux, Ethan Devereaux, Connor Devereaux Barany and Maki Devereaux; by his sister, Doris Eckhoff of Lyndonville; by his two former daughters-in-law, Gail Devereaux of Lyndonville and Linda Seaver of Boston. There will be a graveside service in September at the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton, with a celebration of his life at the family summer cottage at Willoughby. , 82, of St. Johnsbury, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at the Pines Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. The son of George F. and Helen M. (Johnson) Farnsworth, George was born January, 31, 1921, in West Lebanon, N.H. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1940, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War ll. He married Patricia Moulton, who preceded him in death September 1987. George was a rural postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in St. Johnsbury and retired in 1983. He worked as a bartender at the BPOE Lodge 1343, and was a member of the VFW and National Association of Rural Carriers. George is survived by three children and their spouses, Douglas Farnsworth and wife Shelly of St. Johnsbury, Phyllis Randall and husband Pete of Peacham, Gordon Farnsworth and wife Kathleen of St. Johnsbury; six grandchildren, Derek Farnsworth, Geoffrey Farnsworth, Misty Randall and her companion Like Colby, Jennifer Randall Lyndsey Farnsworth and her companion Jeremy Withers, Curtis Farnsworth and his companion Shyanne Marcott. She enjoyed traveling with Community Circle, playing cards with family and friends, gardening and driving her car. On June 28, 1937, Pauline married George Geoffrey, who predeceased her in 1983. , 90, died June 29, 2003, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Lyndon. Pearl was born in Albany, Maine, on March 15, 1913. She attended Lyndon Normal School and started her teaching career in one-room schoolhouses in the area in 1935. In a career in education that spanned over 40 years, her greatest joy came from teaching first grade in the Lyndonville Graded School. Pearl was predeceased by her husband, William Edward Wilson, in 1979, her sister Geraldine P. Cresci, and her brother, Ray Plummer. She is survived by the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her sister, brother and in-laws; Russell and Patricia Wilson of Lyndonville; Claire Wilson of Colorado; and Vivian Plummer of Massachusetts. Memorial services will be held at the First Congregational Church of Lyndonville on Wednesday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. Burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery.
