, 80, of 15 Checchi St., Groton, Vt., died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at her residence. She was born April 15, 1921, in Newbury, the daughter of George and Maude (Smith) Bailey. She was a graduate of Newbury High School. On June 22, 1940, she married Herman A. Clark. They lived in Newbury until 1945, at which time they moved to Groton. She was very active in the daily operations of the dairy farm. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Oxbow Chapter, where she held several offices including past regent; the Groton Historical Society, the Home Dems; was a 4-H leader; and a member of the Peacham Congregational Church. She was predeceased by her husband Herman A. Clark, on March 2, 1999; four brothers, John, Lewis, Gerald and Clayton Bailey, who died at infancy; and one sister, Charlotte Amidon. Surviving relatives include four children, Lucille M. Nelson and husband Pat Nelson of Sheffield, Priscilla C. Sherburne and husband Richard Sherburne of Woodsville, John Clark and wife Laura Clark of East Barre, and Judy M. Vedder and husband John Vedder of Shrewsbury, Mass.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Madeline Harwood of Manchester Center, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held today, Monday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m., in the funeral home. Pastor Elizabeth Davis of the Woodsville United Methodist Church will officiate. , 44, of Covered Bridge Road, Coventry, passed away suddenly in Johnson on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. He was born in Belville, Ill., on July 2, 1957, the son of Stanley and Marianne (Marshall) Baker. He worked as tech support at IBM for the last six years. On April 25, 1981, Kevin married the former Ann Soucy, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Jessica Baker, a sophomore at St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y., Aaron Baker of Coventry, and Sarah Baker of Coventry; his parents, Stanley and Marianne Baker of Derby; his brother, Alan Baker and his wife Cindy of Sheffield; and his sisters, Beth Bouffard and her husband David of Newport, and Ellen Bickford and her friend Don Emery of Newport. 93, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dorothy Abbie Cheney, March 5, 1908, in St. Johnsbury, to William E. Cheney and Bertha M. Chappell. She grew up in St. Johnsbury and Bennington, Vt. On Nov. 6, 1926, she married John J. Gracie in Rutland. They lived in Bennington and Miami, Fla., before settling in the Northeast Kingdom in the 1940s. She and her husband owned numerous small businesses over the next 30 years, including "Mom and Pop" stores such as the Midway Market in Lyndonville, and restaurants such as the Town and Country in Lyndonville and Dot's Restaurant in Irasburg. Her favorite memories were of the years when they ran Gracie's Inn in Lyndonville. She especially enjoyed remembering the Saturday night dances at the inn. After retirement, she and her husband settled in Lyndonville. In recent years she enjoyed reading romance novels, watching Dan Rather, visits from family members, weekly dinners out with her friend Tom, long rides, and treks to Bennington with her granddaughter Theresa during fall foliage season to revisit the scenes of her youth. She is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Duguay of St. Johnsbury; a son, Richard Gracie and his friend Susan Dugan of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Paul Cheney of Newport, N.H.; niece Ann Reed and husband Dennis of Augusta, Maine; nephew Paul Cheney and wife Timaree of El Cajon, Calif.; niece Dorothy Crete and husband Andrew of Manchester, N.H.; her dear friend Tom Gould of East Burke and Twin City, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, John Gracie Sr.; a son, John Gracie Jr.; a brother, Guilford Cheney Sr.; a sister-in-law, Inez Cheney; a son-in-law, Maurice Duguay; a daughter-in-law, Maud Gracie; and a nephew, Guilford Cheney Jr. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m., at the Guibord Funeral Home in Lyndonville. , 96, a resident of Lexington Avenue, Brattleboro, died Saturday evening, Dec. 1, at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. Mrs. Page was born Nov. 20, 1905, the daughter of Ernest L. and Lena H. (Davis) Harris. She grew up in Wilmington, where she attended local schools, graduating from Wilmington High School in the Class of 1923. She continued her education at the former Keene Business College. She married Carl Page in Hinsdale, N.H.; he predeceased her in 1985. After they were married they made their home in Brattleboro, and eventually relocated to West Lebanon, N.H., due to his work with the telephone company. In 1942 they returned to Lexington Avenue in Brattleboro, where she made her home since. She worked at the Taylor Insurance Company, Dunham's Footwear, and for many years as the evening receptionist at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1970 when she turned 65. Mrs. Page always enjoyed attending auctions and antiquing; she particularly enjoyed collecting items of local interest in the Wilmington and Brattleboro areas, including postcards, antique commemorative pitchers and cups, and button hooks. She was a member of the retired Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. Page is survived by her son, Robert O. Page of Brattleboro; a daughter, Marilyn A. Page of Brattleboro; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard L. Harris, in July 2001; and her sister, Leona A. Titus, in 1977. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m., in the Page family lot in Riverview Cemetery, Wilmington, with the Rev. John Cerrato, pastor of the Wilmington Baptist Church, officiating. , 55, of 19 Helene St., Newport, died suddenly, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in Newport Center. He was born Aug. 13, 1946, in Barre, Vt., a son of Harry and Vina Williams. On Oct. 12, 1968, he married Margaret "Peggy" Morgan. Mr. Williams graduated from Groton High School, Groton. He was a locomotive engineer for the Northern Vermont Railway. Mr. Williams was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and held memberships with the American Legion Post 21 and the NRA. He was an avid hunter. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Williams of Newport; two children, Katherine E. Williams of Waterbury, and Steven H. Williams of Newport; a sister, Sylvia Welch of Ryegate; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Dean. , 81, of Newbury, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford. He was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Bradford, the son of Byron R. and Lillian (Carnes) Downing. He married Lillian B. Aiken in Chelsea on June 30, 1939. He attended school in Chelsea, Vt. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He returned home to Chelsea for two years before following logging operations throughout the central Vermont area. Edgar and Lillian lived in Corinth for a few years before moving to Northfield, Vt. in 1960. They lived 20 years in Northfield before moving to Newbury in 1989. Edgar had worked for Carl Downing, East Corinth Bobbin Mill, and for 21 years at Northfield Wood Products in Northfield. He was a member of the American Legion in Bradford. He enjoyed spending time with his family, building things with wood, and growing roses in his garden. He is survived by a son, Richard Downing of Newbury; three daughters, Arloa Whitcher of Corinth, Vt., Elaine Smith of Topsham, Vt., and Joyce Barbara of West Newbury; a sister, Maxine A. Downing of Chelsea, Vt.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Lillian, Aug. 17, 2001; a daughter, Mary Downing; two brothers, Byron and Bernard Downing; and five sisters, Doreen Morrill, Beverly Downing, Lila Lyon, Thelma Austin and Marjorie Beckhorn. She was born in Brodheadsville, Pa., May 19, 1903, the daughter of Eugene and Anna Serfass. Mrs. Hammond was a resident of North Haverhill for many years. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Womens Club in North Haverhill. She was predeceased by her husband, Don J. Hammond, in 1968; and her two sons, Linwood G. Hammond in May 1981, and Dean G. Hammond in December 1992. He was a self-employed logger and a member of the National Guard Unit of Bradford. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and trapping and was a member of the Vermont Trappers Association. Surviving relatives include his mother, Bessie (Stone) Colbeth of Newbury; two brothers, Tom A. Colbeth of West Newbury, and Rodney W. Colbeth of Newbury; one sister, Linda M. Wilds of Newbury; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, John Robert Colbeth, Aug. 7, 1986; his father, Fred Colbeth, Sept. 30, 1998; and one sister, Joyce Rae Colbeth, Aug. 24, 1993. Mrs. Butler had worked as a secretary for the Ralston Purina Company and Truline Surveyors, both of St. Johnsbury. A member of Grace United Methodist Church, she had many associations with the church including serving as youth choir director. On Dec. 3, 1943, she married Julian Butler, who survives her in St. Johnsbury. Other survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lynne and Roy Kowski of Barre, and Joyce and David Penneman of Madisonville, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Kris Jurentkuff, Julie Thresher, Jerry Penneman, Mary Penneman, Michelle Penneman, Daniel Penneman and Claire Penneman; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Kassandra Thresher; a brother-in-law and wife, Russell and Lois Butler of Groton; and several nieces and nephews. , 73, of 456 Under the Mountain Road, Lyman, N.H., died at her residence, Dec. 6, 2001, after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. She was born Sept. 8, 1928, a daughter of Charles L. and Jennette M. (McFarland) Gregor. Before moving to Franconia, N.H., in 1973, Jennette resided in Charlestown, Mass. She moved with her family to Lyman in 1977. Previous to her retirement she was a co-owner and operator of Franstead Bakery in Franconia, and later helped operate Pinnacle Enterprise, a vending business at the top of Mount Washington, with her husband. Surviving family members include two sons, George A. and Brian J. Melchin; four daughters, Gail A. Hanscom, Patricia A. Carroll, Robin A. Maloof and Diane M. Reid; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Gregor, and a sister, Barbara Rastellini. She was predeceased by her husband, George, Nov. 30, 1994. , of North Haverhill, N.H., died Nov. 30, 2001, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill after a brief illness. Her granddaughter, Susan (Gummerus) Presby, was at her side. Born in La Patrie, Quebec, Canada, Dec. 7, 1907, she was the daughter of Cheophase J. Desrosiers and Mary (Brouillard) Desrosiers. Mrs. Anderson moved from Canada at a young age to Berlin, N.H., and later to Fitchburg, Mass., where she lived for the next 50-plus years. She then moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., where she spent the next 20 years before returning to New Hampshire in 1998. She worked most of her adult life for various companies in the Firchburg area, including Burbank Hospital, Arrow Shirt and Firchburg Yarn. Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Max S. Fisher, in 1975. She was also predeceased by her second husband of 15 years, Anders E. Anderson, in 1994. Her stepdaughter, Edith Lilius, also predeceased her. Her cat and best friend, Muffin, survives Mrs. Anderson. She is also survived by three daughters, Barbara Gummerus of Ashby, Mass., Nancy Marshall of Parker, Pa., and Sandra Faassen of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Thelma Caouette of Ashburnham, Mass., and Dorothy Andreucci of Fitchburg, Mass.; two sons, Robert Fisher of St. Petes Beach, Fla., and Ronald Fisher of Ruskin, Fla.; one stepson, Sidney Fisher of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Irene Scavelli of Florida; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. , 84, formerly of Blaney Road, Littleton, N.H., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Littleton Regional Hospital, of natural causes. He was born in Littleton Nov. 8, 1917, a son of Edgar O. and Sarah J. (Curran) Baker. Kermit was born on the Baker Farm on Route 135. He moved to Apthorp in 1935 and was a lifelong resident of the community. He married Doris E. Boulay in 1937; they were married for 58 years. Mr. Baker worked for Bill McDonald as a truck driver from 1936-1946, Curran Construction from 1948-1953, and for 30 years for Doane Oil of Littleton, from 1954-1984, the year of his retirement. He will be missed by his family and all who came to know him over the years. Surviving family members include three sons, Richard K., Harry F. and Thomas J. Baker; a daughter, Nancy Stapleton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a brother, Harry. His wife, a son, a brother and a sister predeceased him. , 73, a longtime resident of Lunenburg, Vt., died peacefully at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Jeanne Webb of Newington, Conn., on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. Clint was a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired teamster. He volunteered his time with various organizations over the years, and was a member of the American Legion. Clint will be especially remembered for the unconditional love he gave to his family and friends, his wonderful sense of humor and his love of fishing. Clint is also survived by his wife Ellen, his son and daughter-in-law Clint Jr. and Claudette Webb of Essex, Conn.; his stepchildren, Faith Francis of Yalesville, Conn., Louis Casserino of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Diane Beggs of Yarmouth, Mass.; six grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews. He was born in Providence, R.I., Oct. 18, 1909, the son of Royal and Anna (Carpenter) (Spicer) Gladding Sr. A graduate of Clark University, Mr. Gladding had several areas of interest, including work for the Regional Library and the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. Mr. Gladding was a great hiker, especially in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he had climbed the Presidential Range several times. , 85, of St. Johnsbury, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, following a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Orange, N.J., the son of Albert and Florence (Stark) Howard. Albert married Florence Jarlett Bodo. He was a salesman for Sears and Roebuck Co. in St. Johnsbury from 1954 until he joined 3M and Durotest Lights in the 1960s. He is survived by his wife, Florence, of St. Johnsbury; a step-daughter, Andrea Bodo-Burns of Durham, N.H.; and a sister, Eleanor Hennion of Morris Plains, N.J. , 90, a resident of the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, with her family at her side. After her husband's death she moved back to St. Johnsbury to be close to her family. Survivors include a son, Robert L. Pelkey of St. Johnsbury; a grandson, Michael Pelkey of Bradford; step-grandchildren Tiffany and Chad Lumbra of Danville, and Brian Carpenter of Greensboro; and daughters-in-law Elaine Pelkey of Lyndonville and Elaine Pelkey of Greensboro. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Leon E. Pelkey, in 1991; her grandson Robert Leon Pelkey in 1997; and her son, David E. Pelkey, in 1998. There will be no services. , formerly of Sutton, died Friday morning, Dec. 14, 2001, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, at the age of 82. She was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Sutton, the daughter of Ercil and Mabel (Whipple) Hodge. She attended local schools and received her bachelor's degree in education from Lyndon State College. On Aug. 27, 1942, she married Warren D. Fox. Mrs. Fox was a teacher for 32 years, spending 22 of those years at the Lyndonville Graded School. She also was a teacher in Sutton, St. Johnsbury and Peru, Vt. After retirement she and her husband wintered in Bushnell, Fla., and spent summers in Sutton. She had been a member of the Sutton Baptist Church, the Retired Teachers Association and the Green Mountain Grange. Mrs. Fox loved children. Helping and teaching them brought her great joy. She also enjoyed making pottery, gardening and was known as a great cook. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Warren Fox of Sutton and Florida; her sister, Catherine Hatcher of Lyndonville; her brother and his wife, Burton and Pearl Hodge of Sutton; her sister-in-law, Geneva Harris of Lyndon Center; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating. Friends and former students may meet with the family beginning at 1 p.m. through the start of the service. Burial will be in Sutton Village Cemetery in the spring. , 29, of Greensboro Bend, died at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, following an automobile accident. He was born in Newport, July 29, 1972, the son of Robert P. and Rebecca (Perry) Hall. He attended grade school in Greensboro and one year at Hazen Union School in Hardwick. He was employed seasonally as a cutter, clearing power lines, most recently for Farr's Tree Service, and in the winters he logged with his brother Rick Hall. An avid race fan, he was a member of the pit crew for Pete Fecteau's racing team. He also enjoyed hunting and most of all spending time with his children. He leaves his parents, Robert P. and Rebecca Hall of Greensboro Bend; a son, Ryan Hall, 8, and a daughter, Renea Hall, 6, both of Hardwick; the mother of his children, Diane Drown, of Hardwick; five brothers, Ricky and his wife Della, Roland and his wife Barbara, and Ronald and his wife Michelle, all of Greensboro Bend, Raymond and his wife Pearl of Groton, and Romain of Hardwick; two sisters, Robin Hall of Hardwick, and Rhoda and her husband Jeff Barnet of Stannard; a maternal grandmother, Aileen Moodie of Lyndonville; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. 85, of Pleasant Street, Newport, Vt., passed away peacefully in Newport Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001. He was born in Newport May 16, 1916, the son of Warren B. Sr. and Ruth A. (Lake) Drown. Jersey graduated from Newport High School and received an associate's degree in forestry from Penn State College. He was a self-employed forester for the past 20 years, and worked part-time at the Morrisville Water & Light. He also served as forester for the following organizations: Orleans County Forester, Blair-Veneer, Atlas Plywood, North American Philips, and the Newport City Tree Warden. Jersey was a member of the Society of American Foresters, Vermont Land Surveyors, United Church of Newport, Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, the board of Vermont Wood Land Owners Association, and Masonic Lodge Memphremagog 65 F & AM. On Dec. 10, 1938, Jersey married the former Gertrude Hall, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Ruth Richard and husband Mike of Newport; his son, Charles Drown and wife Virginia of Newport Center; his grandchildren, Chuck Drown Jr. and wife Sue, Michael Morey and wife Shelly, Kristin Morey, and Sara Richard; his brother, Colin Drown and wife Elizabeth of Conway, N.H.; his great-granddaughter, Jenna Morey; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Bob served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a machinist at Northeast Tool Co. in Lyndonville, retiring in 1986. He was a 50-year member and former commander of the American Legion Barton Post 76. Bob loved the outdoors and going fishing and gardening. Lately he enjoyed reading. On May 15, 1946, Bob married the former Carolyn Baird, who survives him. He is also survived by his sons, Donald Gray of Springfield, and Ronald Gray and wife Elaine of Waterford; his grandchildren, Christopher and Meghan of Waterford; his brother, Roger Gray and wife Barbara of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ralph and Roland. He was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Littleton, a son of George K. and Susan (Dodge) Farr. He grew up in Littleton and attended schools here; Kimball graduated from Littleton High School, Class of 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Previous to his retirement he was employed with Ingersoll Rand as a heat transfer machinist, and earlier for Millers Falls Tools as a hardener. Surviving family members include his wife of 52 years, Alberta Farr of Littleton; a son, George K. Farr of Northfield, Mass.; and a daughter, Arlene B. Farr of Greenfield, Mass. , 71, of 5997 West Fall Road, Lake Worth, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglas Hospital, Dover, N.H., following a short illness. She was born in Whitefield, N.H., June 15, 1930, the daughter of Alphonse and Alice (Gay) Boswell. She was a graduate of the former Whitefield High School. She then attended nursing school in Laconia, graduating as a registered nurse. She married Gerald Woodburn in 1955 and raised five children. She enjoyed a long, rewarding career as a registered nurse at the Life Care Retirement Home in Delray Beach, Fla., prior to her retirement last December. Geraldine will be held in countless hearts and will always be remembered as someone who put others first. She is survived by her mother, Alice Boswell of Rochester, N.H.; a son, Gerald "Dusty" Woodburn of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four daughters, Denise Woodburn of Lake Worth, Fla., Elizabeth Woodburn-Hurst and Tracie Woodburn, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Audrey King of Lancaster, N.H.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Boswell and Edward Boswell, both of Whitefield; three sisters, Una Lewis and Mary Rodrigue, both of Rochester, N.H., and Ruby Haefner of Dorchester, Mass.; several nieces and nephews; and her devoted friend Robert Williams of Lyman, N.H. , 72, of Island Pond, passed away in St. Johnsbury Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. She was born in Rock Island, Quebec, Canada, March 8, 1929, the daughter of Harold Burton and Esther Ellen (Alexander) LeBaron. Edythe attended Derby Academy and Stanstead College. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship of the First Congregational Church of Island Pond and treasurer for 20 years. Edythe was a beloved mother and grandmother, and spent her life devoted to her family. On June 15, 1946, Edythe married George Harry Copp, who predeceased her in 1971. She is survived by her daughter, Doreen Billig and husband Michael of St. Johnsbury; her son, Robert Harry Copp and wife Sylvia of Nashville, Ga.; her grandsons, Paul Gray and companion Kathy LeClair of Island Pond, and Travis Niles Gray of Burlington; her sister, Beverly Wright and husband Cecil of Sanford, Fla.; and her great-granddaughter, Allison Wendy Gray. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Wendy Gray, and by her companion, Pete Kirkland. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Island Pond, with the Rev. Roger Fletcher officiating. , of St. Johnsbury, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 77 years. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Feb. 8, 1924, the son of Donald and Millicent (Jacques) Gosselin. Mr. Gosselin served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. A longtime employee of Fairbanks Scales, Mr. Gosselin was a member of American Legion No. 58 and VFW Post 793, both of St. Johnsbury. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially enjoyed helping other people. Survivors include three sisters: Gertrude Simons of West Burke, Louise Smith of Manchester, N.H., and Gloria Robillard of Brownington; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Maurice Gosselin in 1994, and a sister Irene Gosselin in 1942. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, Monday, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m. Spring burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There will be no public visiting hours. , 79, of Birch Street, Island Pond, passed away at North Country Hospital in Newport Friday, Dec. 21, 2001. He was born in Island Pond on Jan. 18, 1922, the son of the late Harold J. and Mary (Foss) Kennedy. He was also predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Thomas (Phyllis) Gustenhoven of Melrose, Mass. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1938 and McGill University with a B.A. in 1942 and with a D.D.S. in 1950. He also attended Princeton and New York University. He served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean conflict. After graduating from the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga. in World War II, he served as an officer in the Pacific Theater, and during the Korean conflict he served as a dental officer at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. and other posts. Returning to Island Pond in 1952, Dr. Kennedy practiced dentistry there until 1967, when he was appointed postmaster of Island Pond by President Lyndon B. Johnson. He retired in 1984. While in private practice he served as town representative from Brighton in 1959 and 1961, and as the last Essex County senator in 1965. He also served in the administration of Governor Philip Hoff as Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs. A lifelong communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, he was a Post Grand Knight of St. James Council No. 2495, Knights of Columbus, a founding member of the Island Pond Historical Society, and a member of Vermont Post No. 80 of the American Legion. He is survived by his brother, John D. Kennedy of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews and their families, all whose love he deeply cherished. There will be no calling hours. , 67, Cemetery Street, Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the Littleton Regional Hospital hospice room surrounded by her family. She was born in Littleton, Sept. 1, 1934, the daughter of Stuart and Madelene (Farr) Dexter. She graduated at the top of her class in 1952 and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her peers. She then attended Plymouth Teaching College. She made her life as a homemaker and bookkeeper for her husband's business. Ruth dedicated her life to her family and the communities of Littleton and Bethlehem. Her house was always open to her children's friends for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a cookie, brownie or whoopee pie. She helped form the Cooperative Church School in Littleton, was a den mother for Cub Scout Troop 209, a member of the Emma Merrill Guild, and taught Sunday school. In 1977 the family moved to Bethlehem and she began giving of herself in the Bethlehem Elementary School, Profile High, Bethlehem Library, town offices, Durrell Methodist Church, Heritage Society, Bethlehem Redevelopment Association, Chamber of Commerce, Open for the Season, Bicentennial, Child and Family Services, Bethlehem Alumni and many more organizations. She was also the Bethlehem news correspondent for the Courier. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Theron W. "Bud" Miller Sr.; four sons, Theron W. Miller Jr. and his wife Karen of Seaconk, Mass., Warren Miller and his wife Jill of Bethlehem, David Miller and his wife Tina of Littleton, John Miller of Bethlehem; five grandchildren, Kimberly, Jill, Heather, Michael and Matthew; two sisters, Mary Louise Grandmaison and husband Paul of Suncook, Gwendolyn Cantara and husband Robert of Alexandria; and several nieces, nephews, and her "adopted children." , 77, of Orleans, died suddenly, Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, in Newport. He was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Farnham, Quebec, Canada, a son of Conrad and Ida (Remillard) Choiniere. Mr. Choiniere was manager of Whiting Creamery of Irasburg, a representative of Old Fox Chemical and a retired salesman from Northeast Agricultural Sales and Service of Lyndonville. On June 6, 1945, he married the former Ruby Racine, who survives him. He was a member of St. Theresa's Church of Orleans, past president of Orleans County Rod and Gun Club, past president of Orleans Lions Club, a former NRA Hunter Safety Instructor, and a past member of the Vermont Trappers Association. Mr. Choiniere sponsored a children's fishing derby at his pond for several years and he enjoyed numerous trips hunting and fishing in Northern Canada. He was also an avid sportsman who enjoyed the out-of-doors, trapping and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Choiniere of Orleans; his children, James A. Choiniere of West Burke, John M. Choiniere of Brownington, Jean McAuliffe of Brattleboro, Jackie Slaiby of Derby, and Janet Goodine of Lyneboro, N.H.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Gaston Choiniere of Fredericksburg, Va.; a sister, Bella Collette of Sturbridge, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Inverness, Quebec, Canada, Nov. 21, 1906, the son of Irving and Margaret (Marshall) Little. He was a 65-year resident of McIndoes and was employed in farming, with the state of Vermont Highway Department, Trumbull Nelson Construction of Hanover, N.H., and prior to retirement he was employed at the former East Ryegate Paper Mill. He had also delivered The Caledonian-Record newspaper. Mr. Little was predeceased by his wife Gertrude (McCrea) Little on Oct. 23, 1981. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Towle and husband David of Lisbon, N.H., and Joan Kinney of Woodsville, N.H.; a son, Clifton Little and wife Bonnie of Lyndon; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 81, of 75 Blake St., Newport, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at her home, surrounded by members of her family. She was born at home in Orleans March 19, 1920, a daughter of Grant and Heavenia (Davis) Hussey. She married Gerard Rivard Sr. June 14, 1940; he predeceased her Feb. 1, 1991. Doris "Marjorie" was a feisty woman who knew her own mind. She had a good sense of humor and plenty of common sense. She was a loving wife and a devoted, caring mother and grandmother. She accepted death and completed her life on earth with courage and grace. Mrs. Rivard was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Newport, and the Daughters of Isabella. , 100, of St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the Don-Secours Maria Manor Nursing Home in St. Petersburg. She was born Dec. 28, 1900, in Hardwick, the daughter of the late Dana and Kate (Williams) Cowles. Her husband, Michael Agger, predeceased her in October 1993. Before retiring, she worked as an interior decorator for hotels. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the spring of 2002.

, 68, of St. Johnsbury, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Sept. 3, 1933, the daughter of Harold and Roselba (DuBois) Dutton. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1952, Beverly worked in human services for the state of Vermont in St. Johnsbury for over 25 years. Mrs. Bennett was very fond of crafts, enjoyed cooking and loved animals, especially her dogs. On May 9, 1953, she married Ronald Bennett, who survives her in St. Johnsbury. Other survivors include two sons and wives, Michael and Lise Bennett of Lyndonville, and Patrick and Marguerite Bennett of Waterford; a sister, Doreen Teachout of St. Johnsbury; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. , 85, former St. Johnsbury businessman, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at his Brightlook residence. He and his wife Pearl (Abberbock) were longtime residents at the former Burrows place off South Street in St. Johnsbury. Together they operated the Jeanette Shop on Railroad Street for 32 years, until their retirement in 1978. Pearl died Nov. 26, 1985; he missed her dearly. Harris especially enjoyed his Friday business luncheon group. He was a supporter of Beth El Synagogue, member and avid golfer at the St. Johnsbury Country Club, a longtime Rotarian, and a World War II army veteran. He is survived by a brother-in-law; and nieces and nephews. He also leaves many friends who enjoyed his wit and easy manner. Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery (those attending should enter through the lower gate across from Gilmour Ford). A light lunch and fellowship will follow at Beth El Synagogue. , 81, of 75 Blake St., Newport, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at her home, surrounded by members of her family. She was born at home in Orleans March 19, 1920, a daughter of Grant and Heavenia (Davis) Hussey. She married Gerard Rivard Sr. June 14, 1940; he predeceased her Feb. 1, 1991. Doris "Marjorie" was a feisty woman who knew her own mind. She had a good sense of humor and plenty of common sense. She was a loving wife and a devoted, caring mother and grandmother. She accepted death and completed her life on earth with courage and grace. Mrs. Rivard was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Newport, and the Daughters of Isabella. He sang solos in New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. He was a member of the Lyndonville United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking and cabinetmaking. Before retiring, he worked for 20 years as a tool and die designer for ETCO in Warwick, R.I. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Brown) Holton of Sutton; his children, William A. and Stephanie Holton of St. Petersburg, Fla., Franklin O. and Debra Rose III of Warwick, R.I., Susanne J. Rose and Michael Sylce of Burke Hollow, and Thomas W.F. Rose and Kelli LaPoint of Warwick, R.I.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Nancy Holton Keller and husband William of Chepachet, R.I., and several cousins. , 68, of Derby, beloved husband of Jean McKenny, died suddenly, Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Lebanon, N.H. He was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Newport, a son of Gordon and Dorothy (Baker) McKenny. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. On April 18, 1964, he married the former Jean Lawson, who survives him. Mr. McKenny was a licensed Customhouse broker for C.S. Emery & Company, where he served as president. In 1986 the company was sold to John V. Carr & Son, where Stan retired in 1991 as vice president of Vermont operations. Stan loved playing the game of golf and was a former club champion. He was a member of the Newport Country Club Board of Directors, recent member of the Old Stone House Board of Directors, current member of the Lyndonville Savings Bank Advisory Board, and former member of the Board of the Dailey Memorial Library. He was a charter member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Newport Lodge 2155, Veterans of Foreign Wars 798, the Newport Country Club, and former member of the Derby Lions Club. In 1989, Stan became Potentate of Mt. Sinai Temple 3, founding member of the Mt. Sinai Fire Brigade, past Potentates Organization Cabiri, Montpelier Court 151, Royal Order of Jesters, Newport Masonic Lodge F & AM 65, and the York Rite Bodies of Vermont. Besides his wife, Jean McKenny, he is survived by his sons, Derek S. McKenny and girlfriend Amanda J. Hill of Atlanta, Ga., and Ian A. McKenny of Boston, Mass.; his mother, Dorothy McKenny of Newport; a grandchild, Madison L. McKenny of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers Ronald McKenny and wife Sandra of Newport, and Douglas McKenny and wife Sara of Newport Center; two aunts, Esther Knowlton and husband Calvin of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mary Baker of Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 76, of Pudding Hill, Lyndon, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Johnsbury. He was born June 8, 1925, in Enfield, Conn., the son of Daniel A. and Louise (Fortier) Garvey. Dan was a waste water treatment plant operator, working in Michigan and later operating the plant in Lyndon for several years. He also worked as a consulting engineer. He was a member of the Detroit Engineering Society. He is survived by his wife, Marion W. Garvey of Lyndon; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two sisters. Mrs. Bellville was born April 28, 1913, in Danville, the daughter of the late William McNaughton and Florence E. McNaughton. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a graduate of Lowell Commercial College in Massachusetts. , 97, of Hardwick, formerly of Greensboro, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at her Hardwick residence. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 30, 1904, in Derby, the daughter of Lewis E. and Cora (Hanley) Atherton. She attended Greensboro public schools, and graduated from Greensboro High School, Class of 1924. She married Claude "Bill" Collier in 1936 in Craftsbury. Gretta was employed as a domestic in the Greensboro area, and for many years she was employed at the Greensboro Nursing Home. She retired in 1971. Gretta was always happy to see her family. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, bingo and visiting with her new friends at the Maple Street Apartments. Survivors include a daughter, Guila Winn of Lyndonville; two sons, Richard Collier and his wife Dot of Glover, and Thomas Collier and his companion Shirley of Craftsbury Common; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Claude in 1967; a daughter, Patricia Thompson in 1969; and three brothers, Roy Atherton, Perle Atherton and Bernie Atherton. To honor her request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the Greensboro Village Cemetery in the spring. , passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her home at 340 Summer St. in St. Johnsbury. She was born in North Concord, Vt., Feb. 6, 1935, the daughter of Goldie Baird Lynaugh and Harland Lynaugh. She married Howard Earle Eldred Feb. 21, 1952, in Lunenburg; he predeceased her May 13, 1999. They were longtime residents of St. Johnsbury and celebrated 47 years of marriage together. She had five siblings, Archie Lynaugh, Viola McNan, Leona Nichols, Mary Lynaugh and Irene Bishop. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Eldred; and grandson, Zachary Farmer, of Burlington; her great-aunt, Violet Baird Mattheau; sisters Leona Nichols of Windsor, Vt., and Irene Bishop and husband Lee of Concord, Vt.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer St., St. Johnsbury, Thursday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the spring in the South Victory cemetery. 78, of Mt. Gardner Apartments, Woodsville, N.H., died Monday, Dec. 23, 2001, at her residence. She was born May 28, 1923, in Lyndonville, the daughter of Harold B. and Stella Mae (Harriman) Crapo. "Bunny" was a longtime resident of Mt. Gardner Apartments and ran Bunny's Little Corner Store and worked at the thrift store, both located in the Mt. Gardner building. She also cleaned and would run errands for Allen Nickerson. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Little, Feb. 11, 1981. Surviving relatives include a brother, Russell Crapo of Whitefield, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours.
