, age 85, died Tuesday evening, September 12, 2000 in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, following a period of declining health. He was born December 16, 1914 in St. Alphonse de Granby, P.Q., Canada, the son of the late Albert & Lydia (Dragon) Parent. He moved with his family to Vermont in 1920, and resided in Berkshire and Enosburg most of his life, and for the last 5 and one half ars he made his home with his son and daughter-in-law in St. Albans. He owned and operated the former Marvin Farm in East Berkshire from 1943 to 1963. For the next 30 years, he operated a waste hauling business in Enosburg Falls, one he purchased from his father, a family enterprise that endured for almost 50 years. Having to retire at the age of 78 due to ill health, Lionel’s always cheerful smile and wave was missed by many longtime patrons. His interests included gardening and watching any discussion of politics on television, especially any oration by a democrat. A Roosevelt Democrat to the core, he would always take great satisfaction if a democrat bested a republican in a national election; taking on an almost Red Sox-Yankee fan’s fervor. He married Freida Larivee in 1942, she predeceased him in 1981. He is survived by 2 sons, and their wives, Lionel A. & Carol Parent of Clinton, Mass., and Leonard J. & Dianne Parent of St. Albans; 5 grandchildren, Pamela Silvester of Tampa, Fla., John Parent of Clinton, Mass., Lee Audra Parent of Worcester, Mass. Erikalynn Parent, a Peace Corps volunteer serving in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and L.J. Parent of St. Albans; a great-granddaughter, Mariah Silvester; 2 brothers, Rosaire Parent and his wife, Marjorie of St. Albans, and Guy Parent of Burlington; 3 sisters and their husbands, Anita & Leon Godin of Johnson, Theresa & Frank Perry of Enosburg Falls, and Monica & Paul Racine of Essex Junction; 2 sisters-in-law, Simone Parent of St. Paul, Minn., and Mary Parent of Enosburg Falls. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by 3 brothers, twins, Gerald & Gerard Parent and Paul Parent; 1 sister-in-law, Anna Parent. , 83, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 with his family at his side. He was born July 1, 1917 in Burlington the son of George and Mary (Bleau) Smith. For many years, he worked as a truck driver and mechanic, retiring after twenty plus years of service from International Harvester. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris (Peters) and their four children, Joan Upson, Floyd T. Jr. ("Tom"), Dana and Debbie Jones; two grandsons, Michael and Benjamin; two granddaughters, Kim with son, Christopher Ross, Jill and Kevin with daughter, Kaitlin and son, Kevin Thomas; his sisters, Ida Hall and Marjorie Cassalla; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Gina Merleni; as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who had a special love for his deer camp and all his hunting buddies. Each spring, he looked forward to sugaring. He was a remarkable man who touched many lives. He could fix anything and would do anything to help anyone who needed it. He was well liked, respected, loved and admired by all. He will forever be in our hearts and will be deeply missed. , age 38, of Johnson, died peacefully after a short illness with her family by her side Wednesday September 13, 2000 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born August 10, 1962 the daughter of Robert and Patricia (Estabrook) DeRose. She attended grade school at the Peoples Academy, and graduated from Lamoille Union High School in 1980. Penny worked at Johnson State College as a bookkeeper, and Immediate Care, and Copley Hospital as patient registrar and a receptionist. She was an avid reader and a very talented crafts person who was very outgoing and well liked by everyone who knew her. She was always there to extend a helping hand to others in need. She is survived by her parents; Robert and Patricia DeRose of South Burlington, two brothers; Joel and his wife Kiristen Hoyt of Gilsum, New Hampshire, Timothy and his wife Wendy DeRose of North Wolcott, and several nieces and nephews. , 84, of Williston, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Ohio on January 3, 1916 the son of the late Clarence E. and Maude A. (Hartzler) Detweiler. He was the husband of Mary Louise (Messner) who predeceased him in May of 1995. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Barbara and Doug Mongeon of Rolla, North Dakota, Carol and Doug Parker of Williston, and Rebecca and Robert Essex of Landover Hills, Maryland; four grandchildren, Brad and Mary-Margaret Parker and John and Hilary Essex. , 91, of Charlotte Street, died Sept. 13, 2000 after a brief illness. He was born March 12, 1909, in Swanton, son of the late Morton and Nellie (Garvin) Jennison. Ken married Hilda Richardson in 1933. They recently celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary. He graduated from Burlington High School and then went to work for the former Burlington Grocery Company. He remained with them for 51 years until his retirement in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Hilda; daughters, Kathryn Cimini of Pittsfield, Mass., and Elizabeth and her husband, William Adams of Essex Junction. Grampa will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren; Mark, Kathryn, Robert, and Michelle, Christine and Kyle and their families, including 10 great-grandchildren. Ken was a man with a great sense of humor and a lot of energy, who enjoyed talking over the days events with the neighbors in his daily walks on Charlotte Street, and at his summer camp on Thompson’s Point. He enjoyed working on projects at his house and camp, where he had a unique way of making things work. He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church, the Shriners and the Barber Shoppers. He was also the recipient of a Community Arts Program Award presented by the Burlington City Arts Council for creating the Growling Pup Theatre, a summer long theatre festival. , 54, died unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon, September 14, 2000 in Copley Hospital, Morrisville. Bernie was born in Barre on June 10, 1946. He was raised in Hyde Park, however, by his parents, Euretta and Howard Smith, who have predeceased him. A 1965 graduate of Lamoille Central Academy, Bernie participated in school sports and attended Green Mountain Boys State in 1964. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving until 1969. Upon returning from the service, he married the former Eva M. Bedell on April 11, 1970. Bernie was a highly skilled and recognized electrician in northern Vermont. He was employed by Delta Electric for 30 years, until recently joining Hegeman Electric in Burlington. Physical activities were always things that Bernie loved to be involved in, especially hunting and fishing. His camp in Garfield was his special place. Even to be out berry picking brought Bernie satisfaction and contentment. Bernie also loved sports, and was a big Red Sox fan. Besides his wife, Eva, he is survived by his son, Quint L. Bapp, and his wife, Karie; his faithful and loving dog, Mae; sisters, Hilda Tallman and Rhoda Reed and her husband, Clifford; a brother, Donald Smith and his wife, Edith; a predeceased brother, Robert Smith, in Jan. of 2000; his birth mother, Beula Smith; 4 other sisters, Brenda Wells, Debbie Webb and her husband, Larry, Barbie White and her husband, David, and Beverly Allen and her husband, Richard; his mother-in-law, Edna Bedell; 2 sisters-in-law, Rhoda Bedell and friend, Leon Whitcomb, and Barbara Darrah and her husband, David; several nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. During her lifetime she was an avid gardener while also enjoying swimming and dancing. She is survived by her two daughters Mindy (Blanchard) Carlson of Burlington and her partner Thomas Dion and Cindie (Blanchard) Davis and her husband Dean of Jericho. She is also survived by one grandchild Anthony P. Johnston and his wife, Vicki-Anne and their son Jason T. Johnston of Columbus, Georgia and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Richards of Norfolk, N.Y. along with several nephews and their families. , age 91, who passed away Friday evening, September 15, 2000 at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, will be held Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at 3 p.m. at the Middlebury Congregational Church. The Rev. David Andrews, Pastor, and other clergy will co-officiate. He was born July 1, 1909 in Cranbury, N.J., a son of William J. and Jennie (Bowers) Campbell. He studied at Rutgers University, the University of Vermont, and the University of Missouri, where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree. He obtained a Master of Divinity Degree from Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1937, followed by a Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and graduate studies at Cambridge University in England. During this time, he met Charlotte Emma Morris, whom he married in New Hampshire on August 31, 1934. From 1938 until 1945, Dr. Campbell served three Presbyterian churches in the Pittsburgh, Pa. area. From 1945 until his retirement in 1975, Dr. Campbell served as pastor for the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, Conn. During this period, he served the Presbyterian denomination in various local and national capacities, and many community organizations in the Stamford area. Following his retirement in 1975, the couple moved to Weybridge, from where Dr. Campbell served as interim pastor for various parishes in the area. He was a member of the Rotary Clubs in both Middlebury and Stamford, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his sons, the Rev. William Campbell and his wife Carol, of Circleville, Ohio; David Campbell and his wife Cuc of Medford, Mass; and D. Bruce Campbell of Rutland; his grandchildren, Catherine Campbell Wright and her husband Aaron, Elizabeth Campbell, Donald Campbell, Tram Campbell, and Trang Campbell; and his great-granddaughter, Anna Wright. He was predeceased by seven siblings. , 69, formerly of 230 St. Paul St. died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 in Burlington Health and Rehabilitation. She was born the second child of Cecil and Katherine (Tierney) Goodheart on May 7, 1931 in Moretown. Growing up involved much moving, many schools, and a very restricted life-style. She graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1949 with high honors. Marion received advanced degrees in elementary education from Johnson Teacher’s College in 1963. She received two master’s degrees in educating exceptional people, in psychology as a counselor and therapist, and a PhD in philosophy. She was always employed in educational positions, moving on from classroom teaching to supervisory, coordinator, and consultant positions. Her fiance, Dr. Martin Poirer, was killed in Vietnam in 1972. Marion was professed as a Carmelite Lay Sister. She chose the name Sister Mary Joseph of the Holy Family. Her ministry was love and care of children and their families. A committal service will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery, Duxbury, 3 blocks from where she was born, on Saturday September 30, 2000 at 1 p.m. Her monument reads "And so with joy into the allness of God. , 81, of 72 Heineberg Road, Burlington, died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Rita was born in Winooski on April 1, 1919, daughter of the late Vitalien and Angelina (Ducharme) Landry. She was married in Winooski in 1938 to Melvin Morris, who predeceased her on March 20, 1995. Rita is survived by two daughters, Karen Mullen and her husband, Peter of Colchester and Nancy Houle and her husband, Ray of Henderson, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey, Timothy and James Mullen, Karen DeLano, Lori Newton and Anne Houle; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Gertrude Landry, Eleanor Raymond, Ramona Frattarola and Evelyn Hyder; and by several nieces and nephews. Rita was predeceased by three brothers, Albert Landry, Arthur Landry, and Ernest Landry; and by four sisters, Dora Houle, Louisa Brisson, Florence Ahern, and Irene Franze. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 18, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Burlington, with interment to follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Winooski. Visiting hours will be on Monday, September 18, 2000 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main Street, Winooski.

died Saturday morning, September 16, in the Palouse Hills Nursing Center in Pullman, Wash., after a long illness. Mrs. Snow was a longtime resident of Burlington. Born in Pullman, Wash. May 27, 1913, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington State University, receiving a B.A. degree in Languages and was active in Kappa Alpha Theta. Mrs. Snow worked for many years as an editor in the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service. She married Albert G. Snow, Jr., also from Wash. state, and a graduate of Washington State University, on July 9, 1935. Mr. Snow was associated with the U.S. Forest Service and was prominent in maple research in Burlington. Mrs. Snow leaves two daughters, Susan Snow Collins in Boynton Beach, Fla. and Elizabeth Snow Flynn in Millsboro, Del.; along with a sister, Barbara Johnson of Pullman; a two brothers, Greg Neill of Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Tom Neill, Sr. of Pullman. She also leaves five grandchildren; Ian Schmidt, in the 8th grade in Boynton Beach, Larry Ball in Glenview, Ill., Karen Jordan in Tuxedo, N.C., Kathy Ball in Cary, N.C., Diane Silverman in Seattle, and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Snow was a long-time member of the Baptist Church in Burlington. Mrs. Snow’s dry with, keen sense of humor, and sparkling laugh were a tonic for all. She was a kind, compassionate person, a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She leaves a priceless legacy of love, compassion, and spiritual nourishment to all that were privileged to know her. Her extraordinary strength buoyed up countless people along the way, including her family and all that called on her for attention of assistance. She touched many lives and made them better, even as she lay ill herself. She wa and remains, "the wind beneath our wings", and will be truly missed. We send her on her way with undying gratitude and hearts filled with love and remembrance for all that she did for us. As her ship sails over the horizon and goes out of sight, we are saying goodbye and, "There she goes" … at the same time, on the other shore, many excited voices exclaim, "Here she comes!" , 74, died following a long and courageous struggle on Sunday morning, September 17, 2000 in Copley Hospital in Morrisville, with his family by his side. He was born in Eden on Sept. 6, 1926, the son of Nathan and Ethel (McNally) Adams. On October 12, 1948, Alden married the former Mary Mudgett. Alden was employed at the asbestos mines in Lowell for many years before becoming a self employed carpenter. His greatest joy in his life was his family. He participated in many outdoor activities with them, such as hunting, spending many seasons at deer camp, ice fishing, and camping. He also had a good time with his many friends. He enjoyed dancing, and playing cards. A major part of his time was his devotion to his Masonic life. Alden was a 53 year member of Mt. Norris Lodge #69 F.& A.M., and a member of Mt. Sinai Temple A.A.O.N.M.A. of Montpelier, Vt., Scottish Rite, Valley of Burlington, and Coral Chapter #16 O.E.S, Morrisville. Alden served as District Deputy for the Masons and Order of the Eastern Star. He also held the offices of Grand Junior Deacon and Grand Tyler in Grand Lodge of Vermont F. & A.M. Serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Alden belonged to V.F.W. Post 9653, Morrisville. He was also a member of the Eden Congregational Church. Besides his wife, Mary, he is survived by five children and their spouses, Carol Hayden and E. Nate, Judy Morse and Stephen, Scott Adams and Michele, all of Hyde Park, Lloyd Adams and Lori of Waterville, and Brenda McKinney and Dennis of Woodbridge, Va.; a special niece and her husband, Sharon and James Hall of Morrisville; 14 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. A memorial service and Masonic services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the Eden Congregational Church, with committal services following in the Eden Corners Cemetery. , 70, a lifelong St. Albans resident, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday afternoon, September 17, 2000. He was born in St. Albans December 30, 1929, the son of the late Lee F. and Alvina (Raymond) Bronson. Joe was a retired postal clerk at the St. Albans Post Office, where he worked for 30 years, retiring March 1, 1986. On September 25, 1999 in Franklin, he married Nancy J. Anderson, who survives him. His first wife, former St. Albans City Clerk and Treasurer, Patricia (Magnant) Bronson, died January 20, 1993. Joe was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Army from 1948 to 1951, earning the Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars. He then served full time in the Vermont National Guard from 1953 to 1959, and retired from the National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1969, after more than 20 years of service. He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1948, and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a Past Commander, Finance Officer, 50 year and Life member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion, a member for 41 years of St. Albans Lodge #1566, BPOE, a life member of Robert E. Glidden Post 758, VFW, and belonged to Voiture 786, 40 & 8 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Joe was instrumental in the organization of the American Legion’s involvement in "Operation Happiness", where he served as Financial Officer. He was also a proud donor to the American Red Cross Blood Bank, where he gave more than 20 gallons. Following his retirement from Postal Service, Joe worked as a courier for A.N. Deringer, Inc. Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy of St. Albans; his two sons and their wives, Tom and Gloria Bronson of Milton, and William J. and Suzanne Bronson of St. Albans; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Glenn Wilson, formerly of Williston, now of Bradenton, Fla. He also leaves a brother and three sisters, Robert and his wife, Faith Bronson of Rouses Pt., N.Y., Barbara Soule of Lakewood, Fla., Ruth Miller of Avon, N.Y., and Avis Maynard of St. Albans; sisters-in-law, Barbara and her husband, Vic Dubanevich of Springfield, Vt., Jane Magnant of St. Albans, and Jean Magnant of Maple Glen, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, Hale, Jordana, Kimberly, and Kyle Bronson, and Jessica, Rachel, and Sara Cioffi. He also leaves five step-children, their spouses and children, Christopher and Cathy Anderson, Stephen and Martha Anderson, Jennifer and David Hauck, Sarah and Ted Gilbert and Rebecca and William Mattoon; also a close cousin, Cassie Nutter of St. Albans, other cousins, many special nieces and nephews, and his Thursday morning coffee partner, Cindy Nye. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. , 84, passed away September 17, 2000, after a short illness. He was born in Richmond, Vt. on January 4, 1916. He was the son of the late Charles and Caroline Emmons. Ernest grew up on the farm, then became a logger and mill worker for over 30 years. At age 50, he became self employed in the rubbish removal business, until he was in his 70′s. During all those years, Ernest fished, hunted, trapped and rvested ginseng to further enrich his life and the lives of his family. Ernest is survived by his wife, Mae (Nattress) Emmons. They were married in 1936 and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Ernest is survived by his 7 children, Paul and his wife, ArLouine, Robert, Rand, and his wife, Joanne, Linda and her husband, Lynn Ramsey, Gerald and his wife, Shirley, Yvonne and her husband, William Carney, and Conrad and his wife, Lucille. Ernest is survived by two brothers, Leo and his wife, Margarete of Va., Herbert and his wife, Earlene of N.H.; four sisters, Mildred French, Ila Pecor, Mary Sears, and Sylvia Bradford. Ernest was predeceased by his brothers, Earl Sr., Melvin, Clinton, Sr. and Clifford. His sisters, Louella Garvey and Viola Emmons. He is survived by his brother-in-law, George Nattress, and sisters-in-law, Margaret Linehan and Grace Cole. Ernest was very proud of his 28 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. On behalf of our family, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the VNA women, who helped Ernest care for our mother, Mae during her illness. , (known affectionately as "Jule") of Colchester, died on Sunday, September 17, 2000, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. She was 92 years old. Jule was born in Cape Cod, Mass. on May 11, 1908, the youngest daughter of William and Mary (Powers) Sheehan. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Julius Leo Ploof, on December 22, 1999. Jule was an artist and had a love for red roses, visiting with friends, had a wonderful laugh, a wonderful heart and everyone whose lives she touched has been blessed. She touched many lives. She is survived by one niece, Robin House and her husband Kevin of Fairfax; and a special friend, Margaret Marshall of Colchester. She was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. , 84, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at the Verdelle Village ECF in St. Albans. He was born April 24, 1916, in Barre, the son of the late Albert O. and Alme Rose (Willette) Venner. He was a resident of Enosburg Falls since 1983 and was a former resident of Brattleboro. He was employed at Agway in Brattleboro for several years retiring in 1979. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He is survived by a brother, Francis W. Venner of Barre; a sister, Jennie Sweet of Albany, NY; three step sons, William Baker of Waterville, Hollis Baker of Plainfield, Conn., and Harland Baker of Cannan, Conn.; one step daughter, Fern Arel of St. Albans; 20 step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; one step great great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. He was predecease by his wife, Dorothy (Longe) Venner. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls. Ruth attended Winooski Schools, and was married in St. Stephen’s Catholic Church on December 1, 1945 to Henry Boisselle. During World War II, Ruth was employed by the American Woolen Mill and the Porter Screen Company, and most recently by the Econo Lodge in South Burlington for several years, until her retirement in 1987. Among her many interests, she enjoyed bingo and playing cards with her friends. She was also a member of R.S.V.P. and C.C.V.A. Programs, and the Williston Senior Center. Ruth is survived by her husband, Henry J. Boisselle of Williston; two sons, Henry E. Boisselle and his wife, Sharon of Essex Junction, Bruce Boisselle and his girlfriend, Susan Knisley of Winooski; five grandchildren, Ailsa Chastenay, Elyssa Boisselle, Benjamin Boisselle, Melissa Boisselle and Angela Boisselle; one great-grandchild, Stephen Chastenay; two brothers, Eugene Mercure and his wife, Clare of Scottsdale, Ariz., Robert Mercure of Burlington; two sisters, Beatrice Gove of Richford, and Thelma Syriac and her husband, Ray of Burlington. She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry, Armand, and Edward Mercure; and one sister, Mildred Aldrich.
