, 89, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, following a stroke at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mabel was born to Ira and Myrtie Lyon, then of Westmore, along with a sister Mary (Rash), now deceased. Ralph Bishop, currently living in Springfield, Vt., with his wife Charlotte, became an adopted brother to Mabel. With her first husband Harry Quimby, Mabel had her only child, Dr. Scott Quimby, currently living with his wife Sally in Columbus, Ohio. Mabel and Harry ran a tourist home at Lake Willoughby for several years and during the spring months operated a maple sugaring business, an activity Mabel greatly enjoyed. Following Harry's death, Mabel married Carlton Wharton, with whom she enjoyed a full life, dividing their time between Lake Willoughby and Florida until his death. Mabel became a grandmother to the children of Carlton's son Richard and daughters Carol and June as she did to Scott's step-daughters, Cheryl Schuchter and Jill Brooks. Children and grandchildren of Mabel's closest friends look upon her as a mother and grandmother. In recent years, Kathy Holmes of Westmore has enjoyed a special and loving relationship with Mabel, taking care of many of her daily needs. Mabel will be fondly remembered by many as an outstanding cook, whose pies were in great demand. She loved to fish and always looked forward to an opportunity to troll for lake trout with her close friend, Ruth Roberts. Above all her other interests, Mabel loved to read and until the very end of her life particularly enjoyed American history. She could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to those in need and was active in the Westmore Church her entire adult life. , 80, of Parker Road, Whitefield, passed away at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster, Thursday, June 28, 2001, with her family and Dooley the cat by her side. She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., daughter of Aurin Moody and Lavina (Bunton) Chase. She was a graduate of Nottingham High School, State Agricultural School at Morrisville, N.Y., and attended the Massachusetts State Agricultural College, Amherst, Mass., until a lack of students closed the agricultural division due to World War II. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide, and also enjoyed working with the kitchen staff at the Mountain View Hotel in Whitefield. She lived in Inverness, Fla., and was very active in the Church of Nazarene in Hernando, Fla. When her health began to fail, she moved back to Whitefield to be cared for by her daughters prior to her admission to Country Village. Betty had a keen interest in nature and passed her knowledge on to her family. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers and picking seashells at the ocean. In 1946, she married Adelard Pilotte of Whitefield, who predeceased her. She is survived by a son, Alfred Pilotte of Berlin, N.H.; five daughters, Barbara Ingerson of Whitefield, Beverly McMail of Snohomish, Wash., Marie Pilotte of Greenville, N.H., Nancy Grote of Whitefield, and Lavina Pilotte of Twin Mountain, N.H.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Ruth Chase of Whitefield; a brother, Austin Chase of Littlefalls, N.Y.; and three sisters, Lavina Tomb of Newton, Mass., Nancy Lockwood of Warnerville, N.Y., and Mary Jane Chase of Whitefield. , of Waterford, passed away peacefully at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2001, at the age of 80. She was born in Barnet, July 29, 1920, the daughter of George and Ida (Russ) Hall. Her husband, Dean, died Jan. 17, 1993. She was also predeceased by seven brothers, Everett, Eugene, Russell, George, Robert, Richard and Howard; as well as by an infant sister. The Willsons were longtime owners of Willson Farms. She had lived at the farm residence now addressed 1184 Hale Road since 1937. She drove school bus for 28 years, and was a member of the Lower Waterford Congregational Church and the Ladies ' Aid Society of the church. She is survived by four children, Dorothy Dodge and husband Fred of Haverhill, N.H., Larry Willson and wife Dot of Waterford, Reginald Willson of Waterford, and Linda Cushing and husband George of Waterford; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. , 79, of 84 Pine St., Newport, N.H., died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in the Woodlawn Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Born March 14, 1922, in Magog, Quebec, the daughter of Ralph and Edyth Rose (Hartsorn) Hopps, she moved to Groveton as a toddler. She was a graduate of Groveton High School. Polly was a U.S. veteran, serving in the Army during World War II. Before retiring she was an envelope maker at Campbell Envelope Co. of North Stratford, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church. Other memberships include the American Legion Fredonwarell Post 17 in Groveton and the VFW Post 3041 in Lancaster. She was a past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Post 1143 in Groveton. Polly is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Edward (Edith) Young of Newport, N.H.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one foster granddaughter; two sisters, Jesse McBride and Patricia Locke, both of Groveton; one brother-in-law, Wilfred Dumas of Whitefield; many nieces and nephews. , 56, of 604 Mt. Pisgah Road in St. Johnsbury (05819), died very unexpectedly in Newark Friday afternoon, June 29, while traveling to camp in Island Pond. She was born in St. Johnsbury, March 25, 1945, the daughter of Donald and Margaret (Dixon) Magoon. Just this Tuesday, June 26, she was predeceased by her brother, Richard Magoon. Ann had been office manager at Gossco on Summer Street in St. Johnsbury, and still worked there as part-time retread inspector. She was a high-spirited person; she loved to sing and dance, camping at Island Pond, NASCAR and Bobby LaBonte, her '66 Olds, and snowmobiling. It's hard to believe she's gone. She is survived by her husband, George H. Broome Sr. of St. Johnsbury; her mother, Margaret Magoon of St. Johnsbury; five children, Lori Broome and fianc? , 88, of Sunset Drive in St. Johnsbury, died at The Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury Wednesday, June 27, 2001. She was the widow of the late James McKinley. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., April 9, 1913, the daughter of Henry W. and Laura (Gravius) Kumpf. Her husband deceased her in 1975. Mrs. McKinley was a Buffalo State Teachers College graduate and taught elementary school in St. Johnsbury from the early 1950s through the late 1960s. , 75, of 108 Farr Hill Road, passed away Friday, June 29, 2001, in St. Johnsbury, following a long illness. He was born in Littleton, N.H., the son of Ephraim "Dyke" and Rose (Beaudoin) Gadbois. He graduated from Littleton High School, Class of 1943, and then joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a corpsman. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion posts of Littleton. Bob operated "Bob's" Barber Shop on Main Street in Littleton for 35 years, partially retiring in 1990, but he continued taking care of his customers at his home until December of 2000. He attended St. Pascal Elementary School in Hollis, N.Y., and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53. Before retiring he worked as a systems installer for the New York Telephone Company for 34 years. The hobby he enjoyed was radio-controlled airplanes, cars and boats. , 74, passed away unexpectedly at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Vt., Tuesday, July 3, 2001. She was born in Bridgewater, Vt., July 11, 1926, the daughter of Nelson and Etta (Read) Rogers. She attended schools in Bridgewater and Woodstock, Vt. On Sept. 16, 1942, she married Otis C. McKinstry Sr. They resided in the Bridgewater area, Granby and Walden, Vt. They lived in Nokomis, Fla., for about 10 years. Most recently, Myrtle lived in Hardwick, Greensboro and Craftsbury. Early in her married life, Myrtle was a homemaker and mother. Later she worked as an aide at the East Hardwick Nursing Home, at Farland's Studio in Hardwick, and in the Walden School Lunch Program. While in Florida she and Otis worked together as grounds- and housekeepers. Myrtle was a member of the Hardwick United Church. She was active in the Hardwick Area Senior Center, helping with senior meals and volunteering at the Hardwick Welcome Booth. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, and she served on the Walden School Board from 1970 to 1973. Myrtle is survived by her two sons, Otis C. McKinstry Jr. of Barre and Lyle J. McKinstry of Middlesex; two daughters, Lucille Jewett of East Hardwick, and Ilene Parker of Woodbury; two sisters, Beatrice Grover and Pauline Bristol of Brattleboro; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1984, and one son, Neil E. McKinstry, in 1954. , 70, of Rutland, died Wednesday evening, July 4, 2001, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. He was born March 21, 1931, in Morrisville, the son of the late Owen and Maude (Lampher) Douglas. Mr. Douglas graduated from Peoples Academy in 1950. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Douglas bad been employed by the Central Vermont Public Service Company from 1954 to 1973. In 1973 he became employed by Supply Distributors/United Refrigeration in Rutland, and retired as the branch manager in 1990. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 793 in St. Johnsbury since 1962, the American Legion Post 31 in Rutland since 1977, a member and past officer of the IBEW and a former member and past officer of the Refrigeration Services Engineers Society. Survivors include his wife Genora Carpenter Douglas of Rutland; a daughter, Susan Smith, a son, Michael Douglas, and a granddaughter, Krystal Douglas, all of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Kenneth Douglas of Kearney, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Most recently, she was employed at Wal-Mart in Littleton, having previously worked for Garnet Hill, and Connor's Footwear for 25 years. , 90, of Annaburg Manor, Manassas, Va., died Friday, July 6, after struggling with multiple illnesses. She was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Littleton, N.H., the daughter of Peter J. and Delia (LeHoux) Allard. She graduated from Littleton High School in 1929. In 1936 she and her husband Lyman (Bill) Chamberlin moved from Lisbon to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the federal government for decades, retiring in the early 1980s. In December 1999 she moved from Washington to Woodbridge, Va., to be nearer to her family. Over the years Marguerite would return to New Hampshire for visits, staying at the Thayer's Inn. Seeing friends and being able to return to New Hampshire was something she always looked forward to with great anticipation. She is survived by her brother, Raymond E. Allard of Stafford, Va.; two nephews, Raymond L. Allard, of Toronto, Canada; the Rev. Robert E. Allard of Woodbridge, Va., and her niece, Ingrid Allard Nygaard of Stafford, Va. She moved to to the United States in 1937 and became a citizen in 1946. Therese had worked at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville as a nurse's aide and central supply technician for 35 years before retirement in August 1998. Therese was predeceased by her husband Russell Fuller Sept. 5, 1998; a son, Paul Powers, Sept. 1, 1967; and by four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include three children, Jane McTigue of Barre, John Powers of Enfield, Conn., and Anne Rodman of Manchester, N.H.; three stepchildren, Russell Fuller of Westfield, Mass., Dorothy Thibault of Colchester, Vt., and Gloria Thibault of Georgia, Vt.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Lemieux of Crabtree Mills, Quebec; one sister, Helene Bergeron of Noyan, Quebec; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. , 79, of Island Pond, died Saturday, th Country Hospital in Newport. He was born Dec. 5, 1921, in East Burke, the son of the late Shirley (Smith) and Ernest F. Allard. He attended Lyndon Institute. For over 30 years Larry was a carpenter, working on projects from the Saint Lawrence Seaway to the Mount Washington Observatory. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 1487. He enjoyed gardening and hunting birds and deer with family and friends at his camp. He was a member of the Memphremagog Masonic Lodge 95 in Newport, and had received his 50th year membership pin. Larry married Dorris Cleasby of Orleans in 1955. They enjoyed their home and the farm in Island Pond, raising English Setter dogs and Welsh ponies. They took pleasure in the nature and wildlife surrounding them in the Northeast Kingdom. Dorris predeceased him Dec. 9, 1995. He was also predeceased by his brother, Burton Allard, Aug. 16, 1984; by his sister, Barbara Allard, April 1, 2001; and by a nephew, Philip Heath, June 5, 2000. He is survived by his sister, Mildred Heath of Lyndonville; and by several nieces and nephews, including Joanne Rowe and her husband Everett, Sandra Chesley and her husband Wendell, and Robert Heath and his wife Faye, all of Lyndonville, Norma Twombley of Wheelock, and Jacqueline Dadourian of St. Johnsbury; and by numerous cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. In recent years, Larry had enjoyed the company and friendship of Lorraine Maloney of Newport Center, her son Tom and daughter Betty. There will be no calling hours. , 90, passed away peacefully Friday, July 6, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Johnsbury. She was born Sept. 20, 1910, in Belvidere, Vt., a daughter of the late Frederick and Alice Robtoy. She married Leo Kenyon, who predeceased her in 1960. She was employed as a cook with the St. Johnsbury Hospital for many years. Laura will be well remembered and greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by a brother, Bernard Robtoy and his wife Hilda of Swanton, Vt.; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a very special cousin, Pamela Pratt of St. Johnsbury. She was also predeceased by two brothers; and by five sisters, Bernice Braley, Yvonne Laplant, Barbara Root, Agnes Button, and Evelyn "Jean" Robtoy; a niece, Sergeant Penelope Pelletier; and a nephew, Christopher Robtoy. , 78, of Huron Street, Whitefield, N.H., died suddenly, Sunday, July 8, 2001, at his home. He was born in Whitefield, the son of Floyd and Annie (Prue) Suitor. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served as an aviation machinist's mate second class in the South Pacific as part of Fleet Air Wing 17. He worked for the Amoco Service Station as a mechanic and then opened his own place, Dan Suitor's Garage. He was a member of the VFW Post 3041, Lancaster, N.H., and the American Legion Post 4, Whitefield, N.H. He was a parishioner of the St. Matthews Catholic Church. He loved tinkering on old cars, but most of all spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife Mahleeah (Parks) Suitor of Whitefield; three sons, David of Goffstown, Thomas of Bethlehem, and John of Whitefield; two daughters, Mary Kay Sartwell of Pembroke and Elizabeth Fraser of Concord; four grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Matott of Whitefield. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, July 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, 69 Lancaster Road, Whitefield. Mrs. Cox loved camping, crafts, and especially knitting mittens for the Santa Fund. Perhaps her greatest fondness was for animals. Survivors include two daughters, Loraine Bedor of St. Johnsbury and Janice Eychner of Lolo, Mont.; a brother, Herbert Foster of New Castle, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Cox, May 18, 1981; a brother, Perley, and two sisters, Nora and Etta. , wife of Dr. Hubert Hawkins, fell asleep in the Lord after a long illness, Thursday, July 5, 2001, at her home in North Danville. Mrs. Hawkins was born in Rome, N.Y., May 6, 1938, the daughter of the late Claude and Evelena (Leech) Burpee. She spent most of her childhood with her step-parents, Myron and Ruth (Meleen) Powers. Rhea was a very devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and at one time served as an accredited teacher in the Lynwood and Glendale, Calif., Seventh-day Adventist school districts. Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Mass., receiving a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from that institution. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Christopher, Michael and Matthew; two stepdaughters, Winette Aho and Carolyn Trace; one stepson, Hubert W. Hawkins; two brothers, Stewart and Donald Burpee; two sisters, Elnora Kline and Beverly Gillespie; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Hawkins family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening, July 13, from 6-8 p.m. The casket will be closed. , 92, formerly of 106 Academy St., Franconia, N.H., passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the Lafayette Elder Care Center in Franconia of natural causes. She was born Aug. 13, 1908, in Whitefield, N.H., the daughter of Thomas and Laura (Kelley) Griffin. As a young girl she lived in Littleton before moving to Monroe. Sadie went on to graduate from the Plymouth Normal School, Class of 1928, as a teacher. She married her husband, Everett F. Barry, Oct. 21, 1931. They lived in Warren, N.H., for a short while before moving to Franconia in 1941. Sadie enjoyed her home and family life, rug-braiding, gardening, and spending a number of her retirement years in the Spring Hill, Fla., area. Surviving family members include a daughter, Laura-Beth Ramsey of Littleton; a son, Charles E. Barry of North Haverhill, N.H.; a grandson, Robert Barry of Bow, N.H.; a granddaughter, Amy Perry of Newbury, Vt.; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Griffin of Monroe; and a sister, Harriette O 'Neil of Melbourne, Fla. He worked at Cary Maple Sugar Company in St. Johnsbury before moving to a managerial position at American Maple Products in Newport, where he was active in the production and packaging of maple candy. After retiring, he donated time at the rape crisis center and the Chamber of Commerce in Newport. With his woodworking hobby, he left many beautiful heirlooms to the family. He was known far and wide as "The Pied Piper" on CB radio. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hodge of Castleton, N.Y.; a sister, Arlene Akley of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Neal Ayer of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Ginger Cheney of West Sand Lake, N.Y., and Trevor and Ryan Hodge of New Port Richey, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a selectman and road commissioner/foreman for the town of Victory during his retirement. He will be missed for his strong wit and humor and sense of pride, as well as being both a mother and father to his children. He leaves two sons, Michael Spera of East Hartford, Angelo and his wife Daniela Spera of Kensington; a daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Robert Flanigan of Granby, Conn.; two sisters, Connie Cantafi of Wethersfield, and Gloria Schofield of Colorado; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. , passed away quietly at her home in West Palm Beach, Fla., June 28, 2001. She lived seasonally in East Peacham from 1937 to 1969. Dr. Clough was a renowned language teacher and above all a promoter of Italian culture and history. Dr. Clough was born in New York City in 1906 of Italian parents, grew up in the "Italian" areas of the Bronx and Brooklyn, received a B.A. in Italian from Hunter College, studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the University of Florence, and received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Italian from Columbia University. She was a professor of Italian at Hunter College from 1928 to 1956, when she left to head the Modern Language Department of Finch College, as well as to teach art history and courses on Italian and French culture. She taught at the Middlebury Summer School at the College of Vermont and at Sarah Lawrence College in Florence, Italy. Upon "retirement" in 1971, she founded the Center for Italian Studies in the Palm Beaches, Fla., where she was director until the end of 2000. She was a longtime member of Il Circolo Italiano and of Le Cercle Francais of Palm Beach. She has published numerous articles on Italian art, literature and culture, as well as a total of 11 books, including a definitive Italian grammar, major works on Futurism, and most recently a self-published volume, "Modern Italian Art, 1840-1996." In 1972, Dr. Clough was knighted by the Italian government, receiving the title of Cavaliere, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. In the same year, she was chosen by Clare Booth Luce, then U.S. Ambassador to Italy, to lecture throughout Italy on American Culture. In 1994, the National Association of Women Business Owners recognized Dr. Clough for the foundation of the Center for Italian Studies, and in 1995, Dr. Clough was elected to the Hunter College, New York City, Hall of Fame. In 1996, the Italian government further honored Dr. Clough with the title of Commendatore, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. Dr. Clough dedicated her life to bringing European, and primarily Italian art, literature and language to American students of all ages, beginning with her former husband Shepard B. Clough, professor of Economic History at Columbia University, her family, generations of college students, and ending with friends in her retirement. She was a wonderful educator as measured by the success of her pupils, their enthusiasm for the subjects she taught, buoyed by her boundless energy and constant pursuit of the intellectual in Italian life. She is mourned by her many friends, including particularly those with her at her death; a close nephew, Salvatore Trillo of Glendora, Calif.; two sons, Shepard A. Clough of Lexington, Mass., and Peter N. Clough of Paris, France, and their families, including seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, including grandson Mark S. Clough, his wife Lorraine Clough and their son Benjamin of Danville.

, 88, former resident of St Johnsbury and Greensboro, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, in Sun City, Ariz. She was born in Rutland, Dec. 1, 1912, the daughter of Albert and Edith (McNally) Spicer. She graduated from Rutland High School, Class of 1929, and Rutland Business College. She married Dr. Elbridge E. Johnston in Craftsbury, June 19, 1937. Dr. Johnston died Feb. 3, 1991. She was the business manager of her husband's office until his retirement in 1979. Known for her contagious smile and kindly ways, wherever she resided - whether St. Johnsbury, Greensboro, Nova Scotia or Arizona - Mildred opened her home as well as her heart to family and friends. Her competitive spirit shined through and she was always ready for a challenging game of scrabble or cribbage, as well as a game of bridge. She was a member of South Congregational Church and Diamond Chapter 14, Order of the Eastern Star in Danville. She is survived by one daughter, Harriet S. Perkins of Greensboro and Sun City, Ariz.; two sons, Douglas L. Johnston of Charlotte, N.C., and Allan Ross Johnston of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce MacQuarrie Johnston in 1996; and one brother and two sisters. A memorial service will be held Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. in the Greensboro United Church of Christ. The Rev. Grant Johnston will officiate. Interment will be in the Castle Hill Cemetery in MacLellans Brook, Nova Scotia. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Her husband, Charles O. Thurston, died in 1981, and a son, "Bill," in 1980. There was no place Mrs. Thurston liked better than camp at Newark Pond. Her extended family was very special to her. She remained active and independent right up to her death; her family is sure she has no regrets. She is survived by three children, Dan Thurston and wife Roberta of St. Johnsbury, Beverly Blake and husband Raymond of Windsor, and Ernie Thurston and wife Barbara of St. Johnsbury; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Carpenter of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Frank Hall and wife Margaret of St. Johnsbury; a sister, Gladys Keene of Auburn, Maine; and nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a brother, George Hall, in 1982, and a sister, Alice Martin, in 1994. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the South Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. , 82, of Zephyrhills, Fla., beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at her home July 14, 2001, in the company of her family. She was born in Lyndon, Nov. 7, 1918, to Robert and Dora Gaskin. She attended Lyndon Institute, was a member of the United Methodist Church of Zephyrhills, Rebeccas, Women of the Moose, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Benjamin J. Warrell of Zephyrhills; one son, Frederick P. Warrell and daughter-in-law Frances of Bingham, Maine; one sister, Evelyn Jennings of Bristol; six grandchildren, Mark Warrell and Mrs. Teresa Foderingham of Massachusetts, Mrs. Michele Landry of New Gloucester, Maine, Brigette and Troy Warrell of Bingham, Maine, and Mrs. An Maine; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Hazel Coe and husband the Rev. Wallace Coe of Deltona, Fla.; three other sisters-in-law, Edith Aldrich and Arlene Warrell of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Giselle Gaskin of Lyndonville; and brother-in-law Ralph Warrell and wife Kay of St. Johnsbury; plus many nieces and nephews. , 85, of Newport, passed away in Newport, Sunday, July 15, 2001. She was born in Woodsville, N.H., May 9, 1916, the only daughter of Stephen Kingsbury and Margaret Ann (Matthews) Wallace. Barbara attended Woodsville Graded School until moving to Newport in September 1929, where she then attended the Old West School on School Street. She graduated from Newport High School in June 1934, and attended Northampton Commercial College in Northampton, Mass. She worked for Citizens Utilities from 1936 until 1951, at which time her husband started L.A. Rivard Construction Co. and later Newport Rental. Barbara worked with him in both of these businesses. Barbara was a devoted member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, and a member of St. Mary's Communicant, and Mission Team. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Memphremagog Historical Society, the Derby Homemakers, the Newport Women's Club, and the Breast Cancer Support Group. On Nov. 19, 1951, Barbara was united in marriage to Laurend A. Rivard of Newport, who predeceased her Sept. 13, 1986. To this union were born Stephen L. Rivard and Margaret Rivard Leavens. She is survived by her children, Stephen and his wife Judith of Williston, and Margaret and her husband Gary of Derby, and her grandchildren, Lindsay A. Rivard and Robert L. Rivard of Essex and Williston, and Meredith A. Leavens and Emily E. Leavens of Derby. The family would like to give special thanks to Gertrude Burke, Barbara's "kindred spirit." , 98, of Richford, Vt., passed away at the Our Lady of the Meadows Nursing Home in Richford, Monday, July 16, 2001. She was born April 17, 1902, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Kathleen always worked caring for others. For 30 years, she was the housekeeper in the Little Flower Church in Bethesda, Md., retiring at age 85, and for the last 13 years she has made her home in Vermont. Her only request was that you remember her in your prayers. The interment will be private.

, died July 10, 2001, in Jacksonville, Fla. She was born in Amsterdam, N.Y., Feb. 7, 1907, the daughter of Albert and Margaretha (Hoffmann) Krautter of Unterweissach, Germany. In 1923 she moved to Glendale, Queens, New York City, where she resided for 70 years, before moving to Florida. She graduated from Adelphi College in 1927, and taught French, German and Latin in Richmond Hill High School, Queens. She received her master's degree in library science in 1959, and was the librarian in the elementary school, Wantagh, Long Island, N.Y., until her retirement in 1970. She married Daniel P. Nolan, Sept. 25, 1937. He predeceased her Feb. 22, 1957. Surviving family members include three sons, Patrick J. Nolan, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Gerard F.X. Nolan, Cokesbury, N.J., and Daniel A. Nolan, Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Margaret Nolan Paddock, Littleton, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 21, at 11 a.m., at St. Pancras Catholic Church, Glendale, Queens, New York City, N.Y.

, lifelong resident of Burke, died at her home Wednesday morning, July 17, 2001, at the age of 99. She was born in Burke, Aug. 11, 1901, the daughter of Tyler and Mary (Farr) Gaskill. On Dec. 24, 1923, she married Ernest A. Temple. They operated a dairy farm on Route 114, where she has lived for 75 years. Mrs. Temple was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Workers of the East Burke Congregational Church, and life member of Eastern Star. Survivors include her two sons and their families, Franklin and Dorothea Temple of St. Johnsbury, and Ralph and Shirley Temple of East Burke; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Temple in 1975; her granddaughter, Sue Temple; and her two sisters, Tennie Toussaint and Laura Hudson. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 20, at 11 a.m., at Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke with the Rev. Joel Battaglia officiating. There will be no visiting hours. , 83, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at her son's home in Concord, Vt. The daughter of Harry G. and Abbie (Keneson) Paquin, she was born March 4, 1918, in Danville. She attended two schools in North Danville and then what was known as the Phillips Academy at Danville High School. She married Kenneth A. Hudson and was a faithful and dedicated wife for 27 years, at which time Kenneth preceded her in death. She worked as a cook in her younger days. Later in life she was a home care provider for many of the elderly in the area, providing them with the care, love and compassion needed in their more difficult years. Josephine's life was dedicated to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as they and their concerns were hers also. She was always there to help and give encouragement no matter what. Josephine is survived by two sons and their families, Ranson Hudson, wife Ginger, and Ranson Hudson Jr., Eric Hudson and Spencer Hudson, all of Concord; and Roydon Hudson, wife Barbara, and Melody Dimick, Jennifer Laflam, and Kenney Hudson, all of Lisbon; Roydon Hudson Jr. of Maryland; Steve Webster of Whitefield; Stephanie Edmond of Bethlehem; Leota Robinson of Lisbon; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Gravett of Arlington, Mass., and May Marrier of Burlington; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1935; her mother in 1968; two brothers and two sisters, Harry Agustus Paquin, Edmund Paquin, Martha Ailes and Regina Hubbord; two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law. , 77, of Newbury, Vt., died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Newbury. He was born May 25, 1924 in Newbury, the son of the late Louis and Maude (McClintock) Meyette. He was also predeceased by a brother, John H. Meyette, in 1999. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer. He is survived by two brothers, Gilbert and Bill Meyette of Newbury; a sister, Alice Emerson of Newbury; and by several nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no funeral services.

, 54, of Still Hill, Glover, passed away suddenly in Newport, Thursday, July 19, 2001. He was born in Barton, Nov. 4, 1946, the son of Hugh Sr. and Blanche (Lamonda) Stone. Hugh served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in Germany. He worked as a shipping clerk for EHV in St. Johnsbury, and before that had worked as a meat cutter at Currier's Market in Glover for eight years. When his health permitted, he was an active member of the VFW Newport Alfred Pepin Post 798, and the American Legion Barton Post 76. Hugh spent a great deal of time following the Winston Cup races and especially his favorite driver, the late Dale Earnhardt. He and his wife spent a great deal of time camping with their very good friends, Bruce and Janice Conley. Hugh especially enjoyed family gatherings and having his grandchildren around, and having them call him Pa Pa. When he stopped working he enjoyed driving the back roads with his Dad and often went into the Busy Bee to visit with his friends and visitors. On Oct. 4, 1969, Hugh married the former Sandra Billado, who survives him. He is also survived by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Blanche Stone of Barton; his children, Stacey Tanner and her husband Eddie of Lyndonville, Scott Stone and his wife Diedre of Glover, and Carmen Stone and her fiance Michael Boudreau of Irasburg; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Brandon and Emily Tanner of Lyndonville, Kaitlyn and Cassandra Stone of Glover, and Troy and Carly Boudreau of Irasburg; his brothers, Harley Stone and his wife Cathy of Walden, Dale Stone and his wife Audrey of Sutton, Norman Stone of North Carolina, and James Stone and his wife Bonnie of Irasburg; his sisters, Lois Menard of Glover, Julie Willey of Glover, Peggy Bly and her husband Tom of Morgan, and Tammi Fontaine and her friend Terry of Barton; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. , 80, of 212 Caledonia St., St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday evening, July 18, 2001. He had resided at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center since the end of March of this year. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Dec. 22, 1920, the son of Peter and Angelina (Paino) Ciattoni. He was predeceased by his dear mother July 13, 1983; his father in 1935; his nephew Tony Simpson in 1995; his brothers Ralph, Joseph and Vincent; and by an infant sister. Joseph was blind since the age of 12. He left St. Johnsbury to attend the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Massachusetts and Royal Graves School for the Blind in Pennsylvania. Joe specialized in such handcrafting skills as chair-caning, arts and crafts, leather working, and basket weaving, products his sister Catherine would help him sell. Except for his schooling, Joe spent his life with his family on Caledonia Street. He was a faithful communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and a member of the Vermont Association for the Blind. He is survived by two sisters, Catherine Ciattoni and Angela Simpson, both of St. Johnsbury; one niece, Lucinda Simpson Prohaska and husband Ron of St. Johnsbury; and one grandniece, Kyle. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 90, of 705 New Britain Ave., Hartford, Conn., wife of the late Glenn "Sam" Walter Piper, died Thurs., July 19, 2001, at Avery Heights in Hartford. Born in Fitchburg, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Dwight and Grace (Campbell) Simpson. Mrs. Piper had lived in the Hartford area since 1955, was a member of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield and was also a former member of the church choir. She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt., worked for over 30 years at United Technologies, was a member of the Eastern Star and the Grange in Vermont. She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Pedretti and her husband Donald of South Thomaston, Maine, and Jane Piper of Cromwell; four grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Mark Waters, and Karen Catalfamo; and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Piper Waters; a twin brother, Richard Simpson; and a sister, Ethel Bixby. There will be no services or calling hours, and burial will be in St. Johnsbury Center, Vt., at the convenience of the family. , 79, of Hardwick, died unexpectedly at his home, Friday, July 20, 2001. He was born in Hardwick June 10, 1922, the son of J. Bert and Gladys (Stanford) Hooper. Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of war. Following his honorable discharge, he was recalled by the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a 54-year member of American Legion Post 7 of Hardwick. Robert was a former 38-year member of the Hardwick Fire Department. In his early years he drove a bus for the New York Institute for the Blind and trucks for Roland Ames and Mack McCanna. He then became a self-employed plumber. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Bertha (Couture); a daughter, Deborah and her husband Allen Lawson; a granddaughter Lanna of Walden; a brother, Richard Hooper of Hardwick; and a sister, Roberta Baker of Danville. He was predeceased by an infant son. His family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the des Groseilliers Funeral Home on Church Street in Hardwick. , 84, of North Danville, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. He was born in Lisbon, N.H., June 17, 1917, the son of Fredrick and Jessie (Parker) Stebbins. Mr. Stebbins was employed by Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn.; he later worked for Judson Turney, a bottle gas company, and then went into business for himself as owner of Nathan Hale Gas in Coventry, Conn. In 1968 he moved to North Danville and started the American Gas garage in St. Johnsbury with his foster son, Larry Garrett. Later he worked at True Temper, retiring 20 years ago. On Sept. 26, 1942, he married Doris (Keene) Stebbins, who survives him in North Danville. He was a member of the North Danville Baptist Church, and he enjoyed horses and speedboats. Other survivors include two sisters, Lily Willis of Clemmons, N.C., and Edith Hammond of North Haverhill, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. The Stebbins had seven foster children. He was predeceased by three brothers, Fernald, Walter and William; and three sisters, Marion Frizzell, Doris Ball and Connie Barone. , 78, of Whitcomb Hill Road, Bethlehem, N.H., died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at her home. She was born in Elkins, Pa., March 16, 1923, the daughter of Fred and Helen (Spangler) Herbert. She had a premedical degree from Ursinus College and did research work for the national drug company, John Wyeth Company in Philadelphia. After developing chemical sensitivities, she took post-graduate courses in environmental science at Plymouth State College and the University of Pennsylvania. She held a naturalist position at Briar Bush Nature Center in Abington, Pa. During that time, she was the first woman to receive the Kiwanis William F. Kuhn Jr. Award for outstanding service to the community and the Griscom Award for her efforts on behalf of Briar Bush Center in training volunteers, writing curricula, newspaper articles, creating displays and establishing plantings. Involved in a para-professional program, she provided activity programs for Hopkins Nursing Home in Wyncote, Pa., as well as teaching troubled teen-agers at Wyncote Academy. She also arranged programs for the KEENAGERS, a senior citizen community group held at Elkins Park Church, and helped Boy Scouts obtain Eagle badges. After summering in Bethlehem, Helen and her husband George made it their home in 1994. Prior to the move she had volunteered at the Twin Mountain Fish Hatchery and Display Center. After their move Helen joined the Littleton Garden Club, the Audubon Society, the Poetry Club of Bethlehem, and completed a Hospice course in Littleton. She enjoyed church activities at the Durrell United Methodist Church, Bethlehem, and the Faith Bible Church, Littleton. She was predeceased by her husband, George Shuster Jr., in 1998. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. George F. Shuster III of Albuquerque, N.M., and J. Robert Shuster of Kotzebue, Alaska; two daughters, Kathy Shuster Leland of Bethlehem, and Nancy Kraus of Naples, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and step-family. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 29, at 3 p.m., at the Durrell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arthur Savage and the Rev. Mac Starring officiating. , 85, known to friends and family as Earl, beloved husband of Mary (Cutts) Bond of Atlantis, Fla., and formerly a resident of Barre, passed away Monday, July 23, 2001, at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis. He was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Barre, the son of Harley and Grace (Stevens) Bond. He attended Barre City schools, and in his early years worked at Bailey Brothers Auto Parts as a salesman. On Aug. 31, 1935, he married Mary Lillian Cutts. They made their home in Barre for 45 years. He served in the United States Army from 1944-45. Upon his return to Barre, he worked for Bailey Brothers in Barre and West Lebanon, N.H., until 1955, when he began his own business. On March 1, 1956, with his wife Mary, he opened the first Bond Auto Parts store on Buzzell Place in Barre. Over the next 24 years, the business expanded to include eight stores in Vermont and New Hampshire. In 1980, Mary and Earl retired and moved to Atlantis. The Bond Auto Parts business continues to be family-owned and operated, and has grown to be the largest Vermont-owned auto parts chain in the state. In later years, Earl's interests primarily centered around his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and card player, and also enjoyed traveling with his wife. Beside his wife, survivors include his children, Barbara Odell and her husband Donald of Plano, Texas, Joyce Pecuc and her husband Thomas of Claremont, N.H., William Bond and his wife Elizabeth of Barre, and George Bond and his wife Cynthia of Barre; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Bond of New Hampshire, James Bond of Arizona, and Robert Bond of Montpelier. He was predeceased by his parents; his three sisters, Gladys, Esther, and Grace; and three brothers, Evan, Elwin, and Wayne. In his final years, Earl was lovingly cared for in his home by Sandra, Amos and Dylan Loutan of Wellington, Fla., and Andrea Stewart of Lake Worth, Fla. His funeral service will be held at the Hedding United Methodist Church on Washington Street in Barre, Friday, July 27 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. There are no calling hours. , 31, of Hillside Drive,Vestal N.Y., passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Brigham's Hospital, in Boston, Mass., surrounded by family and friends after a valiant fight with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Jason was born April 6, 1970, in St. Albans, Vt., and grew up in Littleton, N.H. In 1988 he graduated from Littleton High School, where he excelled in sports and was a true class leader. Jason graduated from Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H., in 1992 with a bachelor of science degree in aviation management. He served five years in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a captain and senior missile launch officer. He had a masters degree in aviation science from Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Fla. At the time of Jason's diagnosis he was completing his final course for a second masters degree in leadership from Augsbury College in Minneapolis, Minn. He is survived by his wife, Doreen (West) Jenness of Vestal, N.Y.; his mother, Rhonda Jenness of Littleton; his sister, Jade Monahan and her fiance E.J. Chea of Portsmouth, N.H.; his father- and mother-in-law, Tim and Sherry West of Hamilton, Mont.; his brother- and sister-in-law, Dan and Laura West of Bozeman, Mont,; his niece, Taylor West of Bozeman, Mont.; his beloved yellow labs Sierra and Savanna; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Following his military service Jason worked for US West in Minneapolis and most recently was employed by Sanmina (formerly Hadco) Corporation in Owego, N.Y. Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 26 at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, N.H., from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, July 27 at 10 a.m. at the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Joseph Klatka as celebrant. Committal rites will follow at the Saint Rose Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jason's memory to Jason Leo Jenness Memorial Fund, in care of Binghamton Savings Bank, 540 Hooper Road, Endwell, NY 13760. Contributions will be given to The Family Inn, a home-away-from-home for transplant patients and their families.
